her own studio some three years ago, which is now located at 10 Tremont Street in Claremont.

"I have always been very interested in photography, ever sine I can remember," Nelson said in a recent interview.

"My mother used to say all the time that I was 'wasting her film' so she bought me my first camera when I was a sophomore in high school."

After graduating from Stevens in 2006 and receiving a visual arts scholarship, Nelson then graduated from the Hallmark Institute of Photography the following year before opening her own studio.

Sarah currently concentrates on wedding photos and senior portraits, but also specializes in portraits of families and especially children.

"I feel my work is unique in that I truly try to capture the subject's personality. I look into the subject's interests and style, then try to bring that out in my photographs."

Sarah uses simple backgrounds and traditional techniques in order to keep the focus on the subject.

"For many people, senior portraits or their wedding photos may be the only time they are photographed by a professional," Nelson added.

"So I want to do everything I can to make the experi-

ence a pleasant and memorable one."

Latin Band Workshop At Springfield High School Story by Joe Milliken - Editor The Latin band Black Beans, based in Lebanon NH, recently held a workshop at Springfield High School (SHS).

Comprised of four Cuban musicians and one from Uruguay, Maricel, Liana, Redel and Walter combine a unique blend of

Caribbean, Latin and other tropical vibes with their own original compositions.

During the workshop and under the direction of James Chlebak the SHS band students performed "Espuma de Mar", arranged by Gordan Eglintine and Chlebak in a school-wide assembly.

Also included in the

festivities were a Spanish student dance performance, madrigal singers and of course, a Latin grooved performance from Black Beans.

Also that evening, Black Beans gave dance lessons at the community dance party held in the SHS cafeteria.

Ultimately, new job opportunities will be created and Vermonters will have a variety of renewable energy sources combined with more stable pricing.

The House is expected to pass S. 88 – Vermont’s 2010 Comprehensive Health Care Reform Bill. This bill is the combination of the House and Senate’s work, and articulates the goals of a statewide reform and principles that should underlie a statewide, integrated heath care system.

It is the policy of the state of Vermont to ensure universal access to and coverage for essential health services for all Vermonters. All Vermonters must have access to comprehensive, quality health care. Systemic barriers must not prevent people for accessing necessary health care.

And finally, all Vermonters must receive affordable and appropriate health care at the appropriate time in the appropriate setting and health care costs must be contained over time.

Vermont’s present health care system covers a larger percentage of the population than that of most other states, but still about 7 percent of Vermonters lack health insurance coverage. The bill also aligns us with the new federal reform so the state can apply for grants and waivers and draw down as much federal money as possible in support of keeping Vermonters health.

My next Capitol Letter will provide more details of this bill and how it will benefit you.

Chester, Andover, Baltimore and North Springfield Last week, the House passed H. 781 – the Renewable Energy Bill. The bill makes very clear Vermont state policy of encouraging renewable electric energy.

It’s good for our economy; it’s good for our energy future, and 98% of Vermonters have said they would like to see more of it.

The bill has provisions helping farmers, the Vermont air National Guard, large employers like IBM -- and the long-term interest of all electric ratepayers.

It creates government efficiencies, simplifies renewable generation procedures and tailors some current incentives. Following are some highlights of the bill: Allows for the Vermont Air Guard to build on-site renewable energy generation to produce some of its electric power and qualify for net metering. This will save both state and federal money currently spent on electricity.

Ensures that the early “cow power” farmers will have predictability of a fixed-price, long-term contract, which was only available to newer farm methane projects. The bill sets a costbased power purchase rate at the level recently ordered by the Public Service Board (PSB) for farm methane.

Removes an arbitrary size limit on the definition of “renewable” for hydroelectric generation. By doing this, it solidifies a positive relationship with Hydro Quebec, a major, long-term source of reliable, renewable electric power.

There are many other provisions in this bill, many are technical in nature, but the bottom line is that this new energy bill will increase predictability in generation, reduce costs for new and existing projects, provide tax credits, create broader opportunities for the

On Thursday, May 13 from 7-8 p.m., the public is invited to the Springfield Town Library at 43 Main Street, to learn about spring amphibians from naturalist Jan Lambert.

Jan Lambert will explain the breeding behavior of New England's salamanders, frogs, and toads, and the various Citizen Science programs that are looking for help. She will show her close-up video clips of calling frogs and toads. These clips were gained over many hours of wading and crawling through the mud and water of the areas' wetlands.

The audience may also experience a variety of live amphibians that Jan Lambert will bring.

The program is co-sponsored by the Museum, Springfield Library, Ascutney Mountain Audubon Society, and partially funded by the Wellborn Ecology Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. For information on the amphibian program, call the Springfield Library at 885-3108.

CCV Offers Environmental Science Degree Beginning this fall the Community College of Vermont will offer an associate degree in Environmental Science. This new program is designed to prepare students for employment in areas of the environment or for transfer to a fouryear institution of higher learning.

Students choose a focus area geared toward conservation of natural resources, energy efficiency, or environmental literacy. Students will gain an understanding of environmental problems and obtain the knowledge and skills to begin developing solutions.

New Thought VT Service in Springfield

Garden Club Shares Happy Spring Flowers On April 20, Springfield Garden Club members enjoyed spending time with clients at the Adult Day Care Center on River Street in Springfield. They helped them make "Happy Spring" flower arrangements to take home. Using colored daisies with bright green, pink, yellow, orange and blue hues was a fun way to welcome spring and also celebrate Earth Day. The SGC over the past years has received numerous awards for their work in Garden Therapy throughout the community for these activities at the Adult Day Care, as well as helping them to maintain a garden on-site, and also making flower arrangements that get delivered with Meals on Wheels.

These programs at the Adult Day Care are done in conjunction with the Springfield Hospital.

Soon the Garden Club will be busy doing the community plantings. All of these projects, as well as student scholarships for local young people studying in the fields of horticulture, forestry, or environmental sciences, are funded by the club's big fundraiser in November - the "Festival of Trees."

The Spartans needed two wins over the weekend to earn a home game in the first round of the upcoming Northeast Athletic Conference East Division Baseball playoffs, and got the job done.

The girls were juniors in high school. Phyllis lived for many years in Michigan and Tennessee.

Marjorie Kalanges Cook still lives close to Perkinsville.

Marjorie wrote about her childhood in Weathersfield Tales 3. Here is an excerpt from one: The Scudders in the village had a small lightcolored goat they kept hitched to a post near the church. He was a mild-mannered goat that was anxious to chew on everything.

One time he came over to where we kids were playing outdoors when we were in Bible School.

The teachers must have been inside briefly because the goat chewed the clothing of several children.

He grabbed the hem of my dress and started chewing and chewing and chewing until it was wet all the way around the bottom. I didn’t move an inch. I was only seven, and this was my first meeting with a goat in all my life. …

Our neighbors the Shattucks had a goose that would chase you off their property. He used to come to our place, stand on a snowbank, and knock on the window. He would slobber and drizzle all over the window. My mother was less than five feet tall. She was powerful, but she didn’t want to go out after that goose that was almost as tall as she was. We weren’t too keen on that goose.

Get In The Game A View On Sports By Editor Joe Milliken

High School Action Even during vacation week, there was still plenty of local action on the diamond.

In Windsor, the Yellow Jackets baseball team recently went up against Fair Haven, but could not get enough offense going in a 6-2 loss to the Slaters.

However the bigger issue in this one might have been the Windsor pitching, which gave up seven bases-on-balls and also hit three batters in the loss. That is a lot of extra base runners.

The Jacks have also had problems scoring runs early in the season, which

doesn't bode well when you are allowing a lot of base runners.

--------------------------The Windsor softball team, however, had a little more luck against the Lady Slaters, beating Fair Haven in softball action rather handily, 9-2.

Windsor starter Amber Heath pitched a two-hit gem over five innings, while striking out six and walking only one, before Katelyn Curtis pitched the final two innings.

Curtis also pitching in at the plate with two hits, an RBI and two runs scored.

Mariah Delong also had a big day with the bat, smacking two hits and two RBI's.

--------------------------In Springfield, the Cosmos Derek Osborne got the big hit, a two out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Springfield to a 4-3 win over Windsor at

Riverside Park.

The winning hit came after Windsor had scored on a two out, two-run single in the top of the inning to tie the game.

Jeremy Currie got the start for the Cosmos and went six and 1/3 innings, scattering three runs and seven hits while striking out nine.

Alex Drost started for Windsor and also pitched effectively, going the distance while giving up six hits.

Staying in Springfield, the Lady Cosmos softball team recently traveled to Bennington, dropping a tough, 4-0 decision to Mount Anthony. At press time, the loss put Springfield at 2-3.

Ashly Glanovsky pitched a completegame, two-hit shut out for Mount Anthony, with Ashley Richardson and Jill Rushton providing the only hits for the Cosmos, and both were

bunt singles.

Despite taking the loss, Richardson pitched well for the Lady Cosmos, scattering four runs and nine hits, while striking out three.

--------------------------In Manchester, the Burr & Burton Bulldogs baseball team and Rutland Raiders recently slugged out an extra inning affair, with the Raiders getting three runs in the top of the tenth inning to pull out a 10-7 win.

The Raiders jumped out early in this one with a run in the first, three in the second and two more in the third, before the Bulldogs got rolling, led

by Mike Marino and Alex Richardson home runs.

The Bulldog relief pitching of Ed Lewicki, Richardson and T.J. Oliver - which shut down the Rutland offense for six innings, before the Raiders finally broke out

for three in the tenth.

--------------------------The 75th NFL Draft took place over the weekend, with plenty of surprise picks happening up and down the board and as usual, Patriots head man Bill Belichick was as unpredictable as ever.

Of course, quarterback Sam Bradford to the St. Louis Rams with the first overall pick was no surprise, but some of the other quarterback selections were shocking.

Most draft boards had Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen as the next QB picked in the mid-to-late first round or early second, with Texas signal-caller Colt McCoy also going in the late first or second round.

But low-and-behold the Denver Broncos took what many feel is a big chance by grabbing Florida quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner

But why do that when you already have a young, franchise quarterback (Jay Cutler) and there are big questions about whether Tebow will even be able to play quarterback in the NFL. As for the Patriots, Belichick did his usual, "trading down in order to accumulate more picks, which he did twice in the first round. He eventually took a player with his first pick, Rutgers cornerback Devin McCourty.

Although it is not surprising for Belichick to trade down or to take a defensive player with his first pick, some draft experts really thought they were going to actually use their first pick instead of trading it, to draft arguably the most talented wide receiver in the draft in Dez Bryant.

Lady Terriers Bite Bulldogs In Comeback Win Story and photos by Joe Milliken - Editor After a rough start to their season, the Bellows

Falls Union High School softball team recently bounced back at home, producing their first

victory of the season with a come-from-behind win over Burr & Burton, 10-7, in Westminster.

After falling behind by four runs after two innings, Bellows Falls starting pitcher Emma Shaw settled down quite nicely, throwing a complete-game, five hitter including nine strike outs.

Sophomore pitcher Jenna Hazlett started for the Lady Bulldogs and took the loss.

Senior Tia Billado led

the offense for the Lady Terriers with two hits and five RBI's, including the key hit in the game, a grand slam home run.

The winning pitcher Shaw also helped her own cause with a single and three runs scored, while Ali Danic and Megan LaBow each had a hit and two runs scored.

The win was the first victory of the year for the Lady Terriers, who at press time held a 1-4 record heading into a game against Fair Haven.

McKibben & Koss Speak in Chester Misty Valley Books will host author Bill McKibben at the First Universalist Church in Chester’s Stone Village on Saturday, May 1 at 2 pm.

McKibben, a scholar in residence at Middlebury College, will present his latest book (of eleven): Eaarth, Making a Life on a Tough New Planet. McKibben was among the first to write seriously about the consequences of global warming with The End of Nature in 1989.

A former staff writer for The New Yorker, he writes regularly for Harper’s, The Atlantic Monthly and The New York Review of Books.

Ron Koss, author with his twin brother Arnie of The Earth’s Best Story, will be at Misty Valley Books in Chester on Sunday, May 2, at 4 p.m., to talk about their creation of the first organic baby food to take on the major brands. This event is at the bookstore on the Chester Green.

Public Events at the Gassets Grange The first Saturday of every month members of the Grange prepare a community breakfast served from 8-10 a.m. of eggs, sausage, bacon, home fries, pancakes toast and a beverage. All that for a $5 donation .

The Grange hosts a Saturday night Square Dance the same day. Green Mountain Express and Friends Band strike up the fiddle at 7 p.m. Arnold Stoddard of Chester calls the dances until 11. There is a $5 donation at the door.

On Thursday from 2 - 4 p.m. the ladies of the Grange gather together to socialize and have a craft workshop.

Every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. they host Bingo with doors open at 5:30. Games include a Bonanza, Winner Take All, 5 specials, 10 regular games and of course Cover All for the jackpot.

Smith – Editor For more than a decade, the first weekend in May has played host to one of the more interesting and fun early spring events in the Connecticut River Valley, and this year the Eleventh Annual Herricks Cove Wildlife Festival will be held on Sunday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This year the festival events, exhibits, and activities include some old favorites and some new ones.

Food will be available. Brian Fox Ellis will be back again with his stories. Rockhopper and AMOS will be back with crawly creatures. Southern Vermont Natural History Museum and VINS will be there with hawks and owls. Jerry Sneider will be there with his butterfly program and decorating t-shirts with the kids. Phil Morgan returns with an oriole feeder to make.

Senior Ben Hewitt got the start for Bellows Falls, taking the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits over six innings, Jeremy Kilburn pitched the seventh.

After Mill River got three runs in the top of the first, the Terriers came back in the third inning with two of their own but it should have been more.

After back-to-back

News, Notes & Announcements for the Rockingham Region Nature Museum Hikes & Events On Saturday May 8 from 1-3 p.m., The Nature Museum is sponsoring a tour of Leigh Merinoff’s new “The Meadows” Bee Farm in Windham.

Please call the museum for directions and to register for this program, which is free for museum members; non-members $5.

On Sunday, May 16 from 1-4 p.m., Greg Meulemans, Vice President and Treasurer of the co-sponsoring Friends of the West River Trail, will lead a four-mile hike to Angel Falls. The program is free to Museum and West River Trail members; nonmembers $5.

Hikers should wear sturdy waterproof hiking shoes or boots and park outside the gate to the Ball Mountain Dam off route 30/100 heading north 1.5 miles from the center of Jamaica on the right or heading south 5.1 miles from Rawsonville on the left.

Cowboy Junkies in May 9th Concert at Bellows Falls Opera House The group's fame began with the success of its platinum album, “The Trinity Session” which was recorded in a church in Toronto 1987, in one session and using a single microphone.

After two decades of success, the Cowboy Junkies returned to Toronto’s Church of the Holy Trinity for a day in November 2006, joined by Ryan Adams, Natalie Merchant and Vic Chesnutt, to revisit the repertoire of The Trinity Session in celebration of the original recording’s 20th anniversary.

Submitted by Dorothy Read With a host of platinum and gold recordings to their credit, the Cowboy Junkies will appear at the Bellows Falls Opera House Sunday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. in what promises to be a rare and unforgettable evening.

The concert is presented by a collaboration of Vermont Festivals LLC, Flying Under Radar, and WOOL 100.1, the local community radio station. Popular regional singer/songwriter Chris O’Brien will open the evening’s entertainment.

Whether singing an old Hank Williams or Patsy Cline ballad, or a new original piece, The Cowboy Junkies offer a unique blend of blues, country, folk, rock, and jazz. This Canadian band features lead singer Margo Timmins and her two brothers Michael (guitar and chief songwriter) and Peter (drums). Rounding out the group is bassist Alan Anton, who has been a friend of all three since early childhood, and who began the group with Michael, jamming in the family’s garage.

Flying Under Radar ’s producer Charlie Hunter ran a music train through Canada with the Cowboy Junkies a few years ago, and one of the things he recalls is the effortless way the band meshes as a live ensemble.

“They are a seamless entity, creating music of such haunting beauty and power, and it's hard to tell where one personality starts and another ends,” Hunter said.

The other thing that he remembers from the experience is how lead singer Margo Timmins has a stunning movie-star presence that turns heads.

“Every time she'd enter the dining car, conversation would come to a halt and all eyes would just watch her move down the length of the car,” he said.

Hunter has a number of Cowboy Junkies stories, including their kindness to Fred Eaglesmith and his band when they took him on tour many years ago as their opening act.

Walpole Establishes Farmers Market - Addresses Scheduling Issue In Relation To Bellows Falls Farmers Market It’s about to get easier to buy fresh, local food in Walpole from neighbors who grow it. Walpole farmers are happy to announce the creation of a weekly Walpole Farmers Market (WFM). Beginning Friday, May 21, it will be held every Friday from 3 until 6 p.m. throughout the season. Except for three Fridays later in the season when The Common was already reserved for other uses, it will be held on The Walpole Town Common.

Walpole farmers who sell direct to the public have been working together to draft guidelines for the conduct of the WFM. All Walpole farmers are invited to become members of this cooperative venture, and to have a vending space at the market. Farmers from beyond Walpole will be invited to join the WFM to offer products that are not available from Walpole farmers. Prepared food vendors and crafters will also be invited to join the market, in numbers that will compliment, but not overwhelm, the agricultural emphasis of the WFM. The WFM is a response to demand from both customers and vendors of fresh local food. TriVillage Energy (TVE), Walpole’s energy committee, has sponsored a number of special occasion Farmers Markets that were wildly successful, and met with demands from both sides of the market stand for more markets. At this past Town Meeting, TVE took a survey of voters to assess interest in a regular Farmers Market and to find out when shoppers would like the market to be.

Of 349 people taking the survey, 342 reported they did want to see a Farmers Market in Walpole. Written comments and the survey takers indicated that this response was not a simple yes, but an excited, enthusiast, vibrant YES!!! The majority of respondents requested that the market be held Friday afternoons.

Even those voting for a Friday market expressed concern, however, that the WFM not compete with the Bellows Falls Farmers Market, which is also held on

Friday afternoons, from 4 pm to 7 pm. Organizers of the WFM shared this concern, and on the survey suggested other possible days and times. Another, but less popular choice with voters, was Sunday afternoon. Many Walpole farmers had a conflict with church or family commitments, so Sunday had to be ruled out. Weekdays got a very weak response on the survey and those had to be ruled out as well.

Similarly, Saturdays had conflicts for the farmers and a very weak response on the survey.

We spent a lot time and effort struggling to get Walpole farmers and shoppers to participate in the BF Market. But we just couldn’t get that many people from Walpole to go over there. When the bridge went out last year even fewer people wanted to go.”

November 25, 1952 – April 10, 2010 Priscilla “Penny” Woodell, 57, died unexpectedly at her home in Cavendish on Saturday, April 10, 2010 Penny was born in Springfield November 25, 1952, the daughter of Gordon and Nancy (Cota) Durand.

She was a life long resident of Cavendish, graduating from Black River High School in 1970.

She attended the College of St. Joseph's in Rutland and received her Masters in Special Education.

Penny was currently employed at Opportunities in Learning in Ludlow.

She had been a dedicated teacher for the past 37 years.

She married Curtis Woodell December 9, 1972 at the Holy Name of Mary in Proctorsville.

Penny loved her fast cars, riding on motorcycles with her husband, making her annual trips to the beaches of Aruba and Maine. She was very passionate

about her work, family and friends. She was a loving and generous wife, daughter, mother, s i s t e r , grandmother, and teacher.

She is survived by her husband Curtis of Cavendish; her parents Gordon and Nancy of Lebanon, NH; a son, Jonathan and his wife Lori of Proctorsville; a daughter, Renee Call and her husband Jim of Proctorsville; two brothers; James Durand of Woodstock and Jeffrey Durand of Wilder; two grandchildren; Mikayla and Meghan Call of Proctorsville; several nieces and nephews and the hundreds of students lives that she touched.

News, Notes & Announcements for the Ludlow Region Cavendish Community Fund Grants The Cavendish Community Fund has announced that it is now accepting applications for grants that will be awarded this spring.

The deadline for applying is May 15. Applications are available at Crow’s Bakery on Depot St. in Proctorsville, Cavendish Town Offices on High St. in Cavendish and online at www.Cavendishccca.org.

CCF inaugurated its program of giving cash grants to organizations for educational and cultural projects, programs and events in 2007. Awards have been given to a variety of schools, churches, other non-profit organizations and citizens for Cavendish events.

While individuals are allowed to apply, they are strongly encouraged to partner with a local non-profit organization.

Projects, programs or events must directly benefit the Cavendish community in some way. A panel of local citizens reviews all applications and recommends the ultimate grantees based on the quality and feasibility of each proposal. Grants are not expected to exceed $1,000 each and will depend primarily on the number of applications and the amounts requested.

FOLA Will Host Two political Debates At its recent meeting, the Directors of Friends of Ludlow Auditorium decided to conduct two major political debates in the auditorium at Ludlow's Town

Hall. FOLA has invited all five Democratic candidates for governor to participate in a debate on Thursday, July 29.

Following the recently-rescheduled primary elections in August, FOLA will sponsor a General Election gubernatorial debate of all candidates appearing on the November ballot. This debate will take place on Thursday, October 14.

Ralph Pace, FOLA Chair, indicated that details for both debates would be released within a month.

"Our first priority is to get all the candidates to participate in these important debates," Pace said. He noted that invitations had already been sent to the five Democratic Party candidates: Deb Markowitz, Doug Racine, Susan Bartlett, Peter Shumlin, and Matt Dunne. Additionally, Brian Dubie, the unchallenged Republican candidate for Governor, had been notified of the Oct. 14 debate.

Volunteers Needed for Marker Project During the summer months, many people come to Cavendish to research their ancestors. Seeing the grave of a great grandparent can be a very moving experience. It can also provide new information, such as what a middle initial might have stood for, or the exact date of a birth. Some people, by walking through a plot, have learned of family members they never knew about.

Grave markers also offer important clues to a town’s history. It is easy to track outbreaks of epidemics, the sentiments of a particular area, who served in what war and a lot more.

Cavendish has cemeteries with very old grave markers, including the Revolutionary War and before.

While our Cemetery Commission does an excellent job with marginal funds, a number of stones are in need of care. In order to restore them, the Cavendish Historical Society is launching a community wide Marker Cleaning Day the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend.

We are working with the Vermont Old Cemetery Association and the Cavendish Cemetery Commission to clean and repair the grave markers in the seven Cavendish cemeteries. The students at the Cavendish Town Elementary School are also going to be involved in helping with this project.

CHS is seeking volunteers who would like to assist in the various aspects of restoration. Volunteers will be taught and equipped to clean markers. In return we will ask them to be responsible for cleaning certain areas and to help train others.
