Walpole College Student Is Putting His (Red) Sox On Story by Joe Milliken Sports Editor Photo courtesy of Mike Lawlor If you ask a typical boy from New England what he wants to be when he grows up, chances are one popular answer would be “I want to play for the Red Sox!” Well, for current Suffolk University senior and 2006 Fall Mountain Regional High School graduate, Mike Lawlor, working for the Red Sox organization as an ambassador in the Fan Services and Entertainment Department, might be the next best thing.

“I am currently finishing up my senior year at Suffolk University in Boston, while majoring in business management with a minor in marketing.

“A lot of my classes helped me develop the core skills I will need to succeed and exceed at my job and in my career.

Work ethic, passion, dedication, trust, and balancing timemanagement, along with developing the appropriate people skills is huge in my department because of our interaction with the fans.

“Suffolk is also conveniently located only about 15 minutes from Fenway Park, which saves a lot of commuting time.

So how does a college-going, life-long Sox fan from Walpole end up finding a job with the organization?

“Well, I have always wanted to work in Major League Baseball and specifically for my hometown Red Sox,” Lawlor said in a recent interview.

“It was at the beginning of 2009 when I suddenly realized I need to get started on pursuing my career, so I got in contact with a Red Sox scout named Galen Carr and he forwarded my information to the Sox’ Special Projects Coordinator, who called me in for an interview for a summer internship.”

Lawlor was disappointed when he did not get the internship because the interview process had already been closed before his interview, however, was thrilled when asked if he was interested in a job interview.

“My heart almost leapt from my chest,” Lawlor stated.

“A few days later I drove down to Boston and interviewed

for a job in the Fan Services and Entertainment Department.

“I had a great interview and began training less than a week later. Then by the end of May, the department head pulled me aside and told me that I was the newest employee of the Boston Red Sox. Needless to say, I was ecstatic!”

which includes representing the team as a liaison between the organization and the fans.

Lawlor also coordinates the Sox’ Peanut-Allergy friendly initiative, which helps children and adults with peanut allergies to attend games, as well as the flag-flying program for retiring military veterans.

“I also coordinate a few of our community outreach programs connecting fans from unfortunate families to representatives of the team.”

Game day responsibilities for Lawlor include assisting in the pre-game ceremonies and coordinating with the fans throughout the ballpark to make sure they enjoy their experience at Fenway Park.

“I’ve had some interesting experiences so far, from hanging out with other Red Sox employees and players, but one story during the first two weeks I was on the job stands out.

“I was down on the field for pregame ceremonies in June against the Yankees. I had finished my duties and was waiting for the anthem to begin when Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano began to throw just in front of me.

“Jeter began long tossing to Cano when a throw got away and zoomed just past my face and landed behind home plate. Cano came over to me and said ‘Man, bro, that was a close one.’

“Then when the anthem began, Alex Rodriguez came out and stood right next to me. After the anthem, he looked at me and said, “Jeter’s got a weak arm” referring to the wild toss. It was a very interesting night, as the Sox went on to win that game, 7-0.”

So now with his feet in the door, what might the future hold for this budding Major League baseball employee?

“My plans are to represent the team in this department while continuing to learn the necessary skills to take the next step,” Lawlor concluded.

“My dream job is to work in Baseball Operations and help construct the team we so dearly love. I will be helping Theo (Sox General Manager Epstein) and our Baseball Operations Department this summer, helping prepare for the MLB Draft in early June.”

News, Notes & Announcements for the Rockingham Region BF Rotary Club Spaghetti Dinner The Bellows Falls Rotary Club will be holding its Annual Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 27 at the Bellows Falls Moose Club on Westminster Street.

Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and will include spaghetti and homemade meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and beverage.

Each year the food is prepared by local Rotary Club members. The proceeds of this year ’s event will benefit both local projects and the Haiti relief effort.

Ticket prices are $6 for adults and takeout; $3 for children 8 and under.

They will be available at the door or from local Rotary Club members. This year ’s event is being coordinated by club member Raynie Laware.

SEVCA Announces Two Major Trainings Southeastern Vermont Community Action announces two major training initiatives for eligible individuals looking to either start their own business or gain employment in an office capacity.

Training assistance may be available through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) based on federal eligibility requirement of WIA and the availability of funds at the time of enrollment.

• Bookkeeping QuickBooks for beginner or intermediate users is designed for people interested in pursuing a career in bookkeeping.

This is a 96 hour course running 4-days a week (9 a.m.– noon) from Monday, March 22- Thursday, May 13. Space is limited. All classes will be held in SEVCA’s Computer Lab, 91 Buck Drive, Westminster.

• Micro Business Start-up Training for dislocated workers specifically targets seasoned, skilled, former members of the workforce who have been recently laid off or who may be re-entering the workforce due to the loss of other family income.

Doll Exhibit at Rockingham Library The Rockingham Free Public Library is excited to host a unique exhibit of books and dolls from Feb. 8-26, during library hours., courtesy of the Green Mountain Doll Club of Vermont.

The books on display will be beloved children’s stories, and the dolls will be characters from these books. You’ll find dolls from your favorite classics: Jo, Beth, Meg and Amy from Little Women, Alice and the Mad Hatter, Little Red Riding Hood, Anne of Green Gables, Tom Sawyer -- in addition to more contemporary friends like Marc Brown’s Arthur and Tomie de Paola’s Strega Nona, and Harry Potter.

There will be over 40 dolls in the exhibit including some handmade by club members, stuffed animals and a wide variety of traditional dolls.

African Drum Sale in Saxtons River Main Street Arts in Saxtons River will host an African Drum Sale on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Hand drums will be brought up from New York by an importer of African goods and will be sold at wholesale prices. Included in the inventory will be djembes, dun duns, and some African art samples.

Socially Responsible Investment Talk On Thursday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m., Vermont Academy will present Jay Falk, Founder and President of SRI (Socially Responsible Investment) World Group at Horowitz Performing Arts Hall on the campus in Saxtons River.

Scholarship Funds Seeks Applicants

BF Warming Shelter Hires Coordinator The Greater Falls Warming Shelter has hired Samuel Neill of Saxtons River as coordinator to oversee its operations.

Neill is taking on the responsibility of opening the shelter each evening, coordinating the volunteer and meal schedules, assisting with the guest check in, and enforcing the shelter rules.

The shelter is open every night during the winter months from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., with volunteers on hand in two shifts.

Neill is a 2009 graduate of Tufts University with a degree in sociology. While in college, he worked as program assistant in Americorp’s Jump Start program, where he handled many of the human resources responsibilities, including payroll, member training and recruitment campaigns of the mentoring program.

Neill said he was attracted to the position with the warming shelter not only because it is a logical step from his academic experience, but because is “on the ground.”

“It gives instant feedback,” he said. “You know that what you’re doing is having an impact on people’s lives as soon as you do it.”

In his first week on the job, he was told by a guest of the shelter that it had “saved my life.”

Neill sees getting the word out and reaching people who need the shelter as one of the challenges he and the shelter committee are facing.

Women’s Club Offers Scholarships for Vermont Women in Need of Training The General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Vermont (GFWC-VT) announces the availability of scholarships for Vermont women who have been homemakers and have lost their principal means of support through separation, divorce, or death, long term disability, or unemployment of their spouse.

Eligible women are in need of training or education to enter the work force.

Applicants must submit a specific plan for training or education. Semi-finalists will be interviewed by scholarship committee members.

The scholarships range from $500 to $1500. This is the 16th year of awarding this financial aid, which is

These bylaws and regulations have been chosen by the voters of Weathersfield to protect health, safety,

Imagine being literally thrown away in a snow bank along a recreational trail! That is where Ellis was found by a dog. A woman walking her dog was alerted to something being in the snow bank.

Inspection found a beautiful long haired cat trying to keep warm in the snow.

Flood Brook Creates Art for Africa

Mountain Towns Raise $18K for Haiti On Jan. 23, folks from Weston, Londonderry, Andover, Peru and Landgrove came together to contribute funds to help the people of Haiti. Nearly 200 residents and second homeowners gathered at the Weston Rod and Gun Club, which donated the use of the space, to bid on more than 100 items in a silent auction, plus five other donations that were sold in a live – and lively – auction.

In 90 minutes the event raised more than $18,000, which was contributed to Partners in Health, a Boston-based charity that has been active in Haiti since 1985. Partners in Health maintains a 104-bed hospital and eight clinics in Haiti. Partners is the provider of health care – without regard to ability to pay – to more than a half million people in the highlands of Haiti, and their facilities have been overrun with people fleeing from Port Au Prince since the earthquake.

The event was put together in less than a week by a group led by Julie Hoyt, Marguerite Mason and her sister, Trudy Ernst, Deborah and Wayne Granquist, Jennifer Server, Nancy Donnelly, Mimi Neff and Deborah Peretz. But countless others pitched in to provide the auction items, snacks, and beverages for the event, and to set up, check out the successful bidders and clean up the premises.

Art students at Flood Brook Union School in Londonderry spent several days in January preparing artwork to send to young students in Uganda. Olivia Bailey, daughter of art teacher Casey Junker Bailey and a former student at Flood Brook, is traveling to Uganda to work with children at an orphanage sponsored by the Swiss organization Kids of Africa.

Along with art supplies and books, Olivia is handcarrying portraits, photos, and other artwork created by Flood Brook students especially for Olivia's new students. Excited by the prospect of exchanging artwork with children from Africa, Flood Brook students are learning about Uganda and anxiously waiting to receive artwork and letters in return. News, Notes & Announcements for the Londonderry Region SVAC 2nd Annual Teddy Bear Tea Party The Southern Vermont Arts Center’s second annual Teddy Bear Tea Party takes place at the Arts Center on Saturday, Feb. 13 from 2-4 p.m.

Partygoers are invited to bring a well-loved teddy bear (or doll or other stuffed animal) and both are encouraged to “dress up” for the occasion in their best tea finery.

SVAC Offers School Vacation Art Camp

The Southern Vermont Arts Center and Bogate Designs are joining forces to offer an art camp during the February school break, Monday, Feb. 15 through Friday, Feb. 19.

Quilt Auction to Benefit CHABHA On Sunday, Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, a quilt auction at the First Congregational Church of Manchester, Vermont will benefit CHABHA and provide direct help to children in Africa who have been orphaned by AIDS. At 2:30 p.m. the building will open for viewing, and the auction will begin at 3:30.

CHABHA supports grassroots, community-based projects that are led by young people who understand the children’s needs because they, too, lost their parents at a young age. World-Famed Puppeteers Receive Governor’s Excellence Award Story and Photo by Robert F. Smith – Editor After nearly a quarter century in Vermont, the Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts is being presented to Eric Bass and Ines Zeller Bass and Sandglass Theater, the company Eric and Ines founded in 1982 in Germany, and haved helmed in Putney since 1986. On Feb. 11 they will be honored

by Governor Jim Douglas and the Vermont Arts Council in a ceremony at the Vermont State House.

The Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts is presented to Vermont artists who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of their chosen art form and a personal commitment to the development of cultural life in Vermont.

Sandglass Theater is an internationally known company that specializes in combining puppets with music, actors and visual imagery. Their productions have toured 24 countries, performing in theaters, festivals and cultural institutions and winning numerous international prizes.

Eric and Ines met in Germany in 1980. They were both puppeteers, Ines was German, and Eric was on tour. In 1982 Eric moved to Germany and they started Sandglass Theater. In 1986 they moved to Putney, which serves as homebase to the internationally touring puppet company.

Ten years later they would open their theater in Putney, and change from a “touring company to a more locally based theater,” Eric said in a recent interview, performing at the Putney theater and in many nearby venues.

Eric and Ines speak with pride of how long their company has survived. “That’s really important,” Eric said. “In the arts, success is not measured by the profits you make, but by your survival and longevity.”

“When people think of puppets,” Ines said, “they think of performances for children. But we’re doing puppet theater for adults. We’re really riding on a strong enthusiasm, idealism and a passion for our work. We take this honor gladly,” she said of the Governor ’s award.

“We see it as a recognition of puppeteers,” Eric said, “recognition of the art form, and recognition of the relationship of arts and the community. I think the

They also are connected with the international world of puppetry, hosting a biannual event, Puppets in the Green Mountains – A Festival of Unusual Theater, that brings puppet companies from around the world to the Southern Vermont region for several days of performances. This coming September will be the seventh event, and puppet companies from Hungary, Spain, Germany and France will participate.

Eric explained that puppetry is a different form of theater. Even if the puppets look like the human figure, he said, “they are not human actors. They are a reflection of our lives, not a portrayal of our lives.

Community Conversations Continue After hosting a standing room gathering of 50 people in January, Post Oil Solutions will continue its second Wednesday of the month Community Conversations on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m., at the Elliot Street Cafe, corner of Elm and Elliot Streets, in Brattleboro.

Many interests and concerns were raised at the first meeting around how to advance sustainability and build community, with groups breaking out in food, transporation, energy, education, the local economy, health care, and so forth. News, Notes & Announcements for the Ludlow Region The Independent Foundation, David Greenewalt Charitable Trust, whose purpose is to give to unique organizations where a small grant can make a large impact, has awarded a $2,500 grant to Black River Good Neighbors Services.

David Greenewalt Charitable Trust is located out of Boston MA, and has a geographic focus on Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont especially in the fields of arts, education, environment, natural resources and health organizations.

Jim Fuller, President of the Board of Directors for BRGNS said “This generous donation can go a long way for our operating support, especially at this time of year. It is the because of the kindness of organizations like the David Greenewalt Charitable Trust that we are able to continue to help our neighbors in need. The entire Board of Directors wants to acknowledge them and thank them for their kind support” Black River Good Neighbors serves the towns of Ludlow, Proctorsville, Cavendish, Mount Holly and Plymouth. Grants Fund New Dry Hydrant Installations Thanks to grants from the Northern Vermont & George D. Aiken Resources Conservation & Development Councils the Cavendish Volunteer Fire Department has able to install three dry hydrants in Fire District #2 over the last two years.

This year we installed a dry hydrant on Hoey Road in a pond owned by Clifford Johnson of Clifford Johnson & Son. He donated all of his time, machinery and materials used to excavate backfill and level the installation site.

The members of the Cavendish Volunteer Fire Department want to thank him for the excellent job he did.

The installation of this dry hydrant will provide us with a valuable source of water in an area that in the

past had to depend on tanker shuttles hauling water over long distances.

Last year we were successful in securing two grants from the same group which allowed us to install two dry hydrants. One was installed at Knapp Pond #1 and the second one was installed on Tarbell Hill Road at the Norrie Davies pond.

The installation of these dry hydrants allows us to provide a much improved level of service due to the availability of water supplies.

We are continually looking for additional locations where there is a suitable source of water in which to install dry hydrants.

We want to thank the Northern Vermont & George D. Aiken Resources Conservation & Development Councils for these grants for without their funding the installation of these dry hydrants would not have been possible.

"After five great years in downtown, it was time to make a move to a bigger location," John De Tore said in a recent interview.

"The new store is 25 percent larger, which allowed me to increase product lines and create a better floor plan.

“Now I have the ability to highlight our large train layout, remote control vehicles, Hallbuilt children's furniture and the many new products that arrive weekly."

After a 20-plus year retail career with Radio Shack, it was always a dream of John's to open his own business.

"After researching a couple of business ideas," John added, "My brother-in-law and nephews encouraged me to explore the idea of opening a full-service hobby shop in Claremont."

BoyKid Hobbies is now the largest hobby shop in the area and offers a wide range of toys and hobby items and supplies.

From model train lay outs, diorama supplies and remote control cars and trucks, to puzzles, Zip-Bin toy boxes and Neat-Oh playmats, to science kits, robot kits, doll-making kits, hobby books, DVDs and Maple Landmark products, the quality and quantity of items offered is simply too long to list.

Then, as BoyKid Hobbies grew and became more popular, the need to expand was clear.

“We have a large number of loyal and supportive customers who I’ve also become friends with,” John stated with a smile.

“It amazed me to see the number of customers who willingly gave their time and energy to help us move to the new location. In just two weeks time last

November, the downtown store was emptied and cleaned while at the same time, the new store was prepared and restocked!”

However the key ingredient to the success of this wonderful store is customer service and having fun!

"This is the largest hobby shop in Sullivan County and voted ‘the most fun place to shop in Claremont,’" John said proudly.

"The store is open 65 hours a week and I am happy to do special orders and also work with schools and local clubs such as 4-H and Scouts.”

BoyKid Hobbies also offers their own clubs and activities as well.

"The Boykid Builders Model Club meets here every Tuesday night and the Train Club meets on Sunday afternoon.

The Rogue Robots is another club that often meets at our store."

John also takes the advice of a couple toy experts, his niece and nephew, Kelsey and Joe. "I get lots of hands-on help and advice from them. Kelsey and Joe like to help with product selection and are also the voices on my radio ads."

So, how exactly did the store name of "Boykid" come to be?

"Many people have asked how I chose the name BoyKid," John concluded.

"It is a reference to my Grandmother McGraw, who always called her boy grand kids 'boykids'.

“The original boykid was my uncle Bill, who was a race car driving legend. He is fondly remembered and I have a model of his 1965 Corvette on display in the store.

Super Bowl Sunday Although it seems that most people were rooting for New Orleans to win the Super Bowl, I don’t believe too many football fans actually thought they could pull it off.

However, Drew Brees and the Saints “came marching in” to Miami and (rather handily) knocked off Peyton Manning and the Colts.

This editor picked the right score for the Saints

(24), however the Colts certainly did not meet expectations.

Local Hoops Action The Leland & Gray boys' basketball team recently went into West Rutland and steamrolled the Golden Horde, 72-20. The win (at press time) put the Rebels at 10-6 on the season.

Matt Bizon led the Rebels with a game-high 21 points, while Josh Fontaine and Colin Nystrom pitched in with 18 and 11 points respectively. Adan Garcia led West Rutland with 10 points.

-------------------------In Windsor, Morghan Farnsworth scored 17 points to lead the Lady Yellow Jackets over Woodstock, 77-29. At press time, the Jacks had

won 10 our of their last 11 games.

Windsor had control of this game from the opening jump, racing out to a commanding 29 point lead at halftime.

The win gives the Lady Jacks a 12-6 record (at press time)heading into the final week of the season.

Windsor ’s Amber Heath also added 15 points while Olivia Matos, Kaitlin Callahan and Abby Wright each pitched in with eight points. For Woodstock, Courtney Maxham and Carly Harris scored 10 points each.

-------------------------In Proctor, the home team Lady Phantoms jumped out to an early 10-point lead in the first quarter, in cruising to a

51-36 win over Mount St. Joseph.

Freshman point guard Carissa Elrick is going to be a good one, scoring a game-high 18 points including 10 in the first quarter.

Elrick was everywhere, distributing the ball to teammates, creating steals on defense and cruising the lane for lay ups.

However, a freshman on the other side of the floor was also playing well, as MSJ's Alex Reddy was scoring nearly all her teams' points in the first quarter while also in the paint grabbing several rebounds.

The Mounties would attempt a comeback in the second quarter to get within seven points, but

the second half would be all Proctor as Elrick and company would cruise to the 15-point win.

For Proctor, Mikayla Tanner had 13 points and six rebounds, while Jennifer Connell added seven points.

For MSJ, frosh Reedy led the way with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Megan Blais had a nice game off the bench with eight points and eight rebounds.

---------------------------In Springfield, the Cosmos Boys' hoop team recently had a tough time with Division. I Brattleboro, dropping a 70-40 loss to the Colonels at Dressel Gym. The loss (at press time) put the Division. II Cosmos at 8-9 heading into the final week of the

regular season.

After the Cosmos had actually jumped out to an early 8-1 lead in the first quarter, Brattleboro used a 28-point second quarter to pull away. For Springfield, senior guard Brandon Boyle led the way with 19 points.

---------------------------In Manchester, the Burr & Burton girls' hoop team continues to roll, improving their record to 16-2 with a 44-30 win over Hartford.

Jenna Hoffman led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points while Nina Shehadi pitched in with eight points. Sarah Illingworth led the way for the Lady Hurricanes with 10 points while Stacey Schellong pitched in with eight.

Lady Presidents Working Hard, Fall To West Rutland Story and photo by Joe Milliken - Sports Editor In search of their first win, the Black River High School girls' basketball team recently hosted 144 (at press time) West Rutland, dropping a tough, 55-33 decision to the Lady Golden Horde.

Seemingly facing an up-hill battle from the get-go, especially with senior starter Katie O'Neil out of the line up, the Lady Presidents worked hard despite having only one bench player to rotate into the lineup.

Yet, Black River coach Peter Collins somehow managed to make that one substitute count,

giving each of his players quick rests throughout the contest.

Despite the gallant effort, however, West Rutland got their fast break going early and along with some tough pressure defense, raced out to a 17-6 lead after one quarter.

Senior guard Katie Lincoln led the charge for Westside, hitting two 3pointers, driving for two lay ups and starting two others with steals on the defensive end.

In the second quarter the Golden Horde would continue to expand their lead, using good ball movement on the offensive end in order to

wear down the numbersthin Black River line up.

However, Lady President junior Angie Valente and sophomore Alyssa Collins did some good things on the offensive end as well.

But after closing out the quarter with an eight point run, West River took a 16-point lead into half time.

The third quarter would see much of the same as the Golden Horde continued to run the fast break for easy offense and create a lot of pressure on defense which would not allow the Presidents to get much offense going.

plus point lead, Westside would pull most of their starters in the fourth quarter, which seemed like the right thing to do against a very game, but under-manned Black River roster.

To the Lady Presidents credit, however, they continued to work hard

for the entire game and although they probably don't realize it now, they're determination to play hard to the final whistle every time they step on the floor, is a testament to the players and coaches respect for the game.

High praise indeed.

Lincoln led all scorers with 28 points before sitting out the entire fourth quarter, while senior guard Brooke Griswold pitched in with 13 points.

England and were used mostly by mail stages and post riders.

Following the Post roads, "turnpikes" were established by private individuals and corporations.

The name "turnpike" comes from the gate on a road to obstruct passengers. Today many of our major highways follow the old turnpikes, Route 103 being an excellent example.

The Green Mountain Turnpike was chartered by the Vermont legislature on November 3, 1799 and ran from Clarendon to Bellows Falls.

Among its first owners and incorporators was John Atkinson, the Englishman who also heavily invested in the Bellows Falls Canal and for whom Atkinson Street in Bellows Falls was named.

There were to be four gates on the road, one near its east end in Rockingham, one in Cavendish, one in Ludlow and one in Shrewsbury.

The 1816 "Journals of the General Assembly" in Montpelier shows legislature to establish a gate in Chester, but the act failed to pass. The tolls established by law varied from 30 cents for a single horse carriage or coach, to 56 cents if drawn by two horses.

The rates were collected at each of the four gates.

If any person should turn out for the purpose of going around any gate, he should forfeit triple

toll as a fine and plain signs should be displayed at each gate showing the rates of toll.

“Shunpikes” were roads that skirted around turnpikes, where no tolls had to be paid, thereby shunning the turnpikes.

Today you will still see some roads in Vermont marked as a shunpike.

A charter was granted in 1807 to a company for the building of a turnpike, connecting with the Green Mountain

Turnpike at Chester and continuing over the mountain to Manchester.

This later became a part of the most popular stage route between Boston and Saratoga Springs.

The intersection of these two crossroads in Chester made for a major hub of activity. All commerce and individuals travelling from Montreal to Boston or Albany to to Concord, NH, had to come right

through town.

Numerous inns and taverns were built in Chester to accomodate all of the travellers. Two of these inns remain today, the Henry Farm Inn and Kelly's Tavern.

Chester was a wealthy and prosperous town inhabited by highly educated men and women, and became a highly sophisticated and modern town both in its residents and architecture. It was also said that Chester had some of the best roads in the entire state.

These turnpikes were built and maintained by private capital for about 40 years, after which the different towns through which they were laid, purchased them to become important parts of the present highway system of the state.

I was guided to view a Reiki DVD at a house I was care-taking (as I didn't own a DVD player.) With three remotes and not much experience with them I finally managed to turn the television on, insert the DVD but couldn't get it to play – all I got was static.

After fiddling around with all the buttons on everything, I gave up and turned everything off. I then sat there scratching my head, wondering what to do. As I often do when I address my angel guides, I looked up at the ceiling and said, “OK, you guys, you wanted me to watch this DVD today so I can be of greater service. How can I get the DVD player to work?”

At which point the DVD player and television set popped on (without my

touching it!) and it had evidently changed to the right channel, playing the Reiki DVD before my eyes. After I finished laughing and thanking my guides, I watched the entire DVD, navigating with no problem. I think when I scratched my head, my vibration went up which is always good when you're dealing with problems, and with angels.

Mud Time Theater in Bellows Falls Story and Photo by Robert F. Smith – Editor In a small room in the Exner Block in Bellows Falls, Mud Time Theater is offering Free Friday Theater – live performances of original works by actors Steve Friedman and Denny Partridge, the co-founders of Mud Time Theater, who have worked together since 1970 on some 60 different productions.

Last Friday the theater featured a production of The Nine Questions, a play based on a newspaper article from the mid-1800s about the legend of how a Rockingham woman, before the Revolution, disappears in the primeval wilderness turning up six months later, naked and bewildered, without her baby. The play is about what happens between the lost wife and her farmer husband after she comes home.

Performed in the round, with minimal props, the play brought in a full house last week, and will be performed again in three weeks. Pass-the-hat donations after the show help offset expenses, and anyone interested in upcoming shows and schedule updates can visit www.mudtimetheater.blogspot.com.

The theater continues its winter season with a special guest performance by Modern Times Theater of East Hardwick, at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 12, at 17 Canal Street in Bellows Falls.

Modern Times Theater makes puppet shows for the street, the school, the barn, the pasture and the subway. The shows convey a general dissatisfaction with post-modern convenience and promote a return to old-fashioned difficulty. Modern Times Theater is Rose Friedman and Justin Lander, a wife and husband duo who trained together for five years in Vermont’s Bread and Puppet Theater.

This puppet show is performed in an elaborate stage, complete with enough bells and whistles to keep the thin plot moving along. And, if the show leaves a bitter aftertaste, the sweet sounds of the ukulele and cornet duo will wash it away.

Audience capacity is limited and there are no advance reservations.

Early birds can wait in the adjacent Exner Block lobby. The theater will open for seating at 7:45.

An Evening of New England Fiddle Tunes

Fiddle tunes New England style is the subject of fiddlers Jill Newton and Laurie Indenbaum’s presentation at Main Street Arts Thursday, Feb. 11 as part of the Saxtons River community arts center ’s Taste of the Arts, Tales from a Community series.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a light supper provided by Harvest Moon caterers.

Newton and Indenbaum will share the tunes they have learned and played over 33 years of fiddling together for square and contra dances, parties and other festive occasions, and will add notes about the music’s origins and styles.
