Historic Concert

VSO & André Watts Fill Bellows Falls Opera House

Text and Photo by Robert F. Smith _ Editor The Opera House in the Town Hall in Bellows Falls has seen some historic peformers in its day, including such icons as Mae West and WC Fields. This past Friday it added another stellar name to its history when André Watts, one of the world’s most celebrated and beloved classical pianists, performed there as part of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s 75th Anniversary presentations.

In 1963, at the age of 16, Watts made his debut with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in a nationally televised concert. Two weeks later he would fill in for the great Glenn Gould in Liszt’s E-flat concerto, and receive a standing ovation from the orchestra as well as the audience. His career has soared ever since.

News from the Springfield Family Center During winter months on days when the weather is poor, the Springfield Family Center is closed. Notices will be posted on SAPA-TV and WCFR. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

The United Methodist Church hosted the Winter Community Dinner, sponsored by the Association of Springfield Area Churches and the Springfield Family Center, on Jan. 23. Some 370 meals were served. This is the highest number of meals ever served at a Community Dinner. Thank you to the Methodist Church for hosting and to all the volunteers that made the event such a success.

The Food Shelf is open on Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m.-4:15 p.m., on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9-2:15 and from 10-noon on Saturday. The Food Shelf is closed during our daily meal from 11:30-12:30.

The Center is open to the public on this same schedule.

A nutritious meal is available weekdays and Saturdays from 11:30–1. Congregations from the Springfield Area Churches provide the Saturday lunch.

The Center is a day shelter for the homeless. Laundry service, a shower and access to a telephone are also available.

A brochure is available containing all of the above information and more, printed at low cost by the Graphics Arts Program at the Tech Center.

Our website, www.springfieldfamilycenter.org, was built by Jacob Rouillard, a student in the Graphic Arts Program at the Tech Center. His teacher Betty Barrett was invaluable as an advisor and it was great to have access to this opportunity for the Family Center. It was a great experience for both parties and resulted in a good end product. Thank you.

We are fortunate to have many financial and in-kind supporters. Thank you to Doris Higgins for her donation this week of a set of drinking glasses.

VFW Honors Outstanding Firefighter

On Jan. 25 the Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 771 of Springfield, Cindy Osuna along with Past Post Commander Gerald Patch presented Aaron Sylvester with a plaque designating him as an outstanding firefighter.

Commander Osuna also announced to Sylvester as well as Fire Chief Russ Thompson that Sylvester will be receiving a citation from National VFW in June as being for the State of Vermont to receive the National Award for Public Servants.

throughout each year so that scholarships can be awarded to deserving graduates. Our main fundraisers are The Unicorn Craft Fair, the Variety Show, and the festivities of Alumni Weekend, those being the golf tournament, the banquet and the parade. These all cost money to produce so any related bills must be paid before we can add to our scholarship funds.

Another avenue of income for the association is through annual dues. We make a plea in our annual newsletter for alumni to please pay their dues. What other association can you belong to for only five dollars a year? If you don’t want to try to remember to pay those dues every year, then you can become a Lifetime Member for only $40.

The Association sent out over 7,400 of those newsletters to addresses that we thought were current. In the first two weeks after their posting, we had 746 of them come back to us due to incorrect addresses.

That is a full 10 percent returned and there will be more. The cost of this endeavor is substantial enough to have the Association deliberating the value of that newsletter. Cost has forced us to simplify its format to almost a “save the date” status, and now even that is questionable.

The groups provide an opportunity for kids to learn to play together, while parents relax and talk with other adults sharing similar experiences.

Springfield Library Receives Grant State Librarian, Martha Reid, on behalf of the Winnie Belle Learned Fund of the Vermont Public Library Foundation, has announced a grant of $1,000 to the Springfield Town Library in Springfield The library will use the funding to put together nature themed backpacks for children to borrow (like a book). Each “Explorer Backpack” will consist of books on a specific topic, a scientific tool, an activity sheet for children and parents, and a blank journal for recording observations.

Osher Program on Death of a Salesman On Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Nolin Murray Center next to St. Mary's Catholic Church on Pleasant Street in Springfield, the Weston Playhouse Theatre Co. staff will present the Osher Lifelong Learning program titled, "An American Classic: Death of a Salesman."

Through readings, discussion and viewing a video section of a performance of the play, the group will explore Arthur Miller's classic tale of the American Dream. A haunting and powerful drama, "Death of a Salesman" is one man's reflections on his empty life and imperfect family.

This preview will highlight the Playhouse's next summer's production starring Christopher Lloyd.

Acworth Winter Carnival Feb. 13 The South Acworth, NH Village Store is sponsoring a Winter Carnival on Saturday, Feb. 13, beginning at 10 a.m.

Events include broom hockey on the ice rink adjacent to the South Acworth Village Store, as well as snowshoe and cross country ski races in the field behind the store. All events will have both adult and child categories.

The cross country ski race begins at 10 and the snowshoe race will take place at 11.

Teams interested in competing in the broom hockey tournament should register in advance.

There is a $25 registration fee for each team.

There will be snowman and snow sculpture contests for children and other kid-friendly activities.

Bob Stocker and Joe Ouellette will have food for sale at their outdoor concession. Hot and cold drinks, snacks and other homemade treats will be available in the store.

Springfield Osher Lifelong Learning Announces Its Spring Semester Programs The Springfield Osher Lifelong Learning Spring Semester Programs have been announced.

Memberships are $40, which includes admittance to all 9 programs in the semester as well as to the other 7 Osher Institute semester programs throughout Vermont. The nearest other Osher groups are in Rutland and in Brattleboro. Non-members are welcome and encouraged to attend individual programs for an $8 program fee.

Tanner Dana led a balanced Windsor attack with 15 points, while Kyle Cushing added 14 points. For Bellows Falls, junior Brendan Hackett led the Terriers with 10 points.

She was picked up off the streets of Claremont.

Who knows how long she had been fending for herself? Despite being on the street and then in a cage in a room with scores of other cats from similar situations Coraline maintained her sweet demeanor. Her markings are very distinct and beautiful to match her purrrr-sonality.

She is one of the cats from the Claremont pound that needs a new home. They did not ask to be on the streets and then kicked out of the pound too.

Feb. 5 is Mom’s Day Off at Bromley

A bus full of “Chicks on Sticks” came to Bromley Resort from Saratoga Springs for last year’s Mom’s Day Off event.

Sherburne H. Hall – 62 May 1, 1947 – January 6, 2010 Sherburne H. Hall, 62 of Windham, passed away on Jan 6, 2010 peacefully at home.

He was born on May 1, 1947 in Springfield, VT, the son of Sherburne G. Hall and Ella (Knight) Hall.

He served in the Air Force from 1966-1970.

He was formerly married to Darlene Coburn.

He was a life long resident of Windham, and worked at Vermont talc, Cyprus Minerals and Luzinac America. Her retired in 2002.

Sherburne loved fishing, hunting and traveling to Moosehead Lake, and enjoyed gardening with his friend Andy.

He is survived by his children Alicia Merrill (Jay Merrill) of Londonderry, Amy Graves of Chesterfield, NH and Dan Hall of Windham; his grandchildren, Samantha Merrill of Manchester, Libby Merrill and CJ Merrill of Londonderry and Alexandra McCue of Florida and a great grandchild, Emmanual Merrill of Manchester.

Also his sisters Patsy Holton (JR Holton) of Chester, Donna Collingsworth (Robert Collingsworth) of Harrisville, NH and Pam Holton (Earl Holton) of Hinsdale, NH, along with several nieces and nephews and cousins.

Preceded him in death: were his parents Sherburne and Ella Hall and Jason Graves a son-in law.

The family would like to thank Hospice and Dr. Backus for all their support, and friend Don Antaya.

News & Notes for the Londonderry Region SVAC 2nd Annual Teddy Bear Tea Party The Southern Vermont Arts Center ’s second annual Teddy Bear Tea Party takes place at the Arts Center on Saturday, Feb. 13 from 2-4 p.m.

Partygoers are invited to bring a well-loved teddy bear (or doll or other stuffed animal) and both are encouraged to “dress up” for the occasion in their best tea finery.

SVAC Offers School Vacation Art Camp The Southern Vermont Arts Center and Bogate Designs are joining forces to offer an art camp during the February school break, Monday, Feb. 15 through Friday, Feb. 19.

There will be 10 separate half-day sessions and participants may register for one session, multiple sessions or for the full week. The full day will be from 9:30-3:30 consisting of a 2 1/2 hour morning session, lunch and a 2 1/2 hour afternoon session.

The classes, which will be taught by four visiting artists, are structured for children ages 6-10.

The price of the camp will vary based on the number of sessions attended. The cost is $25/member or $28/non-member for one half-day session, $20 or $22 for five or more sessions, $18 or $20 per session for all 10 sessions. Limited partial scholarships are available.

Advance registration is required as space is limited to 10 children per session. Registration forms and instructions are online at www.svac.org.

Chester Skatepark Receives Additional Donation From Jinxrel Foundation Story by Joe Milliken - Editor Photo by Pam Nelligan Last September The Outlook published a cover story celebrating the opening and dedication of a very special skatepark located at the Pinnacle Recreation Area on Lover's Lane in Chester called Jinxrel Memorial Skatepark.

The park was built to honor the memories of Max Cancellieri and Shawn Forbes, two young men who had spent many hours riding the old Chester ramps.

Chester Recreation Director Steve Nelligan helped launch the new skatepark idea two years ago and with the help of many others, including artist Nancy Ball, designers Jay Spahr, Ben Cyr and Nick Woytuk, builder Dan Zimmer, Jack Dowd and Anna Jonyas

and of course, Max's mother Laurie Cancellierri.

It was Laurie's Jinxrel Foundation, along with the Tony Hawk Foundation, had originally given the cornerstone donations to complete the building of the new skatepark.

Now more recently, Nelligan and the Recreation Department received an additional $2,500 from Laurie and the Jinxrel Foundation.

"Laurie has said that she and her family have been so taken aback by the community support for this project and the amount of kids who attended the dedication back in September, that she felt the remaining funds should also be donated to the Chester skatepark," Nelligan said in a recent interview.

"The funds will be used to install lights for the upcoming season, as well as helping to maintain the park."

The following services have been scheduled at the First Universalist Parish, the Old Stone Church”on Route 103/North Street in Chester ’s historic Stone Village: Feb. 7 – The Poetry of Life, led by Lay Speaker, Lynn Way, who will explore the ways our lives are influenced by poetry in its many forms.

Sunday services begin at 9:30 a.m.

The Southern Vermont Astronomy Group will hold its monthly meeting at the Whiting Library in Chester on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.

Astrophotographer Al Takeda will show some of his most recent high resolution astrophotos of deep space objects taken using his 7-inch, Hyperbolic Astrograph which produces wide field (3 degree) images of the night sky. He will discuss recent advances in his astrophotography techniques and methods and talk about new developments since his last visit to SoVerA. Most of Al Takeda's imaging is done on the grounds of the MIT Haystack Observatory in Westford, MA. He also travels to Vermont on clear new moon weekends to avail himself of our beautiful skies. He has chased total solar eclipses as far as Hawaii, Egypt and China.

Local Hoopster Kathan Goes Pro In England Basketball League Story byJoe Milliken - Sports Editor Photos courtesy of Emily Clark, Leicester Warriors Former Black River and Springfield High School basketball stand out Tyler Kathan, who also starred at Keene State College, recently signed a contract and is playing professional hoop in the England Basketball League (EBL).

Established in 2003, the EBL is a semi-pro basketball league in England, which forms the second tier of competition below the professional British Basketball League.

In high school and after playing two years for Black River under Coach Martin, Kathan played his junior and senior years for Springfield High School under coach Hatl before moving on to play Division III college hoops at Keene State College in Keene, NH. Tyler graduated in 2009 after a stellar career for the Owls, finishing third on the schools’ all-time scoring

list with 1,805 points and third in rebounds with 939.

In his senior season, Kathan averaged 18.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, while being named Co-Little East Conference Player of the Year.

Tyler was also named the NH Division III Coaches Association Player of the Year, and was also chosen a D3Hoops.com third team All-American.

Five months ago Kathan signed a contract to play for two EBL teams, the Division II Northampton Neptunes and the Leicester Warriors, a team transitioning this season from Division II to Division I. So how exactly does one find his way from Keene State College to the England pro league? "It was the Neptunes who found me," Kathan said in a recent interview.

"They had just recently had a couple players from the New England area and they thought I would be a good fit, but they are not a part of the EBL this season.

The Little School Receives Grant The Thrifty Attic, a Londonderry organization that provides services and supports to area non-profit organizations and families, has given a grant to The Little School to support their financial aid program.

It is important to The Little School that all children whose families would like them to attend are able to enroll in their school for young children. Therefore, The Little School includes many students who receive financial aid. By providing scholarships to The Little School families, the Thrifty Attic’s grant is contributes to The Little School’s ability to serve a diverse group of students and families.

Also featured on the show will be the Spiders, another popular Vermont band.

Co-ordinated by residents Mark and Betsy Andrade, all proceeds of this Valentine's Weekend event will be evenly donated between The National Breast Cancer Foundation and The Friends of Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock.

There will be four main events taking place all weekend long with each night playing host to one "special event". Donations will be accepted and raffle tickets will be sold for prizes provided by area businesses at all events.

Snow Fleas February Rides Future group rides are planned for the Cavendish Green Mountain Snow Fleas Snowmobile Club members. Save the dates of Saturday, February 6; Saturday, Feb. 27 and Sunday, Feb. 14. Weather and snow conditions permitting; the club is planning two group rides and participation in a Tri-Club Poker Run during the month of February. Specifics about each of the rides are explained below: The first ride is to the camp of Jon Springer in Barnard. The group members will meet at 9 a.m. at the club’s Food Shack for the ride. Members are to bring their own food and beverages to drink. There will be a grill available at the camp if anyone wants to grill their food. The club will hold its February meeting at the camp.

The second ride is the Tri-Club Poker Run on Sunday, Feb. 14 for a sixty-five mile ride. The snowmobile clubs of Shrewsbury, Mount Holly, Cavendish and Ludlow will participate. The Snow Fleas will meet at 8 a.m. at the club’s Food Shack for the Poker Run and leave by 8:30 a.m. The cost is $10 per hand and each participant can have a maximum of four hands. There will be five punches on each hand during the ride. There are also prizes awarded for the best poker hand: First prize is $350.00, Second prize is $250.00 and Third prize is $150.00.

Ludlow Winter Carnival Seeks Paraders The Ludlow Winter Carnival is looking for men, women and even children, teens, too (you can even bring your pets) to march in the Winter Carnival Parade on Feb. 6 at 6.30 p.m. and make some noise.

Line up starts at 6 at the high school.

Bring your instrument, kazoo, pan and spoon, cow bell, jingle bells or screaming child--anything-- just as long as it makes noise. We want a whole contingent of noisemakers to march right down the center of Main St to celebrate winter.

You can walk on stilts and sing, ride a bike with a card clipped to the spokes-just as long as it makes noise.

Band members from the local schools, please come and help us out. Hot chocolate and marshmallow to follow the parade at Dorsey Park along with fireworks.

Does The Island Hold Key to Rockingham’s Future?

Story and Photo by Robert F. Smith – Editor Even though many local people may not even know it exists, some folks in Rockingham are looking at The Island in Bellows Falls as the center for a bright future for the community.

The Island? In Bellows Falls? Yes. With the Connecticut River on one side and the historic Bellows Falls Canal on the other, The Island is a several-acre chunk of real estate that contains the railroad station, pre-Columbus Native American petroglyphs, the Waypoint Visitors Center, several huge mill buildings left over from the town’s industrial heyday, the hydro-electric dam, amazing views of the Connecticut River ’s Great Falls and a handful of other businesses like Cota and Cota, The Oh Zone, the NAPA auto parts store and others.

The Island has tremendous potential for future development, according to several local officials and private citizens who have been interested in finding ways to develop the property’s potential.

A feasibility study is underway to get an overview of what buildings are available on The Island and their condition.

One thing is certain, the area is underutilized.

At one time, Bellows Falls was the hub of very active paper making, dairy and cheesemaking industries. Many of those buildings remain in fairly good condition today, and two of the ideas being considered are making The Island an educational center for either the alternative and green energy fields, or a culinary arts school – or perhaps some combination of both.

Energy seems a natural fit for Bellows Falls according to discussions this writer had with Rockingham resident Michael Spaulding and Interim Municipal Manager Francis Walsh.

The Robertson Paper Company building on The Island in Bellows Falls is one of many vacant former industrial buildings in the village.

Hydroelectric Dam, one of a series of several hydropower dams in the upper Connecticut River watershed. The village also sits on a favorable geothermal site, and there has been some study done about tapping into this geothermal source for downtown energy needs.

With future energy needs one of the most pressing issues of this century, both Spaulding and Walsh spoke of what an advantage it would be for the town to become a center for engineering

Gallery North Star Features Julie Albright Gallery North Star, 151 Townshend Road, presents a solo exhibition of new work by nationally recognized still life oil painter Julie Y Baker Albright.

Therapeutic Riding Stables Open In Newfane The northeast’s newest therapeutic riding center, the Southern Vermont Therapeutic Riding Center, opens with a slate of equine-based therapeutic programs for children and adults on Feb. 8 at Winchester Stables in Newfane.

The Center, is looking for energetic people 14 years of age and older to volunteer their time at the center.

Volunteers need not have horse experience, only horse sense and a strong desire to work with and around horses and people with physical, cognitive and emotional needs.

The first Volunteer Training session will be on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon with a question and answer session following.

Post Oil’s 9x12 Garden Workshop Post Oil Solutions is offering a second 9x12 Garden Workshop. Developed by local gardening author and columnist, Henry Homeyer, this workshop is aimed to encourage folks new to gardening, but is also valuable for those who have gardened before.

The 9x12 garden can be prepared on a front lawn and is ideal for the urban gardener. Prepared with hand tools and fertilized with compost this garden is ready to go for the 2010 season. Basically, a 3-foot walkway separates two 3x12 beds planted for maximum production.

Specific planting diagrams will be shown for a salsa garden, Italian garden, salad garden, "roots" garden, pickle garden, potato garden, pole bean garden and winter squash garden. Planting schedules, spacing, watering, weeding, mulch, insect and pest control and appropriate hand tools will be discussed and demonstrated.

Free Course for Families Dealing with Serious Mental Illness NAMI-Vermont announces the free Family-toFamily Education course for families of persons diagnosed with serious mental illness. This 12-week class will start in Brattleboro on March 11 from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

The course will cover information about the major mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression, coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse, basic information about medications, listening and communication techniques, problem-solving skills, recovery and rehabilitation, and self-care The course will be taught

by NAMI-Vermont volunteers who have taken intensive training as course instructors.

This is a unique opportunity to learn more about the challenges of living with someone with mental illness while finding emotional support, self-care and empowerment. The course is designed specifically for parents, siblings, spouses, teen-age and adult children and significant others of persons with severe mental illness.

Catching Up With Element Of The Machine Story by Joe Milliken - Editor Photo courtesy of Element Of The Machine Forming in the fall of 2008 out of two previous local metal bands, Mercy Machine and Broken Mindz, Element Of The Machine featuring Chris Mack on lead guitar and vocals, Scott Erskine on guitar, Mike Descoteaux on bass and Jeff Bixby on drums.

This progressive metal band cooks up a unique, heavy sound reminiscent of old school metal, combining a dark, powerful blend of blistering guitars and a brutal bottom end.

When this editor last caught up to Element, they had just signed a recording contract with Deka Records and were in Mack's own Mackay Productions studio recording their debut CD for the independent label.

The disc was also produced, mixed and mastered

by Mack, with his band mates as co-producers.

The band had signed when a Deka A & R representative found Element Of The Machine online and loved their sound.

Titled Our Last Hope the disc was subsequently released last October.

“The new CD is now available for download at amazon.com and iTune," Mack said in a recent interview.

"Right now, we're on the metal airwaves in seven states including New York, as well as in the United Kingdom at Ragnerok Radio and also a Scottish medal podcast based in Dubdee, Scotland, which is a live web stream.

“Locally we are on the radio at 99 Rock and on WOOL.FM in Bellows Falls, Friday nights during the Spanky Payne radio show from 7 to 9 p.m. It is a very cool radio show that features many local bands and recording artists.”

Element is currently working on the follow up to their debut recording and also have upcoming gigs in White River Junction, Manchester, NH and Worchester, MA, so be on the lookout and go see this band because it will be well worth your while.

Green Mountain Festival Series Feb. 6 Performances Feature Sam & Barbara Lloyd in Love Letters & Dancer Ashley Hensel-Browning The Green Mountain Festival Series offers up the perfect Valentine’s Day gift as we continue our 25th season with a Feb. 6 performance at 7:30 p.m. by three local artists at Green Mountain Union High School in Chester.

Married actors and community favorites, Sam and Barbara Lloyd, will perform in A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters“ a beautifully written play which follows the lives of a man and a woman solely through their correspondence.

Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the play features just two characters and chronicles their relationship through 50 years of hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, love lost and love found, all through their letters to each other.

On stage will be two Vermont treasures Sam and Barbara Lloyd, members of the Weston Playhouse Theater Company. Having acted on Broadway as well as with many New England Regional theaters, the Lloyds say they are “delighted to be a part of this celebration of 25 years for the Green Mountain Festival Series.

We feel that the health of a community is measured in a large part by the degree to which its members support its artistic endeavors” and they are looking forward to being on stage together again.

Also performing will be dancer Ashley HenselBrowning who attended Green Mountain Union High School.

After receiving her bachelor ’s degree from Hampshire

College and a Master ’s degree from Harvard University, Hensel-Browning worked as a teaching assistant at the Boston Ballet’s CityDance program and was chosen to be one of two Vermont Fellows for the “Extending the Dance Map” project.

Already active in area schools as a visiting artist, Hensel-Browning has taught movement, choreography and works with students to develop independent studies of dance history and culture.

Joined for this event by artistic partner Zoe McDonnell, the two will perform a piece which they choreographed and will include several student dancers.

Weston Playhouse Announces 2010 Season – Features Christopher Lloyd The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company, Vermont’s award-winning summer theatre, has announced a 7-show season that includes Obie and Emmy Award-winning actor Christopher Lloyd in the American classic Death of A Salesman, the Vermont premieres of recent hits from Broadway and OffBroadway, and the company’s first world premiere.

“A groundswell of local support and national attention is allowing us to put together our most exciting season ever,” noted WPTC Producing Director Steve Stettler. “There is something for everyone in this year ’s line-up, and we can't wait to share it with our audience.”

The 2010 season kicks off on June 29 with Broadway’s longest running comedy thriller, The 39 Steps. Based on the classic Hitchcock film, this runaway smash won London’s Olivier Award for Best Comedy and earned a Tony nomination for Best Play.

It’s a murder mystery, manhunt and hilarious romp all rolled into one inspired night of theater. Four actors play hundreds of roles in a tour de force that includes a train chase, a plane crash and an ill-fated romance. It’s the kind of theatrical experience that must be seen to be believed. The 39 Steps runs for two weeks only, through July 10.

Next up is the musical that changed Broadway: Avenue Q. The little comedy that could, this hilarious show managed to pull off the biggest coup in Broadway history – besting Wicked for the Tony for Best Musical. Avenue Q is the story of a bright-eyed college grad named Princeton and his new neighborhood friends as they all strive to make their place in the world. A modern-day, R-rated Sesame Street, Avenue Q has become a cult classic with its lifesize puppets and catchy and irreverent songs. It plays from July 15 to 31.

Are you ready for some baseball? Because Damn Yankees is up next to bat, Aug. 5 through 21. Middleaged fan Joe Boyd sells himself to the Devil – and to the machinations of a temptress named Lola – in order to see his favorite team win the pennant. A home run as far as shows go, this perennial fave includes stellar songs that helped define Broadway’s Golden Age like “Heart,” “Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, Mo” and “Whatever Lola Wants.” Baseball fans and theater fans alike will rejoice.

Actor Christopher Lloyd, of Taxi and Back to the Future fame, will play Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman this season at the Weston Playhouse.

Then, in a major late-summer coup, Hollywood star Christopher Lloyd (Taxi, Back to the Future) heads back to the Playhouse stage in the leading role of Arthur Miller ’s timeless classic, Death of a Salesman, beginning Aug. 26. This Tony and Pulitzer winner is the story of Willy Loman, a travelling salesman who fights changing times and the acceptance of his own failings in order to claim his family’s right to the American Dream. Weston’s production will play to both general and school audiences through Sept. 10.

Weston is proud to present its first World Premiere, The Oath, from July 8 to 25 on its 90-seat second stage.

From Aug. 12 to 29, it’s time to snap your fingers to the beat. The Off-Broadway smash The Marvelous Wonderettes will grace the WPTC OtherStage. This delightful, cotton-candy-colored musical takes a trip down Memory Lane with hits from the 50s and 60s like “Lollipop,” “Lipstick on Your Collar” and “It’s My Party.” Enjoy the comic hijinks and 4-part harmonies of a group of girlfriends who decide to entertain on the eve of their senior prom and again at their 10th high school reunion. The Marvelous Wonderettes is a "feel good" show not to be missed.

The Weston Playhouse Young Company will perform another classic show for young audiences in Weston and on tour through local communities from June 24 to July 11. Theatre goers of all ages can enjoy Seussical TYA, a one-hour version of the Broadway musical based on the books of Dr. Seuss and performed by Weston’s talented Young Company of undergraduate musical theatre majors. Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty’s enchanting musical brings beloved characters like the Cat in the Hat, Horton and Yertle the Turtle to life in a heart-warming story with memorable songs. Weston’s legendary Act IV Cabaret caps off the evening for the first three MainStage productions with an ever-changing music and comedy revue. Pretheatre dinner will be served in the Cafe at the Falls restaurant, under the continued management of the Inn at Weston.

Mud Time Theater Offers Free Performance of The Nine Questions

What happens when an irascible Scotsman and an uptight English woman, both in their fifties, take on the journey of a lifetime? This intriguing question will be answered in a midwinter production by the Springfield Community Players.

On Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 7 at 2 p.m., the Players will present a staged reading of Ken Ludwig’s Be My Baby at the Old Stone Church in Chester. The play features veteran actors from the group who will be reading and acting out the comedy by the well known author of such farces as “Lend Me A Tenor” and “Moon Over Buffalo.”

The play tells the story of John, the Scotsman, and Maud, the English woman, who are brought together when his ward marries her niece. Then, when the young couple decides to adopt a new born baby, the older couple has to travel 6,000 miles to California to pick up the child. The problem is, John and Maud despise each other.

Tickets for the event at the Old Stone Church are $12 for general admission and $10 for seniors and students and will be sold at the door.

Mud Time Theater continues its Friday Night Free Theater winter season with The Nine Questions, a new play by Steve Friedman and Denny Partridge, at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5 at Mud Time's storefront theater in the Exner Block on Canal Street in Bellows Falls. Admission is free.

The Nine Questions is a legend of Rockingham in a modern telling. Before the Revolution, the wife of a settler disappears in the primeval wilderness;

she turns up six months later, naked and bewildered, without her baby. The play is about what happens between the lost wife and her farmer husband after she comes home.

Local Hoops Action In Brattleboro boys’ basketball action, the Colonels recently travelled to Hartford, easily knocking off the Hurricanes 51-35.

After a slow first half in which Brattleboro held just a 29-16 lead, the coach Joe Rivers squad kicked it into high gear in the second half and running away to the 16point win.

Senior Dave Freeman led all scorers with 15

points, while Adam Boyle pitched in with 12 points and eight rebounds.

The victory put Brattleboro (at press time) at an impressive 114 on the season.

--------------------------In Rutland, the Lady Raiders hoop squad has been getting rave reviews all season for their jail house defense, and this past weekend was no different as the Raiders crushed St. Johnsbury, 41-26.

How good was the defense?

After not allowing St. Johnsbury a single point in the first quarter, they took a 24-2 lead into halftime. That’s right, they gave up two points in the half!

Although St. Johnsbury is just 6-9 on the season, they have beaten a couple of Division I teams, so

this was no slouch-team going up against the Raiders.

Sophomore Meghan Ballard led the Raiders with 17 points, including a couple 3-pointers, while Kelsey Forte pitched in with 11 points and Alyssa Moore added eight.

Moran and Britney Lane led St. Johnsbury with eight points apiece while Amanda Kay pitched in with five.

-------------------------In Proctor, the Lady phantoms recently cruised to an easy, 55-19 win over the Black River Lady Presidents.

Led by Mikayla Tanner ’s 15 points and nine rebounds, the Phantoms all-around game proved too much for the Black River.

Mikayla McCormack also added 10 points for

Proctor, who improved to 6-10 on the season.

Angie Valente led the way for the Lady Presidents with six points.

--------------------------The Burr & Burton Academy Lady Bulldogs hoop squad continues to roll, recently travelling to Brandon and easily knocking off Otter Valley, 62-38.

Jenna Hoffman led way for the Bulldogs with 19 points, while Kelsey Kelleher added 10. Kristy Pinkham led the Otters with 13.

The win (at press time) put the Lady Bulldogs at an impressive 13-2 record on the season.

Local Hockey Action Staying in Manchester, the Lady Bulldog hockey squad recently travelled to White River Junction, dropping a tough, 7-4

loss to the Lady Hurricanes.

Taylor Steadman had two of her three goals in a four-goal third period for the Hurricanes as they pulled away after taking a 3-2 lead through two periods.

Steadman also had three assists and Linnea Burnham two goals for the Hurricanes, who are now 10-5 on the season.

Piper Ferrone had three assists for BBA, who are now3-12-1 on the season.

Jenny Coppin score two goals for the Bulldogs, while Megan Miskovsky and Hannah Corkum each scored a goal. Despite the loss, Megan Chandler had 21 saves in net for BBA. Taylor Thibodeau and Bethany Bouthillier also scored for Hartford, which got 16 saves from Beth Potter.

Local College Hoops In local mens’ college hoops action, Castleton State College recently travelled to Waterville, ME., beating the Thomas College Terriers, 69-59.

Castleton’s Derek Faragon led the way for the Spartans with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Jared Paul added 20 and West Rutland’s own Greg Hughes had six points and a team-high five assists.

The win put Castleton at 10-7 on the season, while Thomas fell to 12-3.

Francisco Alicea led Thomas with 17 points.

--------------------------In Farmington, Maine, Green Mountain College lost a tough one to Maine-Farmington, 6845. Rui Carmo led the way for GMC with 20 point and eight rebounds.

Yellow Jackets Put The Sting On Bellows Falls Story and photos by Joe Milliken - Sports Editor The Windsor Yellow Jackets recently visited Westminster to take on Bellows Falls, knocking off the Terriers, 75-33, at Holland Gym. From the get-go, the Yellow Jackets’ run-andgun offense and trapping full court defense was simply too much for the Terriers, as Windsor jumped out to a 12-2 lead, turning that into a 23-6 advantage after one quarter.

Jacksts poured it on, through the offense of Gavin Callahan, Tanner Dana and Jacob Page, and took a 42-23 lead into half time.

To the young Terriers’ credit they kept working hard, but Windsor would stretch their lead to 20+ points by the fourth quarter and cruising to an easy win.
