By Lou Varricchio

newmarketpress@denpubs.com Ludlow was one of the first towns selected to participate in the e-Vermont Community Broadband Project, which helps rural communities bridge the Ò digital divideÓ by offering assistance to individuals, businesses, governments, organizations, schools and community groups interested in improving their use of online resources. E-Vermont is a partnership of 11 organizations, each of which brings a particular expertise to the project. One of the partners, the Vermont State Colleges, is offering free workshops to Ludlow residents this winter. These workshops are designed to help beginners become comfortable with computers and the online world. CLEAR SAILING—The Okemo Mountain Snowboard Team in Ludlow sports advanced riders (between ages 8-18). The team has used Okemo’s five-terrain parks in addition to the mountain’s superpipe. Blind Faith Terrain Park, in the South Face area, has rollers, bank turns and tabletops. The Dew Zone is on the main mountain next to the superpipe. The Nor’Easter Terrain Park is the longest. Hot Dog Hill is geared to beginners.

The proposed Vermont Scenic Byway Designation of Route 100 has been a long time coming, according to community leaders involved in the project. The plan, when realized, will increase tourism and the local economies of towns along the byway. The movement to reimage the highway as both a tourist and economic artery is the result of a joint effort of several town representatives including Pittsfield, Killington, Bridgewater, Plymouth, Ludlow and Andover, the Okemo Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Office of Killington Economic Development and Tourism, several local businesses, and the Southern Windsor County/ Two Rivers-Ottauquechee Regional Planning Commissions.. This designation offers travelers historic, cultural, scenic and recreational information and waypoint centers about the towns and villages along the byway, according to byway publicity materials. The corridor committee has finalized its corridor management plan that identifies these resources along the Route 100 Byway, according to Marji Graf of the Okemo Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce. Graf said the plan also includes a vision for the future of the byway and strategies to improve and enhance the resources and destinations along the way. Route 100 slices through VermontÕ s ancient, rocky backbone. There are many spectacular mountain views along the highway. Route 100 starts (or ends, depending on your compass points) at the Canadian border and ends at the Massachusetts stateline. It is the longest Vermont state highway route. Travel Guide of America claims that many photographers consider Route 100 to be Ò the best route in the state for viewing fall foliage.Ó A public meeting of the Vermont Scenery Preservation Council wil be held March 24 at 7 p.m. at the President Calvin Coolidge Museum and Education Center at 3780 Route 100a in Plymouth. The planning committee will present its byway plans. Public attendance is welcomed.

Blood supplies dwindling in state, says Red Cross By Lou Varricchio

newmarketpress@denpubs.com Severe winter weather in Vermont and elsewhere in New England and the Middle Atlantic regions not only affected local economies, it has also endangered the lives of our most vulnerable citizens thanks to dwindling blood supplies locally. The Red Cross in Vermont has issued an appeal for blood donations to meet all hospital needs and to respond to emergency traumas where large quantities of blood are needed.

According to the American Red Cross here, most of the eastern half of the United States in recent weeks has seen the cancellation of more than 14,000 blood and platelet donations. The ARC is urging all eligible blood donors in Vermont to help boost the blood supply back up to normal levels. Ò The winter storms have made a huge impact on the local inventory management system, which can typically move blood products to where theyÕ re needed most. In fact, we have not seen the blood supply ...Turn to page 11 to read more on the blood shortage

Vermont blood donors dropped by an American Red Cross blood donation stand at the Middlebury VFW to help shore up regional low blood supplies. The ARC in Vermont is seeking blood donors after recent storms caused a shortfall 8,000 or more donations. The area lost more than 2,200 blood donations compared to last year.
