Logger coming to town to help fire department Shows scheduled next Friday, Saturday at Saranac High School By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com SARANAC — It’s the first time comedian Rusty DeWees has performed in Saranac, and members of the Saranac Volunteer Fire Department are responsible for bringing him. DeWees, who is best known for his stage name, “The Logger,” will perform next weekend — Friday, April 2, and Saturday, April 3 — at Saranac High School to benefit the fire department. “It’s his first time in Saranac and we’ve got him,” said Wayne Emerson, one of the organizers for the event on behalf of the department. Emerson said it was during a fire department meeting one night that members discussed how they could raise money for the department’s general fund.

“I just came up with the idea and started e-mailing Rusty. We traded e-mails back and forth and he agreed to do the show,” said Emerson. Sponsoring a one-man comedy show is something the department hasn’t done before. Having The Logger come to town is a way to give people a break from the ordinary fundraisers they may grow tired of, said Emerson. “It’s something different,” he said. “It’s not what your typical fundraiser fire departments do like a gun raffle or giving away a Skidoo. We want to give the people something new.” In his show, DeWees plays several offbeat, rural characters. Next weekend’s show will feature new routines, North Country style music with Champion Old Time Fiddler Don Commo and DeWees playing guitar and singing.

In a press release, DeWees said he looks forward to hosting the shows next weekend and interacting with audiences. “This time of year is perfect to get out and chuckle the mud season dampness out of your bones,” he said. Emerson said he’s never seen DeWees perform, but looks forward to the show as well. “I’ve heard a lot of good things,” said Emerson. “Friends of mine have seen him a few times and they love him.” The show will be held next Friday and Saturday each night at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at the door or by calling Emerson at 293-8131 or Cole Bunker at 492-2014. Tickets are also available at the fire department on State Route 3 this Monday, March 29, from 6-9 p.m.

Helping Christopher

Benefit Saturday for young boy now to be held at Ganienkeh bingo hall By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PERU — Support continues to grow for Christopher Goheens, a young boy with serious heart problems. Christopher ’s uncle, Shawn Agoney, is organizing a Texas Hold ‘Em tournament this Saturday, March 27, to raise money for his 8year-old nephew’s ongoing medical expenses. The Peru Primary School thirdgrader has a condition known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which requires much medical attention and has caused him severe health problems in the past. His condition has required him to have routine visits to Boston Children’s

Hospital to see a specialist, which is not an inexpensive thing, said Agoney. “It costs a lot of money to go to Boston, which I’m sure can be stressful,” said Agoney. “We wanted to do this because if he ends up getting really, really sick, the money’s there to get him where he needs to be.” The tournament was originally scheduled to be held at the Rainbow Wedding and Banquet Hall on Woods Falls Road, but, due to a scheduling conflict, the hall was unavailable and the tournament location was changed, said Agoney. It will now be held at the Ganienkeh Territorial High Stakes Bingo on Devils Den Road.

Nutrition on the menu The Clinton County Nutrition Program for the Elderly took a closer focus at nutrition for senior citizens earlier this week in recognition of “March for Meals.” The annual national campaign raises awareness of senior hunger and encourages action on a local level.
