Plattsburgh supervisor looking for third term

Banners flown around town to commemorate local veterans

By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STA FF W RITER

PLATTSBURGH | As election season quickly approaches, political candidates across the town and city of Plattsburgh have begun announcing their runnings for the year 2020. One of these candidates running is current and twice-elected Town Supervisor Michael Cashman, 38, the youngest elected town supervisor in Plattsburgh. Cashman released a short video, available on Youtube, toward the beginning of May to announce his running for re-election. The 46second clip contains Cashman giving a statement on what he plans to do during his next term, which, according to him, includes getting, “A full-time supervisor who listens to your needs and leads on your behalf.” Despite the financial strain between the city and town from a 1992 project, and a land dispute, Cashman remains hopeful that, all differences aside, he can be the one to help bring the community, the city and town of Plattsburgh together. “I’m running again to continue working with a dynamic team here at town hall and on the council to stay focused on things like infrastructure, a community that’s a great place to live, work, play and invest in and continuing to see opportunities to become original collaborator,” Cashman said in an interview with The Sun.

PLATTSBURGH | Throughout the Town of Plattsburgh, banners are proudly displayed along the sides of roads, specifically Smithfield Boulevard, Plaza Boulevard and on the Route 3-22B split from Hammond Lane. These banners, part of the Hometown Heroes program, include the name, picture and rank of a Plattsburgh native who received a Purple Heart during or after their time in the United States military. Also to be featured are people from Plattsburgh currently serving, who were honorably discharged or retired, or are military personnel. A Purple Heart is an honorary presidential award given to soldiers killed or injured in combat while serving in the military. Plattsburgh became an official Purple Heart Town in the later months of 2018, where it was announced that late town supervisor Bernard Amell, who died last year at 94, would be the first recipient of a Hometown Heroes banner. The town will also award Purple Heart recipients designated parking spaces at multiple parking lots and businesses across town. A map on the Plattsburgh website and hanging in town hall will show where each person’s banner is hanging.

Mayor seeks re-election Colin Read says he has more to offer By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STA FF W RITER

Despite his promise to be a “one-term mayor,” Plattsburgh Mayor Colin Read has announced that he will be seeking re-election in 2020. Photo by Sarah Elizabeth Morris

PLATTSBURGH | Mayor Colin Read has decided to run for re-election for 2020, where he hopes to serve his second fouryear term. Despite originally planning to serve just one term, Read has decided that he has more to offer this city, and needs more time to accomplish what he set out to do during his fi rst election. One of Read’s main points is making the City of Plattsburgh stand out more as a city with activities and events, rather than just a tourist area. As of now, there doesn’t seem to be anyone running opposition to Read. Read previously stated while running for his first term that he would not run for a second, and would be a one-term mayor. However, this decision to run again was ex-

Davis announces Senate bid City of Plattsburgh treasurer to run for Little’s seat By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STA FF W RITER

PLATTSBURGH | Current Treasurer for the City of Plattsburgh Kimberly Davis has announced she will be running for State Senate in the 2020 election as a Democrat to represent the 45th district. Davis has been treasurer in Plattsburgh since January 2014. “I am incredibly grateful for the

opportunity to serve the taxpayers of Clinton County as their treasurer,” Davis, 44, said in a press release. “It’s time for new leadership that can do more for the residents of the North Country in the State Senate. Our community needs a representative in the majority that can communicate the different needs of upstate and rural communities. My experience in banking and finance will be an asset during budget negotiations, bringing common sense fiscal responsibility that will serve our communities who need the resources to thrive.” So far, it hasn’t been determined if Sen. Betty Little, 78, who has the spot now, will be running against

Davis. Little, a Republican, has owned the position of the 45th district senator since 2003. She has not announced yet if she is going to be up for re-election in 2020. “I intend to represent all of the 45th, not just one political party,” Davis continued in the press release. “My supporters are political leaders and non-political citizens and they know that I will make fair and balanced decisions regardless of which party is proposing a bill.” Davis will hold an official kickoff event for the start of her campaign Tuesday, June 11, at the Adirondack Room of the Butcher Block from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., where she will be answering questions. ■

plained during a press conference following a city council meeting May 30. “I’ve always said that I’m going to do this job as long as I need to, to put the city in a firm financial foundation,” Read said in a press conference. “Looking at (Plattsburgh’s financial) projections, it looks like we have our work to do; at least into 2023 or 2024. I’m incredibly pleased with the very difficult progress we’ve made up until now.” During the common council meeting, there was a presentation regarding the financial situation of Plattsburgh, and the five-year plan the council has to cut necessary budgets and save money. According to the presentation, “We will increase the unassigned fund balance steadily over the next few years.” The budget will be passed to Read to prepare for the 2020 mayor’s budget. “I’m not ever going to leave the city without great confidence that everything is now in good hands,” Read said at the end of the conference. “There’s nothing more important to me than the fi nancial, fiscal health of the city and the sustainability of the city, so I’ll run again.” ■

When it comes to what Cashman wants to get done in his third term, there is no shortage of ideas. One of his goals is to make Plattsburgh a family-friendly town that locals and tourists alike can enjoy. This includes an “umbrella” of projects, as he put it, that will improve the look and feel of Plattsburgh. “We’re working with the Clinton County American Legion group on the battlefield oral gateway project, which will provide water access on Lake Champlain, as well as honoring our veterans dating all the way back to the American Revolution,” Cashman continued. “I want to provide an outlet for accessible leadership. It’s responding to the concerns of the citizenry for the community.” As of now, there are no known candidates that are running against Cashman for town supervisor. ■

Eagle Mountain preserved Northeast Wilderness Trust buys 2,400-acre retreat By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

CHESTERFIELD | The North Branch of the Boquet River begins alongside a dirt Adirondack road adjacent to a former family retreat dotted with ponds and crossed by streams, where peregrine falcons nest, dragonflies swarm and beds of sage-colored lichen and pink lady slippers float amid banks of emerald moss. Aesthetics aside, the 2,434-acre tract represents a significant link in a swath of mostly protected forestland between Lake Champlain and the High Peaks where wildlife can trace its historic migratory paths uninterrupted by development. “This land has been so gently used over the years that walking around it gives you the impression of being a guest” in the wilderness, said Shelby Perry, stewardship director for the Northeast Wilderness Trust,

which purchased the land for preservation as a privately held wilderness in late May. What will be known as the Eagle Mountain Wilderness Preserve is situated between the Taylor Pond Wild Forest, home to the popular Poke-o-Moonshine Mountain to the north, and the Jay Mountain Wilderness to the south. It was purchased from the Rodgers family for $1.1 million. The organization is continuing to raise funds for the project to pay for taxes and management. Accessed off Trout Pond Road, hikers in the coming weeks will be able to follow a roughly three-mile access road leading over several chattering streams to Clear Pond, where the family had their cabin. A kiosk and a small parking area will mark the trailhead, Perry said. Formal trails will be developed by Champlain Area Trails (CATS) and are expected to be in place by 2020. The land will be open to non-motorized recreation, including hiking, cross-country skiing, canoeing and fishing. Hunting will be allowed by permit.

‘A BIG STEP’

It’s hoped that the tract will become a northern version of the Split Rock Wildway,

a protected corridor stretching from Lake Chaplain near Essex to the Hurricane Mountain Wilderness and High Peaks. The mostly level trail to Clear Pond is rich in wildlife and offers broad views of ponds and wetlands, with an occasional mountain top poking out from among the hardwoods and red and old-growth white pines. Jack pines are also on the property, somewhat of a rarity that far to the south. Zack Porter, the trust’s outreach and communications coordinator, said the property had been in the Rodgers family for nearly a century, and had been lightly touched save for some selected logging through the years. As part of the transitional “West Champlain Hills” between the Champlain Valley and High Peaks, it represents an ecology that is perhaps the most biologically diverse in the park. “In contrast to the great wilderness areas of the High Peaks and Lakes Country of the Central and Western Adirondacks, the easternmost region of the Adirondack Park remains underrepresented when it comes to forever-wild landscapes,” said Jon Leibowitz, executive director of Northeast Wilderness Trust. “Eagle Mountain Wilderness Preserve is a big step toward ensuring that low-elevation areas receive equal wilderness repre-

sentation within the beloved Adirondacks.” According to the trust, the acquisition of Eagle Mountain will also protect more than five miles of headwater streams that feed into the North Branch of the Boquet River and support native brook trout habitat. The high water quality also supports the Eastern Pearlshell, a rare freshwater mussel found in only a few locations in New York state and is at risk throughout its historical habitat due to water pollution and dams. The Northeast Wilderness Trust has preserved 35,000 acres, primarily in New England. The conservation easement for Eagle Mountain will be held by Adirondack Land Trust. “This project is both innovative and unique in the Adirondack Park,” Mike Carr, executive director of the Adirondack Land Trust, said in a statement. “First, this is not like other Adirondack wilderness; this is private forever-wild land that will now be opened to the public for uses that are compatible with its wilderness character. Also, the Adirondack Land Trust is just one of several partners using their different expertise to protect and manage this special place, leveraging the strengths of all involved.” ■

Opinion

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

And the survey says... We’ve witnessed some remarkable changes in the media landscape over the last decade. Quoting from an article By Dan Alexander appearing in the Wall Street • PUBLISHER • Journal last week, “All the companies have struggled over the past decade with steep advertising and print readership declines. This year, both GateHouse and Gannett have had substantial rounds of layoffs, while McClatchy offered buyouts to hundreds of employees.” With that as a backdrop, we’ve been a part of two recent surveys. The first was a local survey of North Country residents looking for feedback on where they find their local news. This survey was conducted by Circulation Verification Council (CVC) of St. Louis, Missouri. The second survey was conducted on a national basis with media buyers by CVC in cooperation with Standard Rate and Data Service (SRDS). Clearly times are changing, and while we don’t have space to cover all the questions, I would like to share a few details. When it comes to the local news source of choice, 88.9 percent of responders selected The Sun followed by WPTZ at 46.3 percent and tied for third was the PressRepublican and WCAX at 33.3 percent. All other forms of local media were in the 20 percent range and below. When asked specifically about newspaper choices alone, The Sun ranked at 70 percent, while the Post Star, Press-Republican and Daily Enterprise all came in below 10 percent. Those numbers are no surprise considering the circulation advantage The Sun now holds. In Clinton County, The Sun is mailed to 28,963 homes, while the PressRepublican has 6,681 subscribers based on their June 2017 AAM Audit. In Essex County, The Sun is mailed to 19,375 homes, while Press-Republican June 2017 audit shows 1,367 subscribers, and the Post Star has 199 subscribers in Essex County according to their June 2018 AAM Audit. The Daily Enterprise is not audited, but their total circulation is listed on SRDS as approximately 3,600. In northern Warren County, The Sun is mailed to 13,223 homes. In the same circulation area, the Post Star has 1,009 subscribers according to their June 2018 audit. In the result of the national media buyers survey, 91 percent of media buyers say they have experienced placing ads in free community newspapers. When asked about trustworthiness, free community newspapers ranked the highest with 67 percent in the very trustworthy and trustworthy category, followed closely by paid, daily papers at 60 percent. The belief that free, community newspapers provide excellent value for advertisers was at 69 percent, and 93 percent of media buyers believe free newspapers fill a unique niche in the media mix. All positive signs moving forward. ■

Plattsburgh parking plans must be clearly defined

Editor’s note: This letter refers to Sarah Morris’ article, “Preliminary plans OK’d for Durkee Street,” which ran in the June 1 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: The June 1 article on OK’d plans for Durkee Street needs attention. The statement for planned “additional parking along Durkee Street” is nebulous and can be misleading in light of the large number of unaccounted for parking spaces required due to the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) project and growth. For example, a prudent number of these spaces required may be the sum of the 289 lost spaces, additional spaces required due to the DRI buildup at that site, anticipated parking increases due to normal growth in the city and an additional number of spaces required/lost during snow emergency events. This should be a published and finite number competent council has established and could easily be about 580 (289 + 130 + 100 + X). I have reviewed the city council minutes and Plattsburgh Parking Advisory Committee (PPAC) minutes to date and nowhere is a required target number indicated. Perhaps it is an unachievable goal, hidden in unpopular paid parking schemes, proposing to move some operations to Dock Street, ranting about increased tax revenue, the value of a costly $26 plus million dollar buildup that the tenants will have to pay for over a basic parking lot, etc. The PPAC minutes clearly indicate public opposition to the project and concern for lack of available spaces. On April 25, the official statement “The City is planning alternate parking, and plans will be in place before the developers break ground” read into the minutes. Note there is no number of spaces indicated and “plans” are not good enough to competently move forward with. If

Abortion laws harmful to women

To the Editor: Women’s rights and healthcare are under siege in the U.S. Fortunately, in New York the passage of the Reproductive Health Act ensures that women in New York have access to a full range of reproductive healthcare services now and in the future. Passage of Roe v. Wade in 1973 upheld a woman’s right of privacy to make her own decisions about whether and when to become a parent, including the right to access safe, legal abortion services. These personal, difficult decisions made by a woman, with guidance from her health and support network, are made within the context of the woman’s faith, health, age and circumstance. Some of us remember horror stories prior to 1973 of women suffering the consequences of an illegal or self-inflicted abortion. Then, and in the future, if states are allowed to ban abortions, an unjust two-tier system of access to abortion services will be re-established. More affluent women will be able to travel to states that protect abortion rights, while low-income women seeking an abortion will have no alternative but to attempt one themselves or seek out an illegal provider. Two options posing grave risk to women. Demonizing and intimidating women who have made the very personal decision to have an abortion shows lack of respect and understanding. Six out of the nine states that passed abortion bans this year did not include an exemption for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. A man rapes a child or a woman and the victim will not have the choice to abort the fetus. Yet, in some of these states,

the punishment for a convicted rapist can be less than the punishment for a doctor convicted of providing the abortion. To me, these bans capsulize the misogyny running rampant in our country today. We are better than that. - Margot Gold, Saranac Lake ■

Independence Party members not Independent

To the Editor: Many voters desiring no political party affi liation unintentionally enroll in the Independence Party. Seven years ago, the New York Daily News interviewed 200 Independence Party members and found that 169 thought they were independents — not affiliated with any party. Essex County has 1,764 Independence Party members. Because of confusion over the party name, it’s possible that many of them intended to have no party affi liation. They checked what appeared to be an independent block on their registration form, but actually enrolled as an Independence Party member. The Independence Party’s platform — available here: ipny.org/platform.html — is primarily oriented toward fiscal austerity, privatization of government services and campaign reform. The party has been somewhat dormant recently but it has been active in the past, cross-endorsing other party’s candidates and attracting celebrity candidates. If you’re an unintentional Independence Party member, its very easy to change to Independent (no party affiliation) — or enroll in another party. Registration forms can be obtained at many post offices or downloaded here: co.essex.ny.us/downloads/VoterRegistrationForm.pdf - Frank Pagano, chair of the Town of Jay Democratic Committee ■

City Council presents 5-year budget plan Electric charging stations discussed By Sarah Elizabeth Morris STA FF W RITER

PLATTSBURGH | Directly preceding last week’s City Council Meeting, the Municipal Lighting Department (MLD) held a short meeting regarding the use of electricity throughout the city. The MLD looked to get a write-off for six unpaid bills between November 2017 to April 2018, resulting in a write-off for a total of more than $26,000. The first three months that were written off didn’t reach $2,000, but the winter months spiked up to more than $6,000. MLD Manager Bill Treacy explained why the electricity price was so high during these months, which had been sparking anger from some citizens.

“Whether you have lace curtains on the windows or heavy drapes on the windows, when you have drafts coming in underneath the doors and windows, all those things factor in,” Treacy said, pointing out why electricity works twice as hard to heat up the house. “People don’t think about those things.” Another discussion that took place between the council and Treacy regarded electric charging stations, specifically newer, non-Tesla charging stations. The plan would be to line them up along the street by winter 2020. These new stations, unlike the ones at the mall, would take only 10-15 minutes to charge a newer electric car. This has been discussed in the past as well, but has yet to come to a definitive decision. After the MLD meeting wrapped up, it moved right into the City Council meeting, where Ward 2 Councilor Mike Kelly presented the group’s five-year budget plan for Plattsburgh. The PowerPoint presentation laid out accomplishments, as well as goals and guesses about the economy for the next five years. According to Kelly’s presentation, the council has a “goal

of between 5-10%” by the year 2020. They also have plans to “continue to monitor health-care expenses, monitor overtime costs, monitor arbitration costs, promote revenue opportunities such as DRI and other city-wide construction projects and BAN interest should remain between 1.5-2%.” Mayor Colin Read addressed some issues people have regarding the future of the Durkee Street Lot determined by the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI). One question posed to the mayor specifically had to do with parking in the winter and where residents and business owners would park in cases of emergency snow clearing procedures. “They will be provided with underground parking,” Read said at a press conference after the meeting. “There’s nothing quite more than the underground parking total construction cost than we anticipated because of the strong community interest in parking and ensuring there’s more than enough parking to meet the needs of the businesses. (Plattsburgh) is also providing at least 30 public spots within Durkee Street above ground to be administered by the city.” ■

SUNY chancellor awards four for excellence Recipients to be honored later this year

PLATTSBURGH | Four faculty and staff members at SUNY Plattsburgh have been honored by the SUNY Board of Trustees and Chancellor Kristina Johnson with the 2019 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. Recipients will receive a certificate and Chancellor’s Excellence Medallion. They will be honored later this year. Recipients for the 2019 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence are: • Dr. Adrian Carr, adjunct, department of music: Excellence in Adjunct Teaching • Ethel Facteau, library clerk three: Excellence in Classified Service • Dr. Eric Leibensperger, associate professor of environmental science: Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities • Dr. Sandra Rezac, associate professor of sociology: Excellence in Faculty Service

DR. ADRIAN CARR

The Grammy-nominated Carr began his undergraduate studies of music at SUNY Buffalo. He holds a bachelor of music from Julliard, with his M.F.A. and doctorate from Princeton. He is a member of the American Society of Composers and Poets, National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the Audio Engineering Society. Prior to returning to Princeton for his doctorate in 2011, Carr already had more than 25 years in the profession, establishing his own re-

Church

cording studio in Manhattan as well as working with major record labels and indie clients in his mastering facility in Montreal. In addition to teaching applied lessons in music composition, Carr has taught introduction to music technology, music theory one and three, and world music among others. His contributions extend beyond the classroom, hosting recitals and concerts on campus and in the community. He also assisted in the design of the new music arts management program in the department. “I taught five courses this semester as an adjunct between the communications and music departments; that’s two more than a full professor, so you can imagine that it was a challenging semester,” Carr said. “So it was very gratifying to get recognition for the many things I’ve done for the college since I came here in 2016.”

ETHEL FACTEAU

Facteau joined the staff at SUNY Plattsburgh as a clerk one/dispatcher at University Police in 1993. In fall 1996, she took a provisional appointment/promotion to library clerk two in Feinberg Library. She was granted permanent status in 1997. In April 2009, she was promoted to library clerk three in interlibrary loan, Feinberg Library. Over the course of her career, Facteau has supervised hundreds of students, cross-training them in both the borrowing and lending side of the department and has worked with hundreds of faculty and staff members to assist with their needs. She has served on the campus RADIUS Development Committee and Affirmative Action

Services

Committee through the Title IX Office, and serves as the president of the Plattsburgh chapter of the Civil Service Employees Association. “When I was approached by Dean Holly Heller-Ross, who told me she was nominating me for this award, I was both humbled and honored,” Facteau said. “When informed that I had received the award, I was elated. This award is especially important for classified staff, as we all play an important role, vital to the mission/operation of the campus.”

DR. ERIC LEIBENSPERGER

Leibensperger joined the faculty in the Center for Environmental Science as an assistant professor in 2012. An atmospheric scientist specializing in atmospheric chemistry (air climate) and climate change, he earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and physics from Ithaca College and his master’s and doctorate in applied physics from Harvard University. He has completed post-doctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Science in 2012. He was promoted to associate professor in 2017. His studies focus on the interactions of air pollution and climate change as well as the dynamics of the atmosphere. He expanded his research at SUNY Plattsburgh to include studies of the climate of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks. Since arriving at Plattsburgh, he has pursued more than $1 million in 18 external funding grants. All of his funded projects and proposals were designed to include undergraduate researchers and to engage the community.

“I am proud of my contributions to SUNY Plattsburgh and the greater community through my scholarship,” Leibensperger said. “I am proud that my research has had enough impact on the scientific community and student learning to be recognized. I am also very thankful.”

DR. SANDRA REZAC

Rezac first arrived at SUNY Plattsburgh as a visiting assistant professor in 2002, joining the faculty of sociology as an assistant professor in 2004. She was promoted to associate professor and became chair of the department of sociology and criminal justice in the fall of 2008. When criminal justice became its own department, she remained chair of sociology from January 2012 to September 2015. She began her third three-year term as chair in September 2018, and as such continues to carry a full-time teaching load. In addition to departmental service, Rezac has served on numerous college committees, the Faculty Senate, the National Council on Family Relations, the Board of Directors of the ADK Humane Society and more. She earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. “There are many faculty at SUNY Plattsburgh who engage in extraordinary service, so I feel very honored to have been selected to receive this award,” Rezac said. “I’m particularly committed to shared governance and have served on our local and SUNY-wide faculty senates for many years. It’s important to me to embrace the unique opportunity that faculty have to help shape the academic direction of the college. ■

“We’ve always been told the first year is typically the smallest year,” Cashman said about the number of banners. “As time goes on, people will become interested in it.” According to the Hometown Heroes application on the Plattsburgh town website, “This program is non-political and non-partisan and is intended to serve as a living memorial to those service men and women from the Town of Plattsburgh.” Right now, applications are closed for this season, but applications for the next banner seasons are still open to fill out. Each application should include the name of the Purple Heart recipient, as well as their rank and a photo. Each banner costs $250, and after two years, the family of the Purple Heart recipient will get it back. Applications for the next Hometown Heroes season can be sent to the Town Hall or mailed to 151 Banker Road. ■

Each week we will publish a list of Death Notices at no charge. These notices will include name, date of death & birth, age, town and the name of the funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Like most newspapers, we do need to charge a small fee of $65 for a 250-word obituary which will include a picture (if supplied) in the paper. Larger sizes are also available. If the funeral home doesn’t place the obituary in The SUN you may submit an obituary by calling 518-873-6368, or you may email the Obituary to shannonc@suncommunitynews.com, and she will let you know the cost if it’s over 250 words.

Hornets claim Class B softball crown

By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

PLATTSBURGH | Eighth-grader Calli Fitzwater threw a two-hitter in the circle for the Plattsburgh High varsity softball team as it scored a 4-1 win over Saranac to secure the Section VII/Class B title May 31. “I just wanted to go out and perform at my best for my teammates,” Fitzwater said. “It’s something they have all worked for and we have not won this in 14 years and we were able to handle the moment really well.” “Calli never really had a bad game for us, she was always there and we tried to be there for her when she needed to be picked up,” senior Molly Channell said. “In her first varsity start, I turned to our scorekeeper and said Calli is going to keep us in every game we play,” Hornet co-coach Joe McMahon said. “We didn’t win every game, but she did keep us in every game.” Fitzwater was joined by her battery mate, Alyssa Hemmingway, who is also an eighth-grader. The two grew up playing together. “They have been playing together since they could walk,” co-coach Cindy McMahon said. “We have been best friends since we were in third grade and I became her catcher when her stepdad told me I had a catcher’s arm,” Hemmingway said. “This was an amazing team to win with.” Fitzwater also credited her stepfather. “My stepdad has been there for me with my pitching and my teammates have supported me all of the way,” she said. While Fitzwater was busy silencing Saranac’s bats, the Hornets scored twice in the first inning and two more in the fifth on a two-RBI double by Abbi Crahan. “My coach had told me to be patient and I would get my pitch, and I saw that pitch coming and I just knew I was going to be able to drive it,” Crahan said. “I’m glad we got this win — the seniors deserve this so much.” “We needed that and Abbi has been one who has come up big for us all season long,” McMahon said. The coaches said it was a fitting way to send off their quartet of seniors in Channell, Lauren Schmidt, Delaney McCormick and Hannah Giroux, who had come through the system together with the coaches.

“We started with these four seniors when they were in seventh grade and we moved up with them and this was the goal,” McMahon said. “It was so intense because you are just thinking and going back through all of the years we have been together and it’s basically been a family,” Schmidt said. “We went through everything in the season and to get here and win this, it was a great experience for all of us.” “We have worked so hard through all these seasons and to come out in our last sectional game and get a win is amazing,” McCormick added. “It is such a great experience to be here because we have literally grown up playing softball together and it is just a surreal feeling right now,” Giroux said. Aislyn Liberty, who pitched a solid game for the Chiefs in defeat, also had one of the two Saranac hits in the game,

while Kalli Gebo connected on a double. “We saw Saranac coming through the playoffs and we knew it was going to be tough to beat a team like that three times in a season,” McMahon said. “You have to bring it against Saranac and they are not going to give you anything.”

BOBCATS FALL TO SENTINELS

One year after falling in the Section VII/Class C final, the Ticonderoga Sentinels rode the wave of a nine-run second inning and stellar performance from junior Samantha Montville to reclaim the Class C title with a 20-3 win over Northern Adirondack May 30. For NAC, Anna Brown had a pair of hits, while Kira LaBarge had an RBI single in the first and Grace Thume added a two-RBI single in the sixth. Hannah Jock and Monica-Lynn Charland also had singles in the loss. ■

Saranac medley relay team seeks trip to nationals

By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

SARANAC | A unique relay event has brought a quartet of Saranac girls track and field athletes together, heading to North Carolina for the national championships. The team of Rachael Woodruff, Mackenzie Converse, Heather Dutko and Elise LePage will compete in the medley relay, an event where Dutko will run a 400 meter Leg, Con-

verse 800, LePage 1,200 and Woodruff 1,600. To help offset the costs, Saranac assistant Matt Medeiros has created a Go Fund Me account (search “help send a team to nationals”) in the hopes of raising $1,500 to help with expenses. For each of the athletes, the trip will be more about the experience of being at a highlevel event than the competition itself. “It had been our goal from the beginning of the season to get the qualifying time and

am sure it will be a lot of fun,” Dutko added. Converse added that she looks forward to the challenge. “I feel we have prepared steadily all season and as a team we have all been successful this season,” she said. “I am looking forward to the atmosphere down there and the ability of the athletes.” The team will leave for the national event June 12, with races scheduled for the weekend. ■

we were able to get it at the Eddy Meet by composite times,” Woodruff said. “We just want to go down and enjoy the experience together because we have never had the chance to do this before.” “The season has gone really well and we have all been working very hard and dropping our times,” LePage said. “We are ready to compete and we just want to go down, run our best times and have fun.” “It is going to be a great experience and I

The Cougars made their impact offensively in the third inning, scoring five times as Bryan Claudio started the frame with a triple, Noah Gonyo followed with an RBI single, Hunter LaValley an RBI single and Kaleb LaBarge a two-RBI single. LaBarge, Gonyo and Angel Claudio each had a pair of singles in the game, while Hunter LaValley had a single and double, scoring twice. PLATTSBURGH | As Ethan Garrand stepped on third base and launched the ball toward first, he was putting out 40 years of anticipation for a moment long coming for Northeastern Clinton baseball players and fans. On the completion of the double play, the Cougars celebrated their 8-5 win over the Peru Indians May 31, claiming the Section VII/ Class B title, their first in the sport since 1980. “If the ball was hit to me, I was ready to go get the double play and get out of the inning,” Garrand said of the last play. “I was able to touch my bag and get the throw off. I was thinking, just don’t throw it over his head.” “As soon as I saw Ethan had the ball I knew he was going to do something good with it because he is one of the best fielders around,” said Brayden LaValley, who pitched a complete game for the Cougars in the victory. “I knew it was going to be a tough game and I just wanted to throw as many strikes as I could and keep my team in it.” “He’s a senior leader on this team and someone you would want the ball in their hand in a game like this,” coach Jeff Norton said. “We had trust in him that he was going to be able to settle down and it was going to be his game to win or lose.”

In a classic pitcher’s duel Saturday afternoon, it was the quick-strike ability of the Bolton/Schroon Lake offense that was able to score four times in the opening inning for a 4-1 Section VII/Class D championship game victory over Chazy June 1. Following the opening inning, where the Eagles surrendered all four runs, Chazy pitcher Ben Norcross was nearly perfect while keeping his team in the game. From the second inning on, Norcross did not allow a hit, striking out eight and only allowing a pair of walks. Matt Parent, Connor McCarthy (RBI) and Bruce Juneau had the three Eagles hits, while Preston Laurin reached base twice on walks. ■

Here and now, we’d stop time if we could. Because when kids are being kids, we all feel better.

Let’s get every child covered.
