The Adirondack Coast 3D-Print Sprint, a weekend-long science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) event for local high school and college students, returned for its second year last weekend with the addition of a cyber security challenge and hack-a-thon.

Six teams of five competed in the print sprint this year — and the reigning champs, a team of students from Northeastern Clinton Central School (NCCS), won again.

Tasked with designing a functional maglev vehicle and propeller, printing their design with a 3D printer, assembling their project, and creating a slide presentation about the final product all within 24 hours, NCCS team member Dalton Benjamin said that their original design had included way more elements than they’d had time to print.

“Imagine a sphinx from Egypt,” he said. “Way too much.”

Their mentors suggested paring down the design significantly. At first, they didn’t want to do it — but eventually headed the device.

After 7-8 different design cycles, the students completed their vehicle; a small, flat base with a motor, ridged propeller and magnets underneath.

In the end, their mentors’ advice ultimately paid off: When they’d completed their final design, they had three hours to spare.

During the judging period, the team’s vehicle moved scores faster than the others on the magnetic track.

For their work, Quinn Atwood, Benjamin, Cook, Seth Albertus and Gage Root won first place and a prize of $250.

“It feels really great,” said Atwood, 13, the team’s newest member.

Each student said they planned on pursuing some sort of STEM career in the future; environmental science, engineering and robotics, architecture. Maybe even

Benjamin and Albertus just nine days prior had received the Rising Star Award at the 118th symposium of the New York State Section of the American Physical Society, a college-level conference in Binghamton.

The students used Galton Boards, otherwise known as “bean machines,” to demonstrate the Theory of Probability.

“It was kind of like ‘Plinko’ from the Price is Right,” one of the student’s advisors, SUNY Plattsburgh Associate Professor of Physics Ken Podolak, told The Sun. Marbles were dropped in from the top of the machine and hit a series of pegs. Benjamin and Albertus studied the probability of each marble landing where it did.

The duo cinched the award from a pack of 18 presenters, Podolak said.

The award was the result of three months of work, according to advisor and NCCS teacher Dave Collins.

“They were rewarded for the effort they put into it,” he said. ■

Campus mourns loss of late director Students, faculty remember Kyla Relaford

PLATTSBURGH | She was an unstoppable force. A fire that ignited the lives of everyone she knew. A tidal wave of unwavering, passionate support.

Kyla Relaford, who served area students as the director of SUNY Plattsburgh’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), passed away unexpectedly on April 15. She was 37.

The legacy of this woman, a Plattsburgh native, is immeasurable in its impact, said attendees of a vigil on Thursday.

“Since the moment I met her, she was an influential person in my life,” said Emmanuel Rodriguez, the president of the Beta Sigma Chapter of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity.

As a SUNY Plattsburgh student, Rodriguez, like many others, has always had a list of goals he wanted to achieve in life. He kept it close to his chest.

But with Relaford, he divulged his dreams.

All of them. “‘Do it,’ she said,” he told a packed Warren Ballroom during a candlelight vigil in memory of the late director. “‘Never doubt yourself.

There’s a lot of people that’ll doubt you in life. Never doubt yourself.’”

He paused for a moment. Looked into the crowd, fighting back against his emotions, steeling himself.

“Let’s live on in her legacy,” he continued.

“Let’s show everyone that made a sacrifice for us that it was worth it.”

Just before the crowd departed, students passed around white balloons and each wrote one last message to Relaford.

One those messages was simple: “This degree is 4 you Mama.”

They moved into Amity Plaza, the crowd assembling in a wide circle.

Relaford was born May 24, 1980 in Plattsburgh, to parents William and Kathy Relaford. Among others, she leaves behind a husband, Michael, and a young son.

Martinez said Relaford was completely selfless.

With her, it was always about someone else. About you.

“It was never about her,” he said.

But as the flock of white balloons, emblazoned with the last goodbyes of the people whose lives were forever changed by her spirit, flew toward the grey-blue evening sky?

That moment was all about her. ■

She looked at him and told him: “‘You can do this,’” he said.

“And it’s the career that I wanted and I didn’t even know. But she saw what I could be.”

Students, faculty and community members alike shuffled in amidst a din of quiet conversation. From a line of four LED tealights, soft light flickered from a podium at the front of the hall, emblazoned with the SUNY Plattsburgh emblem.

A handful of students, one by one, stepped to the podium and told their stories — their stories of her. Tears flowed freely down the faces of students who’d known her. Friends threw comforting arms over one another’s shoulders.

At last a woman took to the stage. A middle school teacher. Relaford’s sister.

“Please take this opportunity to learn and be the best you can be,” Tiana Relaford told students.

Tiana said growing up in the 1980s, she and her sister were always big fans of the movie “Rocky.”

On her Facebook profile, Relaford described herself as the following: “A tidal wave. Loving deeply. People not policies. One life. Live it wild. We need each other.”

She embodied, and did, all of those things in her life — and that’s exactly how those she left behind remember her.

“She really said it like it is,” said Levi Martinez, a counselor who worked with Relaford at the EOP office. “She had this way of talking, of reaffirming — that it always led to a kind of ‘duh’ moment.”

She saw past everyone’s doubts to what they could be, if only they got out of their own way, he said.

In recollecting her, Martinez smiled fondly, pausing for a moment.

“You know, I owe this job to her.”

He’d worked for a short time with EOP, but when a position opened up, he wasn’t going to apply.

“She wanted to know why I hadn’t applied,” he said. “I just said, ‘Kyla, I’m not qualified!’”

One of 14 recommendations listed in the study of parking in the downtown core outlines an avenue to implementing paid parking, a direction that appeared likely as councilors fielded questions on the intricacies of implementing such a system.

“It has always seemed inevitable to me that we do switch to paid parking,” said Councilor Rachelle Armstrong (Ward 1), noting that parking now is “poorly enforced.”

Councilors declined to elaborate on a specific fee structure they had in mind, repeatedly noting that nothing was finalized, though Councilor Patrick McFarlin (Ward 5) said he’d be in favor of a mounting scale with the price of parking increasing the longer a car stays in a single spot.

“Will city residents need to fill the gap in funding (for parking infrastructure)?”

Dorjee asked.

He also questioned what would happen to locals if the city funded a new parking system, it doesn’t work, and a wave of new revenue from increased tourism doesn’t come.

Would residents shoulder the cost?

“If something happens and the local economy tanks, that is a possibility,” Parking Consultant Jon Forster said.

Armstrong said that grant funding would need to be found to help with infrastructure costs.

Councilors declined to detail a definitive timeline, though multiple residents asked specifically for projected dates when decisions would need to be made.

“I want to know the definite timeline for this,” resident Kevin Lewis said.

Forster said that for Plattsburgh, implementing a parking system — between hiring a ticketing officer, constructing meters or opening up spots elsewhere — would take anywhere from 6-9 months.

The state wants movement on the Durkee Street lot by this fall, Community Development Director Matthew Miller said.

“So the bare minimum (amount of time) we don’t even have,” Lewis said. “We are in

deep, not-good waters.”

According to Miller, the council will compile a list of recommendations to hand off to an economic development consultant, ideally by May 3.

That consultant, according to city bid documents, will be tasked with attracting a developer for the Durkee Street property; choosing a developer from any incoming applications; and development coordination while keeping an eye on parking replacement, existing business needs and more.

“We were instructed that a change would be necessary,” Councilor Joshua Kretser (Ward 6) told residents. “Your input will play a role in the decision-making process.”

ideally hire a parking enforcement officer before fall, when the Durkee Street redevelopment was likely to move forward.

Redevelopment of the Durkee Street lot into a park and mixed-use building with riverfront access accounts for $4.3 million of $10 million awarded by the state through the DRI. Any changes from the current parking system — signs placed throughout the city imposing various time limits on each parking spot — would ideally be implemented before Jan. 1, 2019, Miller said.

Eliminating the parking from the Durkee Street lot would remove nearly 300 parking spaces from the downtown core.

PLATTSBURGH | As the Plattsburgh Common Council preps a list of recommendations for overhauling the city’s parking system, some downtown workers and business owners are cautioning that a lack of parking availability caused by the redevelopment of the Durkee Street lot could be detrimental to downtown businesses.

Saverio Minardi, the owner of downtown staple Pizza Bono, is sounding the alarm.

For the City of Plattsburgh, parking has always been a problem, Minardi told Plattsburgh Common Council last Wednesday at a public hearing on the results of a recent parking study.

The proposed elimination of a portion of the lot’s 289 spaces, a project which garnered $4.3 million in state investment as part of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative, would only make it worse, he said.

“We do need the parking spaces,” Minardi told The Sun. “You cannot take any away.”

IMPACT ON BUSINESS

For 28 years, Minardi has watched from behind the counter of his shop as customers, residents and employees alike circle the block in search of a parking space.

“I’m sure we do lose some business,” he said.

An Italian expat who moved to New York with his wife, who served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Plattsburgh, Minardi has lived in Plattsburgh since the late 1980s.

The city is currently in the process of hiring an economic development consultant that will be tasked with attracting a developer for the property, which is expected to be split

The Common Council doesn’t have the authority to shut down the Durkee Street redevelopment, Councilor Joshua Kretser (Ward 6) told residents last week and the state ultimately chose which projects would receive what amount of funding.

“The state made the decision,” he said.

Danielle Erb, a member of local advocacy group Strong Towns Plattsburgh, disagreed that the council didn’t have any power.

But the discussion of the Durkee Street development, which necessitated the study of parking availability and solutions to lack thereof in the downtown core, was repeatedly shut down by the council.

“This is not a question of whether or not Durkee will be developed,” Armstrong said at the meeting, though she conceded that “the jury is still out” on how public input

Erb argued that some city business owners were struggling to survive as is.

“A lot of them are operating month-to-month,” she said.

“A bad month means they’re gone.”

According to Community Development Director Matthew Miller, the state wants to see movement on the Durkee Street project by the end of this summer — or fall at the latest.

The implementation of a new parking system, which may include paid parking, a ticketing agent or merged lots elsewhere, and the redevelopment of Durkee, will hopefully be executed in tandem, Miller said.

“What we’re struggling with is the timeline,” Erb said.

Minardi concurred with Erb. “Absolutely I’m concerned with the timeline,” he said.

Between his pizza shop, and the apartments that he rents out, parking is vital.

He motioned out the window of Pizza Bono to Clinton Street, which that afternoon was lined with cars parked bumper-to-bumper.

“If nobody has a place to park, no one will want to rent these places.

“It’ll kill all of this. You understand what I’m saying?” ■

I know what you’re thinking. We aren’t out of the woods just yet.

By Dan Alexander may still have an ace • PUBLISHER • or two up his sleeve, but there is nothing like that first day of a new season where it feels like it’s the right season.

It doesn’t really matter if it’s the first significant snowfall of the winter, one of those sizzling hot days of summer, a cold crisp fall day or the first spring day when you can spend the day outside cleaning up after a tough winter and not wearing a coat, hat or gloves.

Last weekend was one of those days where it just felt good to be outside after a long cold winter that doesn’t want to let go.

Cleaning the sand off the driveway, washing the cars, cleaning up a billion pine cones, straightening out the garage and playing with the grandkids — it was an all-around glorious day. In fact, just thinking about the upcoming nice weather that’s nearly here makes some of the more difficult spring tasks fly by.

Even after 60-some years on this earth, I can still remember the excitement of the changing season as a young child.

It never seems to get old, and only better as the seasons come back around faster and faster through the years.

It’s odd, but when you’re in the middle of a season, it feels like it will last forever but once it changes you wonder how it slipped by so fast.

While I appreciate all four seasons here in northern New York, I must confess I could do with a little less winter. Not so much the snow, but certainly the ice and the frigid cold, especially as I get older.

As the warmer weather sets in, the opportunity to get around and enjoy the outdoors without keeping an eye on the advanced weather forecast keeps life simple and on schedule without surprise or unexpected crises that always seem to arise during the winter months.

I know we live in a winter wonderland, but the economy up here seems to kick into gear once the days get longer and mother-earth gets closer to the sun. The region comes alive with more traffic, and the return of our southern snow-birds after seeking the warmer climate for a few months.

Winter is an important season, and I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for spring, summer and fall. ■

It’s a midterm election year.

As the weather warms along with the political calendar, it’s time for us to get on our high horse and tout the benefits of civic engagement.

While all the focus is on state and national politics, it’s shaping up to be a sleepy year at the local level.

Clinton County Sheriff David Favro is running unopposed.

Essex County Sheriff Richard Cutting is retiring at the end of this year. Two candidates were in the running to succeed him, but one dropped out last week after the Essex County Republican Committee endorsed the other, leaving the race uncontested.

Warren County has just two county coroner positions up for election.

In fact, the dearth of candidates at the local level is more of the norm than the exception.

While candidates and party brass are undoubtedly breathing a sigh of relief at what may appear to be an effortless glide to November, the voters are the ones who ultimately lose when races go uncontested.

The lack of subsequent debate and discussion is a disservice to the community.

House GOP eying balanced budget — but only after increasing the deficit

To the Editor: Th e House of Representatives has just endeavored to save its reputation as the party of fiscal responsibility by trying to pass a bill calling for a balanced federal budget.

This effort was supported by Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro), among others, but did not pass the Republican-controlled House.

Why now?

Why didn’t the Republican Congress worry about deficits before it passed a $1.5 trillion tax-cut package last December?

Why were deficits not a concern when Congress passed a $1.3 trillion budget in March? These bills that blow up the deficit were signed into law by a Republican president.

Now, suddenly, the very people who voted to increase deficits and the debt in a big way get religion about deficits after taking actions to increase them.

Kids are leading the discussion. Shouldn’t they be joined by officials in a public setting?

Competitive sheriff ’s races across the North Country would foster a sense of discourse that so many are aching to have at the local level.

Just ask Rep. Elise Stefanik, who has been in the hotseat for her stance on gun control, with constituents pleading with the lawmaker to do more to combat the rash of violence.

Or Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is fending off challenges from both his right and left flanks.

Speaking of Stefanik: While the secondterm lawmaker acknowledges re-applying for her job every two years is part of the solemn duties of Congress, we can’t imagine she’d be

Speaker Paul Ryan and others have made no secret of their intention to use growing deficits as an excuse for slashing programs like Social Security and Medicare.

If a Republican Congress is elected in November, it will lose no time cutting these programs, which working people need in retirement. That $1.50 per week cut in taxes that Mr. Ryan tweeted about on Feb. 3 while praising the tax bill won’t amount to much in the face of deep cuts in Social Security and Medicare.

terribly disappointed if she ran unopposed.

But from now until June, expect the crowd of Democrats to pummel the lawmaker as they seek to run against her in this November’s general election.

Republicans are lashing the f ield as “divided and in disarray.”

It’s an attack that needles Democrats, we suspect largely because they still haven’t fully regrouped after their biting 2016 losses and are still trying to figure out where to go as a party.

While a slugfest is necessary — and is entertaining to watch — what the GOP probably should acknowledge is that the unruly field is generating a valuable discussion of the issues.

It’s nice to see so many people engaged in the political process, discussing with a remarkable degree of fluency concerns from across the ideological spectrum, from the cost of prescription drugs to environmental safeguards.

Despite wherever you stand from a political standpoint, this discourse is the foundation of our civil society, and makes us all the smarter, more educated and informed as a result — even if it is messy.

maddening — fluctuating temperatures rocked our region all winter long, with periods of 50 and 60-degree weather wreaking havoc on the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Ice Palace back in February (luckily, not until after the carnival itself had ended).

My local volunteer fire department was deployed to the Hogansburg area during that warm period. A lot of homes were flooded by an ice jam on the river. Our volunteers were there for about a week trying to help. It’s the instability that’s wreaking havoc, and it’s alarming to say the least.

With that said, I am glad to see that climate change is a hot topic among the New York 21st Congressional District’s Democratic candidates.

It seems that all of them are on board with fighting climate change and considering that one of them will hopefully unseat Rep. Elise Stefanik, we should expect no less.

In a time when the EPA is being systematically dismantled, we need a strong debate among Democratic contenders for how to adequately address climate change and care for our precious environment.

Let’s hope that we can turn this scenario around for the better and invest in renewable energies for our future.

Plattsburgh garden plots still available

PLATTSBURGH | With the season just beginning, there are still a few plots available at the two Plattsburgh Community Garden sites.

The garden group operates a 60-plot garden in Melissa L. Penfield Park and a 14-plot garden at the Plattsburgh Housing Authority on South Catherine Street.

Rouses Point opens resident utility pre-pay

ROUSES POINT | Starting on June 1, the Village of Rouses Point Municipal Electric Department will again allow residential customers with a two-year clear record to pay their electric charges by a budget billing arrangement. Based on previous years’ usage and a projected per-kilowatt hour cost, including supplemental power charge, a customer’s annual electric expense will be estimated and then paid in 11 payments. With New York already in a dire financial condition, the last thing we need is another spending idea. It is not an honor to be the number one tax state out of 50 states.

Here in Hamilton County, “early voting” would require the purchase of at least one additional voting machine at a cost of $11,000 and then securing trained personnel to man the poll site for at least 13 days.

The voting machine site would need to be manned, bi-partisan, eight hours per day weekdays and five hours on Saturday, Sunday and legal holidays.

This labor cost would exceed another $7,000. All this and then residents in some parts of Hamilton County would still have to commute close to an hour just to reach the polling location.

And then there is the cost of all the required legal advertising. All this cost for a county with under 5,000 residents.

How much will it cost statewide?

We already have a mechanism to allow “early voting” — it is called “absentee ballot.”

Just contact the Board of Elections office in Lake Pleasant and ask them to mail you the absentee ballot application. For the cost of a stamp all of the time, energy and additional tax dollars can be avoided.

If Trump fires Mueller, we’re ready to hit the streets

To the Editor: We are so fortunate to live in this democracy, where we are free to voice our opinions without fear of a knock on the door in the middle of the night.

We can hold peaceful public rallies for or against government actions or inactions without fear of facing riot police.

We can walk our talk when we decide it’s necessary. And if President Trump does anything to obstruct the completion of the Mueller investigation, it is our right and duty as freedom-loving citizens to send a strong message to Washington that obstruction of justice is as unacceptable for a President as it is for any American.

To that end, many individuals and organizations around the country are working to coordinate timely rallies in the event the president, despite statements to the contrary, commits some act to interrupt the investigation.

There are many rallies planned regionally (including Plattsburgh, Glens Falls, Canton, Saratoga Springs, Watertown, and Burlington) and now there will be one in Saranac Lake for those interested.

Peru man arrested for DWI Plattsburgh dispute leads to arrest

PLATTSBURGH | After responding to a reported domestic incident in the Town of Plattsburgh on April 17, Clinton County sheriff’s deputies arrested Jarod Ball, 20, of Plattsburgh, on charges of harassment; criminal obstruction of breathing/blood circulation; unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child.

Further investigation revealed that Ball engaged in a physical altercation with the female victim and another male individual. New York State Police Troopers assisted

the “red lines” that would activate rallies across the country.

To be clear, we hope that such gatherings would not be necessary. We sincerely hope the president will allow the completion of the investigation. If there was no collusion with the Russian government as the White House frequently asserts, then a completed investigation will prove so, erasing all doubt and giving the president much more public support and credibility.

Baffled by Elizabethtown intersection solution

To the Editor: I am 100 percent baffled by the proposed solution to the Elizabethtown traffic pattern.

I cannot imagine anything more annoying or dangerous to motorists than a four-way stop at the current blinker light intersection.

Even a bona fide traffic light has real issues due to “the hill” situation that is unique to this intersection. A four-way stop will do nothing to make that intersection safer, especially in slippery conditions.

I can just imagine the winter chain-reaction crashes on that hill as the lead car tries to come to a full stop.

I agree with another writer who says that the best solution is the current blinker light that gives the hillside motorists the right of way.

If necessary, put up new signage for the blinker light, but I cannot understand the thinking that a confusing four-way stop will solve any problems whatsoever. Please don’t even consider making this dangerous mistake.

To the Editor: Bravo to the Vermont sportsmen for standing up to a corrupt government that is violating their Second Amendment.

Time for New York state sportsmen to do the same here. Fifty-two counties are not wrong!

To the Editor: Many kudos to Sue S. Reaser from Westport for thanking Dr. Savel for his great service, particularly at the former VA offices in Elizabethtown in the 1970s. A doctor without peers.

I am only one veteran who will never forget Dr. Savel. I also shared his reverence to those Holocaust children.

PERU | On April 21 at 11 p.m., Clinton County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a report of a truck in the ditch at the intersection of Calkins Road and River Road in the Town of Peru.

A short time later, deputies were advised that the truck had left the scene. Deputies located the truck on Allen Hill Road and determined that the operator, Bryan G. Frary, of Peru, was allegedly operating the vehicle while in an intoxicated condition.

Frary, 38, was processed at the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, following which he was released after being issued appearance tickets. He is set to appear in Peru Town Court in May for arraignment. ■

Throughout my time in Congress, I have worked to deliver bipartisan results to improve North Country healthcare.

I was proud to lead the legislative effort to reauthorize funding for Community Health Centers that support over 95,000 patients in our district, and I worked to pass a 10-year authorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program that supports over 21,000 vulnerable children across the North Country.

These were major bipartisan victories and results that will have an immediate, significant impact on our district.

At my recent town halls in South Glens Falls and Moriah, one issue raised by constituents was the high cost of prescription drugs.

North Country families continue to struggle with expensive prescription drugs, and in fact, one in four people across the country have reported difficulty affording their medications.

In his State of the Union address in January, President Trump said addressing prescription drug costs is one of his highest priorities, and he is preparing a major speech on the issue later this week.

I wanted to take this opportunity to address constituents with the details on my efforts in Congress to tackle high prescription drug costs.

One of the major obstacles to accessing affordable drugs is a slow approval process at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

On average, it takes about 12 years for an experimental drug to move from the laboratory to your local pharmacy. Last Congress, I was pleased to support the 21st Century Cures Act that was signed into law. This legislation made many reforms to our healthcare system, including streamlining our FDA approval process so that patients can receive affordable, generic treatments in a timelier manner.

Additionally, it increases accessibility to clinical trials and improves the FDA’s ability to hire scientific experts.

We also must address the tremendous costs associated with research and development (R&D).

One way to help reduce R&D costs is by supporting this innovation at the

federal level so these costs are not borne by the drug manufacturers, and thus passed down to consumers.

Since I arrived in Congress, I have consistently voted and advocated in support of increased funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the world’s premier institute for medical and public health research.

In fact, in the last government funding bill, I supported a $3 billion spending increase, bringing NIH’s total budget for 2018 up to $37 billion.

In rural districts like ours, the 340B program is another important component of reducing prescription drug costs. The 340B program allows drug manufacturers participating in Medicaid to help safety-net hospitals and community health centers provide their patients with 25 to 50 percent discounts on medicines and other life-saving services. This drug pricing program enables vulnerable and uninsured patients to access prescription drugs and other treatments that they otherwise would not be able to afford.

I am an outspoken supporter of this program and have cosponsored legislation (H.R. 4392) that would fight back against proposed cuts to certain drugs that are covered under the 340B program.

I have also cosponsored legislation, the Prescription Drug Price Transparency Act, which imposes greater transparency standards on pharmacy benefit managers to ensure that drug pricing information is better passed along to consumers and incentivizes pharmacists to promote more affordable, generic drugs.

In addition, I recently cosponsored the Prescription Transparency Act, which protects a patient’s right to know about lower-cost drugs when visiting their local pharmacies.

Currently, pharmacy benefit managers can include “gag clauses” in contracts preventing pharmacists from alerting consumers at the counter when there is a medication available that may be cheaper if they pay for it out-of-pocket. This bill prohibits the use of “gag clauses,” which I believe can lower costs for many constituents.

There is still much more work to do to bring down the costs of prescription drugs for families in our district.

As President Trump details his ideas and plans to address this important issue, I will be listening intently and look forward to continuing to lead on this issue in Congress. ■ — Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro) represents New York’s 21st Congressional District

Chazy Central Rural School District

Total appropriations: $10,728,470 Tax rate per $1,000 in assessed value: The estimated tax rate for 2018-19 is $21.68. That amounts to a 3 percent increase over the current rate of $20.98.

Estimated increase on a $100,000 home: $70, without the STAR exemption.

Total tax levy: $4,813,713 Meets the cap? The Chazy Central Rural School District is over the cap.

Fund balance usage: $702,500 School board elections: Two vacant school board seats are up for election, both four-year terms. Craig Giroux and Jason Bruce are both incumbents who are running unopposed for the seats. Kristin McAuliffe is running unopposed for a seat on the Chazy Public Library Board of Directors.

Vote: CCRS Auditorium, May 15 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Ballot propositions: One proposition allocating $37,500 to the Chazy Public Library; one proposition to grant the Alice T. Miner Colonial Collection a non-exclusive land easement. ■

Second facility for credit union scheduled for October opening

AU SABLE FORKS | For Maggie Pope, it was a dream come true to bring a credit union to her hometown.

“This is my hometown and we are going to make this great,” said Pope at the groundbreaking ceremony for Peru Federal Credit Union’s second branch location April 11,

with construction starting the next day.

“We are expecting to be open by Oct. 1,” said Pope, a PFCU manager. “The staff and the Town of Black Brook have been amazing.

I expect a very smooth project with the help of all the people who are contributing to making this work.”

Pope said the new branch office will lead to the addition of between 2-3 jobs between both Au Sable Forks and Peru, where the original branch is located.

“On behalf of the town, we would like to officially welcome Peru Federal Credit Union to our community,” said Black Brook Supervisor Jon Douglass. “You have done a lot of things for the town before you came here and I can’t wait to see what you will do once you are here.” ■

County officials have touted the service as one necessary for regional economic development.

“The addition of this service presents a tremendous opportunity for the community,” said Clinton County Chairman Harry McManus in a statement.

New York state has invested $38 million into the facility for flightline, concession and

infrastructure improvements, as well as U.S. Customs Facility designed to expedite future international flights, among other renovations.

Federal funding has allowed for runway improvements.

“We do have a build an airport before they will come, but there has always been serious interest and it will happen,” North Country Chamber of Commerce President Garry Douglas told The Sun earlier this month.

Lake Placid will host the World University Games in 2023 and stakeholders said the improvements were critical to securing the bid.

PBG will serve as the main mode of transport for thousands of athletes and spectators, shuttling to events in Essex County.

Douglas also touted the benefits to regional employers, colleges and universities, and the Lake Placid area, a global tourism hotspot.

Also in the works at PBG are new hangers and rehabbed industrial space for future aerospace and manufacturing tenants.

CLASS D

Dylan Trombley, Moriah: Co-Player of the Year A senior, this is Dylan’s second year being named as a tandem best player in the state by the sportswriter’s association.

Trombley averaged 22.3 points per game in leading the Vikings to their third straight Class D championship game and fifth straight final four appearance.

For his career, Trombley compiled 99-4 career record as a Viking, bringing the first state championship to Section VII since 1930 (Mineville). He totaled 1,412 career points (123 three-pointers), 486 rebounds, 460 assists and 179 steals Joey Stahl, Moriah: First team The Moriah senior was recognized as one of the seven best players in the state for Class D, helping the team reach the Class D championship game of the third straight year. With a career record of 99-4, Stahl finished with 1,195 career points (193 three-pointers), 479 rebounds, 298 assists and 165 steals. Stahl averaged 17.1 points per game this season.

Jay Streible, Moriah: Sixth team The third starting senior on the state finalist team, Streible averaged 6.9 points per game this season, but was a key contributor in many of the Vikings key wins during their run to three straight championship games.

Streible compiled a 76-3 record in his career, with 377 points, 257 rebounds and 75 assists.

bley. Graney averaged 19.9 points per game this season and in a year where six boy’s players made the 1,000-point scoring list, Graney led them all with 1,415, the most since Adam Jaquish in 2016 and good enough for 13th on the Section VII all-time list.

The team went 53-34 with Graney, with their only losses over the past two season coming to teams that were in the finals both years in Moriah (Class D) and Lake George (Class C).

Joel Martineau, AuSable Valley: Eighth team The Patriot senior guard was one of the last members (Dalton McDonald) of the 2015-16 Class C final four team. Martineau averaged 23.9 points per game and finished with 115 three pointers, 332 rebounds and 130 assists. The team compiled a 39-26 record with Martineau as a member.

Brett Juntunen, Northern Adirondack: Ninth team In his junior season, Juntunen averaged 17.1 points per game in helping lead the Bobcats to another Class C sectional final.

In two varsity years, Juntunen helped the team to a 28-16 record.

Honorable mention: Colton Huestis (Ticonderoga), Cody Peryea (NAC), Neil Yang (Seton Catholic).

Bennett named Athletic Director of the Year Saranac Lake A.D. honored with state award

SARANAC LAKE | The head of Red Storm athletics has been honored by the New York State Athletic Administrator’s Association as the Outstanding Athletic Administrator in Chapter 7.

Eric Bennett, who also serves as the head coach of the Saranac Lake varsity football team, was honored by the NYSAA at their annual conference awards banquet held in Saratoga last month.

Bennett is in his fourth year as A.D. “It’s always an honor to be recognized by one’s peers,” said Bennett. “The Section VII athletic directors are an incredibly hardwork-

ing group and it’s a privilege to interact with them on what amounts to a daily basis.”

Bennett said his goal is to make sure the students of Saranac Lake, along with teams throughout the section, receive a positive experience as student-athletes.

“Sports did so much for me throughout my life and I appreciate the opportunity to facilitate the same for our kids,” he said.

“Eric is insightful and observant within the CVAC and Section VII,” said Matt Walentuk, Section VII Director and NYSAAA Chapter representative. “Eric has played an integral role in helping to push for the use of online scheduling and helped navigate Section VII towards improved communication through the use of specific software.”

Josh Harrica, CVAC president, recalled Bennett as an active champion both within Section VII and his own school district.

“Serving as the head football coach and athletic director, Eric is a role model to student athletes and has been an outstanding col-

league to fellow athletic directors throughout Section VII,” Harrica said. “Eric understands the value of athletics in education and wants to ensure that the student athletes have a positive experience.”

As athletic director at Saranac Lake, Bennett has brought the sport of unified basketball to the school (their first home game is April 23); helped structure a successful girl’s hockey merger with Lake Placid, and worked to allow student-athletes the ability to compete in two sports in the same season.

Bennett has also served as the NYSAAA Assistant Chapter 7 Representative since 2016.

Prior to becoming athletic director, Bennett coached high school football since 2003 and been head varsity coach since 2010. In 2012, he was named CVAC football coach of the year. ■

PLATTSBURGH | An article entitled “City police officer named ‘Hometown Hero,’” which ran in April 21 edition of The Sun, incorrectly stated that Willis Tromblee had won the EMS Provider of the Year Award, and Conrad LaVarnway won the Firefighter of the Year Award.

The error stemmed from an official news release that incorrectly listed LaVarnway and Tromblee as the winners of those awards.

Grassroots group presses candidates on environmental issues

Stefanik, Ratigan failed to respond to Change Through Action survey

PLATTSBURGH |Ahead of Earth Day, grassroots progressive group Change Through Action (CTA) sent candidates running for New York’s 21st Congressional District questionnaires asking about them their “top two environmental concerns and proposed solutions.”

Rep. Elise Stefanik’s office did not respond.

But neither did Dylan Ratigan, the only Democratic candidate out of a field of seven who failed to do so.

CTA, which organized the People’s Forum at SUNY Plattsburgh in February, made infographics of each candidate’s response and disseminated them on social media on Sunday.

Printouts of the responses also ringed a booth manned by the Plattsburgh chapter of 350.org at the Discover Service and Earth Day Festival at the City Recreation Center in Plattsburgh on Sunday morning.

Each candidate was paired with an insect or a nature-related image.

Ratigan was given a snail.

“Candidate did not respond,” said the placard.

“We’d like to know what his environmental views are,” said Patty Blanchard, a 350. org co-chair.

Ratigan was first emailed on April 4, according to CTA.

“As of over two weeks later (April 21), no response or acknowledgment of the inquiry was received. We would encourage constituents to inquire directly with Ratigan via his publicly posted campaign email as we were unable to gather the information.”

A Ratigan campaign spokesman told The Sun the email “didn’t get into the appropriate hands” and the candidate regrets missing the opportunity.

“I left my career five years ago and invested my savings in Helical Outpost and my platform advocates 100 percent renewables,” said Ratigan. “Happy Earth Day!” His campaign website has a list of issues but “environment” is not among them.

Seven Democrats are seeking the nomination to run against Stefanik, a Republican, in November.

A primary will be held June 26.

Joining Ratigan, a former MSNBC host, in seeking the seat are Don Boyajian, Tedra Cobb, Emily Martz, David Mastrianni, Patrick Nelson and Katie Wilson.

Green Party candidate Lynn Kahn is also running.

The candidates who did complete the questionnaire issued a dynamic range of responses, from reducing the use of fossil fuels (Nelson, Cobb), combating acid rain (Mastrianni, Boyajian), addressing climate change and invasive species (Martz), fixing broken water infrastructure (Kahn) and investing in clean energy infrastructure (Wilson).

Both Cobb and Martz attended the event and spent the morning chatting with exhibitors and participants.

Cobb appeared delighted at her icon, which appeared to be a type of pod — or perhaps a hemlock cone, she posited later on social media.

Change Through Action, a Plattsburgh-based grassroots group, reached out to each candidate in New York’s 21st Congressional District to solicit their views on the environment.

Stefanik was awarded a spider by the group.

Asked about the questionnaire, a spokesman said: “Congresswoman Stefanik is a recognized leader in Congress on environmental issues.”

Stefanik has the highest score of any New York Republican, according to the League of Conservation voters, and is the author of the Republican Climate Resolution.

The second-term lawmaker is also a member of the Bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus and she is co-chair of the bipartisan Invasive Species Caucus, “in addition to countless individual environmental issues and policy areas she has championed,” said the spokesman.

“Each year on Earth Day, we are reminded of the importance of being good stewards of our environment so that future generations can continue to enjoy Earth’s natural splen-

dor,” Stefanik said in a statement.

The lawmaker highlighted her work to protect funding for acid rain research and clean water efforts, among other measures.

“As the co-chair of the Invasive Species Caucus and a Member of the Bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus, I will continue to be a leading voice in Congress on environmental issues.”

CTA has not formally endorsed a candidate, but members are free to support whoever they choose, said a spokesperson.
