Hundreds march in Plattsburgh Locals turn out for “March for Our Lives”

PLATTSBURGH | Over 150 people marched in Plattsburgh last Saturday to show their support for victims of the recent mass-shooting in Parkland, Florida and call for stricter gun control measures.

The event, which saw protesters march from SUNY Plattsburgh to Trinity Park, was a local installment of the March for Our Lives, a nationwide rally against gun violence led by students who survived the recent shooting at a Florida high school.

Ian Campbell, a 16-year-old Plattsburgh High School student, said that the march was a way to show their perspective and ensure that a mass shooting doesn’t happen again.

“The reality is that this can happen anywhere,” he said.

“We’re in school every day. All day. We have to feel safe there. That has to be a priority.”

ELLENBURG | As the dairy industry continues to be mired in crisis, local students are offering a lifeline to area farmers.

With help from the Future Farmers of America Alumni of Northern Adirondack Central School District, students are compiling food baskets in time for Easter Sunday.

Students have compiled enough items for 50 baskets so far, and will begin packing them on Wednesday.

The group will fan out on Thursday to make the drops, including locations in Chazy Lake, Churubusco, Altona, Ellenburg and Standish.

Nationwide, the dairy industry is in a sustained downswing owing to an increased interest in milk alternatives paired with strong production.

But low milk prices have been magnified in New York, the third largest milk-producing state, where dairy sales constitute about half of total farm sales annually.

“We have around 45 dairy farmers in our school district,” said Karen LaBombard, an agricultural teacher at Northern Adirondack who is aiding in the effort. “It hits home to a lot of these kids.”

The price per hundredweight reached as high as $25 in 2014, but the price has plummeted to nearly half that.

“Prices are around $14 per hundredweight, and projected to fall lower than that,” Gilmore said.

“A lot of times, farmers are having a hard time to feed their families because there’s no money.”

SUNY Plattsburgh’s cheerleading team is a serious, highly-competitive troupe, who in the past have brought home multiple first place titles from various competitions.

“This team has worked so hard in the last

six months and they have so much potential,” said the team’s current coach, Megan Gardiner. “Each girl on that mat gives 100 percent to cheerleading and they deserve to have that nationals experience.”

Gardiner said it’s difficult to pay for competitions, and raising money ahead of time will allow her team to focus on practicing for performances.

PLATTSBURGH | Patrick Nelson sat at a downtown Plattsburgh cafe last week surrounded by stacks of paperwork, clipboards and campaign literature.

The candidate seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination for New York’s 21st Congressional District has just three weeks to collect 1,250 signatures to get on the ballot.

Ray Bazydlo was among the clutch of volunteers suiting up for another day hitting the streets in an effort to wrangle in local support.

“A lot of people aren’t too informed as I’d like that we’re having a primary,” said Bazydlo, who had been out for four days straight collecting signatures in Westport, Essex, Elizabethtown and now, Plattsburgh.

“But I must say everyone is extremely receptive to signing our petition.”

Nelson went through logistical details with Bazydlo, who lives in Essex, before he zipped up his coat and took off into the frigid afternoon landscape.

Nelson followed close behind.

But the district has lots of mixed households, said Nelson, a 28-year-old political activist from Stillwater in Saratoga County.

“A more open process would be good,” he mused.

Nelson jumped into a well-worn SUV plastered with bumper stickers blasting the incumbent, Rep. Elise Stefanik, a Republican who is seeking a third term.

Going out to collect signatures during the days can be slim pickings, he said.

Nelson parked on Bailey Avenue and hopped out, scanning maps compiled using NationBuilder, a community action platform, with a campaign aide.

“If folks are home, they’re usually not in the best of moods to talk to someone who knocks on their door,” said Nelson.

Rouses Point elects new mayor Thomas Batha wins top slot, two village trustees re-elected

ROUSES POINT | A village trustee will take the place of Dan Latourneau as mayor of Rouses Point.

Village Trustee Thomas Batha was elected as the new Rouses Point mayor during last week’s village elections. He garnered 186 votes in an uncontested race and will take office April 2 for a two-year term.

Latourneau declined to run for re-election and did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Batha is a long-standing public official, serving as village trustee for three terms over two decades ago and again this past year; as village mayor for two terms in the 1990s, and as a member of the local plan-

ning board for eight years.

“I was budget officer for nine years,” Batha told The Sun. “We ran things very efficiently, and we’re trying to get it back to being run that way.”

The imminent departure of Pfizer, a large pharmaceutical plant, is expected to throw a wrench into the village’s budget planning.

“We’re restructuring the village to accommodate the loss of the Pfizer plant and the revenue stream from that,” he said. “We’re trying to get the village prepared for that before it happens and make the impact as least-jolting as we can.”

Pfizer was expected to begin decommissioning the plant this year.

Batha said that planning for the closure of Pfizer has been “long neglected,” and he would begin remedying that when taking office April 2.

Village trustees Benjamin Arno and Thomas Dart beat out challenger John Cooper and successfully won re-election campaigns, garnering 201 and 166 votes respectively to Cooper’s 100. ■

As low milk prices continue to devastate the state’s dairy farming communities, students from Northern Adirondack are pitching in to ensure local farmers have enough to eat on Easter Sunday.

State and federal officials have offered a flurry of solutions to stave off the bleeding, including U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who has introduced legislation that would create a new “price floor” for milk that would help the state’s dairy farmers continue operating while milk prices are historically low.

LaBombard, a dairy farmer herself, said the kids are dialed into the situation.

“They know themselves if something doesn’t change in the dairy industry, these farms will be closing,” she said.

A roundtable discussion with area farmers and lawmakers is scheduled for April 4 at noon at the Rainbow Banquet Hall in Altona to discuss the ongoing issue. ■

Clinton County ranks in middle of pack with statewide health rankings Culling smoking a key priority, say local health officials

PLATTSBURGH | Clinton County ranks square in the middle of the pack when it comes to the health of its residents.

The release of the 2018 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps earlier this month by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation places Clinton County at No. 34 out of 62 counties for health outcomes, including length and quality of life.

The report, a collaborative project with the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, utilizes several metrics to gauge community health, including obesity and access to healthy food.

Influencing these outcomes are factors like poverty, education and opportunities to be physically active.

On many metrics, Clinton County clocks in below the bell curve, including quality of life (No. 40), health behaviors (No. 54) and health factors (No. 42).

The ranking has remained fairly consistent over a fiveyear period, between Nos. 29 and 37.

Twenty-one percent of county residents smoke compared to 14 percent statewide and at the national level.

Clinton County Public Health (CCPH) is working within Clinton County and with regional partners to address access to tobacco products as well as to promote cessation services, said Karen Derusha, supervising public health educator with CCPH. “The data shows us that, in the area of health behaviors, reducing tobacco should still be a priority for Clinton County — and it is a priority,” Derusha told The Sun. Thirty percent of county residents are obese — slightly higher than the state and national average — while sexually transmitted infections clock in at 411.6 per 100,000 people — a whopping four times higher than that of Essex County (but not as high as the statewide average of 524.7).

While lower than the state rate, and the national level for this diagnosis, this is an area where Clinton County can improve, Derusha said.

The rankings are based upon chlamydia rates, she noted, and the county’s communicable disease team is continually working to drive down that rate alongside other STIs. Clinton County also ranks slightly higher than the state average when it comes to excessive drinking, with a 23 percent occurrence rate (compared to 19 percent statewide).

Teen births clock in about average, with an occurance rate of 16 percent compared to 18 percent statewide.

Derusha pointed out CCHD views the rankings as just one of a number of tools from which to draw information about local health outcomes.

“The rankings confirm the findings of our Community Health Assessment and direction of our collaborative community health planning,” Derusha said.

When it comes to tackling obesity and promoting better lifestyles, CCHD is working to improve access to healthy and affordable foods and access to opportunities for physical activity through a variety of projects.

“These are identified in the Clinton County’s Community Health Improvement Plan along with efforts focused around mental, emotional and behavioral health, an indicator area where Clinton County ranks below New York state,” Derusha said.

Elsewhere in the region, Essex County scored No. 15.

Hamilton County moved up 30 spaces over last year to No. 29.

Saratoga County clocked in at No. 2, dropping one position from the top slot in 2017.

Warren County remains ranked at No. 10; Washington saw a four point uptick to No. 27, and Franklin County also moved up four places to clock in at No. 42.

Bronx County was the least fit.

Stefanik talks trade, NAFTA negotiations in Ottawa trip Lawmaker also warned Trump over tariffs

PLATTSBURGH | Tariffs and the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement were the chief issues Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro) sought to bring to the table in Ottawa, Ontario on Monday in trade talks between Canadian officials and U.S. business leaders.

“The first priority was to make sure Ambassador (Kelly Craft) understands the importance of the region when it comes to the U.S.-Canada partnership,” Stefanik told The Sun in a phone interview on Monday.

That partnership has been shaky recently as the two neighbors have sparred over a variety of trade issues, including newsprint prices, dairy exports and President Donald Trump’s oft-repeated threat to terminate the NAFTA agreement.

Stefanik, a member of the Northern Border Caucus, characterized the mood of Canadian officials as “cautiously optimistic,” particularly since Canada has been excluded from the tariffs on aluminum and steel exports that went into effect last week.

“Tariffs are taxes and increase the costs of goods and will have consequences when it comes to jobs,” Stefanik said. “Tariffs have significant implications.”

Those efforts will be reassessed after May 1, according to the White House.

The second-term lawmaker said she re-

peatedly underscored the importance of the bilateral relationship during the session and the impacts on the North Country economy.

The North Country Chamber of Commerce (NCCC) estimates 15 percent of the Clinton County workforce is employed by a Canadian or border-related employer.

Numerous Canadian companies have established a presence in Plattsburgh, including Bombardier, B3CG and Novabus.

Stefanik invited Craft to Plattsburgh, where the new ambassador will hopefully see the “significant economic benefits and thousands of jobs created as a result of the partnership with Canada.”

The lawmaker also said she’ll continue to be a strong advocate for the use of Congressional authority to play a role in shaping trade

agreements, and indicated she’ll push back hard against any effort by the White House to terminate the 24-year old agreement.

The focus should instead be on combating China, she said.

“Hopefully we don’t get to that point and can focus on modernizing the trade agreement between those three countries,” Stefanik said, “and how we can strengthen (NAFTA) and not throw the baby out with the bathwater.”

The lawmaker was also part of a delegation of 25 lawmakers from border districts who met with Trump recently to talk trade issues.

Stefanik said she warned the president of the consequences of upending that agreement.

“He actively listened,” Stefanik said. “He has strong views when it comes to trade and is a tough negotiator.” ■

Plattsburgh preps for ‘Big Read’ College, libraries collaborate on community-wide reading program

PLATTSBURGH | Local book lovers are ramping up for the first-ever Plattsburgh Big Read next month.

Over 25 events have been scheduled throughout April to coincide with the Plattsburgh Big Read, a month-long community reading program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Events include a Akwesasne Mohawk Festival at Plattsburgh High School on April 7, a screening of “The Seventh Fire” at the Strand Center Theatre on April 11 and a storytelling session at SUNY Plattsburgh on April 20.

“Reading a book together is a chance to explore a story, a world, together,” said

Sarah Spanburgh, a librarian at Plattsburgh Public Library, in a statement. “The Big Read is a way for an entire community to share that experience.”

The novel of choice is “The Round House”

by Louise Erdrich, a story about a 13-yearold’s push for justice after his Native American mother is raped near a sacred round house on reservation land.

The book is set in North Dakota but it has some parallels to this community, according to CCE Director Julia Devine, from the climate to the rural lifestyle and connections to the nearby Akwesasne Mohawk territory.

“This festival acknowledges the traditional Native inhabitants of our region,” Devine said in a statement. Devine said that she worked closely with the Akwesasne Mohawk community when planning next month’s Big Read.

“It has been a profound experience for me,” she said. “Increasing Plattsburgh’s awareness of its Native American roots will help open its heart to peace and compassion.”

A limited number of free books will be available at SUNY Plattsburgh’s Feinberg Library, Plattsburgh Public Library (PPL) and the Akwesasne Library and Cultural Center,

according to a news release from the CCE. PPL has family bundles available featuring both Erdrich’s “Round House” and kidfriendly novels, according to PPL Director Anne de la Chapelle, and residents are encouraged to “read, share and return” so others will get a shot at reading the book.

“The library is thrilled to be a partner,” said Spanburgh.

Hosted by SUNY Plattsburgh’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE), the Plattsburgh Big Read was funded nearly one year ago by a $13,500 National Endowment for the Arts grant.

CCC JOINS IN

Clinton Community College is also participating in the Plattsburgh Big Read.

The college is hosting an art and writing competition, the winners vying for a spot in “The Cliffhanger,” the school’s creative arts magazine.

Organizers sought “thematic expressions” of Erdrich’s “Round House,” including stories, poetry, photography and artwork that take inspiration from the novel to put a spotlight on sexual assault, family healing and

native culture.

The unveiling of the winners is expected to take place at a creative arts celebration on April 24 on campus.

LAST PROJECT

SUNY Plattsburgh’s CCE is being put on hold at the end of the semester, a closure that is expected to save the state university over $50,000.

A projected three-year decline in enrollment, paired with declining state aid and contractual salary increases, has contributed to a structural deficit at the college of around $8.4 million, according to the school’s 2017-18 budget.

In response, the school is looking to make $300,000 worth of cuts this academic year, followed by $200,000 next year, according to the university’s budget.

Devine said that she hopes the Big Read can bring together both the campus community and surrounding residents.

“I hope this festival can help heal and bring the community together in a new way.

As my last project as the coordinator of the CCE, it’s a very meaningful one.” ■

uate and non-traditional students in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton and Warren counties.

Grants are approved by the Crary Foundation’s board based on recommendations of selection committees at each of the 40 area schools Crary serves.

Scholarship grants in a range of $600 to $1,000 are made to students based on academic qualification and financial need.

The award is renewable for each of four years of undergraduate study.

Time to get serious

The $1.3 trillion budget passed last week is expected to push our national debt to over $22 trillion,

Since 2007, the country has found itself held captive by feuding political gridlock. Nowhere in our history have we consistently seen this much-mismanaged legislation.

Instead of working on a realistic budget, both sides claim to be held hostage to giving up a lot just to get a little.

It’s long past time to remove the safety net that allows Congress to pass last-minute legislation none have read, and no one knows for sure what’s in it.

If the voters expect to see stronger Congressional management of this nation’s spending, then we better get serious about it pretty darn quick.

We must demand that the Senate return to a majority rule vote to send legislation to the president’s desk and not regularly stalled without 60 members in favor.

We need the line item veto, allowed by many states which provide the elected executive a final opportunity to reject certain aspects of legislation deemed objectionable before signing into law. The president must be the adult in the room who is capable of doing more than thumbs up or down.

Votes in favor or opposed as well as presidential vetoes will have significant consequences.

Without placing true accountability on lawmaker’s shoulders, they will continue to spend us into oblivion, all to satisfy political partisanship and not the country as a whole.

We’ve allowed them to divide into opposing sides. We end that charade by becoming independent thinkers and no longer allowing the parties to play us against each other.

Winning or losing will now matter greatly.

The result should be passing good legislation that best serves the country and earn the faith we’ve placed in them.

Congress will return to seeking solutions instead of playing cat and mouse. The Senate will be forced to take action on legislation passed by Congress, and neither party can play spoiler unless they have the majority of the country behind them.

As voters we must vote for the person who we believe can perform as promised regardless of party.

Individual votes on ill-conceived legislation will have serious consequence for those who passed it.

Republicans and Democrats will be required to vote independently of the traditional party lines, and votes will have significant meaning without the filibuster option to hide behind. ■

Facebook should be raked over coals for data breach — but users should also be held accountable We used to get an endorphin rush from watching likes, follows and shares stream in on social media.

We’re old enough to remember when Facebook was used solely as a way to connect with friends and family.

But now it’s an all-encompassing nightmare that undermines our democratic ideals, cheapens public discourse and violates our privacy.

The latest breach of trust is the emerging Facebook/Cambridge Analytica scandal.

At least 50 million users had their data exposed to an outside researcher ostensibly to gather information on character traits via personality quizzes taken by a smaller subset of users.

But the researcher gave that data to a firm called Cambridge Analytica, a company hired by President Donald Trump’s election campaign, who then used the information to try to influence the 2016 election.

The largest data breach in the company’s history is just the latest black eye for a tech giant already in the crosshairs as a chief conduit in spreading fake news and Russian propaganda.

Facebook has stopped short of labeling the Cambridge Analytica incident a breach.

But the social media giant prohibits this type of data to be sold or transferred “to any ad network, data broker or other advertising or monetization-related service,” according to the New York Times, who broke the story earlier this month.

Cambridge Analytica did anyway.

Crete Civic Center symbol of lack of lawmaker vision

To the Editor: The City of Plattsburgh has been stuck in a rut for years and will continue to be as long as government personnel and elected officials, with no business sense or vision, run the show.

Case in point: The Crete Civic Center, which they have been complaining about for years and even suggested tearing down to use as a parking lot. Th is is a potential source of revenue that has never been taped or explored properly.

Keep in mind that the tracking of every like, favorite and share is technically legal, and sharing this info with marketing firms is essentially Facebook’s business model.

But at what expense?

For years now, the platform has been a dumpster fire of conspiracy theories, image macros and foreign propagandists that far outweighs any collective benefit the platform may have once had, including the opportunity to strengthen our local communities.

At what point do we draw the line when it comes to letting outside actors infringe

Zuckerberg should heed the calls by lawmakers to testify in front of Congress and justify what Facebook is doing to regain user trust and safeguard against further breaches — including those by foreign powers.

Facebook should have done a better job of protecting user privacy.

But we are also to blame for giving tech firms such a prominent role in our lives with such childlike naivety, taking quizzes and spreading digital rubbish with reckless abandon.

Cambridge Analytica exploited a loophole in Facebook API that allowed the firm to collect data not only from the quiz takers themselves, but also from their Facebook friends.

We concede the sustainable solution isn’t to ask everyone to delete their social media presence.

No one reading this likely will.

But it’s probably a good idea to develop a sense of social media fluency and literacy, and reduce your online footprint.

Be vigilant — and watch out for hucksters.

And we can ask Congress to draft some meaningful legislation to protect our rights as users, particularly as foreign governments continue to probe ways to sow discord in our democratic institutions.

If not a catalyst for deleting your account, the scandal should at least serve as a giant alarm bell for users to be more discerning about their habits.

Essex-Charlotte ferry robbed Cash taken from unattended till

ESSEX | An alleged thief got more than a ride across the Lake Champlain last week, and is believed to have also departed the vessel with an undisclosed amount of cash after robbing the Charlotte to Essex Ferry.

The theft took place Tuesday, March 20, on the 3 p.m. crossing from the Vermont (Charlotte) side of the lake to the New York (Essex) side, according to Vermont State Police.

Sgt. Mike Kamerling of the VSP said the crossing does not have dockmasters over the winter months because of a decrease in traffic.

Instead, commuters pay for their passage on the ferry. The current staffing will change after March 25.

At the time the cash was stolen, the register where the money was had been left unattended as crew members attended to other responsibilities, according to authorities.

It was unattended for a short period of time, but long enough for the alleged thief or thieves to take off with the undisclosed amount of cash.

Kamerling is waiting for information from the Lake Champlain Transportation Company, which runs the ferry. The case may also expand to include New York State authorities.

Calls to LCTC were not returned as of Friday deadline.

In October of 2016, the same route was victim of a robbery, as two masked thieves robbed the ferries in the early morning hours. The perpetrators held two overnight workers at gun point and sprayed them with pepper spray. Richard West and Tiera Herron were later arrested. ■ Authorities have asked anyone with information on the case to call the Vermont State Police at (802) 878-7111.

Vermont State Police are investigating a theft aboard the Charlotte to Essex Lake Champlain Ferry, where an undisclosed amount of money was taken from the commercial vessel March 20.

PLATTSBURGH | The Foundation of CVPH’s annual Easter Egg Hunt takes place Saturday, March 31 at 10 a.m. on the hospital front lawn. This free event is open to children in second grade and younger.

FOXY is a terrier/poodle mix, gray and black, who arrived on Feb. 14.

She’s 8 years old and weighs 12 pounds.

Foxy is a sweet, mellow, loving and happy go lucky old girl who is waiting for her new beginning at Elmore SPCA. She came from a home who had too many dogs to properly care for and hasn’t had the best of care.

This older dog arrived with a lot of mats in her fur, fleas, ear infections, thickened skin and super long nails.

Most of her teeth were literally falling out of her mouth and she could hardly walk on her feet properly due to the mats and the super long nails.

We were able to shave her down, cut her nails down as low as possible, spay her, make her current on vaccinations and confirmed she is negative for heartworm, ehrlichia, lyme and anaplasmosis. Foxy is now doing so much better.

She really just wants to go outside to do her business then come right back inside. She likes to sleep a lot and would make an excellent lap dog for a couch potato!

Foxy is an older dog who will probably need a bit more vetting than the average senior dog. She only eats wet dog food as she is used to eating people food more than dog food. Foxy is loving and is much more comfortable in her own skin.

We understand that anyone could fall in love with this great old gal, but we need to ensure that she goes to a great home who will be able to provide the vet care (dental, blood work, etc) that an older dog who hasn’t had the best of custodial care might need.

Foxy is ready to meet her new family and would love to cuddle on your lap soon!

Local graduate lauded as ‘Outstanding Scholar’ at RIT Ausable Valley High alumnus Priscilla Coats recipient of prestigious award

ROCHESTER | Priscilla Coats was honored last Thursday at the Outstanding Scholar Awards at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).

Each of the students honored has achieved the distinction of maintaining a minimum grade-point average of 3.85 out of a possible 4.0.

A graduate of Ausable Valley High school in Clintonville, Coats is pursuing a BS with a double major in accounting and management information systems.

All awardees have completed at least 83 credit hours of study, more than two-thirds of the credit hours required

for a baccalaureate degree.

The selection of students was based on other factors complementing academic achievements, such as creative work, service on student committees, civic activities, employment and independent research.

The award puts Coats in the top 1 percentile of all undergraduate students at RIT. Coats is a member of the Honors program and Beta Gamma Sigma international business honor society.

Priscilla plans to become a CPA and begin work at an accounting firm.

On campus, she serves as president of Saunders Next Generation of Accountants. She is currently interning at accounting firm Mengel, Metzger, Barr.

Ausable Valley High teacher Ms. Connie Favreau was also honored as a teacher of distinction for her guidance and dedication in helping Coats continue her education in the accounting field. ■

Medical marijuana dispensary changes hands

Curaleaf New York to take over Columbia Care next week

PLATTSBURGH | The area’s first medical marijuana dispensary will be under new ownership next week.

Curaleaf New York will take over operations at Columbia Care’s medical marijuana dispensary on Cornelia Street April 5.

“Patients in the North Country rely on this site, and we are pleased we can continue to ensure patients have access to these important treatments that help manage painful and chronic conditions,” said Michelle Bodner, president of PalliaTech NY. Columbia Care made the decision to expand and transfer its operation to Brooklyn, where they do not currently have a presence, said a spokesperson.

Curaleaf holds medical marijuana licenses in nine states.

Columbia Care opened their Plattsburgh location in 2016, one of the first 20 dispensaries across the state authorized by legislation passed by the state legislature.

“Columbia Care is grateful to have had the opportunity to serve North Country patients for the last two years,” said CEO Nicholas Vita in a statement.

Clinton County and the City of Plattsburgh have been “incredible partners in helping support our mission and ensuring patients received the care and access they require,” said Vita.

“We thank our patients, participating prac-

titioners, elected officials, law enforcement and the community at large for the opportunity to serve the region. We have every confidence that patients will continue to be served well by Curaleaf.”

The facility will continue to provide patients in Clinton, Franklin and Essex counties with access to pharmaceutical-quality products and counseling.

No lapse is expected as a result of the changeover.

Both companies are working with the state Department of Health (DOH) to ensure continuity of operations and support for patients.

Columbia Care operates a vertically integrated business, which means they control the cultivation, manufacturing and distribution of the product, which is grown at Rochester’s Eastman Kodak Business Park.

Many of those same products will be offered to Curaleaf via wholesaling, including new medical marijuana tablets.

The state’s medical marijuana program has been faulted as overly cautious, an approach that has staved off growth.

Following criticisms of a slow increase in patient numbers and the limited number of medical conditions that can be treated by non-smokable forms of the substance, the DOH modified the program in 2016 to broaden the list of eligible conditions, including chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The recent reforms also expanded the number of authorized growers from five to 10. Each is allowed to operate four dispensaries.

While the state’s medical marijuana program is tightly controlled, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has called for a study to explore the legalization of recreational marijuana.

Ten doctors in Clinton County have registered to provide prescriptions to 389 certified patients as of March 21.

No doctors have been licensed in Essex County, but 75 patients are certified. In Franklin County, two doctors treat 121 certified patients.

Statewide, there are 1,516 registered practitioners participating in the program and 48,468 certified patients, according to the DOH. ■

“If it was legalized in New Jersey and legal in Massachusetts and the federal government allowed it to go ahead, what would that do to New York, which is right in the middle?” Cuomo said.

The proposed state panel would study the effect legalization has had in neighboring states and the potential impact on tax revenue.

The DOH-led study will also probe how the state would be impacted as the Trump administration has authorized prosecutors to more aggressively enforce federal marijuana laws, a move that will likely increase the ambiguity regarding the interplay between state and federal statutes.

Plattsburgh-D.C. connection formally gets greenlight Feds approve SkyWest service to DC from Plattsburgh International Airport

PLATTSBURGH | The federal Department of Transportation (DOT) on Tuesday officially approved SkyWest to serve Plattsburgh International Airport (PBG) under the Essential Air Service (EAS) program.

SkyWest, a subsidiary of United Airlines, will provide PBG with 12 nonstop trips per week to Washington-Dulles International Airport at an average fare of $105 per person.

In return, the airline will receive an annual subsidy from the DOT of $3,371,895 for the next two years.

That two-year term begins on July 1.

Legislator Robert Hall (Area 10), chairman of the county PBG committee, was ecstatic upon hearing of the DOT’s approval.

“It’s great news. We are really excited about it,” Hall

told The Sun. “Soon you’re going to be able to go to Washington. You’ll be able to book a flight from Plattsburgh and go anywhere you want to go. Anywhere in the United States, and in Europe. It’s going to happen.”

The decision has not been without controversy.

After the legislature formally backed SkyWest in January, a number of residents and the airport’s former provider, PenAir, spearheaded a letter-writing campaign to implore the DOT to award the EAS contract to PenAir. PenAir was not immediately available for comment on Tuesday afternoon.

But a PenAir spokesman told The Sun in January that if SkyWest received the EAS subsidies, they planned to pull out of the airport entirely.

PenAir’s contract ends in late June, according to Airport Manager Christopher Kreig, and officials have been assured that there will be a smooth transition.

“We’ve been told that PenAir will remain in the market for a smooth transition,” he told The Sun. “We appreciate the service that PenAir has provided over the last six years and we wish them the best.”

During the last two months, residents have raised con-

cerns over losing the connection to Boston Logan International Airport, the possibility of job losses locally and the potential for the airport’s on-campus hangar to lie vacant, effectively losing revenue for the county.

At the time, Hall conceded that the latter is a possibility, but it was too soon to tell what the effects of PenAir’s departure would be.

Throughout the three-month waiting period between when the Clinton County Legislature formally backed SkyWest and the DOT’s decision on March 20, the legislature has remained confident that SkyWest’s service will better not only the county, but bolster economic development in the region.

Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman echoed his support for SkyWest.

“I’m really excited about this development,” he told The Sun. “Locally, Plattsburgh International Airport is recognized as a premier airport in the North Country. Pairing with SkyWest, a premier service, that profile will only grow.”

A study of the four million-person population within a 90-minute radius of PBG, found Washington, D.C. to have the biggest market in the area, Kreig said.

SkyWest’s current term will run through 2020. ■

Beekmantown faulted in state audit Truck purchase didn’t follow competitive bidding requirements

BEEKMANTOWN | The Town of Beekmantown has been faulted in an audit by the state Comptroller’s Office for failing to procure goods in accordance with mandated competitive bidding requirements — including $40,387 to purchase a new 2017 pickup truck.

The lack of competitive bidding also resulted in the town spending $21,287 more than necessary for diesel fuel purchases.

As part of the report, the town clerk was also faulted for failing to record all purchases in a timely manner and for neglecting to prepare accountability analyses.

HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT OVERSPENDS

State auditors found that the Beekmantown Highway Department failed to purchase diesel

fuel from a county or state-contracted provider, effectively overspending for fuel by about $21,287 between January 2015 and May 2017.

The report also revealed that the highway department purchased a $40,387 pickup truck from a provider that wasn’t state-contracted (though auditors couldn’t find a comparable truck through state- or county-contracts to determine whether a lower price could’ve been found).

“The (town board) and highway superintendent have not assured residents that the pickup truck purchase was made in the most prudent and economical manner,” read the report, which was released last month.

Highway Superintendent Roger Perry said that the truck had been an emergency purchase.

The town board, he said in his official response, failed to classify it as such in their resolution to purchase the vehicle.

“Future emergency purchases will be clearly identified to the (town board) when authorization is requested,” Perry wrote.

Purchases that aren’t an emergency, he said, will be made using state vendors or other law-abiding procedures.

Regarding the diesel fuel, the audit determined the town failed to take advantage of a contract with a vendor under a county arrangement. Doing so would have allowed the town to buy fuel at a price 25 cents per gallon less than their former arrangement.

TOWN CLERK CITED

Town Clerk Kelly LaFountain was criticized for failing to record deposits and file reports accurately and within a set time frame; for failing to present supporting documents for cash deposits; and for not preparing accountability analyses, all of which resulted in an unidentified balance of $1,100.

“I was not aware that all collections had to be (deposited) within three days,” LaFountain wrote in her official response.

“The town depends on a courier to do deposits. When there is an issue with getting a deposit in on time, I will make notations in the future to justify the late deposit.”

The office will no longer accept credit card payments for building permits, LaFountain said, which added to the confusion over collections not being recorded accurately.

“Although I did make regular deposits, they did not match up with day to day reports,” she said. “I now do a cash total for each day with a cash deposit to reflect the daily town clerk report.”

LaFountain said she wasn’t aware that she had to file monthly reports to the town supervisor by the 15th of each month and will now do so; she will now use correct accountability analyses forms, and she will provide the Beekmantown Board will necessary information for an internal audit.

“I now know that if I have questions in the future, I can utilize the state comptroller as a resource,” LaFountain wrote.

The audit covered the period from Jan. 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017. Beekmantown’s total expenses in 2017 were $2.6 million, according to the report.

“This is an integral process in the fiscal function of the town as a whole and our duty as the elected officials of the town,” wrote the Beekmantown Town Board in their official response. “We appreciate the cooperation of all representatives of the New York State Comptroller’s Office and we will seek guidance for your office whenever necessary.” ■

Several marchers criticized Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro), for what they perceived as inaction on culling gun violence and for accepting campaign donations from the National Rifle Association.

“It informs her actions,” Campbell said. “You’re not going to say no to big supporters.”

According to Stefanik’s 2016 filing with the Federal Election Commission, her re-election campaign received a total of $4,000 in contributions from the NRA Political Victory Fund.

Total receipts from that cycle totaled about $3.1 million.

The lawmaker has met with high school students in recent weeks to discuss gun violence, including groups in St. Lawrence County and Whitehall in Washington County.

President Trump signed two bills into law last week in an effort to curb gun violence, including measures to strengthen the background health check system and provide resources for school security.

Stefanik has also co-sponsored legislation to ban bump stocks, and continues to be an outspoken advocate for bolstering mental health resources.

“I’m deeply engaged in this issue, and I think we can protect our students while also preserving our Second Amendment

rights,” Stefanik said.

More than 800 protests were planned in conjunction with the March For Our Lives in Washington, D.C. on March 24 at locations all around the world.

Those included marches in Cambridge, Albany, Potsdam, Massena, Saranac Lake, Montpelier, Vermont and Montreal, Canada.

Local college spearheads summer arts program

PLATTSBURGH | Clinton Community College (CCC) this summer will host a new program for blossoming young artists.

Clinton Community College President Ray M. DiPasquale recently announced that a week-long summer arts program, the Lake Champlain Summer Arts Institute, would be hosted at CCC between July 23-27 this year.

Open to students ages 13 to 17, the institute will feature sessions in the visual, literary and performing arts.

“Clinton is in a beautifully inspiring location and has top-notch arts facilities,” Di-

Pasquale said. “This is a great opportunity for young students to take advantage of that, as well as learn from professional artists, writers, actors and musicians.”

The arts institute will offer sessions on anime, painting with acrylics, photography, poetry writing, short story writing and more.

Each course is taught by a professional in their respective field. Sessions are offered from 8:30-10:20 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. and

1-3:15 p.m. Students may sign up for one or multiple sessions.

The week will end with a family barbeque, followed by student performances and a showcase of student artwork that will be open to the community.

Community ‘Walks Together’ against racism

Hundreds of students, residents rally at SUNY Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH | Hundreds of students and area residents rallied against racism at SUNY Plattsburgh last Thursday, the latest in a series of events designed to fortify the Lake City as a welcoming community following a string of racially-charged incidents.

Organized by local faith leaders and billed as a way to show support for students of color, the march saw over 300 community members brave the cold and rally through campus in a show of solidarity.

“Our goal is that this be a warm, welcoming, supportive event,” rabbi David Kominsky, an organizer, told a packed crowd at the Newman Center ahead of the march last Thursday.

Kominsky said that following events in recent weeks — between a student’s racist SnapChat message and white nationalist fliers posted around Plattsburgh — students may feel like the city isn’t a welcoming place. “(Students) see the Confederate flags, they see the Facebook posts of ignorant individuals filled with hate, and they feel like that represents the Plattsburgh community as a whole.

“Most of us are quieter, we’re not shouting, ‘Hey, we’re not racist.’”

Many community members are concerned, he said, but remain unsure of how best to make students of color feel safe on campus.

“We don’t know how to make (students) feel safe. But we want to be actively involved in any way we can, and we want to respect that (students) should take the lead, and we’ll follow that lead.”

Latay Moultrie, one of the student activists who organized rallies and forums last month where students voiced their concerns about the college administration’s response to racist incidents on campus, said that she wasn’t able to attend the march last Thursday.

“But any time the community comes together is a good thing,” she said.

‘IT’S JUST HATRED’

Jim Godfrey, a retired state trooper and SUNY Plattsburgh alumnus, said that everyone has the right to feel safe at school.

“I think everybody should have a good college experience,” he said as he followed the march down Rugar Street, the glow of police squad car lights illuminating the pathway as law enforcement halted traffic at the crosswalks.

His thoughts turned to the student’s SnapChat post.

“This is no place for it. It’s just hatred,” he said. “The world already has enough problems.”

Not long after the SnapChat post, at least nine white nationalist fliers were spotted in downtown Plattsburgh, prompting some community members to worry that racism is escalating in the Lake City.

“I does seem like it’s escalating,” said Paul Ferrari, a social worker based in West Chazy.

Ferrari pointed to the fliers as what prompted him to join the march on March 23.

“We’re all just people,” he said. “This is something we need to speak out against.”

According to Plattsburgh City Police Lieutenant Brad Kiroy, police did not receive any formal complaints about the posters. Because no formal complaint was filed, there’s no formal investigation into the matter. But Plattsburgh City Police remain on the lookout.

“If there’s a violation of law, that’s certainly something we’ll address,” Kiroy told The Sun earlier this month.

RESIGNATION VOTE STALLED

Last month a student’s racist SnapChat post, which included the message “lynching n***ers tonight,” roiled the campus community for weeks and prompted student activists to call for three college administrators to resign.

The student who posted the SnapChat left the college the next day, and the college president, John Ettling, released a list of proposals a few days later designed to address student concerns and bolster inclusivity on campus.

Ettling kickstarted the first, a social justice task force, last week.

But the students’ call for the resignation of Ettling, Chief Diversity Officer J.W. Wiley and Director of Student Conduct Larry Allen appears to have stalled in the chain of command.

Through it was approved by the Student Association on Feb. 21 and sent on to faculty on Feb. 27, the Faculty Senate deferred action to an all-faculty meeting on March 2, where no action was taken.

former city councilor Stuart Voss, was expected to be circulated after the last faculty meeting before being released to permissive referendum.

But that resolution hasn’t been circulated since that meeting on March 2, according to Voss.

“Faculty are continuing to discuss how they can make a meaningful statement and meaningful change to show all students that they care about inclusion on the campus and in classrooms,” said Wendy Gordon, the faculty’s presiding officer.

The faculty and staff don’t have the authority to ask for the resignation of college administrators. But if faculty agree to support the Student Association’s vote of no confidence, whether in its entirety or by singling out certain administrators, it’s an opinion that will resonate, Gordon told The Sun earlier this month.

“This is a document that carries moral weight,” she said.

Asked how she felt that the faculty and staff have yet to vote on students’ call for resignations, Moultrie sighed.

“I don’t know how I feel about that right now,” she said.

“I’m still trying to wrap my head about it.” ■

SUNY PLATTSBURGH SOCIAL JUSTICE TASK FORCE

SUNY Plattsburgh President John Ettling named Maxine Perry and Dr. Jonathan Slater to co-chair the Social Justice Task Force, the first of a list of steps proposed to improve the campus climate.

The task force is charged with helping the president and college leadership better understand matters of social justice, ensuring all voices are heard, according to a news release. The work will be ongoing and inform further action steps the college should undertake and what other factors should be considered.

The group is expected to send its initial report to Ettling no later than Aug. 1.

“Maxine and Jonathan are especially qualified to help lead this effort,” Ettling said in a statement. “Along with the rest of this task force, we are going to have an inclusive, transparent and thoughtful process in how we address matters of diversity and acceptance here.”

Perry currently serves as tenant relations coordinator for the Plattsburgh Housing Authority. She has served as coordinator and member for a number of local advocacy groups.

“In order to create a peaceful community, we must practice social justice,” Perry said. “Protecting social justice is a catalyst to propel individuals and groups to action, therefore aspiring to seek solutions that are fair and just.”

Slater is director of the college’s Institute for Ethics in Public Life, an associate professor of public relations and is chair of the department of journalism and public relations.

His career has also included work in cross-cultural advertising, economic development, public television and the classroom.

“Social justice is not a thing; it’s a continuous process that involves an entire institution — all of its stakeholders working together,” Slater said. “Social justice is first and foremost a collective responsibility to protect those at a disadvantage and to help them flourish in tangible ways.

By establishing this task force, SUNY Plattsburgh is clearly demonstrating its commitment to social action and cultural change that will benefit the entire campus community.”

The creation of the Social Justice Task Force is one of 10 steps outlined by Ettling in February to address diversity and campus climate matters. ■

“It’s this November,” said Nelson. “Well, June. I’m running against Elise Stefanik.”

He signed the petition.

“Elise is not doing her job and she’s not talking to people,” said Smith.

But before he takes on the lawmaker, Nelson must first dispatch six primary opponents, including Don Boyajian, Tedra Cobb, Emily Martz, David Mastrianni, Dylan Ratigan and Katie Wilson, all of whom are also circulating petitions.

In addition, Wilson has secured the Working Families Party endorsement, and Lynn Kahn has announced she is seeking to run as an independent and on the Green Party line.

Nelson bounded across the street, rapped on a door and stuffed a palm card into the doorframe.

“Generally you can hear some type of stir,” Nelson said. “Knock, listen.”

This isn’t the candidate’s first time circulating petitions.

Nelson, a former legislative aide, served as a delegate for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) unsuccessful bid for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination.

And while Sanders was unsuccessful, Nelson has largely modeled his campaign after the senator’s populist brand of grassroots activism speckled with broadsides against income inequality.

The candidate also boasts road-tested field experience, having run for local office and putting in time volunteering for the two previous Democratic nominees, Aaron Woolf

and Mike Derrick, eventually running field operations for the latter’s 2016 effort, which he lost to Stefanik by 35 points.

Lessons learned along the way in the megacompetitive petition process include telling prospective voters to “sign how they vote” and try to have information on the form precompleted — except for their actual signature.

Following the petition deadline, it’s standard operating procedure for campaigns to litigate to have signatures invalidated.

“So long as the intent of the voter is there, it should be counted,” Nelson said. “But people can get nitpicky.”

The candidate continued to prowl the neighborhood.

Some folks weren’t home.

Several declined to sign.

Others said they didn’t want to be bothered.

“I’m not interested,” said one man, who stopped and eyeballed the candidate, who had made it midway up his driveway.

“Tell me one thing you can do to change Congress,” he said.

“I believe in single-payer health care,” Nelson responded.

In what amounted to a stand-off, the man warily eyed him before the candidate quickly segued into combating the role of money in politics, a chief campaign platform.

The man dismissed him and started walking back inside, shooing off campaign literature.

“I won’t read it,” he said.

But he told Nelson his wife might be interested, and to come back later.

“That went from a ‘go to hell’ to a maybe,”

Nelson said.

But rejection is all part of running for office, he said.

And canvassing is always a mixed bag.

Locking in signatures can be contingent on numerous variables, including how neighborhood house numbers are configured.

Nelson has personally canvassed neighborhoods at least nine times since the petition process started on March 6, including in Lowville, Stillwater, Malone and Ogdensburg.

“We got hit with three snowstorms in the first week,” he said, “so that was tough.”

He studied his clipboard, knocked on a door and a woman named Kathleen signed.

“Do you have any questions about the federal government?” Nelson asked.

“No, thank you,” said Kathleen.

“The primary is on June 26 if you want to vote for me,” Nelson said.

The temperature was 30 degrees and dropping.

As the shadows grew longer, the candidate appeared to be in an enthusiastic mood, opining on everything from the current makeup of the Democratic National Committee, how to spur broader interest in civic engagement, government reform and what constitutes strong leadership from elected officials.

“Do you have any concerns?” he asked a woman.

“It’s been interesting,” she responded.

Nelson gave her his 30-second campaign pitch and she listened attentively.

“Everybody wants the gold medal, but we all want our teammates to do well,” Nelson said, referring to his Democratic opponents, all of whom are clamoring to

Plattsburgh man arrested on criminal contempt charge Ellenburg man arrested for rape

ELLENBURG | On March 16, New York State Police arrested 21-year-old Jesse J. Macey of Ellenburg for having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old victim on Jan. 5. Macey was charged with rape in the third degree. He was arraigned in the Town of Champlain Court where he was released on pre-trial release. Macey is to reappear in the Town of Champlain Court on May 3 at 2 p.m. ■

Three arrested in cocaine, heroin bust

PLATTSBURGH | On March 20, Plattsburgh City Police arrested Cody J. Grenier, 24, of Dannemora; Eryn Devins, 31, of Ellenburg; and Amber Woody, 29, of Plattsburgh.

Grenier and Davis were both charged with one count of criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony.

Woody was charged with one count of criminal nuisance, a felony. The arrests stem from an ongoing investigation that culminated in seizures of heroin and crack cocaine during a vehicle stop and the execution of a search warrant at two separate Plattsburgh locations.

Last Wednesday, Plattsburgh City Police stopped a vehicle with Grenier and Davis inside traveling on South Catherine Street. Grenier was found in possession of 56 individual bags containing heroin, and Devins was found in possession of 47 individual bags containing crack cocaine.

Following the vehicle stop, a search warrant was executed at 159D South Catherine St. During the execution of the warrant an additional 57 bags of heroin and seven bags of crack cocaine were seized.

Police estimate the street value of the narcotics to be in excess of $10,000.

Grenier was arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court and committed to the Clinton County Jail on $25,000 cash, $100,000 bond. Davis was arraigned in Plattsburgh City Court and committed to the Clinton County Jail on $5,000 cash, $25,000 bond. Woody was released on an appearance ticket. Future charges are pending. ■

PLATTSBURGH | On March 24, Clinton County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Richard M. Perales, 39, of Plattsburgh, for criminal contempt. The arrest was made subsequent to sheriff’s deputies’ investigation of a complaint received on a prior date, in which it is alleged that Perales violated a duly served order of protection when he went to the residence of the victim listed in the stay away order of protection. Perales was processed at the sheriff’s office and arraigned on the above charge in the Town of Champlain Court. Perales was remanded to the Clinton County Correctional Facility without bail. Perales is scheduled to reappear in the Town of Champlain Court on a later date. ■

Vermont woman arrested for DWI in Rouses Point

ROUSES POINT | On March 20, Clinton County Sheriff’s Deputies received complaints of a vehicle operating erratically in the Village of Rouses Point. Deputies located the vehicle on Bridge Road and arrested the operator, Roxanne Robinson of St. Albans, Vermont, on the above-listed charges following a traffic stop. It’s alleged Robinson, 39, was operating the vehicle while in an intoxicated condition. Robinson was processed at the sheriff’s office’s Rouses Point substation and released after being issued appearance tickets.

She is set to appear in Town of Champlain Court for arraignment on a later date. ■

Champlain man arrested for DWAI

CHAMPLAIN | On March 24, Clinton County Sheriff ’s Deputies arrested Cody R. Mesec of Champlain on charges of driving while ability-impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor; unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation; and two traffic infractions. The arrest was made following a traffic stop in the Town of Beekmantown. It’s alleged that Mesec, 27, was operating a vehicle while impaired by drugs. It’s also alleged he possessed marijuana.

Mesec was processed at the sheriff ’s office and released after being issued appearance tickets returnable to Town of Beekmantown Court in April. ■

Plattsburgh teen arrested for petit Unattended death under investigation larceny BEEKMANTOWN | On March 26, at approximately 2:30 p.m., New York State Police in Plattsburgh responded to a report of an unattended death in the vicinity of Point Au Roche Road and Route 9, in the Town of Beekmantown.

The victim, an 88-year-old woman, was located outside, near her residence.

The complaint was received from a local business employee, who reported a customer had stolen his cell phone. Through investigation, Leduc, 18, was identified and taken into custody at

“Steady as she goes,” said Nelson. “I’m confident these are good signatures. It’s a good neighborhood — lots of Democrats.

But folks aren’t home from work yet.”

He circled back around in an attempt to hit the addresses he missed.

And then he ended back up at the home of the voter who shot him down.

The door swung open and the two looked at each other.

The voter, who eventually identified himself as an independent, peppered Nelson with questions for 10 minutes, grilling him on his ideas on how curb the opiate crisis, treatment options for incarcerated addicts and health care solutions.

His wife came out and signed, and the two shook hands.

“I’ll look for you,” he told Nelson before going back inside.

Nelson got back into the car.

“I’ll count that as a win,” he said. ■

PLATTSBURGH | On March 22, Clinton County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Lateisha N. Forker of Plattsburgh on a warrant for violating her probation. The warrant was issued by the Town of Plattsburgh Justice Court. Forker, 22, was placed on probation by the court following a conviction of criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree and petit larceny last January. New York State Police assisted with the warrant investigation. Forker was arraigned in Town of Plattsburgh Court and was released on her own recognizance. Forker is scheduled to reappear in the Town of Plattsburgh Court on a later date to face the allegations. ■

Chazy woman arrested for drug possession

CHAZY | On March 22, at approximately 5 p.m., New York State Police conducted a traffic stop on Route 3 in the Town of Plattsburgh. The driver, Amanda K. Riggs, 32, of Chazy, was found in possession of approximately 4 grams of marijuana and a quantity of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine pills. Riggs was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell; criminal possession of a controlled substance nonoriginal container, a New York state Public Health Law violation, and unlawful possession of marijuana. She was arraigned at the Town of Plattsburgh Court where she was released on pre-trial release. ■

Chazy woman arrested for DWAI

CHAZY | On March 22, at approximately 10:50 p.m., New York State Police responded to a report of a hit and run property damage collision in front of 2396 Rte. 9 in the Town of Ausable. The suspect vehicle was traveling south on Route 9 when it crossed into the northbound lane of travel and struck a mailbox at that address and then a snowbank, and left the scene. The vehicle was described as a green 2004 Subaru and was last seen by witnesses driving south on Route 9. The suspect vehicle was located soon, parked in front of 142 Ausable St. in the Town of Ausable, with obvious passenger side damage and a flat rear tire. While conducting area interviews, troopers located the driver, who identified herself as 31-year-old Eryn B. Devins, of Chazy.

Devins was placed under arrest for DWAI-drugs. Devins submitted to a breath test, which yielded a blood alcohol content of .00 percent. She was then administered a drug recognition evaluation, which determined Devins to be impaired by a narcotic. Devins then submitted to a blood draw to determine her level of drug impairment. Devins was charged with DWAI-drugs, and further ticketed for leaving the scene of a property damage crash, moved from lane unsafely, and unsafe tire. She was released to appear in the Town of Ausable Court on March 28 at 4 p.m. ■

Speedway sets schedule Airborne set for liftoff on April 28

PLATTSBURGH | With a new racing series and more events heading to town, Airborne Park Speedway is ready for what it hopes will be one of its biggest years ever.

Less than one month away, Airborne will host its first race April 28, with post time at 6 p.m.

All five of the regular racing divisions in action with the DIRTcar Sportsman Series will headline the card.

“The 2018 season at Airborne Park Speedway will return the same five regular racing divisions, with one of them receiving a name change,” Communications Director Robby Knowles said. “The 358-Modifieds, Sportsman, Mini-Mods and Strictly Stocks will return under the same name, with the Renegade division being replaced with the title of Super Stocks.”

BIG EVENTS

Knowles said the highlight of the 2018 season will be the introduction of the World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series to the Cadyville dirt in July.

“This event will have the greatest magnitude of any event run in the speedway’s existence,” Knowles said. “Drivers

from across the United States and Canada will venture to the four-tenths mile for the event that will payout over $52,000 in purse money on Wednesday, July 25.”

In addition, the Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modifieds will return for the second season. They will be in action Tuesday, July 31, with over $33,000 is purse money.

The Empire Super Sprints will appear twice in 2018. DIRTcar also has regional touring series that will stop at Airborne in 2018. The DIRTcar Sportsman Series and Pro Stock Series have a following throughout the northeast and into Canada.

In a racing “exchange program,” Airborne and Mohawk Raceway will have a five race Sportsman Series this season with two events will be run at Airborne on May 26 and Aug. 11, while Mohawk will host July 20, Aug. 31 and Sept. 14.

Each race will be a 50-lap distance.

“With a year under our belt, we expect our product to get bigger and better and to see another increase in cars and our fan base,” Knowles said.

PRESEASON EVENTS, SPONSORS

There will be an Airborne Park Speedway car show at the Champlain Centre Mall in Plattsburgh on Saturday and Sunday, April 14 and 15. Drivers will be on hand to meet with fans and display their cars for the upcoming season.

The following weekend will be an open practice with a time to be announced at a later date.

Local dirt track racing returns April 28 at Airborne Park Speedway, with several popular touring series coming to town.

Returning for the new season as a title sponsor will be Egglefield Bros. Ford.

In addition to sponsoring the 358-Modifieds, Egglefield also remains on the Official Pace Car and Official Pace Truck of the Airborne Park Speedway.

Denny Egglefield has been a long-time fan and supporter of the Airborne Park Speedway.

Egglefield Ford can be found not only on billboards or on pace cars, but also on race cars.

The late Leon Gonyo was probably the most recognizable driver that carried the Egglefield name on their car.

It wasn’t limited to him though, as the name could be found on a number of other cars throughout the garage area. ■

Section VII gymnasts compete in states, name all stars

HUNTINGTON | While the regular season ended for Section VII gymnastics back in November, the state championships are held in March.

Earlier this month, 13 athletes from the section who qualified for the state championship meet were at Cold Spring Harbor High School to compete in the NYSPHSAA championships.

“The team received an eighth place finish scoring 155.8, one of our best finishes at the

state level,” PHS coach Janice Trudeau said.

Delaney Brown from Peru led the team, scoring a 9.1 to tie for ninth place on vault.

Brown also finished 16th on floor with a 9.025 and 22nd on bars with an 8.0. In the all-around, Brown placed 21st with an all around score of 34.125.

Morgan Hughes from Plattsburgh High and Brown tied for 33rd on beam with an 8.0, followed by teammate Allie Timmons from Peru with a 7.95.

Rylee Desso from Peru came in 31st on bars with a 7.3.

On the floor exercise, Jenna Swyers from

Peru was 21st with a score of 8.4.

Alandra Gebo received the NYSPHSAA sportsmanship award for Section VII at the state meet.

ALL STARS

Brown of Peru headlined the Section VII all stars, which include all state qualifiers.

Brown, a sophomore, has swept the all-around in Section VII since she started competing at the varsity level.

Fellow Peru teammates include sophomore Rylee Desso (state qualifier on bars), sophomore Jenna Swyers (floor), junior Allie Timmons (vault, beam), senior Alandra Gebo (floor)

and junior Olivia Tarabula (bars, beam, floor), along with an honorable mention to Kira Fisher, who was a four-time state qualifier.

For Plattsburgh High, senior Madison Baker was named a state qualifier on the vault and bars. Baker has led the Hornets in scoring for the past several years. She was joined on the all star list by freshman Morgan Hughes (all around).

Beekmantown was led by all around state qualifier Lauren Gonyo on the all star list, along with eight grader Nate Sarnow (vault, bars), eighth grader Lily Spiegel (beam), freshman Frankie Beaird (vault) and freshman Paige Gricoski (vault). ■
