Cuomo leads assault against tax plan GOP-penned bill is “political retaliation,” say blue state governors

ALBANY | Gov. Andrew Cuomo isn’t mincing words when it comes to the tax reform bill that cleared the U.S. Senate last week, calling it “trickle-down on steroids” and “a fraud” perpetrated on the American public.

Cuomo reserved particular vitriol for the amendment that would end state and local tax deductions up to $10,000 annually.

Rolling back the provision known as SALT is a deliberate attempt to target high-tax states like New York, he said, which sends $40 billion more in tax revenue to Washington, D.C. than it receives.

“It’s political retaliation through the tax code,” he said Monday on conference call with reporters. “It will be devastating for the states that are affected.

“It’s 40 percent of the GDP — you’re targeting the blue states.”

The average deduction for taxpayers in the Empire State is more than $6,000 per year. But capping the tax break may also impact high-earners who would leave the state, he said » Tax Reform Cont. on pg. 5

While some gift card sellers have done away with inactivity fees, consumers should still ask whether fees apply when purchasing a gift card.

Since January 1, 2011, New York state has required companies offering rebates to disclose whether those rebates will be issued in the form of a gift card and whether any fees will apply to those cards. Rebate cards are not all covered by the same rules as regular gift cards, so this disclosure helps consumers to identify the different cards and how they can be used.

Gift cards may have terms and conditions that can decrease the value of the gift card.

These may include charging: • Service fees when the card is purchased; • Dormancy fees if the gift card is not used within a certain period of time; • Fees to call and check the balance remaining on the card; • Replacement fees for lost or stolen gift cards.

Photo by Christopher South “The luncheon is held in honor of Joan,” said Johnsburg Library director Susan Schmidt. “It has just slowly gotten bigger and better every year.”

This year, reservations were full by Nov. 20, as 81 women signed up for the event.

The luncheon is a fundraiser for ACOC, with 100 percent of the proceeds of the fashion show and silent auctions going to support the organization.

“Last year we raised $1,500 for the ACOC,” Schmidt said. “People just love this - they go crazy for it.”

Many of those who attend the annual luncheon are seniors who volunteer in the community, including at the Town of Johnsburg Library, located in North Creek.

The volunteers or Friends of ACOC model the clothing at the luncheon, as the auctioneer tries to up the bids for featured items.

On Monday, the fashion show featured about two dozen different items to be auctioned, which is not the normal case at the Clothing Center, where all the clothing is free.

Norwegian wood Deer hunting is ending, so working in the woods is now my pleasure.

I enjoy managing my woodlot, not because it’s making money.

It’s not.

It’s because I have a true blue hardcore ethic about taking care of the land, water and woods.

Simply put, I enjoy it.

While I walk through my woods, I get to do a mental evaluation of the trees to keep and those to go — a gray matter forest management plan.

First I want to see some sky, so opening up the canopy is important. Hemlocks grow thick, so they will be culled out for timber or camp firewood. Long term is quality timber, firewood and wildlife habitat. Short term goals are to thin, release and open the canopy so the sun reaches the earth. It’s amazing what the removal of one tree will do.

I know what I want to grow in the future, whether I plant seeds or seedlings. Nature will supply its share, but I also want a stake in the game, so I’ll plant what I want growing in that particular area.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has a nursery in Saratoga and purchasing seedlings through them is very reasonable.

Red oak, wild apples, and other trees will be on the purchase order this spring. Planting 100 trees a year is easy, and the work can be done in half of a day.

This season, I have a partner to help me get my logs out. After perusing the internet for three-point hitch tractor winches, from Binghamton to New Hampshire, I found a good deal through the LeBerge and Curtis John Deere dealership in Canton.

I bought a Norwegian made Igland Norse 350 winch with three choker chains to get the wood out.

I had three friends offer me the use of their winches, but borrowing someone’s equipment is not what I like to do. I just wouldn’t want to take a chance on damaging it. That could ruin a good friendship, and friendships are more valuable to me than anything else. So thank you guys, but I bought my own!

It works out well for me because I can keep it mounted on my tractor and do my woods work when I feel like it, when the weather fits my mood, or my mood fits the work. I had to agonize about buying the tool, because I don’t like spending money, unless it’s on a fishing trip to Montana, but that doesn’t count.

After just a few days of using it, believe me, it was worth it!

There is less back breaking work and chain aggravation. It’s a labor and mind saver. I have winched out numerous blown down trees, dropped and dragged hemlock, and started on next season’s firewood.

All of the wood is skidded to a clearing to be sliced and diced. With the Norwegian Norse winch and my wood, I have given the woodlot a new name: Norwegian Wood, after the Beatles song!

Come spring, my tree plantings will go in, the roadways will be seeded down with clover, and I’ll go fly fishing.

All three came out swinging against the bill.

Brown said the measure exacerbates inequality, and would further divide an already-divided nation.

“It is evil in the extreme,” said Brown, who likened Republican lawmakers to “mafia thugs.”

“It’s going to divide the hell out of us and give crumbs to 40 percent of the people.”

Brown also criticized the bill for increasing the federal deficit by $1.5 trillion over the next decade, a measure Cuomo said was part of a calculated Republican strategy.

“They are creating the debt that will then justify their second philosophical step, which is to cut government spending, and do it by hurting the poorest Americans,” Cuomo said.

If signed by President Trump, the bill would give Republicans a much-needed legislative victory in a year largely devoid of them.

The GOP-led House passed their version of the bill in November, and the two measures contain many of the same provisions, including doubling the standard deductions for filers.

But unlike the measure that narrowly passed the House, the Senate bill contains deep changes to health care, including rolling back the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate re-

quiring people to purchase health insurance.

State officials have warned this may destabilize the state’s health insurance exchange.

The Senate version would also let taxpayers deduct mortgage interest up to $1 million, and the House version would cap at $500,000.

Both of New York’s senators, Kirsten Gillibrand and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have condemned the legislation, which passed 51-49.

“In my long career in politics, I have not seen a more regressive piece of legislation, so devoid of a rationale, so ill-suited for the condition of the country, so removed from the reality of what the American people need,” wrote Schumer on Twitter.

Trump praised Republican lawmakers.

“Biggest Tax Bill and Tax Cuts in history just passed in the Senate,” he wrote on Twitter. “Now these great Republicans will be going for final passage. Thank you to House and Senate Republicans for your hard work and commitment!”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called the Senate’s passage of its tax bill a “great day for the country.”

House Speaker Paul Ryan praised his colleagues in the upper chamber, and said tax reform will lead to faster economic growth and trigger job creation.

“For the first time since 1986, both the House and the Senate have passed a major overhaul of our nation’s tax code,” he said.

committee so we can get a final bill to President Trump’s desk.”

STEFANIK SOUNDS OFF

Now that the bill has cleared the Senate, the two chambers will start the reconciliation process.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro) broke with her party and voted against the bill, citing SALT. Following her vote last month, the lawmaker said she would continue to work closely with her colleagues from other highly taxed states to ensure that the final tax reform package in Conference addresses those concerns.

The Senate plan maintained the same SALT language as the House plan that Stefanik voted against.

“She believes we need to do more to protect taxpayers in high taxed states,” said Tom Flanagin, a spokesman. “She continues to have discussions on this issue with Members of the Ways and Means Committee as well as House Leadership.”

Stefanik also harbors concerns about the elimination of key deductions, including those for student loan interest, health care expenses and the limits placed on mortgage deductibility.

“In addition to SALT, these are important provisions she will be discussing with her colleagues as the House and Senate conference on the two bills,” said Flanagin on Monday.

Stefanik also believes the individual tax rates should be made permanent in any final package.

The lawmaker, however, is encouraged that both

plans lower tax rates and simplify the tax code.

“There are many positive steps made in the plans, including lowering the corporate tax rate to make us more competitive around the globe,” Flanagin said. “Congresswoman Stefanik is also pleased that there is agreement on doubling the standard deduction and increasing the child tax credit.”

POSSIBLE LEGAL CHALLENGE

Cuomo has repeatedly called out the four members of the state’s Republican delegation who voted for the bill: U.S. Reps. Chris Collins, John Katko, Tom Reed and Claudia Tenney.

“If they vote for this, they’re voting against the interest of their constituents, period,” he said. “A congressperson votes for this? There is no going home in my opinion.”

The state, said the governor, was continuing to research their legal options.

“This is double taxation, and I’m not even sure if it’s legal. We’re going to find out if it is,” he said.

The governor suggested a “repeal and replace” effort would start the day after the legislation was signed into law.

Murphy, too, said the Garden State is exploring legal options, which may become more evident as lawyers sift through the 500page bill passed early-Saturday.

But Brown was more circumspect.

“This is a quintessentially political challenge,” he said. ■

County abolishes occupancy tax committee Panel redundant in wake of broader community involvement, say lawmakers

ELIZABETHTOWN | County lawmakers have tentatively abolished a local occupancy tax panel, citing redundancy and low participation.

The Essex County Board of Supervisors’ Ways & Means Committee voted unanimously on Nov. 27 to disband the Essex County Occupancy Tax Advisory Board. It’s expected the measure will pass the full board on Tuesday.

“We can reactivate this committee at any time. But right now, they don’t have enough people to meet a quorum,” said Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Randy Preston, citing recent resignations.

The original intent of the committee was to review the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism’s (ROOST) annual plan and make recommendations to lawmakers.

But the maturation of that agency and the expansion of their board of directors, as well as a broadening coalition of stakeholders from across the county, has rendered the panel obsolete, said North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi.

“That was done at a time when primary interest in ROOST, and the primary people involved, were all Lake Placid people,” Politi said. “That’s since changed.”

Essex County Attorney Dan Manning said he didn’t believe the panel is mandated by state or local legislation.

“It can be abolished by resolution if that’s the case,” he said. “I’ll double-check it, but I don’t think there is.”

Essex County collects a 3 percent bed tax on all overnight lodging in the county.

While the signs have been showing for years, day by day we see how some with the most power, influence and money

By Dan Alexander in this country have • PUBLISHER • used their resources in unthinkable ways, but it seems a day of reckoning may be coming.

Last week, the nation was shocked by the fall of NBC Today anchor Matt Laurer.

Laurer’s off-air escapades like those of highly respected Charlie Rose and Bill O’Reilly should have become public years earlier, but these crimes speak more to the system than they do to the individual.

Sadly swamp creatures can be found wherever excessive power, money and influence are delegated to those in authority. We know these vices, if not in the right hands, can be great corrupters of even the best of us.

Most of these people who’ve been exposed, and those yet to be exposed, are some of the brightest people among us.

We look to them for leadership, creativity, sound judgment and in many cases, their charisma has us placing them on pedestals which provides them with a sense of entitlement and invincibility.

With talented individuals like these, do we really think sensitivity courses or more education in sexual harassment will help them see the light and become the upstanding citizens they purport to be?

The folks in Washington apparently think we are that dimwitted. That’s their best recommendation to solve the harassment problem aside from the $17 million of our money they’ve spent to keep a lid on these abuses for the last 20 years.

Capitalism is the foundation of our economy but does anyone need a salary in the tens of millions of dollars a year to perform a job that has many other great perks.

Media stars, like sports stars, corporate executives and government officials, need a strong moral compass to resist the many pitfalls where they so can easily succumb.

George Washington set the tone for two terms in office as he obviously understood this nation was not about royalty or privilege.

Sadly, evil deeds will continue to occur as we are all susceptible to corruptive behavior at all levels. So long as some members of the rich and powerful can intimidate and buy their way out of trouble, it’s our responsibility to keep tabs on their behavior and let them know it will not be tolerated in the court of public opinion. ■

State would be wise to embark on diet plan Counties across the state are rolling out their 2018 budgets.

Leaders in Clinton, Essex and Warren counties have endeavored to keep spending flat. Each of their tentative spending plans have been delivered under the statemandated tax cap.

Essex County, in particular, deserves praise for sticking to their guns and seeing their five-year plan through to completion despite numerous roadblocks.

As of Monday, Essex County’s tentative 2018 spending plan contains a modest 5 cent increase to the tax rate, and a 2.23 percent in the tax levy.

County officials have taken heat over the past half-decade, dodging missiles from the general public and lawmakers who have attempted to chip away at programming and dip into their savings in last-ditch efforts to keep the tax rate flat.

So kudos to budget officers tasked with keeping the county on a starvation diet while ensuring programming is met and the fund balance replenished.

Other localities should now follow the county’s example of making hard choices — including the state.

New York is facing the most troubling fiscal climate since Gov. Andrew Cuomo took office in 2011.

budget deficit, a number that could be doubled within the next two years.

While tax reform at the federal level remains a dangling question mark, among the most troubling items contained within the bill passed by the U.S. Senate last week is the partial repeal of deductions on state and local income taxes.

Repeal of the so-called SALT deduction would hurt high-tax states like New York the most.

While middle-class upstate homeowners would still be able to write off up to $10,000 annually, passage may mean higher-income residents might opt to vote with their feet and leave the state altogether, which would increase the burden for the rest of us.

Local governments may also be pressed to cut spending or lower taxes as a result.

We all know there’s nothing left to cut in the North Country, a measure cast into even sharper relief by this year’s inane statemandated shared service panels.

Cuomo has spent the past year fulminating against federal proposals, and has used nothing short of apocalyptic language to deride the bills and the lawmakers supporting them.

But unlike the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, passage of tax reform is within sight, and Cuomo must now do more than use his bully pulpit and threaten lawmakers.

He should put the state on a crash diet.

The governor typically proposes his budget in January. While he has indicated he will keep state spending growth capped at 2 percent, we can think of a few additional

For me, it is deplorable that the tax bill includes a provision that permits drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a place set aside for future generations of people and the preservation of endangered wildlife. As a resident of the Adirondacks, a protected park, I am disheartened.

I am also a senior facing the possibility of a reduction in or elimination of Medicare funding.

And I wish this was not so, but more importantly, I wish this bill didn’t eliminate affordable health insurance for millions of American children and their parents, many of which live right here in the North Country.

The first should be to reign in the state’s economic development programs.

While we’re largely supportive of the Regional Economic Development Council initiative, which allocates some $8 billion to development projects across the state, many of projects being funded are little more than vanity projects with dubious benefit to the community.

The state should curb refundable tax credits for the film industry, and seriously examine other economic development programs, many of which operate seemingly without proper oversight.

Albany should also seriously explore curtailing waste in Medicaid spending.

One in four state residents are program beneficiaries, costing the state some $60 billion annually, more than any state in the nation.

The governor is fond of big ideas, and his tenure has been lined with an impressive litany of bold-faced policy proposals.

But now that we’re at a decision point, we should also scale back some of these sweeping and bold ideas, particularly those that will carry an impact for local taxpayers illequipped to shoulder them.

What the state should not do, however, is entertain drastic cuts to public education and aid to local governments, two areas that always seem to appear on the chopping block.

If local governments are being put on a diet, then the state needs to swallow that same bitter pill. ■

Village votes to uphold outdoor display ban

LAKE GEORGE | After several months of consideration, a proposal to allow certain limited merchandise displays outdoors was rejected by the village board at their Nov. 18 meeting.

William Massry, proprietor of several T-shirt shops in the village, had requested at several village board meetings this year that he be allowed to place a rack of clothing outside his Dilligaf store on the corner of Canada and Amherst streets.

The village has a law, however, that bans outdoor displays of merchandise, except on specific sidewalk sale days.

But Massry had contended that his father had built the mini-mall on Canada street — which hosts the Dilligaf store — set back from the sidewalk with the understanding that outdoor displays would be allowed under the alcove.

To accommodate Massry’s request, the board had crafted a proposed amendment to the ordinance — despite their criticisms of such a change — that would allow one rack, of a limited size, to be placed under an outdoor alcove of a store, as long as it was on private property.

The board discussed the proposed ordinance amendment at their November meeting — without voicing one comment in support.

“I’ve heard nothing but negative comments about this proposal,” village Mayor Robert Blais said, noting that the Village Planning Board had recently cast a unanimous vote

against the proposed amendment.

“They said it was a step back as far aesthetics of the village, and it might make the street look like a flea market,” he said.

Deputy Mayor John Earl offered a similar opinion.

“I’ve spoken to a lot of people, and not one person was in favor of it,” he said.

Blais said the ordinance change was unfair to merchants who had buildings without alcoves, or those who spent considerable amount of money enclosing their alcoves to meet the restrictions of the existing outdoor display ordinance.

Village Code Enforcement officer Doug Frost agreed, adding that allowing a limited, specific exclusion to the ban would create confusion and prompt merchants to exceed the laws stipulations and create enforcement problems.

“Let’s stay with what we have now,” village Trustee John Root said moments before the board went on record opposing the ordinance change.

Massry was not present at the Nov. 18 meeting, although he has attended other recent board meetings and offered comment.

In other business, the Lake George Village board members tabled a motion that earmarked additional money to pay to extend the seasonal employment of the Lake George fire department’s “station keeper” to a year-round position.

The first will be a walk around the property with Joe Orefiche, the Director of the Cornell Uihlein Research Forest to scout for Forest Tent Caterpillar egg masses. This insect defoliated many of the sugar maple in the Minerva area this past year, and there will be a hike to help estimate spring defoliation likelihood by counting egg masses on the trunks of trees. After the walk, Maple Knoll Farm owner Eric Klippel will give a tour of the maple production facility, followed by refreshments at the sugarhouse. Knights of Columbus seeking donors for holiday baskets To the Editor, Knights of Columbus (K of C) Council #2301 of Au Sable Forks hopes to provide Christmas meals to those in need in the towns of Jay and Black Brook.

Due to the overwhelming generosity of so many, Council #2301 last year delivered Christmas meals to 77 individuals and families, and made food and monetary donations to local food pantries in both Jay and Black Brook.

Our council hopes area residents will consider contributing to this year’s drive, and respectfully requests monetary donations and /or the following items for inclusion in the food baskets: Frozen turkey breasts, ham, turkey and/ or cornbread stuffing, turkey gravy, canned vegetables (corn, green beans, carrots) and cranberry sauce.

Before I arrived in the North Country I lived in New Jersey close to the Delaware Bay, where one

By Christopher South gets a chance to • COLUMNIST • see a lot of beautiful sunsets. My wife, who has more of a history with the Adirondacks, told me you don’t really get to see sunsets here because of the mountains. I have come to learn that seeing the mountains is sort of a trade-off, in that regard.

When I first arrived here in June, I was taken by the beauty of the mountains. Driving along the Northway I literally felt like I was driving through the clouds - large, green clouds, but clouds none the less.

As I drove along the two-lane roads I was constantly glancing into the woods trying to spot large animals.

When you arrive in the summer you can’t help but notice how green the mountains are. As my wife and I discovered trails to walk in we marveled at how many different shades of green there are in the forest, and how the sunlight and shadows help create even more varieties of green.

Of course, fall arrives, and the forest takes on a completely different appearance, with the changing of the leaves.

The autumn leaves eventually fall to the forest floor, and as winter started to set in I was prepared to see the mountains looking rather, well...dead, actually. But instead, I saw colors ranging from a stone gray to any of 100 shades of brown and tan, mingled with the evergreen color of the pines. The real difference is noted when you are on the two-lanes. Just driving north on St. Rt. 9 from Pottersville to Schroon Lake, it’s like an entirely new world has opened up. Instead of seeing a green border on the right, you see more and more of Schroon Lake through the now bare trees. On the left, the green slope of the mountainside has opened up to show to show complicated, stone structures, all craggy and at the same time marvelous. I also like to see the fallen trees in the forest and appreciate the beauty in life coming out of the decay. One of the most beautiful sights I have seen since I have been here is a balsam sapling growing out of a moss-covered stump.

Because the leaves die and drop off we sometimes see there is life in the forest we never knew existed. I just told someone how I was now able to spot houses I never knew existed because they were hidden among the trees. She said she recently saw a house she never say before on the very street where she lives.

The opening up of the forest has me ever hopeful I will see large animals in the forest. I mean other than the four sisters (deer) that are hanging around my neighborhood. ■

As a senior reflecting on my high school years in the North Country, I have been extremely blessed to grow up in a community whose members embody the relationship of both friend and family by pouring into the lives of the younger generation.

As a result of your cheerleading for us at sports events, hugs in Tops, newspaper clippings saved and sent to us, generous donations, applause at concerts, and continual support, we feels deeply valued and loved on a personal level by our community.

Despite not having extended family within a 1,000 mile radius, I have never once lacked for a “grandma” or “grandpa” to be present at any school function or special event.

Through these seemingly small efforts, I can attest that my high school experience has been greatly enriched as I know many of my fellow classmates’ have, because you have chosen to play an active role in our lives.

Whether it’s car washes, bake sales at Stewart’s, or door to door fundraising for our school clubs, your care for us through your donations is so evident and meaningful.

We saw this so clearly during a recent fundraiser at the Schroon Lake town-wide garage sale, as the girls varsity soccer team walked around in our jerseys with baked goods. So many gave with such generosity, interest, and cheer.

Whether you purchased a 50 cent melty cupcake, or donated $20 for a water bottle, we were unceasingly amazed by our sweet community’s enthusiasm and support.

With your donations, we were able to purchase sharp jackets for each member of our soccer team that we now wear with Wildcat pride, but always remembering you — our community members who gladly gave so we could wear them.

As we seniors prepare to embark on our life’s journey, we want to thank all of you who have shown us the way.

You have modeled the power of care, generosity, and invested interest for us, by simply being this to us.

As we pursue our dreams, we will always strive to remember that true success in life comes when we give back to others, like you have so kindly done for us.

I am so blessed to be able to call the North Country home; where genuine and caring people are always found around every corner.

State continuing to weigh proposals for Frontier Town project County lawmakers tight-lipped about private investment, citing non-disclosure agreements

NORTH HUDSON | It’s been nearly a year since the state revealed ambitious plans to transform the former Frontier Town theme park in North Hudson to a regional tourism hub, setting off fevered speculation over a long-dormant eyesore.

The state has allocated $13 million in this year’s state budget for the project.

Initial plans call for state Department of Environmental Conservation-run equestrian facilitates, day-use areas and campgrounds augmented by private investment.

RFPs from the private sector were due Sept. 15, and the state is continuing to weigh the proposals.

“Empire State Development continues to review and assess the proposals received in response to the Frontier Town Request for Proposals,” said ESD Deputy Press Secretary Adam Ostrowski in an email on Friday.

“Since this is still an open procurement, we cannot release information regarding the number of proposals received, as it would impede our ability to negotiate in the best interest of New York state.”

Abandoned since 1998, state and local officials are banking on the prospects of the 300-acre site to revitalize the local economy and steer visitors into less-trafficked areas of the Adirondack Park, a measure that would also aid in alleviating High Peaks congestion.

Essex County lawmakers are tight-lipped about the negotiations, citing non-disclosure

The state is continuing to review RFPs from private enterprises seeking to develop the former Frontier Town site in North Hudson, New York.

“The RFPs are still being reviewed by the review committee, and I’m not sure when those results will be out,” said North Hudson Supervisor Ron Moore.

Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Randy Preston declined to comment, citing the non-disclosure agreement.

According to the RFP, applicants must “strive to address” a number of development objectives, including serving as a launch point for the Adirondack Park and creating “familyoriented and multi-generational activities.”

Successful projects must also “enhance and complement” the state’s proposed development to provide recreational access.

All proposals should address plans for “activation or development” of water and sewer

systems at the site.

Site visits over the summer have drawn representatives from Cushman & Wakefield | Pyramid Brokerage Company of Albany, Inc., ADK Community Works, Aleeze Enterprises Inc., Adirondack Forty-Sixers, Park Strategies and Hyman Hemispheric, LLC, according to public documents.

Jeff Lyman of Hyman Hemispheric told the Adirondack Daily Enterprise in August he envisions a futuristic retail and recreation center at the site he’s tentatively calling the “The Great 21st Century Adirondack Base Camp.”

Moore said he was unsure of when the staterun aspects of the project will commence.

“I think the campsite and equestrian area, the DEC’s portion, will be begun shortly after the new year,” he said.

Most of the decaying buildings on the site of future development have been demolished and removed, and environmental testing work is ongoing.

County officials are continuing to negotiate conservation easements and land sales with the state.

Moore said the state will buy certain land rights from Essex County in the form of conservation easements that will allow the town and county to retain ownership on select parcels.

At least one local business, Paradox Brewery, has confirmed plans to relocate to the site, using the location as the center of their multimillion dollar extension effort.

“Hopefully we can close on that property soon between Paradox and the county,” Moore said. ■

PEOPLE FROM ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER ERA

It is a strange thing, but definitely not an unpleasant one, to live in two worlds remembering people who once, long ago, walked our streets and inhabited our little part of the mighty Adirondacks — then being friendly today with those who inhabit the space that those people once upon a time occupied here on earth.

STORIES AND PEOPLE REMEMBERED

It has always been my opinion that the Town of Stony Creek, a magical place of 87 square miles, is packed with history and has unforgettable stories to tell.

In 1855 the population was 913. In 2010, the permanent population was 767, according to records.

When a person crosses that bridge to enter the town, it is like passing into another land. Nothing has ever been done slowly in Stony Creek. In 2005, 151 years after its opening, the Stony Creek United Methodist Church finally closed its doors for good.

Many years ago, in 1989, my good friends Carol and Peter LaGrasse and I got together and wrote a book, “An Enduring Heritage,” on the history of this fascinating little town. Carol, may Heaven bless her, deserves an award for her saintly patience and putting up with me in those days.

NOTABLE PEOPLE

Several memorable citizens, to name a few, who put Stony Creek (Creek Centre) on the map were John Bowman, Jack Arehart and John O’Neill.

Also to remember are Daniel Gill, Francis Dean, David and Edythe Haskell and Cindy Cameron.

For those who have been lucky enough to be there, who can possibly forget those wonderful Saturday night square dances at Arehart’s Hotel? Little did it occur to us at that time that we were witnessing history. RIBBON CUT FOR COMMUNITY FOREST

The Cunningham family sold the parcel of land, which includes existing snowmobile trails, to the Town of Chester for $65,000.

would last forever and old age was only meant to be inflicted upon sinners.

I used to love to hear popular Supervisor John O’Neill and his Blue Water Boys play their bluegrass and country and western music on the Floyd Bennett Bandstand in Warrensburg. Never to be forgotten also was “Daddy Dick” Richards, a truly fine man and a musician with only one arm, who created great music with that little band.

John O’Neill, 58, died unexpectedly on May 14, 2003.

I am grateful to members of his family for bringing to me some of his historical documents, greatly singed by a hotel fire, but readable. They gave me some very interesting reading material.

A STORM TO REMEMBER

A portion of history that will never be forgotten in Stony Creek was on Aug. 4, 1904 when it started to rain. The storm and the thunder and lightening were unceasing.

That storm rapidly progressed into a torrential deluge, the worst the area had ever seen. There was a rainfall of 14 inches in only four hours. The storm started about four o’clock in the afternoon and as it rapidly progressed throughout the night, streams and creeks overflowed, banks washed out and religious citizens must have had many thoughts of Noah and wished that they had been forewarned so that they could have also built an ark.

Piles of lumber were washed out and sent downstream and they knocked out the supports of the Collins House (later Arehart’s Hotel) at Creek Centre, bumping into bridges along the way. When the hotel collapsed, there were stories of sharpshooting natives shooting out kerosene lamps with their firearms through the hotel windows to avoid fires.

In West Stony Creek, 10 miles away, George Thomson’s barn, with 19 cows in residence, was struck by lightening and set afire. Four of the cows were killed and one of George’s sons was caught under a cow and two of the lad’s ribs were broken.

When Postmaster Smith saw the water pouring down from the sky, he grabbed his stamps and his cashbox and high tailed it out of the post office and down the street, out of harm’s way.

FRONTIER TOWN

Since Stony Creek was founded on Nov. 3, 1852, when it was separated from the Town of Thurman, it has been the average citizen for which the town is to be credited. Scores of stories come flooding back to my mind that I have read in old copies of the Warrensburgh News over these many years.

One story that I remember well was about an average, hard working farmer, who had toiled hard in the hot sun on a summer day and staggered into his little house, exhausted and hungry. On the kitchen shelf of his messy little kitchen was a can of half eaten food that had sat out there since the day before. Famished, he quickly wolfed down the food and sat down to rest. A few hours later he died in agony from food poisoning.

STORIES COME FLOODING BACK

Horrified, it broke my heart when I read about the lady in by-gone days, that lived alone in a little house in Stony Creek.

She woke up in the middle of the night to realize that her house was on fire. Unable to beat the smoke and flames to get to the front door, she ran to the cellar to seek reprieve and relief.

Soon the neighbors witnessed the tragedy and rushed to her rescue. There was a small window in the cellar and she was a fat lady. Desperately screaming, she reached out her arms and men tried to pull her out of the opening but she was just too large.

The burning building finally caved in with a crash and she died in the flames.

If you will please pardon the pun, “The past is a bucket of ashes.”

Peckham Industries contributed $50,000 to the purchase of the property, which had been in the Cunningham family for 150 years.

“You’ve taken the destiny of the land in your own hands,” said Jerry Delaney from the Northern Forest Center. “This is the best way to manage a forest in a community taking the forest and doing what is best for (the community).”

Peckham said his family has been in Chestertown for almost 50 years, and called the local management of natural resources “incredible.”

Cunningham expressed personal satisfaction in knowing the family forest was now becoming a public recreation area.

“I am please the land will bring peace and joy to so many people,” Cunningham said. ■

Trades work highlighted at NWCS program Work available in North Country, but investment required

CHESTERTOWN | Trying to find a tradesman in the Adirondacks is getting to be more of a challenge than some residents would like.

Coupled with concerns that young people are leaving the area to find work, the Chestertown Rotary Club sponsored a trades and employment opportunities program held at the North Warren Central School on Nov. 30.

Tony Traverni, Chestertown Rotary president, said the club invited representatives from nine separate trades to set up tables at the school and provide information about careers in the trades to students and the public.

“We annually provide scholarships to students, but we haven’t done anything for kids who aren’t going to college,” Traverni said.

“One of the members is familiar with the trades, and we said why not invite some people up to talk about apprenticeships.”

The Rotary invited representatives from the plumbers union, electrical workers, masons, carpenters, painters and others to take part in a literal “trade show” for introducing their crafts.

The Rotary also invited two local employers — D.A. Collins Construction and Spectrum — to set up tables. Traverni said the program could draw young people from ages 16 to 30.

“I was talking to some unions, and most people in apprenticeships these days are 25 years old,” Traverni said.

The Trades and Employment Opportunities Program was not intended to be a job fair, and the representatives were not at the school to hire anyone — only to provide in-

formation about their trades.

“We thought providing this information would help the area in the long run,” Traverni said. “If you are not retaining young people in the area your economic future is bleak.”

APPRENTICESHIPS ARE AN INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE

Jeff Kellogg, who was born and raised in North Creek, was a young person who learned a trade, left the area, and returned to his hometown.

Now a business representative with International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 158, Kellogg entered the construction field, stating his career as a welder for Barton’s Mines when they were building Ruby Mountain. He next moved to Albany to work in a quarry, and that is where he started working with Operating Engineers Local 158.

There is work for operating engineers in the North Country, Kellogg said, saying he is the IUOE representative for the workers

at Peckham Industries in Chestertown.

“They work there because there are good benefits and the pay is good,” Kellogg said.

The apprenticeship program for operating engineers is directed the State of New York, and an individual has travel to Albany where the training facility is located and pay for training.

“There is a lot of classroom work and then getting out on the equipment. But as the saying goes, you’ve got to spend money to make money,” he said.

According to Kellogg, a heavy equipment operator can make as much money as he is willing to work for — over $100,000 per year if he or she puts in the time — and they must be willing to travel.

He said he had 165 union operating engineers working on the Hudson River dredge project that finished about a year and a half ago, and he also supplied operators for the wind tower project near the Canadian border. ■

Town board takes no action on muskrat trapping Citizen requested to trap critters on town property

CHESTERTOWN | The Chester Town Board turned down a request from a citizen to allow muskrat trapping in a creek behind Town Hall.

The board took no action Nov. 14 on a request to be allowed to trap muskrats on town property.

“We don’t have a policy on it,” supervisor Craig Leggett said.

Town attorney Mark Schachner said the question of allowing trapping should be directed to the town’s insurance carrier. The town board deferred any action on the request.

BUSINESS BIDS

The board accepted bids for various services and goods at the meeting, including a bid from Buckman’s Family Fuel for various fuel at different markups over wholesale prices.

Buckman’s bid 22 cents per gallon for fuel, kerosene and diesel, and 18 cents for heating oil for town hall.

The board accepted a bid for senior transport services from Warren Hamilton Community Action Agency for $11,730 for 51 trips.

The average number of persons riding per trip is about five, Leggett said.

Buckman’s and the Warren Hamilton Community Action Agency were the only bidders in those categories.

The board received two bids for premium hardwood pellets for the town’s new biomass boiler: one from Curran Renew-

able Energy for $240 per ton with a maximum delivery of 16 tons of premium hardwood pellets, and the accepted bid from Vincent Heating and Fuel of $219 per ton with a 25 ton capacity delivered with 72 hour’s notice and no minimum.

The board accepted two applications for septic variances and set a pubic hearing date for both on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m.

The board took no action on a third.

The board heard from Zach Monroe of Winchip Engineering for the Corpas application at 5493 State Route 8 in Chestertown, a site with multiple septic systems.

Monroe said the application includes the creation of two separate septic systems, and the application request numerous variance requests for a system not meeting the separation requirements for a steam and pond, and within 100 feet of a well.

A second application at for the Angell property at 114 E. Hudson River Dr., Chestertown (Riverside) was deemed complete and a public hearing scheduled for Dec. 12.

The Angell application was for a replacement septic system a new holding tank and pumping station. The applicant is asking for a separation variance to the Hudson River for 46 feet, where 100 is required.

A third application for Lipponcott at 13 Schroon River Forest, Chestertown, was presented by Matt Huntington of Schoder Rivers Associate, Queensbury. Huntington said the project includes an existing 1,000-gallon tank that was installed previously, to which the applicant proposed added an additional 1,000-gallon holding tank.

The applicant was asking for a variance for separation distance from Sunset Creek, asking to approve 37 feet where 100 is required. Leggett said the applicant should also apply for a variance for the existing tank. ■

RESOLUTIONS: Resolution 1 adopted an extension of the Cold War Veterans property tax exemption.

Resolution 2 accepted contracts with the North Warren Chamber of Commerce for publicity; with North Warren Emergency Squad in the amount of $95,000; Chestertown Fire District for $5,000; the Riverside Volunteer Fire Company for $7,000; and the North Creek Fire Company for $30,000.

Resolution 3 reviewed septic variance applications and set public hearings.

Resolution 4 rescinded a well-drilling award, and awarded the contract to Aztech Well Drilling as requested by the Warren County Planning Department in order to meet Minorities and Women Business Enterprises (MWBE) requirements in the grant.

Resolution 5 approved a traffic assessment by the AGFTA for the Loon Lake Beach areas.

Resolution 6 approved the purchase of a John Deere 644K loader for $120,000.

Resolution 7 authorized a grant application and RFP for an electric vehicle charging station.

Resolution 8 accepted the resignation of Kathe Wickham from the Library Board of Trustees.

Resolution 9 authorized an MOA with CSEA for health benefits.

Resolution 10 appointed Jeremy Little as deputy zoning administrator.

Resolution 11 was related to discussion of muskrat trapping.

Warrensburg, Johnsburg students tapped for NYSSMA WARRENSBURG | The Warrensburg Central School District offered its congratulations to three students for being selected to the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Area All-State Music Festival.

Carter Germain, a baritone vocalist, Mariah Nissen, first soprano vocalist, and James Cunniffe, trumpet, were selected by virtue of their musicianship at the NYSSMA solo competition.

Band director Denise Foster and vocal music teacher James Corriveau both expressed

how proud they are of their students who had to compete with students from much larger school districts, saying the students’ accomplishment speaks volumes of their talent.

“The Area All-State Festival is a collection of a region’s finest music students that rehearse and perform together in a grand concert,” Corriveau said.

Students must score high in the NYSSMA solo competition to qualify with the highest scoring students being selected.

Warrensburg Central School students participate in Zone 7, which lines the east border of New York from Albany and Rensselaer counties up to Hamilton.

The festival is a two-day event featuring orchestra, band, jazz band and chorus.

Each group will work with special guest conductors in demanding rehearsals with a concert on the second day. Corriveau said Saratoga High School has hosted the Zone 7 festival for as long as he can remember.

JOHNSBURG’S FULLER SELECTED

Fuller, who scored a 96 out of 100 as a 10th grader, was the only Johnsburg student accepted this year.

“That’s a really good score,” Cole said. “He is a great student, at the top of his class, and had a lead role in the musical.”

Fuller is involved in the JCS pop singers and jazz band, was named to the all-county jazz band, and all-county concert band, for trumpet, and as a member of the all-county select chorus. Fuller was also named to the Castleton University (Vt.) honors choir.

“This keep our little school on the map,” Cole said. ■

Burghers win Saranac tourney in season’s debut

SARANAC LAKE | The WarrensburgBolton Wrestling team made a powerful statement Dec. 2, as they won the championship of the Nate Wood Memorial Tournament.

Hosted by Saranac Lake High School, the tournament featured six wrestling teams spanning the Northeast, from the Adirondacks to Maine.

Saranac Lake placed second in the tourney, and Noble High School of Berwick, Maine took third place.

Burgher Wrestling Coach Mark Trapasso noted that Warrensburg-Bolton took fourth place last year, and the Dec. 2 victory — the team’s debut for 2017-18 — was the Burghers’ second championship in this tournament in the last 25 years.

“We had a great day. We had contributions from all our wrestlers,” he said. “This was a much better start to our season than I thought we’d have.”

Seven Burgher wrestlers won individual championships, and seven placed second and three placed third. Altogether, Warrensburg earned 428 points. Saranac Lake scored 392 and Noble had 308.

were eighth graders Tanner McKenna at 99 pounds and Dylan Winchell at 106 pounds; juniors Zack Davis at 138 pounds, Nolan McNeill at 182 pounds and Chris Wilson at 195 pounds; plus seniors Jack Binder at 220 pounds and Gary Hill at 285 pounds.

Trapasso said Zack Davis won the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award after he beat two-time state place-finisher Bryce Smith from Saranac Lake in a come-frombehind victory. With a few seconds left in the match, Davis got a takedown which improved his score from 2-3 to 4-3 to defeat Smith.

“It was a great match and a huge win for us,” Trapasso said. “Zack is a very experienced, high-level wrestler.”

Burghers placing second individually were freshman Zach Carpenter at 120 pounds, senior Trevor Winchell at 132 pounds, freshman Hunter McKenna at 145 pounds, junior Chris Simpson at 160 and senior Dan Monthony at 170.

Placing third were Jacob Johnson at 195 pounds, Jacob Clear at 220 and Donald Carpenter at 285.

Trapasso commented on some of the place finishers. He said Tanner McKenna was an “athletic, promising rookie; that Winchell was “tough, and Chris Wilson was “very successful” in several sports, including football. The coach added that Nolan McNeill was the “dark horse” in the lineup who was

Trapasso noted the strength of the Burghers highest four or five weight classes,

noting that the deep roster of talented wrestlers in the heavier levels of the team give each other strenuous, challenging workouts, boosting all of their prospects.

“These guys are tough workout partners, and they push each other hard,” he said. ■

WarEagle wrestlers start season showing strength

LAKE GEORGE | The Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George Wrestling Team has enjoyed a solid start of their 2017-18 season, placing high in a prestigious tournament as well as beating a large school’s team that has a long history of producing talented athletes.

On Dec. 2, the WarEagles placed fourth — out of 19 teams — in the annual Bill Andersen Memorial Tournament sponsored by Cicero-North High School in Syracuse.

Two WarEagle wrestlers won individual championship titles: Logan Duers in the 152-pound weight class, and Richie Conte in the 182 pound category.

Duers pinned Marshall Bruggeman of Canastota in 5 minutes; Conte won his match by a technical fall after it was halted when Conte outscored Austin Kellogg of South Jefferson 14-3.

At 195 pounds,Mike Sutliff secured second place 195 pounds; Cody York placed third at 160; William Mitcham secured fifth

at 285 pounds. Three other WarEagles placed in the tourney: Justin Hoffman was seventh at 160 pounds and Cameron Duers seventh at 145, plus Nick Lashway, eighth at 138.

This was the WarEagles’ best showing ever in the tournament, which hosts schools that traditionally have very strong wrestling programs. The WarEagles’ top ranking in the tourney to date had been 8th place.

On Nov. 29, the WarEagles had another remarkable accomplishment: They defeated the wrestling team from Hudson Falls High — which has a laudable tradition in the sport — by a dominating score of 57-21.

WarEagles co-coach Larry Rounds said he was pleased with how the season has started out.

“We’re excited for this year,” Rounds said. “Hudson Falls has some talented wrestlers, but ours performed a little bit better.”

Rounds said his wrestlers had earned their wide-margin victory.

“Our athletes have been working very hard, and good things are now coming to them because of this hard work.”

WARREN COUNTY | AllStars for several fall sports were announced this week, and the roster of awardees include athletes from northern Warren County.

Named Section II Girls Soccer All-Stars were Lake George players Sarah Kohls, Kylie Mann, and Gabby Marchello of Lake George; plus Madelyn Pratt and Caitlyn Speranza of Bolton-Warrensburg.

Awarded First Team All-Stars for the Adirondack/Wasaren Field Hockey League were Sydney Gagnpon and Eliza Brown for North Warren; and Mairina Callahan, Abigail Smith, Sara Langworthy and Meghan Hughes of Warrensburg.

Rounds complimented all his wrestlers, but voiced special praise for Logan Duers, a junior.

“Logan wrestled one of Hudson Falls’ strongest wrestlers, but achieved a 15-point lead and got a technical fall,” Rounds said. “This caught people by surprise.”

He said he was really pleased with the outcome of the meet, and how the WarEagles only lost two matches.

“I expect good things this season,” he said. “It’s going to be a fun year.” ■

Warrensburg Burghers aim for turnaround season

WARRENSBURG | If the core players of the Warrensburg Boys Basketball team execute with the aggressiveness, resolve and skill they played on the gridiron this year, they’ll be in contention for a league division championship.

A half-dozen of these football players, who threw and pulled down passes, dodged defenders and outsmarted most of their opponents, are now looking forward to competing on the hardwoods.

No less than eight players on last year’s basketball team are returning, including the two top scorers, Garry Ross with 10.3 points per game and Evan MacDuff, with 8.7 points per game. This duo also lead in rebounding, grabbing 5.6 and 7.5 per game respectively.

The Burgher dual-sports athletes include MacDuff, a quarterback this year who had such success with his smart ball-handling; John Kelly, a top receiver and kicker; Cole Lanfear, a leading running back, and Brandon Bailey, a tough tackler and tight end; and sophomore Jesse Griffin who contributed as a running back.

Their chemistry on the field will undoubt-

edly be helpful as the basketball team strives to achieve a winning season for the first year in a long time.

Anchoring the inside will be MacDuff and Bailey, both juniors. Against Johnsburg in the season opener, each of them scored gamehigh 13 points in the victory. Also, Seniors Garry Ross, Cole Lanfear and John Kelly have shown their ability to score and handle the ball with expertise, basketball and football coach Mike Perrone said.

“We will also look for Senior Thor Larson, junior Peyton Olden and sophomore Jesse Griffin to provide key minutes and shoot well,” Perrone added.

“Varsity newcomers Dan Kelly, Charlie Weick and Jesse Norris will help provide depth and balance for this season’s roster,” he continued, noting that the team has a solid combination of post players and guards in providing that balance.

“We’re looking for solid defense to anchor us throughout the season as well as unselfish basketball and balanced scoring, Perrone added.

The three-year coach said that the core players of his team have been playing AAU and summer basketball for years. In addition,

contributions from every player throughout the season,” he said.

At a recent practice, Perrone stepped to the sidelines after spending a half-hour on the court — driving toward the basket, heaving the ball in a no-look pass to one of his players, leaping for rebounds and scrambling for a loose ball or two—­all while yelling out advice on court strategy.

“There are definitely things we need to get better at, but at Friday’s scrimmage, we saw some really good things,” he said. “We aim to be competitive in every game as we progress through the year.” ■

they’ve been lifting weights every day through several seasons, Perrone said.

“We’re starting to see some big results from these workouts. Our athletes are a lot faster and stronger,” he said, predicting that his players will be tough and determined as they execute a turnaround from the 4-16 record in basketball last year.

The renewed enthusiasm in Burgher basketball this year has prompted 25 students to turn out for JV and Varsity tryouts, many more than in recent years, which bodes well for the future.

As for this year, Perrone has an air of confidence.

CHESTERTOWN | After graduating four seniors, North Warren Lady Cougars varsity head coach P.J. Hogan is trying to fill some gaps in the lineup, but he believes he has a group of talented, hard-working girls who will keep North Warren in every game this season.

McCauliffe said trust between the players will be a big part of the system.

“Right now we have some hesitation and questions about assignments and responsibilities, as they grow more comfortable with it we should become better and better,” he said. “We want to continue to get better and be competitive in every game we play.”

The Lady Orange will be led by point guard Maria Black and combo player Lillian Dechene, who will be looking to break the 1,000-point scoring barrier later this season. ■

WarEagle wrestlers are setting high goals

LUZERNE | At the beginning of the year, the coaches of the Hadley-Luzerne-Lake George Wrestling team ask their wrestlers to write down their goals, WarEagles cocoach Mike Varmette said.

“If their answer is anything less than a state or national championship, we tell them, ‘Look, you are selling yourself short.’”

Setting high goals, along with strenuous workouts, intensive practices and knowledgable coaching, have all lead to the success of the WarEagles wrestling program.

Last season, the WarEagles sent four wrestlers to the state championship tournament — Jason Hoffman at 170 pounds, Gideon Jardine at 132, Mike Sutliff at 182, and Cody York at 145.

Sutliff and York are back for 2017-18, doubtlessly to be advancing into the state championship competition and regional tournaments with several other WarEagles joining them in their quest.

“We’re going to have four or five kids who will be wrestling at the state level,” predicted Larry Rounds, coach of the WarEagles and its forerunner, the Hadley-Luzerne wrestling team, since 2002.

Varmette echoed the thought.

“We’re going to have a really good team this year — We’re going to be contenders in both the Sectionals and the Class C tournament,” he said.

Photo by Thom Randall Varmette said that Rich Conte of Lake George, who is returning after an injury last year, will be a top contender in the 2018 post-season tournaments.

“Rich is working hard, he’s now healthy, and he’s going to be excellent,” Varmette said.

Among those also likely to have stellar seasons is William Mitcham — who placed 5th last season in the Section II tournament, Rounds said.

He said several other wrestlers are showing particular dedication to the sport: senior Nick Lashway, veteran freshman Justin Hoffman, and junior Gary Spotswood, and he said.

“Nick is a tough, scrappy wrestler with a lot of fight in him —We’re looking for him to do well this year,” Rounds said. “And Gary is very passionate about the sport, and he’s broken into the lineup.”

Varmette said that other wrestlers with high potential include Colby Hoolihan at 195 pounds, Colin McCabe at 152 or 145 pounds, Cameron Collins at 132, and 120pounder Quinn Cardone — who is returning after a hiatus from the sport.

“Quinn is like a buzz saw when he wrestles — I’m looking forward to his matches,” Varmette said.

Also joining the talented roster are Logan and Cameron Duers — competing in the 145 and 152 pound weght classes. These brothers moved to Texas a year or two ago, but returned this year. Their father coaches WarEagles modified wrestling.

“We have a great lineup this year,” Varmette said.

Varmette added that one of the secrets of the WarEagles’ success is that they teach and drill the basic attack moves, as those are the ones used most successfully in winning NCAA and state tournament matches.

“We stick to the basics — we drill them, drill them and drill them,” he said. They also stress a healthy lifestyle which promotes strength and mental acuity.

“Our wrestlers eat right, we hydrate them, and they’re doing everything right,” Varmette said.

This season’s opening meet against Hudson Falls — a 57-21 victory for the WarEagles — demonstrated the WarEagles’ potential for 2017-18.

“I’m very excited for this year,” Rounds said. ■

LAKE GEORGE | Stymied from reaching their potential last season by injuries, the Lake George Girls Basketball Team has set its sights on maintaining health as they’re aiming for an achievement-filled year.

The talent-laden 2016-17 team won the overall Adirondack League title — but their season ended several games later with a disappointing loss in the Section II semifinals against perennial contender Hoosic Valley. The team compiled an 18-5 record over the year.

letes, including Lacey Cormie — the school’s all-time leading top 3-point shooter — as well as Alauna Wright, Nicole Nolin and Rachel Shambo.

From that team, a number of highly skilled, accomplished athletes are returning, however.

At the top of the list is New York State All-Star 6’2” center Graceann Bennett, a junior being recruited by a number of Division I colleges, who returns after undergoing knee surgery last spring. She’s won league and regional MVP and All-Star awards — too many to keep track of since she started playing late in 7th grade.

Getting ready for a practice recently, Bennett said the Warriors experienced formidable challenges last year on their way to the Adirondack League Championship.

“There were great teams in the league last year, including North Warren with Madasyn Bush — and Warrensburg also was very talented,” Bennett said.

“We are very inexperienced this year with only two players having a year’s experience on the varsity level,” Showers said.

“We are striving to become fundamentally sound with our preseason workouts. The goal for this year is for everyone on the team to improve each day. I want the team to enjoy the season and become better players.”

Showers said the team is working well together, and some players have been stepping up.

“Kate Wimberly is a freshman who has shown potential the first part of the season,” he said. “I am looking forward to see her progression throughout her career.” ■

NORTH CREEK | Wanting to use their athleticism, the Lady Jaguars varsity basketball team is readying to control the pace this season.

“We want to be a running fast break team, so we are working on conditioning, drills focusing on fast breaking,” said first year coach Randy LaFountain. “Seniors Megan Bacon and Taylor Dwyer and Junior Khaleah Cleveland have a lot of experience and are very athletic. We should have plenty of speed.”

The team also returns freshman guard Aileen Stevens to the roster.

“We want to get the younger players up to speed and our bigger players are our young players,” LaFountain said. “We also need to improve on our overall skills and our outside shooting.”

Balance is key to Bolton success in new season

BOLTON | The Bolton Central School boys varsity basketball team is essentially the same as last year’s squad, head coach Ryan Volkmann is looking for different results.

After losing only one player to graduation (Tyler Dawson), Volkmann said no new players have been added to the varsity team, which is still made up of mainly underclassmen.

“We should be competitive in our division,” Volkmann said. “I would like to double our win total.”

“There are some teams that are more talented, but we should be considerably stronger than last year and ready to compete with everyone,” Volkmann said.

The Eagles were 4-16 in the 2017-2018 season, and Volkmann is looking for team balance to helping Bolton come up with more wins.

Volkmann will be looking for leadership from seniors Jacob Beebe and R.J. DeMeo, and junior Adam Seamans, three of Bolton’s starting five, plus one.

Volkmann said Seamans would be also be

providing leadership as he runs the offense from the point guard position. He said sophomore Kevin Neacy has the ability to score on his own or create scoring opportunities for teammates. Junior Craig Wholey is a shooter and a scoring threat, especially from 3-point range.

Volkmann is looking for senior Michael Gavin, at an even 6-feet, to be providing the Eagles with rebounding to provide more scoring opportunities. Volkmann hopes the combined talents and efforts of this year’s Eagle varsity basketball squad will help them meet their goal.

In terms of competition from the opposition, Volkmann said Schroon Lake and Crown Point should present the Eagles with their biggest challenge.

“Schroon Lake and Crown Point are looking strong again. I would not sleep on Wells either,” he said.

BOLTON | The Lady Eagles will need to have eight strong players in order to stay competitive in the MVAC Southern Division, said Bolton Central School varsity girls basketball coach Luke Schweickert.

“We need to stay injury and sickness free to contend,” Schweickert said.

The Lady Eagles return three starters - two from last year’s team, which was 11-1 in division play. The Bolton girls, 15-8 overall, advanced in the Section 7 Tournament by beating Westport on the road, before losing to eventual state tournament opponent Moriah in Sectional Semifinals.

Another player who will be a key to the Eagles’ on-court presence is senior Ashley Connery, who is returning to the line-up after missing her entire junior season with a torn ACL. “Ashley is our tone-setter in practice and a great leader,” Schweickert said. “We are excited to have her back on the court this year.”

The Lady Eagles are also going to feature some fresh faces. Schweichert counts freshmen Kate Van Auken and Maria Baker as a returning starters. Van Auken was a key scorer last season as an eighth grader. Baker and Chelsea Speranza both started for their eighth grade varsity team.

“Maria Baker is a very solid guard who helped us control the ball versus so many older opponents. She’s amongst the toughest kids I have ever coached,” Schweickert said.

Schweickert said this year Schroon Lake is a very formidable opponent with a lot of depth, great shooters, and they defend for four quarters.

“Crown Point is a physically tough group who never quits. Their forward Hannah Palmer is as tough as they come,” he said.

Schweickert said Johnsburg has one of the best players in the league in Kahleah Cleveland, calling the team “tough and resilient.”

Lady Burghers are young, but experienced

WARRENSBURG | A remarkable renaissance has occurred in recent years with girls basketball at Warrensburg High, and sports observers anticipate that the trend will be continuing this season.

Last year’s team won Division 2 of the Adirondack League and they advanced to the Section II quarterfinals, compiling an overall win-loss record of 17-4.

While 10 players — including some outstanding athletes — graduated in the past two years, some highly motivated and skilled players have stepped up and taken their place.

Although the Burghers lost defensive powerhouse Britanny Frasier to graduation — in addition to standouts Madison Sheridan, Zoey Morgan and Starr Hughes — the players remaining are quite talented.

Returning to the lineup is the team’s 2016-17 high scorer Megan Hughes, a 5’10” junior forward/guard who is a three-year player for the Burghers. Hughes drives to the basket well, and is a savvy rebounder.

“We’ll be asking Megan to provide leadership, experience and scoring for the team

this year,” coach Scott Smith said.

Also returning is senior forward Kayla Raymond, a key element in the team’s success last year. Smith said he’s expecting her to provide leadership.

“We’ll need Kayla to be a strong interior defender this season,” he said.

Point guard sophomore Hope Boland, the team’s primary ball handler, also returns.

Last year — just a freshman — she was a pivotal element in some crucial victories.

Already this year, Boland has proven her gutsy athleticism — she was named MVP in the Mark Beson Tournament, which the Burghers won in their 2017-18 season debut.

“She has great court vision and has a knack for finding the open player — and she’s developed a nice outside shot,” Smith said of Boland.

Also returning are Danielle Baker and Dianne Curtis — both of whom missed significant time last season due to injury.

“We’ll be calling on Danielle and Dianne to provide rebounding, defense and scoring on the inside this year,” Smith said, noting that Baker has shown a lot of improvement this past month.

Newcomers Sara Langworthy, sisters Abigail and Aubrey Smith, Mikayla Rothermel, Madison Binder, and Mattie Castro

all join the Varsity team this season after a successful 15-3 JV season last year.

Langworthy, younger sister of record-shattering state All-Star Warrensburg grad Erin Langworthy, scored 18 points in the Beson tourney, her varsity debut.

“We are very excited for the upcoming season,” Smith said. “But we know that we have a lot of work ahead of us if we are to

compete in the Adirondack League and the ultra-competitive Class C for Sectionals.”

Smith said the team is young — its roster has only one senior — and only two starters remain after six athletes graduated in June.

“Our success this season will be determined by how quickly we can get some of more younger and inexperienced players prepared for the Varsity level,” he said. ■

Burgher wrestlers: talented veterans on a mission

WARRENSBURG | Armed with a deep roster of hardworking athletes and an impressive array regional championships won over the past two seasons, the WarrensburgBolton Wrestling Team is now aiming to attain a new goal: Competing as a team in the first-ever New York State Dual Meet Tournament, set for Jan. 27 at Onondaga Community College in central New York.

Until now, while most other high sports end with team competition at the state level, for wrestling it’s limited to individuals.

Last year, the Warrensburg-Bolton Wrestling Team won the Adirondack League Championship, the Section II Class

D team championship, and the overall Section II smallschool championship.

If the Burghers win such a trifecta again, they’d be a top choice for a post in the new state dual meet tourney.

Head Warrensburg-Bolton wrestling coach Mark Trapasso said he was optimistic about his team’s prospects this year.

“We’ve got a lot of veteran wrestlers returning, and if we stay healthy and continue to work hard, we’ll be at the top again, bringing back some serious hardware.”

Returning Class D Champions for the Burghers are seniors Gary Hill at 285 pounds and Jack Binder at 220, junior Nolan McNeill at 182, and freshman Hunter McKenna, wrestling this year at 145 after gaining about 30 pounds.

Hill and Binder also placed third in Section II; Wilson,

McNeill and Monthony each placed fifth in the Section, as did freshman Zach Carpenter at 120 pounds, as well as senior Greg Shambo, a tough, talented football running back, competing at 152 pounds.

“It’s a lot of fun to watch Shambo wrestle — you don’t know what he’ll do when you send him out on the mat,” Trapasso said. “He’s very aggressive, and in shape.”

Hill and several other Burghers are considered serious contenders for the state tournament.

These trophy winners are joined by junior Chris Wilson, who will be wrestling at around 160 pounds. He’s considered competitive and strong. At 138 pounds is junior Zach Davis, who is ranked high in the Section although he took a year off last year, Trapasso said.

“Zach is extra fast and tough,” he said.

At 132 is senior Trevor Winchell, a standout in football and a veteran wrestler, Trapasso said.

“He’ll win a ton of matches this year,” Trapasso said.

At 126 is sophomore Zach Shambo, who took third in Class D last season; and at 113 pounds is junior Dustin Reiter of Bolton who Trapasso said was “gritty” and “came on strong” last year.

At 106 is 8th grader Dylan Winchell, who was a Section II place finisher as a 7th grader.

At 99 pounds is his classmate Tanner McKenna, a newcomer to the team, who Trapasso said was “wrestling “extremely well,” in the local youth wrestling club.

“Tanner is going to win consistently for us, and we’re very excited about his future,” Trapasso said.

They are joined by talented teammates: seniors Donald Carpenter and Jacob Johnson; junior Colden Wells; sophomores Jacob Clear, Devon Millington and Ryan Vaughan; junior Michael Dougherty of Bolton; and freshmen Brodie Weiler, Isaac Wachunas, Raymond Wilbur and Robert Smith. All are expected to wrestle well and contribute to the team’s success, Trapasso said. ■

Staffed with veteran athletes, Warriors have high goals

LAKE GEORGE | Loaded with experienced players — and armed with the legendary Warrior will-to-win, the Lake George Basketball team has a promising season ahead.

Although two tough, energetic defenders graduated last June — Kalab Helms and Zeke Reynolds — the Warriors have a seasoned, balanced lineup ready for the challenges ahead, coach Dave Jones said.

“We’re getting back three starters who represent about 80 percent of our scoring,” he said. “Our team has a lot of experience this year, so we’re hoping to build off that.”

“Experience” is an understatement.

The three starters returning — Seniors Alex Jones and Caleb Scrime plus junior Mason Flatley — all three year veterans,

were on the team that clawed their way to the 2015-16 New York State Class C Championship, then took their 2016-17 campaign to the state finals, achieving state championship runner-up honors.

They are joined by seniors Nick Hoffis and Jacab Helms, who also know first-hand that what it takes to grind out game after game and win the state’s top trophy.

But this isn’t the whole story.

The Warriors have acquired a new key element, rare in years past, despite winning two state championships and many Section II and Adirondack League titles in recent years.

They have height for 2017-18.

North Warren rebuilding boys basketball after graduations

CHESTERTOWN | The North Warren Varsity boys basketball team is looking at rebuilding year after losing several key players to graduation.

“We lost three seniors — Haden Smith, Joe Sapienza and Patrick Terry — that was about 60 percent of our offense,” said boys varsity head coach Jeremy Whipple, “so I would say we are rebuilding.”

Still, expectations are high among the players and coaches, who all think it will be a good year.

The Cougars are counting on two returning starters — senior Steve Monroe and junior Jack Buckman — to help them compete in the Adirondack League - Small School Division.

The Cougars finished with an overall record

of 11-11 last season (7-9 in the division), and would like to improve on that position. They hope to combine the experience of their returning starters with some newer talent in a yet-to-be-determined line-up.

Whipple is counting on Monroe, a knock-down shooting guard in his third year on varsity, to step up as a team leader at both ends of the floor.

“He has to be an emotional leader as well.

This is his senior year and he wants to go out on a good note,” Whipple said.

Whipple said Buckman, a 6’2” forward, is going to have to be the Cougars’ best interior defender and pull down 10 to 15 rebounds per game. Buckman is the most experienced bigger man on the court for North Warren.

“We’re probably one of the smallest teams in the league. We are average or a touch below as far as size goes,” Whipple said.

The Cougars might also have to look at freshman Tanner Dunkley (6’3”, 250-260) for some inside presence. Dunkley is 6’3” and about 250 or 260 pounds, and can score around the basket, defend, and get rebounds.

Whipple said he is counting on junior guard Joe Phelps to be the team’s best defender, as well as to make good decisions on offense and to be a leader, and junior point guard Brandon Olden, a first-year varsity point guard and he is going to have to defend, rebound, and initiate offense.

As far as the fifth starter, along with Monroe, Buckman, Phelps and Olden, Whipple said the fifth starting position is still up in the air.

“They are still battling it out,” he said.

Whipple said freshman Anthony Girard has a shot if he shows what he can do at the varsity level.

Becker scored 20 points and 17 points respectively in the two games.

Scrime, one of the leading scorers in 2016-17, said Becker is a welcome addition to the Warrior lineup.

Bennett said this week she was feeling fully recovered from her knee surgery; ready to play ball.

“Going forward, we’ll need to make sure we stay healthy, and just work as hard as we can,” she said. “We are very driven this year — we have goals, and we’re going to work toward them.”

Tefft his said his team was developing chemistry following Bennett’s return.

“The strengths of our team? We’re relatively quick and we’re athletic,” he said. “We’ve got a great group of kids — they work hard. Well get out there, do the best we can, and have fun. ■

Flatley, who is 6-foot-three without shoes on, said Becker will add to the team’s defense as well.

“Not only do we have a lot more offensive threats this year, but we’ll be stepping up our defense too,” he said.

Alex Jones, a crafty player with a deadeye outside shot who has been a prime Warrior scorer for years, said his team has balance and has been playing with strong chemistry. Also, he predicted that Kagan Helms will be a key defender on the team.

Flatley agreed with Alex Jones about how the players, after working together for three or more years, can anticipate each others’ moves well.

“We can find each other on the floor,” he said. “We know each others’ game, and we use that to best of our ability.”

Scrime echoed the point, noting that in a recent scrimmage, the Warriors beat Queensbury — a far larger school.

“We’re sharing the ball well this year,” he said.

Coach Jones said his players were working hard in practice, and they had high goals for the year.

“Our team’s attitude has been fantastic,” he said. “Our players are proud of the team’s legacy, but their anxious to see if they can get back to where they were.” ■

Hogan is returning some talent from last season. Junior Sydney Gagnon is returning as the starting point guard who Hogan said is very good on defense.

“She is a great defender and floor leader. Sydney will never be out-worked on a court,” Hogan said.

Also returning is area senior guard Alyssa Kramar, who Hogan said is a good scorer and who will fill in nicely alongside Gagnon in the back court, and senior Brooke French, who will be playing inside for the Lady Cougars.

“Brooke will be playing inside for us but has very good range on her jump shot,” Hogan said.

Junior Jaclyn Urtz is a tough defender and rebounder who has good touch around the basket, Hogan said.

And the coach will be counting on senior Chloe Jones to play a key role in helping the Lady Cougars replace the scoring they lost to graduation.

Juniors Eliza Brown and Olivia Viele will need to contribute on the boards and underneath offensively and defensively. ■
