State awards $200,000 for broadband efforts By Thom Randall

ATHOL — Thurman’s local government has finally received reimbursement for the state grant bankrolling their “white space” broadband access project that has brought wireless internet connectivity to dozens of households. Thurman was awarded a state Connect NY Broadband Grant of $200,000 in 2013 to broadcast data signals over unused electromagnetic frequencies between old analog television channels. But the grant payment took years to materialize. The public-private partnership to bring broadband to the remote mountainous area received a statewide award for its success in bringing affordable, reliable internet access to Thurman. The project also received national attention for its potential to provide broadband for similar rural, sparsely settled communities across the nation. >> See WHITE SPACE | pg. 13
