» Regional Council Cont. from pg. 1 Top items included in the North Country Regional Economic Development Council (NCREDC)’s proposal are machinery upgrades at manufacturing facilities across the region, including International Paper (Ticonderoga) and General Composites (Willsboro), Bionique Testing Laboratories and Carpe Insectae (Saranac Lake).

Requests range from the low five figures to $1.7 million for IP to upgrade several pieces of equipment — including the modification of a superheater and production upgrades that the NCREDC says will allow the plant to be more competitive.

Major hotel projects are also being eyed.

NCREDC is seeking $2 million for the construction of a 80-room hotel at the Plattsburgh International Airport — part of a constellation of ongoing state- and federal-funded upgrades at the facility — and $5.9 million for the construction of a proposed $19.6 million four-star hotel in Blue Mountain Lake replete with high-end camping known as “glamping.”

As part of a $1.8 million project, the North Creek-Indian Lake Hut-to-Hut Circuit Lodging is eying $365,000 to establish a hut-to-hut circuit in the central Adirondacks — including the construction of a 48-person “eco-lodge hostel.”

Boutique projects designed to drive tourism are also included in the application.

War Canoe Spirits Distillery is seeking $705,384 to establish a distillery and manufacturing operation with “tasting, dining, retail and event space” in Crown Point, a project applicants say will create six jobs.

And a start-up called Chicota, Inc. is seeking $199,000 to transform the former Dew Drop

Inn in downtown Saranac Lake into a “food experience” business, including bar and restaurant, short-stay apartments, cooking school and event space — a $2.2 million effort.

The Adirondack Public Observatory is seeking $300,000 for an expansion project.

Additional lower priority items include continuing to foster broad strategies for longer term projects.

For the Olympic Village, that includes keeping the region’s global sports brand competitive, including supporting a bid to host the 2021 Special Olympics World Games and upgrades to sporting venues.

In Plattsburgh, the strategy is to keep a sustained focus on developing a skilled workforce and transforming the region into a global manufacturing hub and transportation cluster leveraging its proximity to Canada.

In all, the 21 projects across the region — including in Watertown and Ogdensburg — represent a total proposed state investment of nearly $22 million, leveraging more than $100 million in private and other funding.

Collectively, the proposed projects will support the creation of 255 new jobs, 441 indirect jobs and the retention of 756 existing ones, according to the report NCREDC submitted to the state last week.

NCREDC Co-chair and President of the North Country Chamber of Commerce Garry Douglas said the set of projects is the best the group has mustered in three years.

“This year we are proud to report that we are nearing all of our strategic aims, having progressed steadily in a cumulative way each round,” Douglas said in a statement.

Development Council Initiative, the statesponsored program designed to offer a collaborative, community-driven approach to stimulate economic growth.

Each of the state’s 10 councils contain local experts and stakeholders from business, academia, local government and nongovernmental organizations.

Since 2011, the NCREDC has received $484 million through the program, including $10 million each to revitalize downtown Plattsburgh and Watertown.

Nearly 450 projects that are completed or in progress and have committed to create or retain over 6,530 jobs in the region.

A total of $4.6 billion has been invested since the program’s inception.

‘DISTRACTING ATTENTION’

The state is on track this year to award $800 million across all 10 regions, including up to $225 million in performance-based grants and tax credits from Empire State Development, and approximately $575 million from two dozen state agency programs.

While Gov. Andrew Cuomo has lauded the program as a departure from the secretive “pork barrel” spending of the past — “It’s a waste of

money, we did it for a lot of years, it failed,” he told Politico New York in February — the program has come scrutiny by lawmakers and fiscal watchdog groups as at best, overly optimistic and at worst, lacking oversight and tainted by scandals that have marred other economic initiatives, including the Buffalo Billion.

Critics have also criticized the program as taxpayer-financed subsidies to private businesses and developers.

“Whether they involve financing an enormous, complex $750 million manufacturing plant — or, on the other hand, distributing five- and six-figure grants to countless craft breweries, farm distilleries and ice cream shops and other trendy micro-enterprises across the state — government economic development programs are no substitute for a better business climate,” testified E.J. McMahon, president of the Empire Center, at a state Assembly Economic Development Oversight Hearing in 2016.

“Unfortunately, more often than not, economic development programs actually serve to distract attention from the state’s failure to improve that climate.”

The 2017 REDC awards will be announced before the end of the year. ■

ELIZABETHTOWN | People come to the Adirondacks to escape from urban woes.

But the growth of smog in the High Peaks is more likely than you think, say environmental advocacy groups as the latest effort to roll back Obama-era environmental regulations clicked into place last week.

Air pollution generated in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kentucky is carried by upper air currents across the mountaintops of the Adirondack Park, leading to smog, a problem more associated with urban areas.

“At 3,500 to 4,000 feet, visitors could be breathing air as bad as it is in Times Square,” said John Sheehan, a spokesman for the Adirondack Council.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt last week signed a measure to repeal the Clean Power Plan, a policy to curb greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired power plants.

Green groups blasted the decision, citing the potential disastrous effects on the Adirondack Park, rolling back years of progress after the 1990 Clean Air Act led to recovery from some of the worst acid rain damage in the nation, killing trees and poisoning fish.

“This is an enormous setback for U.S. policy on climate change and will have negative impacts in the Adirondacks as progress on significant reductions in acid rain over the past 20 years may be lost,” said Peter Bauer, executive director of Protect the Adirondacks.

Not only will the repeal of the Clean Power Plan — which assigned each state a goal for reducing emissions — jeopardize the protection of the Adirondack ecosystem, but so will projected budget cuts at the EPA, including programs to monitor acid rain.

The region’s largest green group is leaning on Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-Willsboro) and her connection with House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) to ensure the Adirondack Park isn’t left twisting in the wind.

“We’re really going to count on them to move forward on this budget proposal and make sure EPA’s acid rain program continues,” Sheehan said. “She needs to do this.”

STALLED

The Clean Power Plan is a set of rules that established goals for reducing carbon dioxide emissions from fossil-fueled electricity plants through a national trading system.

While the initiative had never taken effect after being blocked by the courts, pollution control equipment had already been installed at 36 midwestern coal-burning power plants, Sheehan said in an email.

But the equipment hadn’t been turned on, which is why the Adirondack Council joined the State of Maryland and a coalition of environmental and health organizations in a lawsuit against the EPA. “Turning on the equipment in warm weather — as is required under the Clean Air Act — would save lives and prevent environmental damage by reducing smog and acid rain significantly,” said Sheehan.

Overall, the initiative was expected to reduce acid rain an additional 25 percent in the northeast by 2030, the council said.

State officials have joined U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both Democrats, in condemning the rollbacks: Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the decision “reckless” and said New York will continue to be a green energy leader, citing state efforts to achieving 50 percent of electricity from renewables by 2030.

who have pledged to meet those goals.

“Climate change is a profound threat to our planet, and it cannot be wished away by denial,” Cuomo said.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said he would sue the EPA over what he said was the agency missing a statutory deadline for designating areas of the country impacted by unhealthy levels of ground-level ozone.

“One in three New Yorkers are breathing dangerous levels of smog pollution,” Schnei-

derman said. “By ignoring critical deadlines for cutting this pollution, the Trump EPA is turning its back on the health and safety of millions of Americans.”

Repealing the Clean Power Plan is not a done deal: The EPA is required to go through a formal public comment period before being finalized.

The agency must also offer a replacement rule.

» Stefanik Cont. from pg. 4 rollback of the Clean Power Plan are two of the more headline-grabbing issues when it comes to the Trump administration’s dismantling of environmental safeguards.

But the administration is also weighing deep budget cuts to the EPA. While President Trump initially proposed a 31 percent reduction in the agency’s budget, the Republican-led House has softened the blow.

But the House 2018 budget resolution includes a 16 percent cut in the EPA’s Science & Technology budget, the source of the lake and stream chemistry testing and air-quality monitoring grants for the Adirondacks.

“While this is only half of the cut Trump’s executive budget proposed, we have been assured it would result in deep cuts to the research and monitoring grants,” Sheehan said.

This includes about $6.8 million in annual grant funding for the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation, the Ray Brook-based agency that has conducted monthly testing in dozens of local lakes since the 1980s to monitor the impacts of acid rain on soil and water.

NYS Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) awards the grants and oversees the research conducted in the park.

While the agency, said Sheehan, is confident it can still do a good job of monitoring whether clean air laws are working, the cuts would still hurt — particularly considering funding has been kept flat for the past quarter-century.

“So the state has slowly assumed more of the financial burden for what should be entirely federally funded research,” he said.

With adequate federal funding, NYSERDA could focus more work on methods to restore the park’s ecosystems once federal pollution controls cause the damage to stop, Sheehan said.

LONG HISTORY OF SUPPORT

As federal lawmakers continue to try to reach a budget deal, Sheehan and Adirondack Council Executive Director William Janeway traveled to Washington, D.C., where they met with members of the North Country delegation, including Rep. Paul Tonko (D-Amsterdam) and former army secretary and Rep. John McHugh, who now works as a lobbyist.

The group views Stefanik as critical in their efforts to save the research grant funding.

“Stefanik has alerted the leaders of key committees that the acid rain monitoring money is important to her district,” Sheehan said.

But whether that will translate into a funding restoration remains unknown, Sheehan said.

There’s been a long history of Republican support for clean water in the North Country, said Sheehan, citing efforts by former U.S. Rep. Gerry Solomon, a Republican who chaired hearings on acid rain despite being among the staunchest conservatives of his time.

“He was also a sportsman and knew acid rain was real, even if the chemistry of how it damaged soils, trees and fish was still being discovered at the time,” Sheehan said.

Legislation was imminent, but was derailed following the Sept. 11 attacks.

“Now we’re just in a position to hang on to what we have in terms of research and monitoring money,” said Sheehan.

SHIFTING GEARS

Following a 2015 vote in which she voted to reject EPA limits for coal-fueled power plants, Stefanik has repositioned herself as a GOP leader on green issues.

The second-term lawmaker is a member of the bipartisan House Climate Solutions Caucus and has discussed the need to develop clean and renewable energy in New York’s 21st Congressional District, including wind and hydropower, the subject of a hearing chaired last month by the lawmaker in her capacity as chairwoman of the Republican Policy Committee’s Millennial Task Force.

But Stefanik, a frequent critic of executive orders, ultimately walked a fine on the cancellation of the Clean Power Plan, an initiative she never supported.

Pruitt has said that the Obama administration “exceeded its legal authority” in creating the plan — and the lawmaker agrees.

“Congresswoman Stefanik believes President Obama was wrong to circumvent Congress with the Clean Power Plan,” Flanagin said. “When Congress is circumvented in the process, the policy can easily be undone from one Administration to the other. Congress, not federal bureaucrats, should set our national energy policy.”

Sheehan said environmentalists are also concerned over efforts to tap into new federal lands in an effort to revitalize the coal industry — including efforts to open the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming.

Flanagin did not directly respond when asked if Stefanik had a position on the potential reopening of that facility.

But he did refer a reporter to a House resolution sponsored by the lawmaker in March that calls for “using American innovation to improve environmental stewardship.”

While the resolution acknowledged the impact of climate change on the economy and changing weather patterns — including catastrophic weather events like heatwaves and drought cycles — the document stopped short of offering a concrete roadmap.

It read, “any efforts to mitigate the risks of, prepare for, or otherwise address our changing climate and its effects should not constrain the United States economy, especially in regards to global competitiveness.” ■

Stefanik last month voted for an appropriations bill that funded the EPA $1.9 billion above the Trump administration’s request.

“Congresswoman Stefanik disagreed with the President’s budget request and worked throughout the appropriations process to ensure the needs of our district were met,” said Tom Flanagin, a spokesman.

Flanagin characterized Stefanik’s meeting with the Adirondack Council as “very productive,” noting that the conversation touched on “many of the group’s priorities, including acid rain.”

The lawmaker, he said, is continuing to work with the group to support appropriations initiatives.

Stefanik also went to bat for the funds in brief remarks during floor debate last month.

“Thanks to the work of the EPA to support efforts to halt this epidemic, we are recovering in spectacular fashion,” Stefanik said. “Trout populations are returning to once dead lakes, waters and trees are getting healthier, and the park is a booming economic engine for our district.”

Stefanik cited a visit to the lab where the water samples collected by the Adirondack Lake Survey Corporation are tested. “(I) ask that you help me ensure that the grant funding for this important work is renewed,” she said. “The EPA’s programs and grants have been essential in restoring this ecological gem in my district. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in Congress to support these important programs.”

JOHNSBURG | The Town of Johnsburg has two candidates for the position of Superintendent of Highways in the Nov. 7 election.

Republican Daniel B. Hitchcock, 60, is the incumbent.

Fred Comstock, 51, works for the Warren County Department of Public Works (DPW). He is a registered Republican, endorsed by the Johnsburg Republican Committee, and is running on the Freedom Party ballot.

Hitchcock has 10 years experience running and managing a saw mill, and 22 years as manager for the Albany Pallet Company.

He is starting his tenth year in the job, and has 20-plus years as a volunteer fireman.

“In the nine years as highway superintendent, I have paved 14 miles of road,” Comstock told The Sun. “The town has also been subjected to three hurricanes that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. Numerous bridges, and box culverts have been repaired or replaced. A total of 16 large projects, which has been accomplished and affordable, only by using highway employees.”

If reelected, he said he will continue to improve infrastructure in a timely manner. He said he would like to see the town’s budget remain level, so he has

Comstock is currently on the paving crew and working in the sign shop for Warren County DPW. He has worked for seven years with the Town of Johnsburg Highway Department as a truck driver. He has a Class B CDL, and is working towards a Class A. He said he has worked in construction trades all his adult life. Comstock has been a member of the Garnet Lake VFD for over 20 years, 12 as fire chief, working with what he said was a very limited budget.

Comstock oversees 20 volunteer members who need to be kept up-to-date with training and standards. He is a member of the Warren County Fire Advisory Board.

If elected, Comstock said he would like to see all roads properly maintained year round; maintain tree and brush cutting and chipping, and keep the roadways safe for school buses and the community.

Asked where he would like to see more or less spending, Comstock said, “I’d like to be sure all equipment is up-to-date, running safe and properly; providing employees with proper protective equipment and tools to properly and safely do their jobs. I’d like to see money spent on roads, safe, usable equipment. I’d like to see projects started and completed in a timely manner so that there is fiscal responsibility for the taxpayers money.”

Reality check Popularity, truth, morality, politics and common sense hit the fan last week when the Harvey Weinstein

• PUBLISHER • Certain behaviors are only allowed to exist when we choose not to address them.

Powerful men and women, with the authority, money and the backing of powerful institutions have been able to stroll along through the centuries, untouched by their poor conduct, until suddenly it’s as though we’ve awoken from a bad dream and it’s no longer acceptable.

Yesterday, while unspeakable, it was okay to keep this behavior under wraps. Today, suddenly everyone is condemning what they knew all along was wrong and find it hard to publicly accept why they were silent.

Poor old Harvey, only yesterday he had it all — even an employment contract allowing for a simple financial fine when such behavior arose.

He was a Hollywood star shining as bright as one can get with every door and opportunity wide open.

Now all of sudden as a result of a news story that was almost shelved, if not for a persistent journalist, Harvey is thrown to curb, seen as the worst possible pariah.

Sadly what Harvey and others like him have done is nothing new. To some degree, we are all complicit in looking the other way when we hear about this type of behavior.

It occurs all around us every day.

We enjoy reading books, watching movies and TV shows about this form of behavior. It takes place in the halls of government, churches, schools, higher institutions, boardrooms and most likely even in our own backyard.

None of us are perfect. We all suffer from the human condition. But at some point, we need to wake up and look around at where we are going and what’s taking place, especially with those of great influence and power.

When we allow ourselves to be duped by lies and assurances that “things” are acceptable and we go along with what’s popular even though deep down we know right from wrong, well that’s when we need to take a hard reality check.

No one talks much about a conscience these days, but for those who still use one, it can make a big difference in one life.

Looking beyond the trapping of our world to a higher authority can serve us well if we take the time to pause and listen occasionally.

It might just keep you from waking up like old Harvey some day. ■

What’s at stake for Adirondackers on 2017 ballot initiatives

The stakes are high on Election Day for anyone who lives in the Adirondack Park.

Three proposals will appear on the ballot on Nov. 7. But don’t expect poll workers to tell you — it’s illegal for them to do so.

These are three separate and distinct ballot questions, and are not related to one another.

This means you can vote in favor of one, for instance, and against another.

PROPOSAL 1: HOLD A CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION

Convening a constitutional convention — or “con-con” for short — is a once-in-ageneration opportunity to completely rewrite the state constitution.

For the first time since 1997, voters statewide will be asked on Election Day whether they want to hold one.

If approved, delegates from around the state will meet beginning in April 2019.

Advocates say a con-con would provide a fertile opportunity to overhaul the entire political system, including curbing the state’s entrenched culture of corruption.

A con-con will also be a way to enshrine certain protections in the law, including safeguarding voting rights, implementing campaign finance reform and protecting against sexual and gender discrimination.

Critics have cited a laundry list of concerns associated with opening up the state’s founding document to tinkering.

Some are valid, like the fears that a con-con could erode environmental safeguards, including the Forever Wild clause that protects the Adirondack Park.

Others are not, like a price tag that has been floated at $350 million, a number erroneously generated when the cost of the 1967 convention was adjusted twice for inflation.

Critics believe the con-con will open the door to special interests dominating the process.

We agree.

We oppose the con-con because pro-reform groups have refused to rule out lobbyists from serving as the some 204 delegates

who will oversee the process— an instant dealbreaker.

Of course Albany is already dominated by special interests.

But if the con-con is to be a true return of power to the people as advocates claim, than banning lobbyists should have been a no-brainer.

The failure to do so in this era when money is flooding politics does not instill us with any guarantee that the process will not be fatally flawed from the start.

PROPOSAL 2: ALLOWS JUDGES TO REVOKE THE STATE PENSION OF A PUBLIC OFFICER CONVICTED OF A FELONY RELATED TO OFFICER’S DUTIES

Drain the swamp? Albany has been a punchline for political rot and corruption for decades.

In convictions that have since been overturned, state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos were convicted on corruption charges in 2015.

Despite their legal troubles, the former leaders are allowed to collect their taxpayer-funded pensions.

For a local example, look no further than Joyce Mitchell, the civilian prison worker who aided in the escape of two murderers from Clinton Correctional in 2015.

While Mitchell was convicted of charges related to the escape and is serving up to seven years in prison, she’s still eligible for cashing out from her $55,157 per year state job.

Under Proposal 2, a pension may be reduced or revoked if a public officer is convicted of a felony related to their official duties.

Th is commonsense legislation already has broad lawmaker support, having passed both houses of the state legislature in two consecutive sessions.

Voters should now make the legislation final.

Th is Adirondack-central proposal will create a 250 acre “Health and Safety Land Account” in the Adirondack Park and Catskills.

The measure will return control to local officials and reduce bureaucratic interference from Albany.

At present, local officials must ask the state legislature to amend the state constitution every time they need to access state land for infrastructure projects.

This ranges from telephone pole upgrades, culvert repairs, bridge work and projects to ensure safe and clean drinking water and broadband access.

Amending the constitution each time can take up to three years, a process that is also fraught with political uncertainty considering lawmakers from Brooklyn and Buffalo are largely unfamiliar with Adirondack issues.

And local officials don’t always have the resources to plead their case.

It’s a disadvantage applied only to localities in the Adirondack Park.

If voters approve Proposal 3, the state will purchase 250 acres of land to add to the state Forest Preserve.

Local governments would be authorized to purchase small slices of acreage from this account under a process administered by the state Department of Environmental Conservation with legislative oversight.

Proposal 3 is not a means to erode environmental protections — nor is it an attempt to cater to private developers — but rather a way to protect public safety and streamline government operations.

The measure has universal support across the Adirondack Park, including environmental advocacy organizations, state and local officials and business groups — all of whom helped forge the agreement over years of painstaking negotiations.

Voters should support this commonsense initiative.

I would also add that, as part of this, we need to think about what we say, how we say it, and how it might be perceived by others. While certain words and references may seem harmless to us, they can mean something vastly different to someone else.

Disappointed in how fraud call was handled To the Editor: Just wanted to say that last week my father, who is 83 years old, received a call from someone who stated that our entire family is being investigated for tax fraud.

Being elderly, this scared him and he did not know what to do! He informed me, his son, what happened.

Having the number they called from on his caller ID, I called the New York State Police non-emergency line.

One hundred years ago – October 1917 SOLDIERS DEPARTING FOR WAR

The Town of Horicon, during the Civil War, furnished more soldiers for the Union Army than any other town in Warren County, according to its population.

That the spirit of patriotism has not abated with the passing years was proven by the grand farewell demonstration given by the townspeople on Thursday night, Oct. 4, 1917 for the six young men who left Glens Falls on the following Saturday with Warren County’s third quota for the National Army Training Camp at Ayer, Massachusetts.

Practically the whole town turned out to honor the departing soldiers. The exercises were held in Kenovan’s Hall and after this was crowded to its capacity, about 500 more people remained outside to catch as much as they could of the excellent program which had been prepared for the occasion by the efficient Committee of Arrangement, Supervisor Jesse Starbuck, former supervisor Samuel C, Baker and Frederick H. Duell.

The proposal for the demonstration came from the Misses Owens, of the Palisades Hotel.

PROUD GUESTS OF HONOR

The town’s six surviving veterans of the Civil War were seated on the stage beside the guests of honor, the new soldiers of 1917, Arthur W. Smith, Dennis J. Sullivan, George W. Keenan, Harley Kingsley, Clayton Morehouse and Joseph Frasier.

The streets were illuminated with red fire during the early evening and the North Creek Band rendered patriotic airs and enlivening selections until 8 o’clock when the program in the hall was opened with a prayer by the Rev. C.B. Alford, the Episcopal rector of Chestertown and Horicon.

Captain Austin A. Ross, a silver-voiced veteran of 1861-1863, who though 76 years old retains the enthusiasm and patriotism of his early manhood, introduced the speakers and also sang with spirit the Civil War ditty, “The Old Coffee Kettle.”

Following the speaking, sandwiches, coffee, ice cream and cake were served to all present, and a comfort kit of writing paper, a fountain pen, and a flashlight went to the six new soldiers.

A box of cigars was also given to the men by D.B. Friedman of Camp Watch Rock.

SOLDIERS LEAVING FOR TRAINING CAMP

At departure day, Saturday, Oct. 6, 1917 in Glens Falls, Mrs. Hulbert Culver of Chestertown bid goodbye to her son, Percy Culver, who, unmarried, is off to war.

George W. Keenan, of Horicon and John H. Braisted, of Hague, have been disqualified because of defective eye-sight and have been discharged and returned to their homes.

In other news, Miss Elizabeth Bryant, daughter of J.T. Bryant, of Glens Falls, went to New York to report for duty as a Red Cross nurse in the United States Navy. She expects to be sent to France.

GOVERNMENT SEIZES SHIP

The palatial steamer Adirondack, of the Hudson River Navigation Company, has been commandeered by the government and has been taken to the Brooklyn Navy yard, where steam heat and electric light connections have been made with the power plant on shore. The boat will be used as a receiving ship for naval recruits.

KNAPP TO BUILD AT PEARL POINT

It is stated that George O. Knapp, whose beautiful summer home at Shelving Rock, Lake George, was recently destroyed by fire, is making plans to purchase the Pearl Point Hotel adjoining the property and will raze the buildings and add the grounds to his estate.

In the spring Mr. Knapp will rebuild on the site of his destroyed home and the new structure will be fire proof and modern to the last degree.

Chestnuts are ripening fast and are expected to be very plentiful this season.

Charles Dalaba, of Thurman, is recognized as the champion snake killer of this area as he states that he has killed 109 reptiles this past season.

Some carpenters in Bolton Landing are talking of going to Lyon Mountain, where wages are good at fifty-seven and one half cents an hour and the work is said to be not too difficult.

Camel cigarettes are on sale at Lynch’s Stony Creek Bargain Store for 11 cents a pack. Their beautifully decorated big display window sports a full size khaki tent and hunter’s equipment.

The drive is still on and gathering speed to rise money to supply our soldiers “over there” with tobacco and cigarettes.

Potatoes are being offered this fall freely by farmers at $1 a bushel and quantities have been sold at 75 cents a bushel. Free of scab and blight, the recent frost has checked the growth of these tubers.

George Moston, of North Creek, has an excellent carriage horse for sale which weighs 1,000 pounds. Terms are reasonable.

Harry Cunningham says that his bicycle with a green frame and no mudguard was stolen from his home and he will pay $10 to get it back.

The Empire Shirt Company will, on Oct. 25, 1917, make its first shipment to the government of Army tents manufactured here in the local factory in Warrensburg. Seven large cases will be sent.

Deprived of the opportunity to handle a machine gun, former president Theodore Roosevelt will settle down once more to his typewriter. (Update: “Teddy” Roosevelt had his typewriter and the man so like him, today’s President Donald Trump, has his “twitter” account. History constantly repeats itself.)

To the Editor: I am responding to the letter sent from one of our public representatives, Roger Friedman, as to his explanation of his public vote on the proposed Stewart’s expansion.

Once again, Mr. Friedman is attempting to modify his position in the Stewart’s expansion after the public outcry when the Town Board denied the zoning changes to allow the expansion.

It bears noting that Mr. Friedman’s position on the expansion should not be considered due to his obvious conflict of interest as Tops landlord. His family has received enormous sums of money from Stewart’s competition.

We should note that the Tops store was built with low interest public financing on over $2 million given to the Friedman family.

With that obvious conflict any ethical public official would have recused themselves from any of the discussion or vote on the proposed expansion.

Furthermore, his feeble attempt to change his position after the public outcry is a typical political ploy.

Data collection to help define what Chestertown is Board approves $7,000 occupancy tax money for chamber efforts

CHESTERTOWN | The Town of Chester appropriated another $7,000, Oct. 10, to pay the North Warren Chamber of Commerce for collecting information about the town and why tourists choose to visit the Chestertown area.

Supervisor Crag Leggett said at a general meeting of the chamber, Oct. 4, the town wanted to collect information on “who we are” and “what we have to offer.”

Debra Eves, a staff member of the chamber, visited the Oct. 10 Chester Town Board meeting to tell the board what the chamber has been doing regarding and what it hopes to do regarding economic development in Chestertown.

Eves said the effort is a continuation of a meeting held in April to begin an Economic Development Initiative (EDI).

A committee of town officials and chamber representatives found some areas needing improvement are infrastructure, communications, affordable housing, aesthetics, and creating a brand for marketing the town.

areas, she said, will help define the quality of life in Chester.

The EDI is hoping data collection will attach numbers to what people consider to be the quality of life. From there, the goal is to come up with a fiveyear strategic plan.

“The town wants to be in a position to make solid economic decisions for investment and growth,” Eves said.

Eves said their objective is to either substantiate or disprove some of the findings from the spring EDI meeting.

“We are looking at creating a place-based economic strategy,” Eves said, emphasizing the EDI would focus on authentic tourism.

“Authentic tourism,” she said means attracting tourism based on what already exists.

“What we have here is all people want to see,” she said, referring to the natural rivers, lakes, forests and mountains that make up Chester and the Adirondacks, saying they don’t want to see it change. “We want to recognize who we are and share it with the tourists.”

Eves said the chamber would do the research for the town, and in fact has already been collecting the kind of data it will use, but will now provide it for the town’s EDI. The first part of the EDI under the funding authorized would cover October through December, with the second phase running January and February. ■

Chester OKs $47,700 to kill black flies Board takes action of various other matters

The town board, acting as the local board of health, approved a septic variance without conditions, Oct. 10.

The board voted 5-0 to approve the Gleason application for 649 Atateka Dr. The application was to replace a faulty waste water system, replace an undersized 1,000-gallon septic tank, and eliminate other nonconformities.

CHESTERTOWN | The Chester Town Board voted unanimously to spend $47,700 for a threeyear contract with Bioconservation, Inc., for treating for black fly larvae in local waterways.

Bioconservation, Inc., operated by Kathy Vanselow, was the lone bidder for the service.

The contract will cost the town $15,900 per year, or $47,700, over the life of the contract, for BTI application.

SEPTIC VARIANCE

TAX CAP

Following a public hearing, the town board voted 5-0 to pass a resolution allowing the town to override the state mandated tax levy limit.

Attorney Mark Schachner said passing the resolution did not mean the town would exceed the cap, but the resolution was necessary in the event it needed to.

This year the amount the town can raise by taxation is capped at 1.84 percent above 2017. Supervisor Craig Leggett said there is a possibility the town will have to exceed the budget cap in 2018.

The budget, he said, could only increase by $28,500 over the 2017 budget, and it was already just $22 under the cap.

The board also accepted a bid of $1,500 for a 2003 Ford F-250 truck.

Powers has complained about the appearance of many vehicles along the property and across the street.

Leggett said he and the zoning official had a meeting scheduled with the owner of the garage.

It’s a process that takes patience but in the end it demonstrates that we are one community that works together with its residents.”■

Film fest to feature movie by Warrensburg grad “Oak Bones” slated for Glens Falls screening

GLENS FALLS | A short film written and directed by Warrensburg High School Class of 2012 graduate Lindsay Corriveau will be presented Oct. 20-21 at the Adirondack Film Festival in Glens Falls.

The experimental, impressionistic film titled “Oak Bones” portrays the fantasy of a carpenter sculpting a woman from

wood, and she comes to life, but seeks freedom from her possessive creator as she falls in love with a street performer.

Corriveau’s movie is to be one of dozens presented at 190 Grille & Cinema at 190 Glen St., downtown Glens Falls. The festival is featuring more than 80 films to be screened in six locations in Glens Falls, including the Charles Wood Theater, Crandall Library, the Queensbury Hotel, the Hyde Collection and Cool Arena, as well as the 190 Grille & Cinema.

Corriveau is a graduate of Messiah College, majoring in both film and graphic arts. She is the daughter of Jim Corriveau, director of choral music and drama productions at Warrensburg High School.

Jim Corriveau composed the score for the movie, and

Adam York and a half dozen of other area musicians — as well as Corriveau — performed the music.

“Oak Bones” features eastern European actor Tue Hoe as the lead actor, and he is scheduled to be at the 190 Grille & Cinema screening with Lindsay Corriveau, according to a report in the Glens Falls Chronicle.

The film, along with other experimental shorts, is to be shown at 8:15 p.m. on Friday and 7 p.m. on Saturday at the venue.

‘Great Gatsby Gala’ a fundraiser for families Local businessowners will be honored for longtime philanthropy

LAKE GEORGE | A leading area charity is hosting their annual dinner-dance fundraiser this weekend.

The Lake George Women in Need (WIN) Great Gatsby Gala is slated for 6-11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20 at the Lake George Marriott Courtyard.

The event raises money for WIN to provide assistance to residents of Warren County, or five-adjacent counties, who are in need of food, clothing, shelter, household supplies, medical services, or are facing an immediate financial crisis that would affect their health or safety.

The gala features an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, dinner with a Viennese dessert selection, a silent auction, live music and dancing .

Participants are encouraged to wear Roaring Twenties garb in sync with the theme. Otherwise, revelers should wear business attire, event organizer Nancy Nichols said.

To be honored at the gala for their longtime support of the charity are Trustco Bank CEO Robert J. McCormick and Olde Saratoga Coin owner/proprietor Mark Ballantyne.

Thurman supervisor race offers opposite views Spending, whitespace major election topics

THURMAN | Transparency, spending and Freedom of Information Law requests took center stage at a candidate’s forum in Thurman last week.

At a League of Women Voters-moderated event held at Thurman Town Hall on Oct. 11, incumbent candidates, supervisor Cynthia Hyde (Democrat/Independent) and supervisor candidate Susan Shepler (Republican/Independent) provided different views on how well the Town of Thurman is being managed.

“I’m concerned about the financial state of Thurman,” Shepler said. “The spending is out of control.”

At the center of Shepler’s concerns is an over $8,000 payment this year to Fred Englemann, doing business as Rainmaker Network Services, for whitespace broadband network design and construction.

Whitespace is a frequency range created when there are gaps between television channels.

The Town of Thurman was looking to use the technology to “increase the availability of broadband access for its residents,” according to the agreement.

Shepler believes Englemann was paid for work done between June 30, 2015 and Nov. 30, 2015.

Englemann later submitted another bill for redesign work for the same time period, and the previous board denied payment. The current board said it was owed and paid Englemann $8,223.

Another question related to the whitespace broadband network was if the system would ever be self-sustaining, that is, paid for by subscriptions, or if it would have to be subsidized by the entire town.

Hyde said it would be nice if customer subscriptions would pay for the system. Shepler said she believes the system is capable of paying for itself.

Responding to a question asking if spending in Thurman was “out of control,” Hyde said, “No. Not at all.”

Hyde said some people have been complaining about the town hiring a CPA regarding a capital projects audit performed by the Office of State Comptroller (OSC).

“The (OSC) examiner said we needed to bring an expert in,” Hyde said.

Regarding the $8,000 payment to Rainmaker Network, Hyde said, “We paid Mr. Englemann what he should be paid. We needed him on board.”

In response to the same question, Shepler characterized town spending as “grossly out of control,” and said the CPA was hired to do the job of the Director of Finance.

In her opening comments, Shepler also said the town board decided to spend $600 per month for roll-off dumpsters it could have gotten from free from Warren County.

She said the town had gone over budget on attorney fees, saying it was another reason Thurman residents should see a large tax increase. Hyde said she full expects the town to remain under the tax cap.

Shepler said she was concerned with transparency in Town of Thurman government.

Shepler supporters, such as Republican board candidate Gail Seaman, have said the town government has not been forthcoming with information requested under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIL).

“Someone has been filing 150 FOIL requests per day,” Hyde said, saying it was impossible to comply with that

volume of requests.

The two supervisor candidates also had different views on the appointment of a deputy supervisor.

“You could, but you don’t have to,” Hyde said.

She said the board developed a system for use is she were unavailable, directing people to a particular board member depending on the nature of the question.

“Having a deputy supervisor is important,” Shepler said.

“You shouldn’t have to hunt people down to answer questions.”

Regarding their qualifications to be the town’s financial officer, a role that goes to the supervisor, Hyde outlined her 10 years experience as town clerk, and as a board member.

She said being appointed as supervisor in February caused her to “hit the ground running.”

“That’s the best training in the world,” she said.

Fire department makes presentation during Spirit Week

WARRENSBURG | Oct. 11 happened to be “Wacky Wednesday” at the Warrensburg Elementary School, but it was serious business as the students participated in a Fire Prevention Program put on by the Warrensburg Volunteer Fire Company.

The Warrensburg Central School District hosted Warrensburg Fire Chief Justin Hull at the school, as he and Firefighter Ryan Griffin introduced students grades Pre-K through grade 3 to fire safety and fire equipment in general.

Hull started out the program, which was being held in the middle of Spirit Week, in the general purpose room at the Warrensburg Elementary School.

In the first assembly of the day, Hull showed kindergarten students a smoke detector.

“What does it mean when this beeps?” he asked.

“Change the battery,” one student offered.

“Take it down,” said another.

Hull explained that the smoke detector beeping means there is smoke in the air and possibly a fire in the house, meaning they should get out.

Hull also show the students items found around the house that they should never play with, including any type of lighter and gas cans.

“If you see one,” Hull said, holding a gas can, “don’t touch it.”

Hull also held up an electrical outlet and asked the kids what they should do with it.”

“Don’t touch it,” several called out.

Hull also asked the students had a fire extinguisher in the house, holding one up for them to see.

Hull as all the kids to go home with a coloring/activity book the fire department was handing out and have their parents create an escape plan.

“Sit down with your parents and draw an escape plan. Then post it on the refrigerator so all the family can see it,” he said.

Hull instructed the kids to, if they see smoke, to get down low to the ground and get to the nearest exit. He also advised the children not to be afraid of the firemen in their turnout gear.

“Don’t be afraid — we are there to help,” he said.

After the presentation inside the school, the students went outside where firefighter Ryan Griffin was waiting beside Engine 351.

Griffin explained the various tools used by firefighters, but more important let them watch him put on and take off the turnout gear, which includes a hood, helmet, and respirator mask that hides the firefighter’s face, to let them know there was a person inside.

After the presentation, Griffin allowed the students to walk through the passenger portion of the engine’s cab. ■

The group will present the classics not just as a live performance in old radio-style, but as a shadow play, the first of its kind in the Adirondack region.

While actors bring these eerie episodes to life through shadow and voice, Foley artists will perform sound effects with rubber gloves, wet rags, and various tools in the style that calls back to the golden age of radio, all culminating into a scary and stellar performance that promises to give

Kaifetz said the funding for testing and treatment is already there, and the bill he presented to legislators just asks Congress to specify what the money is to be used for.

“When we took our oath, we were all eligible to be shot at. Now, not all of us are eligible for our care,” he said. “One senator I talked to thought all veterans just received VA care without thinking about it.

Kaifetz met with officials from a number of offices, including Georgia Rep. Henry “Hank” Johnson, himself a hepatitis C survivor.

“He gave me a 50th Anniversary Vietnam pin and pinned it on me,” Kaifetz said.

He also spoke with representatives from Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-Florida); Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Pennsylvania), Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana), Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tennessee), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Senate Major-

“In 2011, they told me I was not a candidate for treatment at the time, and to go home and put my things in order,” recalled Kaifetz when told about his diagnosis.

The Vietnam veteran said he was exposed to the disease through his service, if not from going to the Asian country, then by the use of a “jet gun,” which was used to inoculate soldiers with a series of shots.

It’s widely speculated that the device contaminated the blood supply.

“There’s no distinction in the numbers between those who went over and those who didn’t as far as contracting the disease,” Kaifetz said. “The VA has not had to admit to the contamination, but they have stated it is a biological possibility.”

Still, Kaifetz kept trying to get help through the system.

“There were low success rates, horrible side effects, and if you lived too far from a hospital, they would not treat you,” he said. “There were 10,000 requests every year for liver transplants and the VA would only do 400 a year.”

Luckily for Kaifetz, new medicine started rolling out in 2014, and he was able to get the treatment he needed a couple years later, but still remembered what it was like waiting to find out if he would ever get the chance to receive the life-saving medication.

“Some of the meetings were very moving,” Kaifetz said. “They were all very genuine with the level of interest they were showing and there was a great deal of respect in all the meetings. I came away with a sense of pride knowing the system works.”

After meeting with The Sun. Kaifetz had a two-hour phone conference with some of the key players in Washington later in the week, which he described as “all very positive.”

“It looks like we will be presenting our first draft of the bill to several key representatives and senators from both parties within the next 15 days,” he said. “I am pushing for an announcement on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, that we have the four key sponsors we are seeking — making this bill bi-partisan and bi-cameral. Right now our team is doing the research for the bill and next week will begin drafting the vehicle.”

Kaifetz has not just been seeing results in Washington, but locally, where he is a member of American Legion 1619 out of Morrisonville.

“Through our first two tests, we will have been able to test 1,200 vets,” he said. “In the same time, VA outreach has tested 2,450

people. So, Post 1619, with a budget of zero, accomplished almost half of what the VA was able to accomplish. We have become committed to this, so we will go out and test all of the veterans we can.” ■

From newcomers to champions

Bacon, Dwyer, leave team they helped start with D-III crown

NORTH CREEK | For the past five years, Megan Bacon and Taylor Dwyer would sometimes look up to the walls of the Johnsburg Central School gymnasium.

Sometimes they would be prompted to do so by Megan’s brother or Taylor’s dad, showing them the mark they had set on the school when looking at the championship banners.

The two would then look over to a corner of the gym, where the girls soccer banner was hung, empty.

“I’ve wanted to put my mark on that banner,” Dwyer said. “I’ve wanted to put a year on that banner so when I come back, I can say, there’s my mark.”

On Oct. 13, at the end of the fifth regular season of Lady Jaguars varsity soccer, Dwyer and Bacon, the lone remaining players from the first varsity soccer team in 2013, did just that as Johnsburg clinched it’s first Northern Soccer League Division II title.

“It’s amazing,” Bacon said. “This is something we were able to do to help get Johnsburg on the map in Section VII.”

MOVE TO SOCCER

Dwyer and Bacon both played soccer growing up in a school district which hosted a varsity field hockey program competing in Section II. “Coach (Casey) Tomb approached us about the school having a girls soccer team and I was excited to see where we could go with it,” Dwyer said.

“I was definitely excited after playing so many years in youth soccer with the boys,” Bacon said. “Switching over was a process that was difficult and stressful.”

After playing their seventh grade year for the modified team, the two were called up as members of the first-year varsity program which played as a club team throughout Section II and VII. “I don’t think we realized we were a club team or whatever, we just wanted to play soccer,” Dwyer said.

“It was important to be on that first team because we were actually the more experienced players and we became leaders to the older girls,” Bacon said. “We were the ones who knew the sport and were teaching it to the new players who were coming off field hockey.”

The team was also working with a new coach to the sport in Cindy Homer.

“They are both really hard workers in the classroom and on the field,” Homer said. “They have so much heart and they really play for the team first. They really are going to be missed.”

“She really helped to develop the aspects of team and family with us, and I believe that is why we have always worked well together,” Dwyer said.

“She held us together and took a leadership role,” Bacon said. “She looked up everything she could to help us succeed.”

SUCCESS

After a season as a club team and a year as a member of Section VII’ s soccer conference, the Jaguars entered the 2015 sectionals with an exclamation point. After scoring a 1-0 win over Willsboro in the preliminary round, the Lady Jags ousted third seed Crown Point, playing the game with only 10 field players to Crown Point’s standard 11.

“It was intense and crazy to face such a strong team, playing with only 10 players,” Dwyer said. “Here we were with no experience when it came to the playoffs, but we were determined to push forward.”

“It was a really cool moment and important for our team going forward showing us what we could do,” Bacon said.

The Jags 2015 season ended in the next

The Jags will face Elizabethtown-Lewis/Westport Thursday, Oct. 19, at Camp Dudley in Westport with a 3 p.m. kickoff.

Photos by Jill Lobdell round with a loss to eventual champion Chazy, and 2016 found the Jaguars making smaller strides forward, entering the sectional tournament as a fourth seed before falling to fifth seed Elizabethtown-Lewis Westport on a day where all higher seed teams were eliminated.

“We knew we still had the potential to play better,” Dwyer said. “I was not sure how this year would go because I think everyone expected last year was going to be the big one for our team.”

“It became different because now we are still leaders, but playing with a group of kids who have been able to come through a modified program and know the game,” Bacon said. “I think it’s given us a feeling of trust between everyone now.”

This year also saw a change in coaching, as Homer stepped down to take on a new job and Andy Snide replaced her on the bench.

“I didn’t know what to expect but coach Snide has been a great help and will work with us to improve our games,” Bacon said.

“With his knowledge and the experience of the modified players, I think it is less stressful on me a Megan and we can focus more

on the game since these girls have come up through the soccer program,” Dwyer said.

“They are a great combination of hardworking athletes,” Snide said. “Having them as a duo gives us something most teams do not have and they work well with the rest of the team. It is going to be really special for their leadership and determination to be awarded with this division championship, because they have been the players who got us there.”

With that, the Lady Jaguars finished the season 13-2-0 overall with a 13-1-0 record in division play.

However, after having their best season in program history, the Jaguars were ranked fifth among Class D teams and will take to the road, heading to Camp Dudley in Westport to face the Lady Griffins for the second year in a row Thursday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m.

“If we continue to play the way we have been, we will do well in sectionals,” Bacon said.

“We will take it game-by-game and keep working hard,” added Dwyer. “We’ll see where that takes us.” ■

WarEagles stymied by steely Stillwater

LAKE GEORGE | Turnovers as well as troubles battling against a tough defense led to a 16-40 loss Oct. 14 when the Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne football took on Stillwater High.

“We had too many turnovers — we lost possession inside the 35 yard line three times — and Stillwater is too good of a team to do that to,” WarEagles coach Jeff Bennett said.

Going into the game, Stillwater had a 5-1 record, and Lake George was 3-3.

“Stillwater has a very strong defense, and they dominated our front line, wearing us down,” he continued.

Although they were battle weary — Stillwater was leading 26-0 at halftime — the WarEagles didn’t back down; they scored two touchdowns to close out the game.

“Our athletes never quit — they just kept going,” Bennett added. “It was a great effort.”

At 7 p.m. Friday Oct. 20, the Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne team will close out their season with a home game against Coxsackie-Athens.

This post-season crossover game pits the two teams that are No. 5 in their respective divisions of Class C: the WarEagles from the Northern division, and Coxsackie from the Southern division.

Bennett said his athletes were enthusiastic about their last football showdown for 2017.

“Our players are up for this game — they want to finish out the season with a win,” he said. “We expect to get back on track after a good week of practice.” ■

Lake George edges BoltonWarrensburg in second overtime Team clinches ADK League title

BOLTON LANDING | An epic showdown between the Lake George and BoltonWarrensburg girl’s soccer teams Oct. 11 was concluded in the very last minute possible of the game’s second and final overtime period.

With the seconds ticking down, Lake George’s Gabriella Marchello kicked the ball from a corner of the field to Sarah Kohls, who bounced it off her head directly into the goal for the 2-1 Warrior victory, avoiding a tie game.

The win confirmed the Warriors’ second consecutive Adirondack League championship and advances the team’s season record to 13-0 in the league and 13-2 overall.

A subsequent victory against Corinth two days later improved the team’s season record

to 14-0 in the league and 14-2 overall, concluding the regular season and extending the Warriors’ league winning streak to 27 games.

For a few weeks, the Warriors have been ranked the No. 2 Class C team in New York state. To date this year, the Warriors have outscored their opponents 97 to 5.

The team’s season record has earned them a bye in the first round of sectional play, followed by two home games — the first is this Saturday, Oct. 21.

Although Lake George’s offense is tough to defend — as four players have scored 12 or more goals this season — Warrior Coach Steve Kohls credits his defense as key to their success.

“Our defenders have the ability to step up, receive a pass, change the field and make good passes,” he said. “Kylie Mann and our other center defenders have all the skills of an offensive player — they can win the ball, dribble, and beat the opponents’ defense, taking the ball into the offensive zone.”

Jeckel particularly for their work during the game against Bolton-Warrensburg.

“Being a two-way player, Samantha Kingsley helped moving the ball from defense to offense, and Sam Jeckel made two or three one-one-one stops.”

Kohls also praised Bolton-Warrensburg’s defense.

“Their senior leadership, particularly Maddy Pratt and Caitlin Speranza — center midfielder and center defender — is very strong; tough to score on. We took 20 shots on goal but only four or five were good ones,” Kohls said. “Their offense is also very good, and they’ll be very successful in the upcoming years.”

Warrior forward Logan Marie Clarke scored the first goal against Bolton-Warrensburg with 22 minutes on the clock in the first half. Then early in the second half, the Eagles’ Madelyn Pratt scored the tying goal in the second half off assists by Leah Monroe and Chelsea Speranza, which sent the play into two successive overtime periods.

rence offered her thoughts about her team’s performance in the game, noting that her players were “very coachable.”

“The girls came ready to go, and they played great,” she said. “We made some adjustments — Maddy Pratt and Caitlyn Speranza were willing to switch positions on the field — and Ashley Connery has been great as our goaltender.”

Lawrence continued her thoughts about her team, which is now 11-2-1 in the league and 12-3-1 overall.

“We not only have a lot of players returning from the team that competed in the state Final Four, but we have athletes like sophomore Hope Boland, who has been a great asset to team — you can give her any responsibility or position on the field and she’ll perform.”

Lawrence said her players have high expectations for post-season play. Ranked the 7th seed in Class D, the Eagles face Mayfield at 2 p.m. Saturday Oct. 21 on the Bolton Central soccer field.

“We’re ready for sectionals,” she said. ■

Burghers win football title with comeback win over Hoosic Valley

WARRENSBURG | The Burghers football team made history Saturday as they won the Class D-2 championship by defeating Hoosic Valley 20-14 in a suspense-filled battle on their home field.

The comeback victory on homecoming weekend clinched a league/divisional title the Burghers hadn’t held since 1993, although the 2004 team did win a Sectional title and advance to earn a berth in the state’s Final Four.

Regardless of the weight of their achievement, the 2017 Warrensburg-Bolton football team took this in stride, knowing that they need to toughen up for the coming weeks of play, coach Mike Perrone said this week.

“It was great to see that our players were even-keeled about winning the championship — in past years, they’d be throwing a party,” he said. “It’s good they all understand we have a lot more to do to get where we want to be.”

Perrone said his athletes played with less intensity against Hoosic Valley than in the prior week against Canajoharie. This reduced energy led to a second-quarter 8-16 score deficit from which they had to recover.

“I’m proud of my players finding a way to win when they’re not doing their best — It’s hugely important,” he said.

Their comeback included a strong drive ending in a 15-yard touchdown run by Trevor Prosser.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Burghers forced a fumble, and this possession ended up in a 20-yard touchdown run by Cole Lanfear, who had scored the game’s opening touchdown.

With his dive over the goal line late in the second quarter,

Lanfear passed 1,000 yards for the season. By the game’s end, he accrued 1, 082 yards — 209 of of those yard against Hoosic Valley; Prosser contributed 101 yards, gaining 890 on the ground for the year.

For the entire second half, both teams’ defenses held off any scoring action, yielding a crucial victory for the Burghers.

Perrone praised the power of his defense.

“The second half, our defense played with heart and intensity — we held Hoosic Valley to 44 yards total offense,” he said.

Warrensburg’s offensive depth has been a big factor in their record-setting 6-1 season.

For the last several weeks, opposing teams’ defenses have been focusing on containing Prosser — the top runner early in the season — overloading whatever side he’s positioned on.

In response, quarterback Evan MacDuff has been handing the ball off to Cole Lanfear more often, resulting in Lanfear earning the top game-score honors in the latest contests. Also, Prosser and Lanfear have been backed up by Dan Monthony, John Kelly, Zach Shambo, Evan Rock, Ryan Vaughn, Jesse Griffin and Jordan Mallory in their ground attack. All this was after the team’s lead runner, Greg Shambo, was sidelined for 2017 early this season with an injury.

“Both Prosser and Lanfear have been unreal this year,” Perrone said. “It’s so good we have two really powerful running backs at this point.”

Before the win over Hoosic Valley, the Burghers were ranked No. 18 statewide in Class D. This rank is likely to improve several positions as of Oct. 18.

Next up for the Burghers is an away non-divisional game Oct. 21 against Cohoes, a school with larger enrollment north of Albany.
