Wburg Health Center to be dedicated to Rugge

WARRENSBURG Ñ Hudson Headwater Health NetworkÕ s new medical center in Warrensburg Ñ envisioned as a major step forward in health care for people of northern Warren County Ñ is to be dedicated to HHHN founder Dr. John Rugge.

The Hudson HeadwatersÕ Board of Directors declared earlier this month that the center would be named the Ò John K. Rugge M.D. Health Center.Ó The announcement was made by board officials at a surprise 70th birthday party for Rugge held Oct. 3.

Rugge, however, said Oct. 14 heÕ d personally be resisting the effort to re-christen the Warrensburg Health Center Ñ a title itÕ s had for more than 30 years. Ò ItÕ s going to remain the Warrensburg Health Center,Ó he said, noting that he will be trying to convince board members to retain the medical center Õ s traditional name.

CHESTERTOWN Ñ A unusual but intriguing phenomenon is to occur this Saturday Oct. 18 in Chestertown.

As many as 200 costumed canines Ñ wrinkly, bugeyed but ever-so-cute pugs Ñ will be charming a crowd as they strut in a parade on Dynamite Hill.

The annual Halloween Pug Party & Parade, considered one of ChestertownÕ s premier events, is expected to draw people from all over the northeastern U.S. ThereÕ s no charge to participate.

Each year on a weekend in mid-October, pug owners from all over New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont, Canada and elsewhere have flocked

to Chestertown for canine-related activities and socializing with other pug owners, who are known to dote on their pets and enjoy their pleasant, patient character.

Personification of pets prevails in this fun-spirited parade and party thatÕ s charmed hundreds of families for 15 years.

More train rides, new freight deals boost railway’s prospects

thom@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK Ñ With a new freight-hauling contract, and a surge in sales of passenger trips, the Saratoga-North Creek railway is enjoying a prosperous conclusion to 2014, railway general manager Justin Gonyo said this week.

A new themed passenger excursion called the Pumpkin Patch Express is to occur this weekend, with as many as 1,000 children and adults participating.

The trip features children choosing a pumpkin to take home and visits to North Creek shops, billed as a walk down Ò Trick of Treat Trail.Ó This fall-themed excursion is selling quite well, Gonyo said, noting it was sold out for Sunday Oct. 19 and filling up fast for Saturday Oct. 18 Ñ at a price of $20 per ticket.

Leaving at 10 a.m. from Saratoga, the train Ñ accompanied by a story-telling scarecrow character Ñ arrives in North Creek at 12:15 p.m. for a three-hour layover. During this time, children paint their pumpkin, win prizes, taken a pony or hay ride as well as visiting the local stores for treats. Vendors of crafts and other wares are to be on hand, Gonyo said.

“We aim to boost foot traffic in the local businesses,” he said.

The railway already has 10,000 passengers booked for its 2014 Christmas-themed Polar Express excursions. Last year, these special trips occurred during late November and throughout December. For this yearÕ s Polar Express, an additional doubledecker dome car will join the existing two in order to boost the

number of passengers, Gonyo said.

While ridership was light on this summerÕ s new North End Local which aimed to give Lake George visitors a ride from Thurman Station to North Creek, the railway is taking action to build the passenger traffic next year.

Efforts are already underway to partner with businesses and boost publicity for this short-run tourist service, Gonyo said.

The railwayÕ s special trains on Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 to Thurman Station were sold out, Gonyo said. These runs transported bargain-seekers from Saratoga to Thurman for WarrensburgÕ s huge WorldÕ s Largest Garage Sale event. Ò Overall, weÕ re very pleased about the response to our North End Local during it’s first year,” he said, noting he and other railway officials expect growth for 2015. In late summer, Gonyo told supervisors that ridership overall during 2014 had increased by as much as 25 percent, year-todate.

New rail freight contract signed

The big news, however, is a new freight contract the railway secured Ñ to haul 2,000 tons of high-grade gravel per day via rail from Tahawus to Taunton, Mass., where the material is to be used for railroad ballast under the rails.

Another pending contract calls for 6,000 tons per day to be hauled by rail to Corinth, and trucked from there to Fall River, Mass.

Gonyo said Tuesday Oct. 14 that freight cars in Tahawus were already being loaded with the gravel, and that the freight trips to Taunton would begin the week of Oct. 20.

The high-friction gravel is from the abandoned NL Industries mines.

Another contract, calling for millions of tons of gravel to be transported to Long Island for road construction, is still being negotiated. This customer is seeking to have as much as 20 million tons of gravel hauled via rail over the next two decades.

Additional rail freight traffic over the Warren County-owned

railroad is welcome news, county Board of Supervisors Chairman Kevin Geraghty said Tuesday. Ò There has been some concern that getting the freight underway was taking longer than expected, but this is good news because it’s important to the finances of the railway operations,” he said.

Warren County and the town of Corinth, which jointly own the track and stations, receive a portion of the railwayÕ s revenue.

Mountain Lake PBS hosts screening of ‘Lake Defenders’ at Charles R. Wood Theatre

maggie@denpubs.com GELNS FALLS — On Oct. 7, public officials gathered in front of a intimate audience to discuss Mountain Lake PBS and screen a free showing of their documentary, Ò Lake Defenders.Ó The hour long presentation focused on Mountain Lake PBS and their relevance to the community, asking those in attendance to sign a petition to get the channel on Time WarnerÕ s cable lineup for Warren and Washington counties. The gathering was accompanied by the Lake George documentary which discussed how aquatic invasive species are still a pressing issue as new developments continue to arise.

The presentation opened with Alice Recor, CEO of Mountain Lake PBS. She hopes that with the help of the public, the channel will soon allow people from our region to tune in. The programming currently reaches over 3.9 million viewers, but Recor thinks that the channel isnÕ t accessible to the viewers that need it most.

Recor addressed the audience, asking Ò What makes us different?Ó She answered, Ò We are proud of our local programming, especially in the Adirondacks. These programs start important conversations about what is going on in these communities.Ó Mountain Lake PBS first petitioned Time Warner to get the channel on local cable back in February. The pursuit has been successful thus far, getting close to 300 signatures on their website. The Adirondack Park has countless small communities dispersed within its bounds, which makes the demand for local news and staying connected all the more relevant.

Sen. Betty Little took the stage next, commenting on the Ò phenomenal job,Ó that the Lake George Association has done in, Ò raising awareness, education, and need not only in the area but throughout New York State.Ó The Senator truly cares about the issue, stating how we must protect the Queen of American Lakes.

Little continued on, discussing how the community must join together to get documentaries like Ò Lake Defenders,Ó on local cable programming. She feels that Mountain Lake PBS is extremely thorough in its coverage and its programming addresses topics that directly relate to the people of our region.

Time Warner is only required to have two PBS channels on local television, so the challenge Mountain Lake PBS is facing lies in convincing the cable dynamo that there is a demand in our area. Little commented that Time Warner has been getting a lot of pressure from the community, and everything that locals continue to do is important.

Little stated that she thinks Time Warner should be looking to please the public in order to put this merger through. She joked that, Ò like everything else in New York State, it will happen after the election.Ó Little ended her speech, passing the mic to assemblyman Dan

Stec, leaving the audience with this- Ò Please continue the pressure, I think we are making a difference and there is no point in giving up at this stage.Ó Stec echoed many of LittleÕ s sentiments, agreeing that, Ò there is a lot of Adirondack programming that would benefit and be enjoyed by locals here.Ó Walt Lender, President of the LGA took the floor after Stec, thanking everyone for their support and continual interest in what is going on at the bottom of our beautiful lake. Lender stated that some of the problem they can manage, but at great expense. He reiterated what many already know, reporting that millions of dollars have been spent over the past 20 years and there are continually new threats on the horizon.

Lender said when Mountain Lake PBS suggested partnering with LGA to make Ò Lake DefendersÓ that they jumped at the opportunity. Ò We wanted to share our successes and our challenges...we have so much to share about what we have been doing,Ó said Lender.

down and the screen lit up as the 30 minute Ò Lake DefendersÓ commenced.

As any effective piece of journalism does, the documentary addresses important questions people may have while also giving an inside perspective of the problem. Ò Lake DefendersÓ discusses how invasive species entered the area, how it is currently effecting our community, and the potential threats the area may face if the issue is not resolved. Though the community has been informed of the dangers of aquatic invasive species, this documentary instills a sort of motivating fear into its viewers. Some of the factual evidence is chilling yet not widely known.

In stating how Mountain Lakes feels about bringing their network to the region, Thom Hallock said, Ò we do a lot of stories you would like to see that apply to this area.Ó He listed off topics that have been recently been reported such as the ammunition removal in Lake George, MarthaÕ s Dandy Creme, a faulty ignition switch in a GM car that might have killed a local man, Essex CountyÕ s District Attorney on the police shooting in North Hudson, and Railroads on Parade. Ò These stories have been covered, and we wish you could have seen them,Ó Hallock said.

Tina’s Hair Affair learns new techniques at ‘Behind the Chair’ event

maggie@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE Ñ Tina Cacckello, owner of TinaÕ s Hair Affair, recently went on a trip to New Orleans, LA where she expanded her knowledge on new techniques in the hair world.

Her salon, located in Lake George Village, is constantly evolving with the newest trends as Cacckello, a Redken and Keratin Smooth Teacher, often allows herself to be a student at various classes throughout the year.

Cacckello has been in business in the area for nine years at three different locations, and she never allows herself to fall into old habits. Ò Behind the ChairÓ , one of the biggest color events of the year, allowed the stylist to learn new skills and mingle with some of the biggest people in the industry.

Ò It was really awesome,Ó said Cacckello.

“You get to meet so many influential people in the industry who are actually very approachable. There were people from as far as New Zealand and Australia at the event.Ó CacckelloÕ s passion has always been color and she has even taught the many aspects of cosmetology for over 14 years. First, Cacckello was a Redken color educator for seven years and after her retirement was asked to be a Kertain Smoothing treatment teacher. The stylist specializes in certifying stylists about products and techniques, often traveling both locally and out of town to educate those in the industry.

The selection of color is remarkable, as Tina points out that she offers over 300 different options to paint a customerÕ s hair with. Ò There isnÕ t a color I canÕ t make, create, or fix,” said Cacckello, “It doesn’t matter if you are 12 years old or 60 years old, I have a color

for you.Ó The salon ownerÕ s expertise isnÕ t just in color, she is also partnered with Redcarpet Salon, a bridal business, where almost every weekend is booked with a bridal party. Ò I love doing updoÕ s,Ó said Cacckello, Ò I actually just went to blowdrying bootcamp, itÕ s like mastering the art of blowdrying,Ó She said as she smiled at the young woman in her chair, Ò This girl comes in three times a week to get her hair blown out.Ó Tina doesnÕ t just settle for what she already knows (which is a lot) but she continues to educate herself, usually taking up to four classes a year. This constant evolution of the salonÕ s skillset probably explains why TinaÕ s clientele reach all the way to Albany and beyond. Ò I keep my prices competitive and affordable,Ó she said. Ò You can get your hair done in a salon and not at home.Ó

Cacckello doesnÕ t make her clients choose between quality and affordablity, making her salon even more accommodating. A woman walked in, frantic about the state of her nails. Ò I need a manicure, I have a wedding to go to at 3 p.m.,Ó the woman said. Ò I donÕ t have an opening today,Ó Cacckello told the customer, Ò but would you like to borrow some nail polish?Ó Most salons wouldnÕ t offer a stranger a bottle of high-end nailpolish, but Cacckello just wants to help as many people as she can.

Department of Enviromental Conservation announces rescue missions locally

LAKE GEORGE Ñ New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers respond to search and rescue incidents statewide. Working with other state agencies, local emergency response organizations and volunteer search and rescue groups, Forest Rangers locate and extract lost, injured or distressed people from the backcountry.

“DEC Forest Rangers’ knowledge of first aid, land navigation and technical rescue techniques are often critical to the success of their missions,Ó said DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. Ò Search and rescue missions often require Rangers to function in remote wilderness areas from rugged mountainous peaks to white-water rivers, and through vast forest areas from spruce-fir thicket to open hardwoods.Ó

Injured Hiker: On Sept. 16, at 12:17 p.m., Warren County Dispatch contacted DEC Dispatch in Ray Brook reporting an injured hiker on Prospect Mountain. Marguerite Walton, 59, of Lake George, had suffered a lower leg injury. Two DEC Forest Rangers responded, assisted by the Lake George Fire Department & EMS and the North Queensbury Fire Department. Ms. Walton was located, secured and carried out to the Prospect Mountain Road, reaching the trailhead at 1:47 p.m. The North Queensbury

Lost Hiker: On Sept. 20, at 2:29 p.m., Warren County Dispatch contacted DEC Dispatch in Ray Brook regarding a lost hiker. Brian Hall, 26, of Towland, Conn., was lost on Prospect Mountain for roughly two hours. Two DEC Forest Rangers responded, calling out for Mr. Hall near the summit parking area. Voice contact was made and he was located 200 yards off the road near a rocky outcrop. Forest Rangers escorted Mr. Hall out and reunited him with his family at 3:02 p.m.

Panthers clinch title in overtime

maggie@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG Ñ The Hoosick Falls girls clinched the Adirondack Wasaren League title with a hard fought 3-2 overtime victory over Warrensburg in local field hockey action.

Hoosick Falls’ Allyson Burdick scored first, five minutes into the game, but the BurghersÕ answered quickly with a goal of their own by Baylee Smith.

With the score tied at 1-1, the two teams traded shots but it was the Panthers who struck next, taking a 2-1 lead into the half on a goal by Caytlyn Springer.

Warrensburg came out fired up to start the second half, but they were unable to find the net on multiple scoring opportunities, and when Hoosick Falls was able to secure a penalty shot, things looked bleak for the Burghers. Liz Turner, the Warrensburg goalie, thought otherwise and made a timely save to keep the score at 2-1 in favor of the Panthers.

With only moments left in the game, Warrensburg continued to press the action and finally tied the score on a goal by Heather Wood. The horn sounded soon after and the game headed into overtime.

Reminiscent to WarrensburgÕ s last face off against Corinth, a 7 vs. 7 set up took the field as players faced off for the win. The tie was shortlived, however, as Hoosick FallsÕ Liz Ryan scored only minutes into the extra period, sending the PanthersÕ sideline into a wild celebration.

Warriors soccer refocuses after setback

thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE Ñ Regrouping after their first loss of 2014 in a showdown between league leaders, the Lake George boys soccer team players are now focusing on finishing off the season with a flourish.

Lake George and Fort Ann both had no losses going into their second face-off of the season on Sept. 26, following a tie in their first matchup Sept. 5.

In their encore showdown, Lake George struck first, and held onto their 1-0 lead through the second half. But Fort AnnÕ s relentless pressure during the second stanza yielded three goals in the final 17 minutes to give the Cardinals a 3-1 victory.

Since then, Lake George defeated Corinth 4-0 on Oct. 1, beat Hadley-Luzerne 4-0 two days later, then defeated North Warren 6-1 on Oct. 6. four days later, the Warriors defeated Hartford 4-0 in a game in which they maintained substantial ball control Ñ Craig Keenan, the fourth highest scoring leader in the area, scored three goals in the first half, which set the stage for the victory.

With two league games remaining, the Lake George Warriors are likely to conclude their regular season as runners-up in the league unless Fort Ann stumbles as they finish off their schedule this next week.

Lake George, now 12-1-1, is to play Salem at home on Wednesday Oct. 15, then meet up with Bolton-Warrensburg two days later.

Lake George Coach Blake White, who tallied his 350th career win with a 9-0 win on Sept. 26 against Argyle, said he and his players have now shaken off their disappointment over the loss to Fort Ann, which he chalked up to complacency. Ò We thought weÕ d win the league, but sometimes kids take things for granted,Ó he said, referring to his teamÕ s legacy of league leadership. Ò Our team played great Monday against North Warren, thoughÓ he continued, describing how his players are now exhibiting more energy and drive than two weeks ago.

The Warriors now have their focus on the Section II tournament, aware of the 2013 Lake George teamÕ s remarkable record-setting run that took them into the Final Four of the state championship, the highest level of soccer competition in school history.

The 2014 team regrouped after losing 10 seniors to graduation, six of them starters, White said. Ò We lost our goalie and almost our entire defense,Ó he said. Ò We have a whole new lineup in the back half of the field, all but one.Ó White said the 2014 Warriors have a formidable challenge ahead in Class C Sectionals which start in late October. tournament are to be determined Oct. 21. Ò ThereÕ s tough competition in the CÕ s this year,Ó he said, mentioning Stillwater, BerneKnox, Mayfield and Saratoga Catholic as solid contenders for the Section II title. Ò A lot of teams are playing well.Ó The Warriors lineup has shifted mid-season due to injuries. Sophomore goalie Eli Gowen was hurt in a collision with a teammate Ñ and Senior Colby Cracco, a firstyear player with basketball experience, has stepped into GowenÕ s shoes. Cracco has played well during the last two games, only giving up one goal.

Due to another injury, Andrew McGowan has stepped up and taken on the role of a defensive starter, accomplishing a lot for the team, White said.

Also exceeding expectations is sophomore Zeke Reynolds, who played on defense in 2013, but this year has taken on the post of outside wing, tallying six goals and three assists already. Ò This is impressive for a kid without much experience,Ó White said. Ò Reynolds is fast and strong.Ó White said that he and his team have high expectations for finishing off 2013, moving deep into the Sectional tournament. Ò If we can keep playing with intensity and stay focused and Ô zoned inÕ , we can accomplish a lot,Ó he said. Ò It could be really exciting if we put it all together.Ó

Nonprofits: Should they pay their fair share? North Country Community Papers alive and doing well

N

onprofit organizations abound throughout the North Country.

They provide services like lobbying for environmental protection and fostering artistic appreciation.

They promote recreation and educate our citizens.

While their missions are diverse, most share a common collective strand.

They do not pay property taxes on the real estate and the buildings they own.

But at the same time, they impose a cost on municipalities by consuming public services, like roads, streetlights and ambulances.

This doesnÕ t seem fair to the taxpayers in the cash-strapped North Country.

In fact, it seems like a legally-sanctioned form of squatting.

As budget season falls on towns throughout the Adirondack Park, that large sucking noise you hear is the sound of these organizations vacuuming up services as beleaguered town officials scourge for change in their couch cushions.

WeÕ re well aware of the historical background that has led to this antiquated system, that these institutions contribute to societyÕ s general welfare by providing much-needed services for those who cannot provide for themselves.

But we think that in many cases, this is subjective.

Sure, religious organizations still fall within that category and are sacrosanct in remote communities. So do the myriad of other health and human services providers that fill in the cracks left by governmental absence.

Some health care centers and hospitals say they provide a valuable service to the poor and have applied for tax-exempt status.

While we question how much of those services are actually being offered to the indigent in lieu of citizens with sweet private insurance packages, they also act as anchors for good-paying jobs, attracting young professionals who plant roots in the community and enroll their kids in local schools.

How about areas like recreation, arts councils and environmental organizations? Should they also be tax-exempt under the auspices that they provide a common good?

As proud Adirondackers, we think things like good paying jobs for the lifelong working folks provide a common good, not abstract concepts.

Without good jobs, people will continue to flee the region. The tax base will continue to plummet, further kneecapping budget planning by municipal governments that are already rolling back the services they provide to those of us who do pay taxes.

This gradual extinction of our communities was presented in all of its stark ugliness last spring when some schools were openly discussing closing their doors and sending their students elsewhere.

Similar discussions will undoubtedly be repeated this coming winter.

One moderate solution is asking nonprofits to make escalating annual payments that would eventually rise to a percentage of what they would pay if treated like any other institution, measures similar to the PILOT agreements used to lure in business investment.

Some is better than none.

This is basic math.

We learned this in school. But the way things are going, those arenÕ t likely to exist in the North Country for very much longer.

Another option, like the option floated by New Orleans, is tightening the screws on how the taxexempt status for nonprofits is granted.

Since municipalities within the Adirondack Park are automatically handicapped by the mandates that freeze our tax base, an additional layer of bureaucracy that paralyzes economic development, this should be actively discussed.

Our small towns need accessible value and revenue to sustain services.

Period.

Another option is imposing an ˆ la carte approach to services.

And lastly, as a nuclear option, we should explore the possibility of closing the tax-exempt door for hobbyists and outsider organizations that only serve a select, insular audience, including those with second homes elsewhere, outsiders dropped in from outside the region.

WhatÕ s the landscape of the Adirondack Park going to look like if this warped financial arrangement continues?

We understand money is tight all around and asking nonprofits to cough up more dough may tighten the nooses around the necks of those they serve, resulting in reduced services.

But is it fair for nearly 20 percent of the land in Essex County to be tax exempt?

One Hundred Years Ago – October, 1914 Lost in the Minerva woods

Carroll Pritchard, of Pottersville, had a terrifying experience recently when he was lost in the woods and wandered about all night, covering a distance of more than twenty-five miles.

Mr. Pritchard went hunting Friday afternoon, Oct. 23, 1914, near Aiden Lair, accompanied by Dr. George Bibby. They became separated and Prichard lost the trail. Until two oÕ clock in the morning he frantically tramped about seeking a way out of the forest. Then becoming exhausted, he laid down on the ground and slept until daylight.

When he finally got up and looked around he saw a house near by and recognizing the lay of the land, found he was in the neighborhood known as Irishtown, in Minerva. Dr. Bibby, in the meantime, organized a searching party and about 100 men scoured the woods all night in search of the missing man. Aside of the discomfort he suffered and the fright, the young man was no worse for his adventure.

Oil stove causes havoc

Ernest LaFlure, of Chestertown, about 6 oÕ clock Friday morning, lit an oil stove in the kitchen of his home up to its apparent full heating capacity. The lighted wick crept up and when Percy Culver entered the kitchen after the morningÕ s milking about 6:30 a.m., smoke filled the room.

The wainscoting, ceiling and overhead rooms were afire. The combined efforts of the household succeeded in extinguishing the fire with water, poured from pails.

Dumb move, fingers lost

A Port Henry school boy secured a dynamite fuse cap from one of his companions and fastened it on the end of a lead pencil.

While in school he struck it on his desk with considerable force.

There was an explosion and the boy lost three fingers and the thumb of his left hand. The deck was demolished.

In another school boy prank, Clarence Daggett, of North Thurman, while coasting down the cemetery hill on his bicycle, ran into the railing on the bridge and was thrown over it on to a pile of brush and poles. He badly hurt one of his legs and his side.

County home director lauded

Among the summer folk at Lake George, there are none who take a livelier interest in civic matters than Henry W. Hayden, a well known man and staunch Republican who resides in New York City during the winters and occupies the old Caldwell mansion House, built in 1803, the Hayden estate, in the village of Lake George, for many months in the summer.

He highly endorses Edward W. Griggs for re-election as Superintendent of the Poor at the Warren County Home.

Excitement at the Poor House

Frank W. Smith’s five- passenger Cadillac automobile was destroyed by fire the afternoon of Oct. 28, 1914 near the Warren County Home while Mr. Smith, accompanied by his wife, Bertha (Baker) Smith, was on his way to Bolton. The fire is supposed to have started from a leaking gas pipe. Mr. Smith tried to extinguish the flames with dirt, but was unable to do so. The loss is covered by insurance. (Note - Frank Smith was the popular

supervisor of Warrensburgh from 1925 until his untimely death in June of 1931. It is said that he never drove his car unless his dog, Ò BubblesÓ was sitting on the seat beside him. If he stayed at someoneÕ s house too long, Bubbles would blow the carÕ s horn when he grew tired of waiting for his master. The dog is buried next to Frank, with his own gravestone, in front of the new (west) side of the Warrensburgh Cemetery.)

On to higher learning

Louis W. Joseph, a graduate of the Warrensburgh High School, Class of 1914, who recently moved to New York City with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hart Joseph, has entered Columbia University on the certificate he received from the local school. (Note Ð Isaac Hart Joseph was born in Germany in 1852 and in Warrensburgh he married Theresa Weinman, the daughter of a former town supervisor and an owner of the Empire Shirt Company. In 1899 Hart Joseph became a partner in the company. The family lived in a 1902 Queen Anne mansion at 46 Elm Street which later became the home of Frank Smith who died there, as described above, in 1931 in a house fire. Hart Joseph died in 1926.)

Woodshed fire

A woodshed in the rear of Seth A. ReedÕ s house on Ridge Street was burned Saturday night, Oct. 24, 1914. An alarm was given about midnight by ringing the bell of the Methodist Church and quite a crowd gathered. A line of hose was stretched from the corner of Ridge and River Streets and protected the surrounding buildings. The flames had gained such headway that the burning structure could not be saved. It contained three cords of fire wood, some household goods and farming tools, all of which were destroyed. The loss is estimated at $200 and is fully covered by insurance. Odd Fellows lodge being built

The foundation has been started for a two-story and basement concrete building on Montcalm Street, Lake George, which will be the future home of the Odd Fellows lodge of that place. The entire building will be used for lodge purposes. The lot on which it will stand was given to the lodge by the late John M. Biglow, of Albany. The labor on the foundation will be contributed by Lake George workmen. It is expected that the building will be complete by winter.

In other news, a piazza is being built on the Bolton Landing Town Hall, a much needed improvement.

Stony Creek man dies

Columbus C. Cudney, 56, died Monday morning, Oct. 26, 1914 at his home in Stony Creek after a long illness of a complication of diseases. He leaves one son, Cloyes Cudney and a daughter, Miss Norma Cudney. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Lodema Cudney of Stony Creek, four brothers, Frank, Joseph, Theodore and Darius Cudney and one sister, Mrs. Fred C. Smith. Internment was in the Corinth Cemetery.

Dancing for a good cause

A Ò Rube Ball,Ó one of the most amusing affairs ever invented for the pleasure of dancers is to be given by the newly organized Ò We Do ThingsÓ club at Music Hall. The proceeds will be placed in a general fund and distributed among the needy as occasion

requires during the coming winter. Sweet charity is to receive the entire benefit of their efforts. Mrs. Charles F. Burhans is in charge.

Admission will be $1 per couple with extra ladies at 25 cents.

(Note – The Music Hall auditorium was on the second floor of a big building on the north corner of Main Street and Adirondack Avenue. The building burned last on Dec. 27, 1950.)

Home town boy makes good

Richard Whitby, 35, a former Warrensburgh boy, who began his musical career here as a member of the old CitizenÕ s Band and who has since been rapidly rising as a soloist on the slide trombone, has become a member of John Philip SousaÕ s famous concert band and is now on a tour with that organization, occupying the first chair in the trombone section. (Note – Dick Whitby was the son of Richard J. Whitby, superintendent of the Warrensburgh Woolen Mill. He died in 1952.)

Sweet and sour notes

A dispatch from Bucharest to the London Daily Telegraph says that cholera is spreading rapidly in Austria. Forty cases have been reported in Moravia and 120 cases in Galicia.

It snowed early Tuesday morning, Oct. 27, 1914 and the mornings are getting wintery. The mountains and hills were whitened by the fall.

Nearly all the farmers in Bakers Mills have their crops in and report potatoes and apples as bumper crops.

While hunting at Boreas River recently, a hunter is confident that he saw a silver fox. The fox swam the river near the hunter and after shaking himself on the shore, slipped into the bushes.

Hunting is the order of the day in this locality. Henry Combs, Robert Pasco, Eddie Frost, Ralph and Morgan Pasco, all of North Thurman, went into the Big Shanties region recently and killed five fine bucks.

George Wells, of Blue Mountain Lake, who accidentally shot himself through his foot is able to be out and about again.

Fire broke out in North Creek at the home of Herbert Wilcox, Thursday morning, Oct. 22, 1914, but due to a well organized fire department, it was quickly put out.

Mrs. Lee F. Stockton, who underwent a serious operation in the Glens Falls Hospital on Oct. 9, 1914, has been in critical condition during the past week suffering from blood poison.

A son was born to Mrs. Gardiner Harrington of Diamond Point on Oct. 23, 1914, weighing five pounds. The boy’s maternal grandmother, Mrs. Robert Millington, is caring for them.

Eben J. Hitchcock, of Bakers Mills, is employed by Melvin Campney, finishing up his new house. Stanley Brothers, of Riparius, has purchased a new Overland automobile.

Bottle the festival excitement To the Adirondack Journal: I am writing this in the afterglow of the 18th Adirondack Distance Festival and my first experience with this amazing Schroon Lake institution. As a life-long trial lawyer I have always been Ò somewhere elseÓ and not in our town for this amazing event. This year I dropped right into the middle of it as the Director of Public Safety. Ò The MarathonÓ was an amazing collection of moving parts.

Three towns (Chester, Schroon, Horicon), two counties (Warren and Essex), four police groups (Essex and Warren Sheriffs, State Po-

lice Troops B and G) and eight ambulance companies (from E-town south to Bolton Landing) all worked together like a well-oiled machine. Cheerleaders came from multiple schools. Hundreds of volunteers went where they were supposed to and did their jobs.

Spectators stood with water, cowbells and horns along the roads.

Roads were closed from 9 a.m. to nearly 3 p.m. without incident.

AND EVERYONE HAD A GREAT TIME! Kudos, of course, to Joel Friedman and his Team- an amazing group of people which I had the honor of joining this year. But the biggest CONGRATS goes to the people of the Schroon Lake Area!

They were clearly enthused and caught up in the community spirit.

They were joyful and cooperative and helpful to the thousands of guests and each other.

The Marathon Weekend clearly showed that Schroon LakeÕ s whole is greater than the sum of its parts. A large number of groups participated- Friends of the Library, the Lions, various churches, Word of Life, fire departments and ambulance squads, Schroon Lake Association, ESSLA, the Historical Society, municipal employees and many others. Everyone had one purpose- to make it the best day possible for the Town and its guests. And by the way, those guests had a great time. The Marathon has received a lot of positive feedback from runners and their families. They will be back. Last year a Kent State University study showed the Marathon brought $1,000,000 into our area economy. But money cannot match the joy of simply being here and being a part of this event.

The jewel in the crown of this wonderful blue skied weekend was our beautiful lake. Much of the race was along its crystal clear waters. The runners and their fans got to see how spectacular this place is and how blessed we are to be here. It made all the meetings, boat launch stewardship and political action to preserve our watershed worthwhile.

So let us all make a pledge to bottle the wonderful cooperative spirit we saw this weekend and let it out in small doses over the year. In the midst of freezing, gray weather and difficult policy and financial problems, let us open a bottle of September 28th sunshine and relive the cooperative spirit that made for such a great day.

People who need Obamacare To the Adirondack Journal: I have two relatives whose medical conditions would make them totally uninsurable without the Affordable Care Act (aka, Obamacare). Yet some politicians still advocate repeal. Why?!

Your article last week about Aaron Woolf and Elise Stefanik didnÕ t mention her current position on health care, but past articles cited that she favors repeal. Her publicity says that she stands for new ideas and new leadership, but there is nothing new or leader-like in that position. If she and her potential colleagues in Congress succeed, they must know they would be condemning a lot of people like my two relatives to death, because thatÕ s what would happen without the health care that nearly eight million Americans now have thanks to the ACA, which makes it illegal to deny insurance and care to folks with pre-existing conditions, etc.

Burghers put up a good fight against state-ranked Cambridge

Leonbruno said he was particularly proud of the BurghersÕ offensive line, and how aggressively they played against Cambridge.

He noted how Cambridge coach Doug Luke publicly praised the Burgher offensive line. After the game, Luke told the Post-Star, Ò They dominated our line of scrimmage.Ó Leonbruno said his offen-

sive line blocked well, opening up holes effectively for his running backs to gain significant yardage.

“This was the first week our offensive line players were all there Ñ and they played in unison,Ó he said of his athletes that pushed the Cambridge linemen Ñ most weighing from 235 to 295 pounds Ñ out of the way.

The Burghers had a number of solid drives, including one initial drive and another starting off the second half. Both of these drives were 14 plays long, amassing over 70 yards each. A half dozen others stalled far downfield, several of them stymied by turnovers.

Veteran running back Joey Schuster ran 166 yards on 23 plays, and Greg Shambo Ñ who was drafted this week to substitute for the talented but sidelined runner Donnie Stone Ñ gained 118 yards on 21 plays and scored a touchdown. Aiden Szabo gained 10 yards and racked up a touchdown.

Leonbruno said that his runners and linemen were synchronized well on Saturday. Ò Greg Shambo and Joey Schuster did a good job following the hole and running hard,Ó he said.

The $9.5 million health center is likely, however, to at least bear a plaque dedicating the facility to him.

Area officials said it was about time.

In 1974, Dr. Rugge Ñ a physician and outdoorsman who loved the rugged Adirondacks Ñ came to Chestertown to establish a practice that took care of citizensÕ vital health care needs, regardless of their income. With local doctors leaving the area, RuggeÕ s outreach soon expanded to Warrensburg, North Creek and Indian Lake Ñ and Hudson Headwaters Health Network was born. In subsequent years, the network mushroomed into 16 health centers spanning the lower Adirondacks.

For decades, heÕ s conferred with state legislators and executives in boosting health care standards and practices.

Rugge has served on a national commission on Medicaid reform, the state Hospital Review and Planning Council and heÕ s been a health care advisor to New York State state governors as well as former President Bill Clinton.

Rugge has been credited with re-engineering rural health services in the state and nation, to better coordinate care for people of all incomes by boosting the primary physicianÕ s role and expediting information between specialists and patientsÕ primary doctors. HeÕ s won state and national awards for his work.

While accomplishing all this, he simultaneously has been serving as the primary-care physician for a roster of patients.

Modestly, Rugge said Tuesday that the health center should be dedicated to the many people who have donated money towards the center, and all the practitioners of Hudson Headwaters that have contributed years of service. Various ex-

The new health center, envisioned to change the face of downtown Warrensburg, is several stories tall. It has 38,000 square feet of floor space, more than double the size of the existing center Ñ a cement-block former grocery store that was for decades HHHNÕ s headquarters.

The new facility is to be equipped and staffed to provide primary care for 8,000 people in Warrensburg, Thurman and portions of adjacent towns, plus a total of 25,000 people in surrounding communities as well.

With no less than 48 exam rooms, the health center is expected to eventually host an array of new specialty health services Ñ to be accomplished through an expanded partnership with Glens Falls Hospital and area practitioners. The new specialized services envisioned for the future include cancer care, asthma care and cardiac care.

Rugge said Tuesday that establishing these additional services would be pursued after the staff was settled into their new center. Services to be expanded initially include ear, nose and throat health; urology and neurology; as well as obstetrical and gynecological services. Ò In continuing discussions with Glens Falls Hospital officials, we are all hopeful that additional services can be offered,Ó

he said.

Rugge said the new Warrensburg Health Center Ñ 38,000 square feet in size or more than double existing center Ñ should be virtually complete in late January, then opened to the public in early March.

Soon after the new center is hosting patients, HHHN will likely be opening yet another health center in Queensbury, adjacent to their West Mountain Primary Care Center, which is to be expanded as well with 2,110 feet of new floor space to host palliative care services.

The new building, to be 28,000 square feet or two-and-a-half times the size of the primary care center on Carey Road, was approved about two months ago by the Queensbury planning board.

This $5 million facility, a new urgent and primary care center, is being developed because of a pressing demand for health care services that was apparent soon after the first HHHN center off Northway Exit 18 opened in early 2012, Rugge said. Ò We had a totally full patient load in a matter of months after opening the West Mountain center,Ó he said.

Hudson HeadwatersÕ 16 health centers are on track to host 320,000 patient visits in 2014, and projections call for that number to soar to 377,000 in 2015.

Hudson HeadwatersÕ scope and size is exponentially larger than Rugge ever imagined in the early 1970s, when he opened a clinic in a home on Main St. in Chestertown, then established the Warrensburg center in the vacant A&P grocery store a few years later. Ò This is nothing anyone could have expected,” he said. “My first impression was IÕ d be practicing (in Chestertown) for six months, and then IÕ d be out.Ó Warrensburg Supervisor Kevin Geraghty, who also serves as Chairman of the Warren County Board of Supervisors, said dedicating the building to Rugge was appropriate. Ò HeÕ s had quite a good vision for rural health care,Ó Geraghty said, noting that the new facility not only anchors downtown Warrensburg, but will be providing dozens of new local jobs.

Bolton’s chili winner announced

For the second consecutive year, Market Place Steakhouse and More is the Wooden Spoon winner for their entry into BoltonÕ s Best Chili Contest sponsored by the Bolton Landing Chamber of Commerce. ROCHESTER Ñ Gabrielle LeBihan of Brant Lake earned Nazareth CollegeÕ s athlete of the week honor for the week ending Sept. 22. LeBihan, member of the womenÕ s cross country team, was Nazareth’s top finisher at the Yellowjacket Invitational at Genesee Valley Park Saturday as she finished 9th in a field of 283 runners with a time of 2:32.1 for 6 kilometers. Nazareth finished 10th in the team standings. Lebihan is a junior communication and media major at Nazareth College and is competing in her second season as a Golden Flyer. She was NazarethÕ s top runner in 2013 and earned first-team Empire 8 Conference all-star honors.

Race for the 21st

Funiciello, Stefanik and Woolf speak out on the issues ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ Voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 4 to select a replacement for outgoing Congressman Bill Owens, the federal representative for New YorkÕ s 21st Congressional District.

Owens, a Democrat from Plattsburgh, is retiring in January after two full terms.

Three candidates are running to replace him: Republican Elise Stefanik, of Willsboro, Democrat Aaron Woolf, of Elizabethtown, and Green Party candidate Matt Funiciello, of Glens Falls.

We asked each candidate a set of identical questions covering issues that we felt would be of interest to our readers, including how they view public service, if they would vote along partisan lines if elected and how their proposed policies would directly impact residents of the district.

The hour-long interviews were conducted in-person with our editorial board, which included Publisher Dan Alexander, Managing Editor John Gereau, Southern Bureau Chief Keith Lobdell and Reporter Pete DeMola.

Question: What do you see as the major issues you personally can address and have any impact on resolving?

Answer: Ò My platform: ending corporate welfare, single-payer health care and raising the minimum wage,Ó said Funiciello, of Glens Falls.

Funiciello said he wants to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour. He dismissed the argument that doubling the wage of fast food workers, to name one cohort, would also double prices, citing Sweden as an example, where the hike resulted in only nominal bumps in consumer prices. Ò IÕ d be willing to pay an extra 60 cents [per hamburger] so my neighbor can make a living,Ó he said.

Answer: Ò As I travel throughout the district, the number one issue I hear about is jobs and the economy, and specifically, how to encourage rural economic development in not just one portion of the district, but in the entirety of the 21st District.Ó The candidate discussed a number of federal level proposals and how to increase the focus on ways to support local economic growth.

At the federal level, Stefanik said the tax burdens on small businesses, middle class families and small farms are too high. Ò We need to simplify tax code: throw it out and start from scratch.Ó

Answer: Ò The major issues are the issues in the district that IÕ m hearing on the campaign trail: infrastructure, jobs and small business,Ó said Woolf. Ò We should want politicians that listen.

I’m not running to be a historic figure, but someone to represent the 21st.Ó Citing firms like Corning, General Electric and IBM, the documentary filmmaker said New York has been the incubator for some of the countryÕ s greatest businesses.

Cutting edge rural infrastructure, he said, should be a longterm investment to help grow the economy.

Question: As a congressman do you really have control over job creation in the private sector? And if so, specifically how?

Answer: Funiciello said jobs are often made part of the Congressional resume, like when incumbent Congressman Bill Owens attracted subway car manufacturer Bombardier to Plattsburgh. ÒB ut that could have been done as a private person,Ó said the candidate. ÒJ ob creation should be the last thing done in Congress.Ó Funiciello said the Green Party is focused on redirecting corporate welfare money, including the funds used to prop up the military and prison industrial complexes, into building infrastructure.

Answer: Ò My long answer early on addresses that,Ó the candidate laughed. Ò But I do think there are immediate steps that can be taken at the federal level to roll back some of the anti-job regulation from this administration to make healthcare more affordable for small businesses and individuals that will help spur job growth.Ó Repealing the medical device tax will have an immediate impact on the district, she said. Ò I think immediately, IÕ ll be able to show the leadership to create jobs.Ó

Answer: Ò Yes, absolutely. I would work to rebuild trust in government and bring that North Country can-do-ism to Washington.Ó Woolf said he had a long track record of producing concrete results in the North Country, including the Go Digital or Go Dark campaign that he co-founded. The Regional Economic CouncilÕ s Common Ground Alliance also helped Woolf better understand mechanicians for bipartisan action.

In Washington, Woolf said he would do the same thing. Ò The stakes are really high,Ó he said.

Question: Class warfare, the war on women, racial injustices, immigration — Isn’t there a better way to appeal to your base without putting people into classes and pitting them against one another?

Answer: Ò If I wasnÕ t ardently running as working class representative, then IÕ d say yes,Ó said Funiciello. Ò But I have to plead guilty: class warfare is a good thing.Ó Funiciello cited the financial backing of his opponents and their personal assets. Ò It is possible to be a millionaire with honesty,Ó he said. Ò But what about ten million?Ó Ninety percent of the American population arenÕ t millionaires, said Funiciello. As such, Congress needs voices who can represent the working class.

Answer: Ò I do think there is a better way to appeal not only to the base, but to all voters. People are getting tired of the political process; theyÕ re tired of the negativity and theyÕ re tired of the identity politics.Ó The candidate said it was important for this district, in particular, to be an independent voice and accessible to the voters.

Stefanik said some of best ideas from the campaign trail have been suggestions from voters in the district, people like business owners, young single moms and students.

The process, she said, has been a good way to overcome much of the negative identity politics.

Answer: Ò I think politicians far too often exploit those kinds of rhetoric,Ó said Woolf.

While the candidate called the War on Women idea a tagline and a marketing catchphrase, he said he agreed with the substance underlying the terminology. Ò I think IÕ m a much stronger candidate on womenÕ s issue than my female opponent,Ó said Woolf. Ò Elise Stefanik was against Paycheck Fairness before she was for it. As the 2012 Policy Director for the Republican Party Platform, she opposed the partyÕ s platform on abortion. She comes from a very radical Republicanism that is not in line with voters in district.Ó

Question: What can you do to bring the debt under control when no elected official is willing to address the tough issues that affect their voting base?

Answer: Ò I am a capitalist. We all suffer together. The national debt is $17 trillion. One of the major ways to [bring the debt under control] is to establish a centralized bank to control and isolate our own economic expenditures as a country.Ó The North American Free Trade Agreement, said the candidate, was in essence, a Republican measure passed by centrist Democrats in order to give the agreement a bipartisan seal.

In the district, he said, a tough choice would be determining the future of Fort Drum. Funiciello said he would focus on keeping 10,000 people employed, not investing in large-scale defense systems that does little to build long-term sustainability.

Answer: Ò The debt is a generational issue and I have talked about that more than any other candidate. I think I have a voice to do that because my generation will be inheriting the debt and other generations will be left with this.Ó Stefanik is 30. Her Democratic opponent, Aaron Woolf, is 50 while Green Party candidate Matt Funiciello is 46.

The average child born today is born into $40,000 of debt, she noted. Ò This president has racked up more debt that presidents Reagan to Washington combined.Ó If working families should have to balance their budgets, said the candidate, then so should Congress.

Aaron Woolf (D,W) Answer: Ò

We have to bring the debt under control. This is no joke. When you take debt and put it with the dysfunction in Congress, you get the type of scenario where the US fails to be the US we want it to be. Our spending is not growing. We need to grow the economy and address debt.

My opponent talks about the failed policies of [President] Obama, but unemployment has just come down to 5.9 percent.

We need to grow the economy. Our roads and bridges are falling apart. My ways of raising revenue donÕ t contribute to the debt,Ó the candidate said.

Question: What do you see as the best and the worst elements of the Affordable Care Act and how can we move forward without wasting the efforts of the past six years?

Answer: At its worst, said the candidate, the ACA is unconstitutional. Ò ItÕ s an insurance company bailout,Ó he said.

The solution is enacting single-payer health care by passing HR-676, the Expanded & Improved Medicare For All Act that would reduce the age of Medicare to zero. The ACA would then be rendered as unnecessary because all Americans will then have health care, explained Funiciello.

Funiciello said he agreed with the provision of the ACA that prohibited insurers from turning down applicants with pre-existing conditions.

Answer: The two worst aspects, said the candidate, are the aforementioned medical device tax, something she said has led to direct job losses, and the employer mandate, a measure that Stefanik said has encouraged small businesses to keep their staffs under 50 employees.

A third element, said Stefanik, was that small businesses are going through cancellations. Ò We have 16 employees in our business,Ó she said. Ò You donÕ t have the human resources and capability as larger companies have.Ó One positive was that young people have been allowed to stay on their parentsÕ plans up until a higher age.

Answer: The ACA covers 38,000 kids in the district who could have been turned down for pre-existing conditions, said Woolf.

Overall, it covers 23 percent of residents in district, a clear expansion of coverage for people who never would have been covered before.

“I’m definitely not in favor of repeal,” he said.

Woolf said the legislation is also bringing down costs, citing that health care costs are now rising lower than the rate of inflation.

On the flipside, Woolf said he didn’t like government intrusion and the medical device tax, something he said punishes success.

Question: Where do you stand on term limits?

I support term limits. I would vote in favor of term limits and I have publicly said that if IÕ m lucky enough to win the support of this district, not just this time, but multiple times, IÕ ve term-limited myself to ten years.Ó

Answer: Woolf said there was no magic wand to rid DC of its cronyism and it was difficult to discuss limits without also discussing the seniority system that sees committee chairs and other influential positions being awarded to longtime members of Congress.

Matt Funiciello (G) Answer:

The candidate said if his bid was successful, it would be the first time in recent history that third-party candidate would be elected. Ò This is public service and it shouldnÕ t be like winning the lottery,Ó he said in regards to term limits.

Question: Is getting this job about you or about the country? And if about the country, then why do you need health care and a pension in order to serve?

Ò This is about this district. If you see the amount of young people that are leaving this district, my demographic is leaving in historic numbers. ItÕ s gotten harder for [small businesses] to grow because of the challenges that small businesses face. Instead of growing, itÕ s gotten harder for them to grow due to government overreach.Ó Stefanik said she believed Congress needed to live by the same laws as the average person and should not get subsidies for their health care coverage.

Answer: ÒK nowing what I know now, I donÕ t think anyone would put themselves through this process,Ó l aughed Woolf.

The candidate said he loved this part of the world more than any other and was fortunate enough to have found success in filmmaking, a field that eludes most.

He said he was dismayed when Congressman Bill Owen announced his retirement last January. ÒWh oÕ s going to run for that seat?Ó recalled Woolf, citing what he said was OwensÕ Òt houghtful and caringÓ service to the district.

Matt Funiciello (G) Answer: Ò I donÕ t need health care to serve and I will not accept insurance until my workers have it,Ó said Funiciello.

The salary, he said, would be necessary because he makes $40,000 per year and has no retirement or savings that would fund his travels back and forth from Washington as well as a residence.

On gold-plated benefits, Funiciello said while members of Congress are overpaid, he would rather withhold judgement before making Ò bold declarative statements.Ó

Answer:

Question: What can you do in Washington to get Congress focused on the major issues facing the country instead of political grandstanding for the benefit of your party?

Ò I think this president has been incredibly partisan, including during the past few months as weÕ ve headed into this election cycle. I think itÕ s really important by day one of this next congress, thereÕ s a commitment to tackle these big issues, whether itÕ s tax reform or reigning in our spending. And I believe the more voices we have in Washington having that type of accountability will be really important.Ó The candidate also said she would Ò driveÓ legislation. Ò If I earn the support of this district, I do not aspire to be a backbencher.Ó

Answer: Woolf cited an anecdote from King Corn, his 2007 documentary film that sought to address the role of federal corn subsidies in American society.

“I succeeded in my career because I could find human story to shine light on policymaking,Ó he said.

“I think my ability to find North Country stories will be a persuasive tool in Congress. To my knowledge, thereÕ s never been documentary filmmaker elected to Congress.”

Matt Funiciello (G) Answer:

Funiciello said the question of being a Democrat or Republican isn’t as relevant as the corporate influence behind both political parties.

The candidate cited OwensÕ previous comments on the dysfunction in Washington that prohibited meaningful change, one of the factors underpinning his retirement.

Freshman representatives, said Funiciello, have little power to determine legislation that would benefit their constituents and become backbenchers who are trotted out for floor votes.

Answer:

Congressman Owens proved he was willing to vote his conscience by crossing party lines on 35 percent of his votes. Would you be willing to do the same?

Ò ItÕ s quite easy for me to cross party lines because there are no lines,Ó said Funiciello.

He cited the SAFE Act as one example of how he broke with his party. Ò I grew up with a .22. I love guns. These are not things urban Greens understand.Ó

Answer: Ò I would be and have demonstrated that over the course of the campaign,Ó said Stefanik.

The candidate said there are several key areas, including agricultural and northern border issues, that are inherently partisan, while other areas, including armed services issues, would require working with other members of the stateÕ s delegation.

Answer: Ò I will vote for best legislation for this part of the country. I donÕ t care if it originates with the Democrats, Republicans or a martian.Ó
