Town board requests lower speed limit on Olmsteadville Road

CHESTERTOWN | The Chester Town Board authorized the application to reduce the speed limit on Olmsteadville Road in a three-quarter mile section of road where there is a history of accidents.

Residents described an “S” shaped turn about one mile from the intersection of Olmsteadville Road and Route 9, where they said there have been numerous collisions with the guardrail.

The guardrail shows signs of having been struck by vehicles.

Resident David LaPell said there have been at least 20 accidents in the three years he has lived there. Residents

LaPell said the Warren County Sheriff’s Office placed a patrol car on Olmsteadville Road and in three hours had written seven or eight speeding tickets.

Lt. Peter DiFiore, patrol lieutenant with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, responded to an email asking for details, and he said he referred questions about the tickets and accidents on Olmsteadville Road to Sgt. B. Geisler, who runs the traffic portion of the WCSO operation.

DiFiore said Warren County Sheriff’s Office officers have been monitoring for speeding violators on Olmsteadville Road in the area of David Road after residents reported excessive speeding and citing a number of motor vehicle crashes in the past several years.

DiFiore said the Warren County Sheriff’s Office assigned patrol officers to dedicated traffic enforcement, known as STEP details.

On Sept. 14, DiFiore said six traffic tickets were issued on Olmsteadville Road since Aug. 24.

He said three were for excessive speed, and the remaining three were issued for various vehicle and traffic law offenses.

“Members assigned to the STEP detail will continue to check on these complaints for the next several weeks,” DiFiore said. ■ RIGHT: Residents along Olmsteadville Road, especially those living near David Road, have complained about vehicles speeding through the area where the speed limit drops near an “S” curve. Residents say a number of vehicles have failed to negotiate the curve and struck the guardrail.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office has stepped up traffic enforcement and will continue to monitor the area for at least several weeks.

Marriage officiant appointed in Chester

CHESTERTOWN | The Fern Lodge will be able to provide someone to provide someone to perform weddings at the lodge after the Chester Town Board voted 5-0 to appoint Susan Adonucci as a wedding officiant.

Adonucci, an employee of the lodge, made the request at the August town board meeting to saying the Fern Lodge was seeing more and more couples wanting to get married there, and it was not always possible to find an officiant. Having an officiant on the staff means the guests have another option.

Sharon Taylor, owner of the Fern Lodge said they have one to three couples each week requesting to be married at the lodge.

“We do extremely small weddings,” Taylor said, adding the lodge can handle up to 22 people. “We do a lot of elopements.”

“Elopement” has a different connotation than it had in the past when young people would run away and get married to avoid

conflict with disapproving parents or even getting married on the spur of the moment.

Taylor said an elopement doesn’t mean the wedding wasn’t planned.

“In a lot of cases, they chose elopement with families being so spread out or perhaps having multiple family groups because of divorces or it’s hard to put dates together for everyone,” she said.

Taylor said sometimes in the case of second marriages, when the couple might have had a big wedding at one time, they would like a simpler, but still meaningful, ceremony. Some couples, she said, will just post an announcement on Facebook saying they are married.

Taylor said the lodge will generally arrange for a clergy person or a judge from any town to perform the weddings. She said some people express a preference for whom they would like to marry them.

“Some people prefer a man or woman or a clergy person,” she said.

Taylor said there are licensed clergy people who are ordained by mainstream churches and those ordained by other means, including by online or through nondenominational churches. She said judges or justices are limited to performing a standard service without religious references.

“Some people want a clergy member to bring in the religious aspect,” Taylor said.

Taylor said some people want to marry and honeymoon at Friends Lake. She said wedding plans and the judges’ schedules don’t always match, and Adonucci will be one other option the guests have for getting married and having a meaningful wedding service.

Getting married, buried will cost more in Chestertown Cost of marriage license, cemetery corners rising

CHESTERTOWN | If you want to get married in Chestertown or mark your cemetery plot, it will now cost you a little more money.

The Chester Town Board approved fee increases Sept. 12, including raising the cost of a marriage license by $5.

Town clerk Mindy Conway told the town board the increase would put Chester’s marriage license fee at $40 and bring it in line with most other New York towns.

Conway also recommended the town increase the fee for cemetery corners — or markers indicating where the plot or plots are located — from $150 to $200, bringing the cost in line to what the town needs to cover costs.

In other business, Councilwoman Karen Durose, reporting on a meeting with the North Warren Emergency Medical Service squad said the EMS board had asked about receiving in-kind services from the town, such as snow plowing.

Attorney Mark Schachner said the request could be made to the highway department, but the department would

have to be amenable to providing the services.

The Chester Town Board also passed the following resolutions: Resolution 1 set a tentative date of Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. for its first budget meeting.

Resolution 2 authorized the signing of 2018 Youth Recreational Program agreements with Warren County, in the amount of $2,375.

Resolution 3 authorized the clerk to advertise for bids for the BTI program, which is a bacterial treatment for black flies. Leggett said the town has come to the end of a three-year agreement with Bioconservation, Inc. Resolution 4 authorized an agreement with the YMCA for the Youth Recreational Program.

Resolution 5 authorized an application top reduce the speed limit on Olmsteadville Road in Pottersville.

Resolution 6 appointed Aaron Brothers to the to the Board of Assessment Review.

Resolution 7 appointed David Gross to the North Warren EMS Board of Directors to fill an unexpired term.

Gross was appointed to Dec. 31, 2017.

Resolution 8 accepted the resignation of Adele Treston from the Library Board of Trustees.

Resolution 9 authorized the advertisement and sale of a 2003 Ford F250

pick-up truck with a minimum bid of $1,000.

Resolution 10 set a date of Sept.

27 at 7 p.m. for a public hearing on a septic system variance application for the Gleason property on Ataketa Road.

Resolution 11 set the date and place for the next Chester Town Board meeting on Oct. 10, at 7 p.m., at the Pottersville Volunteer Fire Company, Valley Farm Road, Pottersville, pending approval of the fire company.

Resolution 12 set the new rates for marriage licenses and cemetery corners.

Resolution 13 authorized application for a 2018 LARAC grant for the youth theater production of “Billy Goats Gruff.”

Resolution 14 authorized seven planning and zoning board members to attend the 5th annual Southern Adirondack Planning and Zoning Conference on Oct. 3 in Lake George, and pay for registration and mileage.

Resolution 15 authorized the payment of bills. ■

Lake Placid Brewfest to showcase growth of beer biz Craft beer industry is surging in U.S. — including here in the Adirondacks

LAKE PLACID | It’s go time for craft beer, and lovers of suds will have plenty to celebrate at the Lake Placid Brewfest.

The event returns for its sixth year on Saturday, Sept. 23 at the Olympic Center’s 1932 Rink.

Dozens of vendors will participate, both local craft breweries and those from as far away as Maine, including the York-based SoMe Brewing Company.

“We love it,” said David Rowland, head brewer. “It gets better every year.”

Rowland has an Adirondack connection: His father once lived in Jay, and Rowland was a frequent visitor to the Olympic Village.

“Really for us, it’s a great excuse to go back home and see people and share our beer,” Rowland said.

Rowland will be showcasing three SoMe beers he feels will be a good representation of their seven-barrel operation: Their flagship Whoopie Pie Stout (“We didn’t bring it one year, and people got mad,”

Rowland quipped), Nubble Weiss — a German-style sour wheat beer — and Apostrophe IPA, a new creation that’s gaining traction with its big fruit flavor and citrusforward aroma.

“Our M.O. has always been ‘something for everyone,’” Rowland said.

About a dozen local brewers from the North Country’s tightly-knit beer scene will also participate, including Raquette River Brewing, whose Imperial Pumpkin Ale took the People’s Choice Award last year.

While the Tupper Lake-based brewery is going for a repeat, they will do so with a different invention.

“We’ve got a couple of other surprises,” said Joe Hockey, owner.

Business is booming in the craft beer industry — the market volume share for craft brewers has more than doubled to 12.3 percent since 2011 — and the regional scene is no different.

Despite their popularity, Raquette River Brewing participates in just one event per year.

“Our growth has been so rapid, we just don’t have time,” Hockey said.

The brewery is in the process of their third expansion in a little over three years, from a two, to four to a 10-barrel system that will go online this month, allowing them to produce 2,000 barrels of beer annually — more than doubling their production.

Beer and outdoor activities go hand-inhand, Hockey said, and the Adirondacks is primed to capitalize on the popularity of both.

“There’s a huge demand for it.”

Nationwide, craft beer is a $23.5 billion industry.

Craft brewing and spirit production is surging in New York — the state is now home to at least 320 breweries, according to the New York State Brewers Association — due to a series of legislative and economic incentives, including the creation of the Farm Brewery License, tax credits for brewers and modernization of the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Law. Promotional funding and high-profile press — including state-sponsored beer summits and contests attended by the governor himself — hasn’t hurt.

Ausable Brewing Company is also undergoing an expansion that will allow the Keeseville-based operation to boost production and expand their hours.

The brewery, which hosts a popular summertime event series, nearly ran out of beer in August.

“We’re brewing three or four times a week to keep up, but it’s just not enough,” said Dylan Badger, co-owner.

While Badger, who operates the brewery with his brother, Dan, is still zeroing in on what to bring to the brewfest, expect an Oktoberfest and something called a Wayne Legitzky, or a pale ale in honor of “how legit” the Canadian hockey legend is.

“We always try to be unique in bringing something interesting,” Badger said.

The biz is indeed growing, said the brewer. But the trend will start to slow down at some point.

“We’re seeing it grow at incredible rates now, and that’s going to end,” Badger said.

“A lot of smart brewers need to find a place in the industry now before things start to go the other way.”

Smaller breweries with loyal local followings may be better positioned to ride out the wave than mid-sized breweries, he said.

Badger envisions a scenario where midsized operations — companies large enough to sell in a taproom but not enough for guaranteed retail shelf space — might be squeezed into increasingly competitive skirmishes with larger microbreweries to remain sustainable and hold onto their market share.

Hockey said he’s unsure of the industry’s future, but it’s evident that the trend towards buying local isn’t subsiding anytime soon.

“Every 10 days, there’s another brewery opening in New York State,” Hockey said.

“Is there a bubble? I don’t see it bursting anytime soon.”

Great Brant Duck Race slated

HORICON | While it’s not necessarily part of an annual bird migration, as many as 2,000 ducks are expected to appear on Brant Lake on Saturday, Oct. 7.

At precisely the “quack of noon,” the Great Brant Lake Duck Race will begin, with cash prizes for the first three ducks to cross the finish line.

The Great Brant Lake Duck Race is an annual event organized by the North Warren Chamber and Horicon Ladies Auxiliary, and sponsored by the Town of Horicon. The day actually begins with a free pancake breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Horicon Fire Company. From 10 a.m. to noon, there will be carnival games with prizes for kids, including Limbo, Corn Hole, and Ball Maze.

The main event is the Great Brant Lake

Duck Race, which takes place at the Mill Pond on the south end of Brant Lake. North Warren Chamber Administrative Manager Lynn Engelmann said duck tickets go on sale for “A Buck A Duck” before Oct. 7 and will also be sold from 9 to 11:30 a.m. the day of the race. Tickets are available at the North Warren Chamber Visitor Center 3 Dynamite Hill off Route 8 in Chestertown.

“In prior years, we have launched over 2,000 ducks,” Englemann said in press release.

Debra Eves, marketing manager at the North Warren chamber, said there are generally between 1,200 and 1,500 ducks. At $1 per duck, half the total will support the chamber and Horicon Ladies Auxiliary.

The other half of the 50/50 will be divided between the top three finishers. Winners need not be present to win.

Following the race, there will be free pumpkin painting for the kids, sponsored by the Friends

of the Horicon Free Library, at the pavilion behind the Horicon Fire Station. The day will also feature white elephant tables and craft/specialty vendors. If you are interested in having a space or need more information about the event, call Lynn or Debra at the Chamber at 518-494-2722.

On the same day, the Lazy Moose Garden Market in Brant Lake is having its annual fall festival, which is held every year on the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend. Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., the Lazy Moose will have local artisans and crafters; activities for kids and adults; raffles; barbecue; mums; pumpkins; and cornstalks. ■

North Country Singers seeking members Choir has been based in North Creek for 40 years

JOHNSBURG | The North Country Singers is looking for interested members as the choir starts preparing for its annual Holiday Celebration, Dec. 2-3.

According to choir director Denise Conti, the adult choir regularly meets during the school year, with most of the singers coming from places such as Johnsburg, North Creek, Chestertown, and Minerva, some coming from Indian Lake.

“We normally have about a 40-voice choir,” Conti said.

Conti said the choir generally does three concerts per year, beginning with the Holiday Celebration and ending with spring concert in May. She said at that time the choir performs with her daughter’s Select Choir from her school in Queensbury. In addition, she said they usually perform in nursing homes.

Conti said she has been working on 10 pieces of music for the Holiday Celebration, which will also feature some

dancers, soloists, and special readings.

Conti said the North Country Singers will have been around for 40 years in the spring, a;though the name has changed over the years. She said the choir was started by Tudi Severance in 1978 as the Festival Praise Choir. Conti, who taught at the Johnsburg Central School for 32 years and was the choral director, became the next director, but she stepped down for a few years. In her absence, Bill Nickerson took over changed the choir’s name to the Millennium Chorus, to correspond with the arrival of the 21st century.

“After a few years I came back, and the Millennium had passed, and we changed the name to the North Country Singers,” Conti said.

Conti, who is the vice-president of the Tannery Pond Community Center, said she is very pleased with the center’s auditorium.

“We are so fortunate to have it. The sound is perfection, the sound quality, and it is user-friendly,” she said.

The North Country Singers meet on Monday nights at 7 p.m. in the band room at Johnsburg Central School, 165 Main St., North Creek, where they will be rehearsing for the annual Holiday Celebration at Tannery Pond Community Center on Dec. 2 and 3. ■

Solutions are never easy

I hope we can all agree that the many issues facing our country are not easily solved.

By Dan Alexander While many grow • PUBLISHER • fatigued from the constant arguing back and forth, it’s clear that conversational debate far outweighs violence driven by pent-up frustration.

We understand that violence is the course of last resort and sadly the cost of settling issues in that manner takes a terrible toll on all involved, even the most innocent.

Writing a column each week and touching on subjects we all grapple with is an opportunity to initiate important dialogue.

Being a lightning rod for conversation, criticism and praise at the end of each week’s work demonstrates the important role a community newspaper can have in its service to the community. A major part of being a strong community newspaper is to provide a forum for open commentary.

One important benefit from the columns are the many exchanges that take place as a result of the topic.

What’s most encouraging is when readers engage with letters to the editor, offering their points of view, as well the many back-channel conversations that take place through letters, emails, face to face conversations in parking lots, schools, grocery stores, church or even over a few cold ones.

But the truly remarkable conversations take place when readers take up the debate with other readers unbeknownst to anyone associated with the paper.

It’s through these conversations that we begin to chip away at the differences that divide us and we begin to understand the issues from a different perspective.

Over time, it’s how we arrive at solutions, that today seem inconceivable, but down the road make it hard to understand what all the fuss was about.

We know that the fiercest opponents one minute can become the greatest of allies in the next.

Many of the major issues we’ve faced, evolved over time and while our conversations are but grains of sand in the hourglass of time, it’s how we go about processing the information and the emotions to arrive at solutions that put us on the road to recovery.

Most of us don’t like confrontation but the reality is, more opinions are change as a result of open and honest dialogue.

Living in this great land of freedom and respecting our constitutional rights to disagree, the one thing we must always remember is to participate in the process. ■

State legislature should support mausoleum moratorium It’s been 18 months since over a hundred residents packed the Plattsburgh Town Hall expressing shock, astonishment and heartbreak over the situation at the Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens.

The exact sequence of events leading to the abandonment of a pair of mausoleums remains unclear, including a suspicious fire that destroyed years of records years ago.

But the end result is a pair of burial grounds whose deterioration has been heartbreaking.

Designed and branded as luxurious resting places, the facilities in Plattsburgh and Ellenburg were instead built using cheap materials and left to moulder since their construction in the 1980s.

The roof at the Ellenburg facility has disintegrated to the extent that snowfall has dusted internal crypts.

In Plattsburgh, the back of the concrete structure has never been completed, leaving warped and weather-scarred plywood to be exposed to the elements.

Windows adorning the columbarium are cracked, outdoor plots have been ignored and light bulbs have burned out, among other cosmetic issues — including unpleasant odors that have left survivors aghast.

Interment at the facilities was not cheap, costing thousands of dollars. Like with traditional cemeteries, the proceeds of the crypt sales were supposed to be put in a perpet-

ual care fund designed to allow for eternal upkeep of the properties.

But not only have those funds disappeared, a state report determined the nonprofit which owned the facilities failed to repay loans they were permitted to withdraw from the fund.

The outstanding balance for the permanent maintenance fund was $212,399 as of 2015.

What happened?

No one is talking, including the former owners, who local officials have said are being probed by the state attorney general’s office for their possible role in this disastrous series of events.

The state has committed $2 million for repairs slated to begin this fall, and the facilities will be handed over to the respective towns once completed next year.

State officials have said the situation has presented a peculiar case with few precedents.

What a final indignity to the hundreds of decreased and their survivors.

Our heart breaks for them. This isn’t supposed to happen in the United States — not in Plattsburgh, not in Ellenburg, not anywhere.

That’s why we support the legislation proposed by our state representatives designed to prevent something like this from ever happening again in New York.

State Sen. Betty Little (R-Queensbury)

has introduced a bill that would ban freestanding mausoleums as the only form of internment at burial grounds.

Mausoleums like those in Plattsburgh and Ellenburg have proven to be successful for many cemeteries when they are part of a larger financial plan and presented as an additional option for cemeteries, according to the bill language.

But when a cemetery is created solely for the purpose of hosting a standalone mausoleum, local governments and other entities are exposed to financial hardship if a facility is subsequently abandoned.

The legislation remains in committee, and is accompanied by companion legislation sponsored by state Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay).

While the construction of freestanding mausoleums may no longer be the lucrative industry it was once, trends in the funeral industry are always shifting. As the earliest Baby Boomers begin to shuffle off this mortal coil, we’ve already seen shifts in burial rituals and traditions.

The industry needs tighter regulation, and we strongly encourage lawmakers across the state to support this legislation.

Doing so is not just a way to shield localities from financial hardship, but is also a moral imperative. ■ — Sun Community News Editorial Board

Turning back the pages Adirondack 102 Club REMINISCENCE OF A PAST TRAGEDY Gathering slated

It is a strange thing how a past tragedy, long ago and forgotten, can unexpectedly break through time and space and re-tell us the story just one more time.

I was on a house cleaning binge and retrieved a bag of nearly forgotten items from my store room that had survived a long ago house fire, to sort out and throw away. I found an old, yellowed moldy newspaper clipping there that was water soaked, rotting, falling apart and unsalvageable. It looked as if it had once been pasted in a scrap book. The words were still legible, and I carefully read it. The clipping, which was labeled June 18, 1908, was 109 years old. I found the story, undoubtedly written by editor John L. Tubbs, so interesting that I carefully copied all of the words into my computer and printed out a copy for posterity before I reluctantly threw the original away.

A SORROWFUL STORY RECALLED

Mrs. George Gleason, a lady that lived on River Street in Warrensburgh, suddenly disappeared one day, and after five weeks of ceaseless vigilance and worry on the part of her relatives and friends, no more information was to be found as to her whereabouts.

At the turn of the century, Adirondack spring logging was an important industry and the Schroon river, especially in the area of the Grist Mill, was always chocked with logs, a common sight. People living on River Street, between the Gristmill and nearby Baker’s store, complained of a terrible stench arising from that point in the jam of logs.

The saw mill of A.C. Emerson, adjacent to the Grist Mill, was shut down for repairs.

Taking advantage of the low water, David M. Woodward, 68, a member of the firm who lived nearby on the corner of Hadden Hill (Ridge Street) and River Street, decided to investigate one evening after dinner and, if possible, find some cause for the offensive smell. He was married to Mrs. Gleason’s sister.

With concentrated earnestness, he carefully treaded his way over the wedged logs and soon detected a disagreeable odor and upon close observation could see a piece of dark dress goods and finally a human hand.

LADY FOUND AT LAST

To quote Mr. Tubbs, “Impulsively satisfied that he had brought to light the solution to a mystery on the dark side of a human life, Mr. Woodward summoned help to break away the logs which had become lodged at the point since the river driving had began.

Willing hands soon made an opening in the jam and the body of Mrs. Gleason was found out of water caught in the logs. Sheets and a blanket were procured and the remains, which were in a terrible state of decomposi-

Newcomers to the North Country?

To the Editor: I must have missed the influx of Southern Rebels who moved to the Adirondacks, but there’s no mistaking the displays of “Stars & Bars” flying from porch roofs and pick-up trucks.

What these newcomers don’t understand is how many Adirondack men suffered and died on Southern soil to save the Union.

Nelson Goff from Lewis enlisted, was captured and sent to Richmond’s notorious Libby Prison. Three years later, he staggered home broken and unable to hold a job or support his family. Two of his sons, Jeremy and Chesley, died fighting the Rebels and are still buried in Southern soil. Edward McManus from Elizabethtown survived the horrors of starvation in two southern prisons before escaping from a cattle car carrying him and thousands of other Northern soldiers to

This, according to Mr. Tubbs was after three o’clock and Coroner Burt, of Lake George, was promptly summoned and undertaker Joseph A. Woodward took charge of the remains, which was hurried, because of the rancid decomposition, and by five o’clock Mrs. Gleason was interred in the village cemetery in the family plot. Her bearers were Ira Cole, James Stewart, Frank G. Stone and Mac R. Smith, gentlemen all well known to Warrensburgh history readers, many of whom are related to present day citizens.

MRS. GLEASON’S LIFE

A memorial service was held for Mrs. Gleason, 64 years of age, in the Methodist Episcopal Church on Sunday afternoon, at 2 o’clock with the Rev. J.C. Booth officiating.

She was survived by her husband, George Gleason, a son, Harold Gleason, of Warrensburgh and another son, Arthur J. Gleason of Prescott, Arizona. A sister, Mrs. David M. Woodward and another sister, Mrs.Victoria Moon, of Albany.

Out of interest I tried to find out a little more about the George Gleason family and what eventually happened to them all, but I had little luck. I could not discover Mrs. Gleason’s first name but her maiden name was probably Edwards, as her sister, Rebecca Edwards was married to David Woodward.

David and Rebecca’s daughter was Ella Haskell who was the mother of the late David Haskell.

David’s beautiful home is today the Stony Creek museum.

Mrs. Gleason was last seen alive, Sunday evening, May 17, 1908. Her cape was found on the Osborne bridge that same night and the general belief was that she endeavored to drown herself in the river but no one really knew, this theory was not substantiated. It seems that no one really cared enough to search for her until many weeks after her strange disappearance.

Poor Mrs. Gleason! She must have been an unhappy lady but no one will undoubtedly ever know her true tragic story and just what it was in her personal life that motivated her to do the unthinkable. The awful question is, as she was found wedged in the logs and not in the water, did she with mercy die right away or did she slowly perish from the impact? The true story is locked up in her lonely grave in the Warrensburg Cemetery, behind the seldom penetrated, black curtain of time.

I think it was Sir Walter Raleigh who once said, “So which is time, that takes in trust, our youth, our joy, our all we have and leaves us yet with earth and dust.”

New Yorkers fought to save America and were wounded and died at the hands of Southern Rebels who supported slavery and fought under the Confederate flag. Today’s Rebels don’t seem to know they lost the war 150 years ago. They should go South where KKK and Confederate loyalists support their defeated cause.

The Stars and Bars might be welcome in Dixie, but in the North Country, our ancestors fought and died for the Union. These brave men wouldn’t tolerate the flying of Rebel symbols or enemy flags in their home towns.

Third annual event set for Oct. 1

QUEENSBURY | The third annual Adirondack 102 Club Gathering will hold a luncheon Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Highland Park Country Club on Haviland Road in Queensbury.

Following the event, people can share stories and photos of their adventures in the Adirondacks.

The event celebrating the club’s third anniversary is open to the public.

After the book “The Adirondack 102 Club: Your Passport and Guide to the North Country” was released in August 2014, thousands of people have began their quest of trying to visit all 102 towns and villages in the Adirondacks.

So far, 21 people have reached their goal.

The luncheon, sponsored by the Warren County Historical Society, costs $27 per person.

Electronic sign approved for village firehouse

LAKE GEORGE | People driving down Ottawa Street in several weeks will likely be viewing colorful, bright slogans displayed on a message board.

The Lake George Village Board voted Aug. 21 to purchase an electronic LED sign to replace the present conventional messageboard in front of the village fire station.

The village board approved buying the sign from SureFire Sign of Kansas City at a price of $12,610, the lowest of three bids.

The Lake George Volunteer Fire Company is contributing $6,000 towards the cost and the village is paying the remainder.

Concerns were raised by several trustees that the sign is able to display animated, fullcolor messages and images, and both functions are restricted by the local sign code.

Representing the fire company, Doni Smith said fire officers would use discretion in their utilization of the sign’s capabilities and it would be used primarily to promote public events.

“We won’t go crazy with it,” she said.

Lake George Mayor Robert Blais said that some other local businesses have been pushing the limits of the sign code with their animated, multi-color messages, but the village has yet to receive complaints regarding the signs.

Lake George Village Public Works Superintendent Dave Harrington said the sign has the capability of being dimmed at night, to minimize annoyance to neighboring homeowners.

FOREIGN WORKER WOES

Blais announced good news concerning the influence of the Student Connection in its efforts to aid foreign summer workers.

He said that one foreign worker had been hit by a car and broke his leg.

Resident Colleen Boucher recently saw him walking on crutches several miles down the street to his work, he said.

Boucher contacted the village, which purchased the man a season bus pass so he could get to work via trolley.

Several complaints relayed by foreign workers to Student Connection about not getting paid by employers were referred to the state Labor Department, which spurred a investigation by two state officials.

The employers in question are turning over

three years worth of employment records, Blais said, noting that if any pay violation is confirmed, the workers will be refunded any amount due, even after they return to their homelands.

• heard from Harrington that the electric vehicle charging stations were getting far more use than village officials had expected.

To date, charging has been free — but soon motorists will be paying $2 per hour for recharging their vehicles’ batteries.

• voted to turn over financial management of both the King George Fishing Derby and the SAVE the Lake Festival to the FUND for Lake George — the recipient of the two events’ proceeds. Blais said the change would relieve village office personnel of time-consuming tasks.

• were informed by Harrington that the water main on Phillips St. between Prospect and Cortland streets will be replaced next summer, and valves for the upgrade are likely to be installed by November.

• discussed offers from local enterprises to donate toward features at the new dog park in exchange for dedication plaques or advertising signs. People have talked about sponsoring a lean-to, benches, and other features. The board decided to draft a policy for such sponsorships. The board also voted to set a public hearing on proposed amendments to the dog park regulations to satisfy insurance underwriters. Such amendments include officially declaring park hours, requiring proof of vaccinations when requested, and banning dogs in heat from using the venue. The public hearing was set for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 18.

ADK Balloon Fest returns for 45th year Balloons to see liftoff this weekend

QUEENSBURY | Embraced by thousands of people nationally, the renowned Adirondack Balloon Festival returns this weekend in its 45th colorful edition.

This year’s event, set for Thursday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Sept. 24, includes a halfdozen fancifully shaped craft among the 100-plus hot-air balloons from across the continent scheduled to participate.

At no other balloon festival can spectators see dozens of colorful, giant balloons take flight — and get close enough to help a pilot and crew launch their craft.

With all activities free of charge, the festival begins at 4:15 p.m. Thursday in Crandall Park in Glens Falls with a performance by the musical group Master Cylinders, followed by an opening ceremony at 5 p.m., and then a liftoff of 20 or more balloons thereafter.

The specially shaped hot-air balloons include a representation of the U.S. flag, and the fanciful creations “Owlbert Eyenstein,” and “Scorch the Dragon.”

Festival attendees are urged to get to the

airport early on Saturday and Sunday to avoid troublesome traffic.

Dogs, drones and remote-controlled aircraft are barred from the grounds.

The festival concludes with Sunday’s 5 p.m. launch of about two dozen balloons in Glens Falls’ Crandall Park. For three hours beforehand, the Beatles tribute group “Across the Pond” will be providing musical entertainment. ■

EVENT SCHEDULE

On Thursday from 6 to 9:30 p.m., Glens Falls will host a downtown block party, which includes a car show with dozens of classic vehicles, a “walk-about” balloon and various family activities.

On Friday, the festival moves to the Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Queensbury, where gates open at 3 p.m. for such attractions as a craft fair, vendors, children’s activities and music performed by a live band from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. A launch of 80 or more balloons is to be held at 5 p.m.

On Saturday and Sunday at the airport, activities and breakfast begin at 5 a.m.

As many as 100 balloons lift off beginning at about 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. both days.

Vendors open up early and continue all day.

The action features concessions to benefit local charities, military aircraft on display, kites, a rock climbing wall and bounce houses. Saturday, two bands will be performing from

2:20 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by a “Moonglow” event at 8 p.m. with about 30 balloons illuminating simultaneously. All flights are weather permitting.

Board member Mike Packer said he had visited the property and had smelled sewage, but Robinson said it was likely from a property uphill of the Leonards’ property. Packer ultimately made the motion to approve the variance application for a sewage holding tank.

Friends of the Library to host moose talk

CHESTERTOWN | The Friends of the Library in Chestertown are presenting the first of six monthly lectures running September through February, kicking off with the “Moose in the Adirondacks” on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.

According to Linda Taverni, chairman of the Friends of the Chestertown Library, Samuel Peterson, who is a graduate student at SUNY-College of Environmental Science

and Forestry, is doing a study on moose in the Adirondacks and will be resenting some of his findings.

Taverni said this is not the first nature or wildlife lecture held as part of the series.

“We had a wildlife talk a couple years ago on coyotes given by a guy from the DEC, and we have had some programs for kids during summer or raptors,” she said.

However, Taverni said the regular lecture series just started last year with Chestertown women who authored a book on the underground railroad. Other past lectures have included an Adirondack Architectural

Heritage lecture on Cuba.

“We tentatively have plans to have them come back,” she said.

In October, the Friends of the Chestertown Library will have photographer Michael Adler speaking about his trip to Iceland.

Taverni said the Friends of the Library support the library, including having two annual book sales, one in February and one in July. They use funds from the book sales to support the library and programs, such as the book club and children’s programs, including a children’s summer reading program.

“We purchase books, computers and media for the library as a way to supplement the town budget,” Taverni said.

Taverni aid the Friends of the Library help with book room, take book donations, organize the books and hold the book sales, including selling them at the Chestertown Farmers Market. Taverni said some people buy books and donate them back.

Taverni said the Friends of the Library meet on the second Friday of Month at the Library, and they are always looking for more volunteers. ■

USO-style show raises $1,000 for American Legion building fund Community variety show raised funds to rehabilitation effort

CHESTERTOWN | A USO-style Variety Show held Sept. 16 in the auditorium at Chester Town Hall raised over $1,000 for the rehabilitation of the American Legion Post 964 building.

Joanne Ellsworth, American Legion post commander, said the money was raised primarily through the sale of raffle tickets for gift baskets donated by local merchants.

The USO-style Variety Show was hosted by master of ceremonies Wendy Waldron, who also sang, “Through the Years,” as part of the introduction of three-war veteran Jerry Meader. The musical director for the event was elementary school music teacher Maria Schwartz.

“For the last three years, Maria has helped find acts, coordinate acts and help in any way she can. She also plays piano if needed,” Ellsworth said.

This year’s lineup began with s group of preschool kids performing along with a patriotic song. The group included: Baron Schwartz, Claire Bohmer, Isabella Swan, Makayla Rounds, Alyah Gleason, Attalie Gleason and Ruby Waldron.

Next was veteran Ken Little singing, “The Marvelous Toy,” accompanied by his daughter, Wendy Waldron, and granddaughter, Ruby Waldron.

Little was followed by Kirsten Librett singing, “Summertime,” then Coleman Schwartz and Isabella Schwartz performing piano solos.

Next in line was Christopher South from the Sun Community News, who performed three vocal numbers accompanying himself on ukulele.

Gavin and Steve Smith then performed an original song titled, “Driven Crazy.”

Three ladies, Joe Slattery, Jamie Ellsworth and Paulette Contois performed a lip-sync and dance number to the Andrews Sisters’ hit, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” Magician Jonathan Philips performed a card trick involving the audience, and Ken and Jason Little performed the Irish classic, “Grace.” Jason Little closed out the performance with a solo Irish number.

Waldron began singing through the years before calling up Jerry and Elna Meader to be recognized for his many years of service to his country. Meader retired from the Army with the rank of lieutenant colonel after having served with the Nacy in World War II and with the U.S. Army in Korea and Vietnam. ■

Charter penalized for slow broadband buildout

Cable heavyweight will forego $13 million in reimbursements for failing to meet benchmarks

ALBANY | Charter Communications will forgo $13 million in state reimbursements after failing to build out their cable network as required as part of last year’s merger with Time Warner Cable.

The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) announced the settlement last week.

“In its approval of the merger, the Commission required Charter to undertake several

types of investments and other activities,” said PSC Chair John B. Rhodes in a statement. “While Charter is delivering on many of them, it failed to expand the reach of its network to unserved and underserved customers at the pace it committed. We are taking these additional steps to ensure full and complete compliance.”

As part of the merger agreement that created the nation’s largest telecommunications firm, Charter was required to bring high-speed internet to 145,000 unserved households throughout the state.

While Charter has reported that it has completed the first speed upgrade ahead of schedule, the provider had only extended its network to pass 15,164 of the 36,250 premises it was required to pass in the first year.

The Connecticut-based provider has agreed to forgo future reimbursements if it fails to hit six-month benchmarks through May 2020.

WARRENSBURG | The colossal community sale that’s secured national fame for Warrensburg is be held next weekend, and crowds are expected to be as big as ever.

Tens of thousands of people converge on Warrensburg annually for the World’s Largest Garage Sale, a two-day bargain-hunting frenzy, prompting a write-up in the Guinness Book of Records.

The World’s Largest Sale is officially scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 1, although informal nonsanctioned sales start two days before.

For decades, people hailing from across the country have come to Warrensburg to browse through a myriad of wares, including collectibles, crafts, clothing, specialty or distressed goods, vehicle parts, antiques, old toys, vintage jewelry, household items, tools — virtually anything imaginable.

The sale features at least 1,000 yard sales and vendors in Warrensburg. Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce workers have been busy recently renting out spaces to vendors.

The event begins this year at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, and runs until 6 p.m., with the same hours for Sunday, Oct. 2.

On the same weekend, homeowners and entrepreneurs all over northern Warren County also hold sales. Chestertown is holding their community sale on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The event in Warrensburg is not just about bargains: there’s also a street-fair atmosphere, with plenty of carnival food, from “blooming” onions to sausage-and-pepper sandwiches and fried bread.

Shuttle buses circle through the hamlet at 20-minute intervals, letting shoppers on and off not only at designated stops, but where passengers request.

Parking for cars, trucks and recreational vehicles will be available across the street from the Warren County Fairgrounds on Schroon River Road. ■

centage of the target missed and whether or not Charter can demonstrate it has timely performed specific tasks.

The $13 million settlement is the largest cable company financial settlement of its kind in state history and possibly the largest in the nation’s, according to the PSC. The settlement comes as the state enters the homestretch for the New NY Broadband Program, the initiative to fully wire the state with high-speed broadband by the end of 2018.

The state Broadband Program Office has awarded $266 million to date — including $40 million to the North Country — as part of the effort.

Investments could top $1 billion when paired with funds from the private sector.

The third and final deadline for state grants was Aug. 31 and will be augmented by $170 million in federal funds allocated by the Federal Communications Commission.

Since Verizon has declined to participate

in the program, Charter will overbuild on their service area to cover the remaining areas.

But divining which locations in northern New York that may benefit from the expansions — including those in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties — can be tricky because the provider does not make their service maps public, citing their proprietary nature.

“We are currently engaged in an extensive and thoughtful review of areas across upstate NY that lack access to our state-ofthe-art broadband, TV and voice services,” Andrew Russell, a Charter spokesman, told The Sun in April. “As part of this process, we are pleased to work with interested parties to review potential deployment opportunities and will continue to do so.”

However, as part of the settlement agreement, Charter was required to develop a website to inform homeowners and businesses whether their address is included in their broadband expansion plan.

Indian Lake awarded smart growth grant Funds earmarked for hamlet gateway multi-use facilities

INDIAN LAKE | Indian Lake has been awarded a $73,500 state smart growth grant.

Their focus is to support cultural amenities, recreation and economic growth consistent with environmental protection in the Adirondacks and the Catskills.

The grant funding, made possible through the state’s Environmental Protection Fund, will go towards covering projects in Indian Lake that include improving access to Essex Chain Lakes’ recreation opportunities, including developing a gateway informational kiosk

at the Route 28 and Chain Lakes Road intersection.

The project would be inline with suggestions contained in the town’s recently adopted comprehensive plan that direct the town to consider installing additional signage to promote the available recreational access.

Other potential projects include the creation of camping facilities and the development of a formal boat launch with access from Chain Lakes Road.

Because the majority of Lake Abanakee’s shoreline along the road is townowned, part of the funding could be directed toward fostering an environmentally friendly, tourism-related roadside or waterfront walkway with interpretive signage, and other water-based activities appropriate to the lake such as stand-up paddle boarding, paddle boats, canoeing and kayaking.

The plan envisions that such a water-

front corridor would serve as a gateway to and from the greater Essex Chain complex.

The Town of Indian Lake has already begun to establish a Comprehensive Plan Implementation Committee and it will fall within their purview to prioritize the projects within the framework of the funding.

In all, $1.35 million in grants were awarded to some 24 organizations and communities throughout the Mid-Hudson Valley and the North Country. ■

Earlier in the week, Bacon and June McCarthy each scored three goals in a 5-2 win over Minerva/ Newcomb, where Katie O’Donnell scored both goals for the Lady Mountaineers.

O’Donnell also scored one goal in a 4-1 loss by the Mountaineers to Keene, where Grace Armstrong made 12 saves. Armstrong added 16 saves in a 3-0 loss to Crown Point.

In other girls soccer, Lillian Dechene and Maria Black scored for the Lady Orange in a 7-2 loss against Willsboro.

LAKE GEORGE | Following up a pivotal victory a week earlier, the Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne Football team was defeated 32-6 on Sept. 15 by the Holy Trinity football team, a merged squad staffed by athletes attending the school of Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons of Schenectady and Catholic Central of Troy.

Holy Trinity’s victory in the Class C North matchup wasn’t a matter of divine intervention, it was due to the skilled squad scoring on three turnovers — two fumbles and one interception.

After Lake George drove the ball to Holy Trinity’s six yard line in the second quarter, The Pride’s Nelon Priest snagged an interception and ran the length of the field for a touchdown.

Not much later, the Warriors drove to The Pride’s 35-yard-line, a fumble occurred, and one of the Holy Trinity players recovered the ball. The next play, the team’s quarterback threw a pass — tipped by a Warrior defender — but caught by an opponent who ran untouched for a 70-yard touchdown.

“We ground it out for 10 or 12 plays per drive, but we just didn’t get into the end zone except once — It just wasn’t our night,” Warrior Coach Jeff Bennett said, noting his team gained 385 yards running overall. “Holy Trinity got their ball to their playmakers

— and they scored.”

Warrior back Michael Johnson did score a second-quarter touchdown, however, with a five-yard run.

Over the game, Johnson gained 140 yards on 15 carries. His efforts were assisted by no less than four other running backs: teammate Austyn O’Neil added to the rushing tally with 85 yards on 16 runs; Clay Moody gained 69 yards over 13 runs, Tanner DeMarsh tallied 57 yards on 6 carries, and Colin McCabe ran 8 times accumulating 38 yards.

Bennett said his players are not dwelling on the loss, but they’re looking forward to this Friday’s game against Mechanicville, which defeated Holy Trinity 38-34 the prior week.

“Mechanicville is very physical, but we defend the run better than the pass,” Bennett said.

As the Warriors’ drives took them near the end zone several times but they weren’t able to score, the team will be working this week on improving their red-zone offense, the coach said.

Bennett will also be coaching his athletes to protect the ball better to avoid the turnovers that plagued them in the game against Holy Trinity.

“We want to get the ball out of our quarterback’s hands sooner — throwing earlier,” he said. “We’ll be practicing this all week long.” ■

Caleb Buck made 10 saves in a 6-0 loss for Johnsburg against Keene, while Kaleb Davie scored the lone goal for Minerva/Newcomb in a 2-1 loss to Schroon Lake and Koki Goda had one goal and Bryce Hutchins 10 saves for Indian Lake/Long Lake in a 13-1 loss to Crown Point.

Goda added two more goals for the Orange in a 6-2 defeat against Wells, while Logan McKinney scored the lone goal as Johnsburg scored a 1-0 win over Schroon Lake. Meader’s name appears three times because he is a veteran of three wars: World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Jerome “Jerry” Meader, 89, was born April 28, 1928 in Schenectady, the first of five children.

He was scheduled to graduate high school in 1946, but the war called him away early.

Meader said the idea of being an infantryman did not appeal to him, so in 1945 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent to fire control school in San Diego.

He was then assigned as a gunner on a tanker refueling ships in the Pacific.

“If you want a hairy experience, fuel an aircraft carrier at sea. The sea is never calm,” Meader said.

Meader said in his nearly 25 years in the military, refueling at sea was probably the scariest thing he had ever done.

According to a bio compiled by his wife Elna, Meader attended the University of Oklahoma, where he was a track star.

She said at one time he had the second fastest time in the nation in the quarter-mile, and along with his brother Jack, was in line to compete in the 1952 Olympics.

Injuries kept them both out of the Olympics, but not out of the Korean War. In May 1951, Meader was commissioned as a field artillery second lieutenant through the U.S. Army’s ROTC program.

His first assignment was as a Training, Advising and Counseling (TAC) officer for the ROTC at Fort Sill, Okla.

He spent six months at Fort Sill before being sent to Fort Benning, Ga., for paratrooper training.

Later, he would attend flight school in San Marino, Texas.

After flight school, Meader was sent to Korea, where he flew a small, fixed wing observation plane, and acted as a liaison between American units.

After he returned from Korea, the Army sent him to school to learn to fly rotary-wing aircraft (helicopters), which were a primary means of transport for U.S. forces in Vietnam.

Meader went to flight instructor school, and was assigned in Europe in 1962.

Meader and Elna knew each other in high school, and later in college.

“I was also a lifeguard, and he was my boss,” Elna said.

One day while she had her hair in curlers, he picked her up and waded out into the lake, getting ready to throw her in.

“He said to me, ‘Aren’t you going to scream?’” Elna said.

“I said, ‘No.’” She said Meader looked surprised and said, “You’re different,” and carried her back to the beach without throwing her in the water.

They married in 1952, and in July 1966 they bought a home at Brant Lake.

The day after they closed on the house, Meader got orders for Vietnam, where he flew UH-1 “Huey” helicopters in A

Co., 501st Aviation Battalion.

At 38, Meader was in his third military conflict, and significantly older than the other pilots he served with.

“They were high school kids,” Meader said, only slightly exaggerating.

The average age of American soldiers in Vietnam was 19.

Elna said when they have attended reunions of the aviators with the 501st, the younger pilots said of her husband, “He was like a father to us” and “We love him like our own fathers.”

The Meaders had two children, Linda and Buck. Meader, who was an Eagle Scout, serves on the Boy Scouts Review Board.

He has served on the Horicon Zoning Board and donated his time with the Brant Lake Association, Meals on Wheels, and with the Office of the Aging.
