Burglaries at Thurman town hall under investigation Grist Mill restaurant also hit By Thom Randall

ATHOL — In the wake of two recent burglaries at the Thurman Town Hall, the rural town’s leaders are considering security upgrades, Thurman supervisor Evelyn Wood said this week. The first intrusion occurred Sept. 1 after town employees left for the day, with someone apparently prying open the hall’s back door, then forcing entry into the town clerk’s office, Wood reported. The burglar jimmied open a locked fire-
proof cabinet and stole some amount of cash less than $350, she said. All three doors were locked, Wood said, adding that there were marks on the three doors indicating each of them had been pried open. The burglary was discovered the next morning soon after town Clerk Jeanie Sprague opened up her office. The second burglary occurred Sept. 6, with new similar indications the back door and the town clerk’s office door had again been opened — but the burglar was unsuccessful this second time in opening the cabinet in the clerk’s office. Wood said she believed nothing was taken in the latter incident.
One of the security cameras installed in the town hall recorded an image Sept. 1 of someone moving toward the town clerk’s office, Wood said, noting it wasn’t very distinct because of the lack of lighting. “It appeared to be a person in their mid20s, someone we didn’t recognize,” she said, noting that the camera also recorded a figure moving through the town hall in the Sept. 6 burglary. “These burglaries have proven the value of the security cameras.” Warren County Sheriff ’s deputies responded to both incidents, and Wood has discussed with law enforcement officials what measures can be taken to enhance security at the town hall.
“They gave us some really valuable information about what we can do to prevent future problems,” she said, noting that improvements might include motion-activated lighting or alarms, and perhaps more tamperresistant entrances. Although the video cameras have recorded the intrusion and may provide useful evidence, the purchase and installation of the security cameras prompted objections last year from some local taxpayers, despite their minimal cost. The investigation into the burglaries is continuing, and as of Monday, no suspect had yet been apprehended, Wood said. >> See ROBBERY | pg. 13
Record-breaking weekend
Lake George’s 2016 Car show breaks records By Thom Randall

LAKE GEORGE — The ever-popular Adirondack Nationals Car Show last weekend was as spectacular as ever in its 28th year, event organizer Ken Williams said days after the event overwhelmed Lake George Village. For three decades, the Adirondack Nationals has presented ingeniously crafted hot rods, lovingly restored antique and classic sedans, muscle cars and vintage sports cars — many of them quite rare. “The creativity in the design and construction of the vehicles was amazing,” Williams said. “Every automobile that rolled through the entrance gates was like a piece of jewelry — the paint, the bodywork, the chrome, the construction and detailing was all so incredible.” Williams said he was particularly impressed with a black vintage “Diamond T” tow truck re-purposed by an automotive designer into a street rod. Williams said the 2016 car show hosted a record number of vehicles — plus it exceeded expectations in attendance and scope. “It was a great year — we had at least 100 more vehicles than last year — and everything went very well.” The show’s guest celebrity, famed custom auto builder Steve Darnell of television’s Vegas >> See CAR SHOW | pg. 13
