The state Attorney General’s Office in-

formed the federal Surface Transportation Board (STB) they would apply for a determination on the Tahawus Line by Aug. 31, citing the “absence of current use” on the track, as well as the “lack of any foreseeable future need” for rail service on the 30-mile line.

The adverse abandonment application asks the federal board to remove Iowa Pacific as the owner and operator of the line.

But the state’s plan was countered abruptly on Monday as the Essex County Board of Supervisors opposed the move.

WARREN COUNTY | Warren County Treasurer Mike Swan has asked the Board of Supervisors to amend its local law to include “short-term vacation rentals,” including Airbnb rentals, among tourist accommodations and to collect occupancy tax.

The Board of Supervisors scheduled a public hearing on the matter for Friday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. in the supervisors meeting room.

The unanimous decision comes in step with the Town of Newcomb; Mitchell Stone, new owners of the Tahawus mine, and the company looking to buy and restore the line, Omnitrax, part of the Denver, Colorado-based Broe Group.

Tupper Lake businessman Paul Mitchell, of Mitchell Stone, purchased the Tahawus mine property in February, said Newcomb Supervisor Robin DeLoria.

For 10 years, Mitchell has been under contract with National Lead to remove mine tailings. The local company is looking to expand the operation.

“If no one objects to it (abandonment),” DeLoria said, “the STB would ultimately rubber-stamp it and these tracks would be ripped out.”

DeLoria said Mitchell expects it would take 75 years to move the mining resources out of Tahawus by truck.

By using the railroad, DeLoria told the board, it could be done in 50 years.

While Saratoga & North Creek Railway President Ed Ellis contended previous plans to transport tailings failed to materialize, Mitchell said the landscape has changed.

The Chicago-based company convinced federal authorities in 2012 to reopen the line earlier this decade to transport mine tailings from the shuttered mine in Newcomb.

“There may be an opportunity here,” Mitchell told The Sun on Monday.

in giving Ellis a competitive rate, Mitchell said.

CP, he said, may be more receptive now that transport of crude oil has tapered off.

“Things have changed,” he said. “Whether it will work, I’m not sure — time will tell.”

Minerva Supervisor Stephen McNally said abandonment makes no sense with business transactions in process.

“I think if you have an interested railroad that wants to buy the property, I fully support this resolution (objecting to abandonment),” McNally said.

IN WARREN COUNTY

Omnitrax had informed Warren County mid-August of their intent to purchase the railroad line, expecting to close on the acquisition this fall.

But Glens Falls Ward 3 Supervisor Claudia Braymer said the decision-making process regarding the railroad’s future was out of sequence: Warren County officials should determine the “highest and best use” of the railroad bed, she said, before holding discussions with potential railroad operators.

Three motions — one to sell the railroad, another to secure a freight operator, and the third to issue a Request for Proposals to study various options for the railroad — all failed to garner a second at a committee meeting earlier this month, and no action has yet been taken by the Warren County Board of Supervisors.

The state has not recorded the pending railroad sale or Mitchell’s purchase at Tahawus among their documents.

The Notice of Intent filed on behalf of the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) cited the prospects of “beneficial non-rail use” of the property, and con-

tended there are “significant environmental health and safety concerns” associated with the current use of the property.

GREEN GROUPS WEIGH IN

Environmental groups are also split on potential future uses for the railway.

Protect the Adirondacks has called for Warren County to work with the state to investigate conversion of the tracks to a multi-purpose public recreation trail.

“It would be foolish for Warren County to rush into a another contract for the Saratoga & North Creek Railway without looking at a long-term solution for the rail line,” said Peter Bauer, the group’s executive director, in a statement.

“This is a major decision and a lot of information should gathered and a feasibility study organized.”

The Adirondack Council is calling for a more measured approach.

“We urge the state to take this process one step at a time,” said William Janeway, executive director. “It makes sense for DEC to talk with the surrounding communities and solicit ideas from the public before making a final decision about future uses of the rail corridor.”

The Town of Newcomb is expected to adopt its formal resolution Tuesday night and file formal objection with the STB, citing an impediment to business.

Following public outcry over the storage of empty rail cars in the Adirondack Park Forest Preserve, Iowa Pacific removed most of its equipment and rail cars from the line this spring.

They’ve since asked Warren County to buy them out for $5 million. ■

New parking laws pending in Lake George Village

LAKE GEORGE | Parking vehicles in the village is the focus of two of three new ordinances either enacted or discussed last month by the Lake George Village Board.

Under consideration is a law allowing residents to park cars, after obtaining a permit, on their property in certain zones during the Americade motorcycle rally, the village’s Fourth of July celebration and three days of the Adirondack Nationals Car Show as well as during scheduled village fireworks shows.

Adirondack Nationals is set to occur this year from Sept. 6-9.

The pending ordinance, initially intended for only the three major village events, was amended by the board on July 16 to include residential parking during the sanctioned fireworks shows held weekly on Thursday nights.

The amendment prompted scheduling a secondary public hearing on the ordinance for July 23. The pending law prohibits active solicitation or “hawking” of such residential parking.

Another ordinance, enacted by the board

at their monthly meeting, prohibits parking automobiles, recreational vehicles, boat trailers and other mobile equipment overnight on village streets without a $25 permit.

The new law also bans parking vehicles on front lawns or street-side yards of corner residential properties unless permitted during the above specified events.

This ordinance was primarily prompted by complaints heard by residents that boat trailers were being dropped off in front of homes on side streets in the village and left for days — or weeks.

A third ordinance passed by the board provides property owners to bypass, for certain proposed construction projects, site plan review for architectural standards.

Instead, their plans would go directly to the Zoning Board of Appeals for scrutiny, eliminating not only a fee but cutting the length of the review process by at least a month.

A project’s eligibility for such a streamlined review process would be determined in advance by the village code enforcement officer.

The ordinances are posted in the lobby of the village hall and will soon be published on the village website. ■

Adk Nationals Car Show parking fees hiked In other business, the village board endorsed a new rate for special parking permits during the Adirondack Nationals Car Show.

The rate for a permit allowing parking in a single space Monday through Saturday during the show is to be raised from last year’s price of $50 to a fee of $75, and for the Friday and Saturday of the show, $50. A single-day parking permit for Saturday is to be sold for $30.

Village Mayor Bob Blais noted that during Adirondack Nationals, a large number of people bring automobiles that they want to sell and park them all week long on Canada Street. He said many of the vehicle owners sit beside their vehicles all day long, watch for meter enforcement officers and only

put money in the meter when they see them approaching — resulting in an annual revenue loss of $8,000 to $9,000.

Within the first two days of the car show each year, most all the available spaces are occupied, he said.

The pending increase in special parking permit fees, along with increased enforcement, Blais said, would counteract this loss by people who skirt the parking laws during Adirondack Nationals.

Blais had initially proposed that the six-day parking permit fee be raised to $100, but the pending rate was lowered to $75 after board members Ray Perry and Joe Mastrodomenico said such an increase was a substantial jump and should be increased incrementally over the next few years. ■

ELIZABETHTOWN | Sun Community News and Printing has made significant changes to the configuration of its press room. The changes have been made to allow for future expansion of its printing capabilities.

The press room, located at the Sun Community News and Printing offices in Elizabethtown, contains a 17-unit Goss community press for both color and black and white printing. The press is currently able to accommodate up to 24 pages of color on each section. Additionally, the press room contains two automated folding machines that cut, score and fold each newspaper as it is printed.

The changes to the press room involved moving a number of these units which are 8 feet high, 5 feet wide and weighing approximately 7,500 pounds.

Sun Community News and Printing hired a firm that specializes in moving heavy and sensitive machinery to manage the process.

According to Production Manager Bill Coats, the press units are assembled in a straight line with some stacked on top of others.

Complicating matters, printing presses are typically bolted to the floor and then cemented in place to ensure that there is no movement as the press is running because any movement can lead to printing that is blurry or otherwise unclear. This makes them incredibly stable, but difficult to move.

“Five units needed to be disassembled from the line, lifted out of position and moved to their new places in the line. It was actually quite a production,” Coats said. “We used heavy equipment and moved the units very, very slowly and very, very carefully.”

According to Coats, the crew needed to ★jackhammer ★ ★ ★ the floor surrounding the press

units and cut the bolts so that the units could be moved with a forklift “Then the 7,500 pound units needed to be carefully and perfectly repositioned, stacked, bolted and cemented into place,” he said.

The change was completed to pave the way for other upgrades to the press, said Publisher Dan Alexander.

“We have made some significant changes to the way our press units are configured,” Alexander said. “We purchased two newer units and we are planning to move one of our folding units so that we will be able to produce multiple jobs at a time.”

The company has also upgraded the system that delivers ink to the papers. This new system allows press operators to enter codes on the printing press so that the perfect amount of ink is distributed.

“After we moved the units, we also made changes to enhance color consistency, improve efficiency and reduce waste,” Alexander said.

“Sun Community News readers will notice improvements to the overall quality and consistency of the newspapers.”

The press room reconfiguration and color capability upgrade are the initial steps in a comprehensive printing press upgrade. Later this summer, Sun Community News and Printing will install a computer system that automates the function of creating page templates before printing takes place.

“The final component of the press upgrade is to automate the functions that take place between the design phase and the printing phase of the newspapers,” said Alexander. “Those functions include color correction, pagination, building the templates and developing the printing plates that are used by the printing press.”

Each of the changes have been implemented to ensure better print quality while reducing waste, saving time and making it an easier process for press operators. “We are really excited about the improvements and how these changes will improve our capabilities into the future,” said Alexander. “It’s an exciting time.” ■

LAKE GEORGE | Restored antique sedans, custom-built hot rods, classic muscle cars and other specialty automobiles will attract tens of thousands of spectators to Lake George Sept. 6 through Sept. 9 as the 2018 Adirondack Nationals Car Show is held in the village.

The automobile expo, one of the three most popular events held annually in Lake George, is considered one of the premier automotive expositions held in upstate New York.

The event has about 1,500 cars registered for the event, with an equal number of vehicles — not registered for the show — likely to be on display elsewhere in the village.

auto club Albany Rods and Kustoms, said that part of the draw of the show is the variety of automobiles on display — from custom-crafted vehicles with $200,000 invested, to homemade “rat rods” welded together from salvaged parts in a residential garage.

“You don’t have to have a $100,000 car to win, it could be a rat-rod or one that’s not the best looking, perhaps just painted in primer,” he said.

This year’s celebrity guests are master metal fabricator Joe Martin and his wife Amanda of southern Texas, who locate aging classic vehicles in the southwest U.S. and restore them, as depicted on the television show “Iron Resurrection.” In 2014, Joe Martin won Discovery Channel’s “Biker Build-Off” competition.

The Martins will be signing autographs and posing for photos with show attendees — although at some times there may be a lengthy wait to meet them, according to Ken Williams, show co-chairman.

The couple will be on hand at various times over the four days beginning at the car show kickoff party Thursday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., he said.

The most popular aspect of the show are two cruise events, beginning at 7 p.m. on both Friday Sept. 7 and Saturday Sept. 8 — registered vehicles parading through the village — for which many thousands of spectators pack the sidewalks of Canada Street to watch.

People attending the cruise events should arrive several hours early to avoid long traffic backups, and parking will be quite limited throughout the village.

In addition to the daily car show and parades, the event features an expo of automotive equipment, accessories and services. The vendors will be situated at the village’s Festival Commons, located off West Brook Road.

Americade’s ‘block party’ may move to Beach Road

LAKE GEORGE | Traffic disruption in Lake George Village stemming from Americade’s two-day block party may be just a bad memory by next year if the motorcycle rally’s director and village officials work out logistics to move the event to a new site.

Canada Street, Lake George’s main drag, was closed on June 8 and June 9 from Amherst Street to Montcalm Street for the rally’s block party, which featured live music and motorcycle stunt rides.

Americade Vice President Christian Dutcher met with the village board July 23 and said he would consider the village board’s suggestion of relocating the block party to a northwest stretch of Beach Road and strategize the details of the move over the next three weeks.

Dutcher is to attend the board’s Aug. 20 meeting when the board is likely to decide where the block party will be situated next June.

Residents of the village’s back streets have expressed impassioned complaints about extreme traffic congestion over the weekend block party, and firefighters said the backup of vehicles in roadways hindered their ability to respond quickly to emergencies.

This summer’s edition of Americade was the first year for the block party, a new attraction of the 35-year-old rally, introduced to stem the slow attendance decline over the last half-dozen years.

“Every year we wrestle to keep Americade fresh, interesting and exciting — and this is our number one priority,” Dutcher said in defense of the block party.

When Village Mayor Robert Blais initially suggested at the July 23 meeting that the block party be relocated to Shepard Park — or somewhere else to avoid closing down a roadway, Dutcher demurred.

“When people drive into town, they know something yery big and exciting is happening,” Dutcher said about the street party that attracted thousands of people this year.

He also said he received substantial positive feedback about the party from motorcyclists, his vendors, and representatives of motorcycle manufacturers who participate in his rally.

Blais said that locating the block party — as well a Tour Expo, the rally’s trade show —

in the village’s core was a beneficial to local businesses as well as motorcyclists.

Blais and village public works superintendant Dave Harrington said that if the street party was relocated to Beach Road, the stage would be set up near the village Visitors Center, and it would face southeast.

Harrington and Dutcher both noted that Beach Road’s median, about eight inches high, would be an obstacle for block party attendees to contend with.

Blais predicted that closure of Beach Road, would be permitted by Warren County authorities. He said that county Public Works

Harrington noted that no motorcycle stunt shows — which left “burnout” marks on Canada Street roadway this year — could not be held on Beach Road due to its innovative and expensive porous pavement.

Dutcher said he had already decided not to host the stunt shows at future block parties.

Blais and village trustees expressed their intent to collaborate with Dutcher in hosting Americade and assuring its continued success, citing how the rally has a substantial impact on the region’s economy. ■

Is a united country in our future?

I’ve received a number of emails from last week’s column and have had several discussions with folks

By Dan Alexander from both sides of the • PUBLISHER • aisle who recognize that what is going on in our political psyche these days isn’t in anyone’s best interest.

Will impeaching the president satisfy the angry crowd, or will it only make matters worse as those who support him take to the streets seeking their own form of retribution?

It’s pretty obvious neither side is doing much to tamp down the anger, so we can only assume things will get far worse before they get better.

So why do we need to go down this road when most people seem to realize no matter how far we go, it’s only leading us down a dead-end street? Sooner or later, we’ll need to return to a more united country.

So what’s the answer? Independent leaders who have no party affiliation?

Clearly, without one of the two main parties behind a candidate, they will never get enough traction to be taken seriously, and sadly neither party has shown a willingness to resolve some of the issues that feed out of control partisanship.

Our forefathers’ anticipated such destructive behavior and established a procedure to address these issues in Article V of the U.S. Constitution.

The convening of a convention of the states, called for by two-thirds of the state legislatures.

The mere discussion of such a convention of state delegates strikes fear into the heart of Washington. In part, because the only other constitutional convention in U.S. history — the one in 1787 that produced the current U. S. Constitution — went far beyond its mandate, Congress and the states have never mustered enough support to call another one.

Such a move would send shockwaves around the globe, but this nation was founded on the belief that the citizens of this free country should hold the power, not the aristocrats who hold serve at the federal level today. They continue to place their interests and those of their parties before their constituents.

The solution to our discourse will never be easily solved, but continuing on the present course offers little remedy for a truly democratic process.

Article V is certainly a better alternative than civil unrest in the streets that we are already seeing on a growing scale today. ■

Republicans obstruct themselves

To the Editor: Editor’s note: The following is in response to George King’s letter, “Dems hijacked by radical left” which appeared in the Aug. 11 edition of The Sun. George, I realize that your letter is a quick reaction to John O’Neill’s letter about the Republican takeover by the extreme right, but the idea that the Democrats have been taken over by the extreme left is actually funny.

There are some who lean more left but hardly merit the title radical. And, if you do not think that the Congress has been cowed by Trump and those who choose to use him for the extreme right agenda, I am not going to argue with you, it’s obvious everywhere except on Fox News.

Obama had a veto-proof majority for exactly three months out of 48. Just three!

He chose to make medical insurance the top priority, which any sensible person would agree was/is of the utmost importance, and succeeded. Which is not to belittle the predicament of Social Security.

The idea that the Democrats are obstructionist as they vote in reaction to retrograde policies put forward in a Congress totally controlled by Republicans is a bit off base.

What the Republicans don’t get done is due to the obstruction within their own party.

On the other hand, Mitch McConnell and many other Republicans declared publicly that they would kill anything that Obama was in favor of. Anything — and they did.

Trump has had free reign with his cabinet appointees and they are not only riddled with graft, but they are mostly contrarian to the objectives of the departments they

have been appointed to lead, as in lowering standards for clean air and trying to stimulate expanded use of coal.

So, yes, we will come out in droves and vote to retake control of the House and maybe the Senate, Trump and those who rubberstamp his destructive policies and behavior will ultimately get their just deserts.

Tupper Lake is a hidden gem of the Tri-Lakes

To the Editor: I cannot keep the secret any longer! There is a hidden gem in the Tri-Lakes area. That gem is Tupper Lake!

I have lived in Tupper Lake for nearly one year and I continue to be amazed at what this seemingly sleepy village offers: abundant picturesque waterways, a rail trail, a restored train depot, exercise and yoga classes, energy healing services, varied and delicious restaurants, chaga tea and a movie theatre (where you even get to vote for what movies you would like to see)!

The residents are friendly and courteous and quiet. I am not a beer drinker, but I hear the local breweries are fabulous.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the Tupper Triad, a three-mountain local challenge that includes terrific 360-views and a fire tower!

There is a Buddhist mantra that says, “The jewel is in the locust” which means wisdom and compassion lie within.

I paraphrase that and say, “Tupper Lake is the gem within the Tri-Lakes.”

I am so glad I live here!

Stefanik not as transparent as she claims

To the Editor: Elise Stefanik’s latest campaign ad warns New York’s 21st Congressional District voters about the comments of her opponent recorded undercover by a teenager who was compensated for his video.

The ad then goes on to tout Elise’s transparency and all the good she has done for our district.

I guess Elise’s definition of transparency is misleading voters for weeks leading up to the vote repealing the Affordable Care Act including right up to the time she was working as a whip lining up the votes.

My wife called Elise’s office every hour that day trying to get an answer on how Elise was voting.

While she was being told Elise was still reading the bill, I was watching CSPAN while the vote was underway and there was Elise serving as one of the speaker’s whips, moving the vote to repeal the ACA, taking healthcare away from 64,000 constituents.

Elise, I may have been born at night but I wasn’t born last night.

Do you really expect us to believe that you had reservations about voting to repeal the ACA? For seven years, all we heard from Republicans was repeal and replace.

There is no way your mentor, Paul Ryan, was going to give you a pass on this vote.

As a cancer survivor, thanks for voting to bring back exclusions for preexisting conditions and lifetime caps on how much an insurance company will pay.

How to spot Champ

To the Editor: We often read of claimed sightings of Champ in Lake Champlain. See “Big Week for Champ” Aug. 25 edition.

But are they real? Where’s the proof?

Actually, it’s really easy to spot Champ. All you need is the right equipment and motivation.

Now I am not talking about exotic or expensive equipment, just stuff we all have sitting in the garage, gathering dust. Here is a list.

Equipment: 1. A beach chair.

2. A cooler.

3. One tube of suntan lotion.

4. 10 pounds of ice.

5. A case of your favorite beer, preferably in cans!

Methodology: 1. Fill the cooler with the ice and the case of beer. (Yes, you need at least 24 cans of beer). Fortunately, the brand of beer is not significant.

2. Go to the beach by 10 a.m.; OK, by 11 a.m. for sure.

3. Apply suntan lotion.

4. Set up the beach chair. Make sure you have an unobstructed view of Lake Champlain.

5. Start drinking the beer.

Somewhere between the 20th and the 22nd can of beer, you will spot Champ.

If you do not spot Champ by the 24th can of beer, it is clear that you have somehow not carefully followed the methodology. I suggest you wait a week and retry the experiment. Perhaps you have not correctly applied the suntan lotion.

Dems need to win House to preserve checks and balances

To the Editor: At periods of political crisis, the genius of the U.S. Constitution shines through.

In the present circumstance, if one believes that checks and balances among the three parts of the federal government are crucial, then electing a Democratic Party majority in the House of Representatives is imperative.

With Republicans controlling both the presidency and Congress (and in effect the Supreme Court, particularly if Judge Kavanaugh is approved), the abuses by President Trump will go unchecked.

To protect Trump, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence closed down its investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 elections before all the evidence was in, blocking Democratic members’ requests to subpoena key witnesses.

Then Chairman Nunes and the Republicans refused to invite the translator at the Trump/Putin private meeting in Helsinki to meet in secret session to tell what Trump agreed to with Putin.

Rep. Elise Stefanik is on that committee

which historically has been a key point of Congressional oversight of the executive branch on matters of National Security. Indeed she is on the subcommittee on cyber security.

However nice Rep. Stefanik may be, if she is re-elected, she will continue to vote with Republicans to control the organization of the House.

The results: continued refusal to provide oversight of President Trump and his administration.

She will continue to side with Trump’s agenda, which includes destroying the Affordable Care Act, limiting growth of Medicare and Medicaid, gutting environmental protections and cutting revenue for essential social services for low and middle income Americans, a step House GOP leaders justify to mitigate the dangerously growing deficits caused by Trump’s tax cut for the top one percent.

To help restore checks and balances in this dangerous period, thoughtful Republicans and Independents need to vote in November for a Democratic Party majority in the House of Representatives.

State, federal reps have North Country interests at heart

To the Editor: I have watched with disgust the letters, editorials and turmoil in the news that oppose our duly elected officials and everything they are trying to accomplish simply out of party anguish.

I would like to say I am proud to be in the districts that are represented by our local elected officials. I have seen and know that Sen. Betty Little, Assemblyman Dan Stec and Rep. Elise Stefanik all have the best interests of the North Country at heart and do not simply vote party lines.

Their voices are heard as representing the best interest of their constituents.

We have to remember though that all legislation are not simply “one issue” documents.

All too often things are added to a positive bill that would not be passed otherwise. Unfortunately, in these cases, we trust our representatives to balance the good, the bad and the ugly and support the best outcome for everyone.

I have seen the track records of these exemplary representatives, and I can say without hesitation, that if they say it, you can “take it to the bank” as an honest and straightforward response and in the best interests of us all.

Smokers have rights, too

To the Editor: Editor’s note: The following is in response to Eugene Ring’s letter, “‘Totally deplorable’ to remove veteran from park for smoking,” which appeared in the Aug. 11 edition of The Sun. I could not agree more with the sentiments expressed by Eugene Ring anent the removal of Army Major Ed Miller (because he was smoking a cigar in the park.

In addition to his stellar service, he’s entitled — ­ as are all cigar smokers — ­ to some sort of fair and human treatment ­— especially in an open area of a park.

Imagine all the things in a given park and all the people therein who offend others for a variety of reasons. Should we have a right to impose our distastes or dislikes for what they are doing or saying and also have them banned?

A cigar smoker is entitled to some rights too.

Life Flight saved my life

To the Editor: I went to the open house of Life Flight and had a great time. I would like people to know my story with them. Next month on the 19th, it will be six years.

I had a brain aneurysm. I owe a lot to their service. If it wasn’t for Life Flight, I wouldn’t be here.

I was in Saranac Lake Hospital and they called for the service to get me to Fletcher Allen. That ride saved my life. It’s very important to get needed medical attention so a big thank you to all those that dedicate their time and skills to what they do!

Shared values

To the Editor: Prescient may not be the right word, but it somehow feels right.

Mr. Alexander’s Aug. 22, editorial bemoaned the loss of “shared values.” He expressed fear that “we’ve lost our way,” that the “enemy is now us.” But, his case in point hardly evidences the crisis that he laments.

So, Andrew Cuomo believes that the nation’s failure to fully address historical inequalities impairs America’s claim to greatness.

Cuomo simply proffers the counterpoint to Mr. Trump’s platitudinous “Make America Great Again” slogan.

And, it is a fair point, if you question what the word “again” references, as some just and civic minded Americans might. And, to paraphrase Mr. Trump, there are some just and civic minded Americans on both sides.

Equality is not just a left wing or liberal ideal, and we are not enemies when we agree.

But, I began by attributing prescience to Mr. Alexander’s editorial; and so it is, coming shortly before the death of that great American hero, Sen. John McCain.

Mr. Alexander’s editorial concludes most pointedly that “when any of us use words or actions that defame or deface those who’ve defended our nation with life and limb…then clearly we’ve lost far more than just our way.”

If, as Mr. Alexander fears, more than just our way is being lost, it is perhaps because the nation follows a leader who defamed the heroic Senator McCain, while he himself is a coward.

Mr. Alexander and The Sun’s readers will have an opportunity to hear and observe America’s truly shared values as Senator McCain is eulogized and his life is honored in repose at the Capital Rotunda and the National Cathedral.

Trump will be absent. I submit that is a start on the right path.

Then what?

To the Editor: OK liberal Democrats. Let’s say you’re successful in deposing our president.

Then what?

Assume a calm, low-impact transition to President Pence?

You hate his Christian value-based ideology almost as much as Trump.

Then what?

President Ryan, President Hatch and down the presidential succession list through the cabinet?

None of these Republicans meet your leftist social justice agenda, so you and the liberal media will have to begin taking them

down one by one until your uncompromising positions are achieved.

Do you believe that any of this could be accomplished without impacting the national good?

Look beyond the ridiculous tweets and stupid comments and you will find an economy, stock market, unemployment and GDP growth the best that it has been in decades; illegal immigration reduced, the military significantly strengthened, law enforcement respected again and the global world order revamped such that we are no longer being taken advantage of by first world nations in trade or by third world dictatorships and theocracies holding us hostage through threats of nuclear proliferation or terrorism.

Most liberal Democrats will not agree with any of this and refuse to give Trump credit no matter what he does.

Let’s revisit the “what then.”

The stock market and the economic growth trend collapses, unemployment increases, North Korea and Iran resume nuclear ambitions while Russia and China make bids for world domination.

Without ICE, illegal immigrants overwhelm cities creating unsustainable tax burdens. The national debt skyrockets again and socialism becomes an acceptable alternative.

For what?

To quote Hillary, “What difference does it make?”

How about putting the nation first?

Then, rather than letting the “what then” scenario play out, criticize as appropriate, but let the man do his job.

If he hasn’t sufficiently benefited the American people by 2020, let the nation decide whether he should be replaced or not.

To the Editor: Once again, I find it necessary to point out the Sun Community News’ rules don’t seem to apply when our President Donald Trump is under attack.

The article “Stefanik ‘all-in’ on Trumpism” written by Frank Pagano, from Jay, contained the following, “who are comfortable with Trump’s incompetence, corruption, racism, corporatism, environmental degradation, nepotism, authoritarianism, etc.”

Yes they are all big words and suggest Frank is well educated, also they appear to be spelled correctly, possible due to spell check but regardless I find it offensive and insulting and hold you the editor responsible for allowing such statements.

The article “Disagrees with ‘cold logic’ letter” written by Richard Barney.

Please get your facts in order, an illegal pregnant woman would not be turned away from an emergency room when in need, and all costs for delivery and care of a child, even if it was in need of long, long term care, you and I, if you pay taxes, will be picking up the tab, and it’s happening everyday across our nation!

Virginia Visconti LAKE PLACID | Virginia (Ginger) Visconti passed away at home with hospice on Aug. 19, 2018. Virginia was born in Lake Placid on June 21, 1942 to the late Ora and Cecelia Barney.

Virginia was a former executive secretary for the General Electric Corporation. She worked beside her husband, James (Jim) Visconti, raising

registered Holstein dairy cows and driving horses at their farm in Jefferson County, New York and Canton.

Ginger was a member and contributor of the Nature Conservancy, National Audubon Society, Earthjustice, Greenpeace, Natural Resources Defense Council, Adirondack Explorer, Florida Wildlife Federation, Vermont Center for Ecostudies, Crane Mountain Valley Horse Rescue, Adirondack Council, Humane Society of the U.S., North Country SPCA, ASPCA, Jefferson County, Florida Humane Society, North Country Public Radio and WFSU Public Radio in Florida.

Together with her husband, Ginger donated land to the Adirondack chapter of the Nature Conservancy for the expansion of Silver Lake Bog Preserve in Black Brook. She provided a conservation easement to the Florida Wildlife Federation for

the federation’s first protected land in Jefferson County, Florida.

Ginger was a loving housewife, gourmet chef, accomplished ice skater, hiker, long distance bike rider, avid gardener and reader, extensive traveler having visited state, national and provincial parks throughout the U.S. and Canada. She was a Christian follower.

In addition to her parents, Ginger is predeceased by her sister, Barbara Olsen.

Ginger is survived by her husband, Jim; her daughter, Valerie (Nicholas) DeGrace; her brothers, Robert and Richard, and Jon; her grandson, Dane (Brittany) DeGrace and her greatgranddaughter, Tessa DeGrace.

Ginger’s family requests that any donations in her honor be made to Hospice of the North Country, Tom Miller Rd., Plattsburgh, New York 12901. ■

WARRENSBURG | Jonathon Parrish, the son of James and Brenda Parrish of Warrensburg, received his PhD from the University of Otago, New Zealand on Aug. 18.

Previously, he earned degrees from Warrensburg Central School and Adirondack Community College; the University of Reading, United Kingdom; University of Aachen, Germany; and the University of Groningen, Netherlands.

In 2012, he was part of the winning team from Groningen University during iGEM World Competition held in Boston, Massachusetts. At the University of Otago, he invented a medical device currently with a patent pending. This year, he has been hired as a researcher for a Swedish business. ■

One hundred years ago – September 1918

SCHOOLGIRL KILLED BY AUTO

Verna Smith, of Riverbank, the thirteen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank P. Smith and the grandchild of Sylvenue Smith, while walking by the roadside on the Lake George–Warrensburgh state highway about 7:30 o’clock Thursday evening, Sept. 5, 1918, a short distance north of the High Point Tavern, was struck by an automobile and injured so seriously that she died within two hours.

The car was owned by J. Charles Grant, of Montreal, and was driven by Henry A. Poulin who was accompanied

by Joseph A. Grant and Max Sourkes, also of Montreal.

The little girl was staying with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Baker, at their home about half a mile south of Warrensburgh in North Caldwell, having come here to attend the Warrensburgh High School. She went out after supper to call on a friend down the road and was returning home when the accident occurred.

When leaving the house, she was cautioned by Mr. Baker to be very careful about keeping out of the way of automobiles and she answered that she would surely give them plenty of room.

She was walking north on the right side of the road when the Grant automobile came up behind her and another vehicle was approaching from the north. Both

were traveling at a rapid pace and met directly opposite the girl.

The man going south, Poulin claimed, “hogged the road” and forced him so far to the right that his front mudguard struck Miss Smith on the hip and she was thrown violently forward and struck on her face with great force on the ground.

Close behind the Grant car was Dr. Neumann, of Albany, on his way to his summer place at Brant Lake. He arrived just as the unconscious girl was being carried to the home of Chauncey Stafford nearby and after a hasty examination, stated that no bones were broken but feared there was serious injury to the head.

The physicians were unable to revive the girl and she died without regaining consciousness. The parents of the young victim were sent for immediately after the accident and were brought as quickly as possible in an automobile. Their grief was heart rendering to witness, as was that of the automobile driver, Mr. Poulin, who stayed in the area for two days after the accident.

Burial was in the Middleton Cemetery at Riverbank with the Rev. C.B. Alford officiating at the service.

ENDS HER LIFE WITH REVOLVER

Mrs. Minnie Wallace, widow of Henry Wallace, for many years stage manager of the Empire Theatre, committed suicide Saturday, Sept. 14, 1918 at her home on Notre Dame Street, Glens Falls, by shooting herself in the head with a revolver.

The body was found at noon by Miss Louise M. Cote, sister of Mrs. Ben C. Gurney, of Warrensburgh, who had a suite of rooms in the Wallace home.

Mrs. Wallace stood before a mirror and directed the bullet into her right temple. She had been in a depression state since the death of her husband about two years ago, and her condition had become worse since her only son, Arthur Wallace, entered the navy a few weeks ago. She was about forty-seven years old. Besides her son, she leaves a step-sister, Mrs. Blanche Dunn and a cousin, Mrs. Helen Barnes, of Schroon Lake.

QUIET AROUND TOWN

There has been a general departure of city guests for their homes during the past weeks in Warrensburgh and most of the local hotels and boarding houses, which have been entertaining them, have a rather deserted appearance. The season here has been the best we have had in several years.

GALA PARTY, GOOD MUSIC

Milton Magee entertained a merry party of young people at a dancing party Friday night, Aug. 30, 1918 at his home in Lewisville (lower River Street). Mr. Frank Scribner entertained the party with some wonderful selections on the harmonica, astonishing them with the volume and sound and exquisite harmony he produced from the simple little instrument.

Jabez Waddell, of Johnsburg, is suffering from an attack of lumbago.

Andrew Collard, of Newcomb, is laid up with blood poison in his knee.

William Hart, of Graphite, who recently cut off two fingers while chopping wood, is getting along nicely.

The quarantine for whooping cough is still on.

SWEET AND SOUR NOTES

More of our boys here have joined the army and have gone to help drive the Kaiser back to Berlin. Fourteen states have barred the teaching of the German language in their schools.

Albert Louis Emerson, 16, son of Senator and Mrs. James Alfred Emerson, of Warrensburgh, left Monday, Sept. 9, 1918 for Andover, Massachusetts where he will attend Philips Academy.

(Update — I will bet that he took his “natty” new 1918 “Hudson Six” runabout automobile with him.)

Van S. Jones is selling his residence property here in Warrensburgh on Burdick Avenue with barn, henhouse and half an acre of land.

In Athol, Truman H. Smith lost one of his Jersey cows. Allie Pasco has traded farms with Fred Moses, of Johnsburgh. The Shnnahan brothers have purchased a silo from the Griffin Lumber Company of Hudson Falls.

Neighboring Essex County has been collecting the 3 percent tax from Airbnb rentals for nearly two years, and according to Essex County Treasurer Michael Diskin, there has been a significant increase in the amount of occupancy tax collected.

“From the end of 2015 to now we have collected about $630,000 in additional occupancy tax. That’s a considerable adjustment,” Diskin said.

Diskin said he did not have a breakdown of the figures that would indicate how much was from Airbnb and how much was due to increased business at hotels and motels.

Diskin also said other online rental sites were not cooperating the way Airbnb is, and the county is telling those engaging in short-term rentals they would be responsible for collecting occupancy tax on their own.

Amy Levine from the Warren County Counsel’s office said she reviewed Essex County’s occupancy tax law and some other information, and looked at legislation and ordinances related to short-term rentals in other places in New York.

At least 24 of New York’s 62 counties have some agreement with Airbnb.

The Warren County Board of Supervisors will consider a change to its local law, which adds to the description of a hotel, motel or tourist facilities the phrase, “short-term vacation rentals,” and “any other similar accommodations by

Swan said charging occupancy tax on hotel and motel rooms, while not charging the same tax for short term house rentals, has been matter of contention for some business people.

“This is a hot-button item with hoteliers and towns,” Swan said.

Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce Gina Mintzer executive director spoke to the Board of Supervisors Legislative and Rules Committee last week. She said the issue is leveling the playing field for all people in the lodging businesses. Mintzer said she was aware the county has been negotiating with Airbnb, and believes this is the right thing to do from a legal standpoint, but said it’s about fairness in all areas.

“Right now, if you are a hotel or motel you have other regulations you have to adhere to - public health inspections, fire inspections, workers comp, things that keep the traveling public safe - that’s the concern from the lodging community,” Mintzer said.

She said while the chamber recognizes the need for Airbnb and its counterparts, those rentals should be subject to the same regulations.

“That’s from the voices of our members,” Mintzer said.

Asked if sales tax would also be applied to whole house rentals, Swan said that is a state issue and the county has no authority to collect state sales tax. He agreed it would be a good idea to tell the state it is collecting occupancy tax on short term house rentals.

Swan said the multi-year tax plan looks better than in the past few years, but adding short-term rentals would add an estimated $80,000 to $90,000 to the tax roles. ■

North Warren-Johnsburg cross-country team likely to continue its success

CHESTERTOWN | The North WarrenJohnsburg Cross-Country team has over many years, before and after their merger two seasons ago, built a remarkable legacy of success.

Through the years, this cross-country program has produced state tournament competitors, as well as about 50 Adirondack League All-Stars, while the team won a number of Section II championships.

Last year, North Warren-Johnsburg teammates Brandon Olden and Kenneth Mulvey were named to Class D All-State teams.

Johnsburg’s Dave Smith also participated in the state tournament along with Olden and Mulvey, cross-country coach Eric Bott said.

The boys team had really impressive success

in 2017 — they were honored as dual meet champions after achieving an undefeated team record in the league. Overall, the team was second in the Section II meet.

The 2017 girls team had similar success, ending their season 8-1 and securing second place in the league. In 2016, the entire boys team ran in the state tournament.

This year, Brandon Olden and Dave Smith are back, along with Davin Smith — and the trio are considered the top competitors at this point, Bott said.

For the girls team, Ava Anderson of Johnsburg and sister Sarah and Manon Stevens of North Warren are the leading runners.

Makayla LaGuerre, a freshman at North Warren, is also recording fast runs, Bott said.

“All of our athletes are working hard right now, in the weight room and over the trails — and they’re running well,” he said, predicting

that his runners will be quite competitive.

“I’m really excited to see the returners work

on improving and seeing what newcomers are going to step up and accomplish.” ■

Indian Lake-Long Lake looks towards future

INDIAN LAKE | The Indian Lake-Long Lake girls soccer team lost some formidable talent to graduation in June, but is now retooling in preparation for a strong season.

Standout graduates from that 2017 team include top scorers Maria Black and Lillian Dechene, each tallying 13 points last year. Black was the team’s captain for several years, having played varsity since 8th grade. She lead the team in assists, tallying 12.

Dechene was a versatile player who was a great defender and skilled at keeping the ball away from the goal. Also on varsity since 8th grade, she was known for her aggressive play.

Also leaving in June were Catherine Clark, solid on offense and a versatile utility player; plus Sydney Benton, a stalwart defender.

“We’ll be missing these players ‘big-time’,” Coach Emily Stephan said.

As of Aug. 29, the 2018 team had 15 players signed up, 12 of whom have played soccer before. Three foreign students are booked to join the team.

Top returning players, facing the challenge of lifting the team from their 3-10-1 league record, include: • Olivia Penrose, considered the team’s new defensive backbone; • Senior captain Lauren Johnson, regarded as an outstanding athlete and expected to be a solid forward and midfielder, setting up a substantial number of assists and shooting a lot of goals;

Mountaineers look to rebuild

MINERVA | The Minerva-Newcomb boys soccer team has a strong lineup for 2018, which is likely to propel the Mountaineers to a highly successful season.

After losing some strong players to graduation in June, there will be rebuilding to do, 17-year coach Millie Winslow said this week, but prospects are definitely bright.

Graduating were wing-striker Shane Hill, a team player known for his speed and passing;

dual halfbacks Peter and James Gocke, known for their endurance, intelligence and effective passing; and Jay Goodspeed, a solid player.

Predicted to step up and fill their roles are no less than seven seniors: strikers Adrien Comeau and Kaleb Davie, quick athletes and versatile scorers with good footwork; defender Caleb O’Donnell, known to be patient, fast, and agile on his feet; defender Andrew Saunders, a strong athlete — a former football player likely to intimidate opponents; midfielder Dave Rakhymzhan, a foreign student who has played one year overseas and looks good so far; Dmitrii Maliutin, an experienced

rugby player who is an aggressive defender; and Bruce Chikukwa, who coach Winslow says has great DNA — Bruce is brother of graduate Bryton, considered a outstanding soccer player who years ago was recruited for college soccer and took the Indian Lake-Long Lake team to the sectional finals years ago.

They’ll be joined by six juniors: experienced center striker Miguel Alonso of Spain; center defender Mason Allen, known as a good communicator and solid playmaker; goalie Ethan Armstrong, regarded as strong and skilled at his position; defender Ai Shirator of Japan who may end up being a key player;

and midfielder Zachary Phelps, known for his strength, smarts and endurance; and outside wing Alex Damashevitz of Newcomb, who is new to team, but is showing promise.

Coach Winslow said her team’s depth could be a big factor in a great season, but the players need to learn to anticipate each others moves, and many of them have to sharpen their fundamentals.

“I hope our athletes develop team chemistry,” she said. We really have potential, but it all needs to be put together. If we come together as a team we could be one of the top two or three contenders in the league. ■

MINERVA | Minerva-Newcomb girls soccer team is in a rebuilding year, with a looming question-mark pivotal in determining their season’s success.

The Mountaineers have five international students booked for the team, but as of Aug. 29, had not yet stepped onto campus, so coach Candice Husson is not sure what to expect about their athletic abilities. If they are skilled athletes, or learn fast to make up for the three weeks of lost practice time, the team may soar far beyond the 2017 squad’s 2-9 win-loss record.

Key players lost to graduation in June were Cassie Pratt, Alyssa Comeau and Rebecca Draper. Experienced goalie Grace Armstrong also won’t be back — she’s sidelined due to a concussion.

“We have a super-young team with only three returning players,” Husson said, noting the squad features one senior, three juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen.

but it takes time to learn to work together and play at the varsity level,” Husson said. “In the next few years, we’ll be seeing some really good things happening.”

So far, while waiting for the foreign students to arrive, Husson has been mentoring the local students in a rigorous routine, with the players practicing crossing, passing and taking outside shots on goal.

Husson said she feels that these shots from afar are going to be her team’s strength, and their key to winning games this year.

“I have some girls who can take big shots outside ‘the 18’, and it’s hard to defend long shots like that,” she said.

Cougars have battle-tested crew returning for 2018

CHESTERTOWN | Highly skilled players, armed with experience and determination, pack the lineup of the North Warren Field Hockey team this season — which may have historic significance.

This roster of talented players has a mission this year — to make their mark on the record books, because this may be the last season of independent field hockey at the high school.

School officials have talked of merging the North Warren field hockey program with Warrensburg or another school district, in an effort to strengthen athletic programs in the face of declining enrollment.

Meanwhile, the Cougars are looking forward to an action-filled season.

Last year, North Warren’s win-loss record was 3-9, but six of those defeats were by just one goal, and several contests were battles extending into overtime.

Four 8th graders were on the youthful team that gained valuable experience, coach Lyn Lewis said.

“Returning 10 members from last year’s

squad should give us a solid core to work with this season,” she said.

Two key players on the 2017 team — Paige Campbell, a skilled midfielder, and Alyssa Kramar, a versatile player — graduated in June, leaving a substantial number of veteran players to lead the 2018 campaign.

Top returning players this year are multi-year veterans Sydney Gagnon, Mattelyn Beadnell, Eliza Brown, Olivia Viele, Jackie Urtz and Lauren Monroe — backed up with a talented crew.

Lewis said Gagnon, an All-State award winner, is a playmaker with strong vision and keen hockey instincts who will lead the team from the midfield position, creating a lot of scoring opportunities. Brown is expected to take charge up front with her speed and skill in beating opponents to the goal, Lewis added. Also on the front line will be Lauren Monroe, considered a capable goal-scorer.

Mattelyn Beadnell will anchor the Cougar defense with her strong play, joined by Olivia Viele who has good defensive instincts. Urtz will again take on the tough role as goalkeeper, Lewis said.

“We have an awesome group of players with great team chemistry,” she continued. “We’ve got speed on the offensive end but need to work on finishing to put more scores on the board.” ■

The bond the runners share is partially due to the inclusive, supportive attitude that the team has enjoyed for many years — and has lead to competitive success.

This spirit has prompted the team to grow every year since it was founded — the Lake George Cross-Country teams now total 60 members.

A half-dozen or so accomplished Lake

George runners graduated in June, but some younger athletes will be stepping up and competing in their place, Smith said.

LAKE GEORGE | For decades, the Lake George Girls Soccer team has enjoyed remarkable success.

Last year, the team won the Adirondack League championship, all divisions, for the third year in a row.

WARRENSBURG | Delving into its seventh season in existence, the Warrensburg-Bolton Cross-Country team has promising prospects this year.

While the team was originally launched not only to provide a new option in athletics but provide a way for participants in other sports to keep in shape and build endurance, the cross-country athletes have garnered their share of success.

This year’s squad is exhibiting a strong sense of purpose and camaraderie, in part because of the strong turnout for both the girls’ and boys’ squads — six runners each, second-year head coach Chris Brown said.

“Our athletes came in this year really focused on the upcoming season, understanding they can have a lot of success,” he said. “All our runners push each other every practice.”

Experience, skill, depth — plus a shift from Class C to Class D — all will be key factors in their 2018 campaign.

They’ve got seven returning seniors who played vital roles in the 2017 team’s ascent into the Section II finals — they lost only two players this year to graduation.

“Gabby is a stellar dribbler with superior vision and tactical awareness,” coach Kohls said.

Also back for 2018 is junior defender Kylie Mann who is known to win one-on-one battles for the ball.

“Kylie anchors our extremely effective and organized defense, but she also has top-notch offensive skills,” Kohls said.

Senior midfielder Nicole Kingsley is known to be aggressive in corralling and keeping the ball for the Warriors, and Kohls said she has the dribbling and passing skills to make a difference on offense.

Senior goalie Samantha Jeckel is known to jump, dash and dive to keep balls from entering the net.

In 2017, the team amassed a 31-1 league record. The Section II championship game — the team’s first appearance in the Sectional final since 2009 — was a close loss to Vorheesville.

Every one of the players possess considerable skills and several of them are repeat league and area All-Stars. Alysia Kane is the muscular middle hitter who’s also a great blocker, Jade Baker and Julia Heunemann cover the outside with skill, Nikki Hladik is a solid all-around player and Adrianna Eigo is exceptional — particularly on defense. They are joined by Jasmine Burke, Samantha Henry and Elena Bieber, all accomplished veterans with solid skill-sets.

“We’re really strong throughout the roster,”

Senior defender Madison McDermid is regarded as a strong and forceful defender who stays focused.

The Warrior execute a pass-oriented style of play, attacking from the back to exploit holes in opponent’s defense.

“Our players are able to pass the ball out of pressure and retain possession,” Kohls said, noting they practice hard, compete with determination over entire games, and are supportive of each other on and off the field.

“Expectations are always high at Lake George, and this team has the potential to exceed them,” he said. ■

Brittany Jones said, noting their court vision.

Jones, who was on the Warriors’ 2008 Section II championship team, is starting her third year as head coach.

Moving down into a smaller school division will aid them in the Sectional tournament, although the Class D teams in Washington County have always been extremely competitive.

Although Jones’ players work hard, they have a lot of fun together. This positive spirit, plus their advanced skills, mean their games routinely enthrall their spectators.

“Watching them play together is very fun,” Jones said. “And our players have big goals this year.” ■

Warriors looking to repeat 2017 success

LAKE GEORGE | Last year’s Lake George Boys Soccer team may have been loaded with young players, but they developed skills fast, developed chemistry, and won the Adirondack League. In doing so, they defeated perennial powerhouse Fort Ann 1-0 to earn the Championship title.

The Warriors fought into the Section II finals, but lost

it 1-0 in the last 30 seconds. Their season ended 15-3-1.

Lost to graduation this year are All-State athlete Alex Jones, whose season tally was 21 goals and 17 assists. Jones is currently training with SUNY Potsdam. Also moving on is top defenseman Jacab Helms, who is now playing for SUNY Adirondack. 2017 standouts Brandon Bondy and midfielder Nick Hoffis will also be missed this year by the Warriors.

Despite the loss of these athletes, the Warriors are expected to again be one of the top teams in both the Adirondack League and Section II.

Heading up the 2018 Warriors roster are a number of talented athletes. All-League goalie Mason Flatley returns for his senior year. Flatley allowed only one goal in league play last year. All-League central defenseman Kagan Helms, a senior, will be anchoring the back line along with junior Colby Seguljic.

The 2017 squad’s second leading scorer, junior Ethan Knauf, will doubtlessly be key on offense this year. Veteran Paul Lindsay, outside midfielder, will also be crucial to victories.

Coach Blake White notes that the 2018 squad includes Alex and Colin Leonelli, who have proven themselves as a formidable duo.

“The Leonellis create havoc for the opponents, stalling the other teams offensive weapons,” he said.

White continued, noting that returning center midfielder Phillip Shambo is likely to be a key player, rebounding from 2017 when injuries were a problem.

White said his 2018 team has talent and they’re closeknit, which may help them in anticipating each others’ moves on the field.

“They are a skillful, gritty bunch,” he said.

The goals and expectations reflect the long-standing legacy of Warrior soccer — to win the Adirondack League and be among the top contenders in the Sectional tournament.

White said his players have the ability and attitude necessary to achieve those goals.

“I’m very excited about this group,” he said. ■

WarEagle football adopts wily new offense

LAKE GEORGE | With two smart, analytical athletes ready to take on the quarterback duties for the Lake George/HadleyLuzerne football team, coach Jeff Bennett is adopting a new offense that’s likely to keep opposing defenses perplexed.

He’s preparing his two quarterbacks — Michael Johnson and Cole Clarke — to engineer a “flexbone” offense that gives the dual playmakers an array of options in who will carry the ball.

“The flexbone spreads the competing defense out which allows us to effectively attack from the perimeter,” Bennett said. “I played against it in college, and I hated it — It’s brutal!”

Bennett said he trusts Johnson and Clarke to make savvy split-second decisions that will result in the team gaining the yardage it needs to win game after game this season.

“These two guys are street-smart — or shall I call it game-smart,” he continued.

“Johnson has great speed and quickness — and a very high IQ.”

Last season, the WarEagles ended up with a 4-5 win-loss record in the highly competitive Class C Northern Division — not dreadful but not where the WarEagles want to end up this year.

Among the standout athletes lost to graduation were lineman Matt Burrows as well as running backs Addison Kelly and Clay Moody who were also key on defense.

Returning veteran players include offensive lineman Chris Becker who has both impressive size and speed; wide receiver Shane Clarke who is strong and has “excellent hands,” Bennett said; running and defensive back Logan Duers who is very fast and is known to be tough; and offensive lineman and linebacker A.C. Gambino who the coach says “has excellent strength and a great nose for the football.”

Also, pivotal in the lineup is fullback/ linebacker Jimmy Kelleher, the coach said.

“Jimmy’s got incredible strength, speed and desire,” he said.

The coach described lineman Colby Hoolihan as a vocal player and a tenacious blocker with great footwork. Lineman Dillon McGrath, he said, has “monster size with excellent feet.”

Bennett added that lineman William Mitcham was “farm-strong and very tough.”

He concluded his roster review by noting that wide receiver and defensive back Andrew Warner “has excellent speed and toughness.”

Bennett continued that the players are all working hard to be highly competitive.

“They love the game of football and the team chemistry seems very good,” he said, describ-

ing the players as intently focused on their skill development and their respective roles.

“They’re very vocal, physical and fast,” he added.

The players grasp the strategies involved in football, and they are striving to improve, he continued.

“They’re really working on the mental aspect of the game,” he said, predicting a successful season. ■

Talented Burgher football team reloads for 2018

WARRENSBURG | For the last several years, the Warrensburg-Bolton football program has been advancing, fueled by an impassioned coaching staff, enthusiastic players and supportive parents.

Last year, the Burghers thrilled their fans with explosive action throughout their outstanding 7-2 season.

Their campaign ended with a Section II tournament quarterfinal loss to Cambridge, which went on to win the state Class D championship.

Among those lost to graduation in June were two of the best running backs in school history, Cole Lanfear and Trevor Prosser, who combined for nearly 3,000 of yards gained.

This year’s team has a deep roster of battletested athletes with solid talent.

Reterning is senior Evan MacDuff, the team’s three-year starting quarterback, running the plays that worked so well last year — but with new options added, coach Mike Perrone said. MacDuff is also a key defender.

Mac Baker and Jesse Griffin, juniors who backed up Lanfear and Prosser last year, will likely be the primary running backs for 2018.

Also key for 2018’s success is senior Hunter Mosher, a three-year offensive lineman and linebacker. He’s a strong player who makes key blocks that enable running backs to make their big plays that the Burghers are known for.

Senior tight end Brandon Bailey, another three-year starter, is a solid receiver who also blocks with power to create routes for end-run plays. On defense, he stops the sweeps to his side of the field.

Senior Chris Wilson, an outstanding wrestler and football player, is known for reading opponents’ plays and making big tackles. He lead the team last year in sacks. A warning to opposing players: Wilson is 250 pounds of solid muscle, and he knows how to use it.

Key newcomers include senior Alex Jackson, a towering 305-pound transfer from Saratoga; Tristen Hitchock, an eighth-grader who will compete for the starting center and middle-linebacker position; freshman Dylan Winchell, who earned a berth last year in the state wrestling

Nine of the Lady Jaguars taking the field this season will be experienced at the high school level. Carpenter currently has 13 on the roster, leaving him just two subs, and as a result he has the team working a lot on conditioning.

Thomas said he’s excited about the upcoming season, despite its challenges.

“So far, I’m seeing a great turnout and outstanding effort,” he said. ■

Colvin said the team is on a mission to achieve success this season, partially because Warrensburg and North Warren may merge their field hockey programs next year — so this could be the last season that the Burgher hockey players compete on their own.

Also, there’s Meghan McGurl and Kaitlin Burke, senior defenders who provide leadership, and Jordan Barker, a versatile athlete who has the ability to play both on the field and in the goal.

BOYS SOCCER TOO LOW ON NUMBERS

According to Johnsburg Central School Athletic Director Jill Toney, Johnsburg will not be fielding a varsity boys soccer team this season. Instead, the Jaguars will play modified boys soccer, as stated on the schedule. Toney said the Jaguars will have a junior varsity boys soccer team and may be willing to play other schools whose varsity teams are weaker or low in numbers.

“We based this decision on the fact that we have no juniors or seniors signed up for the upcoming season,” Toney said in an email. ■
