Primary Officials envision fire tower vote in replica in Charles Warren Wood Park County offered some surprises

QUEENSBURY | Warren County’s primary election June 25 offered up some surprises, chiefly because of some of the unexpected wide margins between several of the candidates.

In the race to secure the Republican endorsement for Warren County sheriff, sheriff ’s department major Jim LaFarr secured 63.6 percent of the vote, defeating county Undersheriff Shawn Lamouree, 2,278 to 1,286.

New York — an Adirondack fire tower.

Th is week, Warren County leaders endorsed an effort toward seeking state funding to construct a replica of a traditional Adirondack fire tower in the Charles R. Wood Park as a tourist attraction.

But the tower won’t be used as its coun-

terparts were in the early 1900s to spot forest fires — it will instead offer tourists and area residents a view of Lake George they’ve never seen before — as well as provide a history lesson about how for decades fire rangers were able to preserve millions of acres of wild forest. » Fire tower Cont. on pg. 7

Wood Park development drafted by Elan Planning in 2011 depicted a replica of an Adirondack fire tower and a pedestrian bridge over West Brook Road as two primary attractions of the venue. In recent weeks, interest has resurfaced about constructing such a tower, while the idea of the bridge was abandoned due to its expense.

Community spirit hailed at Warrensburg’s graduation ceremony

WARRENSBURG | During commencement exercises held June 28, graduating seniors of Warrensburg High School praised their teachers, parents and the area communities for their supportive, embracing spirit.

Noting the success of Warrensburg Central alumni during his valedictorian speech, senior Walter “Charlie” Weick said the school employees were “amazing” in their instruction and guidance.

“Our classes could not have asked for better teachers, coaches and administrators, from kindergarten to senior year,” he said, adding that the students’ parents also provided vital wisdom as “teachers of life.”

Class of 2019 president Nolan McNeill expressed a “huge thank you” to Class of 2019 advisers Mikelean Allen, Beth Callahan, Shannon Castro and Cecilia Hughes, as well as to parents, for their dedicated service.

All 49 members of the class expressed a heartfelt message to one of their teachers — Io Bruce, who died unexpectedly May 30 at age 54. In an affirmation of their affection

and respect for her, they held up dozens of cards that together spelled out: “Mrs. Bruce — You are an inspiration,” during a moment of silence held in her memory. High School Principal Doug Duell said she had an enduring positive influence on generations of students.

Salutatorian Nhu Lee also recalled Bruce’s impact on others, noting she “radiated kindness” and “gave 110 percent” to her work with students.

“Your legacy will never be forgotten,” Lee said.

Warrensburg Class of 1988 alumnus Jody Monroe, now superintendent of the Bethlehem school district, advised the seniors to follow Bruce’s example.

“Go and be somebody’s inspiration,” she said. “Aspire to be the person that she saw in many of you.”

Monroe recalled not only the positive influence of Bruce, but of WCS coach and instructor Mary Ann Bump, who died last year.

“What is most important are the relationships and the connections we have with each other,” Monroe said. “The most rewarding thing we can ever do is to make the lives of others better and inspire others to do the same.”

Nhu Lee talked about the entire community’s welcoming outreach to her when she immigrated to America from Viet Nam at age 6, noting how supportive and friendly people have been over the last 12 years.

“I never once felt different,” she said of her joining others in Warrensburg’s kindergarten.

LAKE GEORGE | The graduation exercises of Lake George High School Class of 2019 occurring on June 29 focused on the theme “Time Flies,” narrated by seven of the 10 top students of the Class of ‘67 commissioned to talk about the past, present and future.

Addressing the topic of the past, seniors Sarah Kohls, Mattie Williams and Graceann Bennett recalled the experiences of their class members in elementary, middle and high school, respectively.

Kohls reflected on the stress of timed tests, the competitiveness of the Greek Olympic Games, the rigor of “Kidnastics” and the challenge of running a full mile during elementary school. She urged her classmates to “look back with joy at all the things we have been through” and to cherish those memories.

was performed by other class members. Meanwhile, Cocozza spoke of the song’s deeper meaning of love, balance and partnership.

Superintendent Lynne Rutnik praised the seniors for pursuing academics and athletics with persistence and positivity, as well as for embracing the principles of inclusion and diversity.

“You have modeled excellence, humor and humility, and we recognize and applaud your accomplishments,” she said.

Characterizing the group’s athletic achievements as “astounding,” she noted the class achieved six league titles in their senior year.

She also praised the Class of 2019’s achievements in theater, music and art.

Rutnik also noted that the group’s pursuit of academics was exemplary, as their class had achieved the highest grade-point average at the school in a decade, and that the top 10 students academically were all female.

Concluding her remarks, she advised the seniors to continue to approach life with their positivity and persistence.

“Never lose your sense of wonder,” she said. “And remember that the Warriors back home love and support you!” ■

Photo by Thom Randall the Class of 2019, which resulted in a lot of shared laughter. She quoted a middle school science teacher as saying the diversity and the unique personalities of the group was what characterized their group.

Bennett noted that she and her classmates were “connected by a web of memorable stories” of their high school years together and that when shared, these memories would likely prompt “fits of laughter.”

Bennett recalled such humorous incidents including the Blue Zoo’s zany cheers that accompanied the boys basketball team’s campaign toward a state championship, and high school principal Fran Cocozza scaling a balcony during the class’s junior prom at a local resort to retrieve a flaming Chinese lantern — to save the resort from a major fire.

“Let’s realize that all our memories connect in one way — they remind us that no matter how far we go, Lake George is home,” she said, noting that she and her classmates were thankful for Cocozza’s “Spiderman instincts.”

Focusing on the present, Lynnaya Preuss noted that graduation day was a transition to a new stage in life. Urging her peers to believe in themselves and their varied talents, she said her classmates had remarkable potential, as they

were “spontaneous, bright, caring individuals who made an impact on Lake George High and will do the same out in the real world.”

Madison MacDermid, Gabriella Weidner and Nicole Kingsley spoke on the future.

MacDermid said she and her classmates were well prepared because of their strong, supportive bonds with school staff, and that they had learned how to work with others to solve complex problems.

“We know how to treat others, how to make the most of everything we have, and how to outwork and outlast anything placed in our way,” she said.

Weidner said that although her peers would be “flying through uncharted territory without that support system we’ve always known,” she and her classmates were well prepared as “navigators” to take on new challenges.

Kingsley offered her classmates some advice.

“If there’s something you’re passionate about, be there, be seen and work hard,” she said. “You all have it within yourself to achieve whatever you imagine.”

Campground holds Color Run for Autism Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Resort in North Hudson holds 2nd annual Color Run/Walk for Autism and Autism Awareness

NORTH HUDSON | On Saturday, June 22, families in support of and affected by Autism congregated at the Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in North Hudson to participate in the second annual Family Color Run/Walk for Autism, hosted by the Upstate New York Autism Alliance located out of Queensbury.

The campground owners, Mike and Gina Lenhard, wanted to provide a family-inclusive event in support of Autism.

They had, in the past, had the Gaddor brothers wrestling show but wanted more of an interactive approach for families.

“27 years ago I had a camper with a child who would come into our store and knock things down, a couple times

he broke something. This was at a time when there wasn’t much awareness about Autism. When I approached the mother of the unruly child, she informed me, “Well, you know he has Autism, right?” and I felt awful. I then looked up and read about the condition and learned about it. They still camp with us, and I like to support these kids and families,” said Gina Lenhard.

Runners started at the Main Office grounds where they donned white Yogi Bear T-shirts and “Hope for Autism” wristbands that were provided with registration. The campgrounds saw children and families book it or leisurely stroll through its dirt paths; smiles on faces, sun shining, with perfect temperatures for the event. Cost for the event was $20 or less, depending on age, and cheaper if pre-registered before the day of the event with the UNYAA. The tickets included entry into the Run/Walk, BBQ lunch, and day use of the grounds (including pools). Children bounced on the jumping pillow, explored the playgrounds, and shot out of the pool waterslide, with parents looking on. Raffles with prizes for adults and children were also on site.

“This is an awesome place, we really like coming here. This Color Run helps us to offset the price of a camp program we offer in August to 15 to 20 families. It provides so many experiences to these kids and allows for them to get together and do some really great things,” said Howarth. » Autism Cont. on pg. 7

The first Democrat Presidential Debates for 2020 have been held, and now the process of culling the herd has begun.

By Dan Alexander It’s pretty evident that • PUBLISHER • this first round of debates was much like the opening round of a boxing match. Each of the 20 candidates was cautious not wanting to make a major error nor trying to discredit a fellow Democrat. It was evident that each was feeling out the process.

Sooner or later, the gloves will come off to ultimately settle the nomination.

From someone who resides on the conservative side of independent, many of the themes discussed seemed like a major departure from past Democrat debates; when the talking points between Democrat or Republican candidates never seemed quite so far apart.

Perhaps it is more my age than political persuasion but while the old adage used to be, America, Love it or Leave it, today might be more appropriate to say America, Don’t like it, Just Change it.

It will be interesting to watch the older candidates hold their ground against the young up and coming crowd who feel more in touch with younger generation voters.

While politics is a tough business; I find it unfair to compare today’s social attitudes to those from 40 years ago. Senator Harris’ attack on Vice President Biden’s actions in the past working with segregationist senators to pass legislation may register with younger voters, but it is hard to use today’s attitudes to judge actions back then with what were normal attitudes of the day.

I’m certain if our history holds true to form socially accepted positions today, right or wrong, will be judged inappropriate at some time in the future.

I also struggle with the positions regarding undocumented immigrants. As an employer, I can’t hire nor pay an undocumented immigrant, despite the tight labor market. I don’t understand how so many of them can be in the country and supporting themselves, yet the candidates discussed how they pay into the social security system but can’t receive benefits.

With a nation so far in debt, offering health care, education and other taxpayerfunded benefits would not have been so well received just a few short years ago.

While not likely to succeed, I thought John Delaney’s approach to the issues were more common sense based.

As the debate season continues into the fall, it will be interesting to watch how the candidates will differentiate themselves on some of the major issues, as right now many seemed to be bunched up.

Will breaking out from the pack prove to be the successful path to the nomination or just the fast track home? Stay tuned as the campaigns continue to evolve. ■

Lamouree had campaigned on his experience in obtaining grants, establishing the resource officer program in area schools, managing the sheriff ’s department’s operations and boosting interaction with the community.

Political observers save said the campaign has to date been a civil one, considering the conduct of past races in the county for the sheriff post. The two will face off again in November, as Lamouree will be on the ballot representing the Independence Party, and LaFarr’s name will be on both the Conservative and Republican lines.

In Bolton, incumbent town supervisor Ron Conover won the Republican line in November for another two-year term in office over challenger Alexander “Zandy” Gabriels, in a decisive 141-7 vote. Gabriels has not sought another line on the ballot, so Conover’s re-election in November is virtually assured. Conover is now serving his third year as the chairman of the county Board of Supervisors.

In the Town of Horicon, voters were to select two of three candidates for the Republican line for town board on the November ballot. Sylvia L. Smith obtained 104 votes, Peter Palmer followed with 103, and William L. Siegle II finished third with 53 votes.

In Johnsburg, winning the Republican line for town board on election night were incumbent Gene Arsenault and political newcomer Justin Gonyo, who served as general manager of the Saratoga-North Creek Railway. They won 126 and 94 votes, respectively, but the election may be decided by absentee ballots, as incumbent Peter Olesheski received all 88 write-in votes for the position. He had not circulated petitions to be on the ballot because he was

I’ve had the opportunity to win several times and haven’t gotten it done, so today is a pretty special day,” said Scanlon, who earned his first career win in FLW Tour competition. “I’ve been fishing tournaments since I was 15 and it’s not easy out here, but days like this make it all worth it.”

Scanlon spent the event targeting largemouth down near Ticonderoga. Early in the tournament, most of his bass came off shallow rock inside of a milfoil edge. As the tournament progressed, though, he caught more fish from the grass, with all of his keepers today coming from the grass.

“I did junk it up a little bit, but I got myself in some decent areas, and I tried to make the most out of them by switching baits and trying some different stuff throughout the tournament,” said Scanlon.

Scanlon did have a primary area that produced his initial limits on days one through three – a pair of main-lake points along Champlain’s eastern shoreline that were swept by current. On Sunday, the area didn’t produce, but he was able to make the necessary adjustments to put together a solid limit.

“The fish were obviously using the current to feed, and there was bait there, which was a big key,” said Scanlon. “You’d see a lot of activity in the grass. That’s probably the main reason those fish were there.”

In his areas, Scanlon used a ⅜-ounce chartreuse and white Z-Man ChatterBait with a white soft jerkbait trailer for rocks and scat-

tered milfoil, and a green copper shad-colored Luck-E-Strike Series 3 square-billed crankbait on rocks and in looser grass. A few fish early in the tournament bit a Luck-E-Strike Pow Stik, rigged with either a 3�16- or ¼ounce Bass Pros Shops tungsten weight, and a black and blue Bass Pros Shops tube. He also ran a ½-ounce Trophy Swim Jig through lily pads and pencil reeds in shallow water.

“I needed a big derby to make the FLW Cup,” said Scanlon. “I knew I probably needed a top-12 [finish] here to make it and we’re sitting here now. I’m ready to go to Hot Springs.”

When I’d catch a few, I would slow down and pick it apart with the Pow Stik,” said Scanlon. “I was just fortunate to dial into the fish every day – locations and baits changed daily on me.”

The committee’s decision, which includes paying the Elan firm $4,900 for their work, is subject to approval July 19 by the full county Board of Supervisors. The grant application, to be submitted through the state’s consolidated funding process, bears a deadline of July 27.

Following the meeting Tuesday, Blais said a fire tower replica would give visitors to Lake George a new, memorable experience.

“People have heard of Adirondack fire towers, but they may not have seen one or climbed up one. The view from the top of the tower up the lake would be magnificent — the tower would be a major attraction,” he said.

Blais predicted that the state might opt to pay for up to 95 percent of the structure’s cost, as they have for other features of Charles Wood Park.

For about 70 years, Adirondack fire towers had a prominent role in preserving the natural landscape.

The total purse for the FLW Tour at Lake Champlain presented by T-H Marine was more than $860,000. The tournament was hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau. In FLW Tour competition, the full field of 163 pro anglers competed in the two-day opening round on Thursday and Friday. The top 30 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advanced to Saturday. Throughout the season, anglers were also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2019 FLW Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing.

After two massive fires at the turn of the 20th century burned about 1 million acres of woods in the Adirondacks, fire towers were built — first from timber in 1909, then out of steel in the following years — so forest rangers could detect blazes and hasten response of firefighters. As many as 57 such structures were built in the Adirondacks.

But in the 1970s, fire detection by aircraft was deemed more efficient, and the fire towers were decommissioned.

Most of them were dismantled, while others rusted in place.

In recent decades, however, private groups have launched efforts to save and restore the remaining fire towers.

Lake George Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson said a fire tower replica in Wood Park could educate both area visitors and residents about the history of fire protection in the Adirondacks.

“It would be a real tourist draw — an educational, historic attraction,” he said. ■

County elections officials said July 1 that absentee ballots, which could decide the outcome of this race, would likely be counted the next day. Unsuccessful in his effort to secure a G.O.P. endorsement for the town board post was Roger Mosher with 28 votes.

For the town highway superintendent post, Frederick Comstock III outpolled Curtis Richards, 109-52, for the G.O.P. endorsement — and there were 14 write-ins that remained uncertified as of July 1.

In Queensbury, Anthony Metivier defeated Paul Ryan, 347-219, for the G.O.P. endorsement for Queensbury Ward 4 council member; and Travis Whitehead won the Independence line over Jennifer Switzer by a vote of 18-2.

In the Town of Chester, incumbent town Supervisor Craig Leggett prevailed in the rare situation in which the primary ballot had no names listed, but was open to write-ins for the Democratic endorsement. He received 53 write-in votes to 23 for challenger John Maday.

The voting for the Chester supervisor post was prompted after an “opportunity to ballot” was filed for the Democratic line — and it wasn’t Leggett who sought the write-in opportunity, he said.

“I guess I’m the accidental Democratic candidate now,” Leggett said.

Leggett is seeking re-election on the Independence line — and may be on the Libertarian line as well — and county sheriff ’s investigator Maday is challenging him under several ballot labels, including the Republican and Conservative lines. ■

Expert to speak on nesting Adirondack loons

NEWCOMB | Dr. Nina Schoch will talk about loons at the Adirondack Interpretive Center (AIC) from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, July 11.

In “Unveiling the Secret Lives of Nesting Adirondack Loons,” Schoch will discuss the results of her most recent research on the Adirondack common loon.

Schoch is the chief scientific officer for the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation in Saranac Lake. She has been studying Adirondack loons since 1998, and in 2014 was inducted into the N.Y.S. Outdoorsmen Hall of Fame.

This lecture is just one of a summer-long series of lectures (the “Huntington Lecture Series”) given at the AIC. These lectures are presented every Thursday evening from 7-8 p.m. through July and August. They are free and everyone is welcome to attend.

Riverfront Arts Festival to take place

WARRENSBURG | The Adirondack Riverfront Arts Festival will showcase the work of Adirondack artisans in a “Made in the Adirondacks” festival Friday, July 12, from 3-6 p.m. In addition to selling their work, the artisans will also demonstrate the how-tos of their creations.

Blacksmithing, rustic furniture building, paper bead making, basketry, jewelry design, spinning and painting are just some of crafts that will be demonstrated. Local author Pat Leonard returns to sign and personalize her books.

The Warrensburg Farmers Market will be in full swing as well, with George Perrott providing live music from the gazebo. ■

Piano virtuoso, singer to perform

BOLTON LANDING | Piano virtuoso Milton Rubén Laufer will perform in a special concert titled “Reflections of the Caribbean” on Saturday, July 6, at 7:30 p.m., at The Sembrich. This program will explore music by composers from the islands including Ernesto Lecuona and Rafael Hernandez.

Also featured on the concert is music of composers inspired by the allure of Havana including “Three Preludes” of George Gershwin and “Suite Española” by Isaac Albeniz. The evening will conclude with a set of songs by Lecuona performed by soprano Marina de Ratmiroff, a Venezuelan native. Beth Joseph Synagogue begins summer services

TUPPER LAKE | Beth Joseph Synagogue, the oldest extant synagogue in the Adirondacks, will be open for Shabbat services from July 5 through Aug. 30. Services start at 7 p.m. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services are also planned.

The synagogue, which was built in 1906 and is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, conducts guided tours Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Of note is a collection of archives, photographs and memorabilia of Jewish life in the Adirondacks.

The synagogue can be booked for bar mitzvahs and weddings as well. Summer concerts are planned, but details have not been finalized.

Expert to speak on Adirondack archaeology

CHESTER | Dr. David Starbuck, local archaeologist and author, will present “Archaeology In The Adirondacks” July 17 at 7 p.m. on the second floor of the Museum of Local History at the Town of Chester Municipal Center. His areas of expertise include the archaeology of America’s forts and battlefields and the archaeology of utopian societies. Starbuck has edited or published nearly 20 books, more than 130 articles and presented more than 500 papers along with talks at local, regional and national conferences. His most current book is “Archaeology in the Adirondacks” published in 2018. ■

North Warren seniors reflect on bond with community, shared experiences

CHESTERTOWN | Watching the 26 seniors at North Warren High School go onstage for their graduation ceremony June 29, school counselor Mike Terrio said they were an accomplished, talented group of students.

“These seniors qualified for more than $51,000 in scholarships, and that’s a testimony to not only the generosity of the North Warren community, but the students’ hard work,” he said, noting that several of the students had chosen to pursue careers in the professions of medicine or education. “Due to their outstanding personal attributes, these graduates will make a great impact on the lives of people they interact with in the years to come.”

One of those graduates, Olivia Viele, offered her thoughts. She is headed to SUNY Oneonta to study biology in preparation for a medical career.

“I’m excited to get started on my studies,” she said, noting she was thankful for all the support she and her classmates had received throughout their school years. “With such a small school as ours, we’re really close.”

“Mr. Martin was very involved, fair and always willing to support the students,” he said.

A half-hour later, Martin urged the seniors to strive to surpass previous generations.

“We want you to be better parents, better leaders and better members of society,” he said. “We want you to live a productive life and make the right decisions in times when it matters most.”

Howe said that the school years “flew by,” and over that time she and her classmates were like family, united to tackle challenges. She praised parents and school staff — particu-

Kim Sabo, an English teacher who taught the Class of 2019 as juniors and seniors and

directed three musicals in which many of the students participated, gave the main speech of the ceremony — by popular demand. Armed with her keen observation of the class’s exploits since kindergarten, she recalled with considerable humor many of their accomplishments, follies and adventures over their time at North Warren.

This included building rockets, hatching baby turtles and seeing a “live mummy” in an Albany museum during elementary school; then in their high school years tackling challenging classes while organizing fundraisers, enduring Sabo’s singing in the hallways and achieving notable sports accomplishments.

The theme of her speech was the motto “Open Mind. Iron Will. Can’t Fail,” depicted on a sign over her classroom door this past year, a sign which many class members would slap as they departed each day.

The “open mind” phrase, she said, refers to the seniors continuing their education whether in college or vocational training — as well as learning from life’s challenging experiences.

“As you leave North Warren, it is my hope that you have an open mind to embracing change and exploring what is new,” Sabo said.

In illustrating the “iron will” segment, she recalled the Marine veteran who crawled the final 100 yards of the 2019 Boston Marathon on his hands and knees over the finish line.

“If you’ve opened your mind, learned something of value and tried your hardest, how could any result ever be seen as a failure?” she said.

School board president John Maday, assisted by Martin and Therio, handed out the diplomas. Martin and Superintendent Michele French announced the graduation awards and scholarships.

French offered her congratulations to the Class of 2019 for reaching their milestone of graduation.

“We are so proud of you and the legacy you have left here at North Warren,” she said. “We can’t wait to see what is next for each of you!” ■

“These moments are the reasons why I’m so grateful for having grown up here,” Lee said. “It’s so heartwarming to be a part of this loving community. I love the close relationships and the interconnections people have here.”

Superintendent John Goralski advised the graduating seniors to “focus on the positive” and not dwell on regrets.” He warned them that life isn’t always fair, and they won’t always get to control circumstances.

“What you do control is how you choose to react to the curveballsI that life throws at you,” he said, introducing Duell as a “great philosopher.”

Duell didn’t disappoint.

“Being in the present and staying connected to people will give you a lifetime of happi-

ness,” he said, urging the seniors to put down their digital devices and reach out to people in need. “Stay connected to your family, friends and your community — they are important.”

The ceremony featured musical selections from the Junior-Senior High School Chorus and the Mastersingers group. Solos in the songs were performed by Stephanie Brown, Grace Cupp and Thomas Birkholz.

As is traditional, the Minerva Historical Museum will open for the season on Minerva Day beginning at 2 p.m. featuring an exhibit on Tahawus and a ceremony to honor the town’s Citizen of the Year — Kathleen DeGuilme. She is a town employee who runs the Minerva meal site and volunteers for many community efforts.

The Minerva Hometown Parade is to roll through town beginning at 5 p.m. It starts at Sporty’s Iron Duke Saloon and proceeds for a half-mile to Minerva Lake. Shortly afterward, the festival shifts into high gear at Donnelly Beach with Minerva’s annual community potluck dinner, attracts 150 or so people annually. Rock music by the Gregson Brothers Band starts at 6:30 p.m., and this gathering includes a bounce house for children, popcorn and games.

A dramatic fireworks show occurs at about 9:30 p.m., which Corey said is one of the best in the southern Adirondacks.

On Sunday, alumni of Minerva Central School are to hold a brunch from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Minerva Lake Pavilion, and the art show reopens from noon to 3 p.m. at the Community Center.

On Sunday evening, an event is held that displays the geniality of the Minerva community. A “Thank You” concert is held in Olmstedville’s Courtney Park to show appreciation toward those who attended Saturday’s festivities. This year, the rock band Fingerdiddle is to perform from 6 to 8 p.m. ■
