NORTH CREEK | Mike Wilson, a senior at Johnsburg Central School and member of North Creek Volunteer Fire Department, was recognized last month as a new Eagle Scout, scouting’s highest honor.

For many years, Mike was an active

member of North Creek Troop 36, but completed his Eagle requirements through Chestertown Troop 30.

Few Boy Scouts get to this level of recognition and responsibility.

Successful candidates must complete at least 21 merit badges as well as plan and implement a service project. Eagles must also have a track record of troop leadership and a successful Board of Review result.

Eagle scout given wings

LAKE GEORGE | The Warren County Board of Supervisors have recognized Serena Ruzbacki and Jessica Young, two women who overcame years-long obstacles and graduated from a two-year SUNY Adirondack program, and who will be pursuing degrees at four-year colleges.

Ruzbacki, 23, grew up moving back and forth between her parents’ homes in Minerva and Johnsburg, graduating from the Minerva Central School.

In her final semester of high school, she was taking one college class per day while struggling with undiagnosed mental health issues.

Ruzbacki was eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder after a suicide attempt.

TICONDEROGA | State agencies are holding the salt.

The state Department of Transportation will use less of the substance this winter in a pilot program designed to monitor the environmental impacts of its application, a practice watchdogs contend is the modern-day equivalent to acid rain.

A test area in Lake George will cover a 17-mile stretch of Route 9N from the Village of Lake George to the Town of Bolton.

The world competition — which featured 1,600 teams from 30 nations around the world, including China, Egypt, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia as well as the U.S. — was held in late April. Ninety of the team competed in the same tournament division as Lake George.

Larry Stroebel, technology and engineering teacher at Lake George High, served as coach for the team of 14 juniors and two seniors from LGHS. He developed and launched the robotics class at the start of the 2016-17 school year.

This year’s team from Lake George designed and built two different robots that possessed skills that complemented each other.

In a 12-feet diameter arena, the Lake George robots — which function on entirely autonomous programs that analyze data feedback from built-in sensors — competed with against pairs of robots fielded by opposing teams. The challenge in this year’s competition was to repeatedly pick up and stack weighted cones Stroebel said the students on each team had to develop multi-functional systems for the robots to move around and accomplish their work in the timed competitions.

Earlier during this school year, the Lake George team won nine different awards in four tournaments, a feat that qualified them for the New York State competition, he said.

With the students developing strategies, programming and building the robots and analyzing performance data during development, the students acquired considerable engineering, programming and problem-solving skills, Stroebel said.

“It was absolutely a great learning experience for our students, he said. “While just getting to the world competition was outstanding, they achieved some remarkable wins there.”

Stroebel said the Lake George students thoroughly enjoyed socializing with others from around the world during the four-day event.

“They had a blast,” he said. ■

Young was able to get financial aid, and 15 years after she first attempted to get a college degree, she graduated with an overall grade point average of 3.2, making the Deans List every semester since resuming classes in 2016.

She has been accepted to SUNY-Plattsburgh, where she will begin working on a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice in the fall.

Ruzbacki and Young each received a Certificate of Excellence, presented by Supervisor Peter McDevitt (Glens Falls-Ward 2), a member of the Personnel and Higher Education Committee.

Both women received diplomas last month at a graduation ceremony at the Glens Falls Cooling Insuring Civic Center.

McDevitt, who spoke at the SUNY graduation, quoted President George Bush at the board of supervisors meeting, saying Bush was known to tell graduates, “I was a very consistent C student.”

According to McDevitt, Bush went on to congratulate those who graduated with honors and distinction, but told the C students, “You too can be president.” ■

The two were identified by SUNY Adirondack as students who overcame obstacles to earn degrees from the two-year college located in Queensbury. The women graduated on May 11, and both plan to attend a four-year college in the fall.

After switching majors several times, she left a trail of bad grades before she dropped out of college having earned a 1.75 grade point average. She became a mother shortly thereafter, and single mother not much later.

She worked various jobs to support herself and her son, and while working two jobs feared the threat of homelessness was just one missed paycheck away.

Without a degree, she felt her options were limited, and she applied and was accepted to SUNY Adirondack a second time. However, due to her past record at the school, she was told she could not receive financial aid.

“I knew I could not pay out of pocket, and I started to cry right on the couch in the office,” Young said.

She was able to overcome her disability with the help of medication, therapy and the support of family and friends, noting that for the last two and a half years, she has been off medication.

Ruzbacki graduated with a 3.02 grade point average and has been accepted into the Linguistics Program at SUNY Albany for the fall semester.

Young entered SUNY Adirondack right after she graduated high school in 2004.

At the time, she was not interested in academics and spent much of her time enjoying her new freedoms and partying with friends.

To the list of Warren County registrants from which men are to be called for service in the National Army, on June 5, 1918, there was added the names of 195 young men who have become 21 years old by that date.

On June 14, 1918 we will celebrate Flag Day, and there should be a general and elaborate display of the national emblem everywhere in Warrensburgh. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that we are definitely at war.

BOYS SERVING “OVER THERE”

Cpl. Albert L. Hall, son of George B. Hall, of Warrensburgh, has arrived overseas with the American Expeditionary Forces. He is with Troop M, 15th US Cavalry.

His mother has already received a letter from him stating that he had arrived “safe and in good health.”

Dr. John M. Griffin is serving as a first lieutenant in the Medical Corps.

Warrensburgh photographer Earl Calhoun Austin is serving his country overseas.

Joseph Anselmo, of Warrensburgh, is serving in the war in Italy and France.

Joseph A. Aiken, 29, is also serving in Italy and France. He is an ambulance driver.

Pvt. Edwin Nelson, son of Mrs. Etna Nelson, of Gloversville, has arrived in France safely.

Leo Smith, 26, son of Henry and Minnie Smith, of Warrensburgh, is serving in the 303rd Infantry.

Sgt. Walter C. Young, of Chestertown, is in the trenches of France. He was in the 9th Regiment of the Syracuse Brigade holding the line nearest Paris. He has lost hearing in his left ear.

William Hadden, formerly machinist in the shirt factory, who went into the army several weeks ago in the machinists section of the aviation corps, is now in St. Louis, where he was sent by the government for special training in the David Rankin mechanical school.

MOTHERS PRAY FOR THEIR BOYS

An American Red Cross nurse in a French hospital says there is one word she has learned in many languages. The word “mother” is oftenest on the lips of a sick or wounded soldier in pain or delirium.

(Update – The word “son” was on the lips of many a mother who prayed on her knees at night that her son would not starve or die in the muddy trenches in France.

LAKE GEORGE | The Lake George Village Board and village Public Works Superintendent Dave Harrington discussed plans for improvements to municipal infrastructure during the board’s special meeting last month.

Harrington announced the local roadways that would be paved this summer: Lower Amherst Street from the lake to Canada Street; Prospect Street from Philips Street to the village line; a southwest stretch of Smith Street near the Northway; and Dieskau Streetfrom Sewell Street to Mohican Street.

The board approved a contract with HMA Contracting of Mechanicville to pave several of the above streets at a cost of $63,462.

Harrington also noted that his department had work to accomplish on roadway drainage, particularly on Iroquois Street from Montcalm Street to Mayard Center.

Also, Harrington said a project to replace a water main on Philips Street would be postponed until next year due to the projected cost, which has necessitated scaling back the project.

He said that since the village received a project bid that was $100,000 to $150,000 above expectations, the village public works department would be tackling a substantial portion of the work. The project includes not only replacing the six-inch water main, but installing three new hydrants and various valves, as well as connecting service to 15 homes and enterprises along Philips Street between Cortland and Prospect streets.

The reason for the unexpected expense of the project, Harrington said, was the vastly increased cost of steel and iron. These price hikes followed President Donald Trump’s imposition of a tariff hike on up to 25 percent on foreign steel.

The project is to be re-bid this summer, with completion

by early fall 2019, with reconstruction of Philips Street to follow thereafter.

Also, Harrington reported that the Shepard Park restroom renovation project would be substantially complete

by June 15, the day that Shepard Park Beach opens for the summer. As of Monday, a date for the rest-room ribboncutting ceremony had not been scheduled.

In other business, the village board awarded a contract for village insurance underwritten by New York Municipal Insurance Reciprocal through locally-based Upstate Agency. Th is upcoming fiscal year’s premiums for the insurance total about $90,000, a 1.7 percent increase from the present year.

Town Clerk Debra McKinney informed the board that the village received insurance compensation of about $3,000 to pay for new firefighters’ outerwear, heat-damaged when the emergency personnel stood by at a sanctioned bonfire during Adirondack Pub & Brewery’s BarrelFest held in March.

Village Mayor Robert Blais said that problems have increased this year with delivery trucks parking on village side-streets — particularly Amherst and Iroquois streets — blocking the driveways of homes and businesses.

He said that in one incident — which nearly devolved into fistfight — a truck driver parked his delivery van so it blocked access to Duff y’s liquor store, then he went out to lunch — and he had to be hunted down to move his rig.

Blais said the driver’s illegal parking prevented a patron of the store from leaving Duff y’s parking lot.

Blais added that there has also been an increase in illegal parking in the alley parallel to Canada St. He said that some of the No Parking signs had been removed in recent months — and that several employees of a local tavern were issued tickets last week.

Blais said he was issued a parking ticket last weekend, and he paid the $20 fine. Noting that he routinely turns down frequent requests to nullify parking tickets, he said he’d be using the incident to justify his routine response.

“I’ll be telling them I can’t fi x their ticket — I’ll show them my receipt — I paid my own!” he said. ■

A deceptive master plan A thought crossed my mind the other day after listening to the many condemnations of President Trump.

By Dan Alexander Just think about the • PUBLISHER • extreme reactions we’ve seen since becoming president.

Calls for impeachment, negative press coverage from nearly every corner, late night humorists begging for a good old recession and entertainers cheering profanity-laced insults.

Now to the other end of the spectrum with historic accomplishments in regulation rollbacks and unemployment lows, a booming economy, and packed town hall meetings, while ISIS and beheadings have all but vanished.

Call me nuts, but something doesn’t add up.

Presidential politics have always been a polite slight-of-the-hand facade, mixed with lots of spin, pomp and circumstance.

Consider this for just a minute: What if there is just too much pessimism highlighting his supposed erratic behavior from this once highly acclaimed, successful entrepreneur?

Going through the traditional presidential motions in recent times hasn’t done much for the country.

No one fears us. We’ve become a paper tiger with a do-nothing Congress and red lines that mean little from the chief executive’s office.

The current White House resident gets little to no credit for the many accomplishments done in record time, and no one wants to talk about his approval record now on par with Presidents Reagan and Obama at the same point in their presidencies.

As crazy as it sounds, what if all this hoopla is a well-choreographed, covert strategy?

Heck, even if it isn’t a well-designed plan, it does seem to be working to perfection.

The U.S is no longer seen as an accommodating rich uncle. World leaders seem a little disoriented. Our trade imbalance, immigration and a multitude of other international issues could be resolved when we are not so easy to read, and he doesn’t back down from political heat or poor publicity.

An unpredictable, name calling, counter punching, tweeting businessman with no political experience just had his first sit down with the Hermit Kingdom chairman, which in itself was never even a remote possibility a mere few months ago when “Little Rocket Man” was lobbing nukes over Japan and threatening to send them our way.

Who knows, our neighbors to the north might just be in on the whole crazy scheme, playing their part at last weekend’s G-7 event.

Maybe someday they’ll let us in on the plan, but for now, so long as we keep moving the agenda forward, let’s play along.

Perceived mayhem might be a far better persuader than artificial saber rattling. ■

County erred in snubbing Tobacco 21 Essex County lawmakers narrowly snuffed out raising the legal age to purchase tobacco products in the county from 18 to 21 years old last week.

Lawmakers opposed to the measure cited open enforcement questions and the economic impact on retailers, particularly those near the Warren County line.

We recognize the merits of those arguments. But lawmakers ultimately decided to endorse a decision that will be deleterious for their constituents in the long run.

Smoking kills people and drives up health care costs. The Essex County Board of Supervisors owns that now.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the U.S., killing a half-million Americans every year, including 28,000 New Yorkers.

From an economic standpoint, the habit costs $170 billion in health care expenditures nationwide, with direct and indirect losses to the U.S. economy

totaling $330 billion.

Here in New York state, tobacco-related health care costs total $10.4 billion, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

Medicaid, which covers one-third of state residents, picks up $6.62 billion of those costs.

How can lawmakers claim to be fiscally conservative when they had a choice to curb a habit that will ultimately drive up costs for their constituents?

Costs to treat conditions like diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will boomerang back to local taxpayers, who will be required to foot the tab.

The share shouldered by state taxpayers will likely rise as the White House and Republican-controlled Congress continues to chip away at Obamacare, leading to sustained marketplace destabilization and rising health care costs.

U.S. has spending priorities mixed up

To the Editor: I sit here watching and reading about the many billions of our tax dollars that flow to the illegal alien and drug problem involving the Mexican border, the unknown millions Gov. Andy Cuomo’s Medicaid taxi service has allowed to be stolen, billions for state environmental causes, and I think perhaps this is why we have so little to help American senior citizens survive.

In 2016, the federal government gave Mexico $160 million in foreign aid, this year $87 million.

We’ve sent cash for many years. Why are we borrowing money (deficit spending) for a country that does nothing to protect our common border from the influx of illegal aliens and drugs?

Obama sent $1.7 billion in cash to terror sponsoring Iran in the middle of the night. Where did it come from and who authorized it?

I fear we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg regarding Andy’s Medicaid taxi fraud scheme and free college plan which will likely include illegal aliens.

Recently our family spent five months seeking financial assistance to help support a brave 94 year old female American World War 2 veteran.

Despite numerous referrals to various agencies, many hours of meetings and phone calls with these agencies, we came away with very little help.

While all expressed a goal of helping the elderly remain in their homes rather than nursing homes, few assured anything. Hospice care and dementia programs were the exceptions and helped.

the Tobacco 21 movement is gaining steam across the state, with Ulster County joining Orange, Westchester, Albany and New York City as localities that have already raised the minimum age of purchase.

All school districts in Essex County have also passed measures of support.

Seventy-five percent of adults nationwide support raising the age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including 70 percent of smokers themselves.

Ninety-five percent of smokers begin before the age of 21, so raising the age to stop the habit before it starts is a no brainer.

All of this puts the Essex County lawmakers who voted against this measure squarely outside of the mainstream on this issue.

Clinton and Warren counties haven’t yet voted on the measure.

Let’s hope they err on the side of reason unlike their Essex County counterparts.

Loss of Emerald’s felt in community

To the Editor: Ticonderoga has lost its best restaurant with the fire at the Ti Country Club!

Emerald’s was, in our opinion, the best restaurant in the Ticonderoga area.

Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the club building and Emerald’s, which was over the Pro Shop.

Our prayers go to the four people who were injured in the explosion and subsequent fire. Thank God no lives were lost, and the patrons escaped without harm.

Emerald’s will be missed by us and many friends who shared our views about the food and service. We have heard the Country Club will be rebuilt and hopefully Emerald’s will be part of the effort.

Our hearts go out the workers who will suffer a loss of wages and hopefully they will gain employment until the restaurant can be rebuilt.

Ticonderoga is a place of history and the Country Club is on grounds that were once a Native American village.

During the French and Indian War, Lord Howe and his English soldiers fought to protect Ti from harm. During the American Revolution, Ticonderoga was made famous for supplying the cannons George Washington needed in Boston.

Henry Knox, a young officer, and his men moved the cannons from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston some 300 miles in 56 days.

The Americans had the high ground and fired on the British who got to their ships and sailed away. This was the first victory of our revolutionary army.

We owe them thanks not only for saving our country but for putting Ticonderoga on the map.

Emerald’s Restaurant has also put Ti on the map with its great menu, food and service. Just as the phoenix, Emerald’s will rise from the ashes and we will once again enjoy its hospitality.

Silver Bay resident calls for safety measures on hazardous road

To the Editor: Recently I returned to Silver Bay for the summer season. I am compelled to comment on a problem that has plagued Silver Bay Road for many years and is getting worse and worse.

I refer to the speeding on the section of road where I live, north of the Silver Bay Inn on Oneida Bay. With the current construction of the new dining hall, traffic on the road has increased noticeably including passenger vehicles bringing workers to the site, light trucks and even large delivery trucks.

Very few obey the posted 25 miles per hour speed limit. The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, prescribes the width of a rural, local road to be between 18 and 24 feet.

The width of Silver Bay Road in front of my home is 14 feet, ostensibly making it a one lane road.

The road is dangerously narrow, heavily traveled, particularly as of late, and soon to be fi lled with walkers both from this neighborhood and from the Silver Bay Inn. Especially hazardous is the blind curve in front of the Penfield Cottage.

Whoever has jurisdiction over this road needs to assess the problem and consider remedies, such as reducing the speed limit, or better yet installing a series of speed bumps, or I fear a serious accident looms on the horizon.

Bernadette Speach, former director of the Tannery Pond Community Center, has known Wilson since 2013, when he worked at the center as an intern.

Speach recalled Wilson as trustworthy of all projects, whether greeting patrons at the door or going through the center’s archives.

“Mike learned all about the technology in the booth, then taught me something.”

Chestertown Troop 30 Scoutmaster Joe Klewicki said Wilson is now prepared for “everything” in his life because of his scouting experience.

Wilson pinned a medal on his father and mother and honored Briggs with a mentor pin.

“From the torture of hiking 20 miles over two days to completing the Eagle project, it’s been worth it,” Wilson said.

Troop 30 also recognized younger Boy Scouts for advancing in rank and earning numerous merit badges. ■

Aerial fire truck purchase postponed

LAKE GEORGE | The purchase of a new aerial firetruck — promoted for nine months by Lake George Village Fire Department off icials — has now been shelved following an informal agreement between the agency’s officers and village Mayor Robert Blais.

Lake George Village Board members heard from Blais May 30 that the fire department officers were willing to hold off for two years on their campaign for a new firetruck — likely to cost between $900,000 and $1.2 million — if the existing aerial truck was repaired.

The village’s 1995 Sutphen aerial firetruck broke down recently on its way to a fi re call in Bolton — its engine spewed oil and antifreeze on the pavement — prompting renewed requests for its replacement.

Blais said that he asked the former chief mechanic of the Albany Fire

Department to inspect the village’s existing aerial truck — and he also talked with representatives of the repair facility — Stewart & Stevenson of Latham.

They all told Blais that the truck’s diesel engine merely blew a seal and should be repaired, rather than replacing the motor or purchasing a new truck at this point, the mayor said.

The former Albany Fire Department mechanic praised the truck’s condition, Blais told the village board.

“He said our truck is in excellent condition, adding that after the motor is repaired, it will be as good as any fi re truck that Albany now owns,” Blais said.

The mechanic scrutinized the extensive repairs that were made last year to the ladder turntable, one of the vehicle’s pumps, and said the repair work was outstanding, Blais reported. He also said that he conferred with town board members, and they predicted that their board would likely defeat a purchase

Stony Creek Inn will host annual fundraiser

STONY CREEK| The Dot & Johnstock Annual Fundraiser will be held Saturday, June 16 from 1.pm. to 5 p.m. at the Stony Creek Inn to benefit Cindy’s Cancer Retreats and the Southern Adirondack Musicians Fund (SAM). The original Dot & Johnstock in 2008 raised funds and hope for Stony Creek Inn owners Dot Bartell and John Fickel when beginning their cancer journey. Since then, that same spirit and community outpouring has benefited Cindy’s Cancer Retreats and the SAM fund.

Cindy’s Retreat, developed by the late Cindy Ginsburg, provides physical, emotional and spiritual healing for women and men living with, and beyond, cancer with weekend long programs at Silver Bay on Lake George. The Southern Adirondack Musicians Fund (SAM Fund) provides emergency funds to local and regional musicians and their families facing hardships to see them through difficult times.

There will be a variety of food and musical offerings with a lineup that is still evolving. The afternoon will also include

proposal, based on its impact on taxes and public opposition.

Blais also said that the money that the village was annually setting aside for vehicle purchase would exceed any inflation, over the next two years, in the cost of a new aerial truck.

Stewart & Stevenson submitted a quote of $18,800 to the village recently for repairing the firetruck’s engine.

Hearing the news from Blais, the village board approved a resolution to pay up to $20,000 to Stewart & Stevenson for repairs, and to hold off on purchasing a new aerial truck for two years.

Blais said the 1995 Sutphen would likely be back in service by mid-June.

Monday, village Fire Chief Scott Smith confirmed that the fire department officers agreed to the postponement.

Lyme disease is growing, but you can protect yourself

As the seasons and days change from cold to warm, New Englanders are eager to get outside and enjoy the mountains, beaches, lakes and camping that makes up our well-rounded landscape.

Unfortunately, another season has begun as well — tick season.

Although the last thing anyone wants to think about when finally getting outside to enjoy the summer weather is menacing ticks, it’s important to educate yourself and your loved ones about tick prevention and treatment.

Ticks are more active in spring, summer and fall but can be around any time the temperature is above freezing. Each year thousands of cases of Lyme disease are reported in each of the three northern New England states.

As a matter of fact, Vermont and Maine have the highest rates of Lyme disease compared with any other state, while New Hampshire ranks in the top ten.

Typical symptoms of Lyme disease include a rash, fever, joint pain and fatigue. Lyme disease is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi when it is transmitted to humans through the bite from an infected deer tick. This can occur from the bite of an adult or baby (nymph) deer tick.

Due to its small size, the deer tick can often be missed during a tick check. However, if you do find one, check to see if there is a circular black spot, known as the shield, above the mouthparts.

The shield does not change as the tick engorges and is one of the key factors in identifying the deer tick.

The nymph deer tick is very small, about the size of the period at the end of this sentence. As the nymph’s mature into adult ticks, they are still small measuring about a fifth of an inch.

Before heading outdoors to enjoy the weather, take steps to protect yourself from these small but harmful parasites. If possible, wear long pants and tuck them into your shoes, which makes it harder for the ticks to find their way onto your skin. Spray your pant legs and shoes with Permethrin or another tick spray to keep them away. Using a tick spray such as YAYA Organic Tick Ban or Deet on any exposed skin will help prevent them from attaching.

After coming inside from the outdoors, check yourself and others, such as children, dogs and elders, for ticks. Our furry friends tend to be tick highways at no fault of their own.

Removing ticks before they become attached is always the best way to prevent Lyme disease. If a tick does become embedded there are many ways to try and remove them.

Here are the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC)

recommendations: • Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin’s surface as possible.

• Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don’t twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the mouthparts to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove the mouth-parts with tweezers. If you are unable to remove the mouth easily with clean tweezers, leave it alone and let the skin heal.

• After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water.

• Never crush a tick with your fingers. Dispose of a live tick by putting it in alcohol, placing it in a sealed bag/container, wrapping it tightly in tape or flushing it down the toilet.

It’s important to perform regular checks and promptly remove attached ticks. If you’ve been bitten, closely monitor your health for possible signs and symptoms of Lyme disease. Antibiotics are available and most effective when begun early.

Gardening refers to providing assistance, ranging from technical assistance to peer support, in developing local entrepreneurs who will start businesses in Chestertown and the North Warren region.

“How high do you want to go?” asked Al Tolomeo of the Carol Theater. “Do you want a 150-room hotel?”

“No, we’re talking about a homegrown economy,” Leggett said.

The idea of a creative economy, which was also discussed at the chamber’s general meeting earlier in the day, expanded the notion of “creative” businesses to include any business producing goods and services.

Leggett said three businesses started up in Chestertown recently, including a hair salon, dog grooming business and a framing shop. Leggett said the notion envisioned a sole proprietor making the business succeed based on his or her particular skills.

“Maybe we should change the name (of the committee) to ‘Homegrown Economy’,” Eves said.

The committee’s second main focus of discussion was on efforts to recruit outside businesses to Chestertown.

Tolomeo said when he is a patron of businesses in other communities in the region, he will sometimes ask them if they would every consider opening a Chestertown branch.

The most common answer was no, because

there were not enough potential customers in Chestertown, he recalled.

Discussion evolved into finding out why people settle in Chestertown, and filling in gaps when needed businesses close, including in the skilled trades areas.

“We need to look at retaining some businesses,” said Chester resident Wayne Thomas, who said there is currently no locksmith in the area.

The matter of having no one to assist or replace retiring plumbers, painters and electricians, for example, has been discussed in Chestertown over the past year.

Questions about keeping younger residents living and working in Chestertown was a subject discussed during last year’s campaign season.

Recruiting young people into the skilled trades has been the subject of two recruitment programs held at the North Warren Central School sponsored by the Chestertown Rotary Club.

The Creative/Homegrown Economy action committee will meet again on Tuesday, July 3.

Meetings will continue on the first Wednesday of the month. A Housing action committee meeting will be held Wednesday, June 13; the Town Aesthetics housing committee will meet Wednesday, June 20, and the “Showcasing our People” action committee will meet Wednesday, June 27.

Scientific evidence is mounting on the impacts of road salt on Adirondack lakes and watersheds.

New York State is the largest user of road salt in North America. More than 6 million tons have been deposited on Adirondack roads over the past 35 years, according to the Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute.

Much of the substance ends up in ground and surface water due to the thin and porous nature of local soil.

Levels in Lake George have increased threefold in the past four decades, while in Lake Placid, he Ausable River Association has determined there are “significant long-term trends” of increasing sodium and chloride buildup in Mirror Lake, with concentrations up to 11 times higher than in the early 1970s.

“We have been working closely with researchers, local politicians and our partners to advocate for a reduction in road salt for nearly a decade and we’ve learned that a full slate of best management practices is required if we are going to reverse the trend of salt loading in our precious water resources,” said Brittany Christenson, executive director of AdkAction, in a statement.

‘CONSTRUCTIVE AND CONTROLLED’

State agencies are also reviewing data included in a study from the Adirondack Watershed Institute about salt in drinking water wells.

According to AdkAction, 55 percent of the 400 wells tested that were downslope from state-maintained roads were contaminated with sodium and/or chloride at levels exceeding federal guidelines.

Stakeholders were quick to connect the dots, and lamented the impact on their homes and health.

“The contamination of our well with road salt has cost us thousands of dollars in ruined appliances and corroded pipes,” said Kirk Peterson, a well study participant, in a statement. “We can’t operate a dishwasher and have to replace faucets and other plumbing fixtures regularly because of corrosion caused by the salt.”

Peterson said he’s also had to replace most of his home’s copper pipes and has resorted to buying water to drink over health concerns.

“And now we worry about being unable to sell our house,” he said. “We will hold the state fully responsible for these problems.”

State agencies said they are monitoring the issue, and the state Department of Health is offering free confirmatory

Girl’s all-state hoopsters named

ELIZABETHTOWN | Fourteen high school athletes were named to the Class B, C and D all-state teams in girl’s basketball for the 2017-18 season.

Moriah’s McKenzie Sprague was honored as a second team all star in Class D, the highest honor given to a Section VII player.

Teammate Madison Olcott followed as a member of the third team in Class D. Also in Class D, Hannah Schwoebel of Westport was named to the fifth team, while the Bolton duo of Maddie Pratt and Katelyn Van Auken were each named to the seventh team.

Westport’s Ellie Storey and Moriah’s Makayla Stockwell were named as honorable mention.

State announces Scholar-Athlete teams

ELIZABETHTOWN | A total of 48 Section VII teams were named Scholar-Athlete teams by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA).

Saranac led all Section VII schools with seven Scholar-Athlete teams, while Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Plattsburgh High and

Northeastern Clinton each had five teams earning the honor.

Beekmantown of AuSable Valley finished with four, while Ticonderoga and Peru had three, with the Elizabethtown-Lewis/Keene/ Moriah/Westport track and field teams both being honored.

Former vice-principal has 13 years in the district

CHESTERTOWN | The entire time Caleb Martin has been a teacher at the North Warren Central School (NWCS), he has felt like he walked the line between being a teacher and administrator.

The school board recently made it official when it voted to appoint Martin as secondary principal beginning in September.

The appointment came with a four-year contract with a starting salary of $88,000. Martin will be responsible for about 236 students in grades 7-12.

Martin will replace Theresa Andrew, who has been principal through Martin’s entire tenure as a NWCS teacher, but will retire at the end of the school year.

Martin, 43, has been at NWCS since being hired as an alternative classroom teacher in 2005.

Andrew started at the school in 1985 was appointed secondary principal in 2003. Andrew also served as the K-12 principal for a time. Martin said Andrew was a role model as administrator.

“She always had my back, professionally and personally,” he said.

DAY ONE OF TEACHING AT NWCS

About a month before the 2005-2006 school year began, Martin saw an ad for an alternative classroom teaching position at NWCS. Superintendent Joe Murphy asked him to come in for an interview on the first day of school, and he was hired.

“The job sort of morphed into the role of high school disciplinarian without the title,” Martin said.

Martin picked up various other duties during his 13 years at NWCS, including that of a school data coordinator, chairman of the Committee on Special Education, and three years into his time at NWCS he was named vice-principal.

The title, he said, is given to someone on a teaching contract with an additional stipend.

As time went on the school was having fewer and fewer discipline problems.

Asked why, Martin said he likes to believe it was because

he got a reputation for being both fair and consistent in dispensing discipline.

“At one time they talked about making me dean of students,” Martin said.

YANKEES NEVER CALLED

Martin, who is a huge baseball fan, said he realized early in high school that he wasn’t going to be drafted by the Yankees. He grew up in Thurman, graduated from Warrensburg Central School, and went on to attend North Country Community College in Saranac Lake. He attended Sienna College for the next two years, earning a bachelor’s degree in history. He attended the College of Saint Rose in Albany and earned certification in elementary education.

“I thought I was going to be a first grade teacher. I did my student teaching in first grade and I loved it,” Martin said.

However, Martin ended up being certified to teach Social Studies for grades 7-12.

His first teaching job was at the Indian Lake School, where he stayed three years teaching English Language Arts and Social Studies. He left teaching for a year before seeing the ad and being hired at NWCS. NWCS Superintendent Michelle French said the school was lucky to have Martin.

“Caleb has a tremendous knowledge of our climate, culture, community and is well respected by all,” she said in an email. “I believe in supporting, cultivating and promoting those members of the staff that show in all they do daily their potential. Caleb will be an outstanding addition to our administrative team.” ■

State commits $343K to Lake George for sewer upgrades State’s delinquent sewer bills still in negotiation

LAKE GEORGE | Aiming to keep the waters of Lake George clean, the state has granted the Town of Lake George $343,000 to upgrade Caldwell Sewer District infrastructure along the east shore of Lake George.

The grant is to pay toward expenses of repairing and replacing aging sewer lines, manholes and other sanitary sewer installations, particularly in the vicinity of East Brook near Million Dollar Beach.

The beach was closed down intermittently during the past two summers due to high E. coli levels after water tests at the state-

owned venue indicated that bacterial contamination exceeded state-mandated limits.

The following extensive investigations conducted by various state and county agencies, local environmental group staffers and town employees revealed that East Brook — which flows into Lake George — was a major source of the bacterial contamination.

Much of the problem was resolved when workmen found and replaced a section of hardened-clay sewer pipe with holes on either side which had been emitting raw sewage into groundwater near East Brook.

The section of pipe, about 10 inches in diameter, had a natural gas pipe running perpendicular through it — apparently pierced by the gas line inadvertently by National Grid workers several years ago while they were installing it under the road with a horizontal pile driver.

Lake George Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson said last month that the $343,000 would be spent on replacing some other lengths of aging sewer line, including several locations where

lengths of pipe are misaligned and are leaking.

The money will also go toward replacing or relining two manholes.

The two pump stations in that vicinity both need to be rebuilt, but the $343,000 grant is insufficient to cover the expenses of this latter project, he said, noting the town’s intention to apply for an additional grant.

“We’ll be taking care of the most urgent upgrades first,” he said, adding that if there’s money left over, the sewer line on Front Street will also be repaired.

Lake George Town Planning Director Dan Barusch and engineers at Chazen Co. worked together on the successful grant application.

Dickinson said that the town, through last year’s collaborative investigation and partial remedy of the contamination problem, has developed a close working relationship with state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officials and the governor’s office.

“They are concerned about the purity of

the lake as much as we are,” he said. “The state appreciated our willingness and ability to make progress in resolving the situation.”

STATE HASN’T PAID TOWN SEWER CHARGES SINCE 1997

The responsibility of addressing the lake contamination has involved complex negotiations, Dickinson said, noting that the state has not paid a sewer bill to the town for the last 20 years, despite receiving many bills since Dickinson has been in office.

Apparently a town administration years ago neglected to bill the state for the sewage discharged from the Lake George Battleground State Campground as well as Million Dollar Beach bathhouses.

“We’ve had open, progressive talks recently, and we will hopefully resolve this complex situation before the end of the year,” Dickinson said, noting that the issue of overdue sewer bills involves how the state is now classifying the land and facilities they own. ■

Beebe plans to attend Purdue University, where he will major in industrial engineering.

The salutatorian is Zoe Gavin, daughter of Priscilla and Thomas Gavin of Diamond Point, who plans to attend Niagara University and major in biology.

George, will attend Hamilton College in the fall to explore music, neuroscience and environmental science. She plans to then accept the transfer option extended to her and attend Cornell University.

Davey is a longtime dancer at the Reality Dance Studio.

She’s an active member in the Warrensburg Drama Club, won the Best Supporting Actress award last year and was nominated for Best Actress this year by the Proctors High School Musical Theater Awards.

She’s also captain of the Warrensburg Band Flag Team.

The Class of 2018 salutatorian is Nicholas Putney, son of Gregory and Denise Putney of Warrensburg. He plans to attend SUNY Plattsburgh in the fall to study nutritional science.

Putney was a varsity tennis player, a member of the chess club and worked on the sound crew for the Warrensburg

McNeill has been active in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation, where she currently serves as the alumni president.

She is the president of Junior State of America and a varsity cross country and spring track athlete.

Elizabeth Bonk is the daughter of Catherine Sinkora of Warrensburg.

Brouthers, Monthony top Indian Lake Class of 2018 INDIAN LAKE | Molly Brouthers has been named valedictorian for the Indian Lake Central School (ILCS) Class of 2018.

She plans on attending SUNY Adirondack in the fall to pursue nursing.

Brouthers is involved in both the community and in school activities. She is a member of the Junior Ambulance Corp, Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary and she is a member of the National Honor Society.

In school she was a member of the Post Star Bowl, Travel Club, ILCS Flags, prom committee, varsity soccer, varsity basketball and attendee at the BOCES Leadership Conference and Big Buddies.

As a senior, Brouthers participated in a work study program.

She spent half her days in school and the other half at an internship site at a local physical therapy office. Brouthers’ time in the physical therapy office became a hands-on learning experience for her. Brouthers got to see first hand if the health field was a good career choice for her, which it proved to be.

Brouthers is also an avid dirt bike racer. Brouthers is absolutely dedicated to the sport. She travels all over the northeast and beyond to compete. She has won several of her races and is truly passionate about the sport.

Rachel Monthony was named salutatorian of the class of 2018. She plans to attend SUNY Cobleskill in the Equine Studies program.

program. She served as a big buddy to an elementary student for the past three years. Her other activities include Travel

Club, Drama Club and yearbook. She had a lead role in the 2016 spring musical, “Annie.”

She is a volunteer at the Red Cross Blood Drive, has participated in various roadside clean-ups and in the “St. Patrick’s Day Dance,” a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Monthony also participated in a work study program. Four days a week, after taking courses at school, Monthony went to the Kit in Kin Ranch, where she worked on all aspects of life at the ranch from the retail store to barn maintenance and horse care. Monthony is turning her passion for horses into a career. ■ Commencement will be held June 23 at 12 p.m. in the Indian Lake School

Students top Lake George Class of 2018

LAKE GEORGE | Eight students have been named to the honor group at Lake George Junior-Senior High School for placing in the top 10 percent of the class.

Antonio James Abrantes, son of Antonio and Sarah Abrantes, is currently enrolled in the New Visions Engineering Program. This fall he will attend Clarkson University to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

Abrantes is a member of the National Senior Honor Society, National Business Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. He’s been a three-sport athlete since 9th grade,

playing football, baseball and golf. He was captain of the baseball team and captain of the VEX Robotics Team last year. He is a member of the VEX Robotics Club, which qualified for the state competition two years in a row and the world competition in Kentucky.

Abrantes performed community service for Lake George Youth Commission, Up Yonda Farms and the Lake George Elementary School.

Jude Armstrong, son of Stephen and Karen Armstrong, is currently enrolled in the New Visions Engineering Program. He plans to attend Clarkson University to obtain a degree

in mechanical engineering.

Armstrong participated in several advanced placement (AP) classes throughout his high school career, including AP calculus and AP physics this school year. Armstrong is an active member of Spanish Honor Society, Business Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society and Senior National Honor Society. He held officer positions for Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), including reporter and co-president.

Armstrong attended two state leadership conferences for FBLA, and was awarded fourth place for electronic career portfolio, which qualified

him for the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California. Armstrong is also a member of the VEX Robotics Club, which qualified for the state competition two years in a row and the World Competition in Kentucky.

He has been a member of the golf team for his entire high school career and was captain of the team this past fall. He also received scholar athlete recognition in The Chronicle.

Johnsburg Top 10 unveiled

JOHNSBURG | Seamus B. Tomb was named valedictorian for the Johnsburg Central School Class of 2018.

Tomb is graduating with an advanced Regents diploma with honors mastery in math and master in science.

Later this month, Tomb will be inducted into the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland where he will pursue a major in cyber operations.

When he was in fifth grade, his father received a Fulbright Teacher Exchange Scholarship to teach in India. Tomb and his triplet brothers, Casey and Brendan, moved to Ahmedabed, Gujarat, India with their parents for six months.Tomb and his brothers attended Ahmedabed International School where faculty and students are from various countries.

During high school, Tomb was a member of the mathletes team, National Honor Society, and Natural Helpers, a peer mentoring group. He played for Empire City Soccer Academy, Foothills Rangers Rugby team, is proficient in Brazilian JiuJitsu and is an Adirondack 46er. For two consecutive years, he was a dual sport athlete in Johnsburg-North Warren SMALL ENGINE REPAIR the Cross Country running team and captain of the Johnsburg Varsity Soccer Team.

Tomb was named to the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference’s First Team All-Stars Soccer Team. He was named to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Section 2 Adirondack League All Star team for cross country running.

As captain on the Johnsburg Nordic team, he represented Section 2 Nordic at the state championships, as well as, representing New York state at New England Nordic Ski Association’s (NENSA) Eastern High School Nordic Skiing Championships. He was selected to the Mid Atlantic Junior National Cross Country Skiing team and competed in the 2016 United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) Cross Country Skiing Junior National Championships.

In April of his junior year, Tomb flew to Spain and France to tour the Basque Region with the Johnsburg Central School (JCS) Foreign Language Club. At the JCS annual Honors Night Award Ceremony, Tomb received the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Innovation and Creativity Award, Villanova College Book Award, Harvard Prize Book Award, and the Alfred University Engineering Award.

He was selected for American Legion Boys State and in June 2017 attended the program at Morrisville State College.

In the summer of 2017, he was selected and attended the Summer Seminar at the United States Naval Academy.

During his senior year, Tomb represented Section 2 Nordic at the State Championships. He was one of three skier relay teams that placed second. He was selected to the Mid-Atlantic Junior National Cross Country Skiing team. He also competed in the USSA Cross Country Skiing Junior National Championships at Soldiers Hollow, Utah. In March, Tomb was chosen for the Teen Excellence Award which was

Brendan hiked along the border of Nepal and India soaking up the cultural differences and learning different methods of the merchants along the way.

Brendan is a member of the National Honor Society, vice president of the Jazz Band, mathlete, and received a Scholarship J, an award given to students for receiving an 85 and above in all of their classes.

Brendan was a member of the varsity soccer, varsity cross country running and varsity Nordic teams. He has participated in the New York State Nordic Ski Team for Eastern High Schools for NENSA. As co-captain of the varsity cross country team, he led his team to win the league championships as well as sectional championships.

He played for the Empire City Soccer Academy, Eagle Impact Rugby Academy and earned rookie player of the year and New York State RCT Upstate/Western All-Star for the Foothill Rangers Rugby team. This year, Brendan was chosen to participate in the USA Rugby All-American Winter Camp.

He is an Adirondack 46er and is proficient in Jiu-Jitsu.

In his junior year, Brendan earned the Clarkson University Leadership Award, the Saint Michael’s College Book Award and the Rensselaer Medal Award from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Brendan was awarded academic achievements in Regents chemistry and Regents physics. During spring break, Brendan flew to Spain and France with the JCS Foreign Language Club to tour the Basque Region and immerse himself in the culture by staying with the locals. » Lake George Cont. from pg. 24 Brandon William Bondy, son of Linda Bondy and the late Robert Bondy, is currently enrolled in New Visions Engineering. In the fall, Bondy will attend Clarkson University to study civil engineering.

Bondy is an active member in many clubs and honor societies including Senior National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Business Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, VEX Robotics, Spanish Club and Varsity Club.

Bondy was the vice president and co-president of FBLA, as well as a two time national qualifier. In his freshman year, Bondy qualified for the Chicago conference in personal finance and in his junior year he qualified for the Anaheim conference in computer applications. On the VEX Robotics Team, Bondy was a driver of the robot that qualified for the world competition in Louisville, Kentucky.

Throughout his high school career, Bondy played varsity soccer and varsity baseball.

Bondy was a captain of the soccer team that won the Adirondack League Championship this past fall. Bondy is a three-time New York State Public High School Athletic Association scholar athlete and was selected as scholar athlete in The Chronicle newspaper.

Cameron Moran Hood, son of Monica Moran of Queensbury and James Hood of Glens Falls, is currently enrolled in the New Visions Health Careers Exploration program. Hood was awarded a Presidential Academic Scholarship and will attend the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in the fall. He plans to major in biology on a pre-medical track.

Hood is a National Merit Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar. He has been a starting member of the Academic Quiz Bowl Team since eighth grade and captain junior and senior year. This year, the team won The Post Star Academic Quiz Bowl Tournament and qualified for nationals in Washington, D.C. Hood is vice president of the Senior National Honor Society and president of the astronomy club. He is a member of the varsity cross country and varsity Nordic skiing teams, and participated in track and field, soccer and golf in the past.

Hood played the trombone in the school band since elementary school and was a member of the Jazz Band for five years. He participated in the Northeast Instrumental Music Festival, All-County Band, and New York State School Music Association. For two summers, Hood worked as a drummer in the Fife and Drum Corps at Fort William Henry. Last summer, he worked for the Town of Lake George as a lifeguard.

Kirsten Megan Martindale, daughter of Francis Martindale, Jr. and Carol Martindale of Queensbury, is currently enrolled in the Clean Technologies and Sustainable Industries Early College High School program in Malta, in which she takes college-level classes focused on computer science. She plans to continue her education in computer science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the fall.

Martindale served as secretary of the Student Council, class treasurer during sophomore and junior years, and on the Anti-Bullying Committee.

Martindale is a member of the National Senior Honor Society and the Academic Quiz Bowl Team, which won The Post Star Academic Quiz Bowl Tournament and qualified for Nationals in Washington, D.C. She was captain of the Lake George VEX Robotics Team, which won the New York state Championship and qualified for the world competition in Kentucky. She participated in many prestigious summer science camps, including the ExxonMobil summer science camp at RPI, the Horizons science camp for girls at Clarkson University, and the Long Island University Honor Institute’s robotics camp. She was also a captain of the varsity cross-country team, a member of the varsity track and field team, and a member of the cheer team. She was featured as a scholarathlete in The Chronicle. During the summer, Martindale is a supervisor in the ticket office of the Lake George Steamboat Company.

Shannon Marie Mulcahy, daughter of Kevin and Lynn Mulcahy, will be attending the University of Rochester to major in neuroscience and minor in Spanish.

Mulcahyis a member of the National Senior Honor Society, president of the Spanish Honor Society and co-treasurer of the class of 2018.

This summer will mark her third year as a lifeguard at Water Slide World.

Daniel Sause, son of Francis and Marion Sause, will attend Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall where he will major in computational information technology and participate in the Naval ROTC program.

Sause is a member of National Senior Honor Society, co-treasurer of the senior class government, treasurer of astronomy club, and president of the VEX Robotics Team. Morgan Elizabeth Zilm, the daughter of Michael and Kimberly Zilm, is currently enrolled in the New Visions Engineering program. She will attend Clarkson University to study mechanical engineering.

Zilm is a member of the Lake George Varsity Club, Senior National Honor Society, National French Honor Society, French Club and National Technical Honor Society. Zilm was part of the Captain’s Leadership Council and Natural Helpers. She earned a spot on the principal’s list every quarter since 7th grade.

Throughout high school, Zilm has been a member of Lake George’s varsity soccer, basketball and softball teams. She was named the scholar athlete of the week in The Chronicle newspaper and was a member of several scholar athlete teams. In addition to her involvement in athletics, Zilm was a member of the highly successful Lake George VEX Robotics team for two years. Zilm received the RIT Innovation and Creativity Award and the Clarkson University Leadership Award.
