Law Enforcement Weekend in Lake George to feature new public events

LAKE GEORGE | This weekend, dozens of police and other law officers will be enjoying camaraderie and relaxation as the third annual Law Enforcement Officers Weekend is held in Lake George Village.

New this year are a variety of events to which the public is invited.

The convention of officers, set for Friday, June 14 through Sunday, June 16, includes fellowship, friendly competitions, cruises and other family-oriented activities, as well as seminars on police-related topics.

This retreat for law enforcement officers is not only intended to provide downtime for police and corrections personnel, but it will also offer respite for five families of police officers — from around the U.S. — who were killed in the line of duty. Additionally, another family of a police officer whose daughter is enduring a rare medical affliction will also be participating. These six families are attending with expenses paid by Law Enforcement Weekend, a non-profit organization, in conjunction with the New York City Chapter of Brotherhood of the Fallen. » LEO weekend Cont. on pg. 2

Changes, charity were elements of Americade 2019’s success

LAKE GEORGE | As in its prior years, the 37th annual Americade which concluded last weekend featured many thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts enjoying the camaraderie, two-wheeled tours, musical entertainment,

and the huge expo of motorcycle equipment that the famous rally is renowned for.

But in talking about the week-long gathering after it ended, Americade CEO Christian Dutcher focused on the rally’s several favorable new elements, as well as the charitable inclinations of its attendees.

The most prominent change for 2019 was

the relocation of Americade’s Block Party, a phenomenon in its 2018 debut, but a misfire with locals due to the traffic rerouting. This year’s new site for the party — atop the pavement of Beach Road — kept traffic flowing, while people enjoyed its proximity to the lake, according to reviews on Facebook.

BRANT LAKE | The town of Horicon is going to follow in the footsteps of Los Angeles and Austin as it seeks to spice up its tourism with a brand-new attraction.

The local government is launching their “Food Truck Fridays on the Pond” fest, to be held weekly from June 28 through Aug. 30 in the hamlet of Brant Lake.

Ten food trucks have signed up to provide a variety of edibles on a rotating basis over the 10 consecutive weeks, with about five of them featured each Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Horicon Town Hall parking lot.

Scheduled for the opening night are two Horiconbased vendors of free-wheeling food: Red Wagon Barbecue — featuring smoked meats, salads and sandwiches — and Chilly Willy’s ice cream. Also signed up for this summer are vendors of tacos, pizza, mac and cheese, as well as specialty beverages — and several of these may also be present for opening night June 28.

Food Truck Fridays, to be situated a stone’s throw from the Mill Pond are to feature live music provided by regional bands, games, plus booths sponsored by area businesses and organizations.

Public events for the weekend include a parade of vintage police cars starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday on Beach Road and heading northwest on Canada Street to Shepard Park. U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik is scheduled to give a speech at the retreat’s opening ceremony at 5 p.m. in the park’s amphitheater. The event is to feature a memorial service for fallen officers, as well as raffles, bounce houses, a food truck and other vendors.

Immediately following will be a concert featuring Kristen Capolino followed by Better Off Led, a Led Zeppelin tribute band. Beer and wine vendors will be on site — and dogs and children are welcome.

On Saturday, the vintage police cars will be on display from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the lawn of the Fort William Henry Resort. The public is also invited to enjoy a wine and bingo event from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday upstairs at King Neptune’s Pub. In this event, participants vie for designer purses, custom jewelry and tactical equipment. This adults-only activity, which features an open wine bar, bears a $20 entry fee.

From 5 pm. to 6 p.m. Saturday, a police-dog demonstration will be presented behind Fort William Henry Hotel.

From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, a comedy show and “tap takeover” is to be held at King Neptune’s Pub featuring comedians Kevin Downey Jr. and Eric Potts This fundraiser, featuring hors d’oeuvres, raffles and live music, bears a $45 admission charge. The doors open at 6:30 p.m..

“Best Americade in a decade,” motorcyclist Kevin Keil wrote in a Facebook post. Similar reviews said “We had a blast,” “...Loved the new block party location,” “What a great week,” and “You stepped up your game — it was the best Americade in years and years.”

About 1,300 people were drawn to the hear a lineup of bands play on both Friday and Saturday nights, Dutcher estimated.

“Local shop owners said they were busier last weekend than in prior years,” he said.

Other highlights of Americade 2019 included a motorcyclist proposing marriage to his girlfriend at the rally’s opening celebration on the grounds of Fort William Henry Hotel, with Lake George ion the background. The man had tipped Dutcher off about his intentions, and Dutcher called him up on stage.

“He got down on one knee and proposed to her, and the bride-to be cried and said ‘Yes,’ and the crowd went nuts,” Dutcher said.

The prospective groom appeared to be under 20, Dutcher said, noting that for several years he’s made efforts to attract younger people to the rally with the intent of maintaining its lively “vibe.” These efforts have apparently

The serious side of LEO Weekend includes various seminars for police officers, including strategic responses to incidents involving homemade explosives, suicide awareness and intervention, and a review of emotional issues faced by law officers.

“The guy rode in on a 1982 Yamaha and rode out on a brand-new Indian motorcycle,” Dutcher said.

The charitable element of the rally was particularly prominent in this year’s Americade, he continued.

The rally’s annual Ride for Kids kids parade, which raises money for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, garnered $18,800 this year. Another sum of nearly $3,000 was collected and donated to the Gary Sinise Foundation, a charity benefiting U.S. veterans.

In addition, Americade hosted a record number of veterans in recovery, to provide them with some renewal and relaxation. This effort, a partnership with the Wounded Warrior Project, has attracted more and more participants each year recently.

An email Dutcher received from a person who coordinates the effort on behalf of the veterans, said that the four days the veterans had enjoyed at Americade were “priceless.” The email continued, “I can’t thank you guys enough, and I’m looking forward to Americade 2020.” ■

During this service, WCS students, alumni, and community members also shared their thoughts about the revered teacher and friend.

Kayla Sweet, a 2016 graduate of WCS and now a student at Siena College, looked out over the crowd that gathered for the ceremony. Kayla had given the keynote speech at the school’s honor society induction ceremony — at Io Bruce’s request — just four days before her passing.

“Io’s ability to connect with everybody, regardless of what they were going through, was amazing —she just loved everyone,” Sweet said, noting they texted each other

often. “She encouraged people to be an unapologetic version of themselves.”

1983 Warrensburg High School graduate Amy Combs-Baker, a classmate and close friend of Io since elementary school, shared her thoughts.

“Io genuinely cared about people,” Amy Combs said, noting that both Io and her husband Matt Bruce, also a local teacher, enriched the lives of hundreds of students. Io, she said, reached out to students, lifting their spirits in both good times or tough circumstances — mentoring them, if needed, through emotional turmoil or personal challenges. “She gave all the kids hope — she really was a light to all of them.”

Warrensburg Elementary Principal Amy Langworthy also talked of Io Bruce’s attributes.

“She’s was one of the best educators we’ve had in Warrensburg. For many years to come,

her impact will be felt by all of us — and I’m sure that all of her insight will be used by the many students whose lives she touched,” Langworthy said. “She was truly vested in the school and our community, and having every kid be successful in whatever they pursued.”

Io’s mother Greta tearfully talked about the events of her last four or so days visiting Io — hiking Hackensack Mountain, shopping for clothes, preparing a family dinner.

She then looked at all the solemn faces lit up with flickering candlelight.

“You were all such an important part of Io’s life,” Greta said. “She just loved you all so much.”

Matt Bruce listened to people talk about how Io had encouraged them to achieve high goals and had inspired them with her everpresent cheerful demeanor.

After people extinguished their candles, he looked around at the crowd and offered his thoughts.

“You are wonderful people,” he said, thanking them for their support. “I love all of you.”

Baylee Smith, a 2016 graduate of Warrensburg, was a student in several classes taught by Io. Smith said that Io had years ago helped her over a summer break to prepare for Regents’ tests that she had struggled with the year before. Smith is now a teacher’s assistant at Prospect Center.

“Io was always reaching out to help students when they needed it — she was like a second mom to everyone, said Smith, who organized the memorial service. “Io was loved by so many people that I thought the town should come together and show how much she meant to all of us.” ■

FLW Tour returns, boosts local economy Fishing competition gives back to environment and community

PLATTSBURGH | The Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) 2019 Tour presented by T-H Marine will come to a close at the Lake Champlain finale, which will reel in anglers, economic and environmental impacts and big fish to Clinton County June 27 to 30 at the Plattsburgh City Marina.

Last held in 2016, the event to end the six-lake tour is returning to Plattsburgh hoping to appreciate the local environment and give a boost to the local lake-shore economy.

According to the Adirondack Coast 2017 economic-impact study of Adirondack Coast Bass Fishing Tournaments, responders stayed an average 4.93 nights during each stay

with an average daily spending total of $250.48, 75 percent of which used commercial lodging facilities.

The tour participants supported 41.3 full-time jobs, mainly within the food service and lodging industry in Clinton County and contributed a total of approximately $3,291,710 to the regional economy.

FLW Communications Specialist Brian Johnson said the event is expected to bring about $1.9 million to the area, and gives anglers and FLW staff a way to give back to the local community.

“We’re always gracious to be invited into communities,” Johnson said. “We’re coming in, using resources, and we’re fishing waters that belong to the city and people there. We want to give back in any way possible.”

CASTING AND CONSERVATION

Through a partnership with the Lake Champlain Sea Grant (LCSG) program, the FLW makes sure that there are resources in place for participants to be environmentally conscious. The main goals are to fight against invasive species and make sure the lake’s bass population remains healthy.

Boat-washing stations, educational boards at registrations and

livewells, which help keep the fish cool, oxygenated and stress-free when finally released back into the water, are some of the systems the FLW has in place currently. Johnson said the FLW also works with local authorities to make sure everything is up to date.

“Conservation is the name of the game,” Johnson said.

“We want to keep those fish healthy and in the best condition possible. We want to treat these fisheries with the utmost care, and have a low impact on them.”

REELING IN RESULTS

Registration is June 26 at the Crete Memorial Civic Center from 11:30 to 1 p.m. Take-off is at 6:30 a.m. every morning; weigh-in is from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. the first two days and 4 to 8 p.m. the last two days.

The family-friendly Outdoor Expo is every day at 2 p.m. The expo allows community members to come out and enjoy food, giveaways and opportunities to meet and interact with professional anglers. Johnson said 2016 winner Scott Martin will be returning to the water this year, in the hopes of going “back-to-back.”

“Bring your coolers and your lawn chairs, and come out and enjoy the day with us,” Johnson said. ■

On June 2, 2019, Marian Morey celebrated her 100th birthday with about 100 family members and friends at Mollie’s Mason Jar & 9 North Wood Fired Pizza in Hadley. She looked marvelous and thoroughly enjoyed being feted by so many people who love her. The band (the Desperados) was terrific, the line dancing was lively and entertaining, and the food and service provided to the many guests were great in every respect. Marian’s nephew, Mac Morey, served as the official photographer, taking dozens of pictures to capture the fun and excitement.

Born on June 2, 1919, in Thurman, NY, Marian was the second child born to Edith Mattison Baker and Truman Baker. They moved often while Marian was growing up, necessitating that she acclimate to new schools numerous times—nine of these were one-room school houses, by the way. As she tended to be shy, this was often challenging for her. Her two siblings, Frances and Beecher passed some years ago. However, their children—as well as the children of her husband’s sibling, Kenneth Morey—remain close with their Aunt Marian.

Marian and her husband James had four children: Virginia Morey Pike of Corinth; Gail Morey Malcolm Couse (formerly of Lake George, NY, now deceased); Penny Morey of Boca Raton, FL; and Ike Morey who very recently retired from being a fire fighter. He and his wife Linda now reside in Murphy, NC, although they travel extensively.

Marian and her husband, James (Jim) were partners in running Morey Trucking for many years in the greater Lake George area. She managed the office and did the bookkeeping, as well. However, in her earlier years, she worked in Schenectady, NY, at General Electric during World War II while Jim was in the Navy serving in the Pacific. After the War, they returned home to the North Country. Marian continued to do her share to support the family, first working at a shirt factory in Warrensburg, NY and then in Glens Falls, NY. Marian and Jim also owned a home in Silver Springs, FL, where they spent the winter months for many years—traveling back and forth in a motor home. Eventually, they decided to spend their remaining years solely in Lake George. James passed at age 88 in 2007, a few months after they had celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Marian was an excellent cook and homemaker in every sense. Virginia Morey Pike learned many kitchen skills from her mom and is a fabulous cook and baker and well as being a warm and welcoming hostess for family gatherings for decades. Virginia also was a teacher for 27 years in the Glens Falls School District where she was awarded the “Teacher of the Year” honor in 1997.

Now, Marian is the matriarch of the Morey family. Her niece Richelene Morey (Mark Morey’s wife) and Mark, as well, are unfailingly helpful to Marian every week and in every way; and her niece Darlene Van Guilder Gunther visits weekly and she and her husband Bobby are always happy to be helpful to their Aunt Marian, also.

For Marian’s 100th birthday celebration, attendees included her local daughter, Virginia and her daughters Stephanie Pike Bedient from West Palm Beach, FL and Sonja Pike Potter and husband Kevin and her three daughters, from South Glens Falls, NY; her daughter Penny and her daughter, Alexandria Morey and her husband Joe Adams from Wallingford, VT; her son Ike and his wife Linda; her granddaughter Natalie Malcolm Adams and her daughter, Ellen from Boston; and many great and great-great grandchildren—plus so many friends and well-wishers. (Virginia’s daughter Stacy would have been there; but her daughter, Jine Miller LaBrake was graduating with her bachelors degree that same day--too many delightful things going on at once.)

Marian is a voracious reader and a number of family members work constantly to keep up with having new books for her to read. She recently read Becoming by Michelle Obama courtesy of her niece Darlene Van Guilder Gunther. She especially enjoyed learning more about Mrs. Obama, as she is one of Marian’s favorite people.Marian has a magnet on her refrigerator that says, “I plan to live forever. So far, so good!” Everyone hopes to see an article much like this one next June—covering Marian’s 101st birthday.

A tribute to dads

There are many words in many languages to describe what it means to be a father.

By Dan Alexander Dad, poppa, daddy, • PUBLISHER • pa, pops, poppy or whatever you called your father, they all have rich and meaningful sentimental importance.

I know in my case, while I always had great respect for my father, I never really appreciated what it meant to be a father until I held my son for the first time.

Suddenly, a light went off when I realized the awesome responsibility I had just undertaken.

It also became clear that the respect I thought I had for my father was never really enough. The sacrifices he made, the headaches I created for him and the times when I thought I knew better all came rushing back as I looked at the little life now in my arms.

Moms are great, but fathers mean so much to the family, especially in the formative years.

Having a father around while growing up was so important to my life, and now seeing my son be a great father to his children, I fully understand the importance and joys of fatherhood.

While society has changed today, the thought of father as the breadwinner and protector of the family is still the image and role most of us value the greatest. Studies show time and time again how significant a father’s influence is in the life of his children.

It’s too easy on Father’s Day to make a quick phone call, drop him a card or an email. But I can tell you when he’s gone, you’ll realize you’ve missed an important opportunity to share things with him that only you can do not just on Father’s Day but any day. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about Dad, who has been gone nearly 30 years now.

So make the most of this day to let dear old dad know how important he has been in your life. Share a personal story of something special he did years ago that made an impact on your life. Let him know you love and appreciate him in spite of the times he made you mad or was overly strict.

On behalf of all of us here at The Sun, we extend the warmest wishes to all fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers and soon-to be-fathers. We thank you for the job you do, raising our future citizens and sharing with them the values of love and the importance of family. ■

ATV Safety Week reminds families to ride responsibly The warm weather is finally here and for many of us in the North Country, that means spending more time outdoors. For

By Billy Jones many families, all-terrain • GUEST COLUMNIST • vehicles are an important part of the North Country way of life. Whether they are used to tend our farms, access hunting camps and backcountry or just have fun on the trails, the North Country would not be the same without them.

This past month, I had the opportunity to learn more about the sport, clubs and vehicles when I joined the Palmer Brook Sportsman’s Club for a ride.

I always enjoy the opportunity to get out and enjoy the North Country’s recreational trails on an ATV, and I would encourage riders to get involved in their local ATV club to learn more about opportunities to ride in their community.

In Clinton County, there is the OutbackRiders Club, Inc., which promotes responsible riding so that there are more opportunities to enjoy these recreational vehicles. In Franklin County, there is the Franklin All-Terrain Riders, Inc., which has been working to promote ATV safety and show that ATVs and automobiles constitute a very small percentage of area motor-vehicle accidents. Trump undercutting role of Congress

Editor’s note: This letter refers to Dan Alexander’s column, “Thoughts From Behind the Pressline: Hatred leads us nowhere,” which appeared in the June 1 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: At a time when the concept of “fake media” and media bias has become so rampant, I would like to suggest to Mr. Alexander that he take a lesson from media sources like NPR and PBS which bend over backward to present the news as evenhandedly as possible.

Relabeling congressional oversight as “hate the president” does very little to inform the discussion of the public affairs that a newspaper like The Sun seeks to cover.

President Trump, alone among recent candidates for the office of president of the United States, has resolutely refused to release his tax returns. Should we turn a blind eye to his attempts to undercut the constitutional role of the Congress to oversee the executive branch?

Franklin and St. Lawrence counties, there is the ATV Ruffriders Club, Inc., which seeks to improve the image of ATV riders by training both children and adults to respect the trails and other riders.

However, all of these clubs have a unifying concern. Every day, more riders, individuals and families are purchasing side-by-side utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) so that they can enjoy riding together or use for utility purposes on private land.

Unfortunately, most of these vehicles exceed the 1,000-pound weight limit allowed by New York state.

I have proposed legislation that would both create an ATV trail fund and statewide trail system as well as increase the weight limit to 1,500 pounds. This will allow residents across the state to register their vehicles and operate them legally on public roads to get between trails and private lands.

Opponents argue that this poses a threat to the Adirondacks, but the reality is that it is already illegal to ride any of these vehicles in forest preserves. When hikers started damaging trails, we didn’t ban them from the trails. As a state, we dedicated funding, increased staff and enacted harsher penalties to preserve the trails.

Banning these vehicles would create a missed revenue opportunity for our state and preclude law-abiding citizens

Threat to America is internal

Likewise, if Mr. Alexander has concerns about state property taxation, would it not be better for him to do some research into “the formula provided by the state” instead of adding his own admitted paranoia to a discussion already subject to misleading political rhetoric over tax cuts that seem to generate more taxes from those it was advertised to help? If his intent is to act as a voice of the Republican Party, I think his favoritism toward Elise Stefanik would adequately fulfi ll that intent.

It’s time that New York state catches up and finds ways to help ensure these vehicles are properly used and registered, while simultaneously protecting and expanding our trail system.

With that in mind, ATV Safety Week was June 1-9. This serves as a reminder to re-familiarize ourselves with the safety rules and regulations for driving all-terrain, side-by-side and utility vehicles. Making sure we use these vehicles safely helps to keep everyone in the North Country safe.

The Franklin County Recreational Trails Association offers many helpful tips on how to be safe on every ride. Additionally, they remind us to never drink and drive and the dangers that come from exceeding the limit of riders meant for each vehicle. I ask riders to get in touch with their local association if they have questions or concerns on safe riding practices.

If you do your part to maintain the integrity and safety of our trail systems, I’ll continue doing my part in Albany to protect the rights of North Country residents and ATV/UTV riders.

GIRL FIGHTS BACK

A Corinth boy, 23 years old, is under arrest, accused of misconduct with his sisters, 16 and 13 years old. The horrible crime alleged to have been committed by the young man was brought to light when the younger girl took $19 from her brother’s trunk and fled from home to escape further degradation.

The girl is at present confined in the Humane Society in Troy where she had been taken by an officer from Corinth when the boy threatened to make trouble about her taking the money and she retaliated by making known his criminal relations.

ADIRONDACK HOTEL OPENS

The Adirondack Hotel was reopened by the O’Connor Brothers the morning of May 1, 1919 after being closed since last October. “Tom” O’Connor is in charge of the office and he has procured a summer license permitting them to dispense liquid

refreshments for the summer.

(Note – In my day, the hotel was known as The Colonial Arms, and Rite Aid pharmacy is located there today after the hotel burned several times and was later torn down. I have two chairs in my home, given to me by my friend Garry Grant, that used to grace the dining room there. The hotel did indeed dispense “liquid refreshments” and it was the popular local place to hang out on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.)

FARMER’S ALERT

Farm Bureau manager Edward W. Cleeves has received complaints from several farmers in various parts of the county that dogs are killing and injuring their sheep. Henry Johnson, of Wevertown, reports a number of losses from his flock, killed by savage wild dogs.

Man arrested after road rage incident

The “Dean” bridge on the main highway of the town rattles, shakes and groans whenever a heavy auto passes over it.

SAD ENDING FOR ALL

Mrs. Sarah Gregory Combs, of Miller Hill, Glens Falls, died on June 4, 1919 at the Craig Colony for Epilepsy, where she had been receiving treatment for several weeks. Her husband, James W. Combs died a few days before at a tuberculosis hospital in Oneida County.

Both bodies were brought to Warrensburgh for joint burial.

The weekly events are to feature a cornhole tournament, and more games may be added as the summer progresses.

Although Horicon is known as a magnet for bicycle enthusiasts — with The Hub cafe/tavern/bike shop having become a regional attraction, the town has otherwise been fairly sleepy, with the exception of their annual Horicon Day event held in August and their new Woodstock Revisited party held last weekend.

This week, Horicon Town supervisor Matt Simpson said he expects that Food Truck Fridays will be fun and festive, adding that the concept was dreamed up by a group of business owners and Town Clerk Krista Wood.

“It’s an exciting new attraction for our town,” Simpson said. “It’s going to be a great weekly event, providing a fun time for visitors and residents.”

Wood deferred credit to the local business owners for brainstorming the event.

“They thought it would be a really good way to showcase the town and bring attention to local businesses, while offering something fun in town that we could call our own,” she said.

What began as a few small taco carts on one urban street and catering trucks at construction sites in Austin, Texas in the early 2000s, grew to 1,700 within a half-dozen years, fueled by the emergence of more than a dozen renowned music festivals including Austin City Limits and the South by Southwest.

Los Angeles was also one of the first cities to experience the proliferation of food trucks, and these two cities have sparked a trend throughout the nation. ■

THURMAN | A Stony Creek man was arrested for allegedly threatening an individual with a hammer and punching them in the face during a road rage incident.

The Warren County Sheriff’s Office responded to a property damage motor vehicle accident on Cameron Road in the Town of Thurman June 6. Police said an investigation determined that Robert S. Jackson, 58, of Stony Creek, initiated a road rage incident with another vehicle on Stony Creek Road which continued to Cameron Road.

Jackson allegedly initially stopped and confronted another driver with a hammer and when that driver fled, Jackson allegedly struck the other vehicle, forcing that vehicle into the guiderail, causing the second vehicle to become disabled. Jackson then allegedly punched the other driver with his fist.

Jackson was charged with criminal mischief in the third degree, a felony; menacing in the second degree, a misdemeanor; reckless endangerment in the second degree,a misdemeanor; and reckless driving, a misdemeanor.

The other driver was not injured in the incident and was not charged. Jackson was processed and released to appear in the Thurman Town Court on a later date. ■

Woof Stock and related fest in Brant Lake draw crowds

WARREN COUNTY | The towns of Horicon and Chester welcomed many hundreds of visitors last weekend as two major events — Woof Stock in Chestertown and Woodstock Revisited drew large crowds.

Over Saturday June 8 and Sunday June 9, Woof Stock — billed as a carnival for dogs and their owners — drew nearly 2,000 people.

This year, the festival attracted more people from outside New York State, according to festival organizer Cindy Mead.

“We had a lot more people this year from across New England — Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire,” she said, noting that social media likely attracted many from afar. “People are happy to be with their dogs, having a great time.”

The companion event in Brant Lake — Woodstock Revisited, drew between 200 and 300 people to an outdoor dog- and family-friendly concert Saturday June 8 on the premises of The Hub, a cafe/tavern/bicycle shop with a wide following.

Drew Cappabianca, proprietor of The Hub, said the crowd likely set an attendance record.

“People definitely enjoyed themselves — It was phenomenal,” he said. “Up here, there aren’t many opportunities to get together with a whole lot of other people, enjoy music, and ‘let loose.’ It’s really great for the community.”

Town of Horicon Supervisor Matt Simpson said he had heard a lot of positive comments about Woodstock Revisited, which featured two bands, socializing and craft beer at The Hub and free boat rides on the nearby Mill Pond courtesy of Loon Lake Marina.

“I heard the attendance was fantastic and the weather was perfect,” said Simpson, who was out of the area over the weekend. “The event is great for our town.”

petitions, a dog “fun zone” in which dogs chase a fast-moving lure through and over obstacles. Dozens of dogs competed in both attractions, while people milled around the festival site, socializing.

Town of Chester Supervisor Craig Leggett said the two-day Woof Stock offered a rare opportunity to go to a festival accompanied by a dog — which spurs friendly encounters.

“What’s unique is that you are showing up with a pet — a natural ice-breaker,” he said. “A dog on a leash opens the door for mingling with other people, and enjoying good conversation.”

Leggett said that Woof Stock and Woodstock Revisited introduced Chestertown and Brant Lake to hundreds of families who otherwise might not have visited. “ These events give our towns exposure

Lake George seniors commit to collegiate sports

LAKE GEORGE | Twelve senior scholarathletes at Lake George High School gathered for a ceremony May 31 to affirm their intent to play a sport this fall at their chosen Division II or Division III college.

Lake George Central School District Athletic Director Kyle Manny said the celebration was notable, considering the size of Lake George High, which has a relatively modest enrollment of around 300 students in grades 7 through 12.

“We are proud to have an exceptional number of student-athletes not only pursuing their academic careers, but continuing their athletics at a collegiate level,” he said. “Twelve such students in one year is extraordinary for a school our size, and speaks to the abilities of our athletes as well as the strength of our school system’s athletic programs,” he said.

Manny added that the ceremony at Lake George High was an enjoyable and appropriate way to celebrate — with dozens of family members and friends of the athletes participating — people that helped the scholarathletes along their way.

TUPPER LAKE | The Wild Center will host a summer institute for state teachers, July 15-18, focused on “Empowering Students for Climate Resilience.” The event will bring together middle and high school teachers across all disciplines for a hands-on exploration of climate change and educational best practices.

The institute will feature a keynote and conversation with Bill McKibben, an environmentalist, author and educator who has written extensively on the impact of climate change and global warming.
