STA FF W RITER
QUEENSBURY | The chief executive of Saratoga & North Creek Railway (SNCR) has threatened to discontinue the train service soon between the two municipalities unless he and his associates are paid millions of dollars for the 30-mile stretch of track they own between North Creek and Tahawus.

Volunteers including Susan Shepler (right foreground) serve up food for folks attending Thurman’s annual Jack Wax party, a beloved community event — held each March for 59 years — that raises money to combat cancer. Photo by Thom Randall

NORTH CREEK | The board of directors of the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing Home Auxiliary announced the auxiliary is dissolving after some 45 years of service due to the sale of the not-for-profit nursing home to Post Acute Partners, who are operating it as Elderwood at North Creek.
ATHOL | Al Mundy leaned against the kitchen sink in the Thurman town hall, watching fellow volunteers serve up portions of hearty food for dozens of people during the town’s legendary Jack Wax Party held Saturday March 10. When asked what the annual event meant to him, Mundy’s hearty laugh ended abruptly and his smile sank into a grim expression. The event, held each year in March, raises money for the area chapter of the American Cancer Society.

TRI-COUNTY NURSING HOME AUXILIARY TO DISBAND
Iowa Pacific CEO Ed Ellis said his company’s tourist passenger service will cease before summer unless Warren County or the state government pays $5 million to buy the North Creek-Tahawus line that Ellis and his investors bought several years ago for about $1 million. He said his company is in financial distress and can’t afford to subsidize the money-losing passenger service while he continues to seek freight contracts over the next three to five years. » Train Cont. on pg. 5
