Warren County COVID-19 cases jump 70% in a day By Thom Randall STAFF WRITER

WARREN COUNTY | On March 29, while New York’s coronavirus deaths surged by 33 percent in a single day to 965, Warren County’s number of confirmed COVID-19 cases jumped from 10 to 17, but no deaths of county residents had occurred as of midafternoon Sunday. The number of people hospitalized in Warren County, however, remained at three, as some who were recovering were discharged and quarantined at home, county

TENTS ARE UP BUT SUPPLIES ARE DOWN By Laurel Carroll STAFF WRITER

NORTHERN NEW YORK | To help accommodate the increasing need for coronavirus screenings and testing, Hudson Headwaters Health Network (HHHN) has set up two large tents—one at the West Mountain 2 Health Center in Queensbury, and the other in Champlain—with other HHHN sites utilizing smaller tents. In the last week and a half, HHHN providers have ordered or performed roughly 500 COVID-19 tests, some returning with positive results. Unfortunately, due to the statewide shortage of testing supplies, tests have now been restricted to symptomatic network health care providers. The Johnsburg town board issued a notice on this topic, urging people from downstate — if they do come to the area — to bring with them all the food and supplies they need for a two-week quarantine at home, then when the sequestering is over, to adhere to social distancing mandates as well as always shopping solo. Johnsburg has declared that any visitors should not visit Adirondack-area convenience or grocery stores until after they’ve self-quarantined for two weeks, and then only if they are symptom-free. They advise the people who’ have already arrived here to call a local resident to shop for them or call the Johnsburg Town Hall and a volunteer will provide help. News reports have cited that rural getaway destinations across the nation have been swamped with a surge of people assuming they can avoid catching the virus by fleeing to the bucolic pastoral environs, but they end up bringing with them COVID-19, infecting many others, creating a strain on the rural health facilities. The Warren County Public Health Department can be reached at 518-761-6580, and the Essex County Health Department’s phone number is 518-873-3500. ■

Meanwhile, pronouncements

from U.S. government officials on March 29 were sobering. President Trump’s leading expert on the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Anthony Fauci, predicted on Sunday that 100,000 to 200,000 people in the U.S. could die from the disease within 12 months. He also said that “millions” of people were likely to contract the disease. Trump commented during the news conference that if these predictions weren’t surpassed, his administration would “have done a good job.” Sunday, federal officials reported that coronavirus-related deaths in the U.S. had surged to more than 2,000, double the number just two days beforehand. ■

said — and such facilities are vital in preventing as many deaths as possible. But those people who do come to the Adirondacks regardless of the warnings are asked to self-isolate for 14 days and check in with their respective county Health Department. Additionally, officials from both counties are requesting that all property owners remove their short-term rentals of Adirondackarea homes from AirBnb, Vrbo and similar online websites as soon as possible. Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman said that area health facilities even struggle to keep up with the needs of summer vacationers, and are incapable of handing an influx during this serious pandemic. New arrivals “should not have an expectation that resources will be available to you here,” he said. Local government officials have noted that the availability of food and other necessities is generally in very short supply especially in the remote areas of the Adirondacks, and that stores have been scrambling to merely keep up with the year-round residents’ needs.

WARREN COUNTY | Officials of both Warren and Essex counties are urging downstaters and others seeking to leave metropolitan and suburban areas to stay at home as Governor Cuomo has advised. In short, do not come to the Adirondack region during the coronavirus pandemic. People coming from New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Rockland counties as well as New Jersey should heed the warning, area health officials have advised. The reasoning for the warning is that the few local hospitals that exist in the region have extremely limited staff, equipment and facilities to take care of people that are likely to be unknowingly infected with the serious illness. The hospitals of clinics in the Adirondacks have few intensive care beds, if any, they’ve

epidemic subsides. As of March 29, state officials said there were a total of 59,513 confirmed cases of COVID-19 — with 8,503 hospitalized, including 2,037 in intensive care units, according to a report by Brendan Lyons of the Albany Times Union. Decades ago, Lyons was a reporter for the Glens Falls Post-Star. Despite the ever-increasing number of cases, hospital discharges across the state were rising daily last week, which included individuals which recovered. Administrator Ryan Moore said. Of these confirmed cases, county Public Health Services documented three full recoveries as of March 29, while the remainder were receiving medical attention, Moore said. “We are confident in the quality of care they are receiving,” Moore said, noting that public health workers are working around the clock conducting interviews, and identifying exposures. These actions continue to prompt health workers to initiate quarantines, track and check in with quarantined patients, and confirm test results, he said. “We, and the individuals in our community who are living with the realities of coronavirus as we speak, are lucky to have these dedicated professionals,” Moore said in a prepared statement. Moore also asked Warren County residents to “remain vigilant” about staying home, wash hands often, and use hand sanitizer before and after visiting stores or other public places. He also asked that people support local restaurants that offer takeout or delivery — in order to help them survive the financial hardships stemming from their mandated closure. Moore also reiterated the county’s request for seasonal homeowners and area visitors — especially those who have come from downstate metropolitan areas and New Jersey — to self-isolate at home for at least 14 days in order to prevent a burden on area hospitals that would not

Johnsburg holds virtual town meetings By Thom Randall STAFF WRITER

NORTH CREEK | Current developments in the town of Johnsburg will be presented to the public in a new series of virtual town hall meetings, town Supervisor Andrea Hogan announced March 26. At 9 a.m., each Friday, for the foreseeable future, residents invited to listen to announcements and have their questions answered by Hogan and other town officials. Updates are also on the town’s Facebook page

as well as in The Sun newspaper, she added. The one-hour virtual town meetings will be held via a Zoom videoconference and also can be heard via telephone. Hogan said this series of Friday meetings is to provide updates on local services as well as town and county government proceedings and news, including announcements and developments related to COVID-19. These virtual town hall events are being held to “support citizens in these uncertain times,” Hogan said. The fi rst virtual town hall meeting was

held on March 27. Hogan and town board member Arnold Stevens moderated the meeting, and about 20 local residents logged in and interacted with the two. Hogan said Sunday that she and Stevens explained why the town had declared a state of emergency, and announced a weekly Monday evening “Community Connections” videoconference hosted by Suzanne Comb. The also discussed, with participating citizens, Warren County’s recent announcement asking people from metropolitan areas where COVID-19 is rampant to stay at home — or if they come up here, self-quarantine for 14 days. “In the upcoming Friday meetings, we will be informing people about local events happening online, and we will be facilitating as many ways for our community to connect as we can,” Hogan said Sunday. “We’ll also seeking out more people who would like to present online events like this.” Hogan added that these vitual town hall sessions on Fridays will feature Johnsburg board members, local business and nonprofit leaders and other informed people. Additionally, residents are encouraged to check Johnsburg’s Facebook fpage or updates and the Sun Community News each Friday, Hogan said. MAKING LEMONADE

Stymied by virus business goes to Plan B By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER

PORT HENRY | With her business — which includes the sale of knitted sweaters, scarves and hats — shut down by a pandemic, Susan McHone wanted an alternative way to reach the public. So she installed a cabinet outside of Port Home Goods on Broad Street in Port Henry and stocked it with yarn. Anyone who needs some is free to take a skein at no cost, and anyone who has some extra is encouraged to drop it off. It does not directly generate revenue, but it may generate an interest in knitting that will translate into an interest in her product line once things get back to normal. “I encourage everyone to take advantage of this new community service and am available once the shop opens again to help with any knitting projects,” she said. McHone is one of a number of Adirondackers who has zigged when the traditional business cycle zagged, finding creative ways to sell products, shift occupations or maintain interest in their stores during a time of economic uncertainty. McHone said she was a member of a knitting group in Boston, and would like to see similar interest here. With people being advised to isolate until the coronavirus is past, she said it seems only natural that people would like to

learn to knit or do more of it if they already know how. McHone said she was inspired by free book exchanges that operate out of a cabinet in neighborhoods or in front of libraries. “Then I saw an article about a yarn library in Philadelphia where they do the same thing with yarn that they do with books,” she said. “Anyone in the community can take what they want for yarn and I’ll be replenishing

the box as yarn is taken. I’m also putting occasional patterns and knitting needles into the box.” For some, the commercial shutdown has prompted a switch to new revenue streams to tide them over until the private sector gets back on its feet. In Wilmington, Chelsea Walker lost not only her job as a hair stylist at an upscale resort, but also her hobby — downhill skiing at nearby Whiteface mountain, which

was also closed when the virus hit. For her, staying busy was not only a matter of economic necessity, it was a matter of maintaining sanity. And while the economy might not have been running, the maple sap was, so she and her partner Dan Winkler, who also lost work as a chef, have been working on their annual tree-tapping and getting seedlings started for summer vegetables. On a recent spring day, Walker was pouring sap, while Winkler was upcycling some old windows into a cold frame. “We have always wanted to be a little more self-sustaining,” Walker said. “It’s not like this will make much, but it earns a little on the side to pay the bills.” Plus, they get to be outside, working on projects they enjoy. The fortunes of Adirondack business owners are often seasonal, and while some restaurants shut down for a couple of weeks in April anyway — taking one last breath before the rush — for Renee Scuderi, owner of Tromblee’s greenhouse in Crown Point, this is getting very close to crunch time. Trucks keep bringing more plants, but whether her market will be there for her inventory remains to be seen. “It’s scary to have all these deliveries keep coming,” she said. “But I have faith that everybody’s going to really be ready to garden this spring.” Because she is deemed agricultural, and therefore essential, Scuderi said she can remain open, but even so, business has to be done in a different way. To show off her inventory she employs Adirondack Drone, which shoots an interactive virtual tour of her gift shop and

greenhouses — 360-degree imaging that lets customers feel as if they’re walking through the shop. Corey Ja mes, ow ner of Adirondack Drone, said for his company a slowdown in business now may translate into an increase later on, as entrepreneurs get a glimpse of what the technology can do. “We do a lot of work for the hospitality industry and storefronts that still have product to sell, but no way to get it to the customers,” he said. Even without a pandemic, “this is where the trend is going,” he said. Shoppers can see what the stores have to offer, and then buy online or over the phone. And the virtual tours give customers a familiarity with the store, which will make them more

comfortable shopping there in the future. There’s a bit of a psychological barrier to stepping into an unfamiliar store, but the tours make customers feel as if they’ve been there before, James said. And with realtors deemed nonessential, James said virtual tours are so realistic that homebuyers have the confidence to put in offers on property they are prohibited from being shown in real life. “It’s gone from being a marketing tool to a necessity,” James said. “This is the only way people are going to walk through a house right now.” James said savvy businesses, the ones that will thrive when the pandemic lifts, are doing their marketing now, when many others have gone dark. “This is a great time to advertise,” he said. ■

Businesses ignoring closure mandate could be prosecuted STAFF WRITER

QUEENSBURY | Warren County businesses that stay open or allow customers inside their premises regardless of state closure orders could face prosecution, Warren County Administrator Ryan Moore warned this week. Moore issued a public statement March 27 that urged county residents to contact authorities about businesses that weren’t following state mandates to shut down due to the spreading COVID-19 virus. “If you see businesses in your communities that are not abiding by the Governor’s executive orders and social distancing measures, please report them to the Warren County Sheriff’s Office,” Moore’s notice said, noting that county law enforcement officials would take action on the complaint. “There are still some who

believe the coronavirus is a ‘hoax’ — it is not.” He said that he and other county officials have been discussing aspects of the closure mandate with state officials — and that Cuomo issued an executive order Friday that failure to abide by business closure orders and social distancing would be considered a building code violation. Code enforcement officials and fire marshals are authorized to issue appearance tickets, notices of violation and even “Do Not Occupy” orders to businesses found in violation, Moore continued. “Police officers are also authorized to remove people from businesses found in violation or take action against congregations” or gatherings of people not following the social distancing protocols, he said. Moore added that Cuomo’s executive order had been provided to the county’s Buildings and Codes department

and office of Emergency Services as well as the county Sheriff and District Attorney. “They will work out execution of this order in Warren County if needed,” he said. As of March 29, reports were heard that some businesses in Warren County were continuing to allow customers inside their

premises, or serving up drinks while take-out orders were being prepared. One municipal official in Lake George said Sunday that village trustees and town board members were planning to hold a meeting soon to strategize how to ensure the state mandates were followed. ■

WARRENSBURG | Teachers and staff members of Warrensburg Elementary school boosted spirits of area children and their parents March 26 — while adhering to the dictates of social distancing. The educators drove through town in a parade of a dozen cars — several of which displayed rainbow posters, signaling that there are happier days ahead. Their hour-long parade was met with cheers, waves, and squeals from children on the sidewalks. The mid-afternoon procession went up and down virtually all the streets in the Warrensburg hamlet. Shannon Morrison, an assistant teacher at Small Tales Early Learning Center of Warrensburg stood outside with seven of her students beside River Street and videotaped the parade while her children yelled out greetings to the instructors as they drove by, waving. Morrison said she was impressed by the gesture that demonstrated a strong community bond during uncertain times. “The teachers reaching out to the kids with the parade showed they really care about them,” she said. “It was phenomenal — really heartwarming.” See PARADE » pg. 5

‘I’ll have a Michigan with a side of TP’ By Laurel Carroll STAFF WRITER

TICONDEROGA | You’ll find no grass growing under Bobby Porter’s cross-trainers. Inspired by panic-driven shoppers who run daily dawn sorties on the local Walmart’s toilet paper inventory, the owner of the Wind-Chill Factory has married his sense of humor with his business savvy: every takeout order totally $15 or more includes a free roll of toilet paper. ”I bought them through a distributor I use,” he said, “I have a lot,” and although this interview took place over the phone, I could ‘see’ the deadpan expression on his face. But Mr. Porter has a serious side as well. In a generous expression of appreciation for what Walmart sales associates have been going through lately, he treated the entire staff—split over two days to ensure no one was left out—to enough pizza and ice cream soft twists to make 160 people

happy. A Walmart employee also mentioned that Porter had done the same for Ticonderoga’s local emergency room team. When the University of Vermont’s spokesperson was queried about this, she replied, “It’s quite possible there was a donation. I can confirm that there were, in fact, pizza boxes at the Ti ED.” The man doesn’t like to blow his own horn, but he was emphatic about one thing: “They [Walmart sales associates] do so much for us—working extra hours to keep their shelves stocked, exposing themselves to this virus—and they put up with a lot of rude customers. They need to know they’re appreciated.”

The Wind-Chill Factory fi rst ‘opened its doors’ on April 6, 1996, starting out with a much simpler menu selection. Over the years, that menu has grown, thanks, no doubt to Bob’s business acumen and generosity as well as the support of family and friends. ■ Pizza to go with a side of TP provides a bit of comic relief to the current COVID-19 scare.

StreetFest gets ready for July It’s time to submit merchant/vendor applications By Laurel Carroll STAFF WRITER

TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership StreetFest committee is now accepting merchant and vendor applications for 2020. The event is scheduled to take place July 25. Participants include vendors, downtown

WCS Literacy instructor Michelle Olden lead the parade in her car, which had large rainbow pictures affixed to her car. Librarian Jennifer Casabonne’s care bore a poster urging children to read. Other teachers’ cars had posters or greetings scribed on windows, like “We Love You,” and “We Miss You.” WCS Elementary Music Teacher Sheryl Davey was in the parade, reaching out the window, waving a blue recorder instrument and greeting children. She had dreamed up the parade idea after seeing one of her students last week in the Price Chopper parking lot, she recalled on Saturday. “She was so excited to see me, and

merchants, area businesses, retail stores, restaurants, food vendors, non-profits, artisans, farmers, arts and crafts vendors and vendors with local hand-crafted products, and should contribute something that will enhance the day’s festivities (i.e., not be just “informational” material). The Vendor Fee is $40 for applications received by May 29, 2020, and bumps up to $50 after that date. The deadline is July 10. While there is no fee for Montcalm Street businesses or sponsors, registration is still required. Download an application at timainstreet.org, ticonderogany.com or call 518-585-6619. (Applications have already been sent out to last year’s participants.) All applications are subject to approval. ■

I felt the same — it brought tears to my eyes,” Davey said. “It really hit me how much I miss my students, and how they might miss their teachers.” After seeing a teachers’ parade on television afterwards, Davey organized one for Warrensburg. Witnessing the parade were Delia Tabano, her husband Brian, her eightyear-old daughter Dominique and three-year-old son Jayce. “The experience was quite emotional in a very good way — to see the teachers’ support for the families, making such an important connection with the kids,” she said. “It meant a lot, particularly for my daughter. My children miss their teachers.” Brian chuckled as their children chattered nearby.

Planning is now underway for StreetFest 2020.

“Parents miss the teachers as well,” he said. Davey said Saturday that the WCS Elementary teachers may be repeating their tour through town Thursday April 2 — and they might schedule a trip to Athol, passing by the Thurman Town Hall — as long as people stay six feet apart. “We’d like to visit Athol, but we don’t want people congregating,” she said. “We want all the kids to know we’re thinking about them.” Davey said she knows that with children now at home with their parents in order to protect everyone’s health, people may be experiencing cabin fever. “I can imagine these kids are cooped up in their houses, and some of them are probably driving their parents nuts.” ■

North Country Ministry reaching out to families in need By Thom Randall STAFF WRITER

WARREN COUNTY | Although several of their programs are suspended, North Country Ministry is continuing to help people who are facing urgent needs. The agency operates outreach centers in North Creek, Warrensburg and Pottersville. Due to state of emergency declarations over the spread of COVID-19 and the stay-at-home orders, the following services of North Country Ministry have been halted at least through April 17. These programs include Baby’s Place boutiques, family clothing centers, Furniture Barn, and Gathering Place. The agency’s two food pantries will be open according to their normal schedule, but with social distancing methods utilized.

As of March 28, existing plans called for continuing caseworker services at all three locations. For details, contact Laurie Bartlett at 518-623-2829 ext. 302 or via email at: ncmassistant.wc@gmail.com Rebecca Bammert, Director of Caseworker Services for North Country Ministry, said that the organization is deemed an “essential service,” and its staff remains active in helping people figure out how to cope with hardships — although counseling is temporarily accomplished via phone rather than in person. “We’re answering a ton of questions, whether it’s about the new unemployment benefits, county social services, paying a utility bill, or where they might be able to get a job. “So many people I’ve talked with are panicked about how they’re going to pay their rent,” she said. She also said she’s receive a lot of calls from people who are concerned about whether they will receive the newly announced federal stimulus checks of $1,200 per individual adults, $2,400 for married couples and an additional $500 for each Rebecca Bammert, director of case management for North Country child. These stipends are based on information on Ministry, prepares a box of food for a family seeking assistance through their food pantry program, held on Wednesday afternoons. And so it continues

To the Editor: During this unprecedented time for every American, I forward this letter, regarding older adults who reside in longterm care facilities. I am requesting that this letter to the editor be published in your upcoming issue. The New York State Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is a resident-centered and resident-directed advocacy program available to anyone residing in a nursing home, adult care facility or family-type home across the state. The Long Term Care Ombudsman Program sponsored by North Country Center for Independence covers Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. Ombudsmen advocate for residents to address quality of life and quality of care issues along with resident’s rights concerns. At this time when visitation to facilities has been restricted, we would like families and residents to know that the Ombudsman Program must also abide by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) guidelines for no in-person visitation. With that said, our office remains fully able to accept and receive phone calls regarding any concerns or questions you may have about care. Please call 518-562-1732 to contact us. Our Certified Ombudsman volunteers will be ready to return to their weekly commitment once the visitation restriction has been lifted. As you can imagine, residents are in much need of an advocacy program during this unprecedented time. We will be scheduling our next training session when social distancing protocols are lifted, at which time we will be looking for new volunteers to become Ombudsmen and help us advocate on behalf of our long-term care residents.

I had hoped to find a new subject this week to write about other than the COVID-19 virus, but it remains the one common denominator in our lives right now. It also was just announced that the President and his team have chosen to extend the national guidelines for curbing the virus by keeping all non-essential businesses, schools, and events closed through the month of April. It remains to be seen how the nation will respond to another four weeks of staying and/ or working at home. While no one should question the impact the virus is having on those who contract the virus nor the overall goal to lessen its effect on the population, we can only hope and pray that this valuable time does save many lives. We are told every day if we stay hunkered down in our homes and avoid all unnecessary social contact, we are preventing the spread of the virus and thus saving lives—possibly our own or even those of our loved ones. Only time will tell if we are successful in controlling the death rate until a viable remedy or vaccine can be created. One thing we know for sure, give American entrepreneurs a challenge, and they will find multiple ways to solve it. In the meantime, can we have a little fun to contemplate some of the inadvertent consequences the pandemic will have on the world and our lifestyle? Is social distancing here to stay? Are hugs, handshakes, kisses, and high-fives a thing of the past? Will this be the beginning of a new meaning to the “Me too movement”? Are masks, gloves, and perhaps even fashionable respirators going to be the hot new Christmas gifts 2020? Will the kids ever go back to school or is virtual teaching with parental support than then next pandemic? Can adults really be productive working from home (without the kids, of course,) wearing their jammies all day long? Can the NBA or NFL survive with the six-foot separation rule still intact? Will next season’s new TV hit be “Celebrity Handwashing”? Will white toilet paper go out of style now that everyone has so much and be replaced by designer colors? And lastly, can this all just be a bad dream, and when we wake up in the morning, will life be as it was? Come on, smile. All this will be over before you know it, and we’ll be back to our old routines before you can say Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. (You mean after all TV binge-watching you did, you didn’t watch Marry Poppins?) Take care, hang in there, be safe, and keep washing those hands. ■

To the Editor: Farmers know adversity well. Dealing with the unknown is part of the very nature of what we do every day. Whether it is the weather, fluctuating commodity prices or the issues that come with running a small business, we take what we are dealt and make the best of it. Therefore, New Yorkers should be confident that farmers will help get us through these uncertain times as we confront the COVID-19 pandemic. People rushed to the grocery stores to stock up, but they shouldn’t worry that we will run out of food. Americans are blessed with a productive agricultural community that makes food safety a priority. We have an abundant food supply in this country, and farmers and their employees are currently on the job to keep it that way. New York Farm Bureau urged the state to make agriculture an essential service, keeping us open for business and the supply chain moving. You can also rest assured that farms are taking special precautions to keep the workplaces clean and our employees as safe as possible to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. Food security is national security. Today’s world is reminding us of that in a big way. Keeping farms in business must remain a priority. As we marked National Agriculture Day on March 24, let’s all give thanks to the food on our tables and the men and women who help put it there all along the food chain.

To the Editor: It seems the current dictatorial administration in Washington D.C. is making exceptional decisions in the face of the devastating pandemic going on with little constructive input or help from the State leaders. Take our State leader for example. He has his hand out to cover his failures to properly prepare for such an occurrence. Though travel was cut off from the source of the problem, China, he failed to try to contain it in his own state by restricting travel to other areas of his state or other states spreading the virus far and wide even into our area. It seems when decisions are left to lower level leaders with some guidelines to help there is no common sense used. An example, we are told to not congregate to keep distance from others as much as possible so much so that our seating in these ruling chambers has been separated by 6 to 10 feet. Everyone doing the safe thing. Now I hear in our rural areas, the dumps or landfill open times have been reduced instead of expanded. That seems counterproductive. Instead of people, many overtime when doing their chores are now funneled into many at once in restricted time and area. Does the seating arrangement reduce our ability to think? Even in war we have to use common sense and not follow blindly when given a mission that involves our own awareness of the landscape. Perhaps this is another warning of things down the road. Thank God, He is in control. — Carl Thomas, Stony Creek, NY ■

Johnsburg students learn to ski on Gore Mt.

By Thom Randall STAFF WRITER

NORTH CREEK | Youngsters at Johnsburg Elementary School have learned the basics of skiing, skills that are likely to bring them enjoyment for a lifetime, according to people familiar with a new ski instruction program at Gore Mountain for local children. This winter, 20 Johnsburg second graders took skiing lessons at Gore Mountain on Thursdays for six weeks. The program ended for this school-year in mid-March. Only five of the students had skied before the program began, but within a month, all 20 had learned how to ski, according to Trena Riedinger, who along with her husband Rob Riedinger and Anna Bowers introduced the idea of primary-grade skiing to the school. “After only three weeks, there are 15, excited happy new converts” to the sport of skiing, Trena Riedinger said, noting that school superintendent Mike Marwica and principal Heather Flanagan and the local school board deserved credit for making the program a reality. “I’ve heard from parents that the children loved the experience,”

Gathering for a group photo after an afternoon of skiing at Gore Mountain in a weekly program, Johnsburg Central School second graders exhibit their enthusiasm for the sport. Photo by Kim McKenna Trena said. Support for this program came from two popular fundraising events at Bar Vino, parents who donated clothing and equipment, the New York State Educational Foundation and the Cloudsplitter Foundation. Also contributing support were such businesses as Beaverbrook Outfitters and TC Murphy Lumber Co. of Wevertown, Gore Mountain Ski Center, and The Sports Page of Glens Falls. The program is an outgrowth of a

ski swap program for youth conducted annually for more than a dozen years at Johnsburg Central, in which many local citizens donate their ski clothing and equipment or exchange it, while others obtain what they need for several seasons. The proceeds from donations at the event go towards outfitting children for the sport. Trena and Rob Riedinger, and their son Patrick have for years been running the ski swap, along with Kelly and Bob Nessle. Kelly and Trena both serve on the Johnsburg Youth

Committee, a sponsor of the swap.; Kelly wrote a grant to obtain funding. Rob Riedinger noted that as ski clothing and equipment can be costly, the popular ski swap has outfitted 25 to 30 children per year at the cost of only $1 to their families. He also noted that Gore Mountain donated the services of a skiing technician that got the second graders’ skis ready for the slopes. Gore also routinely provides season passes for all students enrolled in Johnsburg Central, he said.

Second grade teachers Kim McKenna and Kristin Mosher accompanied the children to the skiing sessions this year. McKenna said the second graders learned skiing techniques early in life — skills that they would draw on over the decades ahead. She added that they also had a lot of fun. “Many of the children had never been on skis before, and to watch them develop into skiers was really exciting,” she said, noting that many of them might not have otherwise taken up the sport if it weren’t incorporated into a gym class during school hours. With this year’s successful initial program, Riedinger and Bowers and school officials are looking forward to a potential expansion of the program in the future — likely having Johnsburg students from two primary grades engaged in the program. McKenna said her students were joyous about the skiing on Gore Mountain. “Every kid absolutely loved it — they looked forward to it each week,”” she said adding that the ski instructors at Gore were “excellent” with the children. “We all hope that it will continue next year. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful mountain in our backyard.” ■

BOY INJURED BY AUTOMOBILE

BOY KILLED, COMMUNITY GRIEVES

A nineteen year old Chestertown youth, Francis J. Hill, was instantly killed Friday afternoon, March 25, 1960 when a log slipped from a truck he was unloading and struck him in the head. The accident occurred about 2:15 p.m. as Hill was unloading logs at the Pennock sawmill on Warrensburg – Stony Creek Road, about five miles from Warrensburg, near the Thurman Bridge. There were no witnesses to the accident. Sheriff Carl McCoy, who conducted the investigation, theorized that the youth had released the chain, which held the load of logs on his truck. One log on top of the pile apparently shook loose and came crashing down on Hill’s skull. He was found lying on the ground behind the truck.

Stephen Burch, 13, was reported making satisfactory recovery at the Glens Falls Hospital after being hit by an automobile on Main Street, Warrensburg, on Sunday, March 27, 1960. Steven is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Burch of 3 Pratt Street, Warrensburg and he suffered a fractured hip. Robert L. Seagle tickets on sale Music colony hopes summer shows will go on By Tim Rowland STAFF WRITER

ELIZABETHTOWN | Those looking forward to a time the coronavirus has run its course can, with fingers crossed, get tickets to the upcoming Seagle Music Colony’s 2020 summer shows in Schroon Lake. “We know that once this crisis is over, the power that music and art have to help us heal will be critical to our collective recovery, and when that time comes, Seagle Music Colony will be here. Seagle’s directors wrote in a notice that as things stand now the show will go on. “We want to let you know that we are closely monitoring the ever-changing situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, wrote Artistic Director Darren Woods and General Director Tony Kostecki . “At the present time, we are continuing to plan for our 2020 season as scheduled. At the same time, we are

making sure we explore contingencies, and will enact any recommended changes to how we operate in order to ensure the health and safety of every member of the Seagle Music Colony family — including our artists, staff, board, donors and audience members. The Seagle Music Colony’s 105th season kicks off in the Oscar Seagle Memorial Theatre on June 27, at 7:30 p.m., with the traditional opening concert that will feature songs and arias from all 32 of Seagle Emerging Artists, and will be followed by a reception where audience members can meet and greet the singers. Mainstage productions will begin in lively fashion on July 8 with Johann Strauss’ sparkling classic, “Die Fledermaus,” first performed in Vienna in 1874, during the golden age of operetta. It’s bright, familiar overture is the backdrop to a farcical romp of pranks and ham-handed revenge. Next up, beginning on July 22 is Massenet’s “Cinderella,” a colorful celebration of the tale made famous by Walt Disney. It is sung in French, but summer director Richard Kagey said it is the French version of the fairy tale with which Americans are most familiar. It involves glass slippers, whereas the

Italian version, for example, features bracelets. For Adirondackphiles, the highlight of the season might likely be “Harmony,” a world premiere opera. Woods said “Harmony” had bounced around New York for a considerable amount of time without result — at which point Seagle pounced on the idea. Woods said he cold-called the work’s author, Keene novelist and poet Russell Bank—who also wrote “Cloudsplitter”, the historical novel of abolitionist John Brown— who was interested in moving the project forward. “Harmony” explores the relationship between composer Charles Ives and an older Mark Twain, the tie between the two being Joe Twichell, Twain’s closest friend

for over 40 years, and Twichell’s daughter Harmony, who became Ives’ wife. “There are references to Mt. Marcy and Rooster Comb that Adirondackers will enjoy,” Kagey said. The mainstage season finishes Aug. 19-22 with the Broadway classic “Hello Dolly,” the story of matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi, played by Carol Channing in the original Broadway cast after the role was turned down by Ethel Merman. The show at the time logged a record stay on Broadway, and remains a popular attraction that sells out theaters to this day. Tickets can be ordered by calling 518-5327875 or online at seaglecolony.org. ■

Warren County Clerk’s and DMV offices closed, but don’t fret... By Thom Randall STAFF WRITER

QUEENSBURY | Although the Warren County’s DMV office — the local government’s most popular venue — is now closed to the public due to the county Municipal Center’s lockdown as well as a directive by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) — people seeking to renew registrations or conduct other vital transactions shouldn’t worry. Motor Vehicle transactions are not being processed by counties across the state at this time, but some of them are being conducted online by state DMV personnel. Warren County Clerk Pamela Vogel posted a notice online that the county clerk’s and DMV offices would be making radical temporary changes. She posted the notice soon after Warren County — under mandates to cut on-site staffing and protect the health of its employees — closed all its buildings to the public on March 20. Meanwhile, Cuomo announced a day later that expiration dates of March 1 or later for driver licenses, non-driver identification cards, and vehicle registrations will be extended for an indefinite time. During this closure of DMV and Clerk’s office closures, all in-office appointments were canceled.

The state DMV officials said that change of addresses, renewing replacing licenses, registrations or permits can be transacted online. In addition to DMV transaction details, Vogel’s notice declared that the Warren County Clerk’s office would not be accepting any drop-off or in-person transactions. Although non-essential county clerk services — including transactions involving passports, DBA filings, notary renewals and pistol permits are suspended until further notice — recordings and court filings submitted electronically or by mail will be accepted. Such e-filings are strongly accepted, and can be conducted 24 hours per day, seven days per week, she said. People can also access county records 2 4/ 7 at: https: www.warrencountyny. gov/clerk/online_records.php. Vogel said her office would continue to respond to citizens’ needs as diligently as possible under the present circumstances. “On behalf of the entire staff at the Warren County Clerk’s office and Department of Motor Vehicles, please know that your cooperation at this most difficult time is greatly appreciated,” she said in the notice. “Rest assured, we will do our very best for you — Be safe, be well.” ■

CHOCOLATE BUNNIES SWEETEN THINGS UP

North Country SPCA

Cute cuddle buddies Lauer & Evanna By Bryeanna Villani COLUMNIST

Lauer came to us as a young kitten but being the shyest of his litter, he was overlooked in favor of more outgoing kittens. The three-year-old black and white cat is our resident shy guy, who is skittish around people and doesn’t like a lot of attention. He does get along well with most cats and is often found cuddling in the same bed with his feline friend Evanna. We don’t know what Lauer thinks about dogs. Lauer will warm up to people over time, especially when they offer treats. However, he will likely be a better companion cat than cuddle buddy. Evanna was a stray who ended up at the shelter around the same time as Lauer. This compact tortie and Lauer are best friends and always found hanging out together. Evanna is another

three-year-old shy kitty who is also skittish around people and prefers the company of cats. Evanna’s attention can be bought easier than Lauer’s with treats, she’s always in the mood for a tasty snack! Evanna came to the shelter with her front paw broken and useless, the injury already healed incorrectly. However, this doesn’t stop Evanna for a second, and she has no issues at all with running, jumping and playing like any other cat. Both Lauer and Evanna love to play with the laser pointer and can be engaged in pl a y w i t h other toys at times, too. In warmer weather, both cats would likely make excellent barn cats. For more information on one or both of these great cats, please visit “Adopt a Pet” on our website or call the shelter at (518)873-5000. We are closed to the public until further notice. Please call the shelter regarding adoptions, surrenders or any other questions that you may have. Please direct any questions to Pam Rock, Shelter Manager. ■

The decision was made by county Treasurer Michael Swan, and it was recently endorsed by the county Board of Supervisors. this year, concerns over COVID-19 has necessitated some changes, so instead of selling the bunnies—and thus putting club members and the community at risk of contracting and/or spreading this disease—the members decided to simply donate the chocolate goodies directly to each child in the BackPack Program. (The BackPack Program provides food for lower-income families within the school district, and is one of charities supported by the club.) Leftover bunnies will be given to the local food bank. Club members have also pledged extra financial contributions to help offset the cost of purchasing the confections. ■
