State pledges $2 million boost to Civic Center By Thom Randall

GLENS FALLS — New York State will be contributing $2 million towards various upgrades at the Glens Falls Civic Center, Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Jan. 9 to a cheering audience that filled the Civic Center’s Heritage Hall. The money will pay for new video scoreboards, new ice-hockey dasher boards, a new floor to sit atop the arena’s ice and removable floor seating for entertainment events and new arena lighting, Hochul said. “This civic center is so important to the sustainability and vitality of the region,” she said. “And we’re thrilled we can help.”

Hochul’s words prompted a standing ovation from the crowd. Welcoming Hochul to Glens Falls, state Sen. Betty Little noted that the civic center was important to families in the region — and since it was constructed in 1979, the venue sorely needed upgrades. She thanked Hochul for Gov. Cuomo’s prior grant of $675,000, which paid for a new LED video outdoor marquee sign that now advertises the center’s events, as well as improvements to the arena’s sound system. “It’s good the Governor realizes Glens Falls is in need of economic assistance,” she said. State Assemblyman Dan Stec also lauded the grant award as he shared his childhood >> Story Continued | pg. 5

No ice, no fears yet for LG By Christina Scanlon

LAKE GEORGE — Lake George Winter Carnival organizers aren’t panicking about the lack of ice on the lake, as nearly every event planned during the popular festival will still take place at alternative sites around the village. “Even though the weather report isn’t favorable, it’s okay. There are so many other activities,” said Nancy Nichols, carnival cochair. For those events, such as the outhouse races, Nichols said they’re working hand in hand with Mayor Robert Blais. It’s possible the races will be moved to the festival area. “We’re looking into making snow,” she said.

The last time the outhouse races were moved and snow was brought in was in 2012. Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel showed up to film the event. “Sometimes Mother Nature doesn’t like us, but I guess we did okay,” joked Nichols. The lake is largely unfrozen, with some of the smaller bays beginning to freeze. “It’s really not that unusual for this time of year,” said Nichols. She admitted she’s tuned out the weather reports. “The one thing we need to worry about is wind. As long as we don’t get that, we’ll be good. The wind breaks up any ice we do have,” she said. The carnival continues through every weekend in February, with the first weekend

Brant Lake ready for Winter Carnival return By Christina Scanlon

BRANT LAKE — A good eight inches of ice had solidified on Brant Lake as of last week and weather favorable for more ice formation was in the forecast. With that knowledge, organizers were confident that most, if not all, planned events would go on for the Brant Lake Winter Carnival set for Feb. 20. “We may adapt some activities that are snow dependent,” said Brandon Himoff, carnival chair.

“We’re more dependent on ice than snow,” he said, adding they lucked out with recent rain storms. “I’m looking at the woods, and we lost some snow, but it’s better than we expected.” Snow is needed, he said, for ice bowling and curling. “They need some snow to define the lines,” he said. The carnival returns for the fourth year, turning the work of a small number of volunteers and a modest budget into a real tourism draw and lots of family fun. >> Story Continued | pg. 2
