LAKE GEORGE — At 10 p.m. on a frigid night last year, Alyssa Sylvia of Lake George set up a folding chair in front of the entrance of Lake George High School, and plugged her electric blanket into a portable battery so she’d keep warm in her overnight vigil outside the school. Sylvia and her fiancee Kevin Kenny — nearby in their car — switched places every several hours through the night, so they’d both survive the cold. Sylvia and Kenny had a mission- to get the very first tickets issued to the Lake George Rachael Ray fundraiser to be held four weeks later. Their overnight vigil last year paid off, al-

though Sylvia didn’t get any sleep. For the second year in a row, they snagged some of the very first tickets available. This year, Sylvia and Kenny won’t be camping out on the school lawn — celebrity cook and talk show host Rachael Ray will not be holding her annual hometown fundraiser in 2017. Tuesday, Sylvia described her deep disappointment over the news that Ray, the school’s most famous alumnus, will not be holding court this year. “I’m really bummed out about it — The show was something to really look forward to,” she said this week. “We’ve made such good friends with other people waiting in line overnight.” >> See RAY | pg. 19

Ellsworth wins steer wrestling title Lawmakers react to budget By Thom Randall

Lots to like, lament in spending plan, say North Country lawmakers

LAKE GEORGE — Olin Ellsworth, 35, of Warrensburg has chosen an occupation that only the hardy would pursue. On a few dozen weekends through the year, Ellsworth rides a galloping horse towards a fleeing 550-pound steer, jumps off his horse, jams his feet into the dirt, wraps his arms around the charging beast’s horns, and twists hard to throw the animal off its feet — as quickly as possible. Expert rodeo cowboys do it in a few seconds — and Ellsworth, a steer wrestler since he was 14, has a reputation of being among the best in the bruising sport. Two weekends ago, he won the title of 2016 Steer Wrestling Champion of the First Frontier

QUEENSBURY — Lawmakers are now unpacking Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive budget, which he formally rolled out last week. The proposed $152.3 billion spending plan contains a number of heavy-duty proposals, including free state college tuition, deep investments in clean water

infrastructure and a $1 billion increase in public school education funding. “This year’s budget raises up the middle class and advances our progressive values, all while continuing our record of fiscal discipline,” Cuomo said. The plan also comes with a tax cut for middle and highincome earners, a measure the governor said would save six million households an average of $250 next year and $700 annually when fully effective. Other measures include voting reforms, legalizing ridesharing upstate and

broadening insurance coverage for drug treatment programs. Total state operations would clock in at $98.06 billion, which is under the state-mandated cap. The state is facing a deficit of $3.5 billion. Cuomo said the only way to bridge the gap is by a three-year extension of the so-called millionaires tax, which is scheduled to expire at the end of the year. “Frankly, we don’t have the resources to lose the millionaires’ revenue now and have this state function the way it >> See BUDGET | pg. 19
