Candidates declare for LG village posts

LAKE GEORGE Ñ Two incumbents and one challenger have to date announced their intention to run for two village board seats, according to municipal officials.

Ron Mogren, a landscape architect with Saratoga Associates has announced he is running for a board seat. He presently serves as chairman of the village zoning board of appeals.

Mogren is competing against incumbent Deputy Mayor John Earl, a village trustee since 1999, and Ray Perry, proprietor of PabloÕ s Burrito Cantina in Lake George. Perry has served as a trustee since 2007. Semiretired, Earl works seasonally as a state Department of Environmental Conservation employee.

The village mayor post is also up for a vote this year.

Both the mayoral and trustee positions have four-year terms.

Mayor Robert Blais is running for re-election, unchallenged at this point. He was first elected mayor in 1971, after serving since 1968 as trustee. Considered the longest serving mayor in New York CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Lake George HoJo’s restaurant reopens to warm welcome

thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE Ñ The iconic roadhouse Howard Johnson’s restaurant on Rte. 9 has received a warm welcome from a robust number of customers since its reopening Jan. 10, new proprietor John LaRock said this week.

Now named Lake George HoJo’s Family Restaurant, the eatery is now open daily from 7 a.m. for breakfast, continuing through 4 p.m. with lunch selections.

In about two weeks, the restaurant is to add dinner service, staying open into the evenings, LaRock said.

From that point on, HoJo’s is to feature the eatery’s famed Fish Fry specials, steaks, prime rib entrees, as well as what LaRock said will be the largest salad bar in Lake George.

Originally scheduled to reopen in September, delays were encountered in upgrading the heating system and refurbishing the restaurant, which had been closed for about three years.

Just recently, new kitchen equipment and new flooring throughout the restaurant has been installed. Renovations have included rebuilding the salad bar, equipping the eateryÕ s sunroom with high-top dining tables and refin-

ishing the woodwork.

LaRock said heÕ s bought new antiquestyle soda glasses and dishes for serving up the 28 flavors of ice cream concoctions for which Howard Johnson’s was renowned in the 1950s and 1960s.

The salad bar is to feature garden-fresh vegetables and fruit, as well as four varieties of soup, LaRock said. The salad bar is to be stocked from 4 p.m. onward.

The offerings of traditional American food will feature freshly prepared burgers and entrees featuring turkey roasted on site, he said.

The interior of the restaurant retains the chic 1960s look, with its original retro furnishings, including the vintage booths and counter service Ñ as well as standard table accommodations.

One of the restaurantÕ s initial offerings has been popular Ñ their breakfast special of two eggs, toast and home fries Ñ for merely $3.25. This bargain is available Monday through Friday.

LaRock said that as heÕ s circulated among the tables this week welcoming customers, heÕ s received quite a few compliments on the restaurant’s food, ambiance, and value. Ò People are saying itÕ s a friendly family restaurant where they can relax and have a good meal at a very reasonable price,Ó he said.

Former U.S. Rep. Bill Owens named to board of Arrow Financial, Glens Falls National GLENS FALLS — Following his stated intention to stay active in regional economic development work, former U. S. Rep. Congressman Bill Owens of Plattsburgh has been appointed to the Arrow Financial Corporation’s board. He was also appointed as a director of ArrowÕ s primary subsidiary bank, Glens Falls National Bank & Trust.

Owens represented New YorkÕ s 21st Congressional District from November 2009

through Dec. 2014.

Long-time local coach and former WCS Athletic Director Mary ann Bump smiled as she watched Erin, a three-sport athlete, charge down the floor.

“When she was a lot younger, I told Erin she was going to break her mom’s scoring record,” she said. “ She put in a lot of hours practicing as a little kid and it has paid off.”

Bump said that for many years, while ErinÕ s mother Ñ Warrensburg’s elementary principal — was routinely working long hours evenings and weekends in the school office, Erin was in the gym nearby shooting baskets.

After MondayÕ s game, Erin Langworthy talked about reaching her 1,000-point milestone. Ò It felt amazing Ñ the feeling is indescribable,Ó she said, adding that her first memory of organized basketball was playing as a second-grader under the guidance of WCS teacher Scott Smith, whoÕ s now also coaching the girls varsity team and serving as WCS Athletic Director.

Smith also offered his thoughts this week, noting that Langworthy, five-feet-five, has been a key player for years, both on offense and defense.

“She’s definitely a scorer, whether it’s hitting outside shots, driving to the basket, or at the foul line,” he said.

Smith added that Langworthy is now playing at her peak, propelling the Burghers to win their prior five games against tough competitors.

Last week, the Burghers beat Corinth 50-31 on Monday, defeated North Warren 49-33 on Wednesday, in addition to a 79-32 win over Whitehall on Friday. In that latter game, Langworthy scored her 46 points during only 24 minutes on the floor.

“We’re playing good basketball at this point — and the girls are excited,” Smith said. “Every player is doing their job well, whether it’s defense, rebounding or scoring.”

Langworthy is doing far more than scoring, Smith said.

In most of this yearÕ s games, sheÕ s been double-teamed, so sheÕ s been achieving plenty of assists, feeding the ball effectively to her teammates while under a lot of pressure, he said. Langworthy has also been tenacious on defense, forcing turnovers, and disrupting the rhythm of the opposing teamÕ s play. Ò SheÕ s been doing a good job in anticipating passes and getting steals,” he said.

Credits her teammates

Tuesday, Langworthy deferred credit to her teammates for setting screens, boxing out opponents, clearing the lane for her and making passes at opportune times so she could score. As of Jan. 13, the team was enjoying an 8-2 record.

the players were making sharp, accurate passes to Langworthy, anticipating her moves as she flew down the court.

Sophomore Britanny Frasier and Senior Liz Turner were making a lot of the savvy moves. All the players were aggressively grabbing rebounds and controlling the ball well on both sides of the court.

Praising all her teammates, Erin Langworthy mentioned these latter two. Ò Liz and I have been working together since the 7th grade, and we know exactly where each other is going to be on the floor,” she said. “Britanny is getting better and better anticipating where I’m going — we all are working well together.”

Wednesday, Smith praised Langworthy for devoting a decade of her life to the sport. Ò IÕ m so proud of her, sheÕ s worked so hard for this milestone of joining the 1,000-point club,” he said. “All her work paid off.”

He also noted Langworthy’s humility.

“She’s really humble — the first thing she did when she went to the locker room Monday night after the game, was to thank all her teammates for their support.”

As for the future, Langworthy may just be an even better ballplayer in the coming months and next year Ñ coaches note she is as dedicated as ever to improving her skills. Langworthy has been focusing particularly on adding to the range and consistency of her outside shot.

Reflecting on her career, Langworthy, 16 years old and five-feet-five, revealed what motivates her. Ò I really like the competitiveness of the game and the teamwork,” she said.

The upcoming race is not yet finalized — candidates are to file petitions for offices between Feb. 3 and Feb. 10. The two candidates with the most votes take office.

The date of the village election, officially set Jan. 12 by the village board, is from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday March 18. Appointed by the board Monday as election inspectors were Virginia Henry and Chris Molella.

In other business conducted at the Jan. 12 meeting, the board elected the following people to the combined village-town Occupancy Tax Committee, which is to evaluate applications for public funding of events in Lake George. Appointed to the committee were: Dave Mentor, owner of Country Inn & Suites and

LAKE GEORGE — With a goal of saving taxpayer money and boosting local quality of life, officials of the local school district, town and village are exploring the idea of developing a shared, centralized facility to consolidate all their motor-vehicle operations.

Village Mayor Robert Blais, Lake George Superintendent of Schools Patrick Dee and Dickinson met recently to discuss the feasibility and benefits of the concept.

Lake George Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson told the town board Jan. 12 that if the three public entities collaborated to build one centralized garage and shared equipment, tools and personnel expertise, all three would save tax money and increase efficiency. Ò This combined effort would really be a major step forward in achieving shared services,Ó Dickinson said, noting that the facility could even host the Lake George ambulance squad as well. “We’re going to pursue this actively.”

Dee and Dickinson said that a single centralized garage operation could likely be developed with substantial state and federal grant funding, because consolidation was now a top priority, particularly with state government.

Existing school garage is small, inefficient

Faced with the problems associated with the school district’s existing tiny, cramped historic garage on Mountain Avenue, Dee recently proposed the idea of a new shared facility to Blais and Dickinson.

Dickinson said that most all the school districtÕ s buses now need to be parked outside, rather than inside the garage out of the weather, because it is so small.

Dee and Dickinson also noted that the school buses must be specially equipped with custom pneumatic bladders in their springs, so they can be lowered substantially to drive underneath the raised garage door Ñ as the garage was built many decades ago built when buses were far smaller.

Dee noted that sharing staff mechanics and equipment, as well as using a common facility, would benefit area taxpayers. Ò ItÕ s important we get a facility thatÕ s appropriate Ñ and save our communities some money,Ó he said, noting that the centralize garage could theoretically be situated where the town highway garage is now located, or it could be developed on the spare acreage the school district owns adjacent to the elementary school.

Dickinson said the consolidated garage would likely be at least a 24-bay garage that could accommodate all the busses, highway plows and heavy equipment, in order to prevent inclement weather from deteriorating them.

“When you spend $100,000 or more on a truck or bus, they should be stored inside,” he said.

Dee said officials from the school, village and town are holding a follow-up meeting in early February to further explore the concept.

“This is in fledging stages now; we’re just initially talking about it,” he said.

“We plan to get additional information together, and we’re considering conducting a feasibility study to see if we can make this happen.”

Dee said that if the concept is indeed feasible and approved, the very soonest such a facility could be developed was in time for the 2016-17 school year.

Lake George School District Business Manager offered her thoughts.

“With all three entities in agreement, this could be a win-win situation for everybody,” she said. “We’re really excited about the idea.”

Also named were Mayor Blais, Lake George Town Supervisor Dennis Dickinson, village Trustee John Root and town board member Vinnie Crocitto.

The board also reviewed ideas for a potential local law restricting the sale of tobacco products. The law would require licensing of all retailers of tobacco products as well as electronic cigarettes, and ban such sales close to schools, parks, and recreation areas.

The law would also prohibit issuing such licenses to pharmacies or transient vendors.

New local legislation under review

In other business, the board: • endorsed the idea of a new local law that would allow the village, when considering contracts, to have leeway to approve contracts other than the lowest bidder, as long as there is a valid justification.

• announced the retirement of Gerri Sullivan from the Inter Exchange program, an independent entity that helps International workers get situated in the village.

• approved the retirement of village employee Evan Moulton, who works at the sewage treatment plant. Named to replace Moulton was Dennis Mitchell, who recently suggested that the village set up a skating rink behind the local high school. The rink is to be filled and in operation soon.

• approved an employee mileage reimbursement allowance from 57 cents to 57.5 cents per mile, according to IRS standards.

Village officials noted that considering the plunging gasoline prices, the IRS standard must based on old statistics.

• resolved to allow snowmobiles and ATVs to roam along streets in the village during February, as the Lake George Winter Carnival is conducted in all four weekends of the month, attracting a considerable number of motor-vehicle enthusiasts.

The next monthly village board meeting is to be held Monday Feb. 9.

Lake George Elementary School has caught the ‘Weatherbug’

maggie@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE- Mrs. Lockhart’s kindergarten class was hard at work reporting the weather on Friday morning. Libby Pape, the class’ student of the week, whipped through slides on the SmartBoard and dissected details regarding the real-time weather at 8:15 a.m. that morning.

Mrs. Lockhart’s class, as well as every other in the building, can access this data through new technology called the “Weatherbug”; a weather station lives on top of the schoolÕ s roof and transmits up to the minute information through the internet to monitors located in the elementary school’s office and the high school’s science department.

Lake George is one of 12 schools in the region that have received the Weatherbug stations thanks to a partnership with National Grid.

The electric company has underwritten the cost of 55 of these stations throughout New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island to enhance Ò STEMÓ (science, technology, engineering, and math) education.

Not only will the installation of this technology enhance studentsÕ connectivity to their curriculum and boost an interest in related subjects, but it will give faculty the ability to make informed decisions about school closings and delays as well as engaging in outdoor activities throughout the day. LGES Principal, Jim Conway, explained just how the technology works and what it is doing for the students and their studies. Ò It is about an eight foot high pole and on the top is an anemometer that measures the wind speed, a thermometer that measures the temperature, and a unit that measures precipitation, as well as barometric pressure,Ó said Conway. “That information gets relayed to a monitor in our office and all of that information is also online to which all of the classes have access to that link.”

Conway explained that the link is home to all types of graphs over the course of the past month that help students answer questions about weather patterns and changes. Ò Our classes all use the link because they

have the info right there and they know it is coming from our school which is pretty neat,Ó said Conway. Ò This project was a collaboration with National Grid because they have needs to know what the weather is at different locations and they really worked with us and they gather the info from this site that helps them as well. It was a great partnership and great opportunity for our kids that they are able to access this so

we really want to thank them.”

Hearing about the technology is one thing, but seeing it in action is a completely different story. Mrs. Lockhart’s class illustrated just how easily these advanced programs fit into their everyday studies. Lake George is almost a full one-to-one computing school, meaning every student has a device that is dedicated to them throughout the day and students who donÕ t will have that ability by next year. Grades that

currently donÕ t have a device assigned to them can utilize the computer lab or like Mrs.Lockhart’s class, their SmartBoard.

Mrs. Lockhart’s class sat cross-legged on a carpet, facing the large screen operated by their classmate, Libby. As her teacher asked her questions about the weather statistics on the board, Libby answered confidently and without hesitation.

“What’s the temperature today, Libby?” asked Mrs. Lockhart. “14.2 degrees,” said Libby.

Mrs. Lockhart then addressed the class as Libby swiped through various parts of the report.

“What is our forecast?” Mrs. Lockhart asked the group. “Part snowy and part sunny,” echoed the class.

“Here’s the big question”, said Mrs. Lockhart, “is it below or above the freezing point?” Ò Below,Ó the young meteorologists shouted in unison, citing the freezing point is 32 degrees.

The students then answered a series of questions about what to wear, to which one student said she would maybe wear three pairs of gloves, and if they could play outside that day, all using the information from the weather bug.

The class was able to point out where they were located on the map and concluded that they would be getting less snow in comparison to other areas in the county.

When the report was over, Libby manually changed the weather to snowy and the high temperature to 22 degrees, allowing the class to compare the weather to the day before. As they moved on from the weather, one student shouted that the temperature had already changed because as the day goes on the sun causes the temperature to rise. The real time data lit up the eyes of every student watching the screen, causing excitement in seeing the changes right before their eyes.

Principal Conway noted that different grades do different things with the technology but they all can utilize the resource in the classroom. Ò I think it is exciting to them because they can access information and also do amazing things presenting that information and then they spend time working together collaborating with using the technology, it is exciting-using technology is the world they grew up in,Ó said Conway.

About this time of year many are preparing to send in their taxes. This is just a friendly reminder that those needing to pay their ‘Town of Thurman & Warren County’ tax may choose to stop by the Town Hall and pay in person. If you choose to do that, the days and hours available to do so are Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday—Jan.16 and 23 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 31 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

A new addition has been made to the Thurman Town Hall—bookshelves filled of donated books for young children to read and enjoy! There are a variety of books for different age groups that include baby through early elementary. The books may be kept or returned and are free to use. Donations of books are happily accepted via a drop box labeled Ô Returns & DonationsÕ , also located in the Town Hall. Friends and family are highly encouraged to read to young children as in doing so results in a variety of positive outcomes in a childÕ s lifeÑ some of which include: increased vocabulary, imagination, as well as improved comprehension and grammar. On Campus civil engineering, received the N I Rea SponGabrielle Lebihan earns honors sored Scholarship and the Pratt & Whitney ROCHESTER — Gabrielle Lebihan of Brant Lake, has earned one of Nazareth CollegeÕ s Athlete of the Week Honors. LeBihan earned first-team Empire 8 Conference all-star honors for the second year in a row after placing second at the conference championship meet at Saratoga State Park. LeBihan covered the 3.04mile course in 17:56.5 and helped the Golden Flyers to a third-place finish in the team standings with 84 points.

LeBihan is a Junior communication and media major at Nazareth College and is competing in her second season as a Golden Flyer. She was Nazareth’s top runner in 2013 and earned firstteam Empire 8 Conference all-star honors.

Delongis receives scholarship

LYNDONVILLE, VT Ñ Camille Delongis of Athol was awarded the Robert E. Long Scholarship from Lyndon State College. The scholarship was established in 1982 in the memory of the fourth president of Lyndon. This award honors students who have completed at least two semesters at Lyndon and who have achieved a GPA of at least 3.75 with at least 12 graded credits. Delongis is a Junior majoring in Electronic Journalism Arts.

Our editorial board: Clearing the air

I

wrote my first editorial for Denton Publications 23 years ago. Since then I’ve put my name on hundreds of opinion pieces and been a part of dozens of editorial board positions. I was lauded for some, vilified for others.

IÕ ve learned not to let that get under my skin. I’ve always thought of it as fallout from the thought provoking process. Poke the bees nest enough and youÕ re bound to walk away with a couple welts.

An old editor of mine once told me that youÕ re not doing your job if youÕ re not angering someone with an opinion piece Ñ it comes with the territory.

In turn, the dialogue gates open and Ñ as our newly elected Congresswoman Elise Stefanik would say Ñ fresh new ideas spill forth as a result.

But in all that time, IÕ ve never been accused of hiding my name from view. I have and will continue to take credit for the columns I have personally written as well as the editorial board pieces I am a part of.

So when I read some of the recent letters regarding our editorial board being unnamed, I have to say it caught me off guard. I suppose in an organization our size, I took for granted that readers knew the Denton staff and, after decades of my pontificating, certainly knew me as managing editor.

Together, we make up the editorial board. Most of our names appeared in our Jan. 3 newspapers listing each of our New Year’s resolutions.

I have organized it this way for several years, and honestly up until a few weeks ago had not been called out on it. When a reader, official or source took issue with a board editorial, I was always the sounding board, encouraging further dialogue, letters and guest commentaries.

I have always taken responsibility for everything published in our newspapers, specialty products and magazines.

In the past, IÕ ve been involved in a handful of different editorial boards, each with its own unique makeup and different way of identifying board members.

Editorials written by a board are designed to allow input from a variety of viewpoints. They can be written by a member of the board or an outside individual with couching from the group.

vehemently disagreed with Ñ and been asked to write editorials contrary to my own opinion.

ItÕ s a lesson in temperament, but again comes with the territory.

Columns, on the other hand, are written by a sole individual and are the opinion of that person alone, such as the column you are currently reading written by yours truly.

I will say the recent letters calling us out for having an anonymous editorial board gave me pause for thought. That was not my intent and IÕ d like to clear the air about who we are and how we operate.

Our editorial board consists of staff members Maggie Morgan, Shawn Ryan, Lou Varricchio, Pete DeMola and Andrew Johnstone. Senior editors include myself and Keith Lobdell, Publisher Dan Alexander and retired editor Thom Randall continues to lend his years of expertise.

While free expression of opinion is a right in this country under the First Amendment, I am not one to do so behind a veil of secrecy. I welcome an open exchange of ideas from anyone provided it is done in a constructive manner.

IÕ m convinced thoughtful debate and compromise is what will move this country and this region forward.

Therefore, after consulting with our editorial team, we have decided that our board editorials will be signed each week by two senior managing editors, Keith and myself and Dan as publisher.

Ideas for opinion pieces will be formulated, a topic will be chosen, board members will be allowed to chime in on the topic and the actual writing of the piece will be assigned to a member of the board in rotation.

The board will then all get a final opportunity to read the piece before it goes to print.

We feel this is the most fair and balanced way to handle board editorials moving into the future.

In the meantime, my door is always open as is my willingness to hear from our readers about issues of importance that might make solid editorial fodder.

We certainly do not profess to know it all, and the more voices we get involved in this process, the more rounded and effective our opinions will be.

Turning Back the Pages

By Jean Hadden One Hundred Years Ago – January, 1915 Popular target for thieves

M.L. Messenger’s store on Upper Hudson Street, Warrensburgh, was entered by burglars Thursday night, Jan. 7, 1915 the second time. The thieves broke in through a rear window and carried away groceries and tobacco to the value of ten dollars.

Several weeks ago the store was ransacked and about twentyfive dollars worth of jewelry and groceries were taken. Previous to that time the store had been closed for several months and contained remnants of the stock of D.B. Logans, who formerly conducted it. Mr. Messenger recently replenished the stock with a line of groceries and re-opened the store to the public.

Back for a new trial

Among the decisions handed down Jan. 6, 1915 by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, in Albany, was one reversing the judgment of conviction in the case of the People against Attorney Frederick L. Hamilton, of Warrensburgh and Robert Holland of Wevertown, charged with conspiracy. The decision ordered the case sent back to the Warren County Court for a new trial.

Hamilton and Holland were indicted on a charge of having conspired to extort money from former Assemblyman William R. Waddell and Dr. James L. Fuller, of North Creek. They were tried before a jury in county court at Lake George and found guilty.

Judge Raley sentenced both men to a term in the Albany Penitentiary and they were committed to that institution.

Soon after the men were sent to Albany, Hamilton’s mother died and an appeal was taken before her burial in their behalf by Attorney C.P. Coyle. An appeal to grant their release under bail pending the outcome of the appeal was granted. The case will be tried at the next term of county court.

World news

The German ocean liner Vaterland was built and later launched April 13, 1911 in Hamburg, Germany and she took her maiden voyage on May 24, 1914. She was 289.55 long and carried 1,747 passengers on her first trip. That first voyage across the Atlantic was done in the remarkable time of exactly five days and seventeen hours. Her voyages across the Atlantic were halted when she eventually arrived in New York and a safe return trip to Germany was rendered questionable. Service was discontinued after July 14, 1914 because World War I had begun in Europe and the ship has since been was laid up in a shipyard in Hoboken, New Jersey.

(Note Ð The Vaterland, in her hay day, was the largest ocean liner in the world but was later superseded by the German ship SS Bismark. The ship remained immobile in the shipyard berth in Hoboken, New Jersey for three years. She was later seized by the United States shipping Board when the United States formerly entered World War I in June, 1917. She was renamed USS Leviathan. The ship could never seem to run at a profit and it was not uncommon for 700 or 800 passengers to be served by a crew of 1,200, with 400 stewards and 100 cooks, butchers and bakers to provide for their comfort. She was a “dry” ship and no liquor was served on board because of prohibition. The ship contained a large swimming pool and a magnificent ballroom.

The USS Leviathan sailed for the last time in January, 1938 on her way to the ship grave yard in Rosyth, Scotland. She was scrapped Feb. 14, 1938.

Davis gets the last word

White Lady Lake, in the Town of Thurman, formerly known by the less euphonious name of Bear Swamp Pond, has been a

bone of contention among certain residents of the neighborhood for some years and the cause of considerable litigation.

Isaac J. Davis, who acquired by purchase the land upon which the lake is situated, has been forced to establish his title and has done so by a recent decision of a competent court. Failing in their efforts to wrest from him his legal rights, certain people, Mr. Davis asserts, have sought to establish their right to fish in the lake because, they have maintained, its waters were stocked by the state.

State Fish Culturist Tarleton H. Bean has sent Mr. Davis a letter, which he presented in court, stating that there is no record in his office stating that the lake has ever been stocked with fish by the state and their would be if this had ever been done. He further states that no person has the right to trespass on Mr. Davis’ private property as he has by no means opened up his property pond to public fishing. Mr. Davis believes that he has been persecuted by some of his neighbors and now that his rights have been clearly defined he intends to maintain them at all hazards.

Dealing with our readers

Day after yesterday a perfectly nice lady called us up here at the Warrensburgh News and with tears in her voice reproved us for not mentioning the fact that she had a friend visiting her last week. We told her that she had not let us hear anything about it and therefore we did not know she had a visitor. Then she said, “Well, you should have known. I thought that you were running a newspaper.” Wouldn’t that rattler your slats?

Dear lady, editors are human, or at least almost human. If Johnnie falls and breaks his arm, if your husband chops his toe instead of a stick of wood, if anything happens that makes you glad, or sad, happy or mad, call us up and tell us about it. That’s the way to get it in the newspaper.

Insurance lessens pain

Joseph Hoffman, employed at the Warrensburgh Woolen Mill, caught one of his fingers in a machine there on Monday morning, Jan. 25, 1915 and the member was badly mangled. He will be out of work for some time. Young Hoffman will be a beneficiary of the new workman’s compensation law.

Former local pastor deceased

The Rev. Herbert A. Wood, a former pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in Warrensburgh from 1896 to 1901, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1915 at his home at East Quogue, Long Island.

The remains were brought to Albany and the funeral was held in the chapel of the Albany Rural Cemetery. The Rev. Lyman D. Cook, also a pastor of the local village church, now of Grace Church, Albany, conducted the services. Rev. Wood leaves a widow and two nephews, Frank and John Wood.

World news

On Jan. 19, 1915, Germany began an areal bombing campaign against the British using Zeppelins. (Note – A Zeppelin, named for Count Zeppelin, the inventor, was a cigar-shaped, long range dirigible.)

Poison gas was used for the first time in World War I, on Jan. 31, 1915, as the Germans on the eastern front attacked Russian positions west of Warsaw, Poland. Although the Germans fired 18,000 gas shells, they had little effect on the Russians as frigid temperatures prevented the gas from vaporizing.

Happy New Year! Many a man turns over a new leaf one day

In 1914 there were 140 clear days as opposed to the normal number of ninety-six. The average temperature of the year was 47.2 degrees. Lake George froze over this year on Jan. 7, 1915.

Damage estimated at $150 was caused the afternoon of Jan. 24, 1915 in Isador Yaffee’s taylor shop, in Glens Falls, when a pressing table took fire from a hot iron which had been left on the table, It was just one year and seven months ago, June 22, 1913 that a lovely baby girl, Susan Mary D’Amico, was born to Panfilo and Marghertia D’Amico, in Italy. (Note – Susan Mary Nicodemo, 101, the widow of Albert F. Nicodemo, died Dec. 10, 2014, in Argyle, New York.)

Warrensburgh was represented at the automobile show in New York City this year by Charles and Eva Burhans, T.J. Lynch, Charles E. Wheeler and Bertram E. Murray.

The funeral services of the late William Murphy, of Friends Lake, held at the Catholic Church in Chestertown, Friday morning, Jan. 4, 1915, was in point of attendance, one of the largest visible expressions of regret over a citizenÕ s demise that has been manifested hereabouts.

A surprise party was given Leo Smith, Friday evening, Jan. 1, 1915, at The Pines, his home on Third Street, five young men being present. Mr. Smith, who spent the holiday vacation here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry L. Smith, returned to Schenectady on Monday to resume his studies at Union College. (Note – This former Warrensburgh rooming house is on the north corner of Third Street and Hudson Street.)

Miss Margery Rice, daughter of Philip E. and Pearl Thomson Rice, of Warrensburgh, entertained six of her little friends on Monday afternoon, Jan. 11, 1915, at a party in honor of her sixth birthday anniversary. (Note – Margery Rice was later to become Mrs. Margery Sherman. The former Rice home is today the Cornerstone Victorian bed and breakfast at 3921 Main Street, the present home of Doug and Louise Goettsche.)

Thomas Brannon, of Stony Creek, has moved into Edward BarberÕ s house at South Johnsburgh while he is drawing logs from the foot of Crane Mountain to The Glen.

It was just fifteen years ago, Jan. 3, 1900 that the Warrensburgh Woolen Mill, on Milton Avenue started making men’s work pants.

Just one year ago, Jan. 10, 1913, the Union scale for a carpenter officially became 37 and a half cents an hour.

It was just one year ago, Jan. 26, 1913, that Henry F. Turner opened a new barber shop in the Idle Hour Pool Room. (Note – This would be where Jack Toney’s IGA store is now located.)

Miss Helen M. Straight, of Warrensburgh, has enrolled as a student at Albany Business College. Miss Edith Finkle, of Bolton, is attending the Glens Falls High School. Harry Floyd, of Adirondack, manages his fatherÕ s farm and cares for sixteen head of cattle and thirty sheep.

The fifteen-cent supper given at the St. Sacrament rectory in Bolton Landing was a great success. The net proceeds were about $25 and there was a large attendance and everybody had a good time.

How could you have known?

To the Adirondack Journal: How could you have known, Dan, that your spot-on admonishment of your own publicationÕ s ill-advised editorial savaging of Protect the Adirondacks would be so timely? Your piece had a time of its own, the days following publication of the Denton Editorial BoardÕ s ad hominem attack upon Peter Bauer. Your position was clear. Scurrilous accusations which close, rather than open, the debate of ideas and sensibilities our democracy requires to function as it has always been meant to function, will not be tolerated here. Kudos to you; applause for Denton PublicationsÕ restoring civility and truly free speech to the ongoing great conversation that is our country’s strength and legacy. Congratulations for your largesse, your sense of fair play, your allowing Protect the Adirondacks to defend itself in the very space where it was recently vilified.

Thank you for restoring a sense of pride in what it means to be a citizen of this great country.

But how could you have known how prescient your action would be? You couldn’t have known, and yet I believe you knew all the while. Before Charlie Hebno was brutally and mercilessly attacked in Paris these few days past for no crime other than the exercise of freedom of speech, you knew what was at stake. You understood that the line between savagery Adirondack-style and Islamic terrorist-style may be finer than we like to think. You have unequivocally said that we will not tolerate eviscerating our opponents here, and the whole world, or at least major portions of it, has said the same about Muslim fanaticism anywhere it shows its face. Je suis Charlie!

You, Dan, and those who think like you, are our ultimate bulwark against the forces of intolerance and bigotry both at home and abroad. You should today be even prouder of yourself than you might have been yesterday. You can’t imagine how thrilled I am to be living at the same time as you, in a moment of grave danger for the liberties we have learned to cherish. Thank you again and again for standing up and being

counted. If you ever travel to my piece of Adirondack heaven, let me buy you a beer, maybe two or three. I’ve much more I’d like to discuss with you.

Supers ‘irresponsible’ To the Adirondack Journal: The Essex County Board of Supervisors support of this paperÕ s editorial call for banning Protect The Adirondacks is hugely irresponsible.

These are the political leaders of our county.

To silence a voice that one disagrees with or finds offensive is a first step toward a mindset that could justify the attacks in Paris last week.

I only sometimes agree with Protect, and often find its message offensively delivered, but It has every right in this country to pursue its agenda.

By denying this, the Board of Supervisors has set a terribly destructive example.

Supers should represent all To the Adirondack Journal: After reading the enlightened guest editorial in your Jan. 10 issue condemning your earlier editorial that called for abolishing Protect the Adirondacks because of its opposition to the Adirondack Club & Resort project in Tupper Lake, I was happy to read Dan Alexander’s apology on the same page.

But then, what a shock it was to read the article on page 14 in your same issue, about the Essex County Board of Supervisors voting unanimously to support the original editorial for which your paper wisely apologized.

Brian Mann reported on North Country Public Radio that the Board of Supervisors will meet again on this matter, so I hope they will also take a more enlightened position now.

Perhaps they were fooled by the pseudo-populist rhetoric in that disgraceful editorial. They need to show that they really do represent all of us, not just the special interests of rich developers.

Shameful votes like that one are the reason why so many Americans now distrust politicians.

The Board needs to acknowledge that Protect the Adirondacks does far more good than harm, for the majority of us. The same goes for the APA. Allen Fitz-Gerald, Jay

Freedom of press To the Adirondack Journal: We join the rest of the world in mourning the brave staff of the magazine Charlie Hebdo, gunned down by religious fanatics for defending freedom of the press.

Meat industry fanatics in the U.S. have devised a more subtle means of stifling freedom of the press. The states of Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, and Utah have enacted Ò ag-gagÓ laws that impose criminal penalties on investigators seeking to expose animal abuses and safety violations in factory farms.

According to an Associated Press report in yesterdayÕ s papers, four members of an animal protection organization were charged with violating Utah’s ag-gag law. They sought to document the daily transport of thousands of pigs from the infamous Circle Four factory farm in Cedar City (UT) to the Farmer John slaughterhouse in Los Angeles.

Ag-gag laws are clearly unconstitutional and are being challenged in federal courts. Assaults on press freedom need to be confronted wherever they rear their ugly heads, even when they assume the legitimacy of a state law.

Protect what?

To the Adirondack Journal: When I think of protecting the Adirondacks, many problems and questions come to mind regarding our Adirondack communities including; employment, resident retention, economic viability, sustainability, the environment, and our future. Does PROTECT cater to all of the above in an unbiased way? What are they trying to protect and from what or whom?

Do we need protection from them? Here are some thoughts to consider. The Adirondacks have had many challenges and will have many challenges to face. By default, we have designed our economy around a playground for spending disposable income and a place to retire. There is little industry left here, and we have become a service based economy catering to recreation, lodging, and food. This economy isn’t conducive to great business plans with steady stable returns or successful independence. It tends to represses our work force with seasonal, weather dependent, economy driven, lower paying jobs. Many residents leave for better opportunities and never come back. We have also limited our chance of a better economy and future by enacting and upholding out of date and irresponsible preservation clauses and ideas about our state holdings within the park called forever wild. PROTECT’s stance on state land use and private land use is selfish and biased because they represent the land use ideals of a minority within the park or state. For some towns, state Forever Wild holdings dominate private ownership and this limits business opportunities and potential jobs in the surrounding area through limited resources. This increases local taxes on private properties and decreases income for remaining private landowners and encourages them to develop and liquidate their land to create a short term profit while getting rid of a tax and investment liability. For example, conservation on state lands would be a better choice by creating working forests that support our local communities with sustainable jobs and tangible products produced for local use and export. The now active land would be self supporting and even revenue generating therefore stimulating local towns. Conservation includes recreation and in many cases enhances recreation. Good Conservation also enhances the quality and protection of our environment (Hey PROTECT, we donÕ t even maintain fire roads anymore on forest preserve)! You want to fight something, how about potential forest fires. By the way, the people of New York State pay the tax burden and many other associated costs on this state land and that includes us one way or another (the state just writes the check) All the citizens should be represented equally including those that live here. The Adirondacks are for residents, vacationers, snowmobilers, ATV riders motor boaters, businesses, skiers, birdwatchers, fisherman, environmentalists, and all others as long as they respect each other.

It should be an even playing field for all. There should be a more diverse viable economy within the blue line that attracts successful entrepreneurs and businesses. What are you really trying to protect, the land, the environment, the people, the economy, or the swayed interests of your supporters. It’s time for PROTECT the Adirondacks to rethink your goals, to represent and respect all of us, and actually make a positive difference. How about protecting our future?

Blotter Sheriff’s make DWI arrest

LAKE GEORGE — The Warren County Sheriff’s Office has released Incident Number 15-27. The type of incident was property damage motor vehicle accident and aggravated driving while intoxicated Thursday, Jan. 1. At approximately 12:45 p.m. a 2005 Honda CRV, driven by Korey A White, age 22, of Hudson Falls was Southbound on State Rte. 9N in Lake George in route to the annual Polar Plunge, when he veered off the roadway sheering off a utility pole and then overturning. White was not injured but was found to be intoxicated, and his BAC was determined to be a .24. White was charged with aggravated DWI and other traffic violations and released pending prosecution in Lake George Town Court. Patrol Officer Lopez investigated the accident.

Sheriff’s office make DWI arrest

LAKE GEORGE — The Warren County Sheriff’s Office has released Incident Number 2015-000008. The type of Incident was a DWI Arrest Thursday, Jan. 1. Andrew L. Zambrano, 27, of Granville was arrested for Aggravated DWI (blood alcohol over .18) after a 2 a.m. traffic stop on State Rte. 9. Zambrano’s BAC was .21 percent, he was released with an appearance ticket for DWI along traffic citations for failure to keep right, following too closely, and unlicensed operation. The arrest was made by patrol officer R.Grimaldi.

Teen arrested for marijuana sale

HORICON — On Monday, Jan. 12, The Warren County Sheriffs Office arrested Isaiah A. Russo, 16, of Horicon for Criminal Sale of Marihuana in the 2nd degree after a police investigation determined Russo had sold marihuana to a 15 year old male.

Russo was arraigned in the Chestertown Court and released to appear at a later date. The case was handled by Patrol Officer R. Swan.

DEC Forest Rangers answer call LAKE GEORGE Ñ The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers respond to search and rescue incidents statewide. In Warren County in the Lake George Wild Forest, a call was placed Thursday, Jan. 1, at 5:15 p.m. about distressed hikers. DEC Ray Brook Dispatch received a request for assistance from four hikers who were near the summit of Prospect Mountain and were unprepared for the conditions. Dispatch gave the hikers, a 55-year-old male, a 55-year-old female, a 25-year-old female and a 22-year-old female, all of Macungi, PA, directions to Prospect Mountain Road.

Two DEC Forest Rangers on snowmobiles traveling up the road, located the hikers at 6:47 p.m. and transported them down the mountain to the parking lot. They were evaluated and released at 7:17 p.m.

In brief LGLC now accepting applications

BOLTON LANDING Ñ The Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) is now accepting applications for two Stewardship Assistant positions. The positions are full time but temporary, to be filled late May through mid to late August.

The Stewardship Assistants will work together and primarily conduct field work, including trail maintenance and new trail construction, boundary posting, and monitoring of conservation easement properties. They will also lead public hikes and educational outings, and assist other staff as needed with summer events.

Should local knowledge, experience and training make it appropriate, one Stewardship Assistant will be offered the position of Lead Stewardship Assistant and will be given additional leadership responsibilities.

MOAS to hold dinner to go to Washington

NORTH WARREN — North Warren’s Model Organization of American States class is holding their annual dinner Saturday, Jan. 17, at North Warren Central School. This dinner is to raise funds for a trip to Washington in April. They will be serving a classic baked ziti, and a vegetarian ziti, along with fresh garden salad, rolls and desserts. There will be an auction for Pies by Surprise. After dinner there will be music on demand and karaoke through the years. MOAS, is a college course offered through Plattsburgh State.

Each year the students are given a different country to represent, currently the students have two, El Salvador and Paraguay. In Washington, the class will meet with the ambassadors from these countries to get a better understanding of the countriesÕ roles and positions in the hemisphere/OAS. The students will continue to work for half the year writing resolutions and speeches to propose at the high school model held in June.

College for Every Student search for schools

ESSEX — A national nonprofit, College For Every Student (CFES), is searching for five schools to participate in a high-impact program that will help low-income students become college and career ready. The five schools will receive Closing the Gap awards through support from private donors. Ò Over the last 30 years, the gap in college going and degree attainment between youth from low-income households and their higher income peers has widened steadily,” said CFES president and CEO Rick Dalton. “Today wealthy students are ten times more likely to earn a college degree than their classmates from poverty. Unless we close this gap, the consequences will be catastrophic.”

CFES, which has helped 75,000 low-income students from 700 schools become college ready over the last 24 years, has committed to scale up and help one million low-income youth attain college degrees by 2025. Ò The Closing the Gap awards are part of this commitment,Ó said Dalton.

Educators, volunteers, and other partners who work with CFES Scholars receive ongoing professional development in building their program and they become part of a supportive global network. Ninety-nine percent of CFES Scholars graduate from high school and 95 percent attend college.

Every CFES Scholar engages in three high-impact practices – Mentoring, Leadership Through Service, and Pathways to College. Research has shown these practices develop The Essential Skills, including raised aspirations, adaptability, grit, resilience, teamwork, leadership, and other competencies that promote social and educational uplift. QUEENSBURY — The Warren County Association of Realtors Inc. recently honored Thomas “Tom” Van Aernem, Broker/ Owner, Van Aernem Realty & Associates as its 2014 Realtor of The Year.

Van Aernem has been an active Realtor since 1988 when Van Aernem was started, and became Broker/Owner in 1989. In 2012 Van Aernem merged with Ambassador Associates, and Van Aernem Realty & Associates was founded. He has been a dynamic member of the Warren County Association of Realtors and Warren County Multiple Listing Service as well as the National Association of Realtors and the New York State Association of Realtors. He has been an active leader with both board of directors serving as a director and as President. Van Aernem has served the last 10 Years as a Village Trustee Member of the Village Board in addition to Deputy Mayor for the same time period. He is a member of St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s Church of Hudson Falls Parrish Financial Council and the Hudson Falls American Legion Post.

Capitol Region to hold gun show

While most items are for sale on a cash basis, Gun Shows cling to the old fashioned trade and barter way of doing business. Haggling for the best deal possible is both expected and

accepted. Old and unwanted guns gladly purchased by our collectors who will pay top prices. Winter Carnival activities announced

BRANT LAKE — The Brant Lake Winter Carnival said that over $1,000 has been raised to date for the Out House Race prizes and all businesses are invited to enter. The Downhill Derby is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 14, and they’d like to have more events throughout the week so anyone with ideas let them know.

More teams are needed for snow shoe softball and the broom ball tournaments so any groups interested, let them know. In addition to the fry pan toss, curling, out house races, childrenÕ s sledding hill, and ice bowling. There will also be an icicle contest with adult and children winners. People need to bring their longest icicle. Also new this year is a competition amongst local business and/or groups to get the most votes for their nominated King and Queen. It is $1 per vote and the most votes win bragging rights and a crown so vote for their favorite King and Queen at local establishments and/or organizations.

Library to host bird house building

CHESTERTOWN — The library will hold its annual bird house building craft Sunday Jan. 25, at 1 p.m. This a free event

QUEENSBURY — The EDC Warren County President Ed Bartholomew has announced that EDC Warren County has invited four regional leaders to speak at its Outlook 2015 breakfast meeting Friday, Jan. 30, at the Great Escape Lodge. The four speakers will be Terry Coomes, Publisher, The Post-Star; Joseph DeVivo, President & CEO, AngioDynamics; Kristine Duffy, Ed.D., President, SUNY Adirondack., and Thomas J. Murphy, CPA, President & CEO, Arrow Financial Corporation and Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company.

Each leader will address trends in the industry he or she represents, and then the panel will answer questions from the audience. The public is invited to attend the breakfast for $25 per person, via online registration at edcwc.org or by calling 761-6007.

4-H Guide Program seeks youth

WARRENSBURG — The 4-H Adirondack Guide Program orientation meeting will be held Thursday, Feb. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at Cornell University Cooperative Extension Education Center, 377 Schroon River Rd. The 4-H Adirondack Guide Program is an exciting and unique program open to boys and girls, 12 to 18 years old, who would like to explore, in depth, natural resource related topics. The program gives teenagers an opportunity to gain knowledge in the biological sciences, and develop outdoor leadership skills. Participants advance from the Beginner Guide level, through Intermediate, to full Advanced 4-H Adirondack Guide status. Activities include field trips and classes, canoe and camping trips, and community service projects. Topics taught include map and compass reading, canoeing, tree and wildlife identification, camping safety and survival skills, first aid training, and environmental career exploration.

‘Trophy Husbands’ set to perform

Pre-licensing courses revealed

QUEENSBURY Ñ The New York State pre-licensing course Feb. 6, March 6, April 17, May 29, and June 19, at the Queensbury High School room #109 at 4 p.m. The fee will be $40 residents and $50 non-residents. Music festival performers announced

LAKE GEORGE — The Lake George Music Festival Winter Concert takes place Saturday, Feb. 7, and Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Caldwell Presbyterian Church, 71 Montcalm St. This is the first annual Winter Concert Series. They will be featuring musicians from the Yale School of Music, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Admission is “Pay What You Can” with a suggested amount of $10 per person, per concert. The venue is expected to fill up quickly, people are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes early. Saturday at 7 p.m.

Cold weather puts ‘em on ice T

he recent cold snap and heavy snowfall has certainly helped to firm up ice conditions across the region. It also provided a big payday for local plumbers who were very busy thawing out frozen pipes for the past week or so.

For many North Country residents, the sudden reappearance of the Little Ice Age was not a really a welcome occurrence.

It has been especially hard on commuters, where the combination of icy roads and rock hard car seats, was nearly as uncomfortable as slashes squirting through the windshield washers, while they were searching for the jumper cables.

Just remember, it will all be over in just a few months, and there will be nothing to worry about except frost heaves, blackflies and a lot of slow moving tourists who are trying to find where the gates to the park are.

However, for many hardwater anglers, the big chill was a thrill, and a time for celebration. The cold spell really helped to setup the local ice, as evidenced by the loud moans, groans, booms, pops and rumbles that could be heard emanating from the lakes and ponds throughout the evening. I expect local pond hockey enthusiasts were the only other folks celebrating the cold.

Although snow cover remains somewhat meager in certain areas, there is still plenty to be found in the upper elevations, and across the northern and western portions of the Adirondacks, due to a series of recent lake affect storms.

Currently, the snow cover is just about ideal for ski-skating across the ponds, especially in the St. Regis Canoe Area, where the many ponds are connected by canoe carries that offer a pleasant mix of flat terrain and rolling hills that are covered with stands of towering white pines and open hardwoods.

Rock and Iceheads Return to the Valley

In other local news, the local cliffs and ice flows will again covered with climbers as The Mountaineer and Adirondack Rock and River will present the 19th annual Adirondack International Mountaineering Festival on Martin Luther King weekend, January 16th through January 19th, 2015.

Fix the dam and raise the salmon

DEC recently issued a News Release regarding a draft review for their plans to modify the old Imperial Paper Mill dam located on the Saranac River in Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh is one of only a few cities in North America with the potential to enjoy a major salmon run that occurs directly through the downtown area.

Unfortunately, the riverÕ s potential has never been fully realized due to the the difficulty salmon have in passing over an old, dilapidated dam that is located only a few miles upstream from the Big Lake.

DEC is seeking to inform the public and gather input on the preliminary plan addressing the Imperial Dam’s safety issues. “DEC’s plan will protect people that live, work and travel downstream of the dam. The proposal will also provide access to nine miles of upstream habitat for salmon and trout, while continuing to serve as a barrier to breeding sea lamprey.

A public availability session on the preliminary plan will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at the Town of Plattsburgh Town Hall at 151 Banker Road. Staff from DEC and its consulting firm will present information on the preliminary plan for the dam and the process for moving the project forward.

DEC will also answer questions and accept comments from the public. The meeting facility is wheelchair accessible. Please provide any requests for specific accommodation in advance to DEC at 518897-1248.
