WARRENSBURG — When the Warrensburg Central school board met Nov. 22 to review policies and long-range planning, Superintendent of Schools Tim Lawson suggested to the board they might want to again review merging Warrensburg’s interscholastic sports programs with Bolton Central School District.

Particularly at issue was girls volleyball, which at Warrensburg has been suffering from declining enrollment, the team has been struggling to remain competitive.

After much discussion last spring on a potential merger for volleyball, it was decided Warrensburg should continue with its stand-alone program.

But Nov. 22, athletic director Steve Nolan repeated his observations that it was difficult to recruit enough students from Warrensburg to field a team, but merging with Bolton would provide more athletic opportunities for students while making a joint team competitive.

Also, by combining sports programs with Bolton, the two schools could have an all-girls soccer team and an all-boys soccer team — while other teams could be gender inclusive, he said.

“We need to draw a line as to what we can afford,” Nolan said, referring to the school district’s budget for sports programs.

Board members expressed interest in exploring shared services, and Nolan and Lawson pledged to research options on merging sports programs so information on the issue can be presented to the public during the coming year.

In other business at the Nov. 22 meeting, school board vice president Dean Moore also mentioned his concern over the issues of communication the current board of education is facing. Moore said he would like all school board members to have their e-mail address accessible to all. A majority of board members said they had no problem posting their e-mail addresses or sharing information with the public. Several on the panel said with the 2011-12 budgeting process approaching, it’s important for all board members to share information with each other and the public. Not sharing e-mail addresses, they said, might present a problem. The issue was tabled since unanimity on the matter could not be reached.

InBrief Breakfast with Santa at Caldwell Presbyterian LAKE GEORGE — On Saturday Dec. 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Caldwell Presbyterian Church will be conducting their annual Breakfast with Santa event.

Last of Mohican drama to expand showings in new venue

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — The Last of the Mohicans outdoor drama, envisioned by many to develop into a major regional tourist attraction, will be expanding both its number of shows and audience capacity this summer as it moves to a new venue at Wild West Ranch off Bloody Pond Rd. The site change is occurring amid a continuing effort toward launching a large-scale permanent production housed in its own dedicated theater, drama founder Michael Dufault told county leaders recently.

The debut of the drama last year in the courtyard of Fort William Henry over several days drew sellout crowds as it wowed audiences.

This first full-length production of the outdoor drama was complete with cannon and musket fire, characters bearing fiery torches, Native American drumming and dancing, live horses, and special effects including pyrotechnics.

Dufault gave a presentation to the Warren County Board of Supervisors Nov. 19, lobbying for continuing support of the drama through county occupancy tax funding.

Dufault said that with the move to Wild West Ranch, the Mohican drama will be expanding from a run of six performances in 2010 to between 14 and 17 in 2011. The cast will expand from 18 to 24 actors, and the size, scope and realism of the production will increase, he said.

“We want to do it bigger, better and longer in 2011,” he said.

The outdoor setting at the ranch, also offers a more expansive performance space, allowing for more special effects, and more horses, he said.

Dufault and the other board members of the Mohican drama’s sponsoring non-profit organization are planning for the drama to expand into a major permanent offering with 50 shows or more within several years, Dufault said.

This growth would be a major step toward developing into a major national attraction, like “Tecumseh” in central Ohio or “Lost Colony” in North Carolina, two productions which draw hundreds of thousands of tourists annually for summer-long runs of nightly performances.

The drama, written by Dufault — an actor, playwright and director — is based on James Fenimore’s classic book by the same name.

Dufault has been working on nurturing the drama production for nearly nine years.

A study conducted by the Outdoor Drama Institute of the University of North Carolina estimated that a fully-developed Last of the Mohicans outdoor drama in Warren County could sell $743,120 annually worth of tickets, draw visitors from across the nation, and boost the region’s economy by $7 million to $10 million annually while creating eight full-time and 65 to 75 seasonal jobs.

Although Dufault’s efforts to have a $1.2 million permanent theater built with Warren County governmental funding was considered but shelved by county officials several years ago, Dufault is not wavering in his quest towards his goal of a major permanent production with an 8- to 10-week run.

He’s now seeking private and grants and sponsorships to bankroll the show until it

In 2009, the drama production received a $20,000 grant from county occupancy tax receipts, and $10,000 of occupancy tax funds channeled through the town of Lake George.

Attack on Warrensburg woman alleged

Retirement dinner set for Pastor Leonard

WARRENSBURG — A recent late-night break-in and attack of a woman in her Warrensburg home — including attempted strangulation while she was in bed— has prompted felony charges of first-degree Burglary and second-degree Strangulation, police said.

Brian T. MacDuff, 31, of Louise Lane, Queensbury, was arrested and arraigned on the charges shortly after the incident. MacDuff faces additional charges of fourth-degree Criminal Mischief and 3rd degree Assault, both Misdemeanors.

Police say that at about 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 27, MacDuff entered the home of a female acquaintance and struck her with his fists while she was asleep. When she attempted to call authorities from her cell phone, MacDuff took the phone and threw it, police said.

MacDuff then strangled the woman, causing injuries to her neck, according to the Warren County Sheriff ’s office. A male resident of the home interrupted the assault, causing MacDuff to flee the scene, but the suspect was arrested a short time later while still in the area.

The incident was investigated by Warren County Sheriff ’s Patrol Officers Haley Grace and Scott Phillips, and Investigator Chris Hatin.

Warrensburgh Museum plans events

Christmas Concert at St. Cecilia’s

The Warrensburgh Museum of Local History will be open Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4 and 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., coinciding with the Christmas in Warrensburgh fest. Light refreshments will offered.

The museum is “Dressed for the Holidays” including not only holiday decorations, but a display of holiday clothing complete with capes and muffs and overcoats. A special exhibit features vintage Lionel Train trackside accessories — on loan from a local collector.

On Saturday, Dec. 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., local history buff John Hastings will be signing his popular book Around Warrensburg. The edition is chock full of local historic photos and postcards. Other books are also available at the Museum for holiday shopping, along with the Warrensburgh Historical Society’s 2011 Calendar featuring entertainment scenes from Warrensburg’s past.

The museum and its “book nook” will continue to be open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays through the holiday period.

Entrance to the Museum is at the rear of the VFW Building, 3754 Main St. Admission is always free. The museum is fully accessible for those with physical challenges.

Courtly Music is presenting a holiday concert of acoustic recorder music at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec 4, in Saint Cecilia’s church. Selections include tunes from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Admission is free all are welcome.

Police: Woman chops up victim’s boots, steals possessions, then threatens her Warrensburg Town Court report Nov. 17 — Judge Mindy Fisk presiding • Mariah L. Balk, 20, of River Street, Warrensburg, was charged with second-degree burglary, a felony based on an incident Oct. 15 at about noon. Police said she unlawfully entered a River Street residence and took items belonging to a female. The items stolen were personal clothing and footwear, two iPods, a camera and a set of Sharpie markers, altogether worth about $850. Police said the victim saw Mariah Balk brag on the “Stickam” Web site she had stolen her property and would burn it, and there was nothing the victim could do about it.

Balk is also charged with criminal mischief, a misdemeanor, for cutting the victim’s $60 black stiletto boots into pieces, according to police. Balk is also charged with the misdemeanor of second-degree aggravated harassment for telling the victim to go kill herself, and if she didn’t commit suicide, Balk would kill her, or “make her disappear,” according to police. An order of protection was issued to block Balk from any contact with the victim. Balk is also charged with petit larceny in connection with the alleged burglary.

Balk was re-arraigned and committed to Warren County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail, and the case was referred to a Grand Jury.

• Harley Pryme, 24 pleaded guilty to second-degree harassment in full satisfaction of the charges in connection with an Oct. 16 incident on Horicon Avenue. Police said Pryme ripped the bedroom door off a victim’s wall and broke it in half, then threw it against another door and into a wall, causing damage to the man’s apartment. Police also said he threatened the man with physical harm while chasing him out of his home. He was sentenced to 15 days in Warren County jail.

• The case of Burton R. Karson was adjourned to Dec. 21.

He is charged with violating probation on a 2007 charge of DWI-alcohol/drugs. The Warren County Probation Depart-

ment lodged the charge after a random drug screening of Karson conducted in March tested positive for cocaine.

• The case of Leah M. Printy, 37, of County Route 29, Olmstedville, was rescheduled for Dec. 1. She is facing a felony charge of driving while intoxicated based on a traffic stop 3:20 a.m. Oct. 31 on River Street after making an improper left-hand turn. She is also charged with illegal consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle. Her blood alcohol level tested 0.14 in a breath test, court records say.

• Pauline V. Buckler, 49, of Ridge Avenue, Warrensburg, pleaded guilty to DWI. She was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge and ordered to have an ignition interlock installed and operating for one year. She faces a fine and surcharge totaling $900, and was ordered to attend a victim impact panel, plus she had her license revoked for six months.

She was ordered to pay restitution to a gas station for $139, where she had caused damage just prior to her arrest. She had originally been charged with leaving the scene of an accident and aggravated DWI as well as DWI, based on an Aug. 28 incident, when she was stopped after the collision, and had blown a 0.28 blood-alcohol level. Police said she was driving drunk to the extent she was unable to count her fingers when stopped.

• Joshua P. Clark, 23, of Hudson Street, Warrensburg was granted an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal. He was charged with the misdemeanor of trespass, based on an incident weeks ago for being on the Warren County Fish Hatchery property in Warrensburg while the premises were closed to the public. He was ordered to perform 24 hours of community service.

• Judge Mindy Fisk granted landlord Gale Freiberger the privilege of evicting Gary LaRose out of his rented residence at 163 River St., Warrensburg for failure to pay two months rent totaling $1,200. She also won a $1,220 judgement against LaRose.

By Lynn Smith denpubs@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — After hearing a variety of concerns from the public Nov. 22, the Warrensburg School Board reversed its decision to move forward with a $1.3 million energy conservation project it had approved just two weeks earlier.

The project, promoted by state agencies, called for installing new energy management systems at its elementary and high schools. The installations were expected to maximize the efficiency of the buildings’ heating, lighting and ventilation systems. The upgrades were expected to save the school district at least $83,000 per year in utility expenses at present day costs.

But local residents questioned whether the savings plus state aid rebates would fully offset the $157,000 annual cost of the loan from the state Power Authority to fund the project. They voiced concerns of whether a projected $120,000 annual rebate in state aid for the upgrades would indeed be in existence for the 10-year life of the loan.

Area developer and Warrensburg resident Richard Emerson said equipment installed in the project might last only a fraction of the loan payback period. He said the proposed air exchangers called for in the project are more likely to last three years and not the life of the loan, 10 years.

Others have cited that the prior electronic energy management system, installed not too many years ago at a considerable cost, was to be replaced in this project — an indication of how quickly supposed high-technology equipment becomes obsolete.

Resident and former school board president Thomas Yarmowich commented that district officials should consider accomplishing the upgrades small steps at a time, after they were proven cost-effective.

“It’s a high-risk deal,” he said.

Several local businessmen also called for the school board to conduct more research on this project.

School board member Linda Baker-Marcella raised many questions, including the projected interest rates, and whether other school districts participating in the program actually achieved their energy-savings goals cited by state agencies.

The vote was 4-2 to rescind the decision to launch the project. Voting against rescinding the project approval were Dean Moore and Laura Danna, who said it made sense to pursue the state aid to pay for a project that had to be undertaken anyway.

The questions raised by Baker-Marcella, the public, and other board members were referred to Superintendent of Schools Tim Lawson, who said he’d research answers and present his findings in several months.

•100 Years Ago – December, 1910• Sub-zero temperatures recorded already Four inches of snow fell on Bakers Mills and Sodom, Nov. 29, 1910. The heavy snow has made good sleighing. Will White found a dandelion in full bloom Nov. 26 on the south side of the hill in his pasture.

The coldest day of this season was on Dec. 7, 1910, when the thermometer registered 8 degrees below zero at T.J. Smith & Son’s Grist Mill (bottom corner of Mill Avenue) in Warrensburgh, 14 below at Thurman Station and 20 below was reported at North Creek. On Dec. 8, 1910 it warmed up and was 3 degrees above zero at the grist mill. Work on the state road in Riparius has been suspended for the winter.

County court hands out stiff sentences At the regular fall term of county court in Lake George, John O. Williamson, who was accused of keeping a disorderly house at the Summit House in North Caldwell near Warrensburgh, pleaded guilty and was required to pay a fine of $100 or spend 50 days in the county jail at Lake George.

Due to lack of funds, he will serve his sentence in jail.

John Harvard was tried for third-degree burglary for breaking into the cottages of Col. Stephen C. Mills and General Lee, at Hague. He was sent to Dannemora for a term of one to three years.

Medos Benway of Glens Falls, who pled guilty to thirddegree robbery, was sentenced to a term of ten years in the Dannemora state prison. With his companion Frank Trombley, Benway held up and robbed Oscar Duell, a farmer who resides in Bolton Landing. Trombley turned state’s evidence and no indictment was brought against him. (Note: Benway was a repeat offender who had recently been released from Elmira Prison. His complete story is in this column in the Oct. 16, 2010 Journal.)

Death came in a heartbeat Erastus Frazier, an aged resident of Horicon, died suddenly Nov. 27, 1910 at his home. Apparently in the best of health, he had been talking cheerfully with members of his family and when he started to retire for the night, he sud-

denly fell to the floor with a gasp and expired.

Coroner Burt of Lake George decided that death was caused by the bursting of arteries near the heart. Mr. Frazier, who leaves a widow, was a member of one of the oldest and most prolific families in Horicon. He was the father of 13 children, six of whom are married and away from home.

Big win in Supreme Court Supreme Court Justice Kellogg has handed down a decision in the suit brought by Mary L. Curtis of Round Lake to recover for the death of her husband, Dr. P.C. Curtis who was killed at Round Lake by a Hudson Valley trolley car while he was riding in his automobile in September 1909.

Mrs. Curtis was awarded a verdict of $18,500 by the jury.

The defendant’s lawyers immediately made a motion for a new trial which was denied. Hudson Valley plans to appeal.

Wealthy Lake George estate owner dies General Henry Edwin Tremain, 70, a veteran of the Civil War and a well-known lawyer, died Dec. 9, 1910 at his home in New York City. He had been in poor health for some time and died of heart disease.

He was born in the city in 1840 and enlisted in the Civil War as a private in the Seventh New York Volunteers, but later recruited a company and went to the front as a lieutenant in the Second Regiment of Fire Zouaves, known as the 73rd New York Volunteers. He was taken prisoner at the second battle of Bull Run and became a prisoner at Libby prison.

He was made a major in 1863 and was recommended for bravery at Chancellorsville. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery in the battle of Resaca.

For several seasons, General Tremain and his wife lived in a house at 32 Sherman Avenue, Glens Falls and they were well-known summer residents. He owned a summer home and farm on the Bolton Road and a big Hill View (Diamond Point) estate on the lakeshore, the largest property there. At his death he left a widow.

Communities unite to save Empire games

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — Officials from across the North Country were shocked Nov. 17 when the state announced it was canceling the popular winter and summer Empire State Games due to New York’s ongoing fiscal crisis.

But the following morning, community leaders from the Lake Placid region announced they would pool their resources to save the 2011 winter games, despite losing state funding.

Representatives from the towns of North Elba and Wilmington, the village of Lake Placid, the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the state Olympic Regional Development Authority made a joint decision to work together and keep the games alive.

With tourism officials estimating a loss of $1 million in economic impact as a result of the games’ cancellation, Lake Placid Village Mayor Craig Randall said continuing the

event is critical to the region’s sustainability.

He added the loss of state funding actually presents an opportunity going forward, similar to efforts by Melvil Dewey in 1928 to bring the Olympics to Lake Placid.

“We have to look at this as one more of those activities in the history of the area where we could either allow it to go away, or we could step up to the table and perpetuate the vision of the Deweys and do what Lake Placid has done so well in the past with our friends and neighbors,” Randall said.

“We need to take advantage of an opportunity here and pick up these games. We have all the resources we need.”

North Elba supervisor Roby Politi said the state’s decision could be viewed as a disappointment — but that’s not the Lake Placid way.

“Lake Placid is all about opportunities so we decided to pick up the ball and run with it,” Politi said. “The state has said it can’t do it. But Lake Placid is saying ‘We can do it.’

We have the community spirit, the resourcefulness — and we have great partnerships.”

And while the loss of the games would have hurt the community economically, Politi said it’s not just about money.

“It’s more than financial,” he said. “We need to be thinking about young athletes. Athletes from across the state look forward to coming here and feeling the magic and the spirit of this Olympic place. It’s a wonderful experience.”

Jim McKenna, CEO for the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism and the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau, called the decision to continue the games a no-brainer.

“There’s a lot of expertise here,” he said. “We’re going to show the state that we can do this, and do it in a way that’s better than the past. This has the ability to lead to better things in the future.”

Politi said unlike the summer games — which have encountered significantly more financial hardship over the years — the winter games cost relatively little. He notes the infrastructure and venues are already in place, and the community is experienced in hosting events of this nature.

McKenna said the next step is to secure the necessary funding. That, he said, could be accomplished through private sponsorship.

ORDA president and CEO Ted Blazer said the venues are already set and that staff is ready to pull off what he described as an exceptional Empire State Winter Games.

State Senator Elizabeth O’C Little, R-Queensbury, and Assemblywoman Teresa R. Sayward, R-Willsboro, both said the state should have explored public-private sponsorships before deciding to cancel the games. In separate statements released Nov. 18, the two North Country lawmakers hailed the community effort to save the games.

Requests for comment from budget officials in Albany were unsuccessful this week. McKenna said he hasn’t heard whether or not the state is endorsing the plan.

The Empire State Winter Games features an array of Olympic-style competitions, including bobsled, biathlon, Nordic combined, and alpine skiing. Past games have featured Olympic and World Cup champions like Billy Demong and Andrew Weibrecht.

Lawyer takes up residence Frederic V.R. Turk, a young lawyer from New York City, has been sojourning for the past year in Olmstedville and North Creek to practice his profession. He has an attractive personality and a bright eye that indicates much native shrewdness and a frank manner which invited confidence.

News roundabout The new Glens Falls Hospital was opened Dec. 7, 1910. The building cost $116,000.

During the morning of Nov. 18, 1910, the residence of Bird Odell, a mile south of Lake George Village, was destroyed by fire which started from a defective chimney. Little furniture was saved and there was no insurance. The loss will not exceed $1,200.

Miss Lizzie Cameron and Roscoe Hadden were Thanksgiving guests of Miss Cameron’s parents in Athol. Marshall Stone is ill and confined to his bed in Warrensburgh. Dr. Goodman is looking after him.

Fay Young, 63, was found dead in bed Nov. 28, 1910 at the Lynch Hotel in North River. His death was due to lung and heart trouble.

Robert Wood of Igerna has typhoid fever. Kenneth Morehouse of Sodom is quite ill with a hard cold. George Sprague of Chestertown is ill with pneumonia. William Crompton of Newcomb has blood poisoning in his hand. Miss Bessie Pratt is ill in Warrensburgh with nervous prostration at her home on Horicon Avenue. Dr. Cunningham is attending her.

Andrew Chase of Newcomb, who is lumbering at Cold River, walked out to Newcomb on Saturday, Nov. 26, 1910, a distance of over 20 miles after he had only ate a slice of toast for his breakfast.

WARRENSBURG Burghers building versatility as they enter a new era WARRENSBURG — The Burgher Varsity Boys Basketball Team is now in a transitional year, having a core group of Seniors graduate and a new coach on board.

Warrensburg Central Athletic Director Steve Nolan is stepping into the shoes of Rich Schloss, who for years mentored the team with the help of his brother.

Gone for 2010-11 is the high-scoring Brendan Frye who with his elusive moves and court-sense thrilled Burgher fans. Gone also is Mike Perrone and his staunch defense and lightning-fast passes, as well as Dante Siletti, Jason Power, and Ben Nicols with their athletic play on both ends of the court.

However, now emerging from the shadow of Frye and crew, are a fearsome foursome of talented, experienced returning players, according to Nolan.

Ryan Belden, Mike Curtis, Hunter Werner and John Joseph, who collectively logged a lot of time on the court in 2009-10, will be stepping up and taking charge, he said.

“Our players are adjusting to a new system, with an emphasis on teamwork,” he said. “Everyone is learning all the positions.”

Developing this versatility will allow more options while keeping opponents guessing, Nolan said. With adversaries not keying in on any particular player, more shooting opportunities will likely develop, he said.

“We’re going to do multiple things offensively and defensively, and we’ll make changes as the game dictates,” Nolan

said. “We’ll be using the strengths we have to our advantage.”

One of those strengths will be height and rangy gristle.

Hunter Werner and Ryan Belden, both 6’4”, will be charging up and down the floor, perhaps leaving their opponents in the dust.

They’re joined by Seniors Aaron Seeley and Nick Monroe, and Juniors Jacob Siletti, Tyler Williams, Corey Chadwell and Gabe MicGlire.

These players, who possess athletic intuition and considerable skills, are developing their own rhythm of play, Nolan said.

“I’ve got a very hardworking bunch from Number 1 to Number 10,” he said. “They give me a solid effort every practice.”

Burgher Juniors now at the helm of experienced squad WARRENSBURG — Although the Burgher Girls Basketball team graduated four Seniors this year and has only two returning for 2010-11, coach Scott Smith isn’t fretting.

He’s got a strong group of experienced Juniors on the roster, and some height and strength as well.

He said he’s encouraged by the progress that the team has made so far this year and during the off-season — including regular practices in Derby Park with Bolton hoopsters.

Smith said his players are working very hard in practice and are determined to work toward their goals.

“The girls are up for the challenge of turning the basketball program around and improving on last year ’s season,” he said.

NORTH WARREN Cougar boys’ talent may mean boost in offense for 2010-11 CHESTERTOWN — A year ago, North Warren Boys Basketball Coach Jason Humiston was guarded about the prospects of his team in the ultra-competitive Adirondack League.

In that 2009 interview, he cited the talents of his players as they sought to recapture the glory of the 2007-08 season when they thrilled their fans with aggressive play and ended up a Section II Class D finalist.

The following two years were rebuilding years — last year the Cougars tallied a 4-14 record — and now the team has a core of experienced veterans who may take the team back on a pathway to glory.

Last year ’s team, averaged only 26 points per game — perhaps due to a shortage of tall players.

The group had no lack of heart, however, Humiston said.

“They had a lot of fight in them,” he said, recalling a loss by only one point to League-champion Corinth. “We were in a lot of games.”

This year, North Warren has two 6’3” players — Senior Travis Monroe and Junior Benn Frasier — allowing more flexibility in of-

fense, Humiston said.

“We’ll be able to spread the floor a bit, move the players around,” he said.

Monroe and Frasier, who’s known for his rebounding, are joined by veteran Senior standouts Joe Aiken and Bryan Beckler.

Humiston said he was expecting solid play from the other players as well.

“The team works well together,” he said. “We may have started out a little rusty, but we’ve been ‘clicking’ lately.”

Humiston said one key element to success will be for the team to rehearse the Cougars’ complex plays so well they’re ‘second nature’ with the group.

“It will take us a couple of weeks to get into our rhythm,” he said, noting that the team’s collective experience would help them accomplish their goals.

Humiston added that the team needed to ramp up its effort on offense by grabbing the rebounds and sinking the baskets.

“It comes down to making the shots,” he said. “If our jump shots aren’t falling, we’ve got to find a way to get to the basket — last year we were outside too much.”

Warrior girls team, with depth and experience, seeks to reclaim crown LAKE GEORGE — Every year as winter approaches, the Lake George Girls Basketball Team starts practice in their gymnasium under a bevy of banners that bear witness to the team’s long history of success.

As the squad develops skills and works on plays, the players annually seek to live up to the tradition.

Last year, the talented Varsity Girls team lost the Adirondack League Championship to Whitehall in a 4743 heartbreaker. This game ended the six-year streak for Lake George in winning the Adirondack League crown in girls basketball.

This year, the Warriors have reloaded and are wellpositioned to be atop the league.

“They work hard in practice, but they have a good time — they have fun when they play,” he said, noting the traditional success of the Lake George program has been built on spirited play and skill development in the elementary and middle-school years.

“These kids have pride, they've stayed with the program, developed the skills, learned the plays,” he said. “They’re very coachable and fun to work with.”

Tefft said the squad would be working toward their goals one step at a time.

LAKE GEORGE Warriors have height, experience and balance to achieve their goals LAKE GEORGE — A measuring tape appeared recently on the wall of the gym under the west basket in the Lake George High School gymnasium.

Before a scrimmage against Granville Monday, several of the school’s Varsity Boys Basketball players stood against the tape and called out their height — taller than their mentors had expected.

The players had nothing to prove, however. Three players on the team can dunk the ball — Matt Stover at 6’5”, Matt McGowan at 6’7+” and Alex Hladik at 6’4+” — and the coaches and fans are well aware of it.

They also fully recognize the athleticism of the team, which for decades has a tradition of competing at the top of the Adirondack League.

A third factor, however, is likely to propel Lake George back to the top this year — experience.

With a capital “E.” Lake George has no less than five starters returning to the team, and two others with solid Varsity experience.

Senior Center Matt McGowan, one of last year ’s standouts who is starting his third season as Center, talked Monday about that factor.

“Another year of experience means more maturity — improved decision-making like when to take the shot and when to pass it,” he said.

J.D. Jenkins said the lengthy time his teammates have played together has helped develop players’ synchronicity and ability to anticipate teammates’ moves.

“Our chemistry is contributing to ball movement and knowing where the players are and where they’re going — their style of play,” he said.

McGowan, Hladik and Stover are known to be productive on both ends of the court.

Senior Forward J.D. Jenkins has a reputation of staking out his place on the court in rebounding and getting his points off the offensive glass. And Jeff Maldonado, a two-year starter, is

a talented shooting guard, Assistant Coach Tim Kissane said Monday.

“Jeff creates opportunities off the dribble, and is not afraid to take the ball inside amongst the big guys.”

Last year, the Warriors were slowed down by an ultra-competitive Adirondack League, and they placed second in the league’s Western Division — not reaching their goals of capturing the league crown. CHESTERTOWN-- The North Warren Girls Basketball team has only three Seniors on the 2010-11 squad, but that’s not worrying Cougar fans.

They know that the roster of players, heavy with Juniors, includes about 10 stellar athletes who know how to overcome obstacles to win.

And this is an understatement.

These athletes were members of the field hockey team — ranked last in the Adirondack League at the beginning of the season this fall, but with determination and courage, fought through the season to the very top of the league, winning a co-championship as well as making it to the Section II finals.

Add to this group Ashley Maresca and Cassie Maday who were members of the North Warren cross-country team that waged a successful campaign all the way to the state tournament finals.

His core group of returning veterans include Seniors Lindsey Meade, Morgan Tennyson and Alana Kilcullen, and Juniors Kiera Warner and Cassie Maday.

They are joined by newcomers Margo Broderick, Chantal Millington, Ashley Maresca, Jenna Monroe, Kiersten Williamson, Melanie Yasco, and Laura Saloman, a tennis sen-

sation and a foreign exchange student from Europe.

Lindsey Meade is a three-year Varsity player, a forward, and she’ll be backed up by two experienced starting guards, Cassie Maday and Kiera Warner.

Hogan said he expects Meade to take control inside, while getting a lot of scoring from Warner outside.

Warner and Maday, he said have athletic talent, combining speed with capable ball-handling.

Hogan praised Warner ’s father, Larry Warner, North Warren’s Junior Varsity coach, for the skills he develops in the players. Warner coaches AAU ball, helping the players boost their experience during the off-season.

Friday, the team was dealing with several injuries and illness, with nearly a half-dozen players sidelined.

“Hopefully we’ll stay healthy and get things gelling,” Hogan said, noting that the team’s season opens with a tournament Friday and Saturday in Peru.

The athleticism and exemplary determination of this year ’s group may translate to new achievements for the team, past the 2009-10 squad’s 10-9 record and third place in the Adirondack League’s Western Division — good accomplishments for a school with a small enrollment.

“The players are showing signs of coming together,” Hogan said. “They are playing very well in stretches. We have an exciting season ahead.”

BOLTON LANDING Experienced Bolton boys have promise for 2010-11 season BOLTON LANDING — It’s likely to be an exciting season for the Bolton Central Varsity Boys Basketball team, as the Eagles’ squad has experience, height and talent on board.

Coach Steve Showers, returning to mentor the group after a year off, said this week he is excited about the prospects of the 2010-11 squad.

The team is anchored by the experienced Senior Matthew Smith at 6’5” backed up by talented veterans Tyler Calzada, Caleb Kneeshaw and Andy Smith — all Seniors — plus Juniors Mitchell Jordan, Todd Markham, Nathan Breault, Evan Malone and CeeJay Lofland.

Plus, there’s Sophomore Billy Smith who was playing Varsity as an 8th grader, accompanied by a classmate — yet another Smith — Dustin.

Showers said his squad has speed, rebounding, steely defense, and savvy offense this year despite graduating three stellar players: Dom Pfau, Matt Peterson and Dan Brown.

“We have talent; we’ve got a good core group that’s been playing together for years,” he said. “It’s just getting the chemistry factor together at this point.

The players are recalling the plays and strategies from two years ago when Showers last coached, he said.

Not only does Matthew Smith

provide valuable height, but others will be just as pivotal, he said.

“Mitchell is strong under the glass, Caleb is smart with good basketball sense, playing good defense,” he said. “Todd Markham is quicker than a hiccup, and Billy is a great player who keeps progressing.”

The team has some obstacles to overcome, however. Caleb Kneeshaw, a veteran with considerable talent, broke his hand in soccer and he’s on the mend. Also, Mitchell separated his shoulder in soccer.

The season starts Friday Dec. 3 in Hartford, for a special Coaches against Cancer tournament.

Unfortunately, both Bolton Central basketball teams won’t be playing in any league this year, due to a communication breakdown during pre-season that lead to the Adirondack and MVAC league schedules being formed without the Eagles in mind.

Regardless, the BCS Boys squad will be garnering their share of victories as they have their eyes on 2011 Sectional tournament action,” Showers said.

“We should be in every game,” he said.

Area schools to share $1.6 million for instruction upgrades FORT EDWARD — Area school districts will be divvying up nearly $1.6 million in federal Race to the Top grant money to more effectively stretch their budgets in improving instruction, BOCES District Superintendent James P. Dexter said this week.

"This is a perfect opportunity for BOCES to offer professional development, technical assistance and follow-up support," Dexter said. The area BOCES, or the WashingtonSaratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex Board of Cooperative Educational Services, will be providing services involved in the reform measures.

New York State will receive nearly $700 million in Race to the Top money that is earmarked to prompt reforms that include adopting new standards and assessment procedures, building data systems to support teaching, boosting leadership among teachers and administrators, and improving instruction at the lowest-achieving schools. Revising teacher and principal evaluations is among the initiatives funded.

About 70 percent of the federal funds dispersed in the state will go to the New York City area. The remainder is

headed for qualifying upstate districts. Funds will be dispersed over a four-year period and can only be used for approved activities.

Before the federal funds are awarded, however, school districts are required to establish three-person teams to implement the Board of Regents reform agenda. Also, 25 percent of each district’s allotment must go toward devising ways to improve teacher and principal evaluations.

Due to the scope of work that needs to be completed over the four years of the grant, school districts are not allowed to add these duties to existing staff members job descriptions — they must create a team to conduct this work. Dexter said his agency created one single team to study and pursue the reform measures over 29 area school districts.

BOCES staff noted that the federal money was allocated to the districts in sums from $3,600 to $192,000 based on formulas, but pooling the grant money and divvying it up was more equitable and efficient.

“By sharing resources, BOCES has created a team that will support the districts in meeting the grant initiatives and Re-

Town librarian, who boosted local culture, retires after 34 years

STONY CREEK — The affection within the pine-paneled, book-lined interior of the library on the afternoon of Nov. 21 was palpable — and directed toward Norma Hastings.

After 34 years as local librarian, Hastings was retiring from the Stony Creek Free Library.

At the reception for Hastings, she talked with one wellwisher after another that filled the library.

Asked what she’d be doing after retirement, she replied, “I’m looking forward to some time to read some books.”

Known locally as a skilled gardener, she said she’s now spending time in her vegetable garden, planning for next spring’s plantings.

“I’ll be growing my own plants again,” Hastings said, noting she‘ll also be considering some canoeing excursions. She and her husband Walter have enjoyed hikes and canoe trips through the years.

Adirondack folk singers Peggy Lynn and Dan Berggren provided music and songs for the event — playing guitar and concertina.

Sandy Payne of the Stony Creek Library board presented a plaque and gift to Hastings, prompting applause from the gathering.

Dan Berggren and Peggy Lynn seemed to reflect the feeling of those attending the event. Berggren read a poem, “My Library,” which ended with the line, “It’s only a room with shelves and books, but it’s far more magical than it looks.”

The duo engaged the audience with a merry song written for the occasion, “Here’s to You, as You Celebrate Retirement.” The ode was punctuated with a chorus phrase, “Our friend Norma Hastings, the pride of Stony Creek.”

Berggren and Peggy Lynn then sang songs about how women pass on traditions and strengthen the young for life ahead in two songs, “Big Beams” and “Stand a Chance.”

The theme reflected Hastings’ influence on the library and two generations of community citizens.

Under the direction of Hastings, the library grew from a single room with little more than the librarian’s desk and bookshelves on an outer wall, to a spacious area more than double the size with sections of books sorted to reflect many interests, plus a section of computers with Internet access.

In addition, the library now hosts successful children’s programs, and many cultural events.

The achievements of the library under the direction of Hastings were recognized by representatives of the South-

New history calendars now available The John Thurman Historical Society has its new 2011 calendars ready, and price is still $8. Outreach to those alone over the holidays For those folks who are volunteering for the annual outreach to those needing some extra attention over the holidays, a session to fill the Christmas Baskets with baked goods and maybe a craft or two is to be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, in the Thurman Town Hall. The snow day is Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Thurman Emergency Medical Services squad building on High Street also at 9 a.m.

The baked and homemade items for the baskets must be delivered to the Thurman Town Hall by 9 a.m. Dec. 10.

Organizers of this effort say items are still needed, including home-baked cookies, small breads, brownies, candy and fudge, and small gifts — to fill about 50 baskets. These will be delivered to folks who will be alone on the holidays, as well as shut-ins and the elderly. Help in this outreach would be well appreciated. Volunteers are needed to help in all aspects. Heating fuel assistance outreach set An outreach session of the HEAP program — to help local elderly or those on limited incomes with their heating fuel costs — is upcoming for Lake George.

Stony Creek EMTs host model training program Envisioned to boost response skills STONY CREEK — More than a dozen emergency medical responders from the area participated recently in a drill to sharpen their skills in attending to the needs of those in distress.

The Stony Creek Emergency Squad hosted a drill Nov. 18 employing a remote-controlled mannequin with interactive features to help simulate a medical crisis and provide feedback on emergency medical technicians’ response efficiency.

The dummy uttered words, exhibited a blood pressure, a pulse, breath sounds, and reactive pupils. The mannequin had a simulated heart attack and, in another episode, he presented symptoms of trauma associated with a motorcycle crash, including considerable blood loss and undergoing shock.

Stony Creek Emergency Squad members, along with their counterparts from Johnsburg Emergency Medical Services and the ambulance squad from Lake Luzerne, were put to a test of their skills, as the responders’ performance was recorded on a video camera for analysis and critique. This interactive-mannequin training was the result of a special study grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The pilot grant is envisioned to launch an ongoing program to help train rural squads in the North Country.

Leading the program were paramedic Bob Elling, clinical instructor in Cardio-respiratory and Emergency Medicine at Hudson Valley Community College, and EMT Greg Vis, president of Hudson Simulation Services. The purpose of the grant is to gauge the feasibility of introducing this type of training in the North Country, and to help small rural squads with retention and recruitment by providing exceptional training experiences — as well as boost emergency care in rural communities.

ALBANY — Researchers at the state Department of Health’s Wadsworth laboratory have found a series of existing antifungal compounds that could potentially be used to protect bats from White Nose Syndrome which has caused the death of tens of thousands of bats in northeastern U.S. State Health Commissioner Richard Daines said last week a Wadsworth research team has identified a safe chemical compound that is likely effective against the deadly disease, and that their work may play an important role in protecting human health, since bats control mosquito populations which can transmit diseases like West Nile virus.

“The research team conducting this study has done an outstanding job,” Daines said.

Since 2006, unprecedented mass mortalities have been recorded in hibernating bat populations in North America.

Scientists have estimated that more than a million bats have died, and the death count has been accelerating.

This has been troubling particularly since bats are considered very effective at controlling mosquitoes that can carry deadly diseases — a single bat can consume more than 3,000 mosquitoes on a single summer night.

The research work includes not only a way to treat affected bats, but to decontaminate areas infected with the fungus, and maintain a healthy environment, scientists have said.

White Nose Syndrome is a cottony, fungal growth that has been found around the snout and wings of diseased or dying bats. The fungus, known as G. destructans, generally affects hibernating bats and depletes their fat reserves months before normal springtime emergence, causing the bats to starve to death. The fungus also can affect a bat’s wings and impair the bat’s blood pressure and water balance.

The team of researchers screened the G. destructans fungus to determine its sensitivity to antifungal drugs used to treat human and animal infections. More than two thousand compounds were tested.

The study, which employed robotic devices for testing in some cases, found that preparations widely used to treat athlete’s foot were highly effective in destroying the fungus.

Also, some common ingredients of household disinfectants are able to inhibit fungal growth. This finding has identified antiseptic compounds that can be used to disinfect caves and prevent the inadvertent spread of the fungus when humans or their equipment come in contact with the fungus, according to a statement released by the state Health Department.

Walking through the moth-infested forest A

s I walked into the woods early last week, a heavy frost highlighted the intricate network of spiderwebs crisscrossing the forest floor. They had the appearance of a million, mini-laser beams guarding the woodland scene.

In the morning’s light, their webs seemed to be connecting every bush, tree and fern in the woods. Obviously, the spiders had been busy.

As I took my usual morning watch, I caught a flicker of something white, out of the corner of my eye. Was it a whitetail?

My heart rate went up, but I remained calm. I was being careful not to startle a deer with the quick turn of my head, and I moved slowly to see what was there.

I saw no white, no movement, no whitetails, nothing but the woods. Again, I focused my attention on the edge of the swamp directly in front of my watch.

It was only a few minutes when the movement of something in the distance again captured my attention. I strained my eyes to see what it was, as I slowly raised my rifle.

Viewing through the 5X scope, I discovered what appeared to be a rabble of butterflies gathered on a large rock, located just at the edge of the swamp.

In my mind, I laughed at nature’s trick, where the flight of white can be mistaken for the flick of a tail.

By the time the sun was up, the nearby woods came alive with them. They were little, white and grey or brown in color. And, they weren’t butterflies — they were moths.

I was surprised to see them in the air, since it was such a cold morning and so late in the season. I also wondered how many other hunters had been fooled by the moth’s endless forest flickers. They certainly caught my eye!

Butterflies vs Moths My first call went out to Sue Grimm of Saranac Lake, the “Butterfly Lady” at the former Paul Smiths Visitors Center. I explained what I had seen and shared a photo of the specimen. I also told Sue the appearance of moths, flickering white in the deep, dark woods, might soon become the bane of deer hunters She informed me moths belonged to the same family as butterflies — “Lepi doptera” — and continued, “Typically, moths are signaled to come out when both days and nights are warm. Perhaps they were tricked — it seems disastrous for them to come out now.”

Although, moths outnumber butterflies by a 10:1 ratio, they are the black sheep of the family. Little is known about moths and they are not highly regarded.

Butterflies are beautiful and gather in groups known as rabbles. They come out to frolic on sunny days and provide a whimsical and colorful addition to the scene. Kids make rhymes about butterflies Moths, on the other hand, are moth-eaten, and gather mostly at night around a back porch light. Moths are furry and dull, the overlooked cousins of the more popular butterfly. Spinning silk seems to be their only redeeming quality.

“But, why,” I asked her, “Are moths flying around at this time of year?”

“Moths hibernate under the leaves, and because they are furry, they are able to survive colder temperatures better than butterflies,” Sue explained. “The warmer air likely brought them out, or,” she joked, “they must get paid by the deer.”

More about moths Moths are more abundant than butterflies due primarily to their ability to exist in a wider range of conditions, and occupy more diverse habitats. And, unlike most butterflies, moths overwinter by finding shelter in leaves, debris or in a convenient closet.

As a result, moths are present year-round, and when air temperatures approach around 40 degrees, they can take to the air. Obviously, even the warmth of the morning sun on the forest floor is enough to make them stir.

Another big advantage in moth survival is the early start their caterpillars get on the leaves and grasses as they emerge in the spring, when there are fewer birds around to eat them.

Additionally, many moths have developed the same defensive colorations as butterflies, with “eye spots” on their wings to make them look bigger to ward off predators. Several moth caterpillars have actually adapted coloration that resembles bird droppings, which serve to protect them from other winged predators seeking food.

Moths are highly adaptable survivors.

Some species have even developed techniques that, in effect, help to jam the echolocation signals bats use to locate prey with radar-like precision.

Unfortunately, moths have not developed a natural technology to deal with more modern technology. Bug zappers, those big blue lights used to control mosquitoes and other flying pests, kill a lot of moths. According to experts, “Ninety-five percent of what they attract are moths.”

Burgher wrestlers depth promises lots of action for 2010-11 WARRENSBURG -- Those who venture into the Warrensburg High School wrestling room this year a day before a meet are likely to see as much action as they will in the scholastic matchup.

This year, there will be a substantial number of wrestle-offs to see who gets to compete against the opposing school. Many lower- and medium-weight classes have as many as three talented wrestlers vying for the top position, Coach Mark Trapasso said this week.

“We almost ran out of uniforms this year,” he said.

No less than 15 wrestlers are going to be competing to represent the Burghers in six weight classes,” Trapasso said.

Bolton girls are ready to take their game to new heights per game, while mentioning other players.

“Charlotte gets a ton of rebounds, a lot of steals and assists, and she gets the whole team going,” he said. “She’s the ingniter, and she keeps others in line.”

Schweickert added that the team will be relying heavily on rookie Sophomore Madlyn Wilson, and be looking for Freshman Kim Wright to contribute. He said the team will be looking for Roselynn Denne to step up.

“If our Juniors — particularly Rosie Denne — emerges, we could have a surprising season,” he said.

BOLTON LANDING -- The Bolton Varsity Girls Basketball team — like their male counterpart — has been orphaned by the Adirondack League and Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference this year.

Due to some unfortunate timing, Bolton was left out of league schedules. They’ll likely be able, however, to compete in Section II tournaments as an independent team, coach Luke Schweickert said this week.

This lone-ranger status, however, doesn’t mean they’ll be any lack of action for the Eagles. They’ll be competing against MVAC north teams as well as several dates with Adirondack League teams.

The Eagles Girls Basketball team is coming off a season of

achievement.

Their 11-9 record is solid, but even more consequential is their accomplishment of placing second in MVAC Div. II to Section VII champion Westport.

Considering this tough competition, such an achievement is lofty.

The team graduated two of the key players on this team, Danielle St. Amour and Grace Cady. But Schweickert is expecting the talented veteran players and newcomers to step up and fill the void.

Schweickert praised the talent and drive of returning starters Alana Peterson, D.J. Servelli, Emma Cady and Charlotte Caldwell. He noted that Servelli averaged 15-16 points
