ALBANY — A state Assembly committee will convene next week to weigh the impacts of Gov. David Paterson’s proposed staffing cuts at the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

In October, Paterson said he would seek to lay off nearly 2,000 state workers before year ’s end in order to reduce a state budg-

et deficit estimated at nearly $10 billion.

The lame duck Democratic governor, who will be replaced by Andrew Cuomo in January, pledged that his cuts would be dispersed evenly among all state agencies.

But an internal DEC memo, which was leaked to the press and prompted the firing of former DEC Commissioner Pete Grannis, showed that Paterson intends to cut about 200 jobs from DEC — representing about 10 percent of statewide setbacks.

Citizens who have photos or memorabilia depicting the famous stock car races at Ashland Park race track in the 1950s and 1960s, are urged to bring them to the Warrensburgh Historical Museum for examination and scanning, as an exhibit on the topic is now under development. Incidentally, donations are never refused. In addition to the museum’s regular exhibits about Warrensburg's past, we are showing some recent acquisitions, including a 5' x 6' 1930s vintage photo mural which was removed from a wall of the home of Grace Merrill Magee. Her home at 3 Hudson St. now houses Grace's Restaurant.

Visitors may also get a sneak preview of the museum’s Veteran's Appreciation Room, which includes exhibits about Floyd Bennett and excerpts from Joe Aiken's World War I diary and some of his snapshots during his days as Army cook in Italy and France. The museum will be open on Veterans Day, Thursday Nov. 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. in conjunction with the V.F.W. Chicken & Biscuit Dinner — free to veterans, $5 otherwise.

An old fashioned Christmas in Warrensburgh is planed for Dec. 4 & 5. Event chair Teresa Whalen has said it will likely include its full stale of traditional family-oriented holiday activities. She can be reached at 466-5497 for details.

Town leaders spar over health center support Warrensburg Town Proposed budget stalled over $41,000 Court report

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — A slim majority of the Warrensburg town board defeated the proposed 2010 town budget last week, with three councilmen suggesting revoking or reducing traditional payments towards the Warrensburg Health Center’s utility bills. For 2011, that figure has been estimated at $41,000.

Board members Austin Markey, Bryan Rounds, and Dean Ackley voted down the budget, seeking the retraction of support for the health center. Board member John Alexander and Supervisor Kevin Geraghty voted for the spending plan and advocated for continuing the payment to the health center according to contract. Such support has been in place for about 30 years.

The board’s decison prompted a special town board workshop Friday in which Dr. John Rugge, founder of the center and CEO of the parent Hudson Headwaters Health Network, said the retraction of such support could threaten $350,000 or more in federal and grants the chain depends on to provide vital health care for thousands across the north country. Rugge also noted that the health center makes voluntary payments in lieu of taxes for their property as well as providing 132 good-paying jobs for local people.

Through these grants, Rugge noted, local people have a vastly reduced cost for quality health care that is available for lengthy hours through the week.

As the Warrensburg Health Center is the largest private employer in Warrensburg, the payroll dollars of HHHN employees is crucial in supporting businesses in town, Board member John Alexander said, noting it wan’t reasonable to put the health center and its parent corporation at risk over $41,000, considering it provided services vital to the quality of life in the Adirondack region.

Alexander also said that local residents surveyed last year responded that Warrensburg Health Center and its comprehensive range of health services was the town’s top asset, and it would be irresponsible and short-sighted to put the health center and its parent company at risk.

“The Warrensburg health Center has made us the hub of health care in the north Country,” he said. “We don’t want to throw this away.”

The defeat of the proposed budget was the first in recent history in Warrensburg.

At the conclusion of Friday’s meeting in which Markey and Ackley continued their campaign to cut the support for the center, Rounds suggested that a compromise could be reached if the Warrensburg Health Center could somehow lower the copay that town employees pay for medical appointments, and Rugge said he’d look into whether that was possible.

Wednesday, the board was again set to tackle the issue of support for the health center.

Wednesday morning, Markey said that he and other board members were considering a cap to the utility payments. He said that utility bills for the health center, fuel oil and electricity combined, had been as high as $55,000 or so annually, but last year was much lower due to energy efficiency upgrades at the center — paid for by HHHN. Although the town owns the building that houses the health center, HHHN has paid through the years for its extensive ex-

pansions and renovations, including the recent upgrades, which have dramatically cut utility costs. The center also pays for the full utility costs of those additions, or about 23 percent, board members said.

Markey said he and others on the board sought to put a cieling on the utility reimbursements by the town.

“People need to be held accountable in these tough times,” he said.

With the $41,000 utility payment in place, the proposed budget — excluding special districts — calls for $2.6 million in appropriations, reduced by $1.2 million in estimated revenue and $311,840 in unexpended fund balance, leaving $1.12 million to be raised in taxes, a 5.3 percent increase over 2010.

The appropriations, general and highway combined, represent a $17, 504 reduction from the 2010 budget, despite an increase in highway expenditures of $16,269, a dramatic increase in state retirement, and increasing health insurance costs.

Oct. 27 — Judge Richard Nissen presiding • The case of Michael T. Masonius, 42, of Main St. Warrensburg was adjourned to Nov. 11. Masonius is accused of the Misdemeanor of Driving While Intoxicated based on an incident 12:05 a.m. Oct. 21, when he was stopped on Elm St. and his breath tested 0.20 blood-alcohol content. Masonius is also charged with Aggravated DWI, the offense of blood alcohol content 0.18 or higher, and Unlicensed Operator.

• The case of Andrew D. Wertz, 26, of Easton Pa., was adjourned to Dec. 8. Wertz is facing a Felony charge of Trademark Counterfeiting based on an Oct. 2 incident. Police said he offered for sale various men’s and women’s clothing articles bearing the trademarks American Eagle Outfitters, Aeropostale and Hollister while knowing they were counterfeit versions. The charge is a Felony because the property seized was valued in excess of $1,000.

• The small claims case of Calvin Varnum of Truesdale Hill Road versus Ed Bennett of Schroon River Road was adjourned to Nov. 10. Varnum is seeking $1,300 from Bennett because he allegedly did not complete a driveway drain construction project which was contracted in May 2009, and was started on Aug. 3. Varnum has said Bennett refuses to complete the work, according to town court records.

• Tammy L. Boland, 30, of Lake Ave, Warrensburg, received a plea bargain in a drinking-while-driving case. She pled guilty to a Misdemeanor of DWAI, reduced from from a Misdemeanor DWI. Boland was sentenced to a Conditional Discharge, and she faces a fine and surcharge of $760.

Judge Nissen ordered her to attend a victim’s impact panel session, perform 40 hours of community service, submit to a substance-abuse evaluation. Her license suspended for 90 days.

• Kathleen L. Carter, 62, Diamond Point Rd., Lake George, pled Guilty to a Misdemeanor of DWAI, in a plea bargain that reduced an initial charge of DWI following an Aug. 11 car crash on Pasco Avenue. Carter was sentenced to a Conditional Discharge, and a fine and surcharge totaling $610.

She was ordered to attend a victim’s impact panel session and to pay restitution for any damage not covered by insurance. Her license was suspended for 90 days.

• Kyle W. Keller, 18, Mountain Rd., Athol, was granted a six-month Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal.

Keller was originally charged with second-degree Harassment based on an incident April 27 when according to police he threatened a woman with physical harm. Judge Nissen issued an Order of Protection barring Keller from contacting the woman in question, according to court records.

• The cases of Patrick Cobb, Jamie Durham, Kade Hamblin, Joshua Lylyk, Jennifer Murphy, Maria Natale, Bradley Persons, kelly Rafferty, James Straight, William Szabo, Sadie Wells and May Mears were adjourned to Nov. 10.

Church members reach out to needy with new second-hand store

thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN — The Community Thanksgiving Dinner, a relatively new but treasured tradition in northern Warren County, is set for Saturday Nov. 20 at North Warren Central School, and the public is cordially invited.

In recent years, about 300 people have attended the event for good food, socializing and visiting with old friends and new. Annually, North Warren students, faculty, staff and administration all contribute money, time, effort and food for the free event.

The dinner not only brings people together in the school cafeteria for a sit-down meal, but dozens of take-out meals are also delivered to elderly shut-ins with students traveling quite a distance to deliver the food accompanied by a genuine smile. Back in the school cafeteria, students wait on tables, preparing plates full of food for citizens just as they custom-order.

Serving starts at 4 p.m. and lasts for at least two hours. Reservations are not mandatory, but would be appreciated. Call the school at 494-3015 extension 702 to make reservations.

CHESTERTOWN — For months, a group of women at Community United Methodist Church talked about the growing needs of many local residents prompted by the recent economic downturn.

Weeks ago, these members of Luci’s Circle figured out how they could reach out to those in financial duress, and they took action.

They publicized an effort via flyers and emails to gather quality used clothing, household wares and furnishings in both the church congregation and area communities, then they gathered the items their plea prompted.

Saturday, they opened a new venture in downtown Chestertown to provide goods at no charge to those in need.

Called the Community Share Center, it is located on Church street next to the Methodist Church.

The Share Center is open to all residents of Chester and adjacent communities, said Donna Lagoy, a member of Luci’s Circle which founded the center. Lagoy and her sister Sue DeGrush were among those spearheading the effort.

“We live in a small community, and most of the women in our group lived here all their lives — we can tell there are needs that aren’t being met,” Lagoy said. “There’s a center like this in Johnsburg and Schroon Lake, but not in Chestertown, so we wanted to do something helpful for people right here in our community.”

On opening day, members of 10 families visited the Center, browsing through the inventory, which includes infant clothing and baby items, books, puzzles, paper products, personal care items, children’s and adult clothing, dishes, bedding, dog and cat food.

Items needed now include winter clothing and outerwear, particularly in children’s sizes. Donated items must be clean and in good usable condition.

Hours of the Center for November are limited to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but days and hours will likely be added as needed, and notice will be posted on the front door of the Center, Lagoy said. For details, to donate, or to volunteer, call 494-3374 or 494-3468.

Lagoy has set up a working relationship with the Chester Recycling Center at the town landfill, for storing and offering larger furniture items to those in need.

Lagoy said she hopes to network with North Warren Central Schools and the town food pantry, to expedite referrals.

“We’re hoping we can reach a lot of people in need,” she said, noting that people are welcome to exchange items too. Also, winter clothing can be borrowed for temporary use by those visiting the area, and then returned, she said.

“I like to see everybody helping others out,” Lagoy said.

Cancer benefit replaces village holiday party Burlingame undergoing treatments LAKE GEORGE — The village of Lake George is replacing its annual employee holiday party with a public fundraiser for long-time village worker Reggie Burlingame.

All in the area are invited to the event, set for Saturday Nov. 20 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at King Neptune’s Pub in downtown Lake George.

Reggie is presently fighting a second round of cancer and will be traveling to Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York City for several weeks in November and December for aggressive treatment, village Mayor Robert Blais said. He has continued to work part-time at the village plant to oversee operations and spearhead planned improvements for the system, he said. Burlingame has been the village’s Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator for 21 years. Burlingame has won a number of regional and state awards for his expertise during his tenure.

The benefit will include a cocktail hour, light hors d’oeuvres and a raffle items including gift baskets of goods and services. Entertainment is anticipated for the event, Blais’ secretary Denise Snyder said Monday.

“The benefit will offer a good social time as well as raising money for a great cause,” Snyder said, noting that Blais and village Superintendent of Public Works Dave Harrington dreamed up the idea of substituting the fundraiser for the employee holiday party. “Reggie plans to be there, and he is so cheerful lately.”

Proceeds will be used to defray the travel and cost of accommodations in New York City during the course of the treatments.

Those wishing to donate or attend the function are asked to contact the Village Hall at 668-5771 ext. 25. Tickets are $30 each, and they’re available at the village hall.

‘Lite Up Village’ event to feature green theme LAKE GEORGE — Lake George Village’s “Lite Up the Village” celebration will take on a new”green” aspect this year as thousands of energy-saving holiday LED lights are illuminated for the public.

The annual celebration, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 27 in Shepard Park, will feature several displays by the village’s “Go Green” committee, and perhaps an appearance by Socket Boy, a character that’s been touring the state promoting energy efficiency on behalf of the state Energy Research Development Authority. Displays are expected to include a power-generating bicycle and the sale of recyclable grocery bags.

The family-orientated event kicks off at 4 p.m. with carol singing, featuring popular local vocalist Cyndie Wade-Wood leading a public rendition of “Twelve Days of Christmas.”

Mr. Twisty’s Magic Show takes to the Shepard Park stage at 4:30 p.m. preceding the countdown to the arrival of Santa Claus at 5:15 p.m.

Santa’s arrival is celebrated with a fireworks display off MacDonald Pier over the lake.

Members of the Lake George Volunteer Fire Department will then escort

Santa to the Village’s firehouse where he will greet children with treats supplied by the Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce.

An added feature this year will be a festive holiday sing-along and band concert in the firehouse meeting room, performed by a group from the Lake George Community Band led by Conductor Raymond Durkee.

Refreshments will be served by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Volunteer Fire Department. The free event is highlighted by the illumination of over 3,500 holiday bulbs lining the village’s Canada Street and Shepard Park. This year the majority of the village’s bulbs will be energy-saving LED lights, which is expected to dramatically cut the electricity use and associated cost.

For years, Lake George’s Lite Up the Village event featured traditional incandescent lights, but this year, energy-saving but brilliant LED lights will be illuminated in the annual ceremony. The event will feature a ‘go green’ theme with a possible appearance of Socket Boy, a character that promotes energy conservation.

•100 Years Ago – November, 1910• Murderer smiles at sentencing Beecher Faber, the murderer of Maude Ryan, pled Guilty Oct. 28, 1910 at his third trial in state Supreme Court at Lake George to second-degree murder. Justice Van Kirk sentenced him to 20 years at hard labor at Dennemora Prison. He sat in the courtroom beside his attorney, apparently unconcerned with his hands in his pockets and his legs extended, with a cynical smile on his lips as he looked at the judge with a leering expression. He had been sentenced to die in the electric chair on Aug. 8, 1909 but the Court of Appeals granted him a stay of execution. The gates at Clinton prison have closed behind him.

(Note: Reportedly, it had not been Faber ’s intention on Jan. 23, 1909 to kill Caldwell resident and waitress Maude Ryan, but she unfortunately got in the way when Faber was gunning for someone else at the Glens Falls restaurant where she worked.)

Reader’s letter-to-editor refers to baby’s death “This here weekly paper (Warrensburgh News) means a heap to me. You see, the time we lost our little baby and me and Ma was heart broke as could be - why, when that editor comes out and praises his little blameless life, his cunning way, and speaks of him as “sleepin ‘neath the daisies,” it somehow helped to take the pain away. In the hull (sic) wide world there ain’t no other can take this newspaper ’s place with me and Ma.” (Note: John L. Tubbs was editor of the newspaper in 1910 and undoubtedly he would approve of the Adirondack Journal as our hometown newspaper as it continues to reflect the character and interests of citizens in the communities of northern Warren County.)

Train crew badly injured The southbound train on the Adirondack branch of the D.& H. Railroad, due in Corinth on Nov. 10, 1910, ran into Hanfield’s switch a mile south of the depot. The engine was demolished, passengers were thrown from their seats and three members of the crew, conductor Jud Cull, baggage man Leroy Hawkes, and another worker with the last name of Trefontain, were injured. None of the passengers were hurt.

A very pretty wedding took place at St. John’s Church in Chestertown on Oct. 12, 1910 when Miss Helen Murphy, daughter of Cornelius Murphy of Friends Lake, was united in marriage to Edward D. Bradley of New York City by the Rev. Father Ward of North Creek.

Ernest Rist of Albany and Miss Maude Austin of Warrensburgh were quietly married at the Warrensburgh Presbyterian Church manse on Oct. 29, 1910 by the Rev. Richard Abbott. Miss Frances Austin and Harold Labrum were the attendants. The bridegroom is a former Warrensburgh boy.

The American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout evolved from a 1971 event in Randolph, Mass. in which residents gave up cigarettes for a day and donated the money they saved to the high school scholarship fund. The first national Smokeout was in 1977. For 34 years the Cancer Society has been trying to convince smokers to stop burning their money and enjoy the fresh air.

If you decide to put an end to your addiction, there is plenty of help available, so get some information about cessation — find some help, and set a quit date. Try donating the cost of your daily supply of tobacco to a local charity, or put it in a savings account for a nice vacation, or a new car. Looking forward to something positive can encourage you to keep trying.

New store scars plot To the editor: I am appalled at the lack of foresight, planning and zoning exhibited by the officials in Warrensburg regarding the issuance of permits for yet another Stewart's Shop to be built.

Is it not enough that there are currently no less than five convenience stores and gas stations within a one- to twomile stretch of Main Street?

The fact is, the people who are currently in charge are taking Warrensburg in the wrong direction. They are chipping away the incomes from local businesses such as Jacobs & Toney — business owners who live and reside in the area.

I am appalled at their decisions as there could have been dozens of better uses for this plot. A green space for the residents? A community gathering area? No — why would they want to serve the people who live and pay taxes in this neck of the woods. I can assure you that I, personally, will never shop at a Stewart's again — driving through Warrensburgh with yet another scar of a gas station/convenience store will be difficult enough.

News roundabout A young snowstorm tried to get a start in our area on Nov. 3, 1910 but it hasn’t accomplished much yet. Back on Oct. 29, 1910 the first storm of the season brought snow which melted as soon as it got to the ground.

The woods are full of hunters at Knowelhurst (near Stony Creek) and still more are coming in every day by automobiles, by teams and on foot. Quite a few more deer would be brought out if the woods were not so dry and noisy.

In Johnsburgh a party of 10 men from Schenectady were joined by ten more from other places and they left on a hunting expedition in the great north woods. Oscar Hewitt has had a hemorrhage in his head. Albert Armstrong was kicked very severely on the jaw by a new horse he had traded for and he was unconscious for almost an hour.

Harold Marshall of Garnet is drawing hay to Warrensburgh for E.H. Baker. Hugh Clothier was killed Nov. 7, 1910 by a fall downstairs at his home near Corinth.

In Riverbank, Alfred Pratt, who was a soldier in the Philippines (Spanish American War), has been allowed a pension of $8 a month. George VanGilder and Fred Morey, employed on the Smith & Millington pulp job, recently sawed and piled 10 cords of wood in eight hours.

Warrensburgh news In the election, Republican James Emerson of Warrensburgh beat Democrat Callanan for State Senator by a vote of 4,161 to 3,543.

C.H. Bennett of Warrensburgh has bought a lot at Sherman Pond and will build a camp there next season. William Marcellus is building an addition to his house in Burnhamville which he bought recently from Scott Ross.

A close observer cannot fail to be impressed with the fact that John G. Smith’s new residence, now in course of construction on Hudson St., will be not only be one of the handsomest but one of the best-appointed homes in Warrensburgh. Open to those of all faiths, the weekend is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday Nov. 20 and 21 at the Comfort Inn in Latham.

“This is an opportunity for couples to enhance their communication, as well as revitalize their marriage and romance,” Ed Staats said, noting the sessions focus on building closeness and communication, rather than group-based workshops.

A registration fee of $100 is requested for the weekend, which includes a motel stay and all meals. Additional donations toward the whole cost of the weekend are also sought from participants.

“Couples can take home what they learn from the weekend and use the approaches for the rest of their lives,” Staats added.

Holiday Show opens in Chester gallery CHESTERTOWN — The Holiday Show of the Art in Chestertown Gallery opens Thursday Nov. 11, and all are invited to stop in and examine the array of new art on exhibit.

The Holiday Show is the final show this year in the Gallery, sponsored by the North Country Arts Center.

An artists reception for the new exhibit, to be on display until Jan. 8, is scheduled for Saturday Nov. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Gallery has been met with rave reviews from the public and artists alike. Originally designed to attract local emerging artists, the first show opened in July with 25 artists. Now, with over 60 artists having exhibited their work, the success of the summer show persuaded the NCAC to plan two additional exhibits of local artists.

Staying true to its roots, the gallery provides a diverse selection of drawings, paintings, fabric art, mixed media, pottery, and jewelry. After the Holiday show, the gallery will close until next June when It is expected to reopen with a exhibition of student art.

The gallery is open Thursday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is located on Main St. in Chestertown. For details, call Fred Holman at 803-4034.

Caldwell-Lake George Library sets events LAKE GEORGE — Ongoing events at the Caldwell-Lake George Library for fall and winter include a weekly Preschool Story Hour held Mondays at 10:30 a.m., with the exception of snow days or school vacations.

Also, a monthly book discussion group meets the second Monday of every month at 7 p.m. Participants are asked to call the library to obtain the title of the book to be discussed.

Noted artist Neil Johns exhibiting in Chester gallery Artists’ reception this Saturday

By Dennis Wilson denpubs@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN — Neil Johns, one of the dozens of area artists now exhibiting their works in the new Art in Chestertown Gallery, brings a wealth of personal experiences and feelings to the prints he makes at his home in Stony Creek.

Johns’ works are included in the gallery’s Holiday Show which opened Wednesday and continues through Jan. 7.

An artists’ reception is planned for Saturday Nov. 13 at the Gallery, located on Main St. in the building that once housed the Har-

ness Shop. All are invited to attend the event.

Born in Seattle, Johns has studied at St. Martin’s University, St. John’s University, the School of Visual Arts, and the Art Student’s League — the latter two in New York City. He worked in Creative Marketing at International Paper ’s corporate offices there before retiring to the Adirondacks.

Introduced to printmaking years ago while studying clay sculpture in Minnesota, Johns became entranced with the complex designs, colors and techniques involved in printmaking. Johns prints mostly in intaglio, a technique that involves rubbing ink into lines etched into a matrix of wood, stone or linoleum.

Noted area sculptor and accomplished printmaker Neil Johns of Stony Creek poses with one of his prints during a recent exhibit at the Art in Chestertown Gallery, which launched its Holiday Show on Wednesday. The public is invited to meet and greet the artists exhibiting their works at a reception set for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday Nov. 13 in the gallery on Main St. in downtown Chestertown.

Johns’ favorite subjects are goats, which he raises, landscapes and people. “I used to ride the subway from Manhattan to Brooklyn. To pass the time, he’d draw the other passengers, artworks that he has retained for decades.

Johns has been making prints for 40 years, and during that time has produced over 300.

Also a sculptor in wood and plaster, Johns has mastered several art forms and has won many awards during his career.

Johns’ sculpture “Lonesome Man” — on display in Chestertown this summer — was crafted from mahogany salvaged from discarded furniture. Johns likes to recycle wood

for his sculptures and make art out of items others have thought useless.

Johns said recently he is constantly experimenting. When asked about future projects, Johns answered that he seeks to widen his subjects in his artwork and explore new creative processes. He said he wants to master another printmaking technique involving the application of solder on top of etching plates and then pressing the plate on top of the paper instead of rolling it on.

“This technique gives a very nice, embossed, three-dimensional look to the print,” he said.

Town leaders have indicated they might be swearing in the supervisor this week, following the commissioners declaration.

So as of Monday, townspeople were not absolutely sure who is to be their next supervisor — but both candidates are well-liked in the community.

Personal news Change of town leadership pending The new supervisor will be taking over the Town Board, perhaps as soon at the first meeting after the Nov. 2 election. The town's Fiscal Meeting is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. The Regular Monthly Meeting will be on Tuesday Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.

As of Monday, absentee ballots in the Nov. 2 election had not be counted, but they were scheduled to be tallied Tuesday afternoon. In the machine vote on Election Day, Evelyn Wood had 235 votes and Thomas “Tuck” Birdsall had 214, and there were 45 ballots outstanding.

However, Warren County Republican Elections Commissioner Mary Beth Casey said that if the absentee votes presented a plurality that could not be overcome by the remaining outstanding military votes, she and her Democratic counterpart Bill Montfort would be declaring a a winner by Tuesday afternoon. Full official election certification, however, would have to wait until each vote was counted, she said.

We have had unbelievable weather patterns recently. October was a cold month up until we had a dusting of snow covering the ground on Saturday Oct. 23. By late afternoon it had melted off, but 30 degree nights stayed around and many had their woodstoves fired up. So can you imagine our shock to wake up two days later to nearly 60 degrees on Oct. 25. Robins were once again seen on our lawns, ladybugs, hornets, flies, etc. were out in abundance and the temperatures got up to the 70 degree mark. Almost like Spring, but not Indian Summer they tell me; because that always comes in November, apparently.

Top this off with Monday’s weather. Perhaps for the first time in history, snow stuck on the ground in Albany — up to two inches — while mere flurries melted off quickly up here in the hills.

Here’s another Thank You to the town employees who pick up the trash. For not only turning over the empty cans, but for taking extra care to clean up behind the ravens and crows who like to scatter the trash! Thank you, boys!

The rain date is Dec. 12. Needed are small loafs of bread, cupcakes, fudge, cookies, etc. plus small gifts — all homemade. The volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. in the Town Hall. It helps if volunteer chefs have already put their baked items in small Baggies, counting out two to four cookies in each bag.

Those who cannot be there to help on Friday, baked items can be dropped off. Every little bit of help will be appreciated.

LAKE GEORGE — The state is dropping its controversial plan to halt trash pickup on Lake George Island campsites and is adopting a proposal concocted by local officials and legislative representatives to charge a disposal fee to recoup the costs, state Sen. Betty Little and Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward jointly announced recently.

The state’s intention to discontinue garbage pickup, aired three months ago, had alarmed local officials and environmentalists, who predicted that campers would dump trash in the lake and around waterfront areas rather than haul it home with them. DEC had announced they were halting the trash pickup due to budgetary restraints, and many lake area citizens and officials blasted the idea.

Little and Sayward said the state Department of Environmental Conservation said they will be charging an extra $3 user fee along with camping permits to raise the $90,000 they need to pay for the garbage disposal.

This concept was concocted by Little, Sayward, local officials and environmentalists at a summit meeting they held Sept. 17 with DEC middle managers.

Disposal of garbage would have become the responsibility of campers. The state has three island campgrounds on Lake George that host 387 total campsites.

Now, campers pay $25 per night to stay at a campsite.

DEC officials are planning to increase that to $30 for out-ofstate visitors and to $26 for those in state, plus the new $3 fee.

“The goal is to keep these sites clean, to ensure garbage doesn’t end up in the water and to prevent surrounding municipal trash systems from being overwhelmed,” Little said.

Sayward hailed the collaboration as an example of how government should be functioning.

“I appreciate the decision DEC made to continue to provide refuse pick up on the Lake George Islands," Sayward said. “This resolve is a perfect example of state and local government working together with stakeholders to find solutions in these tough economic times.”

Lake George Supervisor Frank McCoy said last week that DEC’s decision would avoid substantial pollution of Lake George predicted under the pending ruling change.

“This decision shows what happens when people come together to solve a problem and work towards a common goal,” he said.

Religious camp closes; church continues on site POTTERSVILLE — The congregation of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is saddened by Atlantic District’s recent decision to close SonRise Ministries, also known as SonRise Camp, in Pottersville. The church congregation expressed the opinion in a press release that this is a tremendous loss to the area communities.

2010 Warriors retire as league champions Galway 3, Lake George 0 SARATOGA SPRINGS — The 2010 Lake George Volleyball team fought hard Saturday against the athletic, big Galway team, but they were overpowered in three games losing their bid for the Section II Class C finals, the first finals game in 22 years in which they had not competed.

The unbeaten 2010 Galway team defeated them 25-23, 2515, and 25-22 in the Class C semifinals. Despite the loss, the Warriors 2010 season was robust with accomplishments, as the team won the Adirondack League championship, finishing with an admirable record of 15-4.

Lake George soccer squad’s Sectional quest ends Schoharie 4, Lake George 2 JOHNSTOWN -- Penalty kicks spelled the conclusion of the season for the 2010 Lake George Boys Soccer team as they were defeated Nov. 3 in a Class C Section II semifinal game by four straight shots into the net by Schoharie at the end of two scoreless overtimes.

The two teams’ talented defensive squads defense were enmeshed in the battle. Lake George’s tough “D” lineup was especially busy, considering that Schoharie had taken a majority of the shots-on-goal. In the second half alone, Schoharie outshot the Warriors 8-0.

The scoreless regulation play concluded with 10 players from each team lined up for penalty kicks. Schoharie (16-3) blasted in four straight, but Lake George missed two of its four kicks.

Despite the score, observers said Warrior Goaltender Ryan Moll had a stellar game, with several important saves that kept Lake George in the contest. It was merely that the Schoharie kicks were expertly placed and lightning-fast. Moll finished with no less than 15 saves, to the Schoharie goalie’s 3.

The Lake George Warriors finished their season 13-4-2 and champions of the Adirondack league Western Division.

BRANT LAKE — Sarah Schloss of Brant Lake was named recently to the SUNY Athletic Conference All-State Field Hockey Team.

A field hockey forward for SUNY New Paltz, Schloss is the first player in her college’s history to capture All-State honors in each of her four years on the team. She was named to the Second Team in 2007 and 2008 and earned First-Team selection in 2009. That year, she was named SUNY New Paltz’s Most Valuable Player in Field Hockey.

A 2007 graduate of North Warren Central School, Schloss is the daughter of William and Susan Schloss Collegiate sports observers say Schloss has established herself as one of the best offensive players in program history, as she holds all-time program records in points at 77 and assists at 19, and single-season marks in both points, 36, and assists, 10. She set both of those single-season records during the 2009 campaign.

Sarah Schloss This year has been equally as productive for the Senior forward, as she leads the team in points, 20, and goals. Her nine goals this season rank fifth in the conference. Against SUNYAC competition, she offered five goals and one assist for 11 points. Last year, Schloss was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III All-North Atlantic Region Second Team.

She was sworn in as Thurman’s youngest Supervisor ever, and only the second female ever to hold the post.

When Wood first announced her candidacy in July, some of the Supervisors on the all-male Warren County Board of Supervisors spoke of whispers that she’d get “eaten alive” by politics either at the town level or by the prevailing political forces in the county.

Political observers predicted that by jumping into the race early and running only on an independent label, the robust Republican majority would crush her at the polls as they voted the straight G.O.P. lineup.

Wood, however prevailed. First, by attending virtually all county government meetings since July, she learned about the myriad, complex issues facing the county.

Then in town politics, she successfully skirted the land-mines of contentious local issues with a positive but assertive middle-of-theroad approach. She put to use the knowledge she’d gained in years of attending so many town board meetings since she was in high school.

Finally, she ran a diplomatic, energetic campaign against the well-known, well-respected Thomas “Tuck” Birdsall, the endorsed Republican candidate who’s been a fixture on the local governmental scene for decades.

When the machine votes were tallied on Election Day, she received 235 votes to Birdsall’s 214. Ten hours less than a week later, the absentee votes were counted, giving her 17 votes to Birdsall’s 24, and the county Board of Commissioners declared her winner and certified the vote.

The improbable had happened, and Town Clerk Cynthia Hyde swore her into office.

After congratulations from her family, Wood walked upstairs in the Town Hall and looked over her office, where for decades, one middle-aged man after another had commanded the functions of the town.

Wood said she’d get started working on town business Wednesday, meeting with Interim Town Supervisor Al Vasak, the beefy former local football coach, to get briefed on pending governmental business matters -- the subtler items that she hadn’t yet heard about.

Next, she’ll be meeting with the Town Bookkeeper Lester Losaw, to try to get a handle on not only the 2010 town budget due in a matter of days, but a grip on the town accounts that are in limbo due to accounting irregularities and oversights occurring two-anda-half administrations ago in 2008 and earlier and have persisted to this day. Folks have yet to figure out how several years ago, more than $800,000 appeared in a forgotten town bank account.

other town board members, how much money to appropriate to the town’s independent ambulance squad, which is seeking to restore its Advanced Life Support capabilities.

The decision won’t be an easy one.

A few weeks ago, squad officials asked for $172,000 for 2001 to re-establish ALS, then when challenged, backed down to a figure half that much, then reduced the figure to $55,000 when citizens objected.

Only a year ago, the squad was receiving $35,000 or so from the town and they had ALS certification, before the town was embroiled in a controversy over the squad’s future. This and other issues prompted the former supervisor and a board member to resign.

In county government, she’ll be deciding on the future of the county tourist railroad — a deadline for a contract with a new rail operator is now looming — and the issues have sparked polarized controversy. Just ask those citizens who wonder how Thurman’s quarter-million-dollar passenger platform is going to justify its cost.

Also, the future of regional waste disposal and recycling is hanging in the balance as the DEC-mandated solid waste management plan is due by Dec. 31.

“I’ve got quite a lot to accomplish before Dec. 31,” she said. “I’m ready to get to work.”

Within minutes, Shannon Slater figured out that she hadn’t won $1,500, but she’d probably won the $300,000 top prize — a hunch that was confirmed first by co-workers. Still unsure of her winnings, Shannon Slater drove to the new Stewart’s convenience store at 1002 state Rte. 9 in Queensbury to have the ticket doublechecked.

Returning to work, Slater was greeted by County Clerk’s office employees who celebrated her good fortune with plenty of congratulations and elated chatter, Slater said.

Chris Slater was stunned by the win.

“At first, I didn’t believe her — it was too shocking,” Chris Slater recalled Monday. “I drove down to see her at work — and i gave her a big hug.”

After Shannon’s workday was over, Chris and Shannon went out to dinner at Red Lobster in Queensbury to celebrate, and Shannon had one of her favorite entrees — lobster.

Shannon cashed the ticket at the Saratoga Racino and deposited the money in their bank account.

The winnings won’t change their lifestyle. Chris and Shannon said they’d continue in their jobs and not make any career changes.

The two didn’t make any initial impulse purchases, but instead decided to apply it to bills and set the remainder aside for family savings, Chris Slater said.

“We’re going to do what we can with it — it will help out with the bills,” he said, noting it will likely provide a secure future for their 19-month-old daughter. “We have nothing set now for investments — we’re waiting to see how things pan out — but we know it adds to our financial security.”

Chris Slater said Shannon has indeed made some small investments since her lucky win — she’s purchased a few more Lottery tickets.

DEC Cuts From page 1 Environmental Conservation Committee, said next week’s hearing will explore the current economic state of the DEC and look ahead to next year.

Sayward added that Paterson will get a first-hand look at how his proposed cuts are going to affect the agency.

“How are we going to take care of the land with all of these staffing cuts?” she asked, predicting that DEC staffers will probably make presentations how they can deal with the proposed cuts.

Sayward was highly critical of Paterson’s decision to fire Grannis.

She notes that acting Commissioner Peter Iwanowicz will be attending next week’s hearing – and she’s questioning his role in the proceedings.

“Certainly, my guess is he’s going to say what the Governor wants him to say — which is that these cuts need to be made because of the budget,” Sayward predicted.

She added that next week’s hearings could end up being little more than political theater.

“Quite frankly, to be really candid, I can’t see the purpose of this,” Sayward said. “Everything changes. Nothing that this current seated governor is going to accomplish is set-in-stone. Hopefully, he’ll take the testimony and look at what people are saying, which could be helpful. But ultimately, the game changes when Cuomo is sworn in.”

The perfect hunt

T

he big buck appeared like a shadow in the early morning Manitoba light, and began methodically making his way toward my stand, stopping occasionally to test the wind or nose the ground for signs of danger or other deer.

It is easy to allow your mind to wonder during the hours of solitude spent in the forest — picturing the ideal spot for a monster whitetail to make an entrance.

I think we all do it — envision which route or trail an experienced brute might take — visualize him walking through a sliver of light along a faint runway carved into the forest floor.

On this morning, I don’t think I could have scripted it better.

He first came into sight like a ghost emerging from a tangle of dense brush — exactly as I had envisioned an experienced deer would. Then, he strode proudly along a well-used trail that promised to bring him easily within bow range.

“He’s a nice buck, I am definitely going to take him,” I whispered to my hunting partner, Mike Fenoff, as I eased my way into a solid shooting position.

I caught a glint of antler at 60 yards, and took a deep breath to calm my nerves.

While some shots with a bow happen as quickly as it takes to raise and draw, others seem to unfold like a television drama.

This was proving more the latter, giving me almost too much time to mull the shot while nervously willing the deer on.

For the moment at least, he continued to steadily close ground.

Then, just as it seemed the buck would emerge under my stand, the heavy eightpointer seemed to vanish into the thick Canadian bush as quickly as he appeared.

“Where did he go?” I said in a hushed tone and Mike answered remorsefully, “I don’t know.”

It was the fourth morning of a fullyguided bow hunt in Minnedosa, Manitoba.

Mike had tagged out a few days earlier on a dandy 11-pointer with gnarly dark antlers and then offered to man a video camera in hopes of capturing my hunt on tape.

Our guide was Ernie Noordenbos of Little Saskatchewan Outfitters. Both Ernie and his son, Kevin, are disabled — Ernie from a fall while working as a heavy equipment mechanic and Kevin from a car accident that left him comatose and then

with a lifealtering brain injury.

Ironically, it was our disabilities that brought us together.

It was this common affiliation that led to me booking a hunt with Ernie, and I’ve been two years waiting anxiously to make it happen.

New York is not as permissive with the use of crossbows among its state’s disabled hunters — only paraplegics who fire with assistance from a blow tube are allowed to use them during our archery season.

We saw 17 deer the first day in Manitoba, which was capped by Mike downing his largest buck ever with a bow, or any other firearm for that matter.

Then, a nasty cold front weather forecasters compared to a category three hurricane settled in bringing sleet, snow and 50 mph wind. Needless to say, deer activity tapered dramatically and I was beginning to question my chances of filling my tag.

That is, until the heavy eight made an appearance.

But, the deer had vanished into the same thick underbrush from which it appeared, and for what seemed an eternity neither

Wandering whitetails, nervous drivers f any of the numerous predictions that the whitetail rut will commence in full force this week can be believed, I’ll be spending a lot of time in the woods.

Outdoor travelers should recognize that last week’s long, long journey will be condensed this week, as the hours of daylight grow increasingly shorter.

As most hunters know, during the spring and summer, deer travel in family groups. However, deer movement greatly intensifies during the middle of November as diminishing hours of daylight serve to trigger the breeding season.

It is important for motorists to note the increased deer movement as well, especially since it continues throughout the evening hours.

The peak periods of deer activity occur during the morning and evening hours, which are also when most people are driving to, or coming back from work.

Changing weather patterns also tend to compound the situation, with limited visibility, snow and icy roads a standard for travel in the Adirondacks.

Most local residents can relate at least one deer/vehicle incident. Living in the Adirondacks, it’s a fact of life.

Insurance industry surveys indicate that nationwide, deer/motor vehicle collisions have historically experienced an annual peak during the month of November.

Despite claims that blame hunters for the increased deer movement, bucks travel extensively during this timeframe seeking does, regardless of the hunting pressure.

At this time of year, a buck’s wanderlust has more to do with lust than wander. A mature buck may venture a great distance to find a doe, or it may never leave its home woods.

The major factor for determining buck movement is the buck to doe ratio. Bucks will disperse during the rut, but the most dominant buck will usually be holding tight to his home turf. Younger bucks have been found to venture over 5 miles distance from their home areas, in search of

Just minutes after the deer had ducked into the bush, he reappeared, this time intent on following the runway two does had taken earlier, directly under our stand.

As Mike videotaped, the deer made his way to within 50 yards, then 40, then 30. At 25 yards, I stopped him with a bleat and sent an arrow home. The shot was true and he dropped in sight.

It has been said that harvesting a mature whitetail with a bow cannot be described, only felt by those who have earned the feeling.

Deer caught in the road by an approaching vehicle may not move out of the way, even if the driver honks the horn. They’ve only got one thing on their minds at this time of year.

Drivers should slow to a stop to allow deer to cross, and wait. Remember, deer travel in groups, and if you see one, you'll probably see a few more.

Paint by number, hunt by color Here are a few facts and statistics to ponder as your wander during the hunting season.

Colors are associated with a wide variety of causes and campaigns these days. We’ve got Red states and Blue states, which are named for their dominant political persuasion and we’ve got white for wedding celebrations and black for mourning.

But only blaze orange is recognized for it’s international appeal. Although fluorescent orange clothing has long been considered essential gear among many hunters, in some states, the use ‘hunter orange’ is optional. Currently, forty states require hunters to use some element of orange material, while in the field.

In New York, where the use of orange is still not mandatory statewide, a study determined that 94 percent of all hunters involved in incidents where they were mistaken for game; were not wearing hunter orange. The figure is even more startling when you consider that 81 percent of New York hunters regularly wear hunter orange.

I know many hunters who claim the mandatory use of

orange is an infringement on their personal freedoms.

However, when an individual in possession of a high-powered rifle mistakes them for a game animal, their personal freedoms are also likely to be infringed upon.

Moose River Recreation Area Following the uproar over a proposed closure of roads and road access campsites within the vast Moose River Plains Recreation Area, the NYSDEC revised their closure plans. Fortunately, instead of engaging in a prolonged battle, the various factions came together in cooperation.

With the help of the local Highway Departments from Old Forge, Inlet and Indian Lake, the DEC was able to keep the proposed roads open to travelers. The move made it feasible for hunters to enjoy another season in the Moose River Plains, just in time for the annual NYS Muzzleloaders Rendezvous, and also allowed leaf peepers to enjoy the fabulous fall foliage.

In researching the history of the Moose River Plains, which was originally acquired by NYS in the 1960’s, I came across a letter written by Tom Monroe, the former DEC Region 5 Executive Director. It was interesting to note that the Moose River Plains was initially purchased by the state with sportsmen and women in mind.

In his correspondence, dated 11/16/77, Mr. Monroe explained, “At the time of acquisition,..a big play was made by the department indicating the property was being acquired with hunters and fishermen in mind. To accomplish this end, the state acquired the property by two separate deeds (one for the property and one for the roads) The purpose of the second deed for the roads was so that access rights could be acquired as other than forest preserve and no one could question the maintaining of the roads for vehicular access. The deed for the roads states, “ for the purpose of better promoting fish and wildlife conservation practice on adjacent lands.”
