By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com ATHOL — With the Election Day votes tallied Tuesday night, Evelyn Wood, 33, is close to becoming the youngest Thurman supervisor in history — and she’s likely to be the second woman ever to hold the post.

Wood, who lives on her great-grandparents homestead off Elmer Wood Road with her husband and two young children, received 235 Evelyn Wood votes to 214 for Thomas Photo by John Lustyik “Tuck” Birdsall.

The results aren’t conclusive because about 45 absentee ballots are outstanding.

Wood said she was pleased with the results.

“I’m happy I managed to pull it off,” she said, noting she had been campaigning under a disadvantage of being listed on the ballot as an Independent rather than as a Republican,

CHESTERTOWN — Increased expenses primarily attributable to highway maintenance will push the local total tax rate up in 2010 by about $14 per year for a $120,000 house, Town of Chester Fred Monroe estimated Monday.

The pending town of Chester tax increase would have been far larger due to spiraling costs of retirement and health care expenses, had it not been for a local effort to collect old unpaid traffic tickets — an initiative which offset the budget gap substantially, Monroe said.

The Chester town board has prepared a preliminary 2011 budget that calls for General Fund expenditures of $1,589,658 and Highway appropriations of $1,614,658. The town property tax rate is expected to increase in 2011 by 14 cents per thousand to $2.34 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

QUEENSBURY — Weary of hearing about ever-spiraling governmental expenses, Warren County officials received some unexpected cheery news this week from Treasurer Frank O’Keefe via email.

O’Keefe told them that the state apparently made a clerical error in its sales tax accounting, and the county will be receiving $360,912 more in sales tax revenue for the third quarter of 2010 than expected.

Year to date, the county had been credited with $32,547,000 in sales tax revenue, an increase of $287,744 over last year. With the windfall due to the accounting error, that increase was actually $648,716, O’Keefe said.

Both O’Keefe and county Budget Officer Kevin Geraghty both said they’d suspected the third-quarter figures the state had calculated were too low, in reviewing the bed tax receipts which were proportionately more robust, the fact that gasoline was at a lofty price, and that

NWCS students learn about fire safety CHESTERTOWN — Area firefighters recently offered fire safety tips and demonstrated firefighting gear to children at North Warren Central School.

Members of the Horicon Fire Company and Pottersville Fire Department joined Chestertown Fire Department personnel in annual Fire Prevention Week education presentations at North Warren’s elementary and middle schools.

The sessions included classroom presentations for pre-K through eighth grades and fire apparatus demonstrations. This year ’s program was initiated by Chestertown Fire Chief Jack Crossman who has said fire prevention education is a very important element in how fire agencies serve their communities. A dozen or so members from the three agencies took part.

Firefighters went to pre-K classrooms to talk about fire safety and show turnout gear and breathing apparatus firefighters wear. Grades K-8 were divided into audiences that allowed age-appropriate fire prevention and safety lessons for each group, Pottersville Fire Department Chief Guy Swartwout said.

The primary grade levels were taught about

the speed and heat of fire and the deadly nature of smoke. They were told about the importance of working smoke alarms and the need to prepare and practice a plan to get out should a fire occur in their home. Exit drills in the home, known as the acronym EDITH, were explained.

The middle-school students were challenged to personally take the lead in fire prevention and safety in their homes, school and community.

He told the students they could be firefighters without getting to a certain age or joining a fire agency, by doing the most important, effective firefighting anyone can do — fighting fire before it starts.

“If the fire trucks roll, the bad thing has already happened,” he said. “All the firefighters can do then is try to keep it from getting worse.”

Interspersed in the assembly presentation were video segments showing the quick progress of an actual residential fire, with the deadly heat and smoke permeating the house.

After the assembly presentations, each group went outside to see apparatus displayed by the three departments. Members explained how the equipment functions.

School board chooses Patrick Dee for top post

The school board has decided to officially appoint Dee at its upcoming Dec. 14 meeting. Pending mutual agreement on an employment contract, Dee will officially begin as superintendent Dec. 15.

A 1987 graduate of Lake George High, Dee continued his studies at SUNY Plattsburgh, where he received a degree in Educational Administration and earned cerPatrick Dee tification as a school psychologist. Afterwards, Dee worked in the Fort Edward Central District in that latter role.

Subsequently he was hired by the Glens Falls School District to be principal at Sanford Street Elementary, a post he held for 10 years before being chosen as Lake George’s Director of Curriculum & Instruction.

Dee said Tuesday he was looking forward to his work.

“It’s a superb culture at Lake George Central, and a marvelous place to be,” he said.

LAKE GEORGE — About 17 years ago, Lake George High School graduate Patrick Dee half-jokingly told his mother that someday he’d become his alma mater ’s Superintendent of Schools.

This goal was pushed to the wayside, however, when Dee concentrated on his primary interest — working directly with children in the classroom, a role he fulfilled first a a school psychologist, then as an elementary school principal.

Within a few weeks, however the graduate’s brash prediction to his mother will be coming true.

Patrick Dee, now director of curriculum and instruction for Lake George Central School District as well as interim Superintendent, will officially become the permanent Superintendent of Schools.

Last week, the Lake George School Board announced the appointment, which is to be effective in mid-December.

Tuesday, Dee didn’t hide his enthusiasm over the board’s decision.

“I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “Lake George Central is a great place to be working.”

Dee said the positive atmosphere in the Lake George schools, the upbeat attitude of the students, and the prevailing dedication of their faculty, were all unparalleled.

“Lake George has a student-centered, progressive school board with an exceptionally enthusiastic faculty,” he said.

“And its administrative staff is simply a group of outstanding, great leaders with marvelous connections with the students.” he said.

teer performers at the Bennett Memorial bandstand and the Health Center seemed to be well received. The entertainers enjoyed the time spent and will likely volunteer to offer their talents again next year, Chamber officials said.

Great Garage Sale event considered successful This year ’s edition of the World’s largest Garage Sale was an overwhelming success, according to those helping out at this year ’s event.

Folks attending a recent meeting of the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce, the two-day event’s sponsor, offered details of how busy vendors were and the Garage Sale’s robust attendance.

With enthusiasm, Chamber President Cheryl Kenyon noted that many Sale vendors ran out of merchandise and food on Saturday, prompting them to close early on Sunday. Warrensburg Fire Co. President Kevin Geraghty reported that local firefighters parked over 300 cars at their firehouse, far more than had been expected.

Larry and Debbie Stephenson, volunteers who staffed the parking lot at the Warren County fairgrounds said it was very busy on Saturday and the buses were always full when they left to take visitors into town. Many commented on the fact that buses often did not stop at bus stops late Saturday afternoon, apparently because they were full. It was suggested that next year the full buses display signs to inform potential passengers of their full capacity.

“Garbage galore” is what the Garage Sale generates. The Sale’s cleanup team of Wally Ross and his crew used over 500 trash bags this year. Wally and the Warren County Youth Court teenagers helping him were efficient getting the bags set up in the trash cans replaced and the garbage picked up, it was reported.

Among the 24 tons of refuse left curbside was a kitchen sink. Every year, residents seem to put out household items for the trash pick up — last year, the haul included a refrigerator — and this curbside disposal costs the Chamber of Commerce dearly. A suggestion was made that next year the Chamber make an effort to recycle more, setting out separate barrels for recyclable cans and bottles.

It was also noted that signs that were posted to direct visitors to parking areas were illegally removed again this year.

Warrensburg Chamber Holiday Craft Fair The Warrensburg Chamber will hold its annual Holiday Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday Dec. 5 at Echo Lake Lodge. Vendors are now being sought for the sale. The cost of space at the craft fair, 10 feet by 10 feet, is $40 with a maximum of one space per vendor, craft sale director Faith Buck said. Those interested in selling wares at the craft fair are urged to contact the Chamber office at 623-2161 as soon as possible. Only quality handmade gift items are included in the fair, and vendor space is limited.

Dinner set for Operation Santa Claus A benefit spaghetti dinner is to occur at the Warrensburgh Masonic Temple Saturday Nov. 6. To be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m, the event is a fundraiser for Operation Santa Claus. The cost is $8 adults, $5 for children through age 12 and all proceeds go to brighten the holidays of local children in need.

The event includes a silent auction of donated goods.. Operation Santa Claus provides clothes and food for children in need during the holidays in the Warrensburg School district. For details, call 623-3531.

Veterans Appreciation Room opens at museum On Veterans Day, Thursday Nov. 11, the Warrensburg Museum of Local history will open during the day to introduce its new Veterans Appreciation Room. Exhibits honoring service men and women from the Civil War era forward are being developed for the ongoing exhibit. Hours will be announced in next week’s Adirondack Journal. The museum, located in the VFW Building at 3754 Main Street, continues to be open during its regular hours, 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. This Thursday Nov. 4 from 6 to 8 p.m., the museum of local history launches a new monthly series of evening sessions, each with a particular theme. These monthly sessions offer evening hours once a month for those unable to visit during the day or on weekends — and this November in-

4H’s Science Day links youth nationwide WARRENSBURG — On Oct. 7, Warren County 4-Hers joined millions of other youth across the United State during National Youth Science Day by participating in this year ’s experiment: “4H2O.” The experiment was held at the Cooperative Extension office in Warrensburg.

The Youth Science Day focuses on youth engaging in science experiments that revolve around current international topics. Some of the past experiments have included topics such as hydro-gels and biofuels. Every year, millions of youth participate in the experiment and share their results with each other through an online database.

Youth compare their results with others and come to a common conclusion.

This year ’s National Science Experiment focused on water quality and climate change — how heightened levels of carbon dioxide can affect aquatic animals, plants and other living organisms in waterways. The experiment materials help youth measuring their family ‘s carbon footprint, and estimate potential energy savings.

Suitor proposes during local Graveyard Walk WARRENSBURG — Under a full moon on Oct. 22, a spooky scene in the Warrensburg Cemetery was overshadowed by a heartwarming event.

A couple visiting the area became engaged as a character from history emerged from the darkness and prompted a marriage proposal, an utter surprise to the prospective bride.

The proposal occurred during Warrensburgh Historical Society's Annual Graveyard Walk which hosted 65 spectators.

As the last character, Orlando Bryant, or the historic “hermit of Harrington Hill” was finishing his presentation to a group of about 30 visitors, he approached a woman in the front row and asked her to be his wife.

“She is already taken!” responded the man standing alongside her. The actor portraying Bryant took the lady's hand and replied, “But where is her ring?” at which point the man, Rich Carson, produced a ring, and ceremoniously asked Jean Massaro to marry him.

Massaro is a special education teacher from Warwick, NY and Carson of Vernon, N.J. is a hospital nurse and member of the Vernon town board.

The scenario for the proposal was set up by Warrensburg Town Historian Sandi Parisi, founder of the Graveyard Walks and cousin to Carson, who was visiting Warrensburg with his girlfriend and wanted to surprise her. Sandi contacted John Gable, who was to portray Orlando Bryant, and between them, concocted the scene. Adding a bizarre aspect to the event is the fact that this Bryant was well-known for his antisocial behavior and he eventually died long ago in an insane asylum.

Friday’s Graveyard Walk was concluded with a gourmet dessert buffet at Cornerstone Victorian Bed & Breakfast, where everyone congratulated the couple while feasting on an array of desserts.

A second Graveyard Walk is scheduled for Friday Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. This event will be followed by a homemade dessert buffet at the William Maher home nearby. Tickets, at $6 each, will be available at the cemetery gate on Hudson St.

The timing of the resignation of former town Supervisor Red Pitkin in July blocked a Primary race, so Wood launched her campaign as an Independent. Birdsall, who is town G.O.P. committee chairman, voted in a caucus with the one other committee member Ed Binder, and the two chose Birdsall to appear on the ballot as the endorsed Republican. Birdsall, a farrier, is the town’s chief Assessor.

Wood said that she was happy that voters looked beyond the traditional age and gender stereotypes and gauged her candidacy on its own merits. She is known to delve into issues and keep well-informed. Since announcing her candidacy, she has attended virtually all county meetings to acquaint herself with government issues. She’s been going to all town meetings for well over a year.

“I think we have a lot of forward-thinking folks here in Thurman,” she said Tuesday night. “When I was campaigning, people seemed ready for new ideas and a new approach -- they were really receptive.”

The winner of the race will be sworn in for the Supervisor’s post as soon as results are certified by the county Election Commissioners, because the position has been technically vacant since July. Board member Al Vasak is now serving as interim town Supervisor.

The other race Tuesday in Thurman — the only Warren County town with contested positions — was for an open seat on the town board. Incumbent town board member Becky Hitchcock, appointed after Jim Ligon resigned in July, defeated challenger Andrew Knoll, a computer systems administrator, by a margin of 234 to 170.

County G.O.P. Commissioner Mary Beth Casey said late Tuesday night that outstanding absentee and military ballots may be received by her office as late as Nov. 24. At any time before then if only a few or none are not yet returned, the race could be certified earlier.

Tuesday at about 10:30 p.m. Tuck Birdsall all but conceded the race after he saw the 235-214 machine vote tally.

“It’s pretty improbable for that margin to be turned around,” he said, noting that absentee votes generally follow the trend of the machine votes. “Apparently people liked what Evie said better than what I said, and I accept their decision.”

Birdsall, known for his wit and diplomacy, added another thought.

“I tried my best, now I wish her the best,” he continued.

Wood said that as soon as she’s sworn in, her first objective will to be to examine budgets and financial records, as the town had until recently been in financial turmoil. An audit more than a year ago discovered the town had more than $800,000 in funds that town officials weren’t even aware of.

Also, Wood said she wanted to settle the issue of the town’s ambulance service. Months ago, Thurman Emergency Services, Inc. lost its Advanced life Support Certification, primarily due to insufficient staffing, and for months the agency had only been responding to a fraction of its calls. Such lack of response prompted the town board to withhold its annual contract pay-

ments, a contentious issue that in part led to Pitkin’s resignation.

Recently, the squad has proposed that it re-establish ALS services, and has submitted contract requests reflecting annual sums ranging from $172,000 to about $55,000. The town board has balked at the higher figures, and questioned whether the squad officers were merely creating well-paid jobs for themselves.

Wood said Tuesday it was a high priority of hers to arrive at a reasonable sum for the 2011 contract. She has campaigned that the town should stick with its local independent squad rather than turn over the services to another agency like the Warrensburg ambulance squad.

As she was fielding late congratulatory calls, Wood said she’d be taking down her campaign signs around town Eednesday and visiting the county center.

“It was a clean and dignified campaign on both sides,” she said. “I knew the vote was going to be close.”

Warrensburg Town Court report Oct. 20 — Judge Mindy presiding • The case of Harley W. Pryme, 24, was adjourned to Nov. 3. He is accused of fourth-degree Criminal Mischief and second-degree Harassment based on an incident at 8 p.m. Oct. 16 on Horicon Avenue in the Warrensburg hamlet. Police said Pryme ripped the bedroom door off the wall and broke it in half, then threw it against another door and into a wall, causing damage to a victim’s apartment. Police said he threatened a man of physical harm, and according to a victim’s statement, chased him outside, yelling threats, until the victim got to his vehicle.

• Clifford Johnson IV pled Guilty to Possession of Marijuana, and he was sentenced to a fine and surcharge totaling $225.

• Gary LaRose pled Guilty to DWI, and he was sentenced to three years’ probation, and he faces a fine and surcharge totaling $900. His license was revoked for 90 days, and he was ordered to have a sobriety ignition interlock operating in his vehicle for one year. Also, he was ordered to attend a victim impact panel attend substance abuse counseling sessions.

• Franco Zagari pled guilty to Facilitating Aggravated Unlicensed Operation and Disobeying a Traffic Control Device. He was sentenced to fines and surcharges totaling $470.

• The case of Joshua P. Clark, 23, was adjourned to Nov. 3. He is charged with the Misdemeanor of Trespass, based on an incident at recently for being on the Fish Hatchery property at night while the premises were closed to the public.

• The case of Joshua D. Persons, 24, of River St. Warrensburg was adjourned to Nov. 3. He is charged with third-degree Assault based on an incident Oct. 8 on river St. Police said that about noon that day he pushed a woman with both hands against a rock wall, causing an abrasion and bleeding to her lower back.

• The cases of Pauline Buckler, Delila Fish, Raymond Hernandez, Wayne Kennedy Jr., Wayne Kennedy Sr., Claude Kuzmiak, John Peluso, Tyrone Tanko were adjourned to Nov 3. The case of Laurie Kennedy was adjourned to Nov. 17. The case of Moschera V. Torres was dismissed prior to hearing.

•100 Years Ago – November, 1910• Man drowns after horses drag him into lake William Gage, 26, of Luzerne met his death in a peculiar manner. A spirited team of horses owned by Edwin J. Worden ran away and plunged into the water near the steamboat dock at the head of Lake George, carrying the young man with them. One of the animals was drowned while the other one escaped when they became separated from the wagon. Mr. Worden had warned the boy that he might have difficulty in handling the horses.

Seneca Ray Stoddard faces foreclosure In an action before the state Supreme Court at Lake George, attorney Frank Morehouse appeared for Mary Vermillia of Glens Falls in an action against photographer Seneca Ray Stoddard and others of that city to foreclose on a mortgage. The defendants failed to appear and after the plaintiff had been sworn in her own behalf, Justice Van Kirk instructed Morehouse to prepare findings preliminary to the issuance of a decree of judgment.

No payback for severe injuries The action of Joseph Frenche against the International Paper Co. began Oct. 29, 1910 in the Supreme Court at Lake George to recover damages for negligence. The young man was injured at the Fort Edward mill two years ago. He was employed as a third hand on a paper machine where he was drawn into the machinery and his skull was fractured, one side of his face was paralyzed, he became totally deaf in one ear and other bad injuries were suffered.

The justice, after listening to a number of witnesses, decided that the evidence was insufficient to constitute a cause of action.

Construction worker loses leg As a result of a serious injury sustained months ago while at work on the new Fort William Henry Hotel at Lake George, Samuel G. Ray had his left leg amputated just above the knee at the Glens Falls Hospital. (Note…The new hotel was being built with finances coming from the Delaware and Hudson Railroad Co. and the opening date was scheduled for June 17, 1911. There were several serious accidents suffered in the rush to get the 80 room hotel completed.)

Farm hand caught red-handed On Oct. 28 1910, a young farm laborer employed by Luke

Rist of Bakers Mills yielded to the temptation to steal $29 from his employer ’s trunk and $53 from the savings of George Barney, a fellow workman on the farm. The money was missed and the boy was at once suspected of taking it.

A warrant was secured for his arrest and Constable Charles Baker was sent for. Baker caught his suspect and the fellow was arraigned before Justice Ellsworth Ross where, after pleading guilty, he was sentenced to one year ’s imprisonment in the Albany penitentiary. The prisoner was a former resident of Stony Creek.

Thurman news Eddie Rounds shot a fine 150-pound doe and Nathan Fuller shot a 250-pound buck at the fish ponds.

Herbert Rounds went out to feed his pig one night recently and found the porker gone. He looked high and low for it but couldn’t even find the squeal. Next morning when he went out to visit some traps he set out for foxes, he found the pig in one of them.

Mrs. Sanford J. Dow has bought a fine iron fence for the Reynolds Cemetery. The grounds outside of the fence were graded under the supervision of Edmund Barber of South Johnsburgh. Mrs. Dow bought the fence of the Coiled Spring Fence Co. of Winchester, Indiana and it is of a very fine, fancy design.

New house, up and ready On Nov. 15, 1910, Dr. and Mrs. Charles B. Cunningham of Warrensburgh moved into their new house on Elm St. Contractor George E. Farrar has finished his work and is proud of the job. The heating apparatus and plumbing were installed by H.J. McAuley and the grounds were graded by local landscape artist Edward Noble. The house is a great addition to the beauty of Elm Street. (Note…This house at 32 Elm, next door south of the Richards library, was for many years in my time the residence and office of Dr. Clinton Lawrence. Today it is the home of Darryl Frazier and family.)

Disease causes alarm and fear A decided stand against any proposed plan of the Metropolitan Insurance Co. to establish a tuberculosis hospital on Mount McGregor was taken at a meeting of physicians and taxpayers held at the YMCA at Saratoga. (Note: today Grant Cottage and the Mount McGregor Correctional Facility stand on this property in Moreau.)

The tuberculosis exhibit under the joint auspices of the State Department of Health and the State Charities Aid Association, which is touring a number of counties, arrived in Warrensburgh Oct. 22, 1910 and was sat up in the parish rooms of the Church of the Holy Cross ready for the public’s inspection. A large crowd was expected to attend but due to inclement weather the turnout was poor.

News roundabout Gray squirrels are said to be rapidly multiplying throughout the Adirondacks and game protectors contend that a closed season is not necessary.

A dollar or more starts a savings account at the Emerson National Bank in Warrensburgh where it will grow in size.

The pay for jurors at the Supreme Court in Lake George has risen from $2 to $3 a day and there are many applicants.

Haskell Brothers of Warrensburgh has choice Ballston sausage on sale for 22 cents a pound.

There are 901 names on the registers in the three election districts in Johnsburgh Corners. The repairs there at the Methodist Church are nearly completed and a little more work on the interior will be done.

Mrs. John L. Russell has closed Bonnie Brae Villa, her summer home in Warrensburgh and returned on Nov. 3, 1910 to her winter residence in Troy. (Note…This mansion, later called Chalet Swiss, stood until 1980 behind today’s Warrensburg Post Office, in front of the horse barn that is still standing. In later years, it hosted a bed and breakfast, but it burned to the ground under suspicious circumstances during a economic downturn. Many believe arson was the cause, but no arrests were ever made.)

Ernest C. “Kid” Manzer has sold his half interest in the Echo Lake Poultry Farm to Jay West and will move into the village of Warrensburgh and take up residence in Lewis Thomson’s tenant house on the corner of Hudson St. and Woodward Avenue. (Note: This house could have been one that might have stood on the north corner of Woodward Avenue, now a vacant lot, or more probably the house standing behind it today owned by Harley Fisk, once the first home of the Adirondack Journal.)

Writers’ readings series moves to Bolton The Second Thursday readings of prose and poetry — routinely hosted monthly at Willows Bistro in Warrensburg — will be held Nov. 11 in Bolton Landing.

The presentation of regional writers will occur at Trees Gift & Book Store on Lake Shore Drive beginning at 7 p.m.

The change in venue is due to a vacation of bistro owner Debbie Swan.

Four writers will share short selections from their works.

Featured will be David J. Pitkin of Chestertown — author of “Ghosts of the Northeast,” and several other volumes of paranormal research and experiences; Lee Merrett of Queensbury and Schroon Lake — author of “Reflections” and “Storied Landscapes;” Beti Spangel of Schroon Lake, reading from a memoir, “Gift Horse;” and Nancy Kimball, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator from Diamond Point, reading about her work. In addition to enjoying a highly successful sports season, the Bolton High School Varsity Girls Soccer Team held a bake sale Oct. 14 at Stewart's in Bolton on Oct. 16. The effort was under the guidance of their coach Patrick Morency.

The team also participated in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K Walk held Oct. 24 at Queensbury High School. With contributions from the school and community, the team collected a total of $503 which they donated to the American Cancer Society.

Gibson trounces Murphy in Congressional race

Gibson of Kinderhook defeated freshman U.S. Congressman Scott Murphy (D-Glens Falls) Tuesday by a solid margin after a contentious campaign battle that had been under national scrutiny.

Former President Bill Clinton and U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand drew about 1,500 people to a rally for U.S. Rep. Scott Murphy Monday, an event which included strong speeches heralding reform accomplished by Democrats over the past year.

Such ideas, however, were soundly rejected Tuesday at the polls, as Murphy was defeated by challenger Chris Gibson in a substantial margin — even the top Democratic heavyweights couldn’t swing the local electorate’s passion for reining in deficit spending and containing the influence of government.

Gibson, a retired Army Colonel, had campaigned on reining in deficit spending, repealing the national health care bill and focusing on conservative principles to jumpstart the lagging economy.

Late Tuesday night, when the unofficial vote tally showed Gibson leading 56 to 44 percent , Murphy conceded and Gibson offered an enthusiastic victory speech in separate venues in Saratoga Springs.

In his address, Gibson showed diplomacy by noting that Murphy, as a successful businessman, would likely help in boosting the region’s economy.

Murphy, who was voted into office in a special election in spring 2009 by narrowly defeating Jim Tedisco, thanked his supporters and observed that he and other legislators had accomplished a lot of important reform legislation during his short tenure.

According to vote tallies compiled at 2:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Warren County Board of Elections, Warren County voters cast 9,661 votes for Scott Murphy and 11,511 for Gibson; representing 54.4 percent for Gibson versus 45.6 percent for Murphy.

Boys Soccer Hartford 2, North Warren 1 Section II quarterfinal HARTFORD -- North Warren Cougars fought to the finish against Hartford — one of the best teams in the region — in a Class D Section II quarterfinal matchup Friday, but lost 21 in overtime.

The Cougars had exerted similar effort a week earlier, when they held Hartford to a 0-0 tie.

Friday’s game was the fourth straight overtime win for the Tanagers.

Hartford’s Charles Cornell kicked the winning shot under pressure, booting the score from a close distance 21 seconds into the first overtime.

North Warren had scored the first goal, about 20 minutes into the game. Joe Aiken went face-to-face with the Hartford goalie, and Sophomore Ethan Schenke finished off the drive.

Cougar Thom Pereau, known for his speed and keen reflexes, was matched up with Cornell, and he contained his efforts until the final traffic jam in front of the net. Hartford answered back with their goal.

Although the Tanagers pounded the North Warren goal with attempted shots, Cougar goalie Kristian Seeley blocked one after another to keep them in the game — until the final score.

The Cougars finish their season 8-7-2, ahead of the record of the past several years’ soccer teams.

Lake George 3, Berne-Knox 0 Section II Class C opener QUEENSBURY — Lake George combined a relentless offensive attack and impenetrable defense over more than two hours to shut out Berne-Knox 3-0 in a Class C Sectional showdown Oct. 28 at Queensbury High School.

Despite Lake George’s tough, physical play, Berne-Knox refused to relent, forcing the game into a penalty-kick round.

The Warriors scored on their first three kicks to win the round 3-0.

Lake George goalie Ryan Moll saved several of the penalty kicks. Scoring for the Warriors were David Bruno, Mason Vreugde and Carson Lambert. Moll tallied five saves in regulation while his teammates outshot Berne-Knox 23-6.

Warrior volleyball continues The class C bracket in the Section II Volleyball was split this year into two groups, Class C — in which lake George is competing at the No. 3 seed, and the CC Class. Five of the teams in these divisions are undefeated.

Lake George (11-1) was scheduled to open their Sectional campaign at 5 p.m. Thursday against sixth-seeded Stillwater (6-4) of the Wasaren League. The semifinals are to take place 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday Nov. 6 in Saratoga, and the finals will take place on Nov. 11.

Girls Soccer Northville 3, Bolton 0 Sectional quarterfinal BROADALBIN — Despite a tough defensive effort by the Bolton Girls Soccer team in a Class D Sectional semifinal matchup, their 2010 season came to a close Oct. 30 in a 0-3 loss to the talented Northville squad.

Bolton Coach Patrick Morency credited several players when releasing statistics to the media. He noted that Rosie Denne made 12 stops and midfielder Hallie Maranville played a tough defense and Liz Parker, Olivia Seaman and Taylor Grover all played well up front. Northville's early aggressive offense, however, with two first-half goals to their credit, created a margin difficult for Bolton to overcome. Northville led Bolton 12-9 in shots on goal and 4-3 on corner kicks.

Bolton 3, Loudenville Christian 2 (OT) NORTH COLONIE -- The Bolton Girls Soccer team scored an upset Oct. 27 against a talented Capital Region team by combining teamwork, determination and a steely defense to wear down their opponent.

Bolton's Liz Parker played a critical role, as she helped set up a tying goal to bring Bolton back from a deficit in the second half, then kick in the winning goal in overtime.

Taylor Grover showed off her offensive skills as she scored both of Bolton's two regulation goals. Coach Patrick Morency credited Midfielder Hallie Maranville for her tough defense in the win.

Bolton led in shots-on goal with a margin of 17-7.

No. Warren advances to finals North Warren 3, Salem 2 CHESTERTOWN -- With tough defense, teamwork and a determined spirit, the North Warren Field Hockey team powered their unparalleled 2010 campaign to new heights as they defeated Salem 3 to 2 Oct. 29 in a game that lasted through two overtime periods.

The Lady Cougars dominated play, outshooting the Generals 17-2 and 24-5 in corners. Salem's goalie kept her team in the game with 18 strong saves under constant pressure through 60 minutes of regulation and two sudden death overtimes. Cougar Lindsey Schlaeg scored her team’s first goal in round one of penalty strokes, but a Salem player managed to get her shot past Cougar goalie Morgan Tennyson to tie the game. Round 2 of sudden-death strokes was intense, with Cougar's leading scorer, Kiera Warner slamming her shot off the right goal post missing a game winner by inches. Soon after, Cougar senior Annie Bennett crushed a shot to the upper left of the goal giving North Warren a 2-1 lead.

Under pressure, a Salem player got a shot past Cougar goalie Morgan Tennyson to re-tie the game. Cougar Krista Millington, who played outstanding defense, then shot a reversestick stroke in what proved to be the winning goal. Morgan Tennyson made a great game-ending save sending North Warren to the Class "C" finals.

Second-seeded North Warren advanced to the Class C championship game against No. 1 Greenwich in Schuylerville on Thursday at 7 p.m.

North Warren fans, parents, and students have been celebrating the team’s success this season, which evolved stepby-step after the team was ranked last in the league.

Pure determination and focus on their goal of athletic prominence has taken them to the top position in the Adirondack League and in contention against far larger schools for the regional crown, sports observers note.

Greenwich 8, Warrensburg 0 Section II semifinal GREENWICH -- The Burgher ’s 2010 Field Hockey campaign — that experienced a late-season resurgence — ended Oct. 29 in the face of a balanced attack from the big, strong and skilled Greenwich team that is likely to compete in the state championship tournament.

Warrensburg was shut out 8-0 in the Section II Class C semifinal game by the balanced Greenwich team, which combined tough physical play with speed and good passing for the win.

Six Greenwich players scored in the showdown. Greenwich advances to play North Warren in the title game.

Not backing down from the persistent Greenwich attack in which the Witches outshot the Burgers 21-6, goalie Rebecca Persons tallied 12 saves for Warrensburg.

Cross-country Cougars win League crown as Erickson captures first

QUEENSBURY — North Warren's Megan Erickson won the girls' individual race in the Adirondack League Cross Country Championship tournament Oct. 28 at Queensbury High School on Thursday, October 28, 2010. Erickson finished first in the 3.1-mile race with a time of 20:48. Finishing second in the race was Kacey O'Brien of Lake George with a strong performance. North Warren's Ashley Maresca was fourth overall in 22:57. Mallory Wolfe and Cassie Maday took sixth and seventh.

Erickson's win was the crucial element in the Cougars capturing the girls’ team League title with 28 points. Lake George came in second place.

In the boys' Varsity race, Lake George standout Willie Underwood won in 17:49 to lead the way for the Warrior boys team winning the League title, followed by North Warren.

The Section II championships are Nov. 5.

Both the Warriors and the C the Cougars are in top contention for the Class D title for their teams.

VORHEESVILLE — Despite holding off the persistent, athletic offense of Vorheesville for half a game Tuesday by taking away their scoring opportunities, Lake George succumbed to the efforts of the large Capital Region school late in the second half, in a 2-0 defeat. Lake George finishes up their 2010 season with the Adirondack League crown and a 12-4-2 record.

Lake George 2, Berne-Knox 0 Section II opening round LAKE GEORGE -- Emily DeWaard scored one goal and assisted on another as Lake George’s powerful, deep offense defeated Berne-Knox 2-0 Oct. 29 in the opening round of the Class C Section II Girls Soccer competition.

With the win, the versatile, experienced Warriors advanced to the tournament quarterfinals to a matchup against Vorheesville, seeded third.

The Warriors scored their first goal when Emma Underwood, DeWaard and Kathleen Goutos combined in a strategic team effort to score the shot. Caroline Murphy and DeWaard combined for the second goal.

Lake George led Berne-Knox 13-8 with shots on goal and 8-2 on Corner kicks. Goalie Sophie Bruno made six saves as she recorded her 10th shutout this year as Lake George boosted their 2010 record to 12-4-2.

Barbara Blum honored for her imaginative programs

Also to be awarded is Greg Beckler and his family’s destination Natural Stone Bridge & Caves, the chamber’s first-ever Business of the Year.

HORICON — For years, Barbara Blum of Brant Lake has been inspiring children and adults to both unleash their creative talents and gain awareness about the natural environment.

In doing so, she has enriched the lives of many in area communities, her associates and area officials said this week.

On Nov. 11, Blum will be recognized for her years of volunteer work by the North Warren Chamber of Commerce at its annual V.I.P. Banquet to be held at Jimbo’s Club, Brant Lake.

Through the Friends of the Horicon Library, Blum has developed a series of programs featuring crafts and environmental themes, and they’ve gained a considerable following in the region, chamber president Barbara Thomas said. Those programs include observing Monarch butterflies, constructing bird houses and bird feeders, as well as holiday-themed craft sessions for Easter, Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, she said. A program Blum presented for adults, instructed attendees on how to construct authentic Adirondack Pack baskets, at which Blum is very skilled, Thomas said.

“Because of all her work, the Horicon Library has become a social center in the community,” she said. “Hundreds of children attend her various programs — and adults, too.”

Horicon Librarian Linda Hoyt said Blum knows how to combine learning with interactive elements that appeal to children, recalling a session on pirates in which not only the children dressed up as buccaneers, but the adults, too. The program included prompting children to read about pirates and their adventures, Hoyt recalled.

“She loves children, and her programs are imaginative and educational,” Hoyt said. “Everybody loves her sessions, and she always draws a large crowd.”

Hoyt said Blum knows how to grip children’s attention. On a recent program on Native American culture, Blum dressed up in a real deerskin dress made with a hide from a deer her husband shot. This program featured a large bag of stuffed animals

she passed out to children, which kept their attention focused, Hoyt said.

“Barbara is very enthusiastic about things she does,” Hoyt said. “She’s a true asset to our community.”

Elna Meader of the Library Friends group noted Blum’s programs are well-known regionally, and they draw attendees from quite a distance.

“Barbara is just a whirlwind — she’s put Brant Lake on the map,” Meader said. “Due to Barbara, there’s something going on worthwhile for kids all the time in Brant Lake — she works nonstop — she’s just fabulous.”

Friends member Cathy Morrisseau of Latham and Brant Lake offered a reason why.

“Barbara’s a person who will always make time for everybody else,” Morrisseau said. “She never says ‘No.’” Contacted last weekend, Blum deferred credit to the dozen or so volunteers who help her plan and conduct the programs.

“I enjoy nature and a lot of crafts, and I just like to work with kids,” she said. “But, if I didn’t have so many dedicated helpers, these programs couldn’t be successful.”

Blum said she is wary of the spotlight that is now shining on her and her accomplishments.

“Presenting these programs and working with children is just part of the charm of living in a small town,” she said.

Blum is active in a variety of other community pursuits, including the local Krafty Kritters, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Horicon Fire Co. and the Horicon Historical Society, her friends said.

Thomas noted Blum teaches fly fishing at sessions held at the Crossroads Country Store, and she’s been featured on a regional television cable channel as a local fishing guide. Thomas also praised Blum for reviving the traditional Great Brant Lake Duck Race — which hundreds now annually enjoy — and helping out with North Warren Chamber functions including the Pug Parade & Show.

“Barbara is very deserving of the chamber ’s V.I.P honor,” Thomas said.

Natural Stone Bridge & Caves and Greg Beckler honored for enterprise, hard work CHESTERTOWN — A destination steeped in history yet brimming with new attractions has been awarded for its innovation and success.

Natural Stone Bridge and Caves of Pottersville has been named as the North Warren Chamber of Commerce’s first-ever Business of the Year.

For 200 years, Natural Stone Bridge and Caves has drawn tourists and nature enthusiasts who seek to experience its fascinating billion-year-old geology.

By stagecoach at first and later by station wagons, families took rides upstate to explore the geological wonder.

But while many other destinations have withered, Natural Stone Bridge and Caves has experienced a resurgence in popularity, primarily due to new activities launched by owner/operator Greg Beckler and clan.

This innovation and evolution in the face of an unsteady economy is why Natural Stone Bridge and Caves was chosen as the 2010 Business of the Year, chamber president Barbara Thomas said.

“Greg and his family members are always coming up with new, fun things for families to do,” she said, noting she has tried out several of the new offerings, including the winter snowshoeing. The Stone Bridge park’s snowshoeing experience, offered this winter for its first full season, includes hikes to see the park’s sink holes, caves, stone bridge and waterfalls in their pristine winter splendor.

The winter snowshoeing trail system is now 6.5 miles long.

In recent years, Thomas said, the Beckler family has added guided cave adventure tours, gemstone mining, Frisbee golf, rock-climbing walls — to appeal to an ever wider audience.

“They’ve added tons of activities that appeal to today’s action-oriented tourists,” Thomas said. “They’re always innovating, introducing new ideas — they never sit still.”

Beckler ’s eight years of dedicated work as president of the North Warren Chamber of Commerce also led to the award, she said.

Among his accomplishments as chamber president were upgrading the chamber website, leading an effort to develop a new logo, extending the group’s influence and networking with other regional chambers, Thomas said.

“Greg accomplished a lot in moving the chamber forward,” she said.

Beckler said Monday he was pleased Natural Stone Bridge and Caves was chosen for the award.

“This is cool because Stone Bridge and Caves is a cornerstone tourist attraction for the region and my family owned and ran it through so many years, ” he said. “We’re proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish and we’re pleased to be recognized for our efforts.”

Ski trains, dome cars, dinner trips and freight traffic proposed for county railway

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — Warren County’s existing scenic railway could soon have gracious dome cars, offer upscale dinner excursions, bring well-heeled skiers from downstate to Gore Mountain and offer affordable commuting for local workers — if a rail enterprise seeking a contract with the county has their way.

Such a multi-faceted railway service took a step closer to reality Tuesday when Warren County Supervisors decided to interview and negotiate with the railway company, Iowa Pacific Holding, LLC which offers 10 railways in the rural U.S. and two in England.

Iowa Pacific was one of three firms submitting proposals to operate the county railway, run for the past 12 years by Upper Hudson River Railroad. UHRR and Codorus Creek Railway Co. of Pennsylvania were the other two firms submitting proposals, but the county leaders shelved those in favor of Iowa Pacific.

Supervisors said that UHRR’s proposal wasn’t viable because it didn’t include a plan for growth, and it called for expensive subsidies by the county for passengers and train trips, including several dollars per ticket sold and up to $5,000 per scheduled trip. The other two proposals didn’t call for such subsidies.

Iowa Pacific is operator of upscale scenic train lines including the Mount Hood Railroad in Oregon and the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad, which was named by USA today as one of the 10 best scenic rail routes in the nation.

To develop a robust passenger service, the proposal pledges that Iowa Pacific will invest about $300,000 in marketing. Such efforts are to include developing partnerships with various area accommodations and attractions in offering train-trip packages. It also says the company will develop group and corporate travel and chartered services, bringing thousands of people to visit North Creek, Riparius, Thurman, Stony Creek, Hadley, Corinth and other stops along the railway.

To jumpstart such ridership, Iowa Pacific pledges to bring in travel planners from all over the nation, offering free introductory excursions.

In addition, Iowa Pacific has pledged to “vigorously pursue” developing routine freight service they say could boost the region’s economy by transporting garnet, stone and cement products, timber, and forest products at a substantial savings over truck freight.

Warren County Economic Development Corporation President Len Fosbrook recently hailed the development of such freight service because it would create new jobs and boost commerce and industry in the rural areas of the county.

Iowa Pacific’s proposal includes paying the county $10 for each freight car traveling on the railroad and $2 for each passenger car.

Supervisors expressed an urgency to meet with Iowa Pacific officials with an aim to work out a potential agreement to meet the firm’s Dec. 1 deadline.

Geraghty contacted O’Keefe, and both sought the state to double-check their figures, Geraghty said.

O’Keefe said he was told by state officials that the error in calculation was due to tax receipts that weren’t properly credited from a seasonal business in the county.

Geraghty said the 2011 budget, ready for formal presentation to the public at 10 a.m. Friday, would not be changed to reflect the windfall.

He said the money, to be received in the fourth quarter payments, would likely be applied to boost the county fund balance, depleted to substandard levels in recent years.

“Any time the county can pick up $360,000 or so, it’s excellent news for taxpayers,” he said.

millions of dollars in trains, infrastructure, marketing and introductory trips to launch the railway’s success. The firm predicts that they’d have more than 500 train trips scheduled annually when the railway is in full swing.

They’ve proposed to operate the following routine services through the county at regular intervals, most of them daily in season: a ski train from the Saratoga Springs rail station; a scenic excursion train; a dinner cruise train; and special event trains; plus a feeder train service to connect the county trains to Saratoga Springs with the busy Rensselaer Amtrak station, Vermont rail service and passengers traveling from New York City.

In the proposal, for which they are seeking approval by Dec. 1, Iowa Pacific offers to bring in domed club cars, air conditioned coaches built for $1.7 million each, and various locomotives.

Iowa Pacific proposes that the ski train would roll on weekends and select weekdays in winter between Saratoga Springs and North Creek. Their feeder train service would provide convenient passenger connections to Albany, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York City.

Their proposal estimates that an average of 420 passengers will ride each of 47 annual ski trains, consisting of two dome cars and four coaches, a lineup that would have a maximum capacity of 770. Their excursion trains would run from spring through October, with 150 trips planned, and a predicted average ridership of 270 passengers per day. Excursions trains would have planned side-trips into local villages for shopping and exploring.

The dinner cruise train would include a four-course meal and some of the trips would feature murder-mystery themed excursions. Such trips would be operated from Saratoga Springs to

Good neighbors helped others in many ways Did you help out a neighbor Oct. 23 on national Make a Difference Day? We have heard of a few folks that live by the Golden Rule and help out in their community many times during the year.

We will mention those who have when we hear about their deeds — feel free to call in such good news. Here are a few we’ve heard about so far: Cheryl and Howard Greenholtz have been offering their time and talent by repairing or painting items that are donated to the North Country Ministries store, making the items looks new again.

Then there is the young gentleman Dante Siletti who is proving to be a good neighbor by assisting others by stacking firewood, helping with chores and watching pets.

Also, Marilyn Youngblood has offered to help others in any way she can, including taking elderly and those with physical challenges to doctor appointments. She will help with young children as well and urges those with special needs to call her anytime at 623-9710.

Also on the list are Dick and Charlotte Needham who always seem to be helping out a neighbor. They also do not need a special day to be of assistance!

Jean Coulard and Barb Farrell, Geri Howe, Cliff Dureau and George Chonko, are some of the well-known volunteers in the area, who always seem to be helping out in the neighborhood.

There are many others who are routinely lending a hand in Thurman and I’m sure their names will be called in also, so just watch this column to know you are appreciated!

And over on Mud St., a fortunate lady had some extensive help from her grandsons; Matt, Howard and Jesse Greenholtz.

Last week, they built a ramp up to her porch which was recently reinforced by Gary Murray. She wishes to thank these boys for all they have accomplished.

Ambulance squad hosts costumed children

The Thurman Emergency Medical Services welcomed children from the area Sunday to a Halloween Party at their High Street headquarters, and the event included games, prizes, refreshments, and a mini-parade.

Winners of the costume awards were as follows: Most Original award went to Brent, Bailey and Ben Ackley dressed as Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny. Most Humorous award was presented to Bridgett Anaman, portraying a dragon. Scariest was Billy Arnold, who wore a skeleton getup.

Creepiest was Aiden Moulton as the grim reaper.

Chester From page 1 governmental operations amounts to $283,562, a reduction of $9,605 from the current year, Monroe said. the amount to be raised by taxes in 2011 for highway expenditures is $706,459, an increase of $96,108.

Two looming factors are responsible for the increase, Monroe said.

The planned cash purchase of a road grader for $208,000 plus a substantial increase in state retirement system costs both have prompted the increase, Monroe said. The state retirement system contributions on behalf of town highway workers are up $60,000 for 2011, he said.

Monroe added that the town has followed a practice of purchasing its highway equipment and vehicles on a cash basis, and the board recently voted to continue doing so with the grade — to save borrowing costs.

“We decided to stay on the path and pay cash,” he said.

Health insurance costs for town employees are projected to go up 27 percent unless the town board decides on adopting a new health-care insurance plan, he added. The town employees will be receiving a 2 percent increase in pay.

Another stress on town finances is the reduction of mortgage tax receipts by $75,000, a reflection that county-wide, far fewer houses are changing hands than in the past.

Also, sales tax revenue is expected to be lower than projected for this past year, he said.

The tax increase for 2011 would have been a lot steeper had it not been for an effort by the town court to aggressively collect unpaid traffic tickets. Through September, the court has raised $88,000 via such collections, or $58,000 more than budgeted. In 2009, the town collected a total of $185,000 in fines, primarily overdue, Monroe said. This extra revenue allowed the town to replenish its fund reserves, from which this year ’s budget uses $25,000 of unappropriated surplus.

Also a favorable element in the budget is a $35,000 increase in town refuse transfer station revenue.

Going it alone As a practice, the opportunity for enjoying complete and utter solitude is rapidly in danger of becoming a lost art. Possibly, it comes as a result of the difficulties involved in obtaining its primary ingredient, the opportunity to be alone.

It is certainly understandable, as wild areas are getting more uncommon amidst an ever encroaching world.

A recent report from the National Park Service reveals the sounds of civilization can now be heard in more than 30 percent of our nation’s wilderness areas.

Despite our best efforts to escape, we can no longer hide from the jets overhead, nor the entrails they leave behind on the blank sky.

Even after darkness engulfs the planet, the mysterious voids of the evening sky are not longer immune, as satellites or space stations intrude to leave a paw print on the blank, black blanket that once was the “Great Beyond.”

regularly use hand-held satellite phones to proclaim they’ve made it; as do astronauts. It has become impossible to escape the din of civilization. As a society, we are heading toward a time when, according to the New York Times, “portable phones, pagers, and data transmission devices of every sort will keep us terminally in touch.”

However, in a more important aspect, society has become almost terminally out of touch. Our innate need for genuine and constructive aloneness has been lost and forgotten and, in the process, so has a part

of all of us.

Over the years, I’ve learned there are times when I don’t need to be in touch or I just don’t want to be. Although humans are surely social animals, we also have a great need to spend time alone.

The scent of solitude provides us with the opportunity to enjoy the companionship of the only individual we will ever share our lives with from the beginning to end — oneself.

With practice, solitude teaches us how to deal with this single companion, how to put up with them and to get the best out of them.

However, without regular opportunities to spend time alone, we’ve become out of practice.

For all of time, man has sought and found such opportunities primarily in natural settings. Nature is where the earth whispers, yet in silence; it makes the loudest noise.

Solitude allows for sounds we can hear in our souls. It comes with a voice that visits during quiet periods of personal conversation. It happens outdoors because natural surroundings provide our best opportunities to be still, alone and quiet.

However, there is a great difference between being alone and loneliness. Solitude is quiet time we make for ourselves, while loneliness describes the pain of being alone. In nature, as we all know, we’re never alone.

Thoreau explained, “I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude.”

The interior of most hunting camps are rather spartan, but it is not furnishings that make “camp’ a special place. Rather, it is the location, which is often many miles removed from the usual environs of the camp’s inhabitants. It is a place that is purposely far “removed” from their everyday existance.

It is interesting to note in many societies that emphasize close-knit family patterns, there are also built-in loopholes to offer an individual an acceptable opportunity to escape, or a way to dissociate from society.

Listed among these loopholes are such activities as marathon running, trance dancing, vision quests and hunting.

In fact, it was while spending time alone in hunting camp I began writing this article. Although my camp is not located beyond the clatter of civilization, the roar of a nearby stream and the wind whistling in the pines make it seem as if it is.

There is a major difference between being alone and being lonely. Loneliness occurs when you are all alone and you come to realize you don’t really know

your only companion very well.

I recall the story of the Adirondacks’ most famous hermit, Noah John Rondeau. Beginning in 1914, he lived for more than 30 years in the wilds of the Cold River Valley, huddled in a small cabin located nearly 25 miles from the nearest gathering of civilization. He was the self-proclaimed “Mayor of Cold River City” — population of one.

Rondeau was an unusual hermit. He actually enjoyed people, but claimed he enjoyed the woods even more.

He earned a nickname as the “Tin Can Hermit” for his habit of hitting up hikers traveling along the Northville-Placid Trail for a few cans of grub, which he stored in the nearby Cold River. He came to town to trade furs for staples and often stayed over with a hand-

ful of local families.

Between 1946 and 1947, Rondeau spent the entire year in the woods. He maintained a very detailed journal, since he spent most of the time alone. One of his finest journal entries was in respect to solitude. As an avid, practitioner of the art, I’ve always enjoyed his entry for March 13.

“3/13/47: I have been at Cold River City for over a full year, much of the time alone with myself. I find that I am very good company!”

I hope you, too, can take a lone walk in the autumn woods, and enjoy the company.
