Approaching 100, Ruth McDowell savors each day

With her 100th birthday coming up, Chestertown native Ruth McDowell said this week that she truly enjoys her life, which she takes one day at a time.

“You can’t sit too long at my age, it just isn’t good for you,” she said, adding that when she watches baseball on television, she makes a point to walk through the house during the commercial breaks.

ATHOL — While Carl Paladino and Andrew Cuomo battle out their political drama for Governor and U.S. Rep. Scott Murphy spar for a seat in Congress, Tuesday’s election has one compelling local aspect: the leadership of Thurman town government.

With the abrupt resignation in July of former Supervisor Red Pitkin and board member James Ligon, two candidates have come forward to seek the supervisor ’s office, while the interim supervisor, appointed board member Al Vasak, declined to seek the post. Two are also vying for the board seat.

with diplomacy, avoiding outright criticism.

But the race has its compelling aspect: Evelyn Wood is 33 and Birdsall is 63, and the matchup challenges many residents’ stereotypes about age and gender as citizens are deciding who to vote for Tuesday, Nov. 2.

Wood, if elected, would be the youngest supervisor to lead Thurman, and only the second female to do so.

Birdsall said such a potential departure from tradition should not be an issue.

“It’s okay, she’s young but well educated,” he said.

However, he does cite his many years of experience as a farrier and town assessor as giving him a depth of experience that would be put to good use if elected.

As the resignation turmoil was ebbing in early July, Evelyn Wood, a Republican, announced she would be seeking the post. The timing of Pitkin’s resignation, however, excluded a primary vote for the Republican spot on the ballot, so she ran as an independent.

Weeks later, Tuck Birdsall, the town Republican Committee chairman, and the committee’s one other member, Ed Binder, together chose Birdsall as the endorsed G.O.P. candidate.

Warrensburg Town Court report Oct. 13 — Judge Richard Nissen presiding • The case of Patrick Cobb, 20, Prospect Street, Warrensburg was adjourned to Oct. 27. He is charged with trespass, based on a Sept. 20 incident occurring at 3:50 p.m.

Police said Cobb, a former Grand Union employee, entered the Warrensburg Grand Union and refused repeated requests to leave the store, although Grand Union barred him from entering any Grand Union store.

• The case of Kade A. Hamblin, 20, 21 Hudson St., Warrensburg, was adjourned to Oct. 27. He is charged with a felony of third-degree criminal mischief. Police said that on Sept. 30, Hamblin drove his Chevy Blazer 200, over the lawn of the Warren County Fish Hatchery and accelerated in a circular motion, tearing up the lawn — causing more than $250 worth of damage. He is also facing a misdemeanor charge of trespass for unlawfully being on the property at a time it was closed to the public, police said.

• The case of Jesse C. Arnold, 22 of Bowen Hill Road, Warrensburg, was adjourned to Oct. 27. He is charged with misdemeanor DWI based on an incident at 12:55 a.m Sept.

23. Following a traffic stop on River Street his blood alcohol level tested at 0.10, police said. He’s also charged with driving with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 or more.

• The case of Joshua G. Lylyk, Fort Ann was adjourned to Oct. 27. Lylyk is charged with the misdemeanor of thirddegree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehi-

cle based on an incident at 12:56 a.m. Sept. 5. Police said they detained him when he failed to halt at a stop sign at the Judd Bridge.

• The case of Bradley G. Persons, 69, River Street, Warrensburg was adjourned to Oct. 27. He is charged with the misdemeanor of second-degree harassment based on a incident occurring at 4:45 p.m. Sept. 10. Police said Persons threatened a woman when he said, “I’m sick of you, I’m going to kick your ass.” An order of protection was issued to shield the woman from contact with Persons.

• The case of James L. Straight, 48, State Route 9, Lake George, was adjourned to Oct. 27. He is charged with petit larceny in relation to incidents Sept. 26 and 27. Police said he stole two packs of Marlboro cigarettes, worth $18.76, from the Getty Station in Warrensburg.

• Judge Nissen granted an eviction of David and Joan Peters and Joan Reicher from a house at 241 River St. Wells Fargo Bank won the eviction — the three stayed at the property many months after the house was foreclosed upon.

• Danielle Hammond of Hudson Falls, renter of a property, was granted a judgement of $565 from her landlord

Warrensburg Museum starts new series On Thursday, Nov. 4, the Warrensburgh Museum of Local History will be open in the evening, from 6 to 8 .m., inaugurating the “First Thursdays” series.

This series offers evening hours once a month for those unable to visit during the day or on weekends, and the November installment will be focusing on local racing. Visitors are invited to bring memorabilia from the Stock Car Races held at Ashland Park, behind Ashe’s Hotel, occurring during the 1950s and 1960s. A special exhibit is planned in February on these races, and museum personnel would welcome hearing stories from old-timers about the races. They’d be happy to scan photos from that period for the enjoyment of museum visitors.

On Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11, the museum will be open during the day to introduce its new Veterans Appreciation Room. Exhibits honoring servicemen and women from the Civil War on are being developed. Hours for that day will be announced. The museum, located in the VFW Building at 3754 Main St., continues to be open during its regular hours, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Town Planning Board reviews land-use plans On Oct. 19, the Warrensburg Planning Board reviewed a site plan for 3971 Main St., where G.B. Properties LLC seeks to store equipment and supplies for National Grid for two to three months.

The board read a letter from the Adirondack Park Agency citing Northeastern Products, off Sweet Road in a “Low Intensity” zone, is seeking approval for industrial use to accommodate a log-debarking machine along with a variety of associated equipment. The firm’s application seeks a change in operating hours to 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and to allow continued operations of new wood shaving equipment in a building nearby.

Benefit dinner set for Operation Santa Claus WARRENSBURG — A spaghetti dinner to benefit Operation Santa Claus is to be held at the Masonic Temple Saturday, Nov. 6, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Spaghetti, roll, salad, dessert and beverage will be served. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children 4 through 12, and free for those 3 and younger. A silent auction is to be held. Tickets cost five for $1 or 30 tickets for $5. WCS students to present choral, band concert

thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — Anne Downes, physical education teacher and instructor in Warrensburg Central School District for nearly 30 years, has been honored with a statewide award for her work with area youth.

This 2010 “Amazing Person Award” — granted by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance — will be presented to Downes at the association’s annual statewide conference in November. She is one of 18 across the state to receive the award, and one of only several physical education teachers so awarded.

WCS Elementary principal Amy Langworthy said she nominated Downes for the award due to her long-standing work in encouraging youth to develop and maintain fitness.

Downes has accomplished this work both during school time, and volunteering extra hours to the mission.

Langworthy observed that Downes conducts after-school fitness clubs, early-hour jump rope sessions, running groups and swimming programs — on her own time. Also, she organized this past year ’s 5K Burgher Dash, a charity footrace, Langworthy said.

“Anne knows what’s healthy for kids, and she’s dedicated to promoting lifetime fitness,” Langworthy said. “She’s a very selfless person and cares deeply about others.”

Downes noted that she’s taken a different track in her career than most physical education teachers.

Most instructors focus on coaching varsity sports, specifically on attaining the most wins for their teams.

She was following this routine path for a while after coming to Warrensburg Central in 1982, but discovered other aspects were more important than season victory tallies — like promoting lifelong practices of good health.

“I realized I wasn’t the best at winning those games, and I stepped back and put things into a new perspective,” she said, noting after serving as volleyball and basketball coach at the high school level for years, she decided to focus on physical education and fitness, particularly at the elementary level.

Festivities for Halloween have been scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 31, in both Warrensburg and the town of Chester.

In Warrensburg, the traditional Halloween Parade through town will form at 4 p.m. in front of the Warrensburg Health Center. Soon after, it will proceed down Main Street and Stewart Farrar Avenue and Elm Street, ending at the Warrensburg Elementary School, where costumes will be judged and awards distributed. The parade is sponsored by the Warrensburg Volunteer Fire Co. In Chestertown, the Chester-Horicon Youth Commission is holding a Halloween Parade on the same day. The parade will line up at 3:45 p.m. at the old Chester Firehouse on Church Street, step off at 4 p.m. sharp and march, weather permitting, to the Chestertown Municipal Center, where refreshments will be served.

Everyone in the community is welcome to attend, from the young to the young at heart.

Macabre jailhouse fantasy Beecher Faber was brought from Dannemora Prison back to the county jail at Lake George on Oct. 19, 1910 by Deputy Sheriff William Hackett of Glens Falls to await his third trial for the alleged killing of waitress Maude Ryan in a Glens Falls restaurant about two years ago. His conviction of death was recently reversed by the court of appeals and he was granted a new trial.

In an interview at the jail, Faber told a remarkable story of a pact between himself and Frank Jackson, the Hudson Falls man who was electrocuted Jan. 5, 1910 for the murder of his wife, in which Jackson was to return to Faber after his death. Jackson and Faber, during their confinement in the death-house at Dannemora prison, were students of psychology and Jackson believed that he could come back after his death and tell Faber whether he had a chance to escape the electric chair.

“He couldn’t come back,” said Faber in a reply to the question as to whether his friend kept his promise.

A birds-eye view of Canada Warrensburgh newspaper readers were excited to receive the news that aeronauts Alan R. Hawley and Augustus Post had escaped the jaws of death and on Oct. 19, 1910 had landed their balloon “America II” in the forests near the Perebonka River, north of Lake Chilogona in the Canadian wilds.

They had drifted away from St. Louis on Oct. 7, 1910 aboard the balloon in the international race. They had not been heard of for over 130 hours.

The Dusseldorf II which also was feared lost finally landed near Kiskisink, 132 miles north of Quebec.

Young horse bleeds to death Bert Robbins was driving his horse on his farm near Bakers Mills. He and his hired man were taking off the box from a heavy wagon when the horse became frightened and ran away. While jumping over a fence a stake ran into his neck, making a severe wound. The animal bled to death in only a few minutes. It was a young horse and was valued at $200,

William Chandler, 21, died Oct. 11, 1910 at the home of his mother, Mrs. Henry Daggett in North Caldwell, of tuberculosis of the joints. He had been ill since he was a young boy and for the past two or three years he was almost entirely helpless. He bore his sufferings with rare patience and fortitude and was always cheerful. Well prepared for the hereafter, death came as a welcome visitor.

William Henry Morehouse, 81, died suddenly on Oct. 19, 1910 while at work framing timber for a building near the junction lot on Edwards Hill, Bakers Mills. He leaves an aged widow with whom he had been married for 60 years and two sons, Douglas and John Morehouse, all of Bakers Mills. He was buried in the Bates Cemetery.

Hit a bump, took a header Francis B. Farrar was riding to Kellum Pond on a bicycle and took a header and struck the ground on his head and one shoulder, sustaining quite a severe scalp wound and spraining his shoulder. He was unconscious for a time and when he recovered his senses he managed to reach a camp on the pond where his brother, George E. Farrar had gone earlier with his automobile. “Frank” was taken home where Dr. Goodman attended him.

Candidate Emerson a shoe-in A picture of Hon. James A. Emerson of Warrensburgh, northern New York’s strongest advocate of good roads and a candidate for state senator in the 33rd district, may be seen in the window or on the walls of nearly every residence and business place in Warrensburgh. This is a strong indication that there will be few votes cast against Mr. Emerson in his home town.

Hot time in the woods While hunting recently in the forest, Lewis Robbins of Bakers Mills became separated from his companions and seeing that he could not get back to their camp until late, built a fire and laid down beside it to rest for a while. He fell asleep and rolled near the blaze, his clothing catching fire.

Wood offers diligence, energy and fresh ideas!

To the editor: I’d like to share with the citizens of Thurman what I have learned about Evelyn Wood and why I believe she is quite qualified to become our supervisor.

The first time I meet Evelyn was after a town board meeting. Upon hearing that we had farming in common, I introduced myself and chatted with her. Soon after, my husband and I visited Evelyn’s family farm. Evelyn’s parents live in an old farmhouse, with Evelyn, her husband Andrew and their two daughters living nearby in a new home. The two households represent the fourth and fifth generations of Woods that have farmed here since the 1790s. On the Wood farm, you will find a jersey cow, a horse, a couple of ducks and a flock of chickens in the barnyard; a large garden and root cellar by the house — all surrounded by large, meticulously manicured fields framed with ancient rock walls.

As a teenager, Evelyn worked at the Circle L Ranch in Thurman. After graduating from high school, Evelyn stayed on the farm and attended ACC, earning an Associate’s Degree in liberal arts, humanities and Social Science. She then took on a full-time job at the Encore paper mill, saving enough money to attend SUNY Plattsburgh and earn her Bachelor ’s Degree in English Literature. Not wanting to leave Thurman, Evelyn commuted to Plattsburgh for her studies. After college, she worked as a desk clerk at the Super 8 Motel, and was promoted to manager. Since then, Evelyn and her husband continue to live on the farm where for the past few years Evelyn has been caring for her children and serving as Thurman Cemetery Superintendent — working above and beyond the call of duty for the betterment of town cemeteries.

Having an interest in local politics for years, Evelyn often attended board meetings when her Mother Diane Wood sat on the town board. Evelyn’s continued interest in our local government and love for her community is evident by her faithful attendance at every single town fiscal meeting, regular board meeting, plus workshops and special meetings, except one, for the past two years. Her intelligent questions and comments at these meetings prove that she is a well-informed woman, and is interested in honest, open government and supportive of the rights of townfolk.

News roundabout The rain of Oct. 8, 1910 broke the drought and there has been fewer autumns better than this one. Many local weather prophets are predicting more warm weather in November as they say the moon is “way south.”

A Republican rally was held at the Empire Theatre on South St., Glens Falls on Oct. 22, 1910 and the overflow meeting was held at Monument Square over on Glen Street.

Abram Wing, 75, one of the oldest residents of Fort Edward and a descendant of the founder of Glens Falls, died Oct. 14, 1910. (Note: Abraham Wing and his son-in-law Ichabod Merritt came in the summer of 1763 to settle Wing’s Falls, later known as Glens Falls.)

Wesley Morehouse of Sodom is having a hard tussle with rheumatism in his hip. In Warrensburgh Earl Herrick has entered the employ of John G. Hunt to learn the plumber ’s trade.

Edward Hadden took on Dudley Adams’ job in the Hudson Valley power house while “Dud” was in Stony Creek after a 160-pound buck which he brought home with him.

Frank Danahy, 50, died at his home in Chestertown. He was buried in St. Cecilia’s Cemetery, Warrensburgh.

With the unexpected vacancy in the office of Supervisor, Evelyn Wood, a registered Republican, announced her candidacy. Since the end of July, she has attended all of the County Board of Supervisors meetings and a majority of the Board’s committee meetings. She is already well-versed in the Association of Towns’ law manual — she is dedicated to learning the state’s rules and regulations effecting local government with the aforementioned handbook and many other manuals designed for local government officers. Clearly, Evelyn Wood has put forth great effort to prepare herself for the job of Town Supervisor.

Former Supervisor Red Pitkin resigned July 31, and the deadline for circulating a Republican or Democratic petition was the middle of July — Evelyn had no choice other than to circulate an independent petition. Her repeated requests to the Thurman Republican Committee to be considered for the certificate of nomination, which would allow her to appear on the ballot as a Republican, were ignored.

On Election Day you will find Evelyn Wood on line J column 14 running as an independent with her party being the “Action Party.”

Evelyn Wood will bring to our town energy, tremendous work ethic, fresh ideas and a willingness to work for the community as a whole — all qualities needed for a local government we can be proud of. For educated, fair and untarnished leadership, please support Evelyn Wood for Supervisor.

Stalling on railroad deal threatens tourism

To the editor: I am a resident of Warren County and have been an employee of the Upper Hudson River Railroad since 1989 so I have read all the newspaper articles about the so-called “Train to Nowhere.” This statement and all the other questions such as why doesn’t the train come south of Riverside, why haven’t they run freight, and why were platforms built instead of stations have made me think of a few questions of my own.

Why did our county Board of Supervisors take almost ten months to re-write the contract specification for the new railroad operations contract? The present contract expires in December — and because of this delay, the new operators, whether it be the present company or another, will not have time to contract with Thomas the Tank Engine or any of the tour buses or school groups in time to get them on next year ’s schedule. Thus the area will miss out on thousands of visitors to the North Country that these events produce in the early spring.

I am surprised that the area chambers of commerce and the area tourism agencies have not questioned the Board of Supervisors as to this delay of posting. If it takes almost a year to re-write and post a new bid, how can they get anything done?

Thurman voters have important role The election spotlight in the region is shining on Thurman this year, as we are hosting the only contested races in Warren County for town leadership.

Get out and cast your vote at the Thurman Town Hall on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 2, any time between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Not only will you be voting for a governor, a comptroller, an attorney general, two senators, and a congressional representative, but also for a Thurman town supervisor, two town board members and a tax collector. Therefore, your vote is very important. Those in need of a ride to the polls can call Marilyn at 623-9710.

Activities and events in the North Country All are welcome to get a flu shot and pneumonia inoculation during the local visit Monday, Nov. 1, of the Warren County flu shot clinic. The event will be held at the Warrensburg Town Hall from 10 a.m. until noon. On Thursday, Nov. 4, the county health department nurses will be on duty in Thurman at the town hall from 11 a.m. to noon for the same function. And on the same date, Nov. 4, they will be in Stony Creek from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. for a clinic. And Friday, Nov. 5 they will be in Chestertown from 10:30 a.m. until noon. All those who are getting a shot should bring their insurance cards.

The Thurman Volunteer Fire Company will meet at 7 p.m.

Monday, Nov. 1, at the firehouse in Athol. Those wishing to become a volunteer are welcome to stop by.

Local rabies clinic coming up On Wednesday, Nov. 3, the Warren County Rabies Clinic will be at the Warrensburg Firehouse from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring your pets on leashes or in carriers. A $10 donation is requested for each pet. For details, call 761-6580.

The YMCA in Glens Falls will hold a free Family Fun Night Friday, Nov. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. Bring your family, all ages are welcome. There will be swimming, games and crafts for all to enjoy.

I noticed wages for our town workers went up about 2 percent, except one will get a 22 percent raise, and yet some others show no increase at all! In November there will not be a John Thurman Historical Society meeting due to Election Day. Everyone is urged to get out and cast your vote!

The Thurman town clerk will now be issuing the handicapped permits for those who qualify.

Fun is forecast for community spelling bee

A new event has been created for Bolton — one that combines the drama of a spelling bee, the intense competition of an adult sports matchup, the format of a television game show with some zany twists, and a generous dose of humor.

The new Bolton Community Spelling Bee — featuring adults as spellers and students as coaches — is likely to provide an evening of hilarious entertainment, according to one of the event’s organizers Laureen “Emma” Calautti.

Set for 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, the Bee is being held as a fundraiser for the Bolton Free Library, which has experienced a 90 percent cut in county funding.

Ten teams of three to five competitors each, have signed up to compete for a donation of $40, Calautti said. One of those teams is a squad of celebrities from the Adirondack Phantoms hockey team, based in Glens Falls.

Jeff Strief, of Happy Jacks, will be the moderator. Calautti said he has considerable emcee experience and is likely to keep folks well entertained, she explained.

“I know Jeff is going to knock the socks off our audience,” Calautti said.

The contest will include “Millionaire” game show aspects like a menu of “Lifelines” — purchased by spectators for their favorite teams. Lifeline tickets offer privileges to spell a word again, pass, or get an expert — Sally Defty dressed as Dame Edna — a flamboyant British television drag character — to spell the word for the competitor. Students will

be running through the audience hawking the Lifeline tickets.

In addition to a top $100 team prize, awards will be granted for best prize and most creative spelling, among others.

The format also includes a “Bribe Bowl” in which money can be placed to supposedly influence the judges, but don’t bet on it.

Calautti praised the businesses and area organizations for all their advance support.

“We hope it’s going to be a crazy, wonderful, fun time for the entire community,” she said.

Date set for annual Women’s Weekend After a very successful debut year, the Bolton Landing Chamber of Commerce is again sponsoring “Girlfriends’ Getaway in Bolton Landing.” This year ’s edition of the event, set at the Sagamore Resort Friday, May 13 through Sunday, May 15, features television newscaster Benita Zahn as one of the keynote speakers. Some new workshops have been developed, including a Zumba exercise class, and a session on interior decorating and beauty tips. More information will be published in the near future, and tickets are expected to go on sale in January.

McDowell From page 1 Couch potatoes who care about longevity should heed her advice — Nov. 28, McDowell is going to be 100 years young.

In an interview Oct. 21, McDowell talked about her century-long life. The key to longevity, she advised, is taking each day as it comes, savoring each experience.

“I’ve enjoyed my life completely,” she said, noting that while she was once a world traveler, she can now find deep satisfaction in playing a challenging game of Scrabble, taking a scenic ride through the Adirondacks, or socializing with relatives and friends.

Another tip? Don’t worry about the future — live for today, she said.

“I don’t know if I’ll make it to my birthday — if I go to sleep tonight and not wake up, that’s okay with me,” she said with a smile. “I just live a day at a time, and I enjoy that particular day.”

McDowell, born in a farmhouse off Rte. 9 in Chester, has spent most of her eventful life in town.

For years. she’s lived in a house in town, bought from a Sears Roebuck catalogue many many years ago. She was born in a farmhouse near the now-extinct hamlet of “Dublin” where Lincoln Logs headquarters now sits.

In the Oct. 21 interview, McDowell recalled the olden days, walking to school — now the Main St. Ice Cream Parlor — before the roads were routinely plowed. She said she particularly enjoyed her geography lessons, noting their great value now as she digests news and current events.

After graduating from Chestertown High in 1928, she attended Oneonta State College, then worked several years as a teacher in Gilbertsville, NY. Later, she married Joseph McDowell, and left her teaching career to raise her children — Joseph and Katherine —noting that schools back then fired female teachers simply for being married.

McDowell taught in Brant Lake and

Chestertown. At one time, the couple lived in Lake Placid and Elizabethtown, she said. They moved back to Chestertown in 1956.

After raising children, Ruth McDowell continued her teaching career, primarily at Warrensburg Elementary School as a third-grade teacher. She retired in 1973.

Afterwards, the McDowells discovered world travel — not by cruise ship as was the norm, but on freighters.

It was not only less expensive, but the freighter trips allowed the 12 or so passengers on the vessels to meet people of other cultures as they actually live.

On these many freighter trips, the two stayed weeks in various places across the globe, including Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, Hawaii and Japan. These freighter excursions were as lengthy as 10 weeks.

Whether it was visiting a banana plantation in Guatemala, or a decorative tin painting factory in Okinawa, she saw it all, she said.

“We met people in their real surroundings,” she said. “We visited all the places I saw in the geography books.”

Her husband, Joseph, who was four years older than Ruth, died in 1887.

Since then, she’s been living independently as head-of-household, enjoying Scrabble games, trips to Glen Falls on the weekly Senior bus, crossword puzzles, lots of reading, and, of course baseball.

And there’s also watching the various birds out her living room window as they feast on birdseed which she sets out for them each day.

She said she’s enjoyed every minute.

“I have so many good memories,” she said. “And here I am — Well, I sure don’t feel 100 — but I really don’t know how I’m supposed to be feeling,” she added. “I haven’t finished yet — I’ve got a lot to smile about.”

Her tips for satisfaction in life?

“My advice is to be kind, that’s enough,” she said. “Don’t talk about people, and don’t be mean.”

ideas and approaches in town government, which are needed — much like she has in reviving the town Cemetery Committee with its innovative flamingo fundraiser, the rejuvenation and clean up of the town plots, and the monument restoration workshop she engineered.

“Thurman needs someone that can put energy and commitment into the supervisor ’s job and really do the homework that’s involved,” she said Tuesday.

Both agree that town finances need to be buttoned down, since an audit more than a year ago showed the town had more than $800,000 in funds that town officials weren’t aware of.

Evie noted Tuesday that a town capital plan needs to be developed, in accordance with state law.

Birdsall said he wants to help figure out what to do with the Harris House and developing a new town garage, both of which Wood also acknowledges.

Many have cited her strong work ethic, noting she has attended all town board meetings for some time, and virtually every county board meeting since July to familiarize herself with the issues.

Birdsall has said he’s been a little irritated by Wood’s campaign literature, however, that has cited her energy in approaching town issues, as if it implies he might be lacking some at his age.

“I have the energy and experience — I’ve been in the trenches in the assessor ’s office — I’m just moving over to a different trench.”

But while avoiding the age question directly, Wood said that she’d bring fresh, new

Former DEC commissioner Pete Grannis said just days before he was fired by Gov. David A. Paterson the road openings were meant to coincide with the opening of big-game hunting season.

“We are grateful for the help provided by local governments and other partners with the repair work and needed maintenance that enabled DEC to open these roads in time to accommodate hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts,” Grannis said.

Birdsall has been quoted in the media as suggesting the town should consider exiting its contract with the local volunteer squad, and sign a contract with the Warrensburg squad. Thurman Emergency Medical Services lost its Advanced Life Support certification earlier this year, and Warrensburg is fully-certified.

Meanwhile, Wood has campaigned that the town should stick with its existing local, independent squad.

“I’d like to see us continue with the squad in Thurman,” she said. “We have a lot of people dedicated to providing medical services, and I’d hate to see us lose it.”

Birdsall, however, said Tuesday that after hearing a new presentation by a squad representative at an Oct. 19 town meeting, his views have shifted.

“I’d like to accomplish it locally — keep local people

For Gay Pond Road, the South Warren Snowmobile Club covered the cost of several new culverts to replace ones that had collapsed. The highway departments from Hamilton County and the towns of Indian Lake and Inlet replaced culverts, filled holes and graded Indian Lake Road and Otter Brook Road.

Horicon Supervisor Ralph Bentley and Warrensburg Supervisor Kevin Geraghty said they were pleased the areas were reopened, as the access to stateowned lands were an important element in both tourism and providing recreation for local residents. Both added although they volunteered their respective town employees to help out, it was really the state’s responsibility to maintain lands they own in the Adirondacks.

Hitchcock has years of experience as an office manager. Knoll is a computer systems administrator for Gore Mountain Ski Center.

River Plain roads last spring, local governments initiated a lobbying effort to reopen the primary access points to the popular hunting destination.

Hamilton County Board of Supervisors chairman Bill Farber also welcomed the reopening.

“Big game hunting brings muchneeded economic activity to Hamilton County during the fall,” he said. “We appreciate DEC’s willingness to work with us to reopen the roads in the Moose River Plains.”

Grannis was fired Oct. 22 by Paterson’s top aide, Larry Schwartz, after Grannis refused to voluntarily resign a day earlier over a leaked memo.

The memo had said the Governor ’s staff cut plans would seriously hamper the agency’s operations and delay the DEC’s ongoing projects in cleaning up polluted sites. Grannis was appointed commissioner in 2007.

Plans brewing to revive the Warren County Fair WARRENSBURG — Many area residents remember when the annual Warren County Fair hosted carnival rides, a midway, professional live entertainment, pony pulls, and other activities and events that attracted attendees from a wide region. Such a lineup, activities were not only enjoyed by residents and tourists alike, they also spurred vital income to local businesses.

Those who would like to see the county fair return to the grandeur of yesteryear are urged to attend a general interest meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, to examine the formation of a Warren County Fair Association. The meeting is to be held at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center at 377 Schroon River Road in Warrensburg.

The fair has changed dramatically over time due to insurance restrictions and funding cuts which has hindered the fair sponsor, Cornell Cooperative Extension, from providing carnival rides, a

midway, professional entertainers, or attractions.

However, with the formation of a Fair Association, both general liability insurance coverage and funding to bankroll this event could be lined up. An association spearheading the fair would make it possible for the return of a more traditional fair format.

CCE’s Board of Directors has endorsed the concept of forming a local Fair Association to take over development, promotion, insurance, and funding of the Warren County Fair. Cooperative Extension of Warren County will continue to manage and operate the 4-H youth component of the fair and be able to concentrate on the support and achievements of local youth, the officials said.

Shenendehowa 3, Lake George 0 LAKE GEORGE — In one of those non-league games purposefully scheduled against a far-larger school to toughen up their skills, Lake George lost to powerhouse Shenendehowa Oct. 20, 17-25, 11-25, and 16-25. Warrior Amanda Chambers led her team with four service points, one ace, one kill, four blocks, three assists and four digs; teammate Kelly Flaherty contributed with two points, two kills, six blocks and one dig and Kaylie Potter recorded three kills.

Girls Soccer Lake George 3, Whitehall 0 LAKE GEORGE — Lake George’s offense dominated in an Adirondack League Girls Soccer matchup against Whitehall Oct. 20, ending in a 3-0 win for the Warriors.

They kept the Railroaders goalie busy, as the Warriors outshot their opponents 33-2 with balanced play, evidenced by three players scoring goals: Emily DeWaard, Michelle Valenti and Torrie Smith. Whitehall goalie Katie Paddock made 28 saves for the Railroaders.

Bolton 6, Schroon Lake 1 SCHROON LAKE — Bolton Soccer forward Olivia Seamans led the hot-shooting Eagles with four goals for their commanding victory Oct. 19 over Schroon Lake. Teammates Emma Cady and Marissa Parrotta chipped in with the balance of the goals.

Rebecca Armstrong of Schroon Lake shot her squad’s goal, and goaltender Lindsay Reynolds tallied six saves. With the win, Bolton improved to 7-4 in the league.

Troy 2, Lake George 1 LAKE GEORGE — With only 30 seconds remaining, Troy picked up a winning goal to in a non-league matchup. Emily DeWaard scored the goal for Lake George.

Troy, a far-larger school, outshot Lake George 17-7, but Warrior goalie Kay-Kay Goutos turned back many of the shots as she tallied 10 saves.

Boys Soccer Fort Ann 2, Lake George 0 FORT ANN — The seemingly impenetrable defense of the Fort Ann Soccer team shut down Lake George Oct. 22 to win the Adirondack League title in a showdown at Golden Goal Oct. 22.

The undefeated Cardinals (15-0-1) have allowed only three goals against them the entire year.

This is Fort Ann’s second consecutive League championship, after defeating the storied Lake George team. Tuesday, Lake George was seeded second in Section II Class C and they’ll host Berne-Knox at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Bolton 3, Corinth 0 FORT ANN — Bolton outshot Corinth 15-5 and scored two goals early on in a solid 3-0 victory Oct. 22.

Sean Donohue, Kelly Donohue and Mitchell Jordon each scored one goal. Teammates while Dustin French, Kyle Vilmar, and Billy Smith contributed assists. Eagle Goalie Alex Maxam made three saves. With the win, Bolton’s record improved to 8-6-2.

Lake George captures League title by defeating rival Argyle Lake George 3, Argyle 0 ARGYLE — The legendary Warriors extended their unmatched streak of Adirondack League championships Tuesday by defeating top rival Argyle 3-0.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Warriors have won the Adirondack League title. This year ’s win was achieved despite graduating a lineup of powerful players last year.

Tuesday, the 2010 team proved they match up with their predecessors, as they unquestionably earned the title.

A determined but relaxed Warrior team employed savvy ball placement, aggressive play and solid teamwork to soundly defeat the Scots 25-13, 25-18 and 25-11.

In the effort, Lake George's Kelly Flaherty tallied seven service points, six kills and four blocks, Chelsea Sipowicz showed her athleticism with six digs and three kills, and Katy Munzenmaier contributed six service points, three kills and one ace. The Warriors finished their regular season play with an 11-1 record.

Lake George 3, Warrensburg 0 LAKE GEORGE — Despite trailing the league in volleyball with a winless 0-13 record, the Burghers put up a valiant fight against the top team in the region Oct. 22 as Lake George defeated Warrensburg 25-10, 25-7 and 25-9.

Leading Warrensburg in the effort was Ashlee Leary with seven digs and three assists and Laken Ovitt with eight digs and four points. For the Warriors, Kelly Flaherty's tallied 14 service points and one kill. Katy Munzenmaier contributed eight points, three kills and five aces, Emily Borgh had three points, two kills and two aces and Courtney Casey recorded nine points, four aces and nine assists, and Amanda Chambers had eight points, five aces and one kill.

Fort Edward 3, Warrensburg 0 WARRENSBURG — Meghan Hendricks of Fort Edward put on an impressive offensive show Oct. 20 in leading her team to a commanding win over Warrensburg Oct. 20 in volleyball. Hendricks tallied 12 points, four aces, two kills and two blocks in their 25-7, 25-17, 25-8 victory.

A duo of Burghers put in a considerable effort in an attempts to contain the offensive onslaught. Ashlee Leary tallied 15 digs and seven points, and Autumn Smith contributed six digs, four points and one block.

Salem 6 Warrensburg 3 FORT ANN — Warrensburg ended their 2010 soccer season Oct. 22 as both they and their opponents put on an offensive show in a 6-3 loss against Salem at Golden Goal.

For Warrensburg, Sean Young, Tyler McKinney and Ryan Belden all scored. Burgher Goalkeeper Aaron Seeley recorded nine saves.

Hartford 1, Bolton 0 (OT) BOLTON LANDING — Strong defensive play by both Bolton and Hartford pushed a game Oct. 20 into overtime as the Tanagers recorded a 1-0 victory.

Eagles Kyle Vilmar and Todd Markham were key in the defense for Bolton. Hartford improved to 10-2 in the Adirondack League, while Bolton slipped to 6-5.

Hartford 8, Warrensburg 0 WARRENSBURG — League powerhouse Hartford buried Warrensburg 8-0 in a soccer game Oct. 19.

To advance in the Sectionals, however, the Burghers have their work cut out for them as they’ll be facing top-seeded Greenwich in the semifinals at 3 p.m. Friday.

North Warren 5, Lake George 2 CHESTERTOWN — No less than five North Warren players scored as the second-seeded Cougars soundly defeated Lake George Tuesday in a Section II quarterfinal matchup.

Lindsay Schlaeg and Amanda Millington each tallied a goal and an assist for the Cougars in the victory, and teammates Annie Bennett and Dakota Wood contributed one goal each.

Scoring the goals for Lake George, which put up a good fight for their final 2010 game, were Jenna Bechard and Sarah Phillips. The never-say-die Warriors, although winless this season, nearly matched the storied Cougars on shots-on-goal with 5 shots to North Warren’s 7.

The Cougars host Salem at 3 p.m. Friday in a semifinal Sectional matchup.

North Warren 3 Johnsburg 2 JOHNSBURG — North Warren captured half of the Adirondack League championship Oct. 22 by defeating the talented Johnsburg squad 3-2. (See accompanying feature article.)

This game ended up as the key factor in the Cougars winning the 2010 Adirondack League co-championship alongside Corinth (see accompanying article).

Cougar Kiera Warner set the tone of the game when she scored on a shot less than a minute and a half into the game.

The Cougars poured on the offense in the victory, outshooting Corinth 21-1.

Just weeks ago, Corinth was unbeaten in the league and North Warren was way behind, but the Cougars’ late season campaign has been unparalleled.

But the players weren’t discouraged with the lowly ranking — instead, they were determined to forge ahead, 2010’s top Cougar scorer Kiera Warner, a Junior, recalled Monday.

“When we found out we were ranked last, we knew we had to give it our ‘all,’ and we wanted to show that we had what it takes to get to the top,” Kiera said. “The whole season, we knew we could do it, and we worked hard for it and pulled it together.”

When the moment of winning the co-championship arrived after a stroke-off following two overtimes, the joy of overcoming the seemingly insurmountable odds sparked the sobs.

“It was just amazing,” Kiera said of Friday’s brutal battle that ended up in a sweet victory.

Lynn Lewis praised her players for their work ethic and determination in ignoring their lowly ranking and working hard to make their dreams come true.

For North Warren, competing in the Adirondack League has been difficult — because of its small enrollment, other teams have an advantage of a deeper talent pool.

The 2010 team, however, showed all area sports observers that a small school can achieve a lot despite its size, Lewis said. She added that when the 2010 team was ranked last, she told the team they had nothing at all to lose.

“I am so excited — we’ve been working towards this for years, and in the past we came up short, but this group played with a lot of teamwork and skill — and they pulled it off,” she said. “Ranking them last in the league was the fuel the girls needed.”

While in recent years, the Cougars have had a lot of trouble scoring, this year Lewis concentrated teaching followthrough.

Also, she’s focused on getting the players to take one touch on the ball then passing, as dribbling down the field last year resulted in a lot of turnovers. In addition, she’s taught the players to cut to the open space and receive passes, along with new techniques of reading the opponents’ defense, she said.

It also helped that the Cougars were pitted against some In In powerhouses in non-League games. Such matchups meant Memory Memory losses, but the girls gained valuable experience in such Of Of tough play.
