WARRENSBURG — Monday morning, Morgan Harris sat cross-legged atop her sedan parked on Stewart Farrar Avenue, gazing across the street at lot that until recent years hosted the 1850s residence of one of the town’s most influential citizens in its formative years.

Now, bulldozers ripped up earth on the lot, and chain saws buzzed as workers felled a few trees at the back of the plot. Excavation was just beginning to clear the site to prepare it for a proposed new Stewart’s convenience store, to be located across Stewart Farrar from the historic First Presbyterian Church, where Morgan’s mother Lucy is pastor.

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — Tucked away behind Warrensburg’s firehouse is a modest clapboard building, which many have passed by for years without taking notice.

As of this Sunday, it will have housed Warrensburg’s Faith Baptist Church for its entire existence of 40 years.

For four decades now, Faith Baptist Church of Warrensburg has been host to hundreds of adults singing praises and taking Bible courses, children learning spiri-

tual concepts, couples taking marriage vows, students studying lessons and a wide array of church functions.

And at the helm of the church over the time span of Faith Baptist’s history, has been one pastor, Lee B. Call, the church’s founder. While at most congregations, pastors move on or are reassigned after a number of years, Call has kept on shepherding his church.

On a recent morning, Call said he felt he was called to serve a long tenure in Warrensburg.

“God has been good to us,” he said. “There have been a long of different things we’ve been able to do.

He said that the church has pursued many functions and ways of reaching out to people over the years, but the

CHESTERTOWN — The North Warren Chamber of Commerce revealed — in announcing 2010 award recipients — they have expanded their annual recognition program to include not only their VIP of the Year, but a deserving business enterprise as well.

Barbara Blum of Brant Lake has been named North Warren’s Very Important Person of the Year.

This honor is given in recognition of outstanding public service contributed to the community, Chamber officials said.

Because Blum was instrumental in bringing educational and creative children’s and adult programs to the Horicon Public Library, she has helped make the library a social center for the community, chamber president Barbara Thomas said. Hundreds of children have benefited by learning about the life-cycle of the Monarch butterfly, how to make stepping stones, pumpkin painting, and much more in an ongoing series of programs Blum administers,

Thomas said.

Blum also helped organize the Great Brant Lake Duck Race and other community events, including an adult art class on how to create Adirondack Pack Baskets. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Horicon Historical Society and is a member of the Horicon Ladies Auxiliary. Blum will be honored with a dinner banquet and awards ceremony set for 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 11, at Jimbo’s Club at the Point, Brant Lake. The banquet cost is $30. In addition, Stone Bridge & Caves park has been named North Warren’s Small Business of the Year in a debut award for the North Warren Chamber.

This award recognizes a business that has flourished and made significant contributions to the community over the past year.

Thomas noted Stone Bridge & Caves was chosen for the award because of their continuing addition of attractions at the park and their new programs, as

well as providing summer employment opportunities for many area residents.

Stone Bridge & Caves has been a well-known tourist destination for decades, Thomas noted. Owned and operated for more than 200 years by the Beckler family, recent additions to the park include adventure tours, gemstone mining, Frisbee golf, and a DinoDig attraction and wall climbing. In addition, picnic areas can accommodate groups of all sizes. Among the latest enhancements to the park are miles of groomed snowshoe trails, which makes Stone Bridge & Caves a year-round attraction.

“Greg Beckler and his family members are always coming up with fresh ideas,” Thomas said.

A weekend of free admission for area residents during a spring weekend each year encourages residents of Warren, Hamilton and Essex counties to enjoy a day exploring and learning about the geology and history of the park, Thomas added.

During the 2010 campaign, Gibson has attended a rally at 1,000 Acres Ranch in Stony Creek where 200 people turned out, and he shared his views with those participating in the Hudson River White Water Derby in Riverside.

Students add color, cheer to Health Center CHESTERTOWN — About 25 people gathered at the Chester-Horicon Health Center recently to celebrate the completion of two decorative murals painted by five students of North Warren High School. The murals, in the health center’s pediatric exam rooms, took about six months to complete.

“One of our pediatricians, Dr. Poonthota, wanted to make our health center more childfriendly,” Chester Health Center manager Susan Gill said.

Gill had initially contacted North Warren High’s art teacher Polly Tower, who agreed to oversee the project.

To get the ball rolling, the Chester-Horicon Health Center Guild donated $500 for painting supplies.

Creating the scenes were A. J. Brown, Briana Daley, Virginia Graves, Caitlyn Kenney, and Nicole Parker.

Working after school and on weekends, the five students created two brightly colored scenes, one a picture of children playing with dogs in a park, and another filled with figures and a list of things for

Scouts involved in flag retirement ceremony Warrensburg museum has new offerings Due to increasing popularity, the Warrensburg Museum of local history is continuing with its summer hours through the end of the year, museum officials said.

Starting Thursday, Nov. 4, the museum will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month for an ongoing series of programs. This month, visitors are invited to bring in memorabilia from the bygone local stock car races to be shown in a February exhibit.

On Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11, the museum will inaugurate its new Veterans Appreciation Room, featuring uniforms and artifacts representing Warrensburg residents military service in conflicts since the Civil War. Hours for this reception will be announced soon.

Currently, the museum is showing a sampling of recent acquisitions, an exhibit which will run through Nov. 21. Beginning Thanksgiving weekend, the museum will be dressed for the holidays. Also featured during the holiday period will be an exhibit of vintage toy trains and accessories. The museum is open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. and admission is free. Annual series of Graveyard walks expanded The characters expected to be featured this year in an expanded series of history-related events at the cemetery and at Grace’s Restaurant range from the obscure to the notorious. Spanning three centuries, all had an impact on Warrensburg’s residents and future.

The characters, brought to life by local citizens, will be appearing at two graveyard walks at the Warrensburgh Cemetery and a dinner sponsored by the Warrensburgh Historical Society at Graces Restaurant at the society’s annual “Dinner with the Dead.”

An afternoon graveyard walk is also scheduled for all fourth graders at Warrensburg Central School.

The first of the two public graveyard walks, to be conducted at the Warrensburg Cemetery, is slated for 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22. The event includes a gathering for dessert at Cornerstone Victorian Bed & Breakfast. The charge for the event is $12 per person.

The second graveyard walk is to be held Friday, Oct. 29, at the cemetery, with dessert to follow at Bill and Rosemary Maher ’s residence at 2 Cloverleaf Dr. This latter event is $6 per person. Tickets for either walk are available from Marilyn Hayes at 623-3436. These events are popular and space is limited, Historical Society members have observed.

A fundraiser pancake breakfast to benefit Warrensburg High School’s PRIDE is to be held Sunday, Oct. 17, at the Warrensburg Masonic Temple.

With servings from 8 a.m. until noon, the meal features pancakes, sausage, eggs, toast, juice and coffee. The price is $6 for adults and teens, and $3 for children 12 and younger.

Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at the high school’s Room 111. All proceeds will benefit PRIDE Program, which is an incentive program for students to promote positive behavior.

Two women of great importance to Warrensburg’s future are expected to visit. Melissa Warren, the widow of Warrensburg’s alleged namesake, was instrumental in the town’s official formation in 1813. At the other end of the time span is Jennie Cameron, long-time librarian at Richards Library who introduced the phonograph and, later, the computer to library patrons.

Lawyer Thomas Cunningham, of the 19th century, may have had his hands full with the eccentricities and chicanery of Orlando Bryant, known as the “Hermit of Harrington Hill,” who sometimes mistook his neighbor ’s chickens for his own. Cunningham rose above such mundane squabbles to become one of Warrensburg’s landed gentry and two-term town supervisor.

Joseph Aiken, a hard-working family man, may enjoy long-term fame, thanks to his meticulous diary written during his World War I service in Italy and France. InBrief Golf tourney a resounding success WARRENSBURG — North Country Ministry experienced a very successful Golf Tournament Sept. 16 at Cronin's Golf Course, agency representatives said this week. Conservatives back Birdsall for supervisor WARRENSBURG — The Warren County Conservative Committee announced recently they have nominated Thomas Birdsall for Thurman Town Supervisor, and his name will appear on the Conservative Party line on the November ballot. Birdsall, a Republican, is running in the upcoming election alongside Evelyn Russell, who declared six weeks or so ago. Both are seeking to complete the unfinished term of Lawrence Pitkin who resigned effective July 31, 2010.

Birdsall, a small business owner for over 40 years, serves as an elected Assessor for the Town of Thurman and has served as Chairman of the town’s Board of Assessment Review.

In a prepared statement, County Conservative Party chairwoman Carol Birkholz said Monday that Birdsall’s positions fit in with Conservative principles, he has a full understanding of business practices and has assured party leaders that he will not have a problem voting down unnecessary county government spending.

•100 Years Ago – October, 1910• Robbed by young acquaintances Oscar Duell, a farmer living near Bolton Landing, was held up, assaulted and robbed on Elm St. in Glens Falls. A silver watch and eight dollars in money was taken from him.

Shortly preceding the assault Duell, in company with two young city sports, Medos Benway and Frank Trombley, left Arnold’s Saloon on Exchange St. at which place the two sporty young men were overheard “joshing” the farmer about buying pigs, etc.

The trio separated on Exchange St. and Duell was proceeding to his lodging house when he was held up on Elm St. by two young men whose voices he said resembled the two men he had been talking with. They sprang on him and dropped him to the sidewalk where they robbed him. Duell was injured about the head.

Police later arrested Benway and Trombley but a search failed to bring forth the watch and the money.

Trombley was released on $1,000 bail. Benway, who was recently released from the Elmira reformatory, was taken to the county jail. Both men will await the Grand Jury.

Hungry thief caught by constable A Polander giving his name as John Weber of New York City, broke into William Langworthy’s house about a mile above Warrensburgh Oct. 12, 1910 during Mr. Langworthy’s absence and stole from a valise a pair of shoes, a revolver, jackknife, razor, pair of gloves and a hair brush. Some of the neighbors saw the man leaving the house and telephoned to Constable W.H. Ovitt. Lewis Everts picked the man up on the road and steered him into Constable Ovitt’s hands.

Weber was arrested and taken before Justice Hodgson. The missing articles were found in a suitcase he carried along with other articles he had collected along the way in the same manner. The man said he had broken into the house to find something to eat after a fast of 24 hours and took what he could find. With a charge of burglary in the third degree

he will wait in the county jail for the action of the Grand Jury.

(Note: this old house once stood just north from what is now the town industrial park. I was impressed with the way they built the horse stable on the back of the kitchen wall where the big old wood burning iron stove stood in order to keep the horse warm in the winter time. There was an open attic-type room on the second floor where several beds stood dormitory style.)

City folk continue to infiltrate Lake George Noble Whitcomb’s new house in Bolton Landing is fast nearing completion. Several new cottages will be built in Bolton this winter for use next summer. The natives are being driven to the hills by the constantly increasing number of city people who wish permanent summer homes here on the lake.

Frosts are holding off remarkably well so far this autumn.

John Pratt has bought a cow from Mr. Roberts in West Bolton.

Mrs. Stewart Fuller has sold her horse to Dexter Wright.

The last trip of the season for The Sagamore on Lake George took place Oct. 1, 1910. The Mohican carries the mail and will make regular trips until November and perhaps until December if the weather stays good.

Angry bull tramples farmer James Shields, 71, a farmer of Hartford, owes his life to his shepherd dog which saved him from being gored to death by a two-year-old bull. He sustained a fracture of his arm and was badly bruised about the back and shoulders where he was struck by the bull’s horns. He was thrown to the ground in his pasture and his dog went at the bull and worried the animal until the man’s son rescued him.

News around Warrensburgh Apples were nearly a total failure this year and much of the crop has been made into cider. The potato crop turned out good and they make fine eating.

The work of painting the buildings of the County Home, which has been going on for several weeks has been finished.

Delbert Brown is building a new house on Warren Heights, the new street on the hill back of the Warren House which was opened a few years ago. (Note…Warren Heights behind the Warren House is today Green Terrace behind Stewart’s Convenience Store.)

Freeman Cilley of West Bolton has purchased a new wagon in Warrensburgh from E.S. Crandall.

Mrs. N.J. Kenyon and Mrs. Edward Hadden have returned home from a four week’s visit with friends in the western part of the state and Canada.

Patrick Haley was struck in the eye by a stick while assisting in repairs at the Woolen Mill Dam on the Schroon River. A slit was cut in his eyelid making a painful wound.

George Bunker is ill with Typhoid Fever at the home of his aunt, Mrs. Harlon Harrington. He returned home recently from Utica where he has been sojourning for several months.

Nate Kenyon, whom everybody likes, is back on F.J. Cameron’s delivery wagon after a short vacation.

News roundabout Little Allen Baldwin of Stony Creek, who drank some iodine through mistake or mischief, is coming out all right as he acts pretty normal again. Elsewhere in Stony Creek, Dr. Aldrich returned home from Jud Fuller ’s camp with the hind quarter of a nice deer as his share of the trophy secured in a few days’ hunting.

Timothy Healy of Utica, a commercial traveler, was accidentally killed by a guide near Raquette Lake who mistook Healy for a deer.

During the terrific thunder storm on Sept. 27, 1910, three cows on the farm of Eugene Persons were instantly killed by a stroke of lightning. The cows were lying close together under a shed at the farm in Horicon.

Gibson’s the right choice

Examine the fire budget!

To the editor: Taxpayers of the Chestertown Fire District should be aware that a hearing on the proposed $422,481 fire budget for 2011 will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Chestertown firehouse, 5885 State Rte. 8 in Chestertown.

This hearing is open to the public and will be local citizens’ only opportunity to publicly voice their opinion on the fire budget. In 2010 fire district taxes quietly escalated 18.6 percent, and no one questioned it.

This tax increase was due a $93,000 first-year appropriation for the adoption of a questionably legal retirement program for the volunteer firefighters all of which was done rather secretively. The neighboring Horicon Volunteer Fire Company has a similar retirement program for $27,000 annually.

Copies of the proposed fire budget are available at the office of the Chester Town Clerk at the town Municipal Center, 6307 State Rte. 9, Chestertown.

It is in area citizens’ best interest to attend the Oct. 19 hearing to assure accountability for efficient fire protection.

County Clerk’s office dedicated to providing public information To the editor: On Sept. 30, the Post-Star addressed the Warren County Board of Supervisors’ County Clerk committee regarding the policy on camera use in the public records room of the County Clerk’s office. Following discussion, the committee moved to forward the issue to the County Attorney for legal opinion and recommendation.

As the Recording and Filing Officer for the county, the Clerk is charged with the responsibility to preserve, protect and provide the public record. This can be a challenge, encompassing documents that date back to 1813 and handling 186,000 new pages annually. Without controls, documents can be placed at risk.

In as much as the Post-Star has opted to editorialize on this issue prior to the County Attorney’s response, the following is for the benefit of all county residents and it illustrates efforts by the Clerk’s Office to provide the public records in the most cost-effective, efficient, and timely manner without compromising document or file integrity.

The Clerk’s Office provides two copiers with fees payable by coin and card; six computer terminals with full search and print capabilities; monthly credit billing for all copy accounts 1.5 million pages of land records computerized since 2005 facilitating access and reproduction; some Internetbased access to computerized records with 58,000 pages viewed or printed to date; and a digital camera policy, in our Archives, to reproduce historic papers in a supervised environment.

Our current policy is long-standing and takes into consideration the reasonable and practical use of county resources — both personnel and equipment. In July 2010, an email survey conducted by my office found 19 of 20 county clerks not permitting the use of digital cameras in their public records room.

The issue presented by the daily newspaper does not appear to be a violation of the public’s Right to Know laws.

The court document the Post-Star reporter requested — a new court filing — was available in a timely manner. I do welcome this examination, however. I trust that the end result will be what is best for county office management, what is best for the public — today and for generations to come, and most importantly, what is best for the public record.

To the editor: The choice between candidates for the 20th congressional district is like night and day when looking at the issues and the men.

The issues: Scott Murphy said he opposed the health care bill, then changed his vote and voted for it. Chris Gibson is for repealing and replacing this bill. Murphy voted for The “Employee Free Choice Act,” better known as Card Check, which would force union members into a public vote. Gibson is for preserving the democratic right to a private vote.

Murphy has voted for the stimulus act. Gibson is for cutting federal spending. Murphy is for government spending to create public sector jobs. Gibson is for getting the government off small businesses’ backs to create private sector jobs. Murphy is for the “Cap and Trade” emissions bill. Gibson is for developing economically sound alternative energy sources.

Murphy votes with Nancy Pelosi nearly 90 percent of the time and portrays himself as a fiscal hawk. Gibson is a fiscally conservative combat veteran who believes in lower taxes and elimination of onerous regulations that hurt small business.

The men: Murphy grew up in Missouri. Gibson grew up in the New York’s 20th District.

While at Harvard, Murphy worked to ban ROTC from campuses. Gibson attended Siena College because of ROTC — and then he attended Cornell University so he could teach at West Point. Murphy made millions of dollars in business.

Gibson spent 24 years serving his country including four combat tours in Iraq. Murphy says he is a small business owner. Gibson was a full Colonel in the US Army managing thousands of men and women and multi-million dollar budgets in hostile environments to help rebuild countries.

Murphy is fighting for his job. Gibson is fighting for his country.

I hope everyone who votes in this upcoming election does their home work on the issues and these candidates. When conducting appropriate research, the differences between the candidates are very clear — like night and day.

Property rights conference to review encroaching restrictions

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — A conference examining land use restrictions and how property owners’ rights are threatened is to be held in Lake George next weekend.

The convention, which annually draws people from across the nation, is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 23, at Holiday Inn Resort of Lake George — and the public is invited.

Entitled “Removal & Resistance,” this 14th annual conference of the Property Rights Foundation of America examines a struggle of citizens in the Adirondacks and elsewhere across the nation in preserving their property rights, foundation founder Carol LaGrasse of

Stony Creek said.

“Our conference will document how rural and urban citizens are fighting enviropreservationists and big government to retain their homes, businesses, communities and land rights,” she said. “We’ll be informing people how eminent domain, state and federal agencies and even local zoning are attacking traditional communities and their heritage and driving ordinary people out.”

The day-long conference will feature grassroots Adirondack leaders and a number of experts on regional issues, LaGrasse said.

The foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Stony Creek.

The event begins with registration and a breakfast snack at 8 a.m. Annually,

about 100 people attend the conference.

This year ’s theme will include a new angle on government’s tightening control over land use, particularly in suburban and urban areas.

Among the dozen or so speakers will be Roger Pilon, a Constitutional scholar and director of the Cato Institute, explaining how the principles of eminent domain relate to property rights, and John Marwell, an attorney from Westchester county who will be speaking about suburban zoning and building codes, and how ordinary citizens increasingly can’t meet their expensive, ever-changing restrictive mandates.

Tax rate expected to decrease in Lake George Tax levy up, cash reserves to increase LAKE GEORGE — Tax rates are scheduled to decrease in the town of Lake George in 2011 despite an increase in total spending, according to a town budget now under consideration by the town board.

Officials endorsed a tentative 2011 budget at a town board meeting held last week.

The budget calls for spending $2,343,038 on general government appropriations townwide, an increase of about $143,038 from 2010 — offset by $681,300 in revenue, leaving $1,711,738 to be raised by taxes townwide.

This tax levy is an increase of $176,738 or 11.5 percent over 2010.

Tax rates, however are expected to go down by 2 cents per thousand from 2010, to $2.25 per thousand — a decrease of eight-tenths of one percent. Last year, the town experienced a 14.6 percent increase in taxes levied.

Town supervisor Frank McCoy said the decrease in tax rate, despite the increase in total tax levy, was in part due to prevailing new construction raising the town’s total assessed valuation. He said the crafting the budget was a difficult process due to falling revenues from state reimbursements and some hiked costs for mandatory expenditures.

The budget also calls for $567,651 to be spent on general government appropriations outside Lake George village, offset by the same amount in revenue. This is a decrease of $3,349 from 2010.

The budget calls for spending $1,377,000 on highway appropriations outside the village, an increase of $91,400 over 20010, or a hike of 7 percent over 2009. Last year, these highway appropriations had increased tenfold over 2009.

This year ’s highway appropriations outside the village, however, will be offset by an estimated $1,377,000 in revenues, leaving a zero sum to be raised by taxes, rather than the $186,100 called for last year.

McCoy said the reason for the reduction in levy was boosted revenues, including discontinuing the practice of having the county hold back sales tax revenues to pay property owners’ county taxes. In 2010, the town of Lake George left about $500,000 on deposit with the county for such a purpose.

McCoy warned, however, that going forward, the town will likely be garnering a lower proportion of the county’s total sales tax revenue, due to the accelerated growth of development in Queensbury, which increases their share of local sales tax revenue, a distribution which is based on assessed valuation.

The tax rate for highway expenses outside the village is expected to be zero cents per thousand for 2011, rather than 31 cents charged in 2010.

Tuesday, McCoy cited pressures on the budget, including increases in employee retirement costs, and

restoring a proportion of town cash surpluses to a safe level. He said the budget calls for increasing town cash reserves by at least $200,000.

“We’re seeking to boost the financial stability and resources of the town, while capping taxes,” McCoy said.

One of the more expensive items new to the budget this year is the planned closure of the town construction and demolition landfill, which is expected to cost about $100,000.

The pending $210,000 payoff for pulling out of the West Brook environmental park project is not going to cut taxes, but it will reduce town debt. McCoy said the money will go directly to pay off borrowings for the project.

This tentative town budget is subject to further review Monday evening at a town board meeting.

Queens County, who will be talking about how eminent domain under cloaked justifications have allowed an unwelcome takeover of private property in the county for industrial uses.

Also, Michael Cristofaro, a plaintiff in a propertyrights lawsuit, will be speaking on how controversial condemnation of properties in New London, Conn. led to a whole urban neighborhood being wiped out, and a planned industrial development for which the forced taking was conducted, never occurred as planned.

Jim McCulley of Lake Placid will be telling his story of how he was arrested for driving his pickup truck on an old mountain road, and how he won a court battle waged all the way to the state Supreme Court to re-

store public access.

Ted Galusha of Warrensburg is slated to describe his court fight to open up forest and waterway access to the disabled achieved great strides in theory, but the Department of Environmental Conservation has now closed down many of the areas to all users, citing lack of ability to manage them.

Peter LaGrasse of Stony Creek is likely to offer his observations on how the state has been seeking to back off their responsibility to pay taxes on their forest lands to local municipalities and its negative effect on rural residents.

William Perry Pendley from the Mountain States Legal Foundation in Colorado will be speaking about how small enterprises owning historic oil wells on

The Roaches pose beside a 1955 Chevrolet that was on the Erlowest grounds for the event, which honored the Class of 1960 on their 50th anniversary. The event featured entertainment by vocalist Laura Roth and music by Paul Epstein of Mark Brenneisen’s Total Entertainment. More than 125 alumni attended the banquet, many of them dressed in vintage clothing including 1950s-era prom gowns and tuxedos. Those attending represented LGHS classes as far back as 1937.

Manitoba or Bust!

W

hen I tell people I am heading to Manitoba for a guided bow hunt the response I normally get isn’t “Where in Manitoba?” it’s more like “Where is Manitoba?”

“I don’t really know,” is my patent response — and that’s not all that far from the truth.

I know it is many, many miles away — a fact that will surely be driven home as my hunting chum, Mike Fenoff, and I take to the highway this week for the 1,900-mile ride.

My concern isn’t so much the 1,900-mile ride, but more the 19,000-mile ride back .... or so it will most certainly seem.

But alas, life’s not about the destination, it’s about the ride — as Peter Fonda so aptly put it in the 1969 flick “Easy Rider.”

Fonda is one cool cat — and those are some super words to live by. Which is totally why I opted to drive 30-plus hours over the five-hour flight.

Okay, not really. Are you nuts? You actually think I’d chose 30-plus hours of staring at pavement and brake lights until my eyes bleed over being waited on by stewardesses with arms full of those tiny little liquor bottles?

Nope. It’s more because I couldn’t pony up the $700 plane fare ... plus baggage fee, pillow and blanket fee, meal and drink fee and God knows what else they whack you for these days.

Soooo, I plan to make the best of it, which is where the whole “enjoy the ride” philosophy comes into play. Actually, it is a mindset I have long subscribed to.

Perhaps it has something to do with the deep psychological scars that linger from my childhood, left by my dad’s refusing to stop the car for a single bathroom break during the entire 22-hour trip we took to Florida each year.

“We’ve still got a quarter-tank of gas, can you hold out another few exits?” he’d bellow, just as the last rest area for 60 miles whizzed by.

I can still picture him standing at the rear of our panelsided station wagon, hair all disheveled, stuffing enough food and drink in the back to last through a Sammy Davis Jr. telethon.

“We’ve got a schedule to keep,” he’d say, slamming the huge swinging door at the tail of the Queen Family Truckster and glaring hard at his oversized wrist watch.

And then, inevitably, would come the million dollar question: “Okay now, does anyone need to use the bathroom?”

I still wet myself a little when I say that sentence aloud.

“Uhmmmmm ... no, not really, dad,” I’d say, staring blankly at the ground with my hands behind my back, grinding the toe of one shoe in the sand.

“Well, try anyway,” he’d holler, glaring so hard at you it all but made peeing impossible anyway. “I don’t want to hear you’ve got to go an hour into this trip.”

An hour? We all knew better. It was next step North Carolina. The man had an iron bladder, I swear.

Anyway, back to the Manitoba story, which was my motivation for this column in the first place.

Honest.

As you read this, I’ll be readying for a seven-day guided bow hunt in Minnedosa, Manitoba, just east of Saskatchewan.

In a province the size of Texas, only 3,400 bow permits are issued every year — that’s resident and non-resident combined. And, the rate of harvest is 40 percent, which is nearly unheard of in the U.S. I also fell in with a great guide who supports and gives discounts to people with physical limitations. The fact that both he and his son are disabled no doubt has everything to do with that fact.

I plan to have a camouflage laptop with me and will be chronicling the hunt from my tree stand as it unfolds.

Again a slight exaggeration, but I will be giving daily reports and taping portions of the hunt which will be posted to my blog at www.denpubs.com.

Going Wild in Westport

L

ast week, on a cold and rainy evening, I traveled to Westport to attend a Keeping Track Wildlife Event at Floral Hall on the Essex County Fairgrounds.

The event, hosted by the Champlain Valley Conservation Partnership, drew a large crowd. In the coolness of the early evening, trackers, wildlife enthusiasts, hunters hikers, paddlers and birders gathered to listen to renowned tracker and wildlife expert Sue Morse.

I was surprised and pleased to note that the group consisted of nearly as many children as adults. I’ve always believed that youngsters make wonderful trackers. They are observant, naturally inquisitive and physically, located a bit closer to the ground than most adults. Additionally, children love the sense of adventure that comes with discovery.

As the crowd filtered in, they encountered a room lined with tables that featured numerous hands-on displays of animal pelts, skulls, feet, track molds, mounts and other natural items.

Each section offered something of interest, from stumps and limbs that bore signs of mice knawing, beaver chews and bear claws to a collection of pelts, track casts, including a full body mount of a wolverine, which curiously looked a small bear, with white stripes.

The displays allowed visitors the opportunity to see, touch and feel the pelts, scat, skulls and tracks cast that had been collected from a wide range of North American birds and animals.

Local wildlife experts, guides and other outdoors men and women manned the displays to help interpret the wares. The kids were enthralled, and the adults became kids again.

Susan Morse, a nationally recognized naturalist and habitat specialist, answered question from the crowd before launching into an entertaining slide show that featuring her incredible wildlife photography.

Ms. Morse jump-started the program by silencing the crowd with a “spot on call” of a red fox. The fox call, amplified by a loudspeaker system, certainly got everyone’s attention and the slide show kept it. Despite the damp, cold evening, few people stirred until the show ended.

“I am simply an observer,” she explained. “The land is the teacher!” However, it was obvious that she knew her business, as slide after slide revealed her intimacy with wildlife. It was also interesting to note that, beyond being a professional tracker, photographer and wildlife interpreter, she is also an avid hunter and recently enjoyed an expedition for caribou in northern Quebec.

With quick wit and an occasional turkey call, Morse kept the audience’s attention especially when she focused on catamounts, panthers and mountain lions. Morse has been involved in numerous studies researching mountain lions in the west. A tangible buzz hit the room as she explained that, “In

The event was sponsored by the Champlain Valley Conservation Partnership (CVCP), with partners that included the Northeast Wilderness Trust, Champlain Area Trails, the Adirondack Council, Champlain National Bank, Dogwood Bread Company, and outdoor guide and writer Elizabeth Lee. CVCP is a program of Champlain Area Trails (www.champlainareatrails.com) that works with others to connect people to nature through a system of hiking and skiing trails that link local communities to protect habitat and scenic vistas, and promote economic vitality.

A major focus of Morse’s work with Keeping Track entails teaching interested citizens about detecting animal uses of habitat near their communities and ways to conserve local wildlife.

Currently, CVCP, in conjunction with Keeping Track, Inc., have plans to develop a network of trained, wildlife observers throughout the Champlain Valley to monitor the long-term stewardship of wildlife habitat. The group intends to host a training session in the near future and interested parties are welcome to apply.

Typically, the training entails a six-day, in the field-training workshop, plus two classroom sessions. Participants are taught a scientifically based data collection methodology in the form of track and sign surveys. During the training, the following issues are addressed: detection and interpretation of tracks and sign of agreed upon focal species for your region, conservation biology as it relates to data collection and resulting land protection, forest ecology and plant indentification.

On a personal note

Over the fence Gripes are pouring in on the many politicians running for the statewide and Congressional posts. They’re dominating the television time and interrupting our viewing. Just think of all the money flying through the tree tops they are wasting on these appearances. After all their bickering we may have to cast some write-in votes!

OCTOBER 2010 How To Choose Antifreeze For Your Vehicle There are so many different varieties of antifreeze on the shelves these days; it’s hard to choose the right one for your car. You might consider really sitting down to educate yourself on what your car needs or taking a trip to a local Utah auto repair store to ask assistance there. Everyone has their favorites, as will you soon enough.

My first question when I became an auto owner was “what is antifreeze?”

While you might get an incredulous look from a Utah auto repair clerk for such a question, the answer is simple. Antifreeze, or engine coolant, is a liquid that runs all around your engine, taking away heat and keeping things nice and cool.

The main ingredients used in antifreeze are known as propylene glycol and ethylene. Both of these chemicals have freezing points that are lower than water letting the coolant move easily in even the coldest weather. With a boiling point that is higher than water, it does the same in the hot summer months.

Antifreeze was once a very simple product. There were minimal choices on the market and they were always green. With the simplified formula came a simplified job of just keeping the engine cool, carrying heat to the radiator and preventing corrosion within the engine.

Standard green formula antifreeze is the type that most vehicles used until extended-life coolants were introduced back in the mid-1990s. This type of coolant contains fast-acting silicate and phosphate corrosion inhibitors that protect cast iron engines, bi-metal engines, copper/brass and aluminum radiators. While this type of antifreeze is primarily for vehicles made pre-1996, it can also be used in virtually any vehicle regardless of year, provided all of the old coolant is completely flushed and replaced with new.

Organic Acid Technology or OAT is a coolant with organic acids and without phosphates or silicates. This coolant is orange in color and has a service life of 150,000 miles or up to five years. The corrosion inhibitors in OAT antifreeze act slower than that of its old school green formula counterpart, but it has a much longer life.

It doesn’t matter what make, model or year your car is if you want to use a Universal formula antifreeze. This OAT-based coolant has corrosion inhibitors with organic acids that give excellent coverage in your engine. Universal formula is almost always a yellow or amber color.

Any decent auto repair store will carry these three types of antifreeze. Make sure the correct kind is your car and you will be adding years to your automobile. If still unsure of what kind to buy, ask a sales clerk for help or check out the owner’s manual for the kind best recommended for the long life of your car.

Local band, eyeing national tour, to perform at Jimbo’s

Variety show features full slate of performers

BOLTON LANDING — After a one-year hiatus, the Bolton Variety Show is back and better than ever, show sponsors have assured area citizens.

They’ve invited all in the region to attend and watch their Bolton friends, business owners, parents, offspring, and former town supervisors sing and dance to the memorable tunes of the Motown and Doo-Wop era.

This year ’s edition of the variety show, entitled “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” is a one-night only performance Saturday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Bolton Central School gymnasium.

Tickets are $7 for adults, and $5 for seniors and students.

The show is considered an important fundraiser for the Bolton Central School Scholarship program.

Snacks offered during the show’s intermission are sponsored by BCS Class of 2012.

Up Yonda Haunted Trail & Barns resurrected The UpYonda Farm environmental education center has revived its tradition of offering a haunted trail and barns event for children prior to Halloween.

The fun, semi-spooky short excursion in the woods at the center ’s facilities will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, and Saturday, Oct. 23.

“All are welcome to bring their entire family and share the excitement of a night of thrills and chills as you venture through our woods where monsters of the night will be waiting,” an Up Yonda employee said.

Also featured this year is the haunted house, Casper ’s NoScare Area and spooky stories by the campfire. Refreshments will be available to those left with an appetite. All are urged to wear their costume. The cost is $8 per person, or $4 for members and Bolton residents.

BRANT LAKE — A local band that’s recently enjoying increasing national notoriety will be featured soon in a concert at Jimbo’s Club. The event is envisioned as a preview of what will likely be a national tour.

The concert by the Steven L. Smith Band, is set for 7 to 10 p.m.

Smith is not only known as a musician, he’s gained notoriety for hand-crafting guitars in his Brant Lake studio. Recently, Smith was featured in a music video for a tune “I Stole the Bible” filmed at the Panther Mountain house, he said.

The Oct. 29 concert, bearing a $10 admission fee, features the opening act of Jennifer Gadway of North Creek, performing her vocals, which she backs up with acoustic guitar.

Freshman at SUNY Pottsdam studying Environmental Science, explained why she was conducting a watchful vigil, gripping a baseball bat as she watched the development of the site, which has not only sparked considerable controversy in town, but prompted a lawsuit from citizens seeking to protect the neighborhood’s historic ambiance and serenity.

“I woke up this morning to the sound of a big tree being cut down, and I am going to sit here to make sure these workers don’t take down any more trees,” Morgan Harris said. “I will sit in front of the remaining two trees if I need to, and if they try to move me, I have my bat.”

Months ago, a group of 15 local citizens filed an Article 78 lawsuit, alleging that the town board didn’t properly conduct a required environmental review for the store and the preceding zoning change. The suit included a request for a preliminary injunction to stop Stewart’s Shops from proceeding with plans to build a store on the historic lot. The citizens’ injunction request was declined recently by state Supreme Court Justice David Krogmann, who also rejected Stewart’s motion to dismiss the citizens’ lawsuit.

In the decision, Krogmann warned that any excavation or construction at the project site would be at Stewart’s peril if the company proceeded with the lawsuit’s outcome still pending.

Paul Gilchrist, President of the Warrensburgh Historical Society and leader of the citizens’ group, said Stewart’s was ignoring the judge’s advice by felling a 100-year-old cherry tree and beginning the excavation on Monday.

“By going ahead while the matter’s still in court, Stewart’s seems to be showing disregard for the legal procedure of the lawsuit,” he said.

Contacted Monday, Tom Lewis of the real estate division of Stewart’s said the construction timetable wasn’t his direct responsibility, and that inquiries should be directed to the firm’s lawyer, Jon Lapper. But Lapper said Tuesday that Stewart’s simply made a tactical decision to move forward with the construction, and he wouldn’t comment on it — but that questions about whether it was in conflict with the judge’s advice should be addressed to Lewis.

The pending citizens’ lawsuit, among its many claims, challenged whether the zoning and environmental review involved segmentation, whether the town board was engaged in “spot zoning,” and whether the board bypassed required criteria on a SEQR review. The judge’s decision on the injunction rejected the claims of segmentation and spot zoning, and a claim that irreparable harm would occur by the development — but Krogmann did cite the po-

tential of irreparable harm from the removal of the trees.

Lapper said the decision on the injunction addressed the pivotal issues of the suit — the segmentation and spot zoning claims.

“I think the town did a thorough job with the SEQR review and the approval of the project,” he said.

Gilchrist, however, said many issues in the suit weren’t addressed in Krogmann's initial decision. Still pending are the citizens’ allegations that the town board fabricated minutes concerning which town entity was authorized to conduct the environmental review and board minutes concerning the scope of the SEQR’s jurisdiction. The citizens also challenged the town’s written assertions on the SEQR review that claim that the development would have no significant impact on groundwater quality or aesthetic resources.

Tuesday, Gilchrist said his group doubts the validity of the neighborhood traffic study Stewart’s commissioned in the planning review process, and that the planning members had fudged their training requirements mandated by state law. The judge’s decision calls for the town to submit minutes and various documents and transcripts within 30 days. Gilchrist said the group was awaiting the judge’s decision.

Meanwhile, Morgan Harris said her concerns over the tree’s fate would be continuing. Lewis said he couldn’t say whether the two trees Harris was ready to defend Monday were scheduled to be cut down.

“I don’t know if the site plan involves leaving trees or bringing them down,” he said.

Harris said she was alarmed the town officials hadn’t thoroughly considered the concerns of the town citizens over the neighborhood character, its history, and the safety of young pedestrians who frequent the local sidewalks.

“I’m upset the town has ignored the voice of the people,” she said. “They don’t know how it will effect this part of town.”

“It’s been a challenge at times, but we have a great group of people here, there’s a oneness of spirit,” Call added.

Call, 69 years old, originally moved here in 1968, after graduating from Gordon College in 1964 and ministering in Baltimore, Md. with Youth for Christ.

In 1970, he launched the church, originally titled Mastering Life’s Challenge, a congregation with an emphasis on youth outreach.

In 1978, Call took several years off from his church to obtain a

He returned in 1981 to resume his pastoral duties. At this time, he established the Warrensburg Christian Academy to provide a spiritually-based alternative to public school. At this time, the congregation was re-named Faith Baptist Church. During these early years, he led an effort to build a second story to the original church building and in 1985, a new church sanctuary to the southeast of the original sanctuary was constructed. During the peak years of the Academy, it had an enrollment of 42. The school lasted until 1997 or so, when falling enrollment meant tuitions weren’t sufficient to support two to four teachers.

Faith Baptist, however, continued its emphasis on youth, with its outreach activities and spiritual education classes. Now, the church offers a Monday night pre-teen program, and a Friday night session for teenagers. Activities centered on youth include not only Sunday school but picnics, skits, youth all-nighters, rock-a-thons, skits, outings, Vacation Bible School, camp sessions, and Christmas programs.

Attendance at the church averages 40 to 50, with the congregation growing to 70 people or so on occasion.

For adults, the church offers Ladies’ and Men’s groups, men’s breakfast sessions, prayer meetings, choir, Bible studies, dinners and family nights, Call said.

“We try to minister to people any way we can help them,” he said, noting the church participates in an active missions program that spans five continents. The church also reaches out locally, providing services for nursing homes.

In addition, Call conducts a radio program at 91.9 FM named Faith at Work. Plus, Call provides personal counseling that’s Christian based.

“I really believe the Bible has so many guiding principles for life — it’s the manual for living in this world,” he said.

Church anniversary activities scheduled Sunday Oct. 17, the church is welcoming all in the region to help celebrate their anniversary. At 9 a.m., a breakfast will be held, followed by a special anniversary service at 9:45 a.m. At 10:45, morning services will be offered. At 2 p.m., the congregation will hold a Church family dinner, which others may attend. At 4 p.m., gospel singer Jay Witham will perform.

Last Monday, Call wandered through his church buildings, recounting the various activities of his congregation.

He paused and gazed past the pews, donated years ago from several other churches.

“This was my vision, this was what I was called to do,” he said.

“It’s been a great experience.”

Olden takes first place in 540-mile bicycle race

“Being from here, and training in this environment was advantageous to me winning,” he said, noting he trained specially for this event for more than a year, often getting up as early as 2:30 a.m. to have enough time for the lengthy practice sessions.

Olden is now qualified — for two years — to compete in the Race Across America event, although he said he is uncertain he’ll be able to invest the time to train for a nine-day race. He said he would have to log 300 miles per day for three to four times a week to prepare for Race Across America, and with a young family that wouldn’t be practical.

He noted his appreciation, however, for their support in the recent ADK 540 race.

“I wouldn’t have been able to have been successful if it wasn’t for the support of my family,” he said.

Olden, employed as sales and marketing coordinator for Lincoln Logs based in Chestertown, said he plans to compete in the 2012 ADK 540 race.

thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN — For the first time in the history of the annual long-distance ADK 540 bicycling race, an area resident has finished as the overall winner.

Bob Olden, 42, of Chestertown, captured first place in the 2011 edition of the ADK 540, held Sept. 17 and 18.

He completed a 136.1 mile loop four times in 38 hours and 16 minutes, starting at 6:50 a.m.

Friday and finishing Saturday evening at 9:06 p.m.

The course, which features a total vertical gain of 31,000 feet, is set in the High Peaks and Lake Champlain Valley.

The race is ranked by 100.peak.com as the 14th hardest race in the world.

Nine bicyclers entered this year ’s four-lap race to compete and attempt to qualify for the Race Across America competition. The ADK 540 also includes one, two, and three lap races.

WHITEHALL — In the 1930s, most of the stores in Whitehall would close down for a football game, and as many as 12,000 fans would jam the gridiron field to watch their beloved team. From 1938 to 1941, the Whitehall football squad, under the helm of legendary coach Ambrose Gilligan, went unbeaten through 27 games. In the 139 season, no team scored a single point against Whitehall.

But in the last decade, Whitehall has suffered a long series of losses. In 2009, they ended a 17-game losing streak only be defeating a small school with a rookie program.

This year, however, is different.

The 2010 Railroaders are more like the teams from 75 years ago, as they’ve compiled a 4-1 record and are near the top of the Adirondack League.

On Oct. 9, Whitehall lived up to their 1930s heritage, defeating Warrensburg 48 to 7.

Most of the points and yardage gains were due to sophomore running back Josh Hoagland.

He gained a total of 245 ground yards on 24 carries, scoring six touchdowns, including a reception of a screen pass for a gain of 43 yards and a touchdown.

Warrensburg, who had only 19 players suited up for the game, slipped to a season record of 1-4.

Whitehall scored their first touchdown after extinguishing a Warrensburg possession and running 15 plays ending with an 18-yard run by Hoagland.

In the next quarter, the Railroader ’ offense couldn’t be stopped, while their defense squelched any Burgher effort.

Hoagland scored four times on various running plays, including one that was a 96-yard gain. Quarterback Codie Bascue contributed another touchdown.

In the game’s first half, the Railroader defense held the Burghers to a mere 11 carries, with a cumulative loss of minus-11 yards.

Warrensburg’s talented quarterback Mike Curtis kept the score from being an embarrassing shutout by running 28 yards and eluding tacklers. The run capped off a fourthquarter drive to score a touchdown.

The game statistics also reveal the problems Warrensburg encountered. The Burghers fumbled three times and lost the ball two times while Whitehall had no turnovers, plus Warrensburg was hit with five penalties while Whitehall had none, and Warrensburg threw two interceptions.

On a more pleasant note for the Burghers, they gained 100 yards on nine passes completed of 29 attempts.

Next week, the Burghers take on Cambridge, the Class D conference leader, a team that is currently ranked number nine in New York State.

Injuries cancel Warriors’ Soccer squad steamrolling through season game; season cut short

Mechanicville 21, Lake George 14 MECHANICVILLE — Mechanicville not only dampened Lake George’s playoff hopes by handing them a defeat Oct. 8, but injuries they dished out during the game caused a forfeit by the Warriors of the Oct. 15 game against Hoosick Falls.

Warrior coach Jeff Bennett announced Oct. 11 the game would be cancelled because injuries suffered by five players in the Mechanicville game sidelined them for this week, reducing the number of eligible players to 14 — two less than the minimum required by conference rules.

In his announcement, Bennett noted 21 athletes signed up for football this year, and the Warriors fielded 19 players for the Mechanicville game because two were already out due to injuries.

He added that Lake George, a Class C school in athletics, has a 2010 enrollment number just five students more than the number allowed for Class D, a Northern Conference division in which they’ve often competed in recent years.

In the Mechanicville game, The Red Raiders’ defense contained the Warriors’ powerful running game in a 21-14 defeat for what was to be the second-to-last game of the regular season.

Despite their thin roster, the Warriors put up a formidable fight and kept the game competitive.

Mechanicville running back David Funaro gained 92 yards and scored all three touchdowns. The last Funaro run, near the end of the game, sealed the victory.

The Warriors running back Alex Liucci led the Warriors campaign by gaining 75 yards on five carries and scoring a touchdown on an 18-yard run. Marty Zivica scored the second goal in the third quarter, and converted the touchdown by dashing into the end zone.

Standout Warrior receiver Matt McGowan provided a bright spot in the game statistics: he caught four passes for 147 yards.

With the loss, Lake George dropped to 3-3, and Mechanicville boosted its record to 3-2.

With the loss, the talented and promising Lake George team was forced into a position of needing a win against Hoosick Falls to have any shot for the playoffs. A win would have been a dramatic upset: Hoosick Falls is currently ranked No. 4 for all C schools in the state.

Volleyball action Lake George 3 Hadley-Luzerne 0 LAKE LUZERNE — The Lake George Warriors’ volleyball team got back into their winning groove Oct. 8, as they recovered from an upset defeat earlier in the week and recorded a solid win over the Hadley-Luzerne Eagles.

The game scores were 5-18, 25-11, and 25-21.

A large number of Lake George players collaborated in the win, and their team effort was reflected in the statistics.

Erin Blunt tallied 10 service points, three aces, five kills and three digs. Kelly Flaherty recorded five points, six kills, one block and one dig, Katy Munzenmaier added eight kills and three digs, and Courtney Casey had 20 assists, 13 points, six aces, one kill and four digs. Chelsea Sipowicz added 10 points, four aces and nine digs.

Lake George improved to 7-1 in the Adirondack League and 10-2 overall.

LAKE GEORGE — Each year in recent history, veteran Lake George varsity boys soccer coach Blake White and his staff takes a group of promising players, and turns the squad into a well-honed machine that contends for the Adirondack League crown.

This evolution, from raw potential to outstanding achievement, is a tradition for the Lake George soccer program.

This year ’s Warrior squad, which has surpassed expectations of area sports observers, provides a good example of this annual transition.

The 2010 Warrior team, with three games left to play as of Monday, was 90-1 in the league, and 10-1-1 overall, despite a relatively youthful lineup, which includes five sophomores.

Some of them were members of the 2009 squad, which he said was talented, but struggled to score goals.

“This year, the offense is clicking and we’re able to score goals — our guys are finding ways to win the close games,” White said. “They have a knack for making plays and stops when we need them.”

One of the chief catalysts this year is David Bruno, a 2009 all-league sweeper on defense, who this year was moved to the offensive position of forward. As of Monday, he’d scored nine goals this season. He’s been working side-byside with Mason Vreugde, who also has impressive statistics — the two athletes have been teaming up effectively to score goals, White said.

The team’s defense also has been performing well this year, despite the fact there’s only one returning varsity player in the backfield. Three new defenders keeping opponents at bay are Tripp Peacock, Jackson Donnelly, and Sasha Goodman, who are working in a new formation that’s producing the intended results.

Top this off with a new goalie, Ryan Moll, who’s given up only five goals all year. New this year, Moll was elevated to varsity goalkeeper after the coaching staff recognized his size and athleticism represented good potential. White said Warrior goalie coach Adam Pensel, a former goalie for Lake George, has been working with him do develop his hands and instincts.

“Adam turned Ryan into a really solid keeper and this has been huge for us,” White said.

Other positive factors include the depth and distribution of talent on the team. Athleticism is well distributed among the players, considering that no less than 15 players have scored goals this year.

“I can substitute and not tell the difference,” White said, noting their good attitude toward the game, and each other, particularly no resentment on behalf of older players towards the younger starters.

“This is the nicest group of kids — they all get along, they like practice and work hard, and the older guys realize many of the younger players are really talented,” White said, noting the squad’s smooth teamwork. “They’re creating really good scoring opportunities with their passing.”

Also important, White said, is the stability of coaching, noting junior varsity soccer coach Mike McLaughlin has been working in tandem with him for 12 years or so.

White, who’s been at the helm for 29 years, praised McLaughlin and modified soccer coach John Lewis for providing the continuity in the players’ skill development and teaching the Lake George style of play, which includes using the width of the field, spreading out the play, and concentrating on ball possession.

As of Monday, the Warriors were facing their biggest challenge of the 2010 season: a showdown with Fort Ann, which was enjoying an identical 9-0-1 record. After that game is a matchup with Salem Oct. 15, and one against North Warren Oct. 18. The squad will likely meet up with Fort Ann for the league championship the evening of Friday, Oct. 22, in the Golden Goal dome.

HARTFORD — Warrensburg’s woes continued Oct. 8 in their volleyball efforts, as they lost their 10th straight game in their winless 2010 season.

The latest defeat came at the hands of Hartford, which is 6-2 for 2010.

Hartford won the games 25-11, 25-13, and 25-6.

The Tanagers were led by multi-sport athlete Christina Petteys’ 15 points and seven aces. For the Burghers, Cheyenne Palmateer led her team with four points and four digs.

Hartford 4, Lake George 1

LAKE GEORGE — A fired-up Hartford volleyball team pulled off an upset Oct. 6 as they caught the league-leading Lake George team off guard and defeated them in a lengthy match that incorporated four games.

The Hartford wins tallied 25-16, 25-15, 19-25, and 25-15 for the match, the Warriors first loss in Adirondack League play over the 2010 season.

One game statistic showed the intensity of effort that Hartford invested in the upset: they tallied no less than 58 digs.

Tanager Setter Kayla Casey placed balls well in her 28 assists, allowing her teammates to shine. Christina Petteys recorded 10 kills, 20 digs and 15 points, and Brittany Brayman tallied 12 points and 16 digs to lead their team. Gwenn Harsha added 13 kills and 12 digs, and Morgan Wicks had 9 kills, 10 digs and 10 points.

For Lake George, now 8-1 in the league and 9-2 overall, Courtney Casey tallied 10 points, 2 aces, 20 assists and 7 digs and Erin Blunt contributed two points, one ace, four kills, and eight digs.

Kelly Flaherty added four points, nine kills and 4 blocks, and Chelsea Sipowicz had two points and 17 digs.

Hadley-Luzerne 3, Warrensburg 0

LAKE LUZERNE — The Hadley-Luzerne Eagles recorded a convincing 3-0 volleyball victory over Warrensburg Oct. 6 with game scores of 25-9, 25-9, and 25-10.

Chelsea Bourdeau led the Eagles with nine aces, 10 assists and three kills. Ashleigh Bourdeau contributed 10 kills and two assists.

Leading Warrensburg’s effort was Katie Riddle with five points, 14 assists and two aces. Ashlee Leary added 11 assists and four digs.

They also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks, and these statistics indicate how hard Salem’s goalie Brianna Thibeau must have worked — she had 10 saves for her team, while Warrior Sophie Bruno recorded two.

LAKE LUZERNE — The Eagles pulled off an upset win over the talented Bolton girls soccer squad Oct. 5, due to a goal by Kassandra Tremaine on a swift, accurate kick by Sequoya Fitzpatrick.

Both squads’ defense worked hard in the matchup.

Bolton held the lead offensively, keeping the ball for much of the time in their opponents’ territory. Bolton outshot Hadley-Luzerne 17-7 and tallied a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, but the one savvy charge by Hadley-Luzerne made the difference.

Hadley-Luzerne’s goalkeeper Kirstin Jones made 17 saves, and Rosie Denne had four.

With the loss, Bolton slips a notch to 4-2 in the Adirondack League, and Hadley-Luzerne improves to 2-4.

OLD FORGE — Bolton’s aggressive early-game offensive play made the difference as they beat Old Forge to take third place Oct. 10, in the Hamilton County school’s namesake tournament.

The consolation game 1-0 win in the Old Forge Tournament was on the back of Billy Smith’s goal for Bolton just two minutes or so into the game. With an assist from teammate Jake Nittmann, Smith blasted the ball into the net.

Freshman rookie goalie Alex Maxam made 10 saves in the victory. Maxam was substituting for goalkeeper Mitchell Jordon, who separated his shoulder Saturday.

Helping the shutout effort were junior varsity players Josh Persons, Colin Dowd, Eric Onjack and Evan Malone.

With the win, Bolton’s record improves to 5-5-1.

On Oct. 9, Bolton had earlier lost its chance to compete for the tourney championship after losing to Johnsburg 1-0. The Jaguars’ victory was due to a goal by Kevin Conner from about 20 yards out during the game’s first half.

WARRENSBURG — A fired-up, energetic and determined Warrensburg squad, ignoring their 1-9 season record, pushed the League-leading Lake George to the limit Oct. 8 with an offensive onslaught, but the Warriors prevailed with a 3-2 win, Erik Jones, Tom Devlin and David Bruno scored one goal each in Lake George's slim victory.

North Warren 4, Hadley-Luzerne 1 LAKE LUZERNE — The North Warren Soccer team continued their winning ways Oct. 7, as they employed teamwork and their well-distributed talent to defeat Hadley-Luzerne 4-1 in a Adirondack League matchup.

Four North Warren players scored as the Cougars put forth an aggressive, balanced effort.

Greg Dower booted in a goal and recorded an assist. Teammates Bryan Beckler, Tyler Jensen and Chase Cortez each scored a goal, and Ethan Schenke tallied two assists.

The productive Cougar offensive lineup tallied 18 shots on goal to Hadley-Luzerne’s 3. North Warren also led 11-2 in corner kicks.

Coach Jason Humiston said Garth Griffen played well in midfield. Cougar goalies Kristian Seeley, considered one of the best goalkeepers in the league, recorded six saves for his team.

With the win, North Warren advances to an Adirondack League record of 6-2-1, and 7-2-1 overall.

Lake George 6, Corinth 0 CORINTH — Lake George Boys Soccer team’s persistent offensive lineup kept the ball in Corinth territory for most of the game Oct. 6, as they steamrolled the Tomahawks 6-0.

Mason Vreugde and David Bruno led the offensive charge, as they each booted two goals. Bruno set the game tempo early, blasting a goal just a minute or so into the game. Tripp Heacock and Aaron Chambers each scored a goal apiece in the victory. Lake George recorded a 28-2 advantage in shots on goal, and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Warriors, unbeaten in the Adirondack League as of Tuesday, tallied their sixth shutout in the 2010 season — a testament to the work of goalie Ryan Moll, who is new this year but coached personally by Lake George alumnus Adam Pensel to a high level of achievement. In the Corinth game, he hardly saw action, however, as he made a mere two saves.

The Lake George offensive onslaught prompted one favorable statistic for Corinth: their goalkeeper Devan Kilmartin tallied 18 saves.
