Large crowd expected for ‘World’s Largest’ sale Vendor participation way up for 2010

A fixture of fall in the region, Warrensburg’s World’s Largest Garage Sale event annually attracts 70,000 visitors or more to browse through the wares of hundreds of vendors and as many as 1,000 private garage sales in the area.

Gaslight buyout agreement moves forward Regional $39 million

WARRENSBURG — A normally peaceful town known as “Gateway to the Adirondacks” is going to get its gates crashed this weekend, as tens of thousands of people descend on Warrensburg for the World’s Largest Garage sale.

This virtual stampede for the mother-ofall community sales — which has earned the town national attention — depends on the weather, of course.

As of Sept. 28, local oddsmakers were predicting this year ’s sale would be a gangbuster, as vendor reservations for properties are way ahead of last year, and the weekend weather forecasts looked favorable.

Town to receive $210,000 for its stake

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — A buyout of the town of Lake George’s interest in the Gaslight Village project is under way. However, other government entities are calling for a payoff to the town of $210,000 to exit the partnership and turn over its 19 percent interest in both the West Brook Environmental Park and the 2.5 acre festival space it contains to the village of Lake George.

According to a draft contract approved Monday night by the Lake George Village Board, the village government will be bankrolling the payoff sum to go to the town,

and the three local environmental groups involved in the project will be together refunding the village for half of it over three years, paying the village $35,000 in three annual installments. The county’s stake in the project will remain the same, although they will be assuming sole responsibility for the maintenance of the environmental project once completed, according to the draft contract.

As of Tuesday, a meeting of the Warren County Board of Supervisors was scheduled to ratify the contract.

The 25-acre West Brook Park, once Gaslight Village, is to include constructed wetlands to purify migrating stormwater, as well as host bike and pedestrian trails, informational kiosks, nature trails, several gazebos and scenic overlooks.

The Bolton Community Spelling Bee is now being planned, and all folks in the region are urged to save the date so they can join in the fun as participants, observers, or cheerleaders. The Bee will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 14, in the Bolton Central School Gymnasium. This event is a fundraiser for the Bolton Free Library.

All residents and business owners are welcome to participate in this new and exciting event. Bee organizers are looking for as many teams as possible — each team is to include three to five spellers. There will be an entry fee of $40 a team, but businesses can collaborate on forming a team to create more of a challenge.

The event will be no more than three hours with elimination rounds to determine the best spellers in Bolton Landing. Awards will be given out for not only the best speller, but also for many other categories, such as Most Creative Speller, Favorite Team Mascot, Best Team Costumes, and the Outstanding Team Spirit. The awards ceremony following the Bee will include refreshments.

Locals seek solution to state’s plan to axe island trash pickup

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com BOLTON LANDING — Concerned of the environmental damage that could occur if the Department of Environmental Conservation follows through on its proposal to discontinue trash pickup on their own Lake George island campsites, area officials and environmentalists have concocted a plan with DEC employees they hope will be approved by their DEC bosses.

State Sen Elizabeth O’C Little, R-Queensbury; state Assemblywoman Teresa L. Sayward, R-Willsboro; representatives of various environmental groups and lake agency chiefs proposed to DEC middle-managers at a meeting Sept. 17, they add a garbage service charge to campsite reservation fees to pay specifically for trash pickup.

Area political officials and lake agency chiefs predicted the state’s pending “Carry-in, carry-out” policy would result in trash despoiling the islands and being dumped in the lake.

Local officials attending the meeting who routinely see the boaters head for their campsites, said the campers sometimes take several boat-loads full of consumable supplies for a week’s stay, representing a large amount of trash generated per camper.

“I’ve seen some folks take a half-hour to unload their SUVs and vans, then transport three boat-loads of stuff to their island campsites,” Hague supervisor Dan Belden said. “A lot of this ends up as trash, and to cut off garbage pickup on the islands would be a terrible, terrible mistake.”

Queensbury supervisor William VanNess, who has spent years as a police officer patrolling the lake, said cutting out trash pickup would not only cause noxious litter to collect, but the trash would prompt infestations of rodents, skunks and raccoons, posing a hazard to campers. He said people piloting $200,000 boats would not want to fill up large garbage bags with trash when they depart — they’d likely dispose of it on the island or by tossing the trash into

Lake George town supervisor Frank McCoy said such illegal disposal would likely degrade the lake’s water quality, perhaps to the point that lakewater can’t be used as a drinking water source as it is now.

Bolton Town supervisor Ron Conover said the degradation of the lake and its shoreline would cause more harm and expense than any temporary savings from axing trash collection could reap.

“Think of what’s in jeopardy here,” he said.

Walt Lender of the Lake George Association said he was concerned of the consequences.

“It would be a huge mistake to stop the pickup service,” he said.

rates, the DEC officials balked, citing the revenues go into the state’s general fund and would not be earmarked to pay for trash removal.

Citing the state’s budget crunch, the DEC officials said their bosses were under the gun to drastically reduce expenses, and axing trash pickup on the state’s three island campgrounds on lake George, with 387 total campsites would save $98,000 or so annually. DEC hauled away 231 tons of garbage from the campsite dumpsters on Narrows Island, Glen Island and Long Island in 2009.

They said that the Lake George islands generate a profit, but money is necessary to subsidize losses at campgrounds elsewhere.

The local officials then proposed island campers be mandated to purchase special trash bags and disposal stickers, with the revenue going to trash disposal by a private disposal contractor.

Faced with skepticism from the DEC bureau managers over whether this was possible, local officials reminded them DEC already charges campers a hefty $9 service fee to pay a contracted telemarketers who book campsite reservations for them. They proposed a trash disposal service fee of $2 to $5 could likewise be collected from campers as separate, dedicated charge.

Little said a $5 per day service surcharge could raise $450,000 for trash disposal.

Now, campers pay $25 per night to stay at a campsite. DEC officials are planning to increase that to $30 for out-of-state visitors and to $26 for those in state, while eliminating the trash pickup.

At the conclusion of the meeting, DEC Forest Parks general manager said the proposals made sense. “I’m encouraged by the ideas that were raised here today,” he said.

Little said she and Sayward would be meeting with DEC legislative representatives to hammer out a deal which would be proposed to DEC Commissioner Pete Grannis.

Peter Bauer of The Fund for Lake George predicted Grannis would be responsive to the proposals.

“The proposal emerging from this meeting sounds very workable,” he said. “It’s a solution the Commissioner could embrace.”

Let them rest in peace It has been brought to my attention someone took seasonal decorations of chrysanthemum flowers and scarecrows off of a grave at the Warrensburg Cemetery.

I know many graves there host personal memorabilia and decorations.

To the person or group of individuals who took the decorations off the late George Nemec’s grave, I say, “How dare you?” Do we have to now start a vigilant patrol of our cemeteries?

Town board to consider budget, sewer The Warrensburg Town Board will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m.

Oct. 13, to hear comment on the map and plan for a buildout of the sewer system on Library Avenue Extension, Thomson Street, Third Avenue, Fourth Avenue and Raymond Lane.

Over the years, Bob Griffin Sunoco and his associated auto repair enterprise fared well because of his expert work, attention to detail and reasonable prices.

Over time, Griffin brought his son Rob into the business, and they kept up with progress by installing more and more high-technology diagnostic equipment.

Rob Griffin revealed this week why he joined his father’s enterprise and stuck with his profession through the years.

“I like to learn,” he said. “I learn something every day.”

Griffin & Sons conducts electronic computerized engine analysis, advanced wheel alignment, air conditioning repair and the enterprise is A.S.E. certified and is a NYS inspection station.

Rob’s enthusiasm for snowmobiling and other motorized activities led to him adding Rob’s Motor Sports in 1997 on the north side of the garage. This enterprise features parts and accessories for ATVs, snowmobiles, dirt bikes and motorcycles — plus Rob specializes in setting up customers with new sports vehicle and utility trailers.

Rob Griffin spoke of the reason for the longevity of his businesses.

And most of all, thanks to God for giving the surgeons the skill to perform the operation, he said this week.

Activities and events in the hills There are two Halloween parties in the planning stages at this time. One is to be Saturday, Oct. 23, and yet another Sunday, Oct. 31. The Thurman Volunteer Fire Co. will hold an open monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at the firehouse in Athol.

Challenge to Birdsall nomination rejected

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com THURMAN — Independent town supervisor candidate Evelyn Wood, a Republican, challenged the nomination of Thomas Birdsall as the endorsed Republican candidate for the town of Thurman based on the fact he — chairman of the town G.O.P committee — and one other person cast the two sole votes in a town caucus that placed himself on the ballot.

Wood challenged Birdsall’s nomination on the basis that a mere two votes — one of them representing a conflict of interest — shouldn’t be sufficient to nominate a candidate.

She said the caucus should have been open to all Republicans, and the meeting should have been publicized. If Birdsall hadn’t voted for himself, the result would have been one vote for his candidacy, not representing a majority of the caucus, she said.

Wood’s challenge, however, was declined by the Warren County Board of Elections after a hearing was held on her objections.

Republican Elections Commissioner Mary Beth Casey said that because of the town of Thurman’s status under the election law, and since Thurman has only one election district, two committee members was the proper number of caucus members for the town. The county election commissioners ruled the caucus was conducted legally.

Wood decided in July to run for the post soon after former Supervisor Red Pitkin resigned from the position. The timing of Pitkin’s resignation blocked a Republican primary race, so Wood — an enrolled Republican — launched her campaign as an independent candidate, while Birdsall waited until after the election to run, by declaring his committee’s chosen candidate for the ballot — a committee of two, himself and Ed Binder. Birdsall has said he didn’t declare a candidacy sooner, because he wasn’t intending to run until several people urged him to.

This personal third tour is under the guidance of “Big Chief” Herbert “Bill” Smith and “Little Chief” Kid Manzer. Hospital nearly ready for patients The directors of the Glens Falls Hospital are making plans for the opening of the new hospital which is nearing completion and is expected to open Oct. 1, 1910. The building is located on Park Street, just east of the present building and the new three-story building will accommodate 125 patients.

Area officials last year characterized this proposed broadband circuit as vital to the economic survival of Adirondack communities. The giant fiberoptic loop would have brought telecommunication and high-speed Internet service to vast regions of Essex, Clinton, Franklin, Warren, Hamilton and Washington counties.

The network was envisioned to help boost job opportunities in the region and prompt extensive improvements in services related to education, health care, public service and commerce. The proposed broadband infrastructure was to include high-speed Internet connections, wireless phone, television, and data transmission — serving hospitals and health clinics, colleges and secondary schools and law enforcement authorities as well as businesses and residents.

Warren County Board of Supervisors chairman Fred Monroe said the news of the grant denial, which he received Monday morning, was “distressing.”

“This is a huge disappointment, and the consequences are enormous,” he said. “This broadband initiative was vital to the greater Adirondack region — it was the number-one priority of Congressman Murphy’s office.”

Foster ’s hobby was to build violins and he built one for John, called the “Old Squire” which John played regularly with the Tubbs Concert Orchestra in town. The Warrensburgh News was at one time situated on Elm Street, directly behind the bandstand. John L. Tubbs died in 1937.)

Wedding bells chime for local couples Thurman J. Merrick and Miss Jessie Edmunds, both of Lake George, were married Sunday afternoon, Sept. 18, 1910 by the Rev. W.S. Warren at the Baptist parsonage in Warrensburgh.

James A. Ingraham of Athol and Miss Clara Combs of North Thurman were married Monday evening, Sept. 19, 1910 by the Rev. E.H. Hovey at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. David I. Combs in North Thurman.

Moldy time capsule unearthed Donald T. Paige has been doing some remodeling at his home in Stony Creek and he pulled out some newspapers out of his walls, which were commonly used in bygone days as insulation. He brought along a sample and the aged newsprint was so fragile that it was not safe for me to even breathe on them. However, they offered a tantalizing glimpse of the world of long ago.

These editions of the Post-Star blasted headlines of shocking world scandals across their front pages.

The artist Adolphe Steinheil was killed Nov. 14, 1908 by the Grand Duke Alexis of Russia, uncle of the Czar, who than killed himself. Mme. Japy, stepmother of Mme. Steinheil, was not slain but became so upset at seeing her son-in-law murdered that she choked to death on her false teeth which she swallowed in her excitement.

Modern-day area residents have said that it is amazing that things that occurred 100 or more years ago are happenis affiliated with the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

Lowe said the broadband application was ranked second in the state.

CBN applied for first round stimulus monies last year, but was denied. Backed by local and state officials — as well as federal representatives — the organization reapplied this year with a significantly improved application.

Lowe cited stiff competition as the reason for its secondround demise.

“We know our application was very competitive, but there is a limited amount of funds and many good applications from all over the country,” he said. “They don’t share their ranking process with us, but we think it’s probably a fair one.”

The 203 successful federal broadband grants, announced Monday by the U.S. Commerce Department, can be found at www.commerce.gov/news/press-releases. The Web site cites the successful grants are the “final awards” under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act’s broadband initiative.

The grant denial was a surprise to local officials, who had attended regional broadband forum last year at which federal officials, who were slated to review the grants, listened intently to the North Country’s critical communication needs and depressed economies — and these officials had expressed positivism about the grant application’s prospects.

Murphy and various regional economic development officials could not be reached Monday evening for comment.

A total of $206.8 million in broadband grant awards include grants supporting similar projects in California and Colorado.

The broadband network, as proposed in the grant application, was to feature fiber-optic hubs in Glens Falls, Chestertown and Ticonderoga.

The plans called for constructing a 425-mile loop through Essex, Franklin and Clinton counties, serving 22 communities. This optic-cable circuit would stretch in an arch across northern New York from the St. Regis Mohawk reservation eastward through Malone and Rouses Point, then south to Plattsburgh and Ticonderoga. This circuit was expected to be extended through rural Warren, Hamilton and Washington counties in a second phase of the proposed buildout.

A northern portion of the loop was funded late last year in a $39.7 million grant award to a partnership headed up by the Development Authority of the North Country. The award funded broadband access in New York’s western and far-north counties.

The CBN Connect’s broadband network for Clinton, Franklin, Essex, Warren, Hamilton and Washington counties was expected to be constructed and active within two years.

Lowe said his organization would be seeking other sources of funding for their six-county broadband plans.

Northern New York wasn’t entirely ignored in the most recent federal broadband awards doling out stimulus funds.

The grants announced included a $642,000 award to the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe to fund five new public computer centers with 60 workstations to provide career training to an estimated 500 users each week.

Lowe said CBN Connect’s board of directors, at their upcoming October meeting, will be discussing the prospects of broadband in the North Country in light of the grant denial.

“We’re still assessing what our next steps are,” he said.

ing again today. For example, a headline told of a mine cavein on Nov. 30, 1909 in the London Copper Mine near Knoxville, Tenn. In the news of Sept. 2010, 33 Chilean miners are suffering months of underground imprisonment in a cave-in at a mine in San Jose, Chili.

A columnist in 1909 wrote that wild geese “never feed without dispatching scouts or sentries.” The sentry diligently scans the area looking for danger to the flock while the rest feed in peace. He notes that after a time one of the sentries tires of his job and goes up to a fellow goose and gives it a gentle peck on the back and that bird stops grazing and dutifully takes over his turn as the group’s guard.

Today I am sitting at my computer and I can see through my window a flock of nine geese in my back yard following this same ritual.

On the fashion page of one of these 1908 newspapers, it is described that an adaptable directoire costume for the season for ladies is the satin pantaloon which replaced the petticoat, “which is rather interesting and quaint.”

In 1910 the Boston Store in Glens Falls was selling “Rengo Belt Corsets” for ladies which accomplished the reduction of hips and produced beautifully molded body lines below the waist. They had double boning throughout with rust proof watch-spring steel which was guaranteed to not break through the garment and jab the wearer. Whale bones were a thing of the past.

Max A. Arnold and his refined repertoire organization was bringing the Keystone Dramatic Co. to Glens Falls for a performance. Renowned stage actress Daisy Burtch was to star in the drama “Betty of the Bowery.” The Saturday matinee was 10 cents.

I personally know of three other graves in the same cemetery that have had items stolen. It amazes me that someone could be that insensitive and hurtful.

It is pretty sad that a grieving family cannot even put out flowers or decorations and expect them to be there the very next day.

Although event sponsors are expected to delve into hyperbole, Kenyon seemed to back up her prediction. She said the weather couldn’t be anything but perfect, considering a week full of rain prior to the sale.

“I’m positive the skies will be all rained out by Friday, she said.

Each year, as many as 70,000 people swarm through the streets of Warrensburg to discover bargains and collectibles during the World’s Largest Garage Sale.

Featuring 1,000 or so garage sales and vendors, it’s huge.

The event has attracted national attention, and its fame has endured for decades.

The sale has set records and launched knock-off events.

It’s helped local families cope with winter fuel bills. It’s earned its place in the Guinness Book of Records. Most of all, it’s given tens of thousands of people a reason to visit Warrensburg and experience the town’s charm.

For two days, the streets of Warrensburg are awash in humanity and vehicles cram the town for a two-day frenzy of bargain hunting.

Whether it’s collectibles, specialty or distressed goods, vehicle parts, antiques, old toys, vintage jewelry, household goods, tools — or virtually anything imaginable — it’s all available at Warrensburg’s huge sale.

The event begins this year at 9 a.m. Saturday. Oct. 2, and runs until 6 p.m., with the same hours for Sunday, Oct. 3 — and these are just the sanctioned hours. The advance sales start up to two days earlier.

less of the traffic and inconvenience. They urge all to return and enjoy a visit to experience the true character of the town — when there are 3,800 year-round residents here.

The event is not just about bargains. There’s also a streetfair atmosphere, with plenty of carnival food — from “blooming” onions, sausage-and-pepper sandwiches and fried bread, to home-cooked food prepared by local churches and community organizations.

The carny food will be concentrated in a food ccourt at the Warrensburg Health Center parking lot — a new feature this year.

Also new this year is free handicapped parking at the intersection of Main Street and Stewart Farrar Avenue — that is, if you can make it through bumper-to bumper traffic.

Also, the local fire company will be renting out in-town spaces beside their firehouse on Elm Street.

Also new is a lineup of entertainment Saturday and Sunday at both the Health Center lot and at the uptown Floyd Bennett Memorial Bandstand. Professional and amateur musicians and entertainers have volunteered their time to make their talents known. Rock n’ Roll, country music, and blues are all on the schedule, which includes teen and pre-teen entertainers.

A recent addition to the sale is a gift basket of goods and services donated by local businesses. Raffle tickets can be bought at various locations through town.

Here’s the scoop on how to avoid frustration of crushing traffic and maximizing time bargain-hunting.

• Arrive Thursday or Friday, check into an area inn or motel, or get into town before 7:15 a.m. on the weekend. A lot of vendors are setting up before the weekend, and many savvy shoppers who know this are getting “first pick” of a wide range of wares.

• If arriving on the weekend, get into Warrensburg as early as possible, and take the Northway to exits 22, 24 or 25.

• Avoid Northway Exit 23, the primary road into Warrensburg, since it becomes very congested. By 8:30 or 9 a.m.

Saturday, traffic can be backed up for nearly two miles onto I-87 Northway. If you can make it off Exit 23, take a right turn to go via East Schroon River Road and follow signs to a free parking lot north of town and take a free trolley downtown.

• From Northway Exit 22, turn left onto Route 9 and drive just a few miles north to Warrensburg.

• From Northway Exit 24, go south on Schroon River Road and park at the county fairgrounds where shuttle buses will take visitors in and out of town.

• Or, from Northway Exit 25, head south out of Chestertown on Route 9 into Warrensburg.

Advisory to residents and visitors: From Friday, Oct. 3 through Sunday, Oct. 5, there is no parking on Main Street from the Bandstand to Stewart Farrar Street, and on Horicon Avenue in the hamlet.

This parking ban has been approved, and will be enforced, by the Warren County Sheriff ’s Department, and has been passed as a local ordinance by the Warrensburg Town Board.

Those who disobey this ban will likely have their vehicle towed.

Also, motorists are urged not to block driveways, fire hydrants or public access, nor park on private property without permission.

Event organizer Cheryl Kenyon urged all not only to obey the rules, but have a good time.

“The town’s gonna be rockin’ this year,” she said.

TO THE TAXPAYERS OF LAKE GEORGE: After an intense week of negotiations with the LGA and the Fund for Lake George, the Lake George Town Board feels confident that we have the framework for an agreement for the Town to be bought out of the Gaslight project. Therefore we will sign the papers that allows for the construction of the environmental wetlands project to begin. While the Town Board supports the south side environmental project we do not share the same vision for the north side with the County and the Village. We are also very wary that without a venue to generate revenue, this project is going to become very expensive to maintain in the future. Therefore the Town Board feels it is in the best interest for the Town of Lake George to exit the project now before it becomes a financial burden to the taxpayers.

To the people who misguidedly say we do not support protecting the lake, nothing can be further from the truth. We led the way with banning phosphorus fertilizers in the Town of Lake George, something the LGA and the Fund heralded as a major accomplishment in keeping the water quality of the lake pure. When the details of this agreement emerge it will become clear that we contributed mightily to this project. In conjunction the Town of Lake George paid the taxes on this site for two years while negotiations were in progress for this piece of property to be acquired. Without us, there would be no project. To the people who say we sold out too cheap and could have gotten more, you were not in the room. We made the best we could get , got it done quickly and did not negotiate in the newspapers. We had always wanted to contribute to the environmental project and we made a fair deal for all involved. For those who say we “took our toys and went home, when we didn’t get our own way” -- Not true. I have assured Walt and Peter that any assistance they need on the south side we will be as helpful as we can. Some people may feel a sense of abandonment, that the Town should have stayed in the project for the protection of the Lake. The Lake will be protected, and if you as an individual feel the need to do more, write out a check to the LGA or the Fund for Lake George. Unfortunately, there were just too many philosophical differences with our soon to be former partners. At this time I wish to thank my fellow Town Board members, who supported and guided me throughout these negotiations. I could not have done it without your help.

I would especially wish to thank Councilman Vinnie Crocitto who calmed me down when I became stressed, propped me up when I began to waiver, and acted as a sounding board on a nightly basis. Thank you all.

A Cameron descendant discovers his roots

Cameron of Atlanta Ga., heard recently about the effort to officially name a mountain in Warrensburg as Jimmy’s Peak, after his great-great-great-great-great grandfather, “Tory” James Cameron, who established a homestead on the mountain in the 1700s.

So two weeks ago, Ken Cameron, raised in Albany, visited the region to learn more about his roots.

While Cameron routinely visits several high school friends every few years in Schroon Lake, he decided this fall to take a detour to learn about his heritage.

With documents and pictures in hand, he decided to uncover information about “Tory” Jim. Ken contacted me, and I volunteered to give him a guided tour. I am not an expert on James Cameron or local history however I do attend the First Presbyterian Church of Warrensburg and the Cameron tartan hangs on the wall along with an 1804 charter forming the church — so we started there.

After viewing the tartan, we went to Richards Library nearby, where we made copies of a few photographs of a Cameron family reunion in the 1940s. The photos were taken in front of the Cameron farmhouse on the Stony Creek Road in Thurman.

This reunion was well documented in newspapers as far south as Albany, where generations of Ken’s family lived — his great grandfather Edward Madison Cameron founded the Cameron Lumber Co. in the city.

It was in the 1940s, around the time of the reunion, that New York State dedicated a historical marker to “Tory” Jim Cameron. Ken and I visited the marker, which describes James Cameron as a pioneer who settled in the valley in 1773, and notes he is buried 100 feet west of the sign. The marker points out the ridge across the river as being the locally renowned Jimmy’s Peak. We walked up into the woods looking for the the area believed to be James final resting place beside his wife

Christian, or Christy Ann. Then, we wandered over to the area my Grandfather Rexford Reynolds Sr. had showed me when I was a youngster and explained that this was “Tory” Jim’s homestead plot.

I asked Ken if his ancestors were calling to him and he smiled. He looked off into the river at the eddy, the island and the mountains as if he felt completely at home even though he had never been here before.

We talked about our lives and how glad he was that a peak had been Ken Cameron, visiting Atlanta Ga., reviews documents relating to named after his family. We traveled back to the Cameron Cemetery, his ancestors, the Cameron clan, with Pearl Cameron in her where he took many pictures of the various Cameron gravestones.

WARRENSBURG — Warrensburg’s late-game comeback effort didn’t overcome the solid play of Bishop Gibbons during a football matchup Sept. 25, on the Burgher home field.

The result was a 16-12 loss for Warrensburg, which was beginning to get into a groove this year of scrappy defense, explosive offensive plays and thrilling action from their special teams.

Strong defense from both teams resulted in a low-scoring game that could have yielded a win for either team.

The Burghers drove the ball to just within the 10-yard line with 42 seconds left in the game, but the flypaper Bishop Gibbons passing defense snagged an interception that ended both the Burghers’ turnaround attempt and the game.

Responding to a three-yard touchdown run by Bishop Gibbons’ Johnny Villanueva in the second quarter, Warrensburg scored a touchdown with a six-yard pass from Mike Curtis to Zach Baer.

While Bishop Gibbons led the Burghers 8-6 at the half, the Burghers opened up the second half with a savvy special teams play that fired up the crowd.

The Burghers booted an onside kick player Matt Boodman recovered, leading to a relentless drive capped off with a touchdown on a three-yard run by Lucas Nelson. But Bishop Gibbons fought back with a solid drive featuring a 54yard run by Villanueva and a two-point conversion, giving Bishop Gibbons the lead for good.

Bishop Gibbons racked up 235 yards on 37 carries, with Villanueva carrying the ball 24 times for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Warrensburg tallied 118 yards on 35 carries, led

Warrensburg’s air play smothered Bishop Gibbons, as they threw for 143 yards gained to Bishop Gibbons’ 36. Nelson led all receivers by a wide margin with 60 yards.

Kalvin Duell and Nelson each had an interception, while Adam Langworthy and Desmond Allen each had two sacks for the Burghers.

Both teams avoided fumbles, and observers were pleased the Burghers were holding onto the ball considering past problems in this regard.

LAKE GEORGE — In a matchup between a legendary soccer program and a relatively new one, Lake George steamrolled Warrensburg Sept. 24, with an 11-1 offensive onslaught.

Warrior goalie Ryan Moll and defensive player Gavin Garry each tallied their first varsity goals in the matchup.

Demonstrating their team’s depth, seven other Lake George players scored, including Mason Vruegde with three goals and two assists. Peter Valenti assisted three.

Highlights of the game for the Burghers included standout Ryan Belden driving in a long free kick, and goalie Aaron Seeley working up a sweat in tallying eight saves.

For a large part of the game, the soccer ball was kicked around in Warrensburg territory. The Warriors had 34 shots on goal while Warrensburg had five.

Warrensburg drops to 1-5, with the win, and Lake George improved to 4-0-1 in the Adirondack League and 5-1-1 overall.

Lake George 0, Hartford 0 - 2 OT LAKE GEORGE — The Lake George defense was in the spotlight for the earlyseason soccer showdown Sept. 22, between the two top teams in the Adirondack League, which ended up in a tie.

Warrior goalie Ryan Moll made 15 saves to retain a 0-0 tie which extended into double overtime. During the matchup, Hartford outshot the Warriors 22-11.

Both teams remain unbeaten in league play.

And this year is no exception — Lake George underscored the point Sept. 23, as four of their players scored one goal each to defeat Bolton 4-0.

The win secured Lake George’s status as the only unbeaten team in the Adirondack League. Prior to the game, Bolton also had a loss-free league record.

With the loss, Bolton — which has a highly competitive squad — slips to 3-1 in the league.

The Warriors advanced to 4-0.

Panther Ashley Loomis also scored a goal. Both goalies were busy in the game, as Johnsburg’s Cassandra Prouty had five saves and Warrensburg’s Kacey Duell had eight.

Warriors defeat Hoosic Valley, look toward Granville

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — The Warrior football team launched an offensive ground assault and a noholds-barred defensive attack to steamroll Hoosic Valley Sept. 25 by a score of 41-0.

But the score’s margin was undoubtedly widened, however by Hoosic Valley’s starting quarterback being sidelined for the game due to a concussion.

Injuries were on Lake George Coach Jeff Bennett’s mind Monday when he reflected on the game.

While Hoosic Valley has a young developing program, teams that the Warriors have yet to face this season are tough, veteran squads.

“I’m glad we got out of the Hoosic Valley game healthy, so we’re ready to take on Granville Fri-

day.”

This last week’s game reflected a formidable, productive effort on defense, he said.

The Warriors defense not only stopped the Hoosic runners at the line of scrimmage, but they penetrated their opposing line to force yardage losses.

Hoosic’s statistics tell the grim story: they had no first downs, negative yardage and no completed passes — plus the Warriors forced six fumbles and recovered them all.

“I felt we played well,” Bennett said. “ Our kids did a nice job executing the plays.”

Most of the Warrior yardage was gained on the ground, with touchdowns scored by senior running back Alex Liucci, quarterback Willie Blunt and ball carrier Mary Zivica. Blunt tallied three touchdowns on runs of 24, 11 and 17 yards, Marty Zivica ran for touchdowns of 19 and 5 yards, and Liucci contributed with a 1-yard goal.

Zivica tallied 67 yards on nine runs, Blunt gained 46 yards on six carries, and sophomore running back Charles Barber gained 65 yards on 14 carries.

Bennett said his coaching staff made an effort not to run the score up, primarily by rotating players into a variety of positions to diversify their skills, he said.

Backup quarterback Nate Fidd, a sophomore, took over near the end of the halftime and played in the backfield for the rest of the game, gaining valuable experience while advancing the score.

Three of Hoosic Valley’s fumbles were recovered by junior Brand Hunt. Teammates Lee McCabe, Jack Clark and Rob Ford each contributed one fumble recovery each.

With the win, Lake George advances to a 2010 record of 3-1 overall, and is solidly in contention for the area’s Class C crown with three other area teams.

Bennett said Granville will be a formidable foe as it has players with power and good speed.

“We’re going to have to play really good football Friday to stop them,” he said. His players and coaches have been watching game films, scrutinizing plays, and rearranging their plays to run where the weaker opposing players are positioned, he said.

Unlike 2009, when the offense revolved around handoffs to the locomotive Caleb Meroski — who would charge through opponents and rack up unbelievable yards — 2010’s team has diversified talents throughout the squad that are developing rapidly, he said.

“We have a really good quarterback, a good fullback and tailback, and several good receivers, and we’re not loading up on one guy,” he said.

“This year has been a nice surprise — we’ve got more weapons than we had in 2009.”

SCHROON LAKE — A former Olympic trials qualifier led the way in the 14th annual Adirondack Marathon.

Michael Slinskey of Hopewell Junction ran the 26.2-mile course around Schroon Lake in 2 hours, 37 minutes, 47 seconds Sept. 26.

Slinsky’s parents have a home in Warrensburg.

Paul Allison of North Creek was second with a time of 2:40:54.

Lindsey Pierret of Manchester, Conn., a first-time marathon competitor,won the women’s division in 3:07:56. She was seventh overall.

Simone Stoeppler of Germany, who set the course record of 3:04:08 in 1997, was a distant second in the women’s division, finishing in 3:24:02.

In the handcycle event, Jeremy Shortsleeve set a record of 1:42:48.

The old mark belonged to Bill Schwarz who posted a 1:45:32 in 2008.

The marathon had 274 finishers, including a contingent from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and troops from Fort Drum in Watertown.

Thomas Regan of Severance won the accompanying half marathon. He covered the 13.1 miles in 1:20:08.

Sonya Pasquini of Albany was the top woman to finish in 1:32:46.

She was ninth overall.

The half marathon had 526 finishers.

The contract also calls for the demolition of the Cavalcade of Cars building on the festival site, a structure the town government had sought to rehabilitate and use for community events, trade shows and conferences.

After the county recently switched from longstanding support of the town’s rehabilitation effort to calling for demolition of the building, the vote to tear it down occurred Sept. 17. It was only a matter of days before the town officials decided to exit the entire project, based on a belief the maintenance costs would drain taxpayer ’s pocketbooks without a venue they could rent to private entities.

“We are very wary that without a venue to generate revenue, this project is going to become very expensive to maintain in the future,” Lake George Town Supervisor Frank McCoy said in a prepared statement Friday. “It is in the best interest for the town of Lake George to exit the project now be-

fore it becomes a financial burden to the taxpayers.”

Warren County Board of Supervisor Chairman Fred Monroe offered his thoughts Friday on the pending contract.

“I am optimistic we have a workable solution,” Monroe said, referring to the differing concepts for the future of the festival space amongst the village, county, town and environmental groups.

In light of the pending contract, the town signed off on the demolition of Charlie’s Saloon on the Gaslight south parcel and the rest room building on the north plot — permission McCoy temporarily revoked on behalf of his board when the county supervisors voted Sept. 17 for demolishing the Cavalcade building.

Peter Bauer of the Lake George Fund said Wednesday this permission is crucial to get the park development project going forward.

The town invested $350,000 in 2008 as their part of the purchase price of the property, to be developed into an environmental park.

The three municipalities bought into the project after negotiating near total control over a 2.5-acre festival space, including the option to keep and restore buildings there as event venues. The county and town had planned to rehabilitate Cavalcade into an events center, but the village backed

off after the adjacent Fort William Henry resort, which also has event and convention space, objected to the project.

Fort William Henry’s objection was echoed by the Lake George Steamboat Co. and the Lake George Citizen’s Group, although 50 or so other businesses signed petitions supporting it. The Lake George Chamber of Commerce had advocated the building’s redevelopment, noting that it would boost commerce and create jobs.

McCoy had presented two sets of architect’s drawings, the latest set Sept. 17, showing the building with an Adirondack Great Camp facade. He and others envisioned the building hosting drama productions, trade shows and special-interest expos — all drawing tourists to the area.

But, the county supervisors didn’t even discuss the latest plans Sept. 17, they voted to demolish the steel-frame structure, one that an engineer said was worth about $750,000 and worthy of saving.

Monroe said Sept. 24 he is looking forward to putting the contentious Gaslight issues to rest.

“It’s been a long road,” he said. “People have had strongly held beliefs, and I’m happy we’ve made progress in bringing this to a conclusion.”
