Jazz Weekend features both veteran and emerging artists

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — Annually for 27 years, the Lake George Jazz Weekend has brought innovative, top quality jazz to upstate New York.

Year after year, the festival has attracted knowledgeable jazz enthusiasts who are aware the event showcases the idiom’s finest musicians and presented their artistry in an incomparable setting.

This year, the festival’s concerts, Saturday, Sept.

18 and Sunday, Sept. 19, are preceded by a related event Friday, Sept. 17 — a special jazz cruise and party celebrating the 80th birthday of jazz performer, composer, arranger and conductor David Amram, who’s been hailed as “The Renaissance Man of American Music” by the Boston Globe.

APA chief: Let’s move past rhetoric

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com RAY BROOK — Adirondack Park Agency chairman Curt Stiles told the Essex County Board of Supervisors Sept. 7 that divisive rhetoric has split the park residents for too long and only a commitment to facts will move the region forward.

He said the “spin” imposed on APA topics recurringly by local governments and environmental groups is slowing progress on the immediate issues facing the region’s 103 communities.

“It’s gotten to a point where it’s destructive — it’s not productive dialogue,” he said. “When facts are completely distorted — look at the campaign stuff going on right now — then you get the next guy on the radio fact checking saying it’s half true or less.

That’s not politics, that’s not what this government was designed to do.”

Stiles said his aim was not to stifle debate.

Cavalcade decision deadline looming

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — The Warren County Board of Supervisors sounded yet another false alarm Friday when they postponed a decision on the fate of the former Cavalcade of Cars building.

That decision was deferred until Friday Sept. 17 after several conflicting resolutions were passed and then one was rescinded at the board’s Gaslight Ad-hoc Committee meeting Friday, due to board members’ misunderstanding of what they’d passed.

But the outcome was that one resolution was passed to allow the renovation of the building by the Town of Lake George as an events center, and another one was passed ordering its demolition.

The reason for the two opposing votes was to allow the full Board of Supervisors to make a decision between these two options this Friday when they convene for their monthly meeting.

The conflicting resolutions were passed to avoid the requirement of a two-thirds majority vote for any decision brought from the floor this Friday.

While the meeting aired familiar arguments for or against retaining the structure for a venue for events, trade shows and community functions, an alternative option re-surfaced.

Developer and hotel owner Dave Kenny said Lake George business owners had pledged considerable sums of money — as much as $750,000 — to fund the building’s renovation and operation if it were saved from destruction.

Landscaping background helps artist’s work

By Dennis Wilson denpubs@denpubs.com BOLTON — When Mark Perry’s wife gave him an art class for his birthday in October, she provided a stepping-stone to a new career. He took the class from Janine Thomas in Hartford, and he’s been painting prolifically ever since. Perry speaks fondly of his meetings with Thomas and with well-known New England artist Eric Tobin, who has been a major influence on him — they often paint together.

Now exhibiting his paintings in Chestertown’s North Country Art Gallery, Perry started his professional life working for Vermont Electric Co-op, as well as working in the landscaping business.

Several years later, Perry relocated to Bolton Landing to start Sweet Pea Farm Perennials and Art Gallery.

scenic paintings — developing essential skills that include ability to depict nature’s shapes, sizes and colors. Reviewing his work, it is evident he loves painting landscapes with as much loyalty to reproducing nature’s forms as he can muster.

A multi-talented artist, Perry is also a photographer, vocalist and guitar player. At the Hyde Park Opera House in Hyde Park, Vt. he has played the dramatic leads in Oklahoma and other musicals. Presently, however, Perry has concentrated on painting, and he said he wants to devote more time to his art.

“Painting is the easiest yet hardest thing I ever did,” he said, laughing. “It’s fun, relaxing and challenging.”

Perry said he loves Lake George, especially Sarah’s Island.

“There, I can make paintings out of every corner,” he said.

Perry’s first love is painting landscapes with oils. He loves depicting nature, he said, because

as he contemplates the natural forms, they humble him.

“Nature is awe-inspiring — and makes you feel pretty small,” he said.

When asked to characterize his work, Perry said he is an avid impressionist, depicting nature through the use of prismatic color instead of a realistic portrayal.

Perry does not sketch a landscape before he paints it as most artists do. He focuses at first on shapes and then, for him, the painting takes on a life of its own and creates itself, he said.

An avid hiker, Perry is a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Adirondack 46ers.

One of his pictures in the gallery is a depiction of an Adirondack lean-to located on the trail to Mt. Marshall in Newcomb, providing shelter for Newcomb area hikers and climbers.

This painting depicts wintertime shadows, a theme also reflected in his painting Frozen Stream, which has an impressionistic approach, Perry said.

Sewer expansion, Farmers’ Market parking discussed by town leaders

Dog licensing to become local concern

WARRENSBURG — The town board has set a public hearing for Oct. 13 to hear comments on the map and plan for an extension of the town sewer district on Library Avenue and Library Avenue Extension, Thomson Street, Third Avenue, Fourth Avenue and Raymond Lane.

A public meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at when Town Clerk Donna Combs will present the Tentative Budget for 2011.

Warrensburg Town Clerk Donna Combs discussed the state government’s complete shift of dog licensing responsibilities from the state Department of Agriculture and Markets to the local town governments. These functions include all record-keeping, plus issuing and tracking license renewals. Towns currently issuing dog licenses will fully assume these functions by Local Law by January, with the Towns receiving most all the revenue associated with this function. This column will continue to monitor and observe what decisions are made in the next few months as to costs and procedures are associated with licensing dogs.

More parking sought for Farmers’ Market

Free Methodist Church to host bishop

The Warrensburg Farmers Market held in summer and fall has become more and more popular, and it has prompted parking congestion.

Town leaders have been concerned about the safety of motorists pulling to the side of Rte. 418 near the market to park.

Also, an existing crosswalk is seldom used or observed, as patrons tend to cross anywhere near where their vehicle is parked. This practice, due to the Farmers’ Market parking lot being quite small, has prompted market and town officials to seek solutions — either establishing a crosswalk, or adding parking facilities.

While town officials had considered moving the market to a different location, Farmers’ Market officials objected on the basis that the scenic riverside location was a key factor in its popularity.

The town board unanimously agreed at their meeting

The Warrensburg Free Methodist Church invites all folks in the region to attend “Spiritual Event” services at the church with guest pastor Canadian Bishop Donald N. Bastian, a preacher, teacher and writer with vast ministerial experience. Joint School Board and Town Board meeting set Once a year, a joint meeting of the two local taxing authorities is held to discuss various topics and examine the potential of shared services. Such a meeting between the Warrensburg town Board and the Warrensburg Central school board will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Warrensburg High School.

Woman faces charges after punching mom over child custody Warrensburg Town Court report Sept. 1 — Judge Richard Nissen presiding • The case of Rachel L. Weiler, 28, Upper Sherman Avenue, Queensbury, was adjourned to Sept. 15. She is accused of second-degree harassment, for an incident at 9:23 p.m. Aug. 15 in which police said she shoved Bridget L. Giernacky at 4 Orton Dr. with both hands, causing her to fall back into a parked vehicle.

Weiler has lodged a complaint against Giernacky, 27, 4 Orton Dr., relating to that same incident. Giernacky is charged with third-degree assault. Police said after she was shoved against a vehicle, Giernacky pulled Weiler ’s hair, dragged her to the ground and proceeded to kick her in the face causing a cut above her right eye. When Weiler recovered and stood back up, according to the accusation, Giernacky punched her in the face. Since Weiler was holding her 7-yearold son in her arms, causing a risk of injury to the child, Giernacky was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Giernacky said in a statement, police said, that Weiler had come to her house, and Giernacky went outside to get the child, the son of her boyfriend Joe Weiler, and Weiler wouldn’t comply. Giernacky admitted in her statement she had pulled Weiler ’s hair and punched her after Giernacky had been shoved into a car. Giernacky’s case was adjourned to Sept. 22.

• The case of Sadie M. Wells, 29, State Route 28 was adjourned to Sept. 15. She is accused with fourth-degree criminal mischief for punching her fist through a bedroom door at about 2 a.m. Aug. 22 in an apartment at 11 Swan St., leaving a gaping hole in it. An order of protection, effective through 2010, was issued to restrain Wells from contacting the woman whose bedroom door was damaged.

Fish said in her statement to police they provided her with the money to purchase the beverages, and that one of the two boys had as many as four or five drinks.

• Also on Sept. 8, Judge Mindy Fisk issued a warrant for John M. Woods, 48, Southview Drive, Diamond Point, on a charge of third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation based on a traffic stop at 6:18 p.m. Aug. 11 on Emerson Ave., Warrensburg.

• The case of Pauline V. Buckler, 49, Ridge Avenue, Warrensburg, was adjourned to Sept. 22. She is charged with the misdemeanor of driving while intoxicated, aggravated DWI, and leaving the scene of an accident, all based on a 5:49 p.m.

Aug. 26 incident on Main Street in Warrensburg, according to court records. Police said her blood-alcohol level measured 0.28, and she was unable to count her fingers in a sobriety test. She told the arresting patrol officer she had consumed two vodkas at home.

• The cases of Philip Deloria, Joseph Giustino, Laurie Kennedy, Wayne Kennedy, Claude Kuzmiak, John Peluso, and Tyrone Tanko, were all adjourned to Sept. 22. The case of Gary LaRose was adjourned to Oct. 20.

Kindred’s license was suspended pending prosecution, but he was granted a hardship privilege due to no public transportation in Warrensburg.

• The case of Sharon L. Butler, 71, Verplanck was adjourned in contemplation of dismissal. Butler was charged with petit larceny for taking four cans of cat food and a package of chicken at 2:41 p.m. Aug. 21 from the Warrensburg Grand Union. The items were worth $10.94, police said. Butler was staying at the Warrensburg Travel Park at the time of the arrest.

• Luis Barban, 21, Poughkeepsie, pleaded guilty to the misdemeanors of second-degree criminal contempt and second-degree criminal impersonation based on a June 13, 2009 incident. Experts concerned with invasive clams, Zebra Mussels

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — Environmental advocates are ramping up efforts to draw attention to aquatic invasive species after a water steward found zebra mussels on a boat visiting Lake Placid — and the recent discovery of Asian Clams in Lake George.

An extensive search was recently launched on Lake George following the August discovery of the tiny clam on a sandy beach near the village. While divers’ surveys last week indicated the clams appeared not to be spreading past where they were first found, environmentalists said people must be vigilant to stem the incursion.

Scientists say the invasive species, also known as the “golden clam,” can cause extensive ecological and economic damage.

Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program coordinator Tyler Smith said researchers from the Darrin Fresh Water Institute of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute found the clams on the Lake Avenue Beach during a recent research project.

“They just happened across an expanse of about 2.5 acres in total of dense beds of Asian clams,” Smith said, noting the invasive species has invaded Lake Tahoe and has sparked substantial concern there among environmental experts.

Scientists note the Asian clam can self-fertilize and release up to 2,000 juvenile mollusks per day.

Smith explained the phosphorous waste excreted by the invasive species triggers large bright-green algae blooms.

Jazz From page 1 Paul Pines, a former Manhattan jazz club owner who has lined up the jazz performers for all 27 years, said this year ’s lineup of talent is one of the fullest and most diverse ever, by featuring both seasoned, acclaimed performers and those who are pushing the familiar boundaries of jazz.

“This year ’s Jazz Weekend represents a really a great celebration — a celebration of David Amram’s birthday and a celebration of youth,” he said.

“It’s a concert that really involves an incredible span of time chronologically.”

Friday night features a party at the Shoreline restaurant with various testimonials and a short presentation by filmmaker Larry Kramen who is in town to film scenes for a documentary on Amram’s life. A three-hour jazz cruise aboard The Adirondack follows at 7 p.m. and features entertainment by the David Amram Quartet.

Amram — who has worked with everyone from Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Charlie Parker to Leonard Bernstein, Bob Dylan and even Jack Kerouac — has scored the films of Splendor in the Grass and the Manchurian Candidate as well as writing 100 orchestral and chamber music works.

On Saturday Sept. 18, he takes to the stage at about 2:30 p.m. in the middle of the Jazz Weekend’s afternoon presentations, likely playing the French horn, for which he is known as a pioneer for jazz

“There is also the issue with the bio-fouling,” he said.

“They like sandy bottoms and they grow very densely. In Lake Tahoe they’ve seen 600 Asian clams per square meter — that’s a huge number.”

Experts also worry the Asian clam — like its cousin the zebra mussel — could clog up water intake pipes and other structures. Their sharp shells can also befoul swimming beaches.

It took $1.4 million to undertake clam eradication measures in Lake Tahoe. Smith noted the early discovery of clams in Lake George may be the blessing for the Lake George community, which is dependent on tourism. The lake is renowned for its clear water and ideal conditions for swimming and boating.

Smith noted crews with Aquatic Invasive Management were in Lake George removing Eurasian milfoil when the clams were discovered. Those crews switched jobs and mapped out areas infested with the Asian clam, Smith said.

“They’ve surveyed just about the entire lake and they’ve only found Asian clams in this one initial area — which is a very good thing,” he said. “We feel we’ve managed to obtain early detection, in that the species has not reproduced and taken over the entire water body. It’s impossible to remove a species once it’s reached those levels.”

Andrew Lewis of Aquatic Invasive Management said his crews are likely to employ an eradication method similar to that used on Eurasian milfoil. Called benthic matting, it essentially bars the mussels from acquiring nutrients and food.

“That’s what is being discussed right now, although nothing is finalized,” he said. “Apparently in Lake Tahoe the

The afternoon starts off at about 1 p.m. — the two days of concerts are presented in the lakeside setting of Shepard Park — with the Daniel Kelly Trio.

An award-winning keyboardist noted for incorporating sampling into his jazz performances, Kelly has worked with a broad range of artists including hip-hop star Lauryn Hill.

Saturday afternoon concludes with the jazz vocalist Roseanna Vitro & the Randy Newman project, which presents works of the talented rock composer in a new light.

Saturday at 7:30 p.m. is a special performance by trumpeter Christian Scott, 27, who’s performed with McCoy Tyner, and been featured on the cover of Downbeat. Scott’s been nominated for a Grammy award, Pines said, noting how he fuses the approach of Miles Davis with hip-hop as he re-interprets the works of contemporary artists like Radiohead.

“Scott has been labeled by some as the saviour of jazz, with his very modern, cutting edge work,” Pine said.

Opening Sunday’s roster at about 1 p.m. is Sharel Cassity Quartet. Cassity is a young Julliard graduate whose improvisation fuses blues, swing, bebop and post-bop. She has recorded an album that Downbeat magazine has rated four stars, Pines said.

“Cassity is one of the most extraordinary young talents performing today,” he said.

Just days after scientists began assessing the Asian clam threat in Lake George, a much more familiar invasive species reared its head in Lake Placid.

Smith said a water steward, Jeff Sann, discovered zebra mussels on a boat during a routine inspection at a boat launch on Lake Placid.

“He did the best he could to remove all of the mussels he could see,” Smith said. “But he just felt he wasn’t sure he got them all; it was pretty bad. In conversations with the boat owners, they said the boat had been in Saratoga Lake for 30 to 45 days. He politely asked the men to go clean their boat at a car wash, and they politely refused.”

Smith added the steward had no real legal footing on which to force the boat owners to do anything. He said the village of Lake Placid has laws barring individuals from transporting invasives, as does the state.

But enforcing those laws is difficult, Smith continued.

While there’s no conclusive proof Lake Placid is yet hosting any substantial number of zebra mussels, Smith said boat owners and the public need to remain vigilant to prevent the spread of invasive species in Adirondack Lakes.

Strategies to prevent the spread of nuisance species include boaters thoroughly cleaning the outside of their boats and draining all water from bait buckets and bilges before launching their boats; inspecting hulls, trailers and other equipment and removing plants, animals, mud and water; and drying one’s boat and trailer in the sun for five to seven days when moving them between waterways.

She is followed by the Buster Williams Quartet featuring Stefon Harris and Cindy Blackman — both acclaimed jazz performers and composers in their own right.

Buster Williams, who’s played with Herbie Hancock, and won numerous Grammys, is acclaimed as one of the greatest bass players alive, Pines said.

Vibraphonist Stefon Harris is in demand internationally, and drummer Cindy Blackman, who recorded and toured with Lenny Kravitz, has performed with jazz greats Pharaoh Sanders and Ron Carter, Pines said.

“Cindy is one of the most incredible forces of nature to watch,” he said.

The Sunday concerts end with the Samuel Torres Group. A percussionist, Torres toured with Chick Corea and many other jazz stars. Pines said Torres melds straight-ahead jazz with the Latin idiom. He said Torres’ solos on the congas have been acclaimed by the Boston Globe as “not humanly possible.”

Lake George Arts Project director John Strong hailed the 2010 lineup on musicians.

“With every band, you get a different angle on jazz,” he said. “Part of the beauty of this festival is that it represents a very diverse variety of music.”

The jazz weekend’s presentations are all free, and the Amram birthday party at Shoreline Restaurant is open to the public, with no cover charge.

•100 Years Ago – September, 1910• Three lives lost, father grieves Mrs. Edigiggia Shiavoni, 33, was fatally injured and her two-year-old son was instantly killed Sept. 21, 190, by being struck by a trolley car at the Delaware and Hudson crossing at Prospect Street, Glens Falls.

The woman had been to a nearby market and was returning home with the child walking beside her. At the tracks the engine went by and the woman, believing that there were no other cars, started across the tracks. The child was mangled beyond recognition and the mother died in Glens Falls Hospital, along with her six-month-old unborn baby.

The heartbroken father was restrained from attempting to take his own life and also that of the train conductor. A lawyer has been retained to bring an action for damages against the railroad company.

Teamster takes fatal fall Christopher Partridge, an aged man employed as a teamster at the International Paper Mill, Fort Edward, was killed Sept. 16, 1910 by falling from a heavily loaded wagon. The wheels passed over his head, crushing his skull.

Westmount Sanitarium finds a home

Clarence Bullis, 55, of Glens Falls, was killed Sept. 1, 1910 near Parker ’s Crossing, about two miles south of the village of Lake George, by being dragged beneath his wagon and crushed.

Nothing was known about the accident until the remains of the man were found Sept. 2 by the crew of the first northbound Hudson Valley Trolley car. It appears that he was going from Glens Falls to Assembly Point and somehow lost his bearings and drove on to the trolley track and his wagon slid over the roadbed. The horse was dragged with it and suffered a concussion of the spine.

The Warren County Board of Supervisors’ committee responsible for inspecting sites for the proposed county hospital went to North Creek Aug. 30, 1910 where they looked over the Somerville and Bibby properties. From there they went to Loon Lake to inspect the property of Dr. Fred E. Aldrich of Chestertown and hence to the Warren County Home in Warrensburgh where they looked over a lot owned by the county on the Bolton side of the river. The trip was made in the automobile of George F. Boyle, Chairman of the Glens Falls Committee for the Prevention of Tuberculosis.

The group also inspected the Murray property on Miller Hill, Queensbury, which contains but eight acres. They all felt, however, that the Codner farm on French Mountain, about 120 acres, is an ideal place for the erection of a tuberculosis hospital as it is situated on the state road and trolley line. It is within the 15-cent fare limit from Glens Falls, 10 cents from Lake George, 25 cents from Warrensburgh and is the center of the population of Warren County.

in the Warren County Tourism “White Paper.”

This report identified eight “super-trends that are shaping the tourism promotion business of today and which will have an important impact in the foreseeable future.”

One of these trends is related to “places and spaces.” The report says, “Increasingly, travel customers are becoming more segmented in their interests. This includes not only the things they want to see and do, but also the ecosystems and natural resources (they want to see) in the area.”

Why would anyone ever want to keep an old carnival building in the midst of an environmental masterpiece and then try to explain to our children and grandchildren why they did this? The ongoing costs, financially and aesthetically, would be devastating and would continue for decades!

The Warren County Board of Supervisors needs to vote “No” on the misguided resolution to keep the Cavalcade.

To the editor: As the Gaslight Village question approaches a decision Friday, Sept. 17, after more than two years of controversy and delay, it seems there would be little more to say. Yet among many reasons for or against such a venture, one in particular has not received much attention.

The footprint of the Cavalcade building is too large and in the wrong place. It obstructs too much of the West Brook Park festival space, already a meager 2.5 acres for annual shows that come to Lake George each year—Americade, two car shows, a tow-truck show, and others. What they need is unobstructed, accessible open space in the heart of Lake George.

The Cavalcade building is a major obstruction in nearly an acre of that space, a square projection towards the lake attached to the rectangular 1.56 acres running from the Fort William Henry line to West Brook Road. In that square, or 202 by 203 feet, the building measures approximately 100 feet (lake side by 125 feet West Brook side).

The footprint of the building, then, blocks half of the square on the lake side and 61.6 percent on the West Brook side. To be sure, there are narrow strips of land around three sides of the building and a wider strip to the south, but the footprint reduces the total festival space to less than two contiguous acres of open space.

What do these measurements mean? Quite simply, the Cavalcade building is too big and in the wrong place to make the festival space usable by the large annual shows that need open land.

This is the worst possible location for a building. A new, smaller, less expensive and more attractive pavilion should be sited elsewhere on the property when the need for it becomes clear.

Dilapidated Cavalcade mars ecological park To the editor: It is abundantly clear that those who promote the rehabilitation of the abandoned and dilapidated 1950s-era Cavalcade of Cars shell in the former Gaslight Village have absolutely no business plan to justify their position. Maybe they just have an edifice complex. No plan has been prepared, yet at every turn these folks suggest they need more time to study this or that with respect to Gaslight. This has gone on for too long!

There is, however, a more chilling reality to what the Cavalcade promoters preach. They display not one iota of strategic thinking! They seem to totally miss significant points made

They all enjoyed the family picnic, which was held Sept. 12. Many of the residents were delighted to see their friends and family members at this special gathering. Fundraiser for Gibson fundraiser Sunday at Thousand Acres

Planned as a family-oriented event, activities include horse-drawn surrey and hay rides, free photos with a pony, basketball, fishing and beach volleyball.

The local band Standing Room Only, featuring Cyndi Wade-Wood, will entertain from 1 to 4 p.m.. Tickets for adults are $25 in advance or $30 at door. Admission for attendees age 13-17 is $15, and $10 for children age 6-12, with 5 and under, free. Admission price includes a buffet barbecue lunch served from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Mountain music ruled at Fiddlers Jamboree

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com ATHOL — Crisp fall air, a robust crowd and toes tapping to infectious mountain music characterized the treasured local tradition of Thurman’s Fiddlers Jamboree held Saturday and Sunday.

The family-oriented festival, which has earned a spot in the hearts of folks from a wide region, featured a strong lineup of musicians plus workshops, games, and the rural standby known as “field pickin,’ in which musicians wander in the field and jam with other musicians.

The event, held at the Thurman town recreation field, featured mountain music on Saturday, and both gospel and rural acoustic music Sunday afternoon and well into the evening hours.

Headliners at this year ’s event were the acclaimed Sara Milonovich, John Kirk & Trish Miller, and Nelson Rock & the Circle of Willis Band.

Both children and adults enjoyed dancing to the tunes, while others sat and tapped their toes.

Also, Jimmy Davis was on hand showing curious fiddlin’ fans his huge collection of fiddles, banjos, guitars and mandolins.

Crafts were on display, including Sally Feihel’s handmade soaps, and metal art crafted by a resident of Stony Creek.

Janice Persons and her partner Leroy Salisbury sold fresh vegetables reaped from their home garden.

Members of the Thurman Emergency Medical Services conducted free blood-pressure checks.

The festival was launched with a hearty breakfast — served up by the local fire company — combined with some spontaneous fiddle jam sessions.

Saturday’s lineup included the Warren County Ramblers, a local favorite, featuring Hoddy Ovitt on guitar and banjo, Jimmy Davis on fiddle, and Johnny Mosher on lead vocals, mandolin and guitar.

They were followed by the String Dusters, once nominated regionally as “Bluegrass Band of the Year.” They played a wide range of styles, from hillbilly and primitive blues to cowboy and traditional rural American music.

At noon was the regionally acclaimed Nelson Rock & Circle of Willis band. Nelson Rock has performed at Mardi Gras in New Orleans alongside the Neville Brothers of Nashville fame. Also in the lineup were the Adirondack Fiddlers, regional favorites, followed by both the Food Stamp Band and Don Perkins & the Family Band.

Acclaimed fiddler Sara Milonovich was among the featured performers in this year’s Fiddlers Jamboree, held Saturday and Sunday Sept. 11 and 12. Sharing the stage with Milonovich was the talented duo of John Kirk and Trish Miller. was onstage late Saturday afternoon, accompanied by John Kirk and Trish Miller, who are outstanding musicians renowned for their work.

Sunday included gospel acts including Marie Monroe and Kate Seeley. A community sing-along at 5 p.m. included dozens in the crowd vocalizing on old favorites.

Event volunteer Maria Ligon said Monday the Fiddlers Jamboree was gathering a loyal following, and has been growing steadily over the past 12 years. But the tradition

runs deep in Thurman, as the Jamboree was built on the success of the Fiddlers’ Roundup which was held at Toad Hill Farm for many years.

At the Aug. 29 ceremony celebrating the completion of the Bolton town pier Dusty and Nancy Rhodes of Bolton hold a photograph of Frank Leonbruno in the 1930s, dressed up in a Civilian Conservation Corps uniform. The pier was officially rededicated to Leonbruno, a community pillar for decades, and a town supervisor. The Conservation Corps, for which Leonbruno worked for years, accomplished a variety of public works projects. Dusty and Nancy were close friends of Leonbruno.

Burdick cartoons featured in Chester Library

An acting workshop focusing on historic costumed interpretations will again be sponsored this year by the Warrensburgh Historical Society. The workshop, conducted by Filomena Riviello, will be held Saturday Sept. 25 from 9:30 to 4:30 p.m., with a one-hour break for lunch.

The cost of the workshop is $10.

Lunch, as well as pre-workshop Filomena coffee and doughnuts, will be proRiviello vided by the Society. Anyone with an interest in performing before the public is invited to participate. No prior experience is necessary. for 10 years, the Warrensburgh Historical Society has sponsored the Historic Warrensburgh Graveyard Walks and Dinner in October.

The acting workshop is intended to help performers hone their delivery techniques. Newcomers may have opportunities for historic roles in future Graveyard Walks, although no commitment is requested of participants.

Filomena Riviello has considerable experience in theater.

With an MFA from City University of New York, Riviello has taught, directed and performed for 30 years. A resident of Thurman, she currently teaches acting and directing at SUNY Adirondack and directs performances of the ACC student troupe. She has directed and performed locally with Our Town Theater Group of North Creek. her hobbies that include reading, travel, cooking and “pretending to be other people.”

Weddings Osborn and Birkholz marry QUEENSBURY — Bethany Lynn Osborn and Travis Jerold Birkholz were married July 10, 2010 at the Harrisena Community Church. Town justice Michael Muller officiated the double-ring ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of William and Beverly Osborn of Queensbury. The groom is the son of Thomas and Carol Birkholz of WarBethany Osborn rensburg. and Travis Presented in marriage by Birkholz her father, the bride was attended by her friend, Kathleen Ruhland of Glens Falls as Maid of Honor. The Bridesmaid was Jessica Birkholz, sister-in-law of the groom. Junior Bridesmaids were Kathryn Birkholz, daughter of the groom and Alyssa Birkholz, niece of the groom. Thomas Birkholz III, brother of the groom, was best man. The Groomsman was Stephen Philo, friend of the groom, Junior Groomsmen were Daniel Jacobs and David Osborn, nephews of the bride. Kiersten Birkholz, daughter of the groom, was Flower Girl and Thomas Birkholz IV, nephew of the groom, was Ring Bearer.

Readings were given by the bride and groom’s respective mothers. A reception following the ceremony was held at the Algonquin Restaurant in Bolton.

The bride is a 1995 graduate of Lake George High School and 1999 graduate of the Boston Conservatory, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She is employed by Glens Falls Dance Studio as a ballet teacher and she choreographs for local high schools and theater groups. She also works for Accel Sports as a fundraising coach.

The groom is a 1992 graduate of Saratoga Central Catholic High School, and a 1996 graduate of SUNY Potsdam, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics. He served in the US Army ROTC at Clarkson University as a commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, and he is a 1999 graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh with a Master of Science degree in Education. Birkholz is employed by South Glens Falls Central School District as a Secondary Mathematics teacher and Varsity Boys Soccer Coach. He is a Veteran of the US Army Reserve Corps of Engineers.

The couple honeymooned in Cancun, Mexico and reside in Warrensburg.

Observe the Moon with the Conservancy

St. James’ Episcopal to hold vocal concert

BOLTON LANDING — The Lake George Land Conservancy is hosting an event Sept. 18 to celebrate International Observe the Moon Night at its office on Lake Shore Drive.

The Conservancy is currently the only host site for the Moon Night in upstate New York.

International Observe the Moon Night was established for lunar scientists, educators, amateur astronomers, space enthusiasts, and the public to come together to enjoy lunar observations annually.

This free Conservancy event, set for 6 to 8 p.m., includes a presentation and observations by lunar scientist Rosemary Millham.

Participants should meet at the LGLC’s Macionis Family Center for Conservation, at 4905 Lake Shore Drive at 6 p.m. The program concludes with light refreshments. Participants may wish to bring a camera and their own binoculars or a telescope, should wear sturdy shoes and dress for cool temperatures. Registration is not required but is appreciated. Christmas Choir launches practices CHESTERTOWN — The annual Christmas Cantata will begin rehearsals for this season starting in October.

Drug ‘Take Back Day’ coming up

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com QUEENSBURY — The Warren County Sheriff’s office is participating in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back day next Saturday, and area citizens are encouraged to participate.

All are welcome to drop off unused prescription drugs, for safe disposal, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25 in the lobby of the sheriff’s office.

No questions will be asked and drop-off will be anonymous, according to a press release issued on behalf of Sheriff Bud York.

The Sheriff’s Office is located in the county Public Safety Building at 1400 State Route 9, on the north end of the county Municipal Center campus.

The sheriff’s office is particularly seeking the disposal of drugs that are subject to misuse and abuse, including painkillers and mood-enhancing or psychoactive drugs, according to the press statement.

Another reason for the Take-Back event is that left-over prescriptions can be harmful or fatal when taken in error, or not under a doctor ’s oversight. Also, they can taint public water supplies when flushed down the sink or toilet — a growing concern nationally.

Antibiotics, when released in the sewer or groundwater, are believed to spur the development of “superbugs” that are resistant to most known medicines.

The federal Drug Enforcement Administration is sponsoring the event jointly with local governments, various public health and law enforcement agencies.

GLENS FALLS — A statewide panel discussion on the abuse of prescription pain relievers will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.Sept.

Toughened-up Burgher line spurs turnaround

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — Two beefy linemen smashed up against another player who was stabbing the turf with his feet in an effort to tear through them to tackle a dummy.

Warrensburg coaches bellowed encouraging words.

“That’s the way to fight, Baker — I’ve never seen anything like this from you before,” one mentor yelled.

Head Warrensburg football coach Mike Leonbruno stood nearby Sept. 13, watching his players rip, crush, shove, and trample their way through the practice routine.

“They started out the season playing patty-cake, now it’s a different story,” he said. “We worked on this all last week — staying with our blocks, digging in hard and not stopping feet until the whistle blows.”

The repeated smash-up drills daily in practice apparently prompted last Saturday’s dramatic turnaround.

On Sept. 4, the Burghers were steamrolled 54-15 by Fort Edward, despite some good offensive breakaways and passes. They were obliterated on their ground game — It was largely a matter that the line was young and new to the game except for one returning veteran.

On Sept. 11, it was a different story. The Burghers defeated Salem 18-14 with a steely offensive line and a some efficient blocking that allowed their standout running back Lucas Nelson rack up 231 yards on 18 carries.

Nelson and his henchmen also worked their magic for the final three-plus minutes, running down the clock and securing the win for the team that’s in the past had troubles living up to its potential.

Leonbruno said that crowds are likely to see even more improvement due to the aggressive, go-for-broke commitment of this 2010 squad.

“They’re believing in themselves, and they have great attitude,” Leonbruno said, adding the team is concentrating on weightlifting, conditioning and footwork as well as the blocking drills.

“I tell them that our running backs will get the glory, but they’re out there doing the real work,” he said.

Nelson did get a good dose of glory Saturday. His accomplishments included a 90-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and he averaged almost 13 yards per run.

Quarterback Mike Curtis did his part too. He returned a kickoff for an 80yard touchdown and lit up the scoreboard with the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Up next week is the ever-tough Rensselaer at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 on the Burgher home field.

Young Burghers split games with Whitehall

WARRENSBURG — The season-opening matchups Sept. 11 for the Warrensburg Youth Football teams ended up with plenty of action — although they yielded mixed results on the scoreboard.

In the oppressive heat, the Warrensburg and Whitehall teams took turns dominating each other.

Warrensburg ccoach Gary Baker had his junior squad ready for battle, and young quarterback Evan MacDuff lead the team to a 27-6 victory over Whitehall. Tailback John Kelly had two touchdowns as he tallied 131 yards on the ground. Evan MacDuff contributed 98 yards and Peyton Olden added 30 — all following excellent blocking by fullback Scott Watson.

Brandon Bailey and Chris Wilson gave outstanding defensive performances as Thor Larson added a touchdown and Scott Watson provided the extra-point conversions in

the Junior Warrensburg win.

As for the Warrensburg senior team, prospects looked bleak even before the game started, because the entire Burgher front line was either injured or absent.

As diligent as the limited squad’s attempts were in attempting to stay in the game, Whitehall was too powerful to contain. Junior railroader Daryl Hillman scored three touchdowns and teammate William Jones accomplished one as Luke Morse and John Mosher provided the extra-point conversions. Dan St. Clair grabbed an interception and tossed a touchdown pass to Dawson Procella in Whitehall’s 33-0 romp over Warrensburg.

This Saturday, Sept. 18, Warrensburg hosts Corinth at the Warrensburg Recreation Field. The junior game starts at 10 a.m. with the seniors following soon afterwards.

Warriors dish up high drama

Without question, Lake George’s legendary drama department now has some stiff competition — from the local gridiron tribe.

The Lake George Warriors football team served up some suspenseful theater Sept. 9 under the lights in their back-from-the-dead 14-13 turnaround victory versus Corinth.

Down 13-0 approaching halftime, the Warriors forced some turnovers, created opportunities and turned the game on its head.

Football coach Jeff Bennett said he appreciated his team’s never-say-die attitude.

“Our guys hung tough,” he said. “The team’s got a lot of fight, battling back like they did.”

The winning touchdown had its own minidrama. Bennett knew his quarterback Willy Blunt had hurt his foot, and Bennett was ready to sideline him, the coach said.

But Blunt convinced Bennett to let him stay in the game — and the next play, Blunt took off for a 25-yard gain, Bennett said.

“Two plays after his 25-yard run, Blunt punched it in for the winning touchdown,” Bennett said. “It’s great when kids pull through under pressure.”

After the touchdown, the Warriors held off Corinth, which had two minutes left to answer, and they did with a 33-yard gain, but the Warrior defenders held tough, stopping the drive and securing the win.

The drama had a lot of heroes for a Broadway epic. There was Peter Fisher who recovered a Corinth fumble at the Tomahawks’ 34 to launch the game-winning drive.

Then there was Marty Zivica, who stole the spotlight with 76 rushing yards including a second-quarter touchdown.

But Bennett identified another tour de force, which he said effectively secured the win: McCabe’s block of Corinth’s extra-point kick attempt in the second quarter, the Tomahawk’s last score.

“It was a huge play,” Bennett said with a smile, noting that McCabe had also gave the gridiron drama a crowd-thrilling finale to the game by sacking the Corinth quarterback in the last play of their concluding comeback attempt.

Other elements of success was the performance of the secondary — Zivica and Hunter Hamilton shadowing the Corinth receivers and knocking down passes to suppress the Corinth passing game, as well as providing support for run defense.

Although the Warrior offense basked in the spotlight with the 182 yards on the ground and 15 first downs — about double the Tomahawks, they didn’t necessarily dominate the show.

There was the alert, aggressive defense, who shut down Corinth’s pass plays, as well as creating opportunities by recovering fumbles — one each for Nate Fidd, Jack Clark and Matt McGowan.

Bennett said he appreciated his team’s hard work on Thursday on the gridiron stage.

“Games like this are what makes high school football so much fun,” he said.

Volleyball action Lake George 3, Schuylerville 0 LAKE GEORGE — The Lake George varsity volleyball team left its 2010 season perfect Sept. 13 after defeating Schuylerville in a 30 shutout.

In the effort, Erin Blunt tallied five kills and seven digs as Lake George, 2-0 overall, demonstrated their power in the series, recording 25-13, 25-22, and 25-17.

Teammate Amanda Chambers showed her talent behind the baseline by tallying 14 service points and two aces.

Warrior Kelly Flaherty showed her versatility with four kills, 10 service points and two aces. Katy Munzenmaier contributed five service points and four aces; and Setter Courtney Casey kept the ball placed well for teammates, with her eight assists for the Warriors.

Coach Cathy Stanilka said her players were working hard to build skills and teamwork with an eye on claiming the Adirondack League championship, following in the footsteps of 2009 predecessors. Stanilka, who has guided 12 of her volleyball teams since 1990 to the state championship tournament, said prospects this year look good.

“We’re young, we have new players, and we’re trying to see what gels,” she said. “But we’re coming together as a team.”

LAKE GEORGE — The Lake George girls soccer team was edged out Sept. 10 by the farlarger Schenectady, which scored two goals early in the second half and fought off Lake George’s comeback efforts to win.

Lake George’s aggressive offense, recording six shots, kept Schenectady’s goalie busy — she recorded six saves.

Lake George 0, Stillwater 0 STILLWATER — Battling through two overtime periods, Lake George and Stillwater played to a scoreless tie Sept. 8 under the lights in the non-league opening for both girls soccer teams teams.

WARRENSBURG — The experienced 2010 Burgher soccer team showed their potential Sept. 13 as they played aggressive, competitive ball against Corinth, which edged them out in a 3-1 Adirondack League win.

Each team’s offense moved the ball well.

Devan Kilmartin tallied five saves for Corinth and Aaron Seeley was close behind with eight for Warrensburg.

HARTFORD — A late-game offensive attack by Hartford allowed the Tanagers to edge out the storied Bolton soccer team with a 1-0 win. Hartford’s Zack Tripp kicked the one goal of the game.

Bolton’s Mitchell Jordon tallied three saves in the defensive battle, as did his Hartford counterpart.

Burghers battle in tourney WARRENSBURG — The Burgher coaches demonstrated that they value skill development over glory this season, as they scheduled tough competitors instead of ringers in their annual field hockey tournament — and the result was they came in last.

Dani DeGregory and Emilee Boddery each retallied three goals apiece as the Greenwich field hockey team, beat South High, 7-0, in the championship game of the Warrensburg Invitational Sept. 11. The Witches are now 3-0.

In Saturday’s consolation game, Corinth defeated Warrensburg 2-0. On Sept. 10, South Glens Falls beat the Burghers 2-0. Warrensburg outshot South High, 8-5, and Casey Duell made three saves in the effort.

Warrensburg’s field hockey team, despite a few losses, looks good for a young squad, coach Mary Ann Bump said.

“Every time we get on the field we get better,” she said. “We’re constantly making progress.”

She said the players were looking forward to the season and upholding Warrensburg’s tradition of championship field hockey campaigns.

“We’re beginning to establish a forward line, which at this point looks solid,” she said.

“Everybody is working hard.”

HARTFORD — The Warriors volleyball team launched their 2010 Adirondack League season in traditional style, defeating Hartford 3-1 Sept. 10.

Lake George mustered their newly-honed skills to hold the Tanagers back, with game scores of 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, and 25-18.

Courtney Casey showed good teamwork as she accomplished 15 assists and 12 points.

Kelly Flaherty demonstrated good placement and timing with her nine kills and a block, Amanda Chambers had six kills and five points and Chelsea Sipowicz showed her will-to-win with 25 digs.

WARRENSBURG — The Burgher volleyball team showed some solid skills and considerable improvement over recent years as they stayed alive in a matchup against Hadley-Luzerne, which the Eagles won 2514, 25-21 and 25-7.

Hadley-Luzerne’s Ashleigh Bourdeau had 12 aces and seven kills in the series.

Cheyenne Palmateer led the Burghers with five aces and five digs. Katie Riddle recorded one ace, three assists and one dig and Autumn Smith tallied three digs.

CHESTERTOWN — The Cougar field hockey team showed they can tackle a far-larger school and hang tough, as they stayed competitive in a 3-1 loss Sept. 10 to Hudson Falls in non-league play.

North Warren was on top in offensive action, taking 10 shots to Hudson Falls’ 3, but the Tigers’ goalie turned all but one away to secure the win.

Schuylerville 2, Warrensburg 1 WARRENSBURG — The Warrensburg field hockey team battled deep into overtime, but lost to Schuylerville 2-1 as Heather Quirk scored in a non-league field hockey game Sept. 8.

With the win, Schuylerville moved to 3-0 overall.

CHESTERTOWN — The Cougar field hockey team was overpowered Sept. 8 by a talented, deep Greenwich squad. North Warren goalie Morgan Tennyson made 13 saves for the Cougars in the contest.

Salem 2, Lake George 0 LAKE GEORGE — Magill Woodruff and Madison Keys scored goals for Salem, securing a victory over Lake George in a season-opening field hockey contest Sept. 8.

LAKE GEORGE — The Lake George boys soccer team launched an offensive attack scoring three goals, and Warrior goalie Ryan Moll showed his athleticism and quick reflexes in diving and leaping for 12 saves, as Lake George defeated Elizabethtown 3-1 Sept. 13 in a non-league victory.

Erik Jones set the tone for Lake George, scoring first early into the game, and teammate Mason Vreugde scored two follow-up goals soon afterwards.

With the win, Lake George improved to 11 overall

Chazy 6, Bolton 0 CHAZY — The Bolton girls soccer team was defeated in a formidable scoring onslaught by Chazy Sept. 11 in a non-league matchup.

Chazy showed their depth as six players scored in the game, four of the successful shots in the first half. Goalie Rosie Denne had her work cut out for her, and she tallied 12 saves in the loss.

HARTFORD — Lake George’s legendary boys soccer program endured an unwelcome dousing of ice water Sept. 9 as they were downed by an aggressive Hartford team 2-0.

Chris Cornell and Jon Louie scored the two goals for the Tanagers in the second half.

Autumn’s approach T

he arrival of cool, damp weather has provided a welcome change of pace for area sportsmen. In keeping with tradition, autumn is expected to be cold and blustery, but for too many years, we’ve been enjoying an extended summer.

We’ve gotten so used to it, that we’ve become spoiled.

When a spectacular Indian Summer day arrives, we tend to take it in stride. A warm autumn day is simply no longer a cause for celebration that it once was.

Late season fishing opportunities have started to pick up, with trout again active on the ponds while bass have been busy on the lakes.

In a few weeks, anglers will find landlocked salmon returning to Lake Champlain’s tributaries, as they move in to spawn. I expect it will be a productive fall run, in terms of both quantity and quality as a result of the introduction of alewives in the Big Lake.

The timeframe signals a gradual period of seasonal transitions, as hunter and anglers mix and match their pursuits according to the weather, the species and the regulations.

It is also a key period of indecision, as a host of opportunities makes it increasingly difficult to decide on whether to pursue fish, fowl or game.

Sept. 18 is the opener for early bear season in the northern zone. Two days later, the ruffed grouse season begins Sept. 20. Pheasant season kicks in with the youth weekend set for Sept. 25-6. The regular season opener is Oct. 1.

Throw into the mix the close of frog season on Sept. 30 and the beginning of archery season on Sept. 27, for hunters with last year ’s tag, and it appears that the high holy days of autumn have finally arrived for sportsmen and women.

Within a few weeks, members of the buffalo plaid or camo clad crew will become the primary human inhabitants of the forest as tourists leave and kids return to school to begin their regular routines of life.

The smell of woodsmoke will again scent the forest air, as a familiar musty, pungency returns to the woods. The daylight hours will grow shorter, the weather will get cooler, the breeze stronger and as fallen leaves begin to cover the trails, the season will be in full swing.

I spoke with Ed Reed, a wildlife biologist with Region 5 DEC in Ray Brook, about prospects for the early season and he explained, “It’s been a really good year for black cherries, and it appears it will be for acorns and beechnuts, although we’ll have to wait and see if the beechnuts actually produce.”

“There is a good natural food supply and I’d say that the Adirondack bear population is pretty stable. However, it has been a light year for nuisance complaints, which usually indicates a slow early season.”

It stands to reason that with readily abundant natural

food the animals won’t have to venture far in search of a meal. Less travel means less exposure and fewer opportunities for hunters Hunters should expect to find thick woods in full foliage on opening weekend, with seasonal temperatures ranging in the 60’s.

The American Sportsman — An endangered species?

Currently, the majority of Americans reside in the cities, we have gradually become an urban nation. So has the rest of the world, they have gravitated to the cities. For the first time in history, the majority of the earth’s human population now lives in urban areas.

As a result of this process, a majority of the nation’s population has become detached from the land. We have lost our rural roots. In many cases, our children lack for actual experience in the wild, they have become estranged from the outdoors.

This process has proven contrary to our instincts, our genetic resolve. Human beings long for the outdoors! It has been established that we have a physical and psychological need to spend time in natural surroundings. For over 10,000 years, our species lived on the open Savanna, were we evolved into the world’s apex predator.

The process of the ongoing, national “denaturalization” has been well established. It was documented in Richard Louv’s bestseller, Last Child in the Woods.

This gradual erosion of our national outdoor ethic was eventually ascribed in medical terminology. It has been called, “nature deficit disorder.”

In Michigan, a pediatric clinic now provides a prescription to combat childhood obesity. The prescribed treatment requires parents to get their children to spend more time outdoors. The ‘script,’ which can be filled at a local nature center, provides documentation of the frequency and duration of the children’s visits.

Louv claims that he had to ascribe a medical term to the affliction in order to get anybody to pay attention. Fortunately, his efforts have worked! Today the Child & Nature Network is a viable national and international organization that has spawned a resurgence of interest in outdoor play.

Despite numerous claims that there has been a serious downturn in traditional outdoor sports, hunting currently remains almost as popular as it was in the 1950’s. In fact, a

recent national survey found that 87 percent of all American adults believe that hunting and shooting sports are as acceptable as golf or tennis.

An estimated 7-9 percent of the US population regularly participates in hunting and currently, women represent the fastest growing segment of this group.

Additionally, more than 50 percent of survey participants under 29 years of age claimed they would be receptive to hunt if a friend invited them. This is a very encouraging development in terms of hunter recruitment efforts. The sport would benefit from increased participation, and so will the youth.

In contrast, research indicates that fewer than 3 percent of American adults actually adhere to an animal rights philosophy.

While it is difficult to make the necessary time commitment to marathon training under the best of circumstances, it is even more mentally and physically taxing to maintain that pledge when faced with erratic hours, field duty and military uncertainties.

To in some small way express the pride we feel at the sacrifices these men and women continue to make on our behalf, Adirondack Marathon Distance Festival officials have

instituted a policy to waive the fee for the first 50 active duty military personnel that register ($80 per runner). Additionally, every effort is being made to locate low-cost local housing for military entrants and their families.

Also taking up the torch are seven West Point cadets who are eager to challenge other academies to join the competition. Stay tuned to see what other military institutions respond to the call to go the distance.

The public is urged to turn out and show support for these men and women and the over 1,000 other runners, by volunteering or cheering for them as they undertake their 26.2 mile journey.

Others, including leading business owners, Chamber of Commerce leaders, local tourism officials, Lake George town council members and leaders of about half the upcounty towns, have contended the building is a viable venue for trade shows and events as well as weddings and community functions. The rehabilitated building would boost the local economy, they have said.

Business leaders at Friday’s meeting continued to voice support of saving the building, which features a steel superstructure and a solid concrete pad, which would cost far more at a later date to replace. They’ve also contended that while renovation is now legally viable, changing environmental statutes might block new construction on the site.

He pointed specifically to local government’s adoption of the recent Adirondack Park Regional Assessment Project as a tool to lobby against further state land acquisition.

Stiles also noted the fervor roused among green groups after the recent agency adoption of new snowmobile trail siting guidelines.

“I think the park agency has matured more over the last 10 or 15 years than people give it credit for — the staff is professional — they don’t have a bias other than following the law,” he said. “I think at times, people want things done fast. The process of land use by design, even in a town running its own process, is not quick.”

Local officials regularly criticize that agency staff is more receptive to the wants of environmental groups than the needs of the communities.

APA officials have been seeking to overhaul the agency’s founding act. But three bills have stalled after the region’s state legislators have voiced concern over some of the provisions.

Only 19 towns in the park have adopted master plans, which would cede jurisdiction for most mid-level projects from the agency to the towns.

But Stiles noted it’s often politically easier for local officials to have a state whipping boy than accepting the routine of the controversial task of zoning regulation and enforcement.

“Some town supervisors say they don’t want it. They tell me very directly that they would rather be able to blame the park agency,” he said. “I respect that and that may be fine for some small towns.”

For about a year, the park agency has included the presentation of a regional town supervisor in its monthly agenda. Lake George town supervisor Frank McCoy made a presentation at the agency’s August meeting.

In his talk, McCoy urged the APA to allow town governments more autonomy over land use issues — citing regulatory delays, and local residents’ complaints the agency took on beyond its jurisdiction, delayed projects unnecessarily, and was disconnected from local residents’ concerns.

Agency officials have contended such presentations like McCoy’s were part of an outreach essential in establishing good communication between the state and local governments.

Moriah supervisor Tom Scozzafava recently made one of these APA community spotlight presentations.

Although Scozzafava has said he is skeptical about the APA — even challenging its existence — he said the agency is far more accessible than it has been in the past.

“I can see a transition where they are much more userfriendly now,” he said. “They aren’t just hearing us, they’re listening. I think that’s a huge step forward.”
