QUEENSBURY — The Primary election to be held throughout Warren County Tuesday Sept. 14 will have no local candidates vying for votes, although in November, plenty of town races will be on the ballot.

Statewide and U.S. Congressional races, however will be presented to voters to choose various party candidates.

For the Democrats, voters will be choosing between five candidates for state Attorney General: Richard L. Brodsky, Eric T. Schneiderman, Sean Coffey, Eric R. Dinallo, and Kathleen M. Rice; plus two candidates for U.S. Senator, unexpired term. U.S. Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand will be running for election to this Senate post, to which she was appointed when Hillary Clinton was named U.S. Secretary of State. Gillibrand is challenged by Gail Goode in this upcoming Primary election.

ALBANY — A state Supreme Court judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Adirondack Council that aimed to overturn a set of Adirondack snowmobile trail siting and maintenance guidelines adopted recently by the Adirondack Park Agency and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The Adirondack Council had argued that the guidelines would allow locating snowmobile trails up to two miles from any highway into the heart of state Forest Preserve lands — which would open up virtually all land in the Adirondacks to trail development. The green group contended this new policy was in direct violation of the State Land Master Plan and a subsequent environmental review.

The suit also questioned the new standards for grooming, tree cutting, grading, rock removal and other trail maintenance tasks on state lands.

The Council had asked the court to nullify the guidelines, describing them as "unlawful, arbitrary,

Robust response to Chester art gallery prompts expanded exhibits

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN — The North Country Arts Center ’s new gallery on Main St. has expanded its plans due to a remarkable public response that has surpassed expectations, Gallery organizer Fred Holman told the membership of the North Warren Chamber of Commerce at a social event held Sept. 1.

Holman told the Chamber gathering that the number of people both visiting the gallery and purchasing the artwork this summer has been substantial, and the attendance at the Aug. 28 Family art Day was robust.

We’ve had excellent public response — it’s been exciting,” Holman said Monday, noting that artists have spread the word about the new venue to show their art, and more and more people are stopping in to see the growing collection. “It has been real positive for everybody.”

While the gallery was launched with 25 artists exhibiting, a total of 46 were showing their work by the time the first exhibit was taken down last week, he said.

Virtually all the gallery’s available exhibit space was filled, he said.

Another exhibit will be going up soon showing a bumper crop of work from local artists, Arts Center President Linda Buerkley said Monday. Both this fall exhibit, and a holiday exhibit to follow, will feature more jewelry, pottery, and fabrics to boost the public’s holiday shopping opportunities, she said.

The seven-week exhibit, the debut effort for the Art in Chestertown gallery, resulted in a large number of pieces being sold, she said.

“The gallery has energized the art community,” she said.

“Apparently the Arts Center has ignited a flame up north.”

Falls-based North Country Arts Center has made arrangements to keep the Chestertown gallery open through the beginning of January, Buerkley said.

The gallery’s fall show will open on Thursday Sept.16, with an artists reception set for 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept 17. The show runs through Oct. 30. The holiday show is set to open Nov. 11 and run through January 8.

through Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is located in the former Harness Shop at 6378 state Rte. 9.

The gallery is now inviting artists to submit up to three hanging works or large sculptural pieces and up to ten 10 smaller table items for potential exhibit. The Family Art Day that the gallery held Aug. 28 demonstrated the enthusiastic response of the community, Holman said. As many as 75 or more visited the gallery, and while adults perused the exhibition, children engaged in face painting, henna body art and sketched their favorite artworks on exhibit. In the daytime hours, the public watched six Plein Air artists outside painting streetscapes or landscapes, and during the evening, local residents and visitors mingled with the exhibiting artists at a gallery reception, Holman said.

“It was a super turnout,” he said. “We were active all day.”

Holman said and others involved with the Art in Chestertown gallery were excited to be boosting activity downtown, which has until recently undergone a noted decline in visitors and pedestrian traffic.

“We’re excited to be working with the community to expand the role art has in the revitalization of Chestertown,” he said.

Decision on Cavalcade expected Friday

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — After a year of controversy, several public hearings and at times angry confrontations, the fate of the former Cavalcade of Cars building on the West Brook environmental park plot is likely to be decided Friday.

Although taxpayers have heard this before, county Supervisors pledged at a meeting Friday that they were going to adhere to their selfimposed deadline to decide the building’s future, because if a decision isn’t made within several weeks, grant money may not be available for its demolition.

Proponents of demolition have argued that the Cavalcade building is obsolete and interferes with the purpose of the park, which is envisioned to host walkways, outdoor festivals while purifying stormwater through a series of wetlands. They also have contended that reconstruction and maintenance costs, shouldered by local taxpayers, would not be recovered by rental fees or boosted sales tax receipts.

Others, including leading business owners, Chamber of Commerce leaders, local tourism officials, Lake George town council members and leaders of about half the upcounty towns, have contended the building is a viable venue for trade shows and events as well as weddings and community

functions. The rehabilitated building would boost the local economy, they have said.

Lake George Supervisor Frank McCoy has proposed upgrading the building with a new Adirondack-themed facade, and he’s cited cost quotes of less than $300,000.

But a county tourism study report released Friday determined that at least $1 million would have to be spent to make Cavalcade a viable, attractive venue.

The report, prepared by ConsultEcon of Massachusetts, cited that Cavalcade was obsolete and unusable without substantial reconstruction. The report added that rebuilding would cost about as much as new construction.

Others have consistently disputed such figures, saying they’re inflated. McCoy has said that the town of Lake George — or perhaps private interests — would fund the upgrades, as the county has gone on record it wont spend any money on the building’s renovation.

Business leaders at Friday’s meeting continued to support saving the building, which features a steel superstructure and a solid concrete pad, which would cost far more at a later date to replace. They’ve also contended that while renovation is now legally viable, changing environmental statutes might block new construction on the site.

The business leaders talked about collectively raising money to pay for its

rehabilitation if a legal leasing arrangement could be worked out with the town, the county and the village who are joint tenants on the property and own the land along with environmental groups.

When Bolton Supervisor Ron Conover suggested delaying a vote so the county could weigh the new proposals of private investments, tempers flared as Gaslight Ad-Hoc Committee chairman Bill Kenny injected a sarcastic remark and Horicon Supervisor Ralph Bentley told Kenny he was out of order — and Kenny then responded he didn’t think it was his his job to make such a determination.

Talk circulated about whether the town might sue the county and village to block demolition, but McCoy has maintained his board would not support such an option.

But with a grant-funding deadline approaching, and demolition of other structures at the site to begin in about three weeks, the supervisors decided to make a final decision on Friday at a meeting that begins at 9:30 a.m. Their decision will be subject to approval of the full Board of Supervisors Sept. 17.

He first volunteered for the garden and landscaping work at North Warren when he was hired as a custodian six years ago, and continued his attentive work for the past three years as groundskeeper, Superintendent of Schools Joe Murphy said.

Monday, Murphy praised Joyce’s skills in garden design and maintenance.

“The balance of textures and the color schemes are incredible,” Murphy said. “It’s so impressive, people come here to get their picture taken with the gardens as a background.”

Whether it’s a lush blanket of marigolds surrounding the school’s flagpole, hanging baskets of vibrant violet Scaviola flowers, lush P.J.M. Rhododendron bushes bursting with blooms, beds of Astilbe perennials, exuberant plantings of Stella Dora day lilies, or the blazing hue of Burning Bush plantings, there’s always something ablaze in color surrounding the school.

Murphy and others said Joyce invests countless hours nurturing the plantings — watering and fertilizing the thousands of plants, picking off dead flowers to boost growth, establishing new species, transplanting and replacing plants to optimize the garden’s appearance.

Joyce said this week that he simply enjoys his work.

“It’s nothing special, I just work at it,” Joyce said. “If you like what you’re doing, it’s easy. ” Murphy said that Joyce serves as an inspiration to students — not only the beauty he has created, but his hard work and love for his job.

“Joyce is an outstanding role model for our kids,” Murphy said. “And they truly appreciate his work.”

Before being hired by North Warren, Joyce was employed for about 14 years by Jim Girard Landscaping of Queensbury Beforehand, he’d worked as a logger for 15 years.

Joyce, a Brant Lake resident, deferred credit for the gardens that some say are the most attractive of all schools in the region.

“The school administration feels it’s important for the grounds to look nice, and the taxpayers appreciate it,” he said.

Blais added that he expects Wagenfest to grow in upcoming years and move to the county festival space in the West Brook environmental park. Almost 200 cars and owners’ families attended the Vermont event.

“The show organizers attended the past Adirondack Nationals Car Show and they see Lake George as a perfect fit for this classic show,” Blais said.

“This is a perfect weekend to extend our season,” he continued, adding that he expects large crowds.

Stieglitz, O’Keeffe’s local lives subject of talk LAKE GEORGE — The Warren County Historical Society will soon be presenting a program on two of America’s premier artists and their life and work together in Lake George.

"Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz in Lake George,"a onehour free slide program will be presented at 7 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 15 in the community room of the Lake George Village firehouse.

Historian and author Teri Gay will start her presentation with background information about the allure of the Lake George re-

gion to artists; then focus on Alfred and his family's connection to the lake, his stature in the art and photography world, and his meeting of O’Keeffe. This will be followed by O’Keeffe's background, their love affair and marriage, and their artistic partnership and work over a 40-year period in Lake George. Teri Gay will also include some newly-released love letters from O’Keeffe to Stieglitz that depict the intense and stormy love that they shared throughout their years together, and will juxtapose some of his photographs of Lake George with

her paintings of the same scenes.

Every year, the Chamber pays thousands of dollars for the garbage to be removed and disposed of, and for the town to be cleaned. Folks notice that the annual cleanup effort is enormous, considering the many tons of trash left behind by 80,000 visitors or more. People note that on Monday morning after the weekend, the town looks as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

You may do your part in the effort. If you have excess trash like beds ar appliances, bring them to the town transfer station. If you have a vendor on your property that has excess cooking oil, contact the chamber prior to Friday and the agency will contact a local business that can use the oil ecologically — for biofuel.

This year the chamber has arranged for entertainment at the Floyd Bennett Memorial Bandstand. If you have a talent and would like to perform, contact Sue at the Chamber of Commerce 623-2161. No one will be paid for their performance, but entertainers are welcome to sell their CDs or books, or put a collection receptacle out for donations.

Free parking is available at the county fairgrounds on Schroon River Rd. as well as the high school and shuttle service is provided. If anyone in town is offering parking at their property let the chamber know, as they always hear from folks who want to park in town and they can be advised where you are.

Memorial service to honor heroes, victims of Sept. 11 attacks

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — The region’s premier public memorial service for those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks is scheduled to be held Saturday at 7 p.m.

More than 200 people are expected to attend the emotion-filled public event, set for the Floyd Bennett Memorial Bandstand in the center of town.

Held annually on Sept. 11 since the year after the attacks, the candlelight service includes a crowd of people surrounding the bandstand, their faces illuminated with candlelight.

Prayers, a solemn bell-ringing, wreath-laying, and memorial speeches are included in the ceremony. Solemn musical selections will likely be offered by the Warrensburg High School Band. Also, the local American Legion post has annually passed out American flags for the public to display their patriotism during the ceremony.

All area emergency responders have been invited to participate. Thurman firefighters and emergency squad members are expected to be among those on hand Friday.

The ceremony is sponsored by the Warrensburg Volunteer Fire Co. in conjunction with the Warrensburg Emergency Medical Services.

Observe the Moon with the Conservancy BOLTON LANDING — The Lake George Land Conservancy is hosting an event Sept. 18 to celebrate International Observe the Moon Night at its office on Lake Shore Drive.

The Conservancy is currently the only host site for the Moon Night in upstate New York.

International Observe the Moon Night was established for lunar scientists, educators, amateur astronomers, space enthusiasts, and the public to come together to enjoy lunar observations annually.

This free Conservancy event, set for 6 to 8 p.m., includes a presentation and observations by lunar scientist Rosemary Millham.

Participants should meet at the LGLC’s Macionis Family Center for Conservation, at 4905 Lake Shore Drive at 6 p.m. The program concludes with light refreshments. Participants may wish to bring a camera and their own binoculars or a telescope, should wear sturdy shoes and dress for cool temperatures. Registration is not required but is appreciated.

Warrensburg Town Court report Aug. 25 — Judge Mindy Fisk presiding • Brian D. Cook, 26, of 5 Spruce Lane, Warrensburg, was granted one-year Adjournment in Contemplation of Dismissal on a charge of second-degree Harassment.

He was accused of throwing a can of “Nos” energy drink at a woman shortly after noon Aug. 8 with the attempt to cause physical injury, police said.

• The case of John M. Peluso, II, 29, was adjourned to Sept. 8. Peluso faces Felony charges of Menacing a Police Officer and thirddegree Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Police apprehended him at about midnight Aug. 18 at his parents house on Henry St., according to court documents. Police said Peluso threatened a police officer with a knife.

Police said that while being restrained by his father, the younger Peluso pulled away from him and raised a folding knife at a patrolman and threatened him in an obscenity-laced outburst.

Peluso continued to hold the knife until disarmed by his father, police said, prompting fear in the officer of physical injury. Peluso also faces a Misdemeanor charge of Resisting Arrest. Police said Peluso pulled his arms away, and when restrained on the ground, pushed his body up against the officer.

Bail was recommended by the District Attorney’s Office to be $50,000, but bail was set for $5,000, and Peluso was sent to Warren County Jail for lack of bail, which was later reduced to $1,000, according to court records.

• The case of John M. Woods, 48, of Southview Dr. Diamond Point was adjourned to Sept. 8. He is accused of third-degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation based on an incident Aug. 11 in which two probation officers spotted Woods exiting his vehicle at 6:18 p.m.

• The case of Jeremy L. Barber, 17, of Alden Ave, Warrensburg was adjourned to Sept. 22. He faces a Misdemeanor charge of Reckless Driving, based on an incident at 10:20 p.m. Aug. 16

on Harrington Hill Rd. Police said he was driving erratically and crashed into a horse trailer. He told police that people were chasing hin to beat him up.

• The case of Kathleen L. Carter, 62, of Diamond Point Rd., was adjourned to Sept.

1. She is accused of the Misdemeanor of Driving While Intoxicated in an incident at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11 which involved a car crash on Pasco Avenue, Warrensburg. She also faces the charge of driving with the blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent or more, Unlicensed Operator and Failure to Yield Right-of Way at a stop sign, an action which resulted in a car crash, according to a police report. Her blood-alcohol level measured 0.14 percent, police said.

• A judgement for $2,226 was granted to Paul Girard for non-payment of rent against Robin Baker, of 12 Second Ave., Warrensburg.

• Abraham Sanders, 21, of Flushing N.Y., pled Guilty to Disobeying a Traffic Device in a plea bargain, settling charges for speeding 90 miles per hour in a 65 m.p.h. speed zone on the northbound I-87 at 11:42 a.m. May 30. He was caught by radar.

Sanders paid $185 in fines and surcharges to the reduced charges.

• Alvin Millington of Johnsburg, pled Guilty to the violation of Unlicensed Operator in a plea bargain.

He faces a fine and surcharge totaling $125.

• Carl Venosa, 25, of Chestertown pled Guilty to third-degree Aggravated Unlicensed operation based on a June 17 traffic stop. He faces a fine and surcharge totaling $285.

The cases of Fahri Clak, Philip Deloria, Joe Giustino, Raymond Hernandez, Laurie Kennedy, Wayne Kennedy, Gary LaRose, and Tyrone Tanko were adjourned.

Aug. 18 — Judge Richard Nissen presiding • The case of Tyler S. Baker, 17, 147 River St. was adjourned to Sept. 1. He is

charged with Trespass — police said that at 6:50 p.m.

July 30, he entered the property of Bonnie Monroe at 211 River St. after being told not to.

• The case of Francesco Carrillo, 27, of Beacon, NY, was adjourned. He is charged with DWAI, and Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle, based on an incident at 6:20 p.m. Aug 8, when he was stopped on Northway after illegally driving on the roadway’s shoulder. Police measured his blood-alcohol level at 0.07.

• Warren Devoe, 23, Library Ave., pled Guilty to Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Police had apprehended him on Library Ave. possessing a Baggie of the substance. Devoe was assessed a fine and surcharge totaling $225.

• The case of Ernest Donable, 25, of Elmont NY, was adjourned to Sept. 1. He was charged with third-degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, July 14 after he was stopped on the Northway near Exit 24. Police said he was speeding 70 miles per hour in a work zone that had a limit of 50 m.p.h. posted.

• The case of Kelly J. Rafferty, 37, of 44 Elm St., Warrensburg, was adjourned to Sept. 1. She faces a Felony charge of Criminal Mischief due to causing more than $1,500 worth of damage to the vehicle belonging to her husband, Jonathan Rafferty, police said. Authorities said that at 10:20 a.m. on Aug. 1, she took a sharp item and made multiple deep scratches to the driver ’s side of the vehicle, a 2008 Toyota Tundra pickup. She is also charged with second-degree Harassment, a Violation, for pushing her husband in the chest with both hands that day at their residence.

• A judgement of $2,045 was granted against Todd Reed, 255 River St., Warrensburg, to force him to repay a personal loan from Philip J. Viger of Gansevoort. According to the court judgement, Reed had obtained the loan of $2,030 for a deposit on vehicle, car insurance and car registration, attorney’s fees and a cash advance.

• Matthew R. Walters, 27, of Beswick Drive, Warrens-

burg, pled Guilty to a charge of Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, a Violation, based on an incident at 2:56 a.m. Aug. 1 on Library Ave. when he possessed a Baggie of the substance. Walters was assessed a fine and surcharge totaling $225.

• Claudette Masonius, 38, was resentenced to 8 days in jail after failing to report for serving time on weekends at the Warren County jail.

• The cases of David Amiano, Luis Barban, Lynn Bennett, Joe Giustino, Keith Hayes, Michael Monroe, Jennifer Murphy, Maria Natale, Brittany Scroggy, Jacob Steves and Eric VanNess, were all adjourned to Sept. 1.

•100 Years Ago – September, 1910• Lake George Club founder falls from rafters Charles S. Peabody was severely injured the morning of Sept. 5, 1910, by falling from the rafters at the Lake George Club, where he was assisting in arranging decorations. He fell about 25 feet to the hardwood floor, landing on his head In his descent, he struck the gallery railing which broke the full force of his fall, which doctors agree would have under other conditions have resulted in his death. He was picked up unconscious and taken to the Hotel Marion.

(Note: Charles Samuel Peabody, the son of Lake George millionaire Royal C. Peabody, was the architect and a Founder-Member of the famed Lake George Club on the lakeshore near Diamond Point. His favorite uncle, George Foster Peabody, always called him “Carlos.”

Charles also designed his father ’s mansion, “Wikiosco.” or “home of beautiful waters,“ on Millionaires’ Row, which many years later was owned by Charles R. Wood and was eventually renamed as “Blenheim on the Lake.”)

Local fair presents novel airship The Pottersville Fair, set to commence on Sept. 20, 1910, will present the great Aeroplane flight, the first airship to ever be seen in this part of the country. A big crowd is expected every day to see this special attraction.

Mail-order bride murdered Two years ago, G. Frank Hewey, a wealthy farmer near Weatherfield, Vt., married a woman who came into these parts as a result of a matrimonial advertisement he placed in a western publication. On Aug. 23, 1910 he killed her and the horse she drove and than ended his own life.

Mrs. Hewey was found dead sitting upright in her carriage with a bullet through her heart on Branch Rd. in Perkinsville in a lonely section of the town. A party of automobilists had been trying for some time to get by and finally in disgust they got out and looked into the carriage. There they found Mrs. Hewey dead. The horse had been shot through the heart.

A little further down the road they found the body of Hewey with a rifle close by. He had a wound in his breast.

Mother Nature provides Bert Bateman and Wesley Morehouse of Sodom, were getting out stone for the foundation of a house, when they

found a lot of eggs in a crack of a large rock. Upon breaking the eggs they found in each one a small snake with a white ring around its neck. Upon examination, each ring was found to contain a quantity of milk, varying from a few drops to half a teaspoonful, supposedly for purposes of nourishment.

Struggle for power Adirondack squatters, rich and poor alike, are to be bodily evicted from state land this fall of 1910 and their camps and dwellings torn down, according to state Forest, Fish and Game Commissioner James S. Whipple, in Albany.

He has instructed his subordinates to tear down all the buildings which will include summer hotels and numerous expensive bungalows of New York millionaires. The rich camp squatters can fight the state and stave off action for years to come and the attorney’s fees will not amount to any more than camp rental which is something that the poor squatters can not do. (Note…In the last 100 years, attorneys have been known to raise their rates!)

Sam Pasco seeks justice?

An investigation into the shooting of Alvin “Sam” Pasco,of Thurman was conducted Sept. 8, 1910 at Justice Hodgson’s office in Warrensburgh. Pasco was shot in the leg early morning June 27, 1910 in the Frost district in Thurman.

At the time of the shooting, Pasco’s alleged that Ransom Wilsey, a neighbor, was the person that shot him and a charge was brought against Wilsey and he was released on his own recognizance. Wilsey strongly denies the allegation.

The hearing was concluded on Sept. 9, 1910 and Ransom Wilsey was held for the Grand Jury on a charge of assault in the third degree. (Note: The complete story of this shooting appeared in June 12, 2010 Adirondack Journal.)

Wedding bells heard in region William H. Rist and Mrs. Sarah E. Bennett, both of Warrensburgh, were married Aug. 24, 1910 in Lewisville (River St.), at the residence of Godfrey Hewitt by the Rev. Richard Abbott at 7 a.m. An elaborate wedding breakfast was served soon after with the tables fairly groaning with good things to eat. The couple will take up residence in Warrensburgh.

News roundabout The first frost of the season visited this area Sept. 10, 1910, but fortunately it did little to harm local gardens.

There is a fine outlook for partridges and other game birds this fall in all sections of the Adirondacks.

Condemnation proceedings have begun on the property of H.F. Stanley at Riverside, for land in order to construct the Riverside-Wevertown state highway.

The road from Igerna to North Creek is open to travel as the bridges are completed. Cooper & Smith of Igerna have threshed the oats of James H. Wells and Emmett Raymond, the latter of which has purchased a horse in Chestertown.

Stewart Fuller of West Bolton, has bought a barn from E.E. Ross of Brant Lake. The barn is near Lorenzo Tripps, on the east side of the river.

Harvey Monroe, of Wevertown, with a company of men has gone to Stratten Hill, where he has a contract to cut and pile logs.

Charles E. Wheeler has purchased the lot and unfinished house of Ira Wilsey on Third St., Warrensburgh for $2,500.

Sheriff Thomas J. Smith’s automobile was damaged in a collision on the Lake George Road and was repaired at the Miller Brothers’ Garage in Glens Falls.

John H. Wade has a foundation built for another new house of Circle Avenue, North Creek.

Henry Ashe is driving a fine span of black mares, sisters, three and four years old. They are easy steppers and make a conspicuous appearance on the street. (Note…Henry Ashe owned what is now Ashe’s Hotel on Hudson St.) Dr. Cyrus S. Merrill and daughter, Miss Grace Merrill of Albany, were in Warrensburgh Sept. 11, 1910 with the doctor ’s nephew, Judge Carl Merrill and family of Glens Falls.

Doctor and Miss Merrill have just returned from a ten-month trip around the world. The party dined at the Warren House.

(Note: The Merrill’s summer home in Warrensburgh is now Grace’s Restaurant. The Warren House stood where Stewart’s convenience store is presently located.)

Study shows Cavalcade should be demolished

Hayes family to hold memorial gathering BRANT LAKE — The family of Gilbert "Charlie" Hayes invites all friends of Charlie and other area residents to join the family Saturday Sept. 18 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chestertown Conservation Club to share memories of Charlie Hayes and his life.

Hayes, 58, died April 24, 2010, after a brief illness. He was a heavy equipment operator for Galusha & Sons of Queensbury. He was formerly employed with the town of Horicon Highway Department.

Charlie will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother, among many admirable traits.

Conservatives need to show support for Lazio To the editor: The Conservative Party primary vote on Sept. 14 for the state governor is the most important race for enrolled Conservative Party members this election cycle.

Every registered Conservative must get out to vote for Rick Lazio. our endorsed Conservative Party candidate.

Our legislators have relied on tax hikes, surcharges, fees, and promises of federal government handouts to balance inflated budgets.

New York State has a spending problem.

The next governor and legislature must cut expenditures across the board — every agency and program must have significant cuts.

There are several issues vital to the North Country that must be addressed. We need a governor that will restore fiscal sanity to Albany, support good government and create jobs. The effect of this process will be beneficial to the citizens and taxpayers of the North Country.

Rick Lazio is prepared to be the next governor. Lazio, a former Congressman, has the courage necessary to take on the complex issues confronting New York and will institute appropriate strategies to get this state back on track.

To the editor: I have read the “Warren County Tourism White Paper” — all 41 detailed pages — and studied the material contained in its 10 tables and 10 figures. I ardently hope each Warren County Supervisor will do the same.

Surely this study should end the debate over the fate of the Cavalcade of Cars structure on the former Gaslight Village in Lake George. The report says, in bold words, “The rehabilitation of the Cavalcade building will likely do little to help reposition Warren County as a significant player in generating new convention and event business.” This is the study that County Supervisors said they were waiting for.

Well, here it is !

It’s time to vote “No” on any resolution to keep and renovate the Cavalcade of Cars. It’s time to return to the original vision for this project —a vision some sought to hijack — to a park-like natural conservation area and open festival space with no buildings. At some future time, a new and appropriately designed open pavilion, on a different footprint, can certainly be considered.

In table No. 10 of the study, it states, “Increasingly, travel customers are becoming more segmented in their interests. This includes not only the things they want to see and do, but also ecosystems and natural resources of the area.”

Perhaps soon we can stop calling this place “the former Gaslight Village” and refer to it in a more eco-friendly way.

How about “Gaslight Green?”

Jamboree offers two days of mountain music The annual Fiddlers’ Jamboree begins on at 8 a.m. Saturday Sept.

11 at the Veterans Memorial Park in Athol. Our local firefighters will be presenting a delicious breakfast, to be followed by a day of foot-stomping music.

On Sunday Sept. 12, the Jamboree continues noon to 8 p.m. with the music centering around good old-fashioned gospel tunes. Special guests will be Jim Davis, the Seeley Family, Hoddy Ovitt and Jam Witham & Family, plus a large group of musicians who will be joining in a Singspiration event. Bring your instrument and your best singing voice. Donations will be accepted. Food and snack booths will be staffed by local organizations.

Activities and events in ‘God’s Country’ The Thurman Quilting Club meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday Sept.

12 at the Thurman Town Hall in Athol. Meetings are open to everyone, of any age, who enjoys the sewing-related crafts.

The Sugar Loaf Mountain Seniors Club meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 15 at the Thurman Town Hall and will begin with a covered dish dinner for all to enjoy. All are welcome to join this funloving group — just bring a dish to pass. The group will be discussing upcoming trips and a Christmas project. For details, call Norma at 623-9425.

The Southern Adirondack Four-Wheeler Enthusiasts (S.A.F.E.) will be meeting Saturday Sept. 11 for a guided trail ride. Follow signs and meet at the trail head. Sign in at 7:30 a.m. Donations will be accepted for the excursion. In conjunction with this trip, the group plans to attend the Thurman firefighter’s breakfast at the Fiddlers Jamboree. S.A.F.E. is also sponsoring a poker run on Saturday Sept. 18, and club members invite all ATV riders 18 and older to bring attend.

All participants must bring their own registered, insured ATV for this outdoor adventure. Riders are to meet at 10 a.m. in the pavilion behind the Thurman Town Hall to register. A fee will be collected, which will include admission to a barbecue at 1` p.m. Prizes will be awarded, and it promises to be a fun day for those involved.

A Warren County rabies clinic will be held Saturday Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Thurman firehouse. A $10 donation is requested for each pet. Dogs need to have these shots before obtaining licenses. Bring cats in carriers and dogs on leashes. For details, call 761-6580.

A safe driving class is being held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 15 Those who are age 45 and older and have not yet signed up can call 623-9425 to see if there is still room in the class to register. The fee is $14.

Over the fence If you see a trolley rolling through town on Saturday Sept. 18, it’s not a figment of your imagination, but it is a group of people touring Thurman’s historical houses and sites. The excursion is an

annual event of the John Thurman Historical Society.

A gripe was received this past week on why our town seems not to have any law enforcement patrol cars checking our area once in a while. Prior to this gripe, I received many calls on all-terrain vehicles riding on the roadways, and some seen tearing up dirt roads and woodland paths.

Our taxes seen high enough to get police patrol coverage, even if it’s driving though town at least once per week!

Up here in Thurman, we are becoming overpopulated with beaver, deer, foxes and coy dogs — or so I’m told. Alert your children to not try to pet any of the wildlife, as rabies is always a concern!

Golden Rule Club has room for for all of us If you take some time to help someone out and make them smile, it will make you feel better also.

Many disabled and elderly folks find themselves in need of a ride to the doctor’s office, or they might need someone to pick up something for them at the grocery store — it can be done when a volunteer goes shopping for their own items.

Little thoughtful gestures mean a lot when people can no longer accomplish everything for themselves.

Think of this as you make your plans for Make a Difference Day, which is coming up in October. And teenagers, why not babysit for a mother to give her a break from the home chores and allow her several hours off to do errands?

We also suggest that if you cannot visit a loved one who has been placed in a nursing home, remember them with cards and notes. A little gesture like this will definitely brighten up their days.

Serena and Cody Rumble of Warrensburg are the proud parents of a baby girl, born Aug. 20 at Glens Falls Hospital. The child weighed 6 pounds 8 ounces and was nearly 19 inches long. Little Mya Sage is now at home with her sisters, two-year-old Jade, and Chloe, who is three.

Not a common combination, but one that was a big hit Sept. 1 with shoppers at the weekly Thurman Station Farmer’s Market.

Kids flocked around, with both apprehension and attraction evident on their faces.

They watched with delight as Biss held his 18-month-old alligator, gently scratching him on the head, then rolling him over onto his back until he appeared to be sleeping. And when the milk snake was taken from his tank and took a dip in cool water, they were fascinated. Many of the youngsters were former students in Biss’ Young Scholar accelerated science programs, offered through SUNY Adirondack in conjunction with local schools.

Biss’ visit was one of several special events offered by Thurman Station Farmers’ Market over this season. To date the market has hosted a book signing by Michael Kudish, author of “Railroads of the Adirondacks: A History.” In mid-August, the Thurman Station pavilion was humming with activity as heritage crafters spun wool, demonstrated weaving and churned butter, all to the live country-rock music of the group Don’t Quit Your Day Job. On Sept. 8, seven Adirondack authors gathered at the Market to visit with shoppers and sign copies of their books.

On Sept. 29, area painters and photographers are scheduled to display and sell their works in a special titled “Gallery by the Rails.” Thurman Station Farmers’ Market’s fall hours are 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays through Oct. 13. For details, see: www.ThurmanStation.com.

Bolton after-school program planned The Bolton After School Program is open to all local students in grades 1 through 5. The children will be dropped after school at the St. Sacrament Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall by bus and the schedule includes homework time, playtime, and project time.

The hours of operation are 3 p.m. to six p.m. on school days, and the cost is $4 per hour for this program, licensed

by New York State.

The students take trips to the local library once a week and snacks are offered. The children will be supervised by local resident Bambi Monroe.

After five years, Bolton Landing got its pier back in Rogers Park. On Aug. 29, more than 200 people gathered at the new pier for a re-dedication of the structure in the honor of Frank Leonbruno, who served the community on many levels and was a supervisor for the state Department of Environmental Conservation for decades. After several speeches and heartfelt stories from officials and friends of Leonbruno, about 200 attendees boarded the Lake George Steamboat’s craft Mohican for a free ride on the first launching from the new pier.

Work continues on I-87, lane closures expected

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — Northway lane closures and road shoulder restrictions are likely to be ongoing for several weeks between Exits 22 and 24 as the state Department of Transportation continues its work to upgrade the highway, DOT officials said this week.

The repair work, which began in mid-August, includes resurfacing the roadway for 25 miles between Northway Exit 18 in Queensbury and Exit 24 in Bolton, and replacing much of the guardrail along that distance, according to DOT spokesman Peter Van Keuren The paving project, totaling $11.8 million, is being accomplished by Kubricky Construction of Queensbury.

The project calls for removing two inches of the existing pavement and replacing it with new asphalt. Pavement striping and traffic data collectors imbedded at various locations in the pavement will be replaced. Repairs and improvements on the highway and its shoulders are being accomplished where necessary, Van Keuren said. Some of the work is to be done during nighttime hours.

The project includes replacing miles of the familiar oxi-

dized brown guardrails, once touted as an environmental innovation, with standard galvanized guardrails.

The rails being replaced were made of an alloy that was designed to rust only on the surface, supposedly saving painting and maintenance costs — while blending with the scenery. The steel’s surface oxidation was supposed to form a barrier to prevent struc-

tural decay.

But state engineers discovered about two years ago that the specialized guardrails were indeed decaying, and needed to be replaced for safety reasons.

The replacement statewide of the special oxidized guardrails, which are commonplace throughout the Adirondacks, is expected to cost $121 million statewide.

Burghers humbled by Fort Edward, 54-15

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — Sunday, the local high school football coaches watched Saturday’s game film. Monday, they narrated the film as they showed it to their players.

The footage was ugly.

Warrensburg had lost 54-15 to Fort Edward in a margin that was the highest negative tally many could remember.

But the Burghers hadn’t been caught offguard Saturday against Fort Edward. The players had watched the videos for three sessions in pre-season, and the coaches had analyzed the Forts’ moves many times over the past two weeks, Warrensburg Head Coach Mike Leonbruno said.

Burgher players were out of position, then didn’t respond to the play movement, he said.

“We knew where the Fort Edward players were going every play, but we didn’t execute,” he said. “Players were worried what everyone else was doing rather than doing their own job.”

But Defensive coach Mark Trapasso shouldered responsibility for the loss.

“It was a disaster,” he said Monday. “We weren’t where we were supposed to be on the field; we just didn’t make the tackles we needed to — and a lot of it was my fault. It was downright embarrassing.”

But a big factor in the results was also due to Fort Edward’s efficiency.

Fort Edward Quarterback Kevin McCarthy, a Junior, completed six passes in 10 attempts for 154 yards — well behind Burgher Mike Curtis’ 11 for 18 for 195 yards — but he also intercepted Curtis two times.

The veteran Burgher playmaker totaled three misfires Saturday.

While lagging in the airshow, Fort Edward dominated big-time on the ground, racking

up 269 yards in 33 running plays. The Burghers had a mere 16 yards on the ground for 16 carries.

The Forts had five runners tallying double-digits on the ground including Senior running back Justin White, who carried 13 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

Sophomore Tyler Brockway also scored two running touchdowns. Two more touchdowns were scored by Justin Mallory in pass receptions. Teammate Jonah Taylor brought down one touchdown pass.

A large factor in the sluggish ground game was the Burgher blocking, Warrensburg

coaches said Monday.

The 2010 offensive line, as athletic as the players are, has only one veteran — and four of the linemen were playing their first Varsity game ever. The result was the Forts were able to pressure quarterback Mike Curtis — and stop Burgher runners, play after play.

The game did have its positive aspects, the coaches said.

There were no fumbles.

Curtis had a good day passing, although the throws yielded only two touchdowns.

Curtis connected with no less than four receivers for impressive gains: Lucas Nelson, Hunter Werner, Zach Baer, and Nick Monroe — the latter two for touchdowns.

Curtis’ passing statistics would have been even better, had a 60-yard pass play not been nullified by a controversial penalty of blocking below the waist.

This play, had it been left to stand, would have given Warrensburg the lead early on, Leonbruno said.

“This touchdown could have been huge for us, keeping up our momentum,” the coach said. As it was, the Forts led by only one touchdown at the half, as the score was 22-15.

Undeterred by the loss, Leonbruno said he had hopes for the team, particularly after this humbling experience.

“The linemen are going to improve quickly, and we’re going to have a dominant offense once our running game develops,” he said.

Trapasso echoed the point. “We’re looking for a much better effort in the Salem game this Saturday,” he said. “We have nowhere to go but up.”

Leonbruno agreed the worst was now over.

“We’re done and over with it; now we move on,” he said.

Cougars show their skills in defeating Johnsburg

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN — Some area sports observers have high hopes this year for the North Warren Boys Soccer team, and iconsidering their season-opening win over Johnsburg Friday, they’re living up to expectations.

North Warren defeated Johnsburg 2-1 in a game that featured a lot of action and balanced ball possession between both teams.

About 10 minutes into the first half, the Cougars scored their first goal on a header by Joe Aiken, deflecting a corner kick by Garth Griffen. Johnsburg’s Austin Washburn answered back five minutes later.

Then with about 10 minutes left in the game, Thom Pereau struck back in a mini-breakaway.

Cougar Coach Jason Humiston had seen Johnsburg’s talented goalie Dylan Wolfe move up occasionally, and he advised

his players to take advantage of it.

Pereau did so, eluding pursuing defenders about 30 yards out, then slamming the ball just over Wolfe’s fingertips. It sailed a mere inches under the crossbar for the winning goal.

Over the game, Kristian Seeley lived up to his reputation by making 10 saves.

Humiston praised Johnsburg’s program and talent, as well as the skills of his own players.

“We have nine Seniors this year, and they know how to play,” he said, noting his team has power and speed up front. “They played really well Friday, considering we had two starters out.”

Although those two players were likely to be back in action without delay, the team was still faced with a challenging week.

The squad was scheduled to play Hadley-Luzerne, Salem and Corinth — on Monday, Wednesday and Friday respectively, Humiston said.

“We’re back into the grind,” Humiston said.

Warriors downed by Tamarac CLUMS CORNERS — Despite a fourth-quarter offensive surge that included a full-field kickoff return, the Lake George Football team fell short Friday in their effort to topple Tamarac, as they lost by a score of 28-18.

Tamarack quarterback Nick Casale was efficient in his role, connecting with four receivers 6 times of 9 attempts for 130 yards.

Alex Liucci scored two touchdowns for Lake George, one on a 30 yard run and the second by receiving a pass from Quarterback Nate Fidd. Marty Zivica scored the 99-yard kickoff return for his team’s comeback effort. Kyle McCabe was the Warriors’ leading rusher with 53 yards.

Next up for Lake George is Corinth at home on Thursday Sept. 8.
