block of wood standing in a vise. As the axe tore into the wood, a chunk flew past her lean torso, 145 pounds of muscle in motion. With one mor e violent swing, she chopped through the block, over a foot thick, to conclude the “Standing
Block” event in the lumberjack competition held r ecently at Stony Cr eek Mountain Festival. The crowd joined other competitors in cheering her feat as she gazed toward the announcer.

CHESTER — Local and state officials gathered Tuesday to celebrate the opening of the expanded Scar oon Manor Campgr ound and Day Use ar ea, a facility that now accommodates overnight camping. Covering 241 acres on the west side of Schr oon Lake, the c ampground i s c onsidered a prime attraction for vacationers and a prime element in the economies of northern Warren and southern Essex counties. The new development is on the site of the historic Scaroon Manor r esort, considered an important component of local cultural heritage. Many of the original buildings r emain intact, with many new facilities built recently by the state. With its 60 sites, the campground can now accommodate tents, trailers and selfcontained R V campers and offers a such amenities as hiking, fishing, motorboating, canoeing, bicycling, waterskiing, picnicking and swimming. The campground also offers extensive barrier-free access for people with mobility limitations, observed state Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens at the ceremony.
