By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com QUEENSBURY — W ith a little help, Nathalie Menshausen, a bright-eyed 100year-old woman fr om Warrensburg walked across a room in an assisted living community activity r oom and sat down to talk about her life.

Born June 27, 1911, she recently observed her 100th birthday, celebrated by relatives and friends at a party held in her honor at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Saratoga Springs.

Asked July 7 for her opinion on the reasons for her longevity, she credited good nutrition due to eating healthy foods.

Menshausen was a public school nutritionist, most r ecently working for the Hudson Falls School District in a 19-year stint.

“I’m looking forwar d to my r etirement,“ she said with a grin. “And when people r etire, they have to be well to enjoy it.”

The news of the pro gram’s apparent demise — unless state funding is r estored — prompted outcries this week, w hile h uman s ervice agencies scrambled to figure out how to continue to obtain food for those in need.

For 21 years, the Gleaning program of ComLinks in Malone has pr ovided food twice a month at no charge for those facing har dship.

Food was deliver ed to various town halls, food pantries, charities and other emergency food distribution

organizations to be doled out to a total of 75,000 people in the North Country.

The four-day, three-night trip is to include two full-course dinners, including a lobster bake, plus three breakfasts.

Trip destinations include Kennebunkport, Portland — including a stop at the L.L. Bean and Dexter factory outlets.

Curfew reminder offered Warrensburg town officials have issued a reminder to area parents that a curfew is on the books for children under 18, and the law is routinely enforced.

The curfew pr ohibits children under 18 to be outside in town after 10 p.m. on Sundays through Thursdays, and after 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Historically, teenagers ha ve gather ed in v arious spots along Main St. in the hamlet late at night, and occasionally vandalism and alter cations have occurr ed. The curfew was enacted years ago to stem such activity.

The curfew does not apply to children who are being transported by a person over the age of 18 with the consent of parents of the underage child.

Also, children under 18 are allowed to travel to and from work after hours for a span of 30 minutes.

Concert at church’s ‘Summerfest’ All are welcome to attend the Community Summerfest of the First United Methodist Chur ch of W arrensburg. The event is set for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturd ay, July 23 at the church on Main St. The fest feature s the local Christian band “Bro-ken - Musicianaries for Christ.”

HHHN race to benefit children’s health care WA R R E N S B U R G — Hudson Headwater Health Network, a provider of primary health care in the lower Adirondacks, w ill s oon be holding its annual footrace to boost wellness of local children.

HHHN’s foundation has scheduled its seventh annual Car e for Kids 5K Run & Fitness W alk for 9 a.m.

Sunday, July 31 to benefit the pediatric pr ogram of the network’s chain of clinics. The entry fee is $20 in advance and $25 after July 28. The first 400 participants will r eceive a commemorative T-shirt.

Green group honors Margaret Darrin by naming park HAGUE — The Lake George Land Conservancy held a dedication cer emony June 2 4, na ming a p oint o n Lake Geor ge in honor of Margaret A. Darrin of Queensbury for her actions in land conservation.

The dedication of “Peggy’s Point” was made in recognition of Darrin’s significant contributions to the Lake Geor ge Land Conservancy, including her donation in 2005 of the 1.9-acr e park.

Nearly 100 people participated in the celebration at the Hague Community Center, including Peggy’s thr ee sons and families. Among those speaking at the event were Hague T own Supervisor Dan Belden, historian Judy Shultz, Land Conservancy of ficials John Macionis, Nancy W illiams, and Peggy’s sons Drake and David and granddaughter, Hannah Darrin.

Macionis said Darrin provided a great inspiration for others.

Drake Darrin related fond personal memories of times his mother , including the many swimming lessons from their dock.

“Your love of the lake over the years is contagious,” he said.

Williams thanked those that contributed to the park and its Friendship Gar den, including Dan Belden, the Town of Hague staf f, David and Joanne DeFranco and team at DeFranco Landscaping, Judy Shultz and the Hague Historical Society , the Darrin family , Julia Beaty, Mary Lou Doulin, Peter Foster , Doug Langdon, Rich Mor gan, Ray Murray , Scott and Alice Patchett, Betty Hans Rettig and the Carillon Gar den Club, Nancy Scarzello, C.L. Williams, and the Conservancy’s Stewar dship Assistants Mike Cerasaro and Jack W illis who worked for weeks to the fence, path and garden.

Mixed feelings on Crown Changes welcome at APA Point assessor decision

T

he Cr own Point T own Boar d is switching fr om thr ee elected assessors to a sole appointed assessor. Their July 14 decision was bold, as it is unpopular with many r esidents. It is wise, as it will save taxpayers mor e than $18,000 a year. And it is the tipping point of what could become a tr end in Essex County if other towns follow their lead.

As it stands now, nine of the 18 towns in Essex County have sole assessors, all appointed by their town boards. Crown Point will be number 10 at the end of 2011. Looking at how towns in neighboring counties handle their assessing needs, we’r e left to wonder why many Essex County towns are so slow in making the switch from a threemember board of assessors to a sole assessor.

After all, Cr own Point is mer ely following a statewide trend of moving to a sole assessor; the state Office of Real Property Tax Services r eported that 88 per cent of towns in New York in 2010 had sole appointed assessors, up from 48 percent in 1983. The trend is also clear in the North Country.

In Warren County, all but two of the 1 1 towns (Stony Cr eek and Thurman) have a sole assessor . The town of Johnsbur g switched in 2000, and the town of Bolton did so i n 1 991, b oth b y a v ote f rom th e t own boards. In a 1990 r eferendum, r esidents in the town of Hague voted to change to a sole assessor system.

In Clinton County , all but two of the 14 towns (Beekmantown and Ellenbur g) have a sole assessor.

In Franklin County, all but one of the 19 towns (Constable) have a sole assessor.

And in Hamilton County , all nine towns have a sole assessor (two are elected and the rest are appointed).

In the North Country , ther e ar e clearly more sole assessors than thr ee-member boards of assessors, and we think mor e towns should make the switch, especially in Essex County.

In today’s economic climate, it’s imperative that government bodies, such as town boards, r educe tax bur dens for their r esidents as much as pos sible. If they can do

that by achieving the same end result — an accurate assessment roll in this case — with one person rather than thr ee, they should do so. Cut the pork. Streamline the process.

Make it less cumbersome.

The Cr own Point T own Boar d members who voted for the change cited financial reasons for their decision. They wanted to save money. And while $18,000 doesn’t go as far as it used to, every little bit helps.

Given the backlash in Cr own Point fr om an overwhelming number of r esidents opposing a sole assessor system, ther e could have been a better way to make this decision. Instead of Town Board members creating a local law themselves, effective Dec. 31, it would have been nice for them to let the voters decide in a fall referendum. It’s true, voters put Town Board members in office to make tough decisions; however , taking away the voters’ choice to decide their own assessor system, especially when it is this controversial, was a mistake.

Yet simply addressing the assessor issue, no matter how the change was made, may have been political suicide for some boar d members.

After the July 14 vote, two Cr own Point assessors — Stephen Mackay and Chairman Carl Ross — voiced their intent to get rid of the three Town Board members who voted for the sole assessor system — Supervisor Bethany Kosmider and council members Bob Patnode and Yvonne Dushane. Kosmider and Dushane ar e up for r e-election this fall. Mackay said, “They ar e going down.” Ross vowed, “These people are not going to be r e-elected.” It should make for an exciting election season.

It’s these possible repercussions from the Crown Point electorate that make the Town Board’s decision a courageous one. W e’re just not sure the board had to be that courageous.

News roundabout •100 Years Ago – July, 1911• Auto careens over embankment A serious auto accident occurred at North River on the evening of July 22, 1911 when a machine containing Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Rogers and daughter , Eva and Mrs. Bert Burns, all of that place, plunged over an embankment. Mr . Rogers and the child wer e the only ones to escape injury.

The machine is owned by Mr . Smith and the party was returning to North River when the car became unmanageable and plunged airborne over an embankment hurling the occupants out with such force that nearly all were rendered unconscious.

Little Eva escaped unhurt, having been thrown from the auto directly into the middle of a wide br ook from which she waded out. Mrs. Smith was pinioned underneath the car and when Drs. Fuller and Br ush arrived they found that her leg was fractur ed above the knee. Mr . Smith was badly cut about the face and hands. Mrs. Bert Burns sustained a sprained ankle.

Letters to the Editor Local conservative party not free of dirty politics To the Adirondack Journal: When one gets involved in politics they soon learn just how “down and dirty” the game really is.

I state this because as a Conservative Party member in Lake Geor ge I learned that the Conservatives ar e just as dirty as the big boys.

Why do I say this? Because early on in this campaign season, one of the people opposing the incumbents asked the Conservative Party for a cr oss-endorsement

and was told — and I do believe it was in print — that the Conservatives wer e not going to endorse anyone in this year ’s local elections.

Then last week I hear d a rumor so I then FOILed for any and all Conservative Party designating petitions and lo and behold: They endorsed the curr ent Lake George T own Supervisor Frank McCoy. And this was all done by two people.

The curr ent Lake Geor ge Conservative Committee, whose members were up for re-election this year and I, as a Conservative, were not notified of this, and the same two people wer e the only ones to submit a petition, so

they will r emain the committee.

The County Chairperson, who lives in W arrensburg, approved all of this without even polling the other members, of which there are only, I believe, 33 in the town of Lake George.

Isn’t this the prime example of “down and dirty” backdoor politics? No wonder this great nation of ours is in the shape it is in. It is just downright sickening that we the people cannot trust the people we put our trust in.

I understand your issues. You have a job that can be incredibly difficult on its own. On top of that, you have government agencies that keep moving the goal posts and bureaucrats and administrators who keep telling you how to do your job while not having set foot in a classr oom since their own graduation.

Add to that list unfunded mandates. My utmost thanks and respect for your dedication.

However, your contract package is indefensible in these harsh economic times. W e are all str uggling with declining r evenues and increased costs. A health care plan costing in excess of $21,000 for a family coverage with an 8 per cent contribution on your part is a slap in the face to the taxpayers who you asked to support the budget. The only group I can think of that is even close to r eceiving benefits like teachers do, is Congre ss and you know what most of us think of them.

I don’t know of anyone in the private or public sector in upstate New York that even comes close. For myself, I have an individual EPO plan thr ough CDPHP that comes out of my pocket 100 per cent. I’d love to

have a mor e deluxe plan, but I have what I can afford, as do most of us. W ith the buying power of NYSUT’s membership, I have to believe that Lake Geor ge teachers could negotiate a great health care package for half of what taxpayers currently pay and then increase your contribution to say 16 per cent.

Your out-of-pocket premium cost would remain the same but the budget, which currently spends about $4,000,000 on health care, could be r educed by one million dollars! This savings could be passed on to the taxpayers in the form of lower property taxes and I could almost guarantee you an approved budget. Keep in mind that this would not require even one teacher layoff.

In closing, let me r emind all who ar e opposed to any concessions of a history lesson.

Enjoy the summer, just for the health of it!

S

ummer is made for kids. The season is ideally suited for leisure time in the outdoors, and it provides a special time to escape from the routines of school, studies and homework. It presents youngsters with an opportunity to expand their boundaries, and test their skills. Summers are for explorations, and it is often a period of tremendous growth, both physically and mentally.

The subtle changes young adults experience, are often unseen in the familiar confines of a school setting. Yet these same growth spurts, are easy to spot after a long summer ’s rest.

Newton’s first law of physics, explained, “A body at rest tends to stay at rest, a body in motion tends to stay in motion.” This law is applicable to a wide variety of situations, but it is most appropriate when applied to children and young adults.

According to a recent Special Report on Youth, issued by The Outdoor Foundation, fewer and fewer youth are taking to the outdoors each year. In recent years, the combination of rapidly changing social media, and technological advancements, has been responsible for keeping more kids indoors, than at any time in recent history.

The report concludes, “American childhood has rapidly moved indoors, leading to epidemic levels of childhood obesity and inac-

tivity. The United States is now facing an unprecedented public health and conservation problem.

Reconnecting youth with the outdoors has become critical to the health of future generations and the health of our natural landscapes. Our children are desperate for the physical, mental and social benefits of a healthy, active outdoor lifestyle, and our natural landscapes need the support and protection of individuals with a strong connection to the outdoors.”

The report, based on the most comprehensive national survey of American participation in outdoor recreation, offers interesting insights into the motivations of both participants and non-participants.

A few key findings include: Total Participation — Nearly 60 percent of American youth ages 6 to 24 participate in outdoor recreation.

Gender Disparities — Males of all ages participate at a higher rate than females, and 56 percent of youth outdoor participants ages 6 to 24 are male.

Top Activities — Running, bicycling, fishing, camping and hiking are the most popular outdoor activities among youth.

Youngest Activities — Skateboarding, BMX bicycling, snowboarding, climbing and triathlon have the highest percentage of youth participants and lowest percentage of adults.

Parents, friends and family are primarily responsible for introducing youth to the outdoors. Most youth enjoy the fun, relaxation and exercise of outdoor activities.

The most commonly cited barriers to youth participation are a lack of interest and a lack of time for outdoor recreation. Recreation is “easier and more fun” indoors.

Adults with children in the household participate in outdoor recreation at higher levels than adults without children in their household. Youth participation in outdoor recreation continues to experience the greatest decrease among the ages of 6-12, however, the rates for older youth showed a more positive trend. The most popular outdoor activities, as determined by participation, were also the most common gateway activities. These activities are easily accessible, easy to learn, and contagious. Fishing topped the list at (17%), jogging and trail running (16%), camping (16%), road and mountain biking (15%) and hiking(12%).

Statistics indicate that visits to national and state parks have fallen off by as much as 25 percent in the last decade, as kids remain indoors watching TV or playing computer games. There is no excuse for parents in the Adirondacks, to allow for such behavior, especially with the easily available access to the outdoors.

Medical and economic data indicate that children who play outdoors perform better in school.

They have higher SAT scores, exhibit fewer behavioral challenges, and experience fewer attentiondeficit disorders. Outdoor play lowers the risk of health care, reduces stress, increases attention

“We had seen this coming with Gleaning,” she said. “It’s a nice part of our pro gram, but we weren’t depending on it.”

In Lake Geor ge, the town food pantry has virtually no budget, so the loss of Gleaning deliveries will have an impact, Deputy Town Clerk Janee Dorman said.

“This is too bad,” she said. “but we’r e hoping for the best.”

Dorman and the volunteers will appare ntly be doing more than hoping. They are setting up a dumpster next to the town hall to collect clean paper , boxboard, cardboard and newspaper, fr om which they can earn $25 per load. The money will go towards buying a food freezer, and afterwards, food items from various sources, she said.

Evelyn Wood of Thurman said she would be seeking to boost the amount of food obtained thr ough the Regional Food Bank, with local volunteers divvying up the allotments in the town hall.

“It’s sad to see this fr ee food pr ogram go, but we’ll pick up pallets of food and do our own ‘Gleaning thing.’— We’ll do okay.”

Cassini lauded such ef forts, while he ur ged area citizens to lobby their legislators to have funding for Gleaning r estored.

“It’s top priority to keep the food coming to those who need it,” he said.

Lynn Ackershoek of Community Action Agency echoed the point.

“These programs will be sorely missed,” she said, noting that the demand for food assistance has been rising 15 to 20 percent a year until 2008, when the economic collapse sent the requests for assistance soaring. “The need for food is just so incredible — People walk in here , and you can tell they’re scared to death.”

New pastor On Sunday, July 24 during the 9 a.m. worship service, Rev. Henry Frueh will be officially welcomed as the new pastor of Emmanuel United Methodist Chur ch, Stewart Ave., Bolton Landing. A reception f or R ev. F rueh a nd his wife, Janice, will follow.

Rev. Fr ueh has pastor ed large and small churches for 27 years including five years as Pastor of Christ Church of Glens Falls. For the last five years he has served as Superintendent of a r egional methodist confer ence of churches.

Frueh earned a degree in Natural Resource Management from the University of Connecticut and a divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary of Kentucky.

Church members say Rev. Frueh comes to Bolton Landing with a wealth of experience, an understanding of church development, and a desire to r each out to the community.

Having a longtime love for the Adirondacks, he also is initiating “Eco Sabbath Ministries,” combining the beauty of the mountains with a retreat ministry.

Opening the show will be Bolton’s own “Sour Mash,” a group featuring four Bolton Central students: Johnny Saris on lead guitar , James Woods on bass, Tyler Calzada on drums and Evan Malone, lead vocals. The gr oup is slated to perform a selection of classic rock hits from the 1960s and 1970s.

Following is the NewYork Players, a popular 10-piece group known r egionally for their b ig-band s ound. T hey are scheduled to play music from the 1940s to curr ent day hits. Members of this group have appear ed onstage alongside such r ock stars as Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Marshall T ucker, and many others.

The show is a fundraiser for the Bolton Booster Club.

Top athletes booked for beach pole vault event this Saturday

Dozens of athletes, male and female, will be featured in Adirondack Aerial Assault, set for Shepard Park Beach Saturday, July 23, starting at 9:30 a.m.

LAKE GEORGE — Visitors to Shepard Park Beach this weekend will be seeing far more action than typical for summer.

On Satur day, July 23, spectators will be watching athletes hurtling 17 or 18 feet into the sky land tumbling back to the sand in a beach pole vault competition — a first-ever for Lake George.

Named Adir ondack Aerial Assault, the event will featur e a half-dozen world-class pole vaulters among the 40 to 50 male and female competitors, accor ding to event coorganizer Dennis Hogan of Ballston Spa. “Spectators will be seeing the cre am of the crop in pole vaulting,” he said, noting that several entered in the event’s Elite class are training to qualify for the U.S. Olympics.

The c ompetition i s s eparated i nto t hree classes: high school, open class — which is for college age r ecreational vaulters — and the Elite class, for seasoned athletes.

Action starts at 9:30 a.m. with high school athletes, followed by the female Open class.

About noon, Elite female and male athletes will be competing, and in mid-afternoon, high school and male Open classes will be vaulting.

Among the athletes with national r eputations competing in Aerial Assault ar e Rory Quiller of Boulder , Colo., Joe Samaniuk of Madison, Wisc. and Luke Shoen of W est Islip. All are likely to be jumping over 18 feet (less than 2 feet shy of the world record).

People in Shepar d Park will be watching some thrilling action up close.

“With spectators 15 feet away or so on the hillside in the park or on the dock nearby will have fantastic views,” Hogan said, noting that there will be music, an emcee, and a few vendors.

He pr edicted that athletes also would be enjoying the day, hailing each other ’s feats, then urging top national vaulters to come to next year ’s edition of Aerial Assault.

“They’ll be cheering each other on, enjoying the camaraderie and the scenic lakeside setting, and they’ll go back and tell other vaulters they have to come to Lake Geor ge for 2012,” Hogan said.

Woman turns 100 from page 1

She said a balanced diet, with ample pro Grandson of Nathalie Menshausen tein and vegetables, and little or no sugar and fat, would lead to a long, healthy life.

“Eat your vegetables and protein — protein makes you strong,” she said. “Good exercise and adequate sleep ar e important too.”

Menshausen moved to W arrensburg when she was entering the sixth grade, because her par ents, Richar d B. Lewis and Mary Fuller — whose education had only reached 4th and 7th grades respectively — wanted to make sur e their five childr en were well-schooled, she said.

“They believed it was very important for their childr en to have a better education than they had,” Menshausen said.

Her father , a contractor , built homes in Blue Mountain Lake, following the footsteps of his father, Duane Fuller, who built rustic cabins there after serving in the U.S. Civil War. His remains are buried in a cemetery in North River.

Menshausen praised her father ’s expertise as a builder.

“Those homes he built weren’t just ‘slaphappy’ houses,” she said.

Menshausen said her husband, who died in 1994, served for years as W arrensburg’s postmaster.

Menshausen continued that their sons and daughters, four in all, wer e a major source of joy in her life, and they all wer e successful in their own right.

“I'm proud of all my children and grandchildren and their accomplishments,” she said.

Dinner Theatre’s ‘Skin Deep’ explores late-life romance LAKE GEORGE — Last-chance romance, one’s self-image, aspects of aging and the per ception of beauty ar e all explored in the comedy “Skin Deep,” now onstage at the Lake Geor ge Dinner Theatr e.

The venue is located at the Holiday Inn Resort, Canada St., Lake George Village.

In the play, Sheila Whiting tries to set up her l arge, l ovable, b ut s pinsterish s ister, Maureen (actress Emily Mikesell) on a blind date without knowing the man she’s matchmaking with her sister.

The result is an engaging comedy by Jon Lonoff about mid-life r omance. As Maureen struggles with her self-image and the sweet advances of Joseph Spinelli, Sheila’s husband, Squire, vainly attempts to contro l his wife’s obsession with plastic sur gery and his own flirtatious nature. The play is appropriate for all audiences, director Terry Rabine said.

Appearing in the show are Emily Mikesell, as Maureen Whiting, Monica Cangero as Sheila Whiting, Dennis Holland as Squire, and Stephen Pelletier as Joe.

Mikesell has performed in various Capital Repertory Theatre productions, and she created the Of f-Broadway role of America in Radio Gals. she’s also appeared in many regional theater productions in the U.S. Holland has toured internationally with the Br oadway-based pr oduction of The Music Man, and has also appeared in various regional productions across the nation.

Cangero has appeared in many r egional productions, and Stephen Pelletier ’s area credits include The Strange & Curious Tale of Henry Hudson and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Chester’s Summerfest draws a crowd C H E S T E RTO W N — T h e community celebration known as Summerfest, held July 9 at the Chestertown Municipal Center , was a considerable success, according to event or ganizers who’ve been watching it grow over the past dour years.

Held annually by the North Warren Chamber of Commerce and the T own of Chester, the 201 1 edition of the festival dr ew more people than ever in its short history —and the number of vendors, exhibitions and demonstrations also set a record.

Chamber office manager Lynn Engelmann said about 30 vendors and a dozen games and various activities kept attendees busy and entertained.

“We had a r eally good turnout,” she said, noting that the groundbreaking ceremony for the Chester Veterans Memorial held nearby attracted many who also attended the festival.

She said children’s activities were particularly popular.

To the delight of childr en — and adults, too — Darryl Baldwin of Gloversville twisted colorful balloons into distinctive unusual creations, r epresenting vehicles, animals, insects, and all kinds of creatures.

Engelmann said Baldwin even made a bouquet of flowers out of red, white and blue balloons.

“You name it, he could make it,” she said, noting that children were so enthusiastic about his work, they wouldn’t allow him a br eak all day. “He cr eated motorcycles, bumblebees and animals — It was very impr essive.”

Equally as talented was Sue Fer dinand of Bolton, painting childr en’s faces with fanciful designs. For hours, she had long lines awaiting her artistry.

The r eturn attraction of the pie eating contest, was a big hit as always, with the

children, event or ganizer Edna Trumble said.

Community gr oups like the Chestertown Rotary Club were well represented.

The Rotarians gr eeted people, o perated a t rivia g ame based on questions about local lore, and sold raffle tickets for an $1,800 travel voucher and a set of golf clubs.

Others, like the local fir e companies, pr ovided bounce houses and activities.

Entertainment included Mountain Quickstep, a group that is headed out soon on a world tour sponsored by U.S. State Department. The fireworks offered a spectacular show for a substantial cr owd, T rumble said.

“Our fir eworks wer e the best yet, they’r e better than any other display in the r egion, even Lake Geor ge,” she said. “It’s not just a lot of noise, it’s a lot of absolutely gorgeous color.”
