WA R R E N S B U R G — A motion to cut the W arrensburg Central School District’s pr oposed 201 112 budget down to a zer o percent incr ease in local tax levy was narrowly defeated Monday evening by the school board in a 43 vote. Minutes later, the board decided in a similar 4-3 divided vote to endorse the school administration’s recommended 201 1-12 budget, calling for appropriations of $18,521,841 — and to spend $18,506,841 as a contingency plan. The approved budget, which calls for an overall decrease in spending of 2.61 percent from the present year but an increase of 1.92 per cent in local tax levy, now goes befor e a public vote in the annual school district election, to be held fr om 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 in the high school gymnasium. If the endorsed budget is defeated in the public vote, the contingency plan goes into effect.
WA R R E N S B U R G — Ry a n Winslow, a local high school sports star and academic standout embarking on a pr omising business car eer, died nearly five years ago on Memorial Day weekend in a tragic boating accident on Lake George. The night of R yan W inslow’s death, his parents, Bryan and DonneLynn W inslow, decided to donate Ryan’s organs so others’ lives could continue. This next week, the W inslows intend to meet up with Gary Antognioni of Mount Pleasant, S.C., the recipient of R yan’s heart, and various members of the Antognioni family. It will be the first time the Winslows have met the Antognionis in person, although they’ve exchanged cards and emails. “It means so much to me that Ryan’s heart is still beating,” DonneLynn Winslow said, choking back the tears. “What makes it so special is that family and friends were very important to Ryan, and the Antognionis are a wonderful family.” Gary and Ellen Antognioni, Winslow said, have three children —

GLENS FALLS — Fourteen months ago, teenager Ashley LaPoint had her face smashed against the floor and had been stabbed several times by a career criminal. Under the threat of impending death, she had the foresight and presence to tell the attacker the crime could be portrayed to police as a bur glary, with the man pr etending
to be one of the victims — after asking him to let her live to get through high school. This savvy response, under extreme duress, saved her and her mother’s life, law enforcement officers have said. The two victims of the Jan. 2010 attack in Lake Geor ge, Ashley and Debra LaPoint, were pr esented with the annual Courage Award Monday during a cer emonial breakfast at the Queensbury Hotel in observance of Crime Victims’ Week.

LAKE GEORGE — A Freshman at Lake George High S chool h as j ust a ccomplished something few people of any age around the world have — she’s completed basic training on using her bionic hand. Paige Edwar ds, 14, of Lake George recently finished a series of therapy sessions at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital in Schenectady. The sessions wer e to help her master the use of her new artificial fingers — and she can now file and paint her fingernails, tie her shoes and fix her hair with relative ease. Paige was the first person in the Hudson Valley to have bionic fingers fitted. An advanced pr osthetic called Pr oDigits fr om Touch Bionics, considered to incorporate r evolutionary technology , suddenly opened up possibilities Paige never thought possible, she said in a recent interview.
