Teen suspect arrested in bogus crash call case

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — A bogus report of a serious rollover crash radioed in recently to county emergency dispatchers sent rescue personnel scrambling, and now police believe they’ve arrested the perpetrator.

The Warren County Sheriff ’s Office reported Monday Nicholas D. Jones they arrested Nicholas D. Jones, 18, of Lafond Way, Minerva on a Misdemeanor charge of third-degree Falsely Reporting an Incident.

LAKE GEORGE — George Green of Lake George walked down Canada St. amongst 60 or so parishioners of various area churches gathered to join the Stations of the Cross procession on Good Friday through Lake George.

Green said this dramatic reminder of Jesus’ suffering prior to his crucifixion held significant meaning not only for those marching, but also for the community at large.

“This brings out the moral integrity of our community, this keeps us rolling,” he said. “It’s tough in a tourist area to keep this spirit — but events like this are a real sign of faith.”

The citizens in this fourth annual procession were from not only the four local churches in Lake George Village, but area towns without particular church affiliations.

Pastors of the churches said the event symbolized the ecumenical spirit in Lake George — that despite different religious traditions, spiritual unity prevailed, they said.

The procession’s participants began at Sacred Heart church, with Berardi reading scriptures referring to Christ’s agony in the Garden. They walked several blocks, in a procession behind a series of volunteers carrying a cross, to the Old

CHESTERTOWN — In two weeks, four local dance students will take the stage in New York City to perform in front of thousands in Times Square.

Gillian Hayden and Victoria Hall of Johnsburg plus Brianna Daley and Renee Madden of North Warren High School will perform April 16 through 18 at an annual dance convention in Manhattan.

The group dances at the Guiding Steps North studio in Chestertown under the instruction of Krystal Ortiz. This group will be joined in New York City by their affiliated dance groups, Guiding Steps and Praise Dance Co. of South Glens Falls.

In the coming weeks, the local girls will be putting the final touches on their lyrical performance of TobyMac’s “City On Our Knees.” On a recent

Monday the girls gathered for rehearsal, still sore from dancing over the weekend at Dance Olympus in Albany — and they began to focus on the Times Square performance.

“They are really sore and tired, but they have been working so hard for this,” Ortiz said.

“It’s really paying off.”

The Manhattan convention is directed by the head choreographer of the famed Rockettes and it attracts dance troupes and schools from across the country. The students will have the opportunity to not only dance in Times Square, but work with prominent instructors such as Jared Grimes — considered a master of jazz and hip hop idioms.

For some, this is their first experience with a performance of this caliber.

“I am excited, but nervous because I have never even been to New York City before,” said Hayden, the youngest dancer to perform.

The girls who will perform range in age from 12 through 17 and have all been dancing for close to 10 years.

never done anything like this before,” Daley said.

Guiding Steps North has been operating in Chestertown since September. After several local dance studios disbanded the prior year, parents contacted Debra Wood, director of Guiding Steps and within months her daughter, Ortiz, started offering classes at the studio in Chestertown.

Ortiz has danced at the convention before with past

troupes, but this is the first time she will be bringing a group of her students to perform.

“They are well prepared and dance very well for their ages,” she said. “I am certainly proud of the work they have done and I am excited for this opportunity.”

Warrensburg Bike Week plans expand Spring is here, and in recent years, that means Warrensburg Bike Week is approaching.

Held annually to coincide with the week-long Americade touring rally, the Bike Week generally draws a greater proportion of the Harley-and-leather crowd, as well as a variety of motorcycle accessory vendors who are seeking either more space or a lower price than they can obtain as an Americade-endorsed vendor. Warrensburg also offers a more lowkey backdrop for riders, in contrast to Lake George Village.

This year ’s Bike Week, set for June 5 through 12, offers more activities than in the past, as the concept has expanded due to the ever-growing popularity of the event.

The 2010 Bike Week includes fundraisers to benefit North Country Ministry, North Country Wild Care, and Warrensburg Elementary School Playground Fund. Poker runs will be held too, in raising money for charities.

Don Bagwell who has served for as coordinator of Warrensburg Bike Week, reports that interest remains high for the event, which he said is held to boost Warrensburg’s tourism, commerce, and the interests of its residents.

Sullivan to exhibit art at Riverside Gallery Riverside Gallery will be holding an open house and artist’s reception Friday April 16 from 6:30-8:30 p.m., launching an exhibition of the paintings of Patrick Sullivan.

Light refreshments will be served at the event.

Sullivan has been an art teacher for 30 years, serving for decades as an instructor at Warrensburg High School.

A group of his works focus on personal roots. Sullivan has spent many hours listening to people’s life stories, and he discerns their connections to special places, which prompts him to reach back in time and bring those memories back to life. These images of the places in one’s heart preserve a sense of history and family, he explained recently.

Sullivan’s “Painted Nature” mixed–media works take the viewer in another intriguing direction. These pieces combine the real and the abstract with elements of choice and chance, he said, adding that each endeavor is a unique adventure in color and design.

The gallery is located at the intersection of Elm St. and Richards Ave. (state Rte. 418). Riverside Gallery’s regular business hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call the gallery at 623-2026 for details.

Citizen of the Year nominees sought The Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce continues to seek nominations for their 2010 Citizen of the Year. Nomination forms are available at the town hall, Richards Library, and the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce office.

The Citizen of the Year will be chosen at the May meeting of the Chamber ’s board of directors, and will be honored at a dinner in June. Fundraiser set for youth mission

Creation presentation set

Teen parishioners of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church are headed south on a work mission this summer — and to fund the trip, the church will hold a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday April 17 at the Masonic Lodge at 3893 Main St. Take-outs will be available, and the cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Musical entertainment and basket raffles will also be offered at the dinner.

The Warrensburg youth will be working in this Catholic Heart work mission from July 3 through July 11 alongside more than 300 other teens from all over the U.S. The teens will be cleaning up yards, painting and accomplishing many household and yard chores.

The group needs $4,000 to fund the trip, so its organizers are hoping for a good turnout at the fundraiser.

Those not able to attend the dinner are urged to bring their recyclable bottles and cans to Direct Deposit on Main St. so the bottle refund revenue can be donated to the St. Cecilia's youth. Just mention the youth mission to Direct Deposit employees, and they will assure the group receives the revenue.

Don’t forget the presentation on Creation at First Baptist Church of Warrensburg will host a Creation Meeting on April 15 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The presentation will be given for the first hour, followed by a question-and-answer session complete with refreshments. This presentation is geared for adults and children in grades 7-12. Those with questions may call Jerry Hensler at 494-2050.

Road race for playground fund approaching The Burgher 5K Dash, a new footrace in Warrensburg, has been launched in an effort to raise money to provide equipment for a new Elementary school playground. The race is to be held May 15 beginning at 9:30 a.m. The race course starts at the Elementary School on James St. Cotton T-shirts will be available to the first 250 participants, and awards are to be handed out to the top three finishers in the male and female divisions. A children’s fun-run will be held after the 5K event, and prizes will be given for all children who participate.

The advance entry fee for the adults’ 5K entry is $20, and these discounted entries should be postmarked by April 30.

Race-day entries are $25.

Race registration packets are available in the cafeteria from 7:30 to 9:15 a.m. on race day, or early pickup is available Friday May 14 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the elementary school cafeteria.

Local exhibit reception Friday The Warrensburgh Museum of Local History’s new exhibit portraying 50 years of WCS sports through 1992 will be opening Friday, launched with a wine -and-cheese reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This exhibit of photographs, record books and memorabilia, will highlight high school sports during the period the high school was located on James Street.

Hike for Hope event coming up The American Society for Suicide Prevention will host Hike for Hope/Cody's Climb on Sunday May 23, from 9 a.m. to noon. The hike is up up Prospect Mountain in Lake George.

Check-in time is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Last year, the inaugural Cody's Climb helped educate the community about suicide prevention. Over 150 people, including a large number of students, participated and raised over $12,000 to support community education, research and survivor outreach programs.

This four-mile hike culminates with a ceremony at the summit, including guest speakers, food, raffles, prizes and music by the group Filming Ohio.

Minimum donations of $20 for registration are requested.

During a recent program on covered bridges presented at the Warrensburg Senior Center, Jim Ligon from Thurman points to century-old graffiti carved into a piece from a covered bridge his crew restored. Tree nails would fit through one of the 2-inch holes that can just be seen in the top of the thick board, binding several such boards together in the structure of the bridge.

Library offering presentations LAKE GEORGE — A series of three presentations on wellness will be offered this month at Caldwell-Lake George Library. All three programs are free and begin at 7 p.m.

On Wednesday April 14, the series begins with "Laughter Is the Best Medicine," a program that describes how humor and laughter can help ease stress and improve one's health.

Linda Manzo of the Alzheimer's Association will present the program, funded by a Charles R. Wood Foundation grant.

On Monday April 26, the series continues with "Keeping Fit In Later Years," which describes the importance of staying active, offers tips for safe exercises and limitations on certain activities, and presents guidelines for exercises and achieving cardiovascular fitness. The lecture is presented by a representative of WestonPaxxon Physical Therapy.

On Wednesday April 28 will be "Maintain Your Brain," — a one-hour, interactive discussion about brain-healthy behaviors and how to delay or manage some of the risk factors associated with Alzheimer ’s disease. All are welcome to these programs. Call the library at 668-2528 to register.

‘Chamber Chat’ to feature dinner-theater CEO LAKE GEORGE — The new owner/producer of the Lake George Dinner Theatre will be talking about his enterprise at an upcoming event sponsored by the Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Terry Rabine, a standout in the local theatrical scene is scheduled as guest speaker at the quarterly Chamber Chat Dinner on Tuesday, April 27 at The Holiday Inn Resort on Canada Street in Lake George. The evening will begin at about 5:30 with cocktails followed by dinner which includes a presentation by Rabine, who is likely to offer observations about what he has learned in the past two years going from actor/director to business owner.

He will give the audience a glimpse of theatre operations and offer a synopsis of this summer ’s production of Our Son’s Wedding.

Rabine began his relationship with the Lake George Dinner Theatre in 1970 — fresh out of high school — when he performed in The Fanstasticks production that summer.

Thirty-eight years later, Rabine purchased the theatre company from longtime owner Vicky Eastwood who retired after decades leading the enterprise.

Also slated for the evening is an announcement and description of the Chamber ’s 2010 programs and their focus for the coming year.

Spring cleaning begins with sewers LAKE GEORGE — With balmy weather arriving early, municipal spring cleaning has begun early this year.

With the help of a powerful mobile vacuum on loan from the Lake George Association, municipal employees have started cleaning up storm sewers and catch basins in the Village of Lake George.

The LGA’s “Catch Vac” was brought out of storage and put to use this week, Association project manager Randy Rath said.

“The Catch Vac removes large quantities of sand and grit applied to the roads during the winter that accumulates in the region’s catch basins,” he said.

The Catch Vac also pulls out leaves, debris, bottles, litter and cans from as far down as 100 feet into storm water drains, manholes and catch basins. By providing the Catch Vac for lease to area municipalities, contractors, homeowners and private citizens, the LGA makes this essential spring cleaning

The Catch Vac requires only two operators, and efficiently removes large quantities of litter and polluting debris — allowing the catch basins to function properly so they can capture material before it reaches the Lake, Rath said.

Many storm drains and basins in the local watershed go for years with-

out cleaning because of perceived difficulty or expense, but the Catch Vac makes it relatively simple and inexpensive to take care of these cleaning tasks, he said.

“This is vital to keeping the Lake clean and healthy,” he said.

the Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District and other partner organizations, the LGA has applied for federal funding to acquire a larger truck-sized system that will be shared by organizations across the Lake George Watershed and will more easily capture heavy material.

Historical Association honors McClure for boosting local museum LAKE GEORGE — Maggie McClure, long-time administrator of the Lake George Historical Museum, was honored recently by members of the Lake George Historical Association as they held their annual meeting at the Montcalm Restaurant in Queensbury.

McClure, who retired at the end of 2009, received tribute for more than eight years of service.

During McClure’s tenure, development and enhancement of the museum’s exhibits were a major contribution to the success of the museum, historical association president Alex Parrott said.

Also, McClure expanded the bookstore to become the largest collection of books for sale in the Village of Lake George, he

said.

“The variety of titles and subjects provides the area with an opportunity to learn more of the history of the area as well as the history of our country,” Parrott said, noting that children's titles are included in the collection as well.

“The Board of Trustees is very grateful for Ms. McClure’s dedication and efforts on behalf of the historical association and museum,” he said.

The Association elected the following officers for one year: president, Alex Parrott; vice-president, Bob Benway; recording secretary, Scott Bauberger; corresponding secretary, Marlyn Bray; and treasurer, Kathy Gleason. Also elected to the Board of Trustees for a one-year term

were Sandi Bauberger, Bob Benway, Margaret Edwards, Rosalie Folino, Priscilla Greer, Steve Miller, Gary Moon and Joan West.

The Lake George Historical Association is a non-profit organization devoted to the education and preservation of historical information and artifacts of the Lake George area. The museum is open free to the public during the summer and fall and will open for the 2010 season May 15 with an open house event. The museum is located in the old Warren County Courthouse at 290 Canada St., Lake George. Phone messages may be left at 668-5044.

SUNY Adirondack to host car show

SUNY Adirondack to host open House April 16

QUEENSBURY — A car show is planned at SUNY Adirondack on Sunday April 18 from noon to 4 p.m. in the north parking lot on the Bay Road campus.

The event is free for spectators. Registration fees for those showing cars are $5 for students with valid SUNY Adirondack ID, $7 for college faculty and staff and $10 for the general public. Proceeds from the event will benefit the SUNY Adirondack Activity Board.

The day includes food concessions, a raffle, judging in various car categories and music provided by the Adirondack Broadcasting Association.

The College Activity Board is an on-campus organization that holds events and trips for students and the community.

QUEENSBURY – SUNY Adirondack’s Office of Enrollment Management will host an open house on Friday April 16, from 9 a.m. to noon in the community college’s gymnasium on the Bay Road campus.

The open house is open to high school students and the public. There is no admission charge, but an RSVP to SUNY Adirondack’s admission office at 743-2264 is recommended.

SUNY Adirondack faculty and students will present hands-on demonstrations and interactive presentations.

Programs in the health sciences, business, and technology fields will be featured. The event will showcase a variety of career fields available to students, including psychology, biology, physical education, art, history, music and theater.

Why not Privatize ORDA?

Murphy’s vote didn’t reflect his constituents’ beliefs To the editor: Did Congressman Murphy take his constituents’ opinions when he voted Yes on the health care bill?

The reason this concerns me is after all the ads asking you to call his office with your opinion before he voted, and his Yes vote, that was supposedly the opinion his constituents had conveyed. I called to voice my opinion and was asked my name and zip code. I then said I was opposed to this health care bill and hoped he would vote No. Of course, he voted Yes. After hearing so many people talking about how they were opposed to this health care bill, I called Congressman Murphy’s office to see how his constituents felt. I was stunned when a gentleman in his Glens Falls office said that the information was not available and would not be given out.

I would think in this day of so-called open government that if the consensus was in favor (as he voted), that his office would have definitely wanted this information out. I guess that I am assuming that most people were not in favor of this bill and still Congressman Murphy voted for it.

I see ads on TV already for the Congressman, and wonder who is footing the bill for this expensive advertising. I am extremely disappointed in Congressman Murphy for letting his constituents down in such a tumultuous society, and for him to remember that his constituents vote for him (not the President or his cronies).

I am sorry to say that he will not get my vote.

To the editor: I find it interesting when a proposed 20 percent cut to the $30 million ORDA budget prompts such a cry of foul play.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this the type of “socialism” that conservatives hate so much — government interference in what common sense tells us should be a private business? Vermont got out of the ski business years ago when it sold Killington, and that local economy has seen tremendous growth since.

I can understand the objections of the administrators of ORDA, and it makes me wonder what portion of the budget is administrative. If the ski areas were sold to private interests, they would certainly have jobs for local residents, maybe even more than ORDA is willing or able to afford.

As for the training facilities, why should New York State taxpayers bear the cost of what has become a matter of national pride? Most, if not all other countries pay for this sort of thing nationally, not by the taxpayers of a single state.

Maybe it’s time for the federal government to step up to the plate and we drop the “R” out of ORDA. Rob Barendse Granville

Little justified in opposing Hornbeck nomination

To the editor: I wish to express my congratulations to our U.S. Congressman Scott Murphy for voting for the health care bill.

I realize it was a tough decision for him because of the political makeup of our Congressional district. I was impressed that he read the whole bill carefully before he made his decision, and I liked his reasons for voting for the bill.

It is representatives like Murphy that show there is integrity in some of the people we elect to represent us. It gives one hope that not all of them vote only for political reasons.

To the editor: State Sen. Betty Little is to be commended for standing in opposition to the appointment of Peter Hornbeck as a commissioner of the Adirondack Park Agency. In staking out her opposition to that appointment, she has signaled her dedication to the proposition that the agency must reflect a balance between preservationist and economic development forces on its commission.

As pointed out in your recent editorial, currently at least three of the commissioners have had strong ties to preservationist organizations. The addition of Mr. Hornbeck would increase that number to at least four.

I know Peter Hornbeck by reputation only, and by all accounts he is a well-liked and well-resected resident of the Adirondack; a “classic Adirondacker” as he has been described. That, however, does not make him the right choice for this position. His addition to the commission would tilt the balance of that body ever further toward the preservationist point of view which many residents of the park feel is already over-represented there.

As mentioned in the Journal editorial, Mr. Hornbeck is currently a member of a preservationist organization that has a lawsuit pending against the very agency to which he seeks appointment. There could not be a more blatant conflict of interest. Also, the preservationist organization Protect the Adirondacks, of which Hornbeck is a member, has reportedly expressed opposition to a development project that will at some point come up for review by the APA Commission. Mr. Hornbeck’s presence on the commission would at the very least suggest the existence of bias against those developers.

In opposing this appointment, Little is doing the right thing for the people of the park and she deserves our thanks and support.

•100 Years Ago – April, 1910• A comet the cause of wintry May weather?

I

f it continues to be warm we will have an early spring.

Farmers have their plowing nearly all done and by April 15, 1910. Jay Pasco of South Johnsburgh had 35 bushels of oats sowed. It is early in the season but sweet peas are being planted. It looks now as if this will be a wet season after three dry summers. Grass has a fine start and promises to give us a good hay crop.

Old folks in this area remember back to the days when spring did not come so early. On the third of May, 1857, the tops of all the hills and mountains in sight of Warrensburgh were white with snow that had fallen two weeks before. It was a cold and backward spring and the wise ones attributed the fact to the presence of a comet that was cavorting in space near the earth’s orbit at the time.

A sad but productive life Horace F. Palmer, 39, died April 25, 1910 at the home of his brother, Charles B. Palmer in Poughkeepsie, after a long lingering illness. Born in Warrensburgh in 1871, he received his education at the Warrensburgh Academy and he later attended Albany Law School. He received his degree in 1895.

Palmer married Miss Louise Leland of Schroon Lake and they lived in Warrensburgh for several years before moving in 1903 to Glens Falls. In 1907, because of failing health, Mr. Palmer gave up law and became manager of the New York Telephone Co. Mrs. Palmer died June 2, 1908.

Horace Palmer was an invalid, never physically sturdy and strong, but he courageously fought against the disease that finally killed him at such a young age. He leaves behind a nine-yearold daughter and his father, Beman L. Palmer of Glens Falls.

Undertaker J.A. Woodward of Warrensburgh went to the Riverside railroad station in his funeral car to meet the remains and to convey them to the home of C.T. Leland in Schroon Lake where the funeral will be held.

Minor F. Wells of Fort Ann and Miss Etta Southwick of North Chester were married at the Baptist parsonage in Minerva on April 14, 1910. George E. Perkins was best man and Miss Katie V. Wells was bridesmaid. The groom is a successful farmer.

George May is bringing in some fine slab wood and W.W. Bower’s new piazza floor is completed. Clarence Pratt has installed a compressed air facial douche in his tonsorial (barber shop) parlors.

Walter W. Janser takes a daily spin in his new automobile and he never goes alone but always takes along a friend. Louis Potter serves as his assistant at the drug store. (Note...Walter Janser died just 50 years later, Feb. 18, 1960, and is buried in Troy.)

Elwin Culver had two fingers cut off his left hand by a circular wood saw, April 25, 1910, while working for W.H. Faxon. C.H. Burge brought him to Warrensburgh in his auto car for treatment

Drama at Music Hall beaks records “The Country Minister,” written by Arthur Lewis Tubbs of Warrensburg and presented by clever local actors, broke all records at Music Hall for attendance. This rousing benefit for St. Cecilia’s Church brought in a net sum of $205.80 which has never been equalled.

In the title role, Nelson DuFresne played Rev. Ralph Underwood. Mrs. F.C. Loss was the leading lady and she wore some beautiful dresses. Her costume in the fourth act, a pink satin gown, was especially grand and the ladies in the audience were enthralled. Before her marriage she was Helen Burleigh of Fort Edward and was prominent in amateur theatricals. (Note…Music Hall, before it burned in 1950, was at the north corner of Main and Adirondack streets.)

A woman of unusual qualities

Moving to the country Seth Bennett’s residence property at the corner of Mill and South streets, Warrensburgh, was sold to Nelson Combs who will take possession May 1, 1910 when Mr. Bennett will move to Riparius to take possession of the Asa Porter farm.

Mr. Bennett bought from Henry Ashe a fine work team, harnesses and heavy lumber wagon for use on the farm. Seth has been employed for a long time in the Empire Shirt Factory’s laundry in Warrensburgh and is very much looking forward to the outdoor work and fresh country air.

Chestertown news

Martha Cameron Dayton, 76, died at her home in Decorah, Iowa where she has lived since she moved from this area in 1861.

She was born here April 8, 1834 and married Joel Dayton, who died in 1906. She was a faithful member of the Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her son, Charles and her daughter, Miss Jennie Dayton.

The deceased was a woman of unusual intelligence and penetration which was beset with the pearl of affability, which she retained to the very last, notwithstanding the shadow which came in the sunset of life. She held steadily, quietly, patiently, sweetly on her way to meet her maker. She met her last day full of confidence and fortitude, born in the faith in the word of God.

State Supreme Court convenes The divorce action brought by Aden West against Effie West was dismissed by the Supreme Court of Warren County at their spring term.

In a case to recover damages for timber which was cut upon lands encumbered by a mortgage against George Waters, a verdict of $713 was awarded to Julia G. Morgan and Clara L. Griffin.

Deaths in the news Ona Wakely, infant daughter, aged one year and ten months, died at the Edward Wakely home in Sodom.

Mrs. Helen Wakely of Johnsburgh, 69, died April 14, 1910. She was the mother of John B. Wakely and Mrs. John J. Hewitt, both of Sodom.

Mrs. Harry C. (Hazel K.) Johnson, 23, died April 20, 1910 at the home of Harry Chambers, Lake George. She was the daughter of Hylon B. Chambers. Internment was in the Lake George Cemetery.

Local news roundabout The highways of Warrensburgh are now undergoing their spring repairs. A crew of river log drivers in charge of Ashley Kellogg and Edward Wakeley in camping at Sherwoods on the West (Hudson) River.

Sanford Young is starting a fruit orchard in Warrensburgh by setting out young trees on his farm up the Schroon River above the County Home.

Mrs. Lewis Emerson (the former Ella Fuller Thomas) has sent to her brother-in-law, Albert H. Thomas in Warrensburgh some seed potatoes from California which bugs are not supposed to disturb. Joel Bennett has volunteered to raise them to see if the claim is true. Mrs. Emerson and her son, Robert Thomas have been spending the winter in Lindsay, California and are expected to return home in May, 1910. (Note: Albert Thomas’ ancestral home is now the Senior Citizens house.)

James H. Sturdevan, at his bakery on Elm St., Warrensburgh, has a variety of cakes — including angel, jelly layer, and fruit cakes — ready for daily sale. There are hot rolls every evening.

(Note: The bakery is now Riverside Gallery. After Mr. Sturdevan had passed on, his son-in-la, Judge Loran Hoffman and his second wife, Ida Mae Nestle carried on the fine tradition until recent decades.)

The Adirondack Hotel in Warrensburgh is building a garage on the east side of the hotel barn. Ira Wilsey has the foundation completed. (Note: This was behind the present-day Rite Aid location.) John G. Smith has painted his new barn white. (This “barn” is today located on the corner of Hudson and Woodward streets.)

WARRENSBURG — The musical Evita, presented by 80 students at Warrensburg Central School two weeks ago, featured impressive, emotionpacked acting, energetic dancing and dynamic singing, observers said.

The production was the latest and among the best of 11 annual drama productions directed by Warrensburg vocal instructor Jim Corriveau — musicals that have risen far above the norm for student productions and prompted regional acclaim.

Cyndi Muratori, who for years has been involved in drama productions, discussed elements of the production’s success after the Thursday performance.

“The portrayal of the characters by the principal actors — Jason Power as Che, Ben Nicols as Juan Peron and and Laura Corriveau as Evita — was so emotional and animated,” she said.

Whether it was Power ’s powerful singing as the narrator/antagonist believably portraying the emotions of a dissident, or Corriveau taking on the multiple, evolving aspects of Evita’s character, the acting showed a heartfelt intensity, Muratori and others said.

“Laura showed the different layers of Evita’s personality, including her humanity, her newfound fascination with wealth and her excitement over all the new possibilities life had to offer, and she played the scene of her own death very convincingly,” Muratori said. “Whether she was a spirit observing her own funeral, or crying in despair or pain, or as a hardened woman emerging from trying circumstances,she portrayed her character from her heart.”

That included real tears when Evita’s spirit discovered, by viewing her grieving husband, that he loved her for her attributes, rather than just

“We just fed off each others’ emotions to get into that state,” Laura Corriveau said after Thursday’s performance.

Corriveau praised Nicols’ acting, whether it was belting out a power ballad or crying real tears as she was dying onstage.

“Ben does an amazing job,” she said, noting he used lemon juice to prompt tears if he couldn’t produce them spontaneously.

The principal actors had hundreds of lines, enough to wear their voices out after performances and marathon rehearsals. Corriveau said she and others swigged vinegar and salt-water to keep their voices from giving out.

“This show demanded so much from all of us,” she said.

Corriveau said that the live mini-orchestra her father hired — including some of the best musicians from Albany to Plattsburgh — inspired all onstage to do their very finest.

“With the romantic, live music, you felt the emotions so much more powerfully,” she said.

The production was demanding, as the students spent the 10 days before the show practicing five hours daily after school.

Complete with a set of stairs and three balconies, they were built by Scott Thomas and drama club parents, and painted by students.

Regina Porter, who’s attended dozens of Broadway productions over six decades, said the students’ production of Evita was “phenomenal.”

She burst into tears after the curtain fell on Thursday’s performance, and she immediately bought a ticket to see the next night’s show.

“I was overwhelmed at the performances Jim Corriveau was able to get out of the kids — it was compelling acting, solid singing, and excellent dramatic timing,” she said, adding that Marissa Perrone’s dance elegy was “outstanding.”

“For a small school to produce something like this is truly incredible,” she said.

Jim Corriveau said the crew had aimed to evoke such emotion from the audience.

“Those tears in the audience mean we did our job,” he said. “The kids caught fire and stepped up to the challenge of playing demanding roles they were not accustomed to — portraying people from another culture,” he said.

InBrief Chip plant contractor keynotes at EDC luncheon GLENS FALLS — The prospects and progress of the new GlobalFoundries chip fabrication plant will again take the spotlight as area business leaders gather Thursday April 22 for the annual luncheon of the Warren County Economic Development Corp.

The event, which offers a review economic progress in the region, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Six Flags Great Escape Lodge in Queensbury. The event is open to the public, with advance paid reservations — $45 for EDC members, and $65 for non-members.

The event's keynote speaker is Rick Whitney, President and CEO of M+W U.S., Inc., the designer and general contractor for the chip fab plant now under construction in Malta. In addition to providing an update on the plant site — for which an expansion has recently been proposed — he will share his vision of Tech Valley's future and explain why M+W U.S. is relocating its headquarters from Dallas to the Capital Region.

“The PEF will not reopen its contract with the state,” he said. “Until the state moves decisively to slash the use of costly consultants, PEF will not accept any demand for givebacks and we will continue to work to protect state jobs.”

Paterson is seeking $250 million in concessions from state employees. He blasted union leaders for refusing to negotiate.

“I do not believe that, at a time when more than 300,000 of the hard-working New Yorkers who pay our salaries are out of a job, it is fair to continue the status quo with one segment of the workforce,” Paterson said.

The PEF is among several state employee unions, including the Civil Service Employees Association, that are in the final year of a four-year contract signed under former-Governor Eliot Spitzer.

Albany expects to hand out about $480 million in raises and performance advances in the coming month as part of the agreement.

Paterson said that layoffs may be required if union concessions aren’t made.

CSEA President Dan Donohue rebuked what he said were the Governor ’s “threats.”

“It’s outrageous that in a time when open communication is needed the most, this administration is leaking anonymous threats to the press instead of openly standing by the same bad ideas,” Donohue said.

On Wednesday, Paterson withheld $2.1 billion in school aid on the very day it was supposed to be distributed to districts throughout the state.

A similar move in December, when he withheld $750 million from schools, resulted in a plethora of lawsuits from school administrators and teachers’ unions alike.

Late last year, state employees agreed to comprehensive pension reform that grandfathered current employees but will require new hires to chip in more toward their retirement benefits.

Paterson has pledged to freeze the paychecks of all state legislators until the already-late state budget is completed.

Rabies safety precautions urged

ith the talk of possible cases of rabies in town, people are urged to have their pets inoculated.

The next rabies clinic through Warren county will be on Saturday April 17 at the Chestertown Firehouse on state Rte. 8 from 10 a.m. to noon. A $10 donation is requested for each pet. Dogs should be on leashes and cats and smaller pets in carriers. Those with questions. call 7616580.

To minimize the risk of a life-threatening exposure to rabies, keep your pets and your small children away from all animals until the scare of rabid fox, raccoons, etc. is gone.

Over the fence Gripes that were called in this last week in March were mainly on the big changes in our weather, 60 degrees one day 35 degrees cold and windy the next day. One person started to pack away the winter mittens and longjohns but then had second thoughts.

A few calls came in from folks who were upset over the write up in the Post-Star on the controversy involving the Thurman Emergency Medical Services squad, commenting how much our small community needs our own squad.

Sympathy from the neighborhood goes out to the family of John Cooper who passed away Wednesday March 24.

Mr. Cooper always had a smile for everyone and was wellknown in the area as a school bus driver and in his later years, a school crossing guard.

Filomena Riviello of Garnet Lake Rd. has recently returned from a delightful trip to Sicily, Italy, where she enjoyed the beautiful sights and Italian culture.

As I write this column March 30, Cliff Dureau of Sky High Rd. is improving at Glens Falls Hospital after a gall bladder surgery but he is expected to be home by the time this newspaper is published, and he’ll likely be out buying sugar to feed his Humming birds. He is a volunteer in many programs in Thurman. We all miss you and wish you well, Cliff.

Vopleus benefit turnout appreciated This little newspaper could not hold all the Thank You’s and gratitude that came in from Don and Myra Vopleus and family after the benefit dinner held at the Thurman Town Hall on Saturday March 20. The Vopleus family thanks everyone who in anyway helped in putting this event together, they appreciate all the time and effort that made this possible. Thanks go out to all the county workers, to so many of the Vopleus’ friends who turned out, to their good neighbors and to those who traveled so far to attend. With the economy so bad at this time, the hearts of those who came out were bigger than life and everything was so well organized. They can not thank you all enough for all that was done for their family.

Don is slowly improving, day by day, after the tree accident on Nov. 25. The family wishes to also express thanks for the many cards and prayers and for keeping them in your daily prayers.

Events, activities in the hills

like to meet other mothers in our region are urged to join in activities of the local Mommie & Me play group, which will be gathering Friday April 16, at 9:30 a.m. at the youth building in Athol. A group leader said this week she hopes many mothers will bring a friend along with their kids and help the group get started. There will be a town occupancy tax application/distribution meeting at 10 a.m. Friday April 16 at The Glen Lodge. Family Fun Night at the YMCA will be held Friday April 16 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. This free fun night is open to all families. There will be swimming, crafts, and games offered.

1. Volunteer your time. Get involved with other parents in your community. Help vulnerable children and their families. Start a playgroup.

7. Know what child abuse is. Physical and sexual abuse clearly constitute maltreatment, but so does neglect, or the failure of parents or other caregivers to provide a child with needed food, clothing, and care. Children can also be emotionally abused when they are rejected, berated, or continuously isolated.

2. Discipline your children thoughtfully.

Never discipline your child when you are upset.

Give yourself time to calm down. Remember that discipline is a way to teach your child. Use privileges to encourage good behavior and timeouts to help your child regain control.

8. Know the signs. Unexplained injuries aren’t the only signs of abuse. Depression, fear of a certain adult, difficulty trusting others or making friends, sudden changes in eating or sleeping patterns, inappropriate sexual behavior, poor hygiene, secrecy, and hostility are often signs of family problems and may indicate a child is being neglected or physically, sexually, or emotionally abused.

3. Examine your behavior. Abuse is not just physical. Both words and actions can inflict deep, lasting wounds. Be a nurturing parent. Use your actions to show children and other adults that conflicts can be settled without hitting or yelling.

4. Educate yourself and others. Simple support for children and parents can be the best way to prevent child abuse. After-school activities, parent education classes, mentoring programs, and respite care are some of the many ways to keep children safe from harm.

5. Teach children their rights. When children are taught they are special and have the right to be safe, they are less likely to think abuse is their fault, and more likely to report an offender.

6. Support prevention programs. Too often, intervention occurs only after abuse is reported.

9. Report abuse. If you witness a child being harmed or see evidence of abuse, make a report to your state’s child protective services department or local police. Update on Haiti relief effort The organizers of the locally-based Haiti relief effort thank all who contributed to and participated to benefit the victims of the Haitian earthquake.

This community relief effort, a town-wide evening which featured great socializing as well as generosity, was called “To Haiti with Love.”

As of March 28, a total of $1,744 has been deposited in the Haiti relief account, and the money will help alleviate urgent needs including medical care, water supplies, food and housing.

Supervisors’ showdown approaching on Gaslight buildings

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com QUEENSBURY — The longstanding controversy over whether to demolish or renovate two buildings on the former Gaslight Village property is headed for a conclusion Monday, as county supervisors are scheduled to vote on the buildings’ fate.

For nearly a year, county officials have gone back and forth on the issue, deciding to raze the Opera House and Cavalcade of Cars buildings, then several weeks later endorsing a plan to rehabilitate them. But a final decision deadline, self-imposed by the supervisors, has been set for Monday.

The aim is to get the buildings’ fate settled in coordination with state Department of Transportation’s plans to develop the West Brook environmental park at the former Gaslight site and perhaps take advantage of grant funding offered for demolition.

Those supporting retaining the buildings have argued they’d be useful, when rehabilitated, to host events and trade shows, keep Lake George competitive with other destinations, provide shelter for outdoor events in bad weather, and boost the local economy substantially.

Proponents of demolishing the buildings contend that the buildings detract from the purpose and appearance of the park, would be expensive to rehabilitate and maintain, and were outdated and inappropriate.

Several owners of large venues have argued for demolition, while others, including local Chamber of Commerce executives, tourism officials and owners of vast accommodations, have presented passionate arguments for retaining and refurbishing the structures on a 2.5 acre plot reserved for festivals.

A number of local independent town of Lake George citizens, led by Joanne Gavin and David and Kathy Redpath, have said rehabilitation would not boost the economy and would burden taxpayers.

Belts and hoses: Inspect and replace worn or cracked belts, as well as hoses that are blistered, brittle or too soft. Belts and hoses older than five years, even if they look intact, might need to be replaced.

Winter can be tough on lots of things, including cars and trucks. Cold temperatures, snow and ice, road salt and pothole-causing freeze-thaw cycles put car batteries, tires, brakes and suspensions to the test. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration vehicle crashes due to neglected maintenance cause more than 2,600 deaths a year. Spring is the time to rid vehicles of winter’s sins in time for summer travel.

Lake George Town Supervisor Frank McCoy has favored refurbishing the buildings, as did his predecessor, Lou Tessier, who spent town money and labor on the buildings’ partial rehabilitation.

Redpath and Gavin have clashed with local officials, accusing them of hiding the true cost of the renovation work to date. The town leaders have denied such charges.

Recently, county officials have suggested letting the town of Lake George take over any remaining rehabilitation, or even selling the county’s partial interest in the property.

Two weeks ago, a public hearing on the buildings drew the largest crowd in over a decade, and most favored demolition.

Several dozen people voiced their opinions, and a meeting was set for Monday April 12 for a vote on the issue.

County Gaslight Ad-Hoc Committee Chairman said at the hearing that there would be no public comment aired at the Monday meeting, scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

It’s great to get away after a good start into a spring semester. Whether you’re in college or any other school that offers a spring break, you can always stay refreshed and focused by enjoying a short break. Sure, it’s a time to unwind and let loose, yet it can be a disaster if something goes wrong. Too often people feel indestructible or beyond a disaster due to an excitable or carefree state of mind. This is usually more prevalent in our youth. However,when disaster strikes, it doesn’t care about age or state of mind it just happens. You don’t have to be a genius to be fairly prepared and informed. Just think of everything you can before you leave and be aware of the common pitfalls. Limit chance by being smarter than average.

A good place to start is to make a simple checklist. List everything you can think of that you would need in case of an emergency. This needs to be a separate list of items other than your personal needs. The safety list would possibly include a good first-aid kit, flashlights, portable emergency radio, bottled water reserves, a sharp knife, rubbing alcohol, etc. You may want to modify your checklist depending on the kinds of things you plan on doing during your road trip. You can do a quick google and find some good ideas for your specific needs. Extra vehicle gear like a few gallons of gas, a can of Fix-A-Flat, spare tire, tools, are essential, especially if you plan on driving off the beaten path or on rough terrain. You can avoid some major headaches by simply being prepared. It is always safer to travel in small groups than it is alone or with one other person even. Although two heads are better than one, three heads are better than two and so on. Three or more will also keep arguments at a minimum due to outside point of view. How many people you decide to travel with is of course totally up to you. Keep in mind how comfortable everyone will be during your adventure. If you have a small car it will be more comfortable with fewer people. Make sure at least one person has changed a tire and knows how to do it properly. There are two things to remember when changing

The nuts are nothing short of impossible to get off when the vehicle is off the ground. Also, vehicles can and do fall off jacks, no matter how good they are.

This may seem like common sense but many people forget this crucial part of the process. . An X-shaped tire tool is best. These are much easier to use and give you way more leverage. The other important point is to be aware that the vehicle may fall off the jack if it’s not placed properly on the frame or the weight shifts too much. So remember, don’t get under there when it’s in the air. Follow this rule and you’ll be cool.

Another thing to remember when you’re on spring break this year, is to keep in touch with your travel companions if you decide to split up for a while.You don’t have to check up on each other every five minutes or anything. Cell phones for everyone is the way to go. If someone doesn’t have one let them borrow someone else’s for a while. If there is a couple in your crew, they only really need one phone if they are basically together all the time. Either way make sure everyone knows everyone’s number by heart in case someone loses a phone or write everyone’s number down and put the list in your purse or billfold.

Carry the least amount of valuable stuff with you as possible. Keep the rest locked up in a security box either in your vehicle or hotel room. The same goes for cash. It is much easier to cancel a check card than it is to retrieve stolen cash. If you only have cash,get a prepaid Visa card. Just make sure you know the number to call if you need to cancel it. If you need cash to get in a club or something, carry as little as possible.They will usually let you pay a cover at the bar with a card as well. Whatever you’re planning to do this spring break, try to make it a safe one. Use your head, be prepared, stay calm, and you will be able to relax and have fun on your trip.

The person calling in the report did not identify himself and the dispatcher was unable to re-establish contact with the caller.

Emergency Coordinator Brian LaFlure said that a series of three calls reported the crash

and they originated from a particular mobile radio installed in a car or truck.

The crash supposedly involved a vehicle that had rolled over into a ditch, and that children were trapped inside and needed to be extricated, the caller reported.

County Sheriff ’s Committee Chairman Bill VanNess said that volunteer emergency responders from various agencies spread out in the upcounty region looking for a crash, but none was found.

The bogus call was placed by using a legal two-way radio that had been outfitted to operate on county Emergency Medical Service frequencies, officials said.

County emergency officials called EMS agencies throughout the county, and asked them to account for their members to assure they weren’t involved in a crash, county Sheriff Bud York said Tuesday. All members were accounted for and no accidents were located, he said.

“Volunteers put in enough hours, and when they have to go out to respond to a bogus complaint, it’s troublesome,” he said.

An investigation ensued, and police determined that Nicholas Jones may have been the person making the radio transmission.

York declined to say specifically how they identified Jones as a suspect, although LaFlure said last week the authorities had a

recording of the call and were analyzing it to determine the caller ’s identity.

“All I can say is our investigators did a great job,” York said.

On April 1, police interviewed Jones and he admitted to making the transmissions, York said. Jones told police that he was under the influence of marijuana at the time and was not thinking clearly, authorities said. Jones is not presently affiliated with any area fire of EMS agency.

York said Tuesday that county communications officials were taking steps to upgrade the radio system so calls could be only received from authorized sources and could be traced to a particular vehicle and location. Tuesday, County Sheriff ’s Office Communications Supervisor and LaFlure were busy developing these plans, York said.
