ALBANY — The state Department of Environmental Conservation says the deer take was up slightly in 2010 and the bear harvest was “strong.”

The numbers for last year were released Monday by DEC Commissioner Joe Martens.

In 2010, hunters harvested just over 230,000 deer in New York, up about 3 percent from 2009.

Additionally, some 16,000 junior hunters took advantage of big game hunting opportunities, taking in approximately 4,900 deer.

Meanwhile, bear harvest numbers were “strong” in 2010, with hunters statewide taking more than 1,060 bears.

Commissioner Martens says deer and bear hunters play a “crucial role” which benefits all New Yorkers. According to Martens, hunters help maintain deer numbers at levels that are “ecologically and socially appropriate.”

“We appreciate their participation,” he said.

Deal keeps event in Lake George for 2011

LAKE GEORGE — The founding Ironman Lake Placid Ironman promoter is bringing his newest event, Centurion Cycling, to Lake George in 2012, and marketing efforts were officially launched on March 24.

Originally slated for a June 2011 opening, Centurion Cycling is now committed to holding a three-day series of cycling races and family-oriented events in and around Lake George June 22-24, 2012.

There will be a Friday night Hill Climb, a 25-mile ride and Kid’s Ride on Saturday, and the 50- and 100-mile races on Sunday, according to a Centurion Cycling press release.

As the CEO of Ironman North America, now called North America Sports, Fraser brought Ironman to Lake Placid in 1999.

Now he is operating the Centurion Cycling event series, which debuted in Colorado, Wisconsin and Ontario in 2010. Two races — Wisconsin and Ontario — will be held in 2011, and the New York event (Lake George) will debut in 2012.

Centurion Cycling’s mantra is “Racers Race, Riders Ride,” and race officials said they “will strive to draw all types of cyclists to Centurion New York to enjoy the picturesque roads and mountain scenery of the Adirondacks.”

Bolton Central School will hold its annual pre-kindergarten and new kindergarten student registration from 8:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5.

All children residing in the district, who will be 4 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2011, are eligible to enroll in the September 2011 prekindergarten class. BCS Drama Club to perform ‘Oh Kay!’

This year’s musical, “Oh, Kay!” by George and Ira Gershwin, will be presented at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9 at the Bolton Central School gymnasium. Theese student actors are, from left, Rosie Denne, Valerie Jensen, Mark Dawson, Katie Dimick and Melanie Bishop.

This year ’s musical, “Oh, Kay!” by George and Ira Gershwin, will be presented at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9 at the Bolton Central School gymnasium. Admission is $5.

The romantic comedy includes the song, “Someone to Watch Over Me,” a jazz standard that has been performed by numerous artists since its debut in this show in 1926.

The show takes place in the mansion of Jimmy Winters, who has been away for a long time. While he was away bootleggers used his cellar to hide alcohol. When Jimmy returns he has his new bride with him, but soon falls in love with Kay, who is the sister of one of the bootleggers.

“Craziness ensues,” quipped Mr. Paul Weick, a secondary social studies teacher at BCS who also

wears the Drama Club director hat. ”I first got the idea for doing this type of show after last year ’s Great Gatsby Day. I noticed how students really enjoyed dressing up in Roaring 20s style.

So I looked for a musical that took place in the 1920s, which was the time of prohibition. It’s been a history lesson for the students and me.

I’ve learned things, too, in doing research on the show.”

WCS wrestling team holds awards banquet

WARRENSBURG — The Warrensburg High School Wrestling program bestowed several awards at its annual banquet, which was held Sunday, March 20 at Ridin’ Hy Ranch in conjunction with a day filled with recreational activities for the athletes on the team.

About 90 people attended the banquet, which was preceded by a day full of skiing, sledding, swimming, horseback riding, snow-tubing, and snowmobiling, WCS Wrestling Coach Mark Trapasso said.

At the banquet, it was announced that Warrensburg High School Junior Lucas Nelson, who won a Class D Section II championship, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler.

“Luke is our team captain, and he’s a great athlete,” Trapasso said. “Hopefully, he will lead our team next year.”

The 2011 Sportsmanship Award for Wrestling went to Desmond Allen, who the coaches said had displayed great attitude all year while boosting his skills.

The Most Improved award was given to Jon Vaisey, a lightweight who concentrated on boosting his strength and skills this year, and won a Class D championship, Trapasso said.

A special Coaches Award went to Nick Nedelcu, who Trapasso said “outworks everybody on the team.”

On the Modified level, the Sportsmanship award went to Blake Vaisey, and Most Improved was awarded to Rogers McLaughlin.

Trapasso expressed appreciation for the Beadnell family for hosting the fun day and annual banquet. He noted

Several local businesses donated food to serve breakfast and lunch, as well as several items for a basket raffle. Thanks to our supportive community, the Committee was able to raise $1,330 towards the playground fund.

that Andy and Susan Beadnell, and their children Todd, Tim and Troy — who were all standout local wrestlers have all been very supportive of the team and deserve a large measure of thanks, along with their spouses.

Youth Wrestling tournament deemed a success The annual Warrensburg Youth Wrestling Tournament was held Saturday, March 19, and it drew about 140 wrestlers from a wide region, according to Trapasso and his assistant, Scott McKenna. The wrestlers, ages 4 through 13, hailed from as far away as Whitehall, Broadalbin and Cobleskill, McKenna said.

McKenna noted that the “large majority” of the members of the Warrensburg Youth wrestling program wrestled in the tournament, and they fared well.

“In future years, Warrensburg will be tough to beat,” he said. “We’ve got some talented young athletes gaining a lot of skills and we have a deep roster.”

Trapasso said that the tournament action was overseen by accredited high school officials, and they kept competition running smoothly.

He also noted that the event, complete with extensive food concessions, was staffed with a good number of WVCS alumni wrestlers, and parents of present wrestlers, and their help was much appreciated.

Volunteers are needed at the National Museum of Dance & Hall of Fame, located at 99 South Broadway in the beautiful Saratoga Spa State Park. Volunteers are needed for programs, lectures, events, and exhibits as well as day-to-day operations. The museum is the only institution in the United States devoted exclusively to dance. 2nd Annual Burgher Dash The Warrensburg Elementary School Playground Committee will host its 2nd annual 5K Burgher Dash on Saturday, May 14, starting at 9:30 a.m.

All student participants will receive a participant award. Cotton T-shirts to the first 125 participants. Awards are given to the top three finishers (male and female). In an e-mail sent later in the day, Americade Vice President Christian Dutcher said his “advisors” would review the papers and issue “a formal release of acceptance.” That happened on March 29.

“We’d like to thank our political representatives involved with this matter, Sen. Little, Assemblywoman Sayward, Warren County Chairman Stec, Town of Lake George Supervisor McCoy and Lake George Mayor Blais, as well as DEC Commissioner Martens for all their efforts,” Christian Dutcher said in the March 25 e-mail. “We’re pleased that we were able to come together as a group to find a resolution.”

However, all the credit should not be given to the DEC and Warren County alone, he asserted.

“Concessions were made by all parties in order to reach resolution on the matter,” Christian Dutcher said March 29.

“Americade will provide parking lot control and staffing, as well as reimburse Warren County Sheriff ’s Department for pedestrian and traffic control at the nearby crosswalk formerly staffed by DEC.”

On March 25, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens announced that the state had formed a partnership with Warren County that would allow Americade to again use the Lake George Beach, Battlefield Park and Prospect Mountain Day Use Areas for the June 2011 event.

The agreement will lead to the issuance of a “temporary revocable permit” allowing Americade to use the stateowned lands in the village and town of Lake George.

Americade founder Bill Dutcher had asked the state to lower the permit price from the proposed amount of $82,000 to $50,000, or else he may move the event to Massachusetts.

And that’s exactly what the state did in its new agreement.

The permit price is now $50,000. It cannot be free because the DEC has to recoup costs in labor before, during and after the event and parking fees at the day-use areas, said DEC spokesperson Michael Bopp in a March 25 phone interview.

“Our goal was always to recover our costs,” Bopp said. “It should not be on the taxpayers’ purse.”

The DEC has claimed thousands of dollars of expenses associated with Americade, assertions that others, including Americade organizers, have contended.

“We’re trying to responsibly manage the state lands,” Bopp said in a phone interview March 28, defending the DEC’s permit fee for Americade.

The bulk of the vendors are usually located in Lake George’s Million Dollar Beach parking lot, a state facility that is operated by the DEC. Americade also hosts a barbecue and party atop Prospect Mountain.

The DEC charges parking fees to the public for its day-use areas throughout the state. In the Lake George region, the fees are: $6 per car at areas where there are no swimming facilities; $8 per car at swimming areas where life guards are on duty; $4 per motorcycle; $8 per car to park at Lake George Beach or $6 per car after 5 p.m.; and $8 per car and $40 per bus at Prospect Mountain.

This year ’s deal would be similar to the one in 2010 in which Americade pays entrance fees on behalf of the partic-

ipants under the terms of the DEC permit.

Help from Warren County The DEC has traditionally provided Environmental Conservation Officers to help with traffic control at Americade.

In announcing the agreement, Bopp said the state will still help this year, but not as much as in the past because the Warren County Sheriff ’s Office will now provide most of the law enforcement help. And that enticed the DEC to lower its permit fee for this year.

“Americade is of vital economic importance to Warren County and the surrounding communities and we have all benefitted from the responsiveness of DEC and its cooperation to secure Americade’s continued presence in Lake George for years to come,” Dan Stec, Queensbury town supervisor and chairman of the Warren County Board of Supervisors, said in the March 25 DEC press release.

Americade reaction The March 25 announcement from the DEC was a little premature. When contacted in the afternoon on March 25, Americade’s Bill Dutcher said his organization and the DEC only had a “tacit understanding” as to the permit’s details.

Praise for the agreement In the meantime, state officials lauded the agreement in the DEC’s prepared statement.

“This agreement demonstrates our commitment to making state facilities an important part of the tourism economy in the Lake George region,” Martens said. “We worked very hard to create a partnership between our Department and Americade and believe this framework can serve as a model in future years. This resolution would not have been possible without the efforts of Senator Little, Assemblywoman Sayward and Supervisor Stec and we appreciate their cooperation and support.”

Sen. Betty Little sees Americade as a “tremendous economic driver” that attracts thousands of people to her district each year, helping the tourist industry prior to the busy summer season.

“Many area businesses depend on this boost of activity, so resolving this cost issue was very important to me,” Little said. “Working with the DEC, an agreement has been reached that is fair and appropriate and a good example of what can be achieved when we partner.”

Americade will be held from June 7 to 11 in 2011 and is billed as “the world’s largest multi-brand motorcycle touring rally.” It attracts more than 50,000 visitors each year.

LAKE GEORGE — It started in Lake George, and now it’s going to Las Vegas.

In 2003, Jason Sherry attended a meeting hosted by the village of Lake George, where two Elvis tribute artists (impersonators) told the gathered crowd about a huge event held in Collingwood, Ontario that draws over 30,000 Elvis fans to a small town just like Lake George.

While the LakeGeorge.com Elvis Festival (now in its eighth year of production) has not yet attracted 30,000 spectators, it has fast become one of the Lake George Region’s cornerstone events.

The annual four-day event brings over 4,000 spectators to Lake George and the surrounding community.

Sherry’s company, Sherry Management, LLC took over the event from the group of Lake George area businesspersons who had been running it in time for the 2007 festival.

“The group was getting worn out,” Sherry said. “It’s hard to produce an event of this calibre year in and year out without a paid staff.”

After running the event successfully for a few years, the company set its site on expansion.

“People kept asking us what other types

of festivals we could produce,” he said. “After months of deliberation we came up with the idea of producing similar Elvis Festivals in other locales around the country.”

Their first Elvis venture outside of Lake George was the New England Elvis Festival, which was first held in Manchester, N.H. in 2009. Since then, Sherry Management, LLC has added a new Elvis Festival to their schedule each year with the Pocono Mountains Elvis Festival being introduced in 2010 and the new Las Vegas Elvis Festival scheduled to be held for the first time this July.

The event will be held at the legendary Las Vegas Hilton in the room where Elvis performed during his sold-out run in Las Vegas.

Unlike the other three Elvis Festivals, this festival is a co-production of Sherry Management, LLC and two partners, Ambassador Enterprises, Inc and John Stuart Productions, Inc. Together, Ambassador and Stuart produced an Elvis event called Heart of the King in Las Vegas in 2010. The Las Vegas Elvis Fest is an evolution of that event.

Thirty-seven years ago, when my husband and I moved from New York City to the southeastern Adirondacks, we had no idea of the radical vision of environmental groups for theregion.

We soon learned that the groups use the Legislature against the Adirondack people.

We have no family heritage in the region, but we see the local heritage being wiped out. We h ave s pent mu ch o f o ur l ife w orking t o strengthen the future of the communities spread over the twelve-county, six million acre expanse.

We are still shocked and disheartened by the grandiose plans of radical environmentalists, which, if not checked, will virtually depopulate the region except for tiny service centers.

The ambitions of the radical environmental g roups r each i nto t his y ear’s proposed executive budget. Within the $70 million allocated for “Open Space Protection” is over $50 million to acquire over 75,000 acres of private land now held by The Nature Conservancy.

This b udget i tem i ncludes a bout $ 41 million to buy over 60,000 acres of productive timber land formerly owned by the Finch Pruyn paper manufacturing company . This recordbreaking acquisition would lead to the land being converted to “forever wild” Forest Preserve. This misuse of scarce taxpayer dollars would mean that almost 100 square miles of prime timber land would never be logged again and that the beloved hunting camps where many families have enjoyed their time together would be erased.

Logging roads would be closed and access by almost al l of the public would be impossible. Instead of being nationally acclaimed for its biodiversity and sustained logging (to supply the Finch Pruyn mill in Glens Falls from twenty years before the Forest Preserve was established in 1885), the forest would ultimately revert to mainly a dark, lonely expanse with little biodiversity and where deer would no longer flourish.

There is no environmentally defensible purpose to acquire the land, because relegating the sustainably logged land to unmanaged deep forest will result in a loss of biodiversity and a permanent hazard of intense fires. In sum, the drive to carry out this acquisition is both ecological idiocy and a direct assault on the delicate economies of communities in the

Area should benefit from power line

T

he year was 1998, and our managing editor was floating placidly on Schroon Lake with his family, while the fireworks display they watched reflected brightly off the water like a mirror. He decided to moor the boat near the Word of Life Island and was shocked by what he found underwater.

Afterward, he reached for the anchor rope that held the boat in place, but it would not budge from the lake’s floor.

“I wasn’t sure if I had caught a log, or what, so I started to put my back into it and it slowly, painstakingly made its way up,” he recalled.

What the family saw rise to the surface attached to the anchor was no log. Instead, it was a six-inch thick green cable with the words “Danger: High Voltage” printed on the side.

It was the electricity source feeding the island — which had been long ago buried on the lake bottom by the power company.

Are recreational users of Lake Champlain in for a similar fate some day soon?

A proposal is now in the approval phase that would lay two five-inch power lines underwater along the length of Lake Champlain, the Champlain Canal and Hudson River.

The concept is to feed New York City with “clean, renewable power” from Montreal to offset a growing demand there and help lower some of the highest electricity rates in the country.

But at what cost to the North Country?

The company charged with building the line — Canadian-based Transmission Developers Inc. (TDI) — says the environmental impacts will be minimal.

They say the line will be monitored by a special fiber-optic coating that will automatically switch the power off should the line become untangled or penetrated.

They say the electro-magnetic field surrounding the 1,000-Megawatt line (that is 100 times more powerful than the one that feeds Word of Life Island) will have no detriment to fish or plant life.

Let’s face it. This power line is unprecedented. It would be the largest undertaking of its kind in the region and it deserves tremendous scrutiny

before utility companies are allowed to reap the financial rewards from its existence in our waterways.

And, as Mike Winslow of the Lake Champlain Committee pointed out, the people of this region should see more of a benefit than watching a cable reel boat float by from Ballard Park in Westport.

An economic analysis filed on behalf of the promoter to the New York Public Service Commission in July 2010 estimates that the projected line would save New York customers $8.1 billion on their electricity bills over the first 10 years of operations, between 2015 and 2024.

If that’s truly the case, than utility companies surely stand to gain many times that amount. Certainly they will have the ability to afford cleanup efforts in the areas where they will benefit from using the region’s natural resources for their personal gain, both before and after they are here.

While it is nice that our neighbors to the south will benefit from this project, the reality is it will do nothing for the local population.

TDI says it will provide annual financial assistance for environmental projects in the Lake Champlain Basin.

But that assistance needs to be appreciable and it needs to be long-lasting.

Moreover, part of the approval should be a requirement that money be put away to monitor, repair or even remove the line should it be deemed in any way an environmental hazard.

Residents would have been better served if officials had as much foresight with past environmental disasters such as the PCB pollution in the Hudson River, instead of listening to politicians whose jobs are too intrinsically linked to deep-pocketed business interests.

Let’s think very hard before we leave another environmental anchor in our lake for future generations to deal with.

We’ve had enough of that.

Mercury standard will reverse damage to NY lakes (This guest viewpoint is from the Adirondack Mountain Club. It was originally sent as a press release.)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed mercury standards for power plants are a major step in reversing the contamination of New York’s lakes, particularly in the Adirondacks.

In response to a court-ordered deadline, the EPA has proposed the firstever national standards for mercury, arsenic and other toxic air pollution from power plants. The new standards would require many power plants to install state-of-the-art pollution control technologies to cut harmful emissions of mercury, arsenic, chromium, nickel and gases that cause acid rain and smog.

“After 20 years of uncertainty, the federal government will now have the authority to regulate these toxic chemicals that have had such a devastating impact on the Adirondacks, Catskills and other natural areas,” said Neil Woodworth, executive director of the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK).

“Because of the technology required to meet this standard, it will not only cut mercury contamination by 91 percent, it will also reduce fine particulate mat-

ter, low-level ozone and acidic precipitation.”

The proposed standard is the result of a 2008 U.S. Court of Appeals decision that threw out EPA’s Clean Air Mercury Rule (CAMR), a cap-andtrade program that allowed polluters to buy pollution credits and emit mercury without pollution controls. CAMR resulted in regional mercury “hot spots,” and recent studies have linked coal-fired power plants to mercury hot spots in the Adirondacks and Catskills.

The appeals court ruled that CAMR conflicted with the clear language of the federal Clean Air Act, which requires each power plant to install the best pollution-control technology available to reduce mercury emissions.

The lawsuit was brought by a coalition of national health and environmental organizations. ADK was the only New York environmental group to participate in the lawsuit.

The Adirondacks and Catskills are downwind of numerous coal-burning power plants, whose mercury emissions contribute significantly to mercury pollution in these regions. A 2007 independent study by the Charles Driscoll and the Hubbard Brook Research Foundation estimated that mercury emissions from U.S. coal-fired

power plants are responsible for 40 percent to 65 percent of mercury deposition in the Northeast.

Current levels of mercury deposition in the Northeast are four to six times higher than the levels recorded in 1900.

Ninety-six percent of the lakes in the Adirondack region and 40 percent of the lakes in New Hampshire and Vermont exceed the recommended EPA action level for methyl mercury in fish.

Because of high mercury levels in fish from a number of reservoirs in the Catskills, state health officials have warned that infants, children under 15 and women of childbearing age should not eat any fish from these reservoirs.

Mercury is also present in two-thirds of Adirondack loons at levels that negatively impact their reproductive capacity, posing a significant risk to their survival.

100 Years Ago - April 1911 Spring, where art thou?

April tears have been frozen and her smiles are chilly. Snow is still on the ground and the measles are making a clean sweep of Johnsburgh Corners. Everyone who has not had them is taking their turn. Kate Russell has them and over in North Caldwell there are seven new cases in the family of Charles Prosser and two of them have developed pneumonia.

The Hudson River spring log drive consisting of 30 men and four teams, in charge of Ashley T. Kellogg of Glens Falls, starts Tuesday, April 18, 1911 at Thurman Station and will go to the Big Boom in Glens Falls.

The logs left in the river from last year will be driven down to the Glens Falls mills preliminary to the regular drive which starts from the upper waters.

Hot lead flying Victoria Minnucci, who was implicated in the shooting of John Altierri a few days ago was released Thursday, March 30, 1911 in Glens Falls City Court as there was not enough evidence to hold him, but Louis Miller, who it was proven did the shooting, was held to await the action of the Grand Jury. He furnished $500 bail and will plead self-defense.

Prominent lady dies Betsey Coolidge Dickinson, 76, wife of Capt. M.N. Dickinson of Warrensburgh, died Sunday, March 26, 1911 after a period of nearly four years of failing health. The end came quickly after she was obliged to give up the battle against advancing years.

Mrs. Dickinson was born on Coolidge Hill in the town of Bolton and is connected with the prominent Glens Falls families of that name. On July 1, 1858 she married the captain and they moved to Warrensburgh. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Grace Cordelia Somerville and a son, Lester Coolidge Dickinson, both of Warrensburgh.

Burial was in the Warrensburgh Cemetery.

(Note … Captain Myron Nelson Dickinson, born in 1829 was a legend in his own time in Warrensburgh. Volumes could be written about his adventure-filled life.)

Glens Falls news The Glens Falls Board of Public Safety has decided that no more wooden buildings may be erected within the fire limits of the city.

In other news, Old Paddy, for 17 years one of the best fire horses in Glens Falls is to be retired as the city has purchased a new team from Bibbey & Ferguson. One peculiar habit Paddy has is that of chewing tobacco and will stick his nose into anyone’s pocket to get at it.

Popular town leader dies John Donnelly, 50, a prominent resident of Minerva, died of typhoid pneumonia on Thursday, March 30, 1911 after an illness of two weeks. He was elected supervisor of his town at the recent election. He is survived by a widow and one daughter, May Donnelly.

There were 110 teams of horses in his funeral possession and interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Supervisors vote thumbs down The Warren County Board of Supervisors convened at Lake George for their quarterly meeting. At the session they defeated a resolution to appropriate $10,000 for the purchase of the property of Dr. Lee Somerville at North Creek for a county tuberculosis hospital. Supervisor Alfred J. Pitcher of Warrensburgh, however, did vote for it. The only person willing to have the hospital established in his town was Supervisor Thomas Goodman of Thurman. The possibility of a county hospital for patients suffering from tuberculosis in Warren County is now very remote.

I also overheard and saw what I assumed were professional lobbyists, various union groups, school children and everyday citizens who looked like they were bussed in to perhaps represent those who might be affected by pending issues. Some wore names tags, group representation stickers or themed identical T-shirts. Others carried signs, and still others were passing out position fliers. Overall, there was a complete mix of the state’s melting pot.

As we waited to see some Assembly and Senate members, you could hear through the walls both happy and certainly more than a few unhappy constituents who — in heated language — made their concerns known. Some of the officials we spoke with were engaging, some entertaining and others not very engaged at all.

I observed many different emotions during my day’s stay in Albany. As I drove home and reflected on what I had heard and observed, it dawned on me that nobody ex-

pressed the emotion of fear. I came away with the feeling that no one there seemed overly distraught about the many financial problems facing the state. It was more a sense of business as usual, problems to face, positions to defend, turf to protect, but I never saw the face of fear. Was the reason because we have too many safety nets in our society?

Or is it because folks, as they look at the massive state budget, figure if they argue, scream and threaten loud enough, they’ll get what they want? You can't blame them; those tactics have worked in the past.

I did sense that the winds of change are blowing in Albany. We can only hope our elected officials have the backbone and courage (because they sure don't have the money) to stand up to those who want to maintain the status quo. If my business were in debt comparable to the state of New York, I know many things would be handled differently than they are today. Unfortunately, I did not sense that the movers and shakers at the state capitol are in a “crisis management mode” yet. At least many seem to be aware that a day of reckoning is on the horizon.

Please note that the Thurman town landfill has been closed temporarily so construction and demolition debris can be rearranged to meet state specifications, Thurman Town Clerk Cindy Hyde said.

All of our area fishing enthusiasts will either be out casting a line into the water — or wishing they were — on April 1 for the opening day of fishing season in New York State.

Here's assuming those fish won't still be under the ice!

Our ground hog is still trying to dig out from under all the snow, so I’m thinking he might not see his shadow until early June.

Flocks of geese were seen headed north about mid-March about a week ago when our weather was warmer. Let’s hope it warms up again and spring really arrives!

Amber Grace of Warrensburg recently spent a week with her mother, Ruth Wadsworth in El Paso, Texas. Ruth had been visiting the Warrensburg area in February, but because of bad weather didn’t get around to see everyone, we hear.

Thanks to all for the visits, cards and prayers during my recent hospitalization. Remember, such thoughtful actions mean a lot to so many of us.

Maple festivities tapped out

denpubs@denpubs.com THURMAN — The three-week celebration of spring in Thurman began and ended with finger-numbing days, but according to participants, the public turned out in droves.

“The crowds were great and we received a ton of positive comments about our new sugarhouse,” said Randy Galusha, co-owner of Toad Hill Maple Farm said. “It certainly felt good to see how much people appreciated what we did over the past year.”

Wini Martin, of Martin’s Lumber, echoed Galusha’s comments when she spoke about the guests who visited their sawmill and craft operation.

“We had a really great day — a constant stream and they are all so nice and enjoy what and who we are,” Martin said. “Their enthusiasm makes us feel good.”

She went on to tell how many visitors had been there in past years and returned.

Jeff Green, of Loon Lake, visited with his family and posted a lengthy and enthusiastic report about their tour.

He must have taken notes while his wife, Anita, snapped pictures.

“We really enjoyed the day!” Green said. “It was great to get out in the fresh Adirondack air. The beautiful scenery Thurman has to offer is awesome. We learned a lot about the maple industry and the lumber milling. The people, including the tour guides, were very friendly and hospitable. We definitely recommend that you and your family attend one of Thurman’s Maple Weekends.”

thom@denpubs.com THURMAN — The Thurman Emergency squad has reorganized, and the Thurman Town Board is meeting with the agency’s new officers at the squad’s request to discuss issues about the services they provide, according to town officials.

The two entities will meet at 6 p.m.

Monday, April 4, and the meeting is open to the public, town Supervisor Evelyn Wood said Monday, March 28.

Thurman Emergency Medical Services’ new president, in office about a month, said Monday night she didn’t want to discuss details about the reorganization, the new officers, or the upcoming meeting.

“It hasn’t all been settled yet — it’s in transition,” she said.

Adam Styers is the new captain of the squad.

Former president of the squad Jim DeSourdy said Monday night that Coulard, a new member of the agency in the past six months, asked him at a recent meeting to step down from his post about a month ago, and he responded by resigning. He said Coulard had told him he should have given the emergency services contract with the town more thorough review with the squad’s board of directors, a charge he disputes.

The contract that the Town Board signed recently calls for the squad to respond to 80 percent of Basic Life Support calls and not to charge patients for services rendered.

Until about six months ago, Coulard was the president of the Warrensburg Emergency Squad, which had been negotiating with the Thurman Town Board to provide emergency services

instead of the Thurman squad. The Warrrensburg squad bills its patients, and Desourdy said Coulard was in favor of billing.

“I told Jean I thought the Thurman Board would pull the plug on us if we billed,” he said.

Desourdy also said several other members had left the squad about the same time he resigned — and since then, the squad’s response rate has dropped substantially.

Wood said she is now gathering information about the response rate from the county dispatching administration.

DeSourdy said he had worked hard on behalf of the community to make sure the local squad survived, and he was disappointed in how the situation was handled.

“I fought hard for the squad and a contract with the town, and I feel it’s a slap in the face to be asked to step down,” he said.

Students provide a local Adirondack lesson

ecently, while crossing a log that spans a brook in my back yard, I experienced an epiphany of sorts.

Balanced on that birch, I realized that while sharing adventures in natural settings, there will always be opportunities for building bridges.

These spans may be as insignificant as a simple link between the opposite sides of a small mounain stream, or as powerful as the forest-forged connections between family members and small mountains, open fields and old friends.

This connection, which serves as a reattachement to our own nature, is a key component of outdoor travel, adventure and discovery. It also serves as one of the most important links to connect the various North Country communities with an unrivaled commonality.

As I crossed over the brook, I was not just getting to the other side; I was recapturing a unique sense of adventure

and discovery that has happily haunted me since my youngest days. It was an experience that provided me with a sense of place; where I knew I belonged.

This same sense of belonging was readily apparent last week at The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, when I visited to attend the second annual Adirondack Day. It is an event that was developed to allow students from local school districts an opportunity to showcase and share their accomplishments in achieving academic ‘challenges’ designed by the Adirondack Curriculum Project,(ACP).

The ACP was formed in 2003 by a group of individual educators, schools, businesses and organizations, with the purpose of fostering increased public understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of the Adirondack region's natural and cul-

tural resources.

The organization hosts a Web site which offers a long list of projects or ‘Challenges’ that permit schools to incorporate aspects of the region’s history into the educational process, at www.adkcurriculumproject.org, In 2005, the NYS Conservation Council selected the ACP for their annual "Conservation Education Organization" Award for their continuing efforts to bring the Northern Forest into the classroom.

Last week, students and teachers hailing from Tupper Lake, Newcomb, Indian Lake and Potsdam school districts traveled to Tupper Lake to present their Adirondack Challenge projects. Their efforts included original poetry inspired by Adirondack art, a presentation about Adirondack animals, a reader's theatre presentation, a display about Adirondack habitats, artwork created out of leaves,

I peaked out the window at the sun setting behind my fully exposed boat, and slowly pulled my soggy boots back on.

Trudging back out into the cold to cover the boat for the second time this winter, all I could think about was knocking out one of Tom’s pearly whites. I know the poor guy can’t control the weather — but does he have to be so dang perky about it?

pril 1 trout season opener? More like a May 1 opener.

With the mercury barely breaking the freezing point as I write this and more frigid weather in the forecast, it appears the opening of this year ’s trout season is more symbolic than anything else.

What a difference a year makes.

Last year at this time we were hitting the links and trolling open water on back ponds. This year I’d need snowshoes to get to the Radisson behind my garage.

In the meantime, I made the mistake of uncovering my big boat last weekend. I bought a newer 24-footer to chase lakers and salmon with but have yet to outfit it with the equipment I salvaged from my old boat — the Laker Taker II. So, I decided to get a jump on that tedious task and accomplished a great deal last Sunday before crashing in my recliner next to the woodstove with a can of Genessee river water.

But before I could enjoy the first sip, smiling Tom the evereffervescent weatherman came on the tube and happily predicted half a foot of snow on the horizon.

Infamous Ticonderoga outdoorsman and marathoner Richard Johndrown — better known in hunting circles as SilverrrrrrrrrrrBulletttttttttttttt — dropped me a line recently to let me know he had the pleasure of scoring Robert Lavergne’s 20-point buck shot last season.

For those who may have missed it, I wrote a column in November about this buck, which Lavergne shot Nov. 6 on land along the Cedar River outside Indian Lake.

The deer had become quite well known in the area, by residents who had spotted him wandering near town after deer season. He was easily identified by a split he had in one ear, presumably from fighting for dominance. His shed antlers had also been found, and local hunters were aware of the significant antler growth he possessed.

Johndrow, who serves as measurer chairman for the New York State Big Buck Club, Lavergne’s non-typical sported 20 countable points with 10 non-typical points totaling 37 1/8 inches resulting in a final score of 179 2/8.

The gross score of the rack is 191-1/8. That is enough to make it the fifth largest non-typical on record taken in Essex County.

Other notable racks from last season included a 16-point taken by Dave Edwards in Cortland County. The buck net scored 182-0 and grossed 206-0. It is the fourth largest typical buck ever shot in New York. The largest non-typical buck measured this year is a 15-pointer taken by Brandon Peters in Niagara County, Johndrow said. That buck net scored 194-0 with a gross score of 203.

Hunters have until May 1 to have their bucks scored for inclusion in the New York State Big Buck Club.

Not only did these efforts meet or exceed New York State Board of Education Standards, the students discovered the unique commonality they all share in the culture of the Adirondacks. In a similar manner, they all crossed an Adirondack creek on the same log bridge.

Funded by the Pearsall Foundation, the event was more than just a fun-filled day of learning, it provided an opportunity for the students to broaden their horizons. It also allowed them to discover the common thread that is woven into a tapestry of local culture that they all share.

Seniors from Newcomb joined second graders from Tupper Lake as part of a North Country culture that has endured for centuries before them, and if their combined energy and enthusiasm is any indication; it is a culture that will exist well beyond their time.

Although I consider myself a conservationist, I am also a preservationist, but not in the common sense of the word.

I believe in preserving our way of life, the heritage of outdoor sporting pursuits and the numerous North County traditions that make our region unique.

These traditions, which include a love of the outdoors, respect for nature and an overwhelming sense of belonging, are also regularly amplified by the seasons.

We suffer the similar sting of winter and bleed equal pints of blood during blackfly season. We travel the same rutted roads in mud season and enjoy the same sweet summer waters.

But it isn’t just hardships that serve to bring us together, rather it is the many simple pleasures of life in the North Woods, where we know and appreciate our neighbors and the surrounding woods and waters with equal enthusiasm.

These are just of few of the common threads that I discovered as students from Potsdam joined with those from Indian Lake, Newcomb and Tupper to sing about the Adirondacks.

Their voices formed a bridge that continues to span the generations. It offered a combined note that served to connect the many special places that each of them calls home.

Regardless of where travels will take them, eventually this will always be their home.

In their young faces, I saw the future of the park and as much as I enjoyed the performance, it was also sad that there weren’t more adults around to hear their song. We could all use a little refresher course.

denpubs@denpubs.com QUEENSBURY — The Adirondack Living Show will return for another spring show April 8-10 at the Adirondack Sports Complex, “The Dome,” on Sherman Avenue.

The Adirondack Living Show provides information, education and entertainment, and it features exhibits, handson demonstrations and hundreds of products and services indigenous to Adirondack living.

For nine years, event promoter Jeff Fraser, president of Great White Productions, has hosted Adirondack 21 shows at various venues in New York and New Jersey.

“The Adirondack Living Show has earned its place as the largest event of its type in the country, and its unique theme has attracted hundreds of thousands of shoppers over its eight years,” Fraser said.

In The Dome, visitors will find 98,000 square feet of exhibit space with more than 100 vendors selling everything from canoes and docks to rustic signs, Adirondack Great Camp style furniture, exquisite decoys, carved cabinets and paintings. There is plenty of room and plenty to see for the 12,000 visitors anticipated to attend.

The Adirondack Living Show will be held Friday, April 8 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, April 9 from 10 am to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, April 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Adult admission is $9 and sets of four tickets are available for $30.

Children ages 16 and under are admitted free with a paid adult admission.

DEC invites input on 2011 waterfowl seasons ALBANY — New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens has invited hunters to submit recommendations to regional Waterfowl Hunter Task Forces for the dates of the fall 2011 duck hunting seasons. DEC will evaluate the task force recommendations in setting waterfowl seasons, which must comply with federal rules.

New York is divided into five waterfowl hunting zones: Western, Southeastern, Northeastern, Lake Champlain, and Long Island. DEC recently appointed task forces for each zone (except Lake Champlain, see link below) to solicit recommendations for the fall 2011 hunting seasons, including opening and closing dates, split seasons and a special hunting weekend for youths.

Each task force includes representatives from the New York State Conservation Council, established waterfowl hunting organizations and individual waterfowl hunters who were chosen to provide input from diverse points of view. The recommended dates must be within federal guidelines established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). For fall 2011, DEC expects the USFWS to allow a 60-day duck season, split into no more than two segments per zone, opening no earlier than Sept. 24, 2011, and closing no later than Jan. 29, 2012.

Waterfowl hunters can participate by providing duck season suggestions to any task force member on or before April 15, 2011.

Comments can be provided by mail, telephone or e-mail.

The comment due date is important because the task forces will provide their recommendations in late April and DEC plans to announce tentative duck hunting season dates in June.

Project to bury power cable under local waterways moves forward

Lake Champlain Committee The developers of the system — Canadian-based Transmission Developers Inc. (TDI) — still have a number of approvals to obtain, but the company is hopeful it can begin work next year, entering the Lake Champlain phase in 2013, said Donald Jessome, president and CEO of the company.

At the same time, area lake preservation groups hope their concerns will be taken into consideration as the project moves forward.

The plan, dubbed the Champlain Hudson Power Express, received a green light March 21 from the New York Independent System Operators — a group that oversees the state’s electricity market.

It now faces a handful of other regulatory obstacles, including approval by the New York’s Public Service Commission and Army Corp of Engineers.

Under the plan, Transmission Developers would bury two 5-inch power lines from Montreal to New York City, mostly under waterways, including the bottom of Lake Champlain and the Champlain Canal.

The line would then exit the canal in Fort Edward and be buried inland along railroad right-of-ways for about 70 miles to avoid areas of PCB contamination in the Hudson River. The line would re-enter the river south of Albany, ending in a sub-station in Yonkers.

The system is estimated to cost nearly $2 billion and stretch 385 miles. When complete, it would supply New York City with 1,000 Megawatts of power. The average power transmission line, in comparison, is approximately 30 Megawatts. Power would come from hydroelectric and wind sources in Canada.

New York City has long been underpowered while its residents pay some of the highest rates in the country, according to LTI. The new transmission line would power more than 1 million homes, saving consumers roughly $750 million a year, Jessome said.

Mike Winslow, a staff scientist with the Lake Champlain Committee, said his group has identified a number of potential concerns with the plan, including disturbing historic wrecks and sensitive sediment areas on the bottom of the lake.

Young skier dies at West Mountain GLENS FALLS — Sean M. LaFlash, 17, of Fort Ann suffered cardiac arrest near the triple chair lift at West Mountain, causing him to ski off the trail into a wooded area last week.

The victim was found by a friend who has lost track of him while skiing together on a trail called “Banister”.

LaFlash’s accident was reported to ski patrol, who transported LaFlash to the base of the mountain. He was then transported to the Glens Falls Hospital by the West Glens Falls Emergency Squad, but later succumbed to his injuries at the Hospital, according to the Warren County Sherrif’s office.

LaFlash wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The accident is under investigation by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.

In response, the company is considering altering its route in that area, though Jessome could not divulge the exact route because the company is working that out with the New York’s Public Service Commission, in a process known as Article VII. “We are currently in settlement discussions in the Article VII process, and routing issues are deemed to be confidential. We expect to have more detail in this regard by mid April,” Jessome said.

Winslow said the company should contribute to the cost of cleaning up Lake Champlain and keeping the watershed healthy if it is allowed to use the lake as its conduit. The company has said underwater installation is $2 million cheaper per mile than burying lines underground.

“There is so much work that needs to be done to clean Lake Champlain that it only seems fair if the company is going to be using the lake to benefit themselves and their stockholders that they make a substantial contribution to those clean up efforts,” Winslow said.

Jessome said it is the company’s intent to do just that.

“In projects of this type, funds to support studies and mitigation are typically part of the certification process,” he said.

TDI will also be providing annual financial assistance for environmental projects, he said.

In addition, Jessome said local labor will be used to help install the power line — which will be dredged three feet below the lake’s bottom. In total, the company hopes to create about 200 jobs during the installation process.

Local students fair well at state conference Ti student tapped as youth governor

lindsay@denpubs.com ALBANY — Paige Hughes, a junior at Ticonderoga Senior High School marched to the front of the room, crowded with roughly 650 of her peers, to accept her appointment as youth governor at the annual New York State Youth and Government Conference in Albany earlier this month.

Hughes is the first student in 15 years to give her local district, district three, a youth governor election win.

District three is comprised of schools from Newcomb, Bolton, Minerva, Johnsburg and Ticonderoga as well as members from the Glens Falls YMCA. Youth and Government is a national club initiated by the YMCA in states across the country. Participating students mock the actual happenings in each branch of US government. The goal of Youth and Government is to empower teens to make a difference in their communities and to groom the skills and experiences necessary for future leaders.

“It was a very successful year for the district,” said Jackie Palandrani, district advisor.

Local students met earlier this year to hone their skills before the statewide conference and their work has

seemed to pay off.

“These conferences are such a great experience for the students,” said Johnsburg advisor Colleen Muragh. “It prepares them for coming conferences as well as college and beyond.”

Caldwell was also eager to commend the youth-led conference on how it prepares students for their future. As the program grows each year, it becomes clear why it should still be around, he said.

“It enables these students to speak out about important issues,” added Caldwell. “The program and what it teaches can lead to full time jobs.”

Mike Quigan graduated form Bolton Central School in 2005 and was a member of Youth and Government throughout high school. He now works in Albany as a budget analyst in the state Ways and Means Committee for the minority party.

“Youth and Government is the single most important part of why I am doing what I am doing,” he said. “I come acrosss things all the time that I learned in Youth and Government.”

The program strives to give students an in-depth look at the government process and they are both accurate and successful, according to Quigan. He met with local students while they were in Albany and reminded them of this, while encouraging them to get as involved with the program as they possibly can during high school.

Woman received fraudulent child care benefits, police said QUEENSBURY — Janalee R. Altarac, 23, of Queensbury was charged with two counts of offering a false instrument for filing in the 1st degree, one count of welfare fraud in the 5th degree and one count of petit larceny after allegedly filing day care billing forms that contained false information with the Warren County Department Janalee R. of Social Services, according to police.

Police: Man writes forged checks QUEENSBURY — Stephen Stump, 49, of Queensbury was arrested earlier this month for three felony counts of forgery in the second degree. Stump was charged after he allegedly signed the check owner ’s name without permission multiple times throughout January 2011. Stump then used the money from the checks for his own perStephen sonal benefit.

Stump Stump is an acquaintance of the check owner, but did not have permission. The investigation began after the owner noticed discrepancies in his checking account and found that some of his checks were missing.

Stump was arraigned in Queensbury Town Court and was remanded to the Warren County Correctional Facility for lack of bail. He is scheduled to reappear in Queensbury Town Court later this month.

Police: Man received fraudulent food stamps QUEENSBURY — Anthony J. Hockenberry, 43, of Queensbury was charged with welfare fraud in the 3rd degree, grand larceny in the 3rd degree and three counts of offering a false instrument for filing in the 1st degree las week.

He allegedly failed to accurately report his total household income when applying Anthony J. for food stamp benefits, according to WarHockenberry ren County Department of Social Services.

Hockenberry applied for food stamp benefits in Nov. of 2008 and then in March and Oct. of 2009 claiming to be unemployed.

He was determined to be employed during those times and received approximately $4,014 in fraudulent food stamp benefits.

Hockenberry was arraigned in Queensbury Court and was sent back to Saratoga County Jail where he is incarcerated on an unrelated charge.

Local man pleads guilty in painkiller case QUEENSBURY — A former Lake George man, who allegedly sold prescription painkillers in Warren County plead guilty to a felony charge last week, according to police.

Billy Jo Mabb, 37, of Gloversville, plead guilty to a charge of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance in Warren County Court. He received 7 years in state prison and 3 years on parole from Judge John Hall.
