Kooky ‘Downhill Derby’ set for Saturday By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN — For 36 years, local residents have fashioned weird craft — anything from simple cardboard creations to complex or bizarre feats of engineering — to slide down the snowy slope of Dynamite Hill Ski area. The fun-filled Krazy Downhill Derby & Broomball Tournament has been a way for local residents to fend off cabin fever by socializing, mixed with some friendly competition. This year, participation in the event is expected to be greater than ever.

An area resident rides a faux penguin down the slope at chestertown’s Dynamite Hill Ski Area during the 2010 version of the Krazy Downhill Derby in Chestertown. This popular annual sled race featuring home-crafted rigs is set for Saturday, complete with a broomball tournament and hockey shoot-out.
LAKE GEORGE — For two years, downcounty politicians heave threatened to scrap the Warren County Fish Hatchery in Warrensburg. But fierce lobbying efforts by upcounty sportsmen have saved the rare facility, which not only raises fish to stock area waterways, but features a popular picnic and recreation area for gatherings as well as a destination for environmental science students. Now, a Queensbury woman — contrary to the position of many politicians from southern Warren county — is single-handedly seeking to boost the fortunes and protect the future of the hatchery. She’s now lobbying to make the historic hatchery an eco-tourist attraction, as well as raise awareness among natural science teachers and boost the facility’s status as an educational resource. “The fish hatchery is really impressive to me, and it’s something we shouldn’t just let go,” she said, noting it is just one of three county-run hatcheries in the state. “We should all appreciate the assets we have locally.” She is also seeking to better

LAKE GEORGE — The concluding weekend of the 50th anniversary Lake George Winter Carnival is expected to feature favorable weather and a wide range of activities, event organizers said early this week. With sub-freezing temperatures predicted, solid ice on the lake and plenty of snow on the ground, the conditions appear to be quite good, they said. “We welcome everyone to come out and enjoy a whole bunch of family-oriented activities,” Carnival official Kathi Kokalas said. “We’ve got all kinds of things going on.” Headlining the weekend is the second-annual Lake George Sled Dog Races, in which competitors from all over the Northeast and midwestern U.S. earn points towards national and international championships. The races will be conducted both Saturday and Sunday by the New England Sled Dog Club, group member Rainer Wischinski of southern New Hampshire said Tuesday. Wischinski said that the Club members will be bringing about 40 teams to compete, or about double the number last year. This number may be increased even more, he said, as the club has been hearing that a good number of racers from the Midwest are planning to come to Lake George. Racers from Ohio, West Virginia and elsewhere are
