County to ‘Jimmerize’ the region
Carnival commands national attention
By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com
By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — An enthusiastic crowd, keen competition in a crazy contest, and world-class coverage combined to make a memorable for the opening weekend of the 2011 Lake George Winter Carnival. This weekend edition of the 50year-old fest looks equally promising, Carnival organizers said Monday. Saturday’s zany outhouse race across the frozen surface of Lake George featured a bevy of competitors with imaginative outhouses and costumes. The bizarre competition apparently captured the imagination of Manhattan newspaper editors, as

Veterans home planned for Thurman By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com

THURMAN — For years, a sprawling home nestled in the woods off Zaltz Road provided a place for elderly to enjoy the comforts of home with security and serenity. Now, the former Z Place may offer all this and more to U.S. veterans who have issues readjusting to life’s routines. Bruce Sumner and his wife, Sonya Gildred, are seeking to provide a home for soldiers returning from combat — and displaced veterans looking for a new start in life. Whether it’s a homeless veteran seeking emergency housing, or a soldier returning from oversees seeking to transition back into society, Sumner said the veterans home he’s launching, “Turning Point,” will provide the supportive environment that would help up to eight troubled veterans get their lives back together.

“This home will provide the opportunity for veterans to take time for themselves, relax, and get what they need,” he said. Sumner said Turning Point will help veterans pursue schooling, acquire computer skills, get a job, or just function well in life. “I’d like for Turning Point to give veterans the support and direction they may need to get their lives back together,” he said. “There are no veterans homes like this from Glens Falls to Plattsburgh.” To support the mission, he’ll be seeking compensation from government agencies, private and government grants and donations from individuals and businesses. Sumner, who has been living at the spacious home for about a month with Gildred and their children, is leasing the property with an option to buy it. Also, he is now applying to establish Turning Point as a nonprofit charitable corporation.

QUEENSBURY — Millions of people in the Northeast are about to become “Jimmered” into visiting the Glens Falls region. Following the sudden fame of NCAA basketball sensation and Glens Falls native “Jimmer” Fredette, county tourism officials are now seeking to air television commercials that urge people to visit his hometown region and enjoy its recreational assets. County tourism department employees and government leaders met with a marketing expert Friday, Feb. 4 to strategize how to capitalize on BYU star Jimmer Fredette’s recent explosive fame following his 43-point performance
