LAKE GEORGE — Lake Geor ge Winter Carnival opens this weekend with ideal ice conditions, a full lineup of activities, and praise from local officials on the event’s 50th anniversary.

This four-weekend festival of activities on the ice has been staged in L ake G eorge f or 5 0 y ears, f eaturing motor vehicle races on ice, children’s activities, contests and sports games on the lake’s fr ozen surface, and spectator events including the popular weekend polar plunges.

Event or ganizers said Monday they wer e enthusiastic about this year ’s pr ospects, as pr evailing cold weather is building up a hefty sheet of ice so all activities pr oposed can be held.

“Ice conditions ar e perfect this year,” Ed Kokolas said. “Unlike some past years, in 201 1 we’ll be having a full schedule of races and events.”

Saturday begins with opening ceremonies at noon in Shepar d Park complete with a patriotic skydiving salute.

These for malities ar e fol lowed by the traditional Outhouse Races, a beloved featur e of the Carnival since 1983. The competition begins at 12:30 p.m. and race r egistration starts at 10 a.m. at Duffy’s Tavern.

These outhouse races featur e teams, sponsored by local taverns, dragging outrageous homemade outhouses on a coursedown the ice atop Lake Geor ge. While spectators enjoy seeing bar employees and patrons scamper full-speed

Lalone stepping into principal post at Warrensburg

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — Local elementary school fifth grade teacher Keith Lalone will be taking on more compr ehensive duties soon, as he will be temporarily overseeing the academic and conduct aspects of the all grades at the school, Pr e-K thr ough sixth.

From Feb. 28 thr ough May 31, Lalone will be serving as Interim Principal of W arrensburg Elementary School during the maternity leave of Principal Amy Langworthy.

Lalone is pursuing a master ’s degree in Educational Leadership and Administration at the College of St. Rose, and his thr eemonth role as principal at Warrensburg Elementary will help fill requirements of the degree.

Lalone, who has deep local r oots, is studying to be certified as a school administrator, a nd t he t emporary post will serve as an internship toward that goal. Lalone said it would do more for him — giving him a new, additional perspective on his work.

students to be pr oductive and successful members of society by developing their individual strengths,” Lalone said.

For his graduate studies, Lalone attended South Hampton College of Long Island University. He attended Warrensburg Central for 13 years and graduated in 1999. His family hails fr om Stony Cr eek, within the W arrensburg Central School District.

Lalone now lives in Glens Falls with his wife, Emily, and his son, Cecil.

This week, he said that although he’s studying educational leadership, he’s in no r ush to take on an administrative post permanently.

• The case of Robert O. Eastman, 33, of Warrensburg, was adjourned to Feb. 16. He is accused of second-degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation-Alcohol-r elated, based on a traffic stop at 1:04 a.m. Dec. 25 when police said he moved from his lane unsafely. Both town justices Richard Nissen and Mindy Fisk have submitted aequest r to be excused from hearing the case, as judge Fisk has a conflict with the defense attorney’s law firm, Brennan & White, and the defendant has worked for and will be performing work for Nissen.

• John M. Kindred, 42, of Rte. 418, Warrensburg, pled guilty to Driving While Intoxicated based on a traf fic stop Aug. 21. He was sentenced to a Conditional Discharge, assessed a fine and sur charge totaling $1,050, and his license was suspended for 6 months. He was also ordered to attend a Victims’ impact Panel session, continue a lcohol a batement s essions, a nd i nstall an a lcoholtesting ignition interlock on his vehicle for six months.

• The case of Clarissa M. Briggs was adjourned to Feb. 2. She is accused of writing a bad check for $58.06 to Jacobs & Toney Oct. 8, police said.

• Richard G. Gasparro, 20, of Highland New York was arraigned on a Misdemeanor charge of third-degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle based on an incident 7:46 a.m. Jan. 1. His case was adjourned to Feb. 2.

• Jason M. Christen of North Ber gen, N.J. was arraigned on a charge of Unreasonable Speed-Special Hazards, based on an incident 12:25 p.m. Nov . 10 on I-87 Northway.

• John M. Meade, 28, of Rte. 9N in Corinth pled guilty to thir d-degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, a Misdemeanor. He was sentenced to a fine and surcharge of $335. He was stopped after not signalling at an intersection.

• Joshua Lylyk pled guilty to thir d-degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation. He was sentenced to a fine and surcharge of $285.

Lake George Winter Carnival celebrates 50th

The Gold Anniversary Parade, which commemorates the 50th year since the W inter Carnival was launched, starts at 4 p.m. Saturday and proceeds from Prospect Mountain Diner northwar d on Canada St. The parade includes folks garbed in an array of crazy cos tumes, music, f loats, performances along the r oute, and a tr olley carrying over a dozen grand marshals — luminaries of the Carnival fr om decades past who for either cavorted on ice for spectators, or worked behind the scenes to make the tradition such a success.

Also to celebrate the carnival’s longevity, fireworks over the ice will be offered at 6:30 p.m. each Saturday on all four weekends of the Winter Carnival.

This weekend’s activities include a Chili Cook-Off at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, and a Childr en’s Petting Zoo fr om 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Both Saturday and Sunday, activities include tethered hot air balloon rides starting at 8:30 a.m. — weather permitting — and a variety of childr en’s activities and fun games for both youth and adults on the ice fr om noon to 2 p.m. A giant ice slide in Shepar d Park is available during daylight hours over the weekend.

The Carnival also includes a new Skydiving Swoop Competition daily over the frozen lake.

Also returning for both Saturday and Sunday are tethered hot-air balloon rides, childr en's indoor crafts and games from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — inside King Neptune's tavern.

New helicopter excursions join the ever-popular dog-sled rides and skydiving sessions over the ice — all available for a fee.

And what would W inter Carnival be without its trademark Polar Plunge? The event featur es dozens of brave swimmers dashing into the frigid lake — a favorite spectator event set for 3 p.m. each Satur day and Sunday . The Plunge is preceded at 2:30 p.m. by the Snowmobile Water Skip, in which a sled pilot careens over open waters for 100 yards or more, defying gravity that could sink his snowmobile into the icy waters.

In addition, a wood- and ice-carving demonstrations ar e to occur intermittently Saturday and Sunday.

VETERAN VOLUNTEERS — Lake George Winter Carnival officials from decades past — who for either cavorted on ice for spectators, or worked behind the scenes — were saluted Saturday evening at the annual Carnival kickoff banquet for their dedicated work over the past 50 years in making the month-long festival such a success.

This year’s Carnival activities include a weekly bonfire on the beach from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, featuring marshmallow roasting and participants creating their own s’mores with the savory ingr edients pr ovided. This heartwarming family activity includes Ritchie Ortiz leading campfir e songs, Kokolas said.

Volunteers sought for Cabin Fever event Bolton Free Library is still seeking help for its second annual Cabin Fever fundraiser, set for Saturday, Feb. 19.

In its debut year, it attracted a tremendous crowd that was enthusiastic about this social event which dissipated the doldrums of winter. This year, the Cabin Fever Cure-All, which raises money for the Bolton Library, is to be held at the T o wn Garage in order to accommodate the large crowd that’s anticipated. The Cabin Fever Cur e-All includes gourmet food donated by local r estaurants, live music by Bill Campbell and the Blue Moon band, and a tropical theme which is envisioned to include extensive props and decorations.

Lake George progressing on sewer tasks

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — The Lake Geor ge Village Board voted in a special meeting last week to draft a $1.7 million bond to fund a septic system upgrade project.

The project calls for r einforcing underground pipes with “slip liners” and prevent leaks or line breaks.

Also, the purchase installation of new bypass pumps and and r estoration of sewer system laterals and manholes is called for.

Stemming from a sewer pipe and pump failure occurring in July 2009, the state Department of Envir onmental Conservation has imposed a September deadline for the village to complete the work.

Village Public Works chief Dave Harrington said that 50 percent of the slip-lining would likely be finished by spring, with the other half by early autumn.

The pipe repair upgrade project is a key element in a $3.8 million program to upgrade the entire sewer system — including pumps and equipment — by early 2012.

At the special meeting, the village boar d also decided to relax the r equirement for election inspectors to be village residents — they may now be r esidents of Warren County.

The change was made due to the necessity of election inspectors to be trained in the use of the new computerized, ballot-scanning voting machines.

Also, the Chazen Co. planning firm was authorized to pr epare an application for a grant on the village’s behalf, to help fund the Route 9 Gateway Streetscape Enhancement Plan the village is pursuing along with the town of Lake George.

The village trustees also voted to appoint Dennis Bar den to the village Zoning Board of Appeals to fill the unexpired term of Tim Hill, who resigned. The appointment is eff ective through April 1, 2015.

Events remind us that respect is key to tolerance S

everal events have hit home with me recently, causing me pause and reflect about the true meaning and impact they have, not only on my life, but the lives of all who share this small world we all call home.

Perhaps like you, I pull from life experiences to draw perspective on current events. I thought back to my childhood upbringing. I was taught to respect the differences of others and to be tolerant of those around me, for they also had “rights.” In the early 1960s, my family moved from western Pennsylvania to the deep south, in Texas.

Two situations crossed my mind.

For those of you not around back then, the nation was dealing with severe racial issues and African-Americans in our society had not yet achieved true equality. I recall after school I would hang around and help the African-American janitor empty waste paper cans and sweep the floors. Our neighborhood wasn’t racially diverse, but I had no preconceived notions about such things. I must have been in second grade or so and no one was paying me or forcing me to be there. We came from very different backgrounds, but I recall enjoying his company. He was a nice man and we laughed and talked about the events of our day. Of course, I was pretty much oblivious to the racial issues, except for some cautioning by my parents. I didn’t know or care about the racial events swirling around. He accepted me, and I, him.

About the same time I recall a schoolyard bully. He was about a year or two older than I, and for a period, every time he would see me, he would grab me by the

shoulders and throw me to the ground.

And I wasn’t the only one who suffered this ritual fate. I didn’t know him, nor did I ever have a run-in with him before this started, but being larger and tougher in appearance than me at the time, I had no choice but to brush myself off and try my best to steer clear of him at recess on the playground. Then one day he approached me, and as I prepared to bite the dust, he stopped, apologized and asked if we could be friends.

At the time it seemed like a great alternative to not being friends.

As we palled around, I discovered we had many differences and oddly enough he was an atheist going to a Catholic school. On occasion, the kid would eat dog or cat food. Gainesburgers had recently been introduced and I recall he considered them a delicacy. Despite his encouragement, there was no way I was putting that stuff to my lips. We would talk about religious beliefs, and while we never swayed each other, it never seemed to matter to either of us. I later learned more about the difficult life and poverty his family experienced.

As we fast-forward to 2011, I can’t help but wonder why we can’t accept the differences among us and be more tolerant of each other. As a young child, I was able to accept people for who they were with no strings attached. But more and more these days, people seem to be confusing freedoms with an entitlement to control. We

It doesn’t matter whether it was Rockefeller the Republican, Cuomo the elder Democrat, Pataki, Spitzer, or Paterson — the inexorable descent towar ds more government, mor e regulation and more taxation continues unabated. Aided by the philosophy of tax and spend, local politicians ar e eager to pander to every voting block fr om unions to fire companies and the aggrieved ethnic “gr oup de jour,” the downward spiral continues.

Other People’s Money (OPM), is not to be confused with real charity, which is the giving of one’s self or wealth. Phony charity is the allocation of the public tr easury to the squeaky wheel and hiding this under the banner of sensitivity, caring or altruism.

No elected official ever gave you anything that wasn’t extracted from someone else. Fine examples of this are the Em-

hear stuff like, “I’m entitled to have whatever I want and anyone who stands in the way of my choices will just have to change their ways because this is MY America and anything that I find opposed to MY Way of Life must be wrong!”

The Bill of Rights guarantees us certain freedoms, among them the right to assemble, to speak freely, to respect the establishment and practice of religion, to be secure in our homes and to not unduly deny the rights of others. But these laws designed to protect the freedoms of all are being used by a few who find some actions or activities offensive to their beliefs.

In Essex County government, some find a short prayer before the session offensive.

In Tupper Lake, despite strong community support, we see environmental groups blocking needed economic development proposed by the Adirondack Club. Last year, we saw some of the same groups behind blocking the development on the Lewis Family Farm in Essex.

There are many things going on all around us that some find offensive and yet others find very acceptable and that’s OK. We can and will have differences. It is those differences that make us strong and unique.

But there are big differences between offending actions, and seeking to control everything you see, hear and want. You might be offended by hearing a prayer. So

Politicians and bure aucrats do not suff er from failure because their capital is provided by OPM. A first step to bringing the state back to greatness is for the government to get out of the banking business, and those unnecessary bureaucrats can be returned to the productive workforce. The savings would result in millions, not only in salaries but in the failed economic projects that these monies funded. Keep in mind, always, that the lost money is not fr om some private bank — it's your money.

The state's corporate income tax is among the highest in the nation. Hey Mr. Businessman, how would you like to come here and pay that?

New York State has a big fat personal income tax. This has prompted many r esidents to take partial r esidencies in another state such as Florida. Regulatory agencies in NewYork State have an anti-business pr edatory attitude whose job seems to be business ethnic cleansing. Don't listen to their rhetoric — observe the consequences of their actions — the Adirondack Park Agency being a perfect case in point.

Redundancy in state agencies is costly and ensnaring for any citizen trying to go thr ough the permitting pr ocess or compliance. Many of these agencies could cease to exist and

Conservancy protects public access to forests To the editor: Last week, you printed an article that was critical of the state’s recent purchase of a conservation easement on about 89,000 of land and water in the Adirondack Park from the Nature Conservancy. The writer overlooked some important facts.

The state spent $30 million fr om the Envir onmental Protection Fund to buy development rights and r ecreational rights on these former Finch, Pruyn & Co. lands. But the deal was even better for the economy than for the envir onment.

The money was spr ead across 27 Adirondack towns, where new snowmobile trails, hiking trails and fishing access will be opened to the public for the first time in 130 years. That’s a $1.1 million average investment in each town’s tourism.

The deal had the support of all 27 Adirondack town supervisors, every one of whom knew the details and negotiated specific benefits for his/her community . For example, North Hudson, Newcomb, Long Lake, Minerva and Indian Lake will share a brand new trail network as part of 75 additional miles of snowmobile trails that can be wider and more easily gr oomed than trails on public For est Preserve.

Other towns asked for and received access via float plane to remote lakes. Also, the Natur e Conservancy made sur e the former Finch paper mill in Glens Falls was guaranteed a supply of pulp timber fr om these lands for at least the next 20 years.

You might be offended that in this tiny hamlet of Tupper Lake a resort club and homes will be built, people will have jobs, storefronts will be a filled, and money will again flow through this once prominent community improving the quality of life for those who make this area their home… you’ll survive if they build it, while many may not survive if it doesn’t get built.

Last week I attended the bullying discussion hosted by MAPP. The discussion focused on bullying in our schools. We heard about local statistics, watched a video that featured a number of children around the country who have been bullied because of simple and meaningless differences. Some have even been driven to commit suicide.

Like my friend in grade school or the elderly janitor who taught me much about people, I didn’t have to agree with their beliefs or the things they did to accept them. Skin color, religious or political beliefs, mode of dress, color of your hair, where you choose to live or other lifestyle choices —there are plenty of days I shake my head at the actions of others who think and act differently than I, but, in the end, so long as they are doing no personal harm to anyone, I can respect their right to share this small world and enjoy the control, over their life choices, that I have the right to expect in my own life choices.

Try opening a saw mill, a mine, or a farm in the Adirondacks and see how long it takes. Unless you have a lot of money for legal expenses and years to wait for nothing, you will be defeated morally and financially . The case of T im Jones, which went on for two decades and only ended because of Governor Paterson’s executive order and the Lewis Farm case in Essex County are graphic examples of this. But then again, that is the purpose of the Adirondack/Champlain U.N. Biosphere Reserve which forbids human habitation and anything other than subsistence agriculture (a garden). Oh, the APA and the Adirondack Council didn’t tell you that? Must have slipped their minds as well as the collective minds of our elected representatives.

Clearly, the road to defeat is paved with the accommodation of evil. The APA and its hidden agenda should be terminated, but this is just one agency and one state entity that needs elimination on the road to financial recovery. There is nothing that the APA does legitimately that can’t be handled by the Department of Envir onmental Conservation and the Department of State.

At the same time, the state’s easement pur chase prevented the loss of timber industry jobs that would have come if these lands wer e subdivided and pur chased for other purposes. Once something like that happens, the opportunity to harvest the tr ees for paper and wood pr oducts is gone forever — on some of the park’s most productive timberlands.

Some people might be surprised to learn that the work of land-saving organizations such as The Nature Conservancy, Open S pace I nstitute, C onservation F und, a nd o thers, i s what has saved the timber industry in the Adirondacks. All of the park’s major timber companies fled the Northeast in the past 25 years, selling their lands and closing their mills.

This includes Champion International, International Paper, Diamond International, Domtar Industries, Finch, L yons Falls Pulp & Paper , and a host of others. T ogether, they owned more than one million acres of private forests in the Adirondack Park. It all went on the market.

If those companies had sold their lands to developers, no one would be talking about putting public trails on them.

We would all be watching the new owners build fences and put up posted signs. W e would be wondering what might happen to those for ests we know and love. Instead, mor e than two dozen Adirondack towns took matters into their own hands and for ged a deal that would benefit everyone.

This is a reason to celebrate, not second-guess.

FORT EDWARD -- With a a flashy coordinated offense and a steely in-four -face defense, Fort Edwar d buried Warrensburg 67-22. For Warrensburg, Junior Alexa Bryant led with seven points, followed by Ashlie Morehouse with six. Kaitlyn Kuklinski hit a thr ee pointer plus Isabella Szabo and Montana Sheridan added two points apiece.

Warrensburg is now 2-9 in the Adirondack League for the 2010-11 season; Fort Edward is 5-6.

WARRENSBURG — The W arrrensburg boys basketball team relied on aggressive rebounding, scrappy defense and creative, showy shots to establish a lead early on in a game Monday against the talented Fort Edward team — a lead that appeared to be beyond reach.

But Fort Edward bounced back with ferocity in the fourthquarter and closed a 10-point gap and tying the scor e with less than 8 seconds to play, sending the game into overtime.

Warrensburg, however, showed their fans their character they’ve recently been displaying, in overtime.

Poise and composure made the difference.

They shot 10 for 10 in foul shots in the extra stanza to secure the 54-46 win.

Mike Curtis put on an of fensive show during the game with deep three-pointers, lightning quick no-look sideways passes and a shot at the thir d-quarter buzzer fr om behind the backboard and near the southern eastern sideline. Curtis led with 17 points — including thr ee 3-pointers — followed by John Joseph with 12 points.

Joseph was conducting his own shooting clinic during the game, with his floating jumpshots under the basket, several of which were underhanded far-side layups over his opponents heads and arms. Ryan Belden was a key element in the game with his long arms grabbing rebounds and putting up 11 points. Girls Basketball Whitehall 50, North Warren 41

WHITEHALL — The tough Whitehall girls basketball team took char ge early in a contest against North W arren Monday night with pr oductive offensive teamwork and r elentless defense to earn a 50-41 victory.

Wasting no time, Whitehall jumped out to 17-4 first-quarter lead, and although the Cougars staged a valiant comeback by racking up 37 points, the effort fell short of a win.

Railroader Katie Paddock tallied 13 points and Brittney Putorti contributed 12 for Whitehall.

Part of Whitehall’s success was keeping the Cougar players contained to the outside. North W arren’s Kiera Warner overcame their defense, however, by racking up a game-high 20 points with four 3-pointers.

With the loss, North W arren is 4-7 in the Adirondack league and 5-8 overall for 2010-1 1. Whitehall is 4-7 and 5-8 respectively.

The Cougars did leave the birthplace of the U.S. Navy with some satisfaction, however, as the Junior Varsity won their matchup with flair.

Local emergency squad responding again The Thurman Emergency Squad is once again the town’s designated responders. Everything was signed and back in place at about noon Jan. 26. The year -round folks of the town are very much relieved, but won’t forget the scare they went through for about two months of not knowing who they could call. Stray kittens and cats have been crawling into buildings, sheds and under por ches trying to survive the sever e cold temperatures — up to 30 below zer o. They are so hungry that a crust of bread looks good? Folks have made numer ous calls asking for help from shelters, pet hospitals, etc. but nothing is being done and it has been over a month. Any ideas?

Did we vote on the state buying yet more Adirondack land — 87,000 acres at a cost of $30 million? I don't remember it being a r eferendum on the November ballot? Or isn't that necessary anymore?

For all of you who call and ask for an occasional weather report for our ar ea, the morning of Jan. 24 temperatur es dropped, ranging from minus 25 to minus 29 with a few reports minus 18 or so! We have lots of snow on the ground — about 18 to 24 inches so far , with mor e storms in the for ecast.

Last fall there was a meeting held in Chestertown, sponsored by T eresa Sayward and Betty Little. It tackled all the concerns and problems of the Adirondack residents and was well attended b y p eople f rom t he whole park. The meeting was not well-publicized beforehand, and I was pleased

to see so many people there.

Also, I was glad to notice coverage of the event by Adirondack Journal Editor Thom R andall, a nd n oticed that no other papers wer e represented there.

Events and activities in the hills The “Valentines for Vets” event at the Town Hall from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 5. The event needs lots of volunteers to help make many hearts for the Veterans in our area. All ages are welcome and homemade pizza is planned for all. This community event is held by the town Youth Commission.

The people of North Cre ek got together and resurrected the train station a few years ago, and have enjoyed the surge of business that the Upper Hudson Railroad has brought to their small town.

Now the W arren County Board of Supervisors has fired the company , which has operated the system, and is quibbling about its successor while the summer season appr oaches without plans.

Town of Chester Supervisor Fred Monroe agreed that the development, as pr oposed with local crafts and foods, would be good for commerce in town.

“The traveling public loves places like that — it sounds like an idea that would attract people and draw them into downtown and help all local businesses,” Monroe said.

Behan said the pr oject was likely to cost between $1 million and $2 million to build, and would have 10,000 square feet of space.

Both the upper story and lower story would be on ground level, as the site is sloped, he said.

John Behan, the Principal of Behan Planning & Design, has been helping local citizens in their efforts to beautify and r evitalize the Chestertown hamlet.

Mary Jane Dower , chair of the Chestertown Main Street Enhancement Committee, said that Behan’s Chestertown Gateway would help boost downtown commer ce, as well as enterprises across Chester and Horicon.

“This development sounds wonderful — it’s a big start in helping revitalize Chestertown,” she said. “Any way to get visitors to go downtown will be great.”

Communities brace for snowmobiling boon Andy Flynn andy@denpubs.com NEWCOMB — Now that the papers are signed for the $30 million state easement on 89,000 acr es of former Finch, Pruyn land in the central Adirondacks, Hamilton and Essex County tourism of ficials ar e hoping the new snowmobile trail that cuts through the easement, from Newcomb to Indian Lake, will boost winter business.

The 14-mile trail, known to snowmobilers as T rail 538, is now open along logging roads on lands owned by ATP Timberland Invest, which r ecently signed the landmark deal with New York state. The N ewcomb S nowmobile Club is grooming the northern half of the trail, and the Indian Lake Snowarriors club is grooming the southern half.

Snowmobiling has long been a popular sport in the Essex County town of Newcomb, and it’s been a source of income for some small businesses, like the Newcomb House Bar & Grill and Aunt Polly's Bed & Br eakfast. But Newcomb has traditionally been seen as a “dead end” by the snowmobiling community, a destination, yes, but on the way to nowhere. Two main factors added to this perception: No gas pump in town and no through-trails for snowmobiles.

This winter, that's all changed, and Newcomb is poised to become a haven for snowmobiling.

The Northwoods Diner and General Store in Newcomb recently opened a gas pump — the first one in town in almost a decade — and the new snowmobile trail fro m Newcomb to the Hamilton County town of Indian Lake is now open. This is being seen as a perfect recipe for economic opportunity in Newcomb, n ow t hat s ledders c an d rive f rom t he t own o f Long Lake to Newcomb to Indian Lake and destinations south. It creates a long-distance loop for snowmobiles traveling from Inlet and Old Forge, known widely as the “Snowmobile Capital of the East.”

The new trail has only been open less than a month, and early snow wasn’t optimal for a smooth-riding base. Yet there has been some interest in Trail 538.

were gassing up at the local Stewart's Shop, and she liked what she heard.

“They came to Long Lake because they knew they could get to Indian Lake fr om Long Lake,” Roalsvig said. “By hooking up with Indian Lake, we're getting a whole new audience.”

There ar e mor e than 100 miles of fr ee, gr oomed trails in the town of Long Lake, home to the Moonlighters Snowmobile Club. There are no permit fees, which could draw sledders from other areas, such as the towns of Old Forge and Inlet, wher e permits ar e r equired on the hundr eds of groomed trails ther e. And connecting to Indian Lake can draw long-distance sledders from as far away as Speculator.

Indian Lake Chamber of Commer ce Pr esident Nancy Harding, co-owner of Marty's Chili Nights restaurant in Indian Lake, said she hopes the new trail will attract mor e snowmobilers to her town.

“It should be a help in the long un,” r Harding said, adding that the chamber has already received some inquiries about Trail 538.

Any town with r estaurants and lodging has an opportunity to draw the snowmobiling crowd, especially those who want to travel long distance. Long Lake and Indian Lake are ready, but Newcomb today only off ers a couple of choices in the winter. Newcomb Supervisor George Canon said he hopes that will change with time and that rail T 538 will spark some economic development. Ther e is even talk about extending snowmobile trails to Minerva and North Hudson.

When the Nature Conservancy announced the $30 million easement purchase in a pr ess release on Dec. 30, 2010, of ficials said the agr eement — which limits development, allows for the harvest of timber, and opens up the land to outdoor recreation — “supports timber industry jobs, boosts the state’s r ecreation and tourism economy and, at the same time, preserves 89,000 forested acres concentrated in the geographic heart of the Adirondacks.”

In the r elease, tourism of ficials beamed with excitement over the possibilities for increased tourism traffic. One after the other, they lined up to offer their take on the purchase.

Jim McKenna, executive director of the Lake Placid-based Adirondack Regional Of fice of Sustainable T ourism said, “The Adirondacks ar e r epeatedly picked by AAA as New York’s number one destination for leaf peeping … Many of the lands pr otected by this agr eement ar e the very places people travel here to see in all of their autumn splendor — helping to increase economic activity to our communities.”

Barry Hutchens, Indian Lake town supervisor said, “Indian Lake has been paying to lease snowmobile trails on an annual basis … Now , with the uncertainty associated with year-to-year leasing erased, we see these trails as permanent and valuable assets that can help our str uggling winter economy and our town budget appropriations.”

Canon added, “This easement is a step towar d making Newcomb a central hub for snowmobiling and winter recreation. It’s pretty great to get some real economic benefit from it.”

Canon, Roalsvig and Harding all believe that their towns can become snowmobile hubs thanks to Trail 538. But will it make an economic impact this year? They all say it’s too early to tell.

Delaney chosen to lead APA Review Board

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — A Clinton County man who grew up on a homestead farm and spent 18 years as a logger has been named chairman of the Adirondack Park Local Government Local Review Board.

On Jan. 26, T own of Saranac boar d member Gerald Delaney was elected unanimously and installed as chairman of the Review Boar d. He succeeds George Canon of Newcomb.

Delaney said that in his new position, he’d be working diligently to advocate on behalf of those who live and work in the Adirondacks.

Delaney said that he was well-versed on the issues important to local year round residents.

“I worked on farms in the Adirondacks since my youth — I picked up a chain saw at the age of 18 and worked in the woods as a logger , felling and skidding tr ees,” he said, noting that forest-related r esources wer e important traditionally and in the pr esent day — for both local cultur e and the economy.

“The logging and natural r esources industries in the r egion have cr eated the c haracter o f t he c ommunities a nd people of the Adirondacks — it’s who

Monroe said he’s been awar e of Delaney’s activism on behalf of Adirondack citizens, through both their work with the Adir ondack Association of Towns and Villages. Delaney has been a member of the panel for two and a half years, Monroe said.

“He’s got a lot of energy, and he has a great perspective,” Monroe said.

Delaney has deep r oots in the Adirondacks. He grew up on his family’s farm, established in 1899.

Delaney said Jan. 26 one of his top concerns was the state’s unr estrained acquisition of land in the Adirondacks — taking woodlands out of pro duction.

“The Adirondacks became what they are because of the stewardship of large and small landowners,” he said. The state er odes that by buying up the working forests.”

Delaney added that logging was vital for providing income for families in the Adirondacks.

“With the state buying up land, so many entry-level jobs ar e now gone,” he said.

SCHROON — A meeting of the Schroon Lake Watershed Management Plan Steer ing Committee is set for 10 a.m.

Tuesday Feb. 8 at the Schroon Lake Town Hall. The Steering Committee is comprised of representatives from the towns of Chester , Horicon and Schr oon, the East Shor e Schr oon Lake Association, the Schroon Lake Association, and the Essex and Warren County Soil and Water districts.

New York Press Association Paid Summer Internship Program The New York Press Association and Denton Publications are sponsoring a paid summer internship program for 13 students state wide. An application has been sent to high schools and colleges within New York State. Where’s the trail?

I

was still a teenager, when I began working for the recently created, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation in the spring of 1974. My first assignment was as a laborer with a Trail Crew tmaintaining the hiking trail to the summit of Hurricane Mountain, near Elizabethtown.

The Fire Tower Observer was our supervisor, and he had a real bad attitude with the new agency, which he called the blankety-blank, “Department of Eternal Consternation”.

He regularly complained that the new agency, which replaced the venerable, old Conservation Department, was composed of “more fools than tools”, especially since we went through equipment faster than the department could afford to replace it.

Trail work was a muddy, buggy and backbreaking endeavor. We were particularly hard on the equipment after my fellow laborers learned if they broke the handles off enough shovels, our efforts would be relegated to trimming bushes and whipping weeds; rather than moving boulders and installing water bars along the steep trail.

At the time I was an avid hiker, often climbing in the High Peaks with Geoff Carleton, a well-known birder from Elizabethtown. For me, the trail work was entertaining, with a mix of hard work and the pleasure of being in the woods.

But when the camping season opened in late June of 1974, I was fortunate to transfer to Lincoln Pond State Campground, where I began a five-summer stint as a Lifeguard. Although I actually enjoyed the trail work and the mountaintop vistas, the view on the beach was much better for a teenager.

In 1974, the department’s hiking literature indicated that there were a total of over 2000 miles of marked hiking trails within the Adirondack Park. In 1980, Essex County tourism brochures touted the same 2000-mile tally. In 1990, I Love New York tourism still maintained that there were

t appears the recent cold snap froze more than the water pipes in my home ... area lakes are buttoned up as well, like a fine Italian dress shirt.

The lower end of Lake Champlain and nearly all its bays are now fishable, as is the majority of Lake George. The smaller lakes are well frozen, though some are difficult to navigate because of snow and slush.

Popular fishing destinations like Lake Eaton, Long Lake, Raquette Lake, Indian Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, Eagle Lake, Paradox Lake, Brant Lake and Schroon Lake also hold fishable ice.

As a result, a handful of ice fishing tournaments loom in the region, including those in Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, Schroon Lake, Hague and Pilot Knob.

The Northern Challenge — Feb. 5

TUPPER LAKE — Hundreds of fisherman from throughout the Northeast are expected to converge on Lake Simond this weekend for the Northern Challenge Ice Fishing Derby sponsored by the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club and the Adirondack Regional Federal Credit Union.

The only thing larger than the turnout for this great derby are the prizes, which range from two new four-wheelers to hourly cash awards of $800 for fish that are caught.

Entrants are encouraged to pre-register on Friday, Feb. 4 from noon until 10 p.m. at the Tupper Lake Rod and Gun Club located on Lake Simond Road, or anglers can register the day of the derby starting at 3 a.m. through the end of the day.

Fishing will take place during this catch-and-release tournament from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. and prizes will be dolled out at 4 p.m.

The Lake George Chinga-Classic — Feb. 19-20

PILOT KNOB — The popular Lake George Chinga-Classic, now in its 10th season, will have a new twist this year.

Organizers YMCA Camp Chingachgook and FISH307.com have this year partnered with the Northeast Ice Fishing Tour to add a competitive panfish derby to the event.

As in the past, prizes will still be awarded to children and adults for heaviest fish in the categories of perch, pike, lake trout and salmon during the two-day tourney, but the event has been expanded to include the first annual panfish tournament.

This is a total weight tournament open to those entering a total of 10 panfish, which can include any combination of perch, bluegill, sunfish or crappie.

2000 miles of maintained trails.

Even though nearly forty years have passed since I first discovered the total trail mileage tally, (in which time NY state has since added an additional one million acres of land to the Forest Preserve), the same figure of 2000 miles of trails, is still accepted as fact today.

In a publication published by the National Outdoor Leadership School, authors Bruce Hampton and David Cole explained that our nation’s trails are declining in total, “In the 1930s, our national forests had 132,000 miles of trails; today there are fewer than 100,000 miles…. Today, although our national forest backcountry has 25 percent fewer trails, the public's use of trails has grown steadily. For every person hiking a trail in 1960, more than three people now leave their bootprints .”

I wondered if a similar situation was occurring in the Adirondacks, so I posed the question to Tony Goodwin, of Keene Valley. Goodwin is the Executive Director of both the Adirondack Trail Improvement Society (ATIS) and the Jackrabbit Ski Trail. A well known authority on Adirondack hiking trails, he is responsible for maintaining 115 miles of ATIS trails in and around Keene Valley, and for the 33 miles of the Jackrabbit Ski Trail.

Goodwin explained, “It has not shrunk that significantly in the Adirondacks. I think you find out the total if you add up the mileage from the Adirondack Mountain Club Guidebooks. There may not be a lot of new trails, but there have not been many lost.”

I wondered, how could it be? So, my first call went out to the Adirondack Mountain Club, (ADK) an organization that was formed in 1922 to promote hiking and outdoor travel. From the beginning, ADK has been responsible for the design and construction of the majority of trails in the Sunday with an awards ceremony to immediately follow.

The Chinga-Classic is headquartered at the camp at the end of Pilot Knob Road off State Route 9L. The entry fee is $25 per person per day, or $30 for both days. Kids under 12 may register for $6 per day, or $10 for both days. The fee will be $35 with the panfish tourney included.

Northern Lake George Ice Fishing Tournament — Feb. 26-27

HAGUE — One of the region’s longest-running hardwater contests — the annual Northern Lake George Ice Fishing Tournament — will be held this year Feb. 26-27.

The event, now in its 52nd year, is sponsored by the Hague Fish & Game Club and chambers of commerce of Hague and Ticonderoga. The entry fee is again just $15 for the two-day event with kids under 16 and seniors over 65 fishing for free. Cash and prizes will be awarded to the top six in the categories of lake trout, salmon, perch and northern pike.

Organizer Steve Ramant said prizes include a Strikemaster gas auger, Perch a Clam Kenai ice-shelters, and Vexilar Cold-Snap parka and bib sets.

New this year will be a clinic offered to area youth and novice anglers by Strikemaster pro angler Shawn Hayes.

The clinic will be offered Feb. 26 at 8 a.m. at the town beach in Hague, and equipment will be provided to the first 40 registrants.

Today, ADK proudly continues this legacy. Currently, the organization has a professional trail crew to maintain state trails under a service contract with DEC. Additionally, various ADK Chapters provide numerous volunteer trail crews who are responsible for designing new trails and maintaining the older ones. And, ADK Guidebooks are considered the definitive source of information on hiking trails in the park.

However, even they could not provide a current net total of the trail mileage in the park. Neil Woodworth, ADK’s Executive Director explained, “It is difficult to provide an accurate number, possibly the (DEC's) Unit Management Plans could shed some light on it. Rather than creating new trails, we are rerouting old trails or providing new connector trails for recently acquired lands.”

Woodworth mentioned projects such as new trails to the summits of Lyon Mountain and Mt. Adams near Tahawus, as examples of ADK’s redesigned trails. These routes now incorporate a series of switchbacks to combat trail erosion, and lessen the pitch of the climb.

These are new trails, but the cumulative affect has very little change in the overall total mileage. It seems that we are not loosing trails, however we aren’t gaining any either.

Next week, I hope to have a more complete answer to the perplexing question of how the addition of over a million acres into the Adirondack Forest Preserve, has not changed the trail mileage in more than 40 years?

Colby Classic Ice Fishing Derby — March 5-6

SARANAC LAKE — The 27th annual Colby Classic Ice Fishing Derby will officially kick-off at 7 a.m., March 6.

Fishing will conclude at 4 p.m. each day.

Sponsored by the Saranac Lake and Fish and Game Club, the annual derby will be held at Lake Colby in the village of Saranac Lake.

Contestants can pre-register at the Blue Line Sports Shop in Saranac Lake or on either of the derby days at the Lake Colby beach house across from the Adirondack Medical Center. Derby Day registration begins at 6:45 a.m. each day.

The fee is $7 per adult per day or $10 for both days.

Youths under age 16 can register for $3 per day or $5 for both days.

Prizes will be awarded to both adults and youths in the categories of trout, salmon, perch and northern pike. A grand prize of a fully-chartered fishing trip for two people will be drawn, and other door prizes will be awarded.

As in the past, 15 tagged fish will be stocked in Lake Colby prior to the derby by the state fish hatchery in Lake Clear. A $100 prize will be awarded to any fisherman who catches a tagged fish.

SCHROON LAKE — The Schroon Lake derby has also grown into one of the region’s largest with cash payouts in three categories and daily giveaways.

Fishing during this two-day event begins at daylight and ends at 4 p.m. Sunday. An awards ceremony will follow at the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club.

News of the Week Tupper officer slept in car

TUPPER LAKE — T upper Lake Police Chief Tom Fee told the V illage Boar d of Trustees earlier this month that he caught one of his officers sleeping on the job while he was supposed to be on patrol.

Fee told the Village Board he was trying to find out if officers on his staff were misappropriating their time. The of ficer in Tom Fee question slept in his vehicle while it was parked outside of his home. He was also caught sleeping behind the wheel while parked on the side of the road.

Additionally, Fee found that two other officers went home for several hours during their shifts, leaving their cr uisers running idle in the driveway.

Fee advised members of the T upper Lake Village Board that each officer involved would receive an official warning. Mayor Mickey Desmarais said he considered the matter taken care of.

Woman charged with forgery

QUEENSBURY — The Warren County Sheriff’s Office arrested Dawn L. Powers, 30, of Saratoga Springs last week on six counts of second-degr ee For gery, a Felony. The arr est follows an investigation into Powers using the checks of a male acquaintance on six dif ferent occasions at the Queensbury W alMart. For Dawn L. each transaction, Powers signed the vicPowers tim’s name on the electr onic signatur e pad, police said.

Powers was arraigned in Glens Falls City Court and released to appear on Jan. 31 in Queensbury Town Court. This case was investigated by Investigator John Maday and Patrol Officer Eric Mazzeo of the Warren County Sheriff’s office.

Freight train derails in Whitehall

WHITEHALL — A freight train derailed in Whitehall around 1:30 a.m. last Saturday, closing down South William Street.

One engine was on its side and several of the 50 cars derailed, but resulted in no spills or injuries.

The Vermont Rail Co. fr eight train was headed west when it jumped the tracks near the railroad trestle over Wood Creek.

ALBANY — A bill was advanced this week in a NewYork Assembly committee that could make New York the first to ban electronic cigarettes.

The devices offers same effects of nicotine without the deadly health threats.

Currently, children can buy the plastic devices, which contain nicotine, and they aren't covered by indoor smoking bans.

Officials say e-cigar ettes can help curb a smoking habit, but are also addictive habit themselves.

Plus, some studies have indicated that vapors e-cigar ettes contain substances that threaten the health of those that use them.

NORTH CREEK — A crowd gathered at Ski Bowl Park in North Cr eek as a ribbon was cut to mark the opening of the Hudson chairlift and intr oduced the completed inter connect between Gore Mountain and the historic Ski Bowl last Saturday, Jan. 26.

The r edeveloped terrain on Little Gore Mountain, which now featur es snowmaking and trails for all ability levels, is now open for skiers and snowboarders, which pr ovides access to the r est of Gor e Mountain's multipeak trail system.

Local and state of ficials gathered to commemorate the historic significance of the connection between Gore , the Ski Bowl and village of North Creek.

“This is wher e skiing began in the Adirondacks,” said Sen. Elizabeth Little, R-Queensbury. “This is an incredi-

ble moment on an incredible day.”

The new trails follow the pr ofile of the same terrain North Creek’s earliest skiers traveled. The Hudson chair lifeline was once home to a 1946 t-bar.

When Little asked the surr ounding crowd to raise a hand if they had skied the original Little Gore, the majority of hands shot into the air.

“This is a historic preservation project,” said ORDAchairman Joe Martens.

“The Town of Johnsbur g pushed very hard for this pr oject and made clear just how important this was to the town.”

Little also praised the inter connect as a means to support the economic development of the village of North Creek.

“What this will do for the hamlet of North Cr eek will involve them in the whole ski experience,” she said. “W e will be a destination. It goes to show that persistence pays off.”

marketing dir ector, welcomed the many skiers and riders who waited to be the first to try the new lift she commended the Hudson chairlift as, “the starting point of an elevation of 3600 feet and a new starting point for the er gion.”

“It is the people of Gor e that make this special,” she said. “I wish I had a bottle of champagne right now.”

Skiers and snowboar ders can now park at the Ski Bowl and have access to all of Gor e Mountain. The connection brings Gore the title of being the sixth largest ski resort in the east and is a re sult of years of planning, beginning with the formative ideas of past Johnsburg supervisor Bill Thomas.

Current supervisor , Sterling Goodspeed, remembers when people didn’t know there was a village at the base of Gore Mountain.

“The world just found our village at the base of the mountain,” he said.

Gibson wants repeal of 1099, won’t support Owen’s bill

By Chris Morris Contributing Writer North Country Congr essman Chris Gibson says he wants to er peal the 1099 reporting requirement included in last year's Affordable Care Act. But the Kinder hook Republican won't support a r epeal measure introduced this week by his Democratic colleague, Bill Owens.

The r eporting r equirement, which doesn't take ef fect until 2012, for ces businesses to submit IRS Form 1099s

for every business-to-business transaction of $600 or more.

Owens, who r epresents New York's 23rd Congressional District, says small businesses ar e alr eady overbur dened with tax paperwork and r eporting r equirements.

His r epeal bill would be paid for through a 5.4 percent surcharge on adjusted gr oss income that exceeds $1 million annually for joint tax filers, or $800,000 annually for individuals.

According to Gibson spokeswoman Stephanie V alle, that essentially

amounts to a tax on wealthy Americans.

"Unfortunately, this tax will impact small businesses who file as individuals on their taxes – so basically, turning around and hurting the very people you're trying to help by r epealing the 1099 reporting requirement," she said.

Valle says Gibson supports re pealing the 1099 provision, but not through additional taxes and fees.

He's curr ently cosponsoring similar legislation to repeal the measure.

Authorities: couple abused welfare system

QUEENSBURY — Daniel B. Saville, 58, and Lisa M. Ir eland, 46, were charged last week with the theft of more than $175,000 in public assistance benefits over mor e than five years, accor ding to the Warren County Daniel B. Lisa M. Sheriff’s Office.

Saville Ireland The woman collected rent subsidies to live at 946 West Mountain Road in Queensbury, which she rented from Saville, but actually lived with him at his Lupine Lane residence, police said.

Ireland was arraigned Jan. 27 on one count of second-degr ee Welfare Fraud, 15 counts of second-degree Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument and 24 counts of first-degree Offering a False Instrument.

The following day, Saville was arraigned on one count of thir ddegree Grand Larceny, one count of third-degree Welfare Fraud, and six counts of first-degree Offering a False Instrument.

Both were released on $1,000 cash bail and scheduled to r eturn to Warren County Court on March 11.

The investigation was conducted by Warren County Sheriff's Office investigator Kevin Conine, Lt. C. Shawn Lamouree, Warren County Social Service investigators Lisa Zulauf and Elizabeth Burke and the Warren County District Attorney's Office.

Biker group donates to High Peaks Hospice QUEENSBURY — For the fourth year, the local chapter of the Adirondack Harley Owners' Group (HOGS) has made a significant donation to High Peaks Hospice & Palliative Care.

Nadine Szewczyk, senior r oad captain with the HOGs, pr esented the annual donation r ecently to Sunday Conine, development coordinator with the hospice group.

In addition, High Peaks Hospice is asking for the community's support in partnering for their Annual Motorcycle Rally. In recognition of the or ganization's 25th anniversary, the event is being reorganized. Volunteers are sought to help plan and conduct the event.

North Creek Depot Museum awarded grant NORTH CREEK — The Glens Falls Foundation has awarded the North Creek Depot Museum $2,000 toward the repair of the museum’s wooden platform. The Glens Falls Foundation is a nonprofit community trust.

The Depot Museum launched a capital campaign in 2010 to raise nearly $21,000 for the removal and replacement of the platform that surrounds the museum building and extends into the train yard. ACC unveils Tech Valley program QUEENSBURY — This semester, ACC launched its Tech Valley Track, a program suited for students who want a Tech Valley job, but aren’t sure what direction to take.

The pr ogram combines a liberal arts education with engineering, math, science and technology. Since last fall, the college has advertised the pr ogram on television, tar geting adults and students in area high schools and has received substantial inter-

est. ACC hopes the program will grow by next fall.

•100 Years Ago – February, 1911• American aviator splashes down J.A.D. McCurdy, the American aviator who attempted to fly fr om Key W est, Fla. to Havana, Cuba in an aer oplane, dropped into the sea in plain sight of Havana harbor , 10 miles from the town and six miles of f the coast. His supply of lubricating oil had become exhausted necessitating his descent. A wind which blew six or seven miles an hour retarded the flight of the machine causing the exhaustion of the supply of oil.

When McCur dy landed on the surface of the sea he r etained his seat. He was picked up by the cr ew of the U.S. torpedo boat destroyer, Terry. President Gomez of Cuba was on board the boat to shake McCurdy’s hand in congratulations.

Among the first colonists to discover Kellum Pond wer e Mr. and Mrs. Lester Ralph. The gentleman has attained mor e than average success as an artist while his talented wife has won, befor e her marriage, considerable fame as a newspaper woman.

Mrs. Ralph, the former Miss Elsie Reasener, was not here last summer because she was in London where she is rapidly winning a place among the finest sculptors in the world.

(Note …“Bohemian” was a term used to denote a gypsy, a person of artistic tastes who lives in an unconventional manner. Elsie Ralph must have been to W arrensburgh what artist Georgia O’Keef fe was later in the 1920’s to Lake Geor ge.

Warrensburgh was also the home of M.J. Fitzpatrick, a famous veteran actor and vaudeville artist. “Fitz” tour ed the country from Maine to California and played on the stages of the leading theatres of the principal cities.)

Quinlivan has donated her original pastel entitled “Foxy Lady” to the Center for the purposes of helping to raise funds. The original pastel will be the subject of a silent auction that will run throughout the show. The winner will be announced at the close of the artist’s reception, 6 to 7 p.m.

Quinlivan sums up the rationale for her devotion to the pastel medium when she says, “The ability to deliver color brilliance combined with the immediacy of the pastel medium allows me creative spontaneity — I get to deliver to the full spectr um of color that I see. To me, this is the gift of the artist to the viewer.”

INDIAN LAKE — The 6th annual Jalapeno Eating contest will r eturn Sunday, Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. at Marty’s Chili Nights.
