Lake George mayor mulls re-election

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — For four decades, a gentle giant has been at the helm of Lake George Village.

Six-foot-five Robert Blais has served as mayor of the renowned resort municipality since Nixon was in office, the microprocessor was invented, and the U.S. Jaycees presented Elvis Presley with an Outstanding Young Man award.

He’s the longest serving mayor in New York State, according to a spokesperson for the state Conference of Mayors, who could only gasp when hearing this week that Blais was first elected mayor in 1971 after serving several years as a village trustee.

Local contractor envisions new community center

By Patrick Freebern denpubs@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — Local youth and seniors alike may someday have a new social hangout, as a new community center is envisioned for the heart of town.

Local contractor Ed Corlew said this week he hopes to renovate the historic Bonnie Brae barns, which have stood on Main Street for over 140 years, and turn them into a multi-purpose facility that will cater to all ages.

Whether the building would be redeveloped for use as an after-school activity center for teenagers, a home-base for the local Fifty-Plus Club, or a local soup kitchen, Corlew said he’s determined to make it happen.

Located next to the well-known Oscar's Smoke House, the barn was once counterpart to a grand villa which burned to the ground in 1980, leaving the barn standing alongside a few other small structures.

Before restoration can begin, however, the matter of funding must be addressed, Corlew said. “This is for the community,” he said, “but I'm not Bill Gates.”

Corlew continued that he might have to sacrifice his construction business to get the project going. However, he added that he hopes the project will eventually fund itself.

“It's do or die,” he said.

Initially, Corlew is seeking to form a community-based plan for the center ’s development, and for that reason he is ready to form a citizen’s advisory committee.

“I have to get people involved and get a lot of input to determine what’s needed in town,” he said Monday.

He said he’s seen the operations of Adirondack Youth Center, which offers various after-school games, basketball, computer instruction, ping-pong and air hockey, as well as meals and special events, in an adult-supervised setting. Such offerings

should be available in Warrensburg, he said.

Corlew said that as soon as this summer, he will be seeking able-bodied people to lend a hand in reconstructing the barn.

“It's the beginning that's always the tough part,” he said, gesturing toward the old building which has boarded-up entrances and peeling paint. “We need volunteers yesterday!”

There's a lot of work to be done, however, as the structure, owned by his sister Laureen Colbert, is uninsulated, old, and deteriorating.

Corlew gazed at the barn, which needs siding, interior walls, electrical work and plumbing, for starters.

“If we could get some volunteers, we could show people we mean business,” he said noting those seeking to get involved can reach him at 260-2785. “I’d like to see this barn turned into something people enjoy — it would really help the community.”

Warrensburg Central to hold Marathon Dance this weekend All-nighter includes contests, stunts

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — For months, a group of parents and students have been forming plans for a night-long celebration of life, music and movement known as the Warrensburg High School Marathon Dance.

Open to students in grades seven through 12, the debut event is modeled after the immensely successful South Glens Falls Marathon Dance that’s raised millions of dollars for various charities.

Warrensburg’s version, titled “Dancing to Make a Difference,” is set for 7 p.m. Saturday Jan. 15 in the Warrensburg High School Gymnasium, and it’s expected to extend until 7 a.m. Sunday morning.

The event is to include a public session for several hours at the beginning of the event, complete with staged events,

live and silent auctions of donated goods, raffles, games and stunts.

The dance registration proceeds are to be donated to the North Country Hardship Fund, founded by North River resident Wayne Bukovinsky, victim of a 2008 motorcycle crash.

The charity aids families who have undergone sudden tragedies. Proceeds from the auctions and raffles are going to support Warrensburg Central’s PRIDE behavior-boosting program. PRIDE committee members, along with WCS 11th graders, are primarily responsible for planning the event.

About 150 students, most from Warrensburg High, have signed up for the event, which is open to youth of all communities.

Terri Leguire, one of the adults planning the marathon, said local school district employee Karen Bailey, who has given inspirational speeches at the South Glens Falls marathon dance, will be giving a similar kickoff presentation at the Warrensburg event. Bailey, a cancer survivor, was a 2004 recipient of the South Glens Falls event’s proceeds.

The South Glens Falls Marathon Dance, thriving since the 1970s, raised $283,407 in 2010 alone for charity, and has raised $2.2 million through its long run.

A Vermont radio station will be providing deejays to keep the students gyrating virtually non-stop.

Local parent Terri LeGuire, one of the marathon dance organizers, said she hopes the event will become an area tradition, as its forerunner in South Glens Falls has.

“I’m hoping this will be held annually and grow through the years,” she said, noting the generosity of area businesses, who have donated cash and food for dancers as well as goods and services for the auctions and raffles.

High School Principal Doug Duell said the marathon dance offered vital life-lessons to the students, and that he wasn’t likely going to be duct-taped to the gymnasium wall as part of the event, as was reported to the media.

“Its a great opportunity for our kids to learn about service to the community and do some good for people who need a boost,” he said.

Museum seeks memorabilia, Chamber elects officers Stony Creek Library fills position

he Church of the Holy Cross youth group will be holding an Italian dinner on Saturday Jan. 29 at 5 p.m. The dinner will include soup or salad, a choice of lasagna, Fettuccine Alfredo, spaghetti with meat sauce or plain sauce, or a combination plate, plus bread, coffee and tiramisu or cannoli for dessert. The charge is $7 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

This fundraiser is intended to help offset expenses of a Youth Works mission trip this summer, in which youth help upgrade or clean up homes of the needy.

Youth Works is also sponsoring fundraisers involving Burger King coupons, and an raffle set for spring, with prizes featuring works of art donated by area artists.

Museum seeks citizens memorabilia The Warrensburgh Museum of Local History will be open Thursday, Feb. 3 between 6 and 8 p.m. as an installment of the facility’s "First Thursday" sessions, which offer convenient evening hours. Refreshments will be served.

The Museum staff is now seeking to borrow photos and memorabilia for their upcoming exhibit on Stock Car Racing at Ashland Park, once located southwest of Ashe’s Hotel.

Also, folks are welcome would to bring in old family portraits for Museum staff to scan while they wait. Such items add to the community’s collective knowledge of Warrensburg's history.

The Stony Creek Free Library announced this week the appointment of Lisa Bartow of Hadley as library director.

She has accepted the position following the recent retirement of Norma Hastings who served the as library director for 34 years. Lisa Bartow and her husband Brian have been very active in leading local area spiritual youth groups, and they’ve spearheaded mission trips to Haiti -both long before and after the tragic earthquakes of January 2010 occurred.

The trustees of the Stony Creek Library will meet on Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. and all are welcome to attend.

Museum of Dance to host antiques show The National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame, located at 99 South Broadway in Saratoga Springs, is hosting its second annual Winter Antique Show. Event hours are Friday Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday Jan. 29 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the show is $5 for the public; museum members are admitted free of charge.

Beware of fraudulent Internet transactions On Dec. 12, Al and yours truly at Alynn’s Butterfly Bed & Breakfast received a reservation request from someone calling themselves Ann Robinson for several rooms for 10 days, for a sum of about $1,600.

We told her that when we received the check and it cleared we would book the rooms for them. Jan 6 we received a check for $6,800 from a bank in Illinois, with a request to send back a $5,200 balance to a travel agent. I brought the check to a local Warrensburg bank and was told by officials it was fraudulent and to take it to the Sheriff's office. The police told me that luckily I did not try to cash it or send back the $5,200 as requested.

We have been around a while and are aware of scams such as this. We have been in business for almost 12 years and often get fraudulent emails. One was supposedly from 10 Russian priests who wanted to stay for 12 nights, and another was from five couples on a honeymoon.

Unfortunately these scams are proliferating now with the weak economy. Please beware — if any deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. those who receive any questionable emails or requests, contact the county Sheriff ’s office.

Hospice honors HHHN WARRENSBURG — A total of 16 employees of Hudson Headwaters Health Network were recognized recently, as the health care chain’s administrative services director Alison Williams made a donation to High Peaks Hospice on behalf of the group. Blais From page 1 Nearly three years ago, some speculated he’d leave office before the village went through dissolution — to allow the process to take place smoothly, or without bias.

Blais, now 74 years young, stayed on through the village residents’ repeated rejection of disbanding, to face another crisis — the failure of the sewer main along Shepard Park Beach, a spillage with contamination that was met with quick action and brought to resolution.

This past year, Blais said his plans to run for re-election were in limbo, and some folks suspected, again, that he was retiring.

This week, he confirmed that he’s still unsure of his plans of whether he’ll run in the March election.

Blais has had a preliminary diagnosis of cancer, he said, and he may be starting treatment that will make staying in office a hardship.

Monday, Blais said, after meeting with a doctor, he’s likely to have a clearer outlook of what’s ahead, including whether he’ll run for office.

“I’ll be talking to my kids and see what they think about me running again,” he said with a characteristic smile.

4-H offers archery instruction for youth WARRENSBURG — Warren County 4-H is taking reservations for the 4-H archery program they are conducting over three upcoming weeks as an outgrowth of their effort to involve youth in the recreation of shooting sports.

The archery sessions, open to the public, will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursdays Feb. 3, 10 and 17. Children 9 years and over will learn fundamental safety requirements for handling a bow. Bows, arrows, tabs, arm guards, and targets will be provided for this event.

As with all NYS 4-H Shooting Sports programs, Warren County instructors are either nationally or state-certified.

Safety is always the primary focus of the program, according to Cooperative Extension agent John Bowe..

To meet insurance requirements, all participants must be registered 4-H members to participate. There is a $5 fee for non-members which includes a membership in Warren County 4-H. The class is limited to 18 youth. Pre-register by calling 623-3291 or 668-4881.

Lake George names statewide ‘scuba dive trail’ chiefs LAKE GEORGE — The village of Lake George has taken a step toward establishing a program to promote a statewide “scuba dive trail” on behalf of their municipality and five other communities across the state.

The program promotes the communities as underwater destinations for divers and history buffs, while advocating preservation of the sites of historic and environmental significance.

Last week, the village of Lake George selected and contracted with Sharlene and Rob Parker of S & R Underwater of Beaver Dams in Schuyler County, to serve as project coordinators for the state Underwater Blueway Trail Pilot Project.

The selection of this statewide coordinator was undertaken by a committee of dive enthusiasts, archaeological historians, municipal leaders and representatives of state agencies sponsoring the project.

Lake George Mayor Robert Blais said this action was a “significant step” toward establishing a network of managed underwater scuba dive trails, a statewide version of a project that has been developing during recent years in Lake George.

In the project, the village will be working with the cities of Dunkirk, Geneva, Oswego and Plattsburgh, plus the village of Freeport. Those involved will conceive, design and lay out underwater trails in the wa-

ter bodies adjacent to their communities, including the Atlantic Ocean on the South Shore of Long Island, Lake Champlain, Lake Erie, Lake George, Lake Ontario and Seneca Lake.

Under the waters of Lake George, shipwrecks dating back to Colonial times have been examined, documented and steps have been taken toward their preservation.

History enthusiasts have characterized the wrecks as “priceless treasures” that reveal life and warfare in bygone days that offer an exciting viewing experience for divers.

The statewide project begins with documenting underwater cultural resources that

are suitable for frequent visitation, and developing signage, brochures and other informational resources to inform divers, history buffs and the general public.

In announcing the selection of a project coordinator, Blais said the scuba dive trail will generate economic activity that has to date remained virtually untapped in the sponsoring communities.

“The village’s sponsorship of this project is indication of our commitment to enlarging the project to five other water bodies so that each will have a series of interesting, cultural and historic dive sites,” he said. “I look forward to seeing the trail as it develops.”

Cuomo plan heavy on cuts

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com ALBANY — Only a few days in office, Gov. Mario Cuomo has proposed to cut state agencies by 20 percent, enact a state worker pay freeze, pursue ways to reduce costly state mandates on local government, and to redesign Medicaid, which now represents about half the cost of county government expenditures in New York State.

Cuomo’s passionate State of the State speech delivered Wednesday — which included a bleak description of its problems — was interrupted often by applause as he outlined steps to lead New York out of its multi-billion-dollar budget gap.

The plan called for imposing a one-year salary freeze on a large portion of public employees, capping state taxes, and imposing a state spending cap at the rate of inflation.

Cuomo said he would establish a new Spending & Government Efficiency Commission to make state government more efficient, including reducing the number of agencies, authorities, and commissions by one-fifth. The commission must submit a right-sizing plan by May 1.

He also called for the creation of a new Medicaid Redesign Team to find ways to save money within the Medicaid program, based on the approach used in Wisconsin, where Medicaid costs were reduced by $625 million or about 10 percent. The team is to begin work by Jan. 7, and must submit its initial recommendations to Cuomo by March 1.

Cuomo also proposed to attack the quagmire of costly unfunded mandates that are imposed on local governments.

He said a Mandate Relief Redesign Team would be formed to identify reducing ineffective or unnecessary mandates that now present a burden on local taxpayers.The team will include representatives from private industry. He also pledged to reward local governments that save money by downsizing or consolidation through the award of grants for mergers or dissolutions.

Observing that New York State ranks first in the nation in spending on education yet ranks 34th in results, Cuomo proposed re-

serving a portion of state aid for performance-based grants that reward districts for boosting pupil performance or for reductions in expenses.

Cuomo said $250 million would be awarded to schools that excel in boosting pupil achievement, and another $250 million would be granted to schools that slash administrative costs.

Citing that New Yorkers pay some of the highest taxes in the nation, Cuomo proposed a property tax cap that would limit annual increases in taxes to the lesser of two percent or the rate of inflation except by vote of the local citizens or extraordinary capital expenditures.

New York State Association of Counties Executive Director Stephen J. Acquario said for years, county officials have fought for such Medicaid reform and mandate relief.

“These mandates have contributed in large part to the exorbitant property taxes that are forcing families and businesses out of the state,” he said. “NYSAC welcomes Gov. Cuomo’s creation of a team to address the mandates that have overburdened taxpayers and local governments throughout New York, and looks forward to working toward real property tax relief.”

State Sen. Betty Little said such reform as Cuomo imposed was overdue. Citing census figures that show population moving out-ofstate, she said a cap must be imposed on runaway state government spending.

Lawmakers, she said, need to cut or eliminate least-effect programs and services — particularly in light of the state’s $10 billion budget gap.

Little said that the legislature must work with a common goal to make those changes.

“The divisiveness of hyper-partisan politics has to end and be replaced with a constructive dialogue that leads to sensible policy decisions,” she said.

However, lawmakers should avoid budget manipulation that only achieves illusory short-term gains.

“I’m hoping to see a greater emphasis on a long-term strategy to make New York a more affordable place to live and work five, 10 and 20 years from now,” she said.

Festival From page 1 George Jan. 1 for the annual First Day Polar Plunge, and thought these thousands of visitors — and local businesses owners — would enjoy it if a variety of attractions were developed for future years to keep them in the village all day long.

“This could be a huge weekend for Lake George,” Blais said. “We now have 5,000 people annually here in the village for the polar plunge — should we just let them go home after the swim? No way!”

Blais said the Lake George Arts Project could sponsor the event, assuring its artistic integrity as well as its success. He said the event could be a fundraiser for the group, which now sponsors the acclaimed annual Lake George Jazz Weekend.

Holiday lighting show — all season long While Blais was talking about launching the New Year ’s Day fest, Perry and Crocitto proposed to their respective boards the lights-and-sound spectacle for the village, to be presented in recurring weekend shows between Thanksgiving and New Year ’s Eve. The Holiday Lights Spectacle would feature lavish, extensive lighting displays in both Shepard Park and on buildings opposite the park on Canada Street. The tens of thousands of lights would not only offer an ongoing display, but be computer-controlled to be synchronized to recorded music for recurring 15-minute shows, three to four nights per week, they said.

Such shows, like in Florida’s Hollywood Studios and the city of St. Augustine, annually draw tens of thousands of people, Crocitto said.

“A festival of lights like this could draw people from hundreds of miles away,” Crocitto said. Crocitto and Perry showed a DVD recording Monday of such a festival to their respective boards, which responded with enthusiasm.

Crocitto said that during the holiday season, decked-out trolleys could run between Lake George and the outlet malls on state Rte. 9 in Queensbury to shuttle shoppers into the village for the light shows.

Perry said such a festival of lights could be a major boost to tourism.

“This could draw national attention to Lake George,” he said, predicting it could be launched as soon as next November. “It could be a wild success.”

Perry said it would be a vital boost to Lake George businesses in an off-season.

“This could breathe new life into Lake George,” Perry added.

Perry and Crocitto said the lighting display and shows could be bankrolled by occupancy tax receipts. Perry suggested garnering corporate sponsorships — General Electric, he said, would be a natural backer. Crocitto said the cost of the lighting and infrastructure could be bonded by the two municipalities and paid off over several years.

Crocitto estimated the cost of the display and shows and at $50,000 or so annually, with the sum being split between the village and town, and paid for in occupancy tax receipts.

“It will put heads in beds,” he said of the anticipated overnight stays.

Wheeler’s lights pledged to Village In a separate but related matter, Charles Wheeler of Lake George has offered to donate his extensive holiday light displays to the village. Through a local newspaper, he had sought to donate them to a family, but decided that since those responding didn’t have appropriate landscaping to accommodate them, Blais reported, Wheeler decided to give them to Lake George Village to boost the municipality’s annual lighting display in Shepard Park.

Village officials expressed enthusiasm for the donation, and said the display would be welcomed by residents and visitors alike.

•100 Years Ago – January, 1911•

Citizens passed away

He never heard the train approaching Jeremiah Hotchkiss, 70, a deaf-mute of Glens Falls, was instantly killed and mangled beyond recognition Jan. 19, 1911 by a Delaware and Hudson passenger engine near the railroad station in that city. Train engineer John King, said he did not see the man and knew nothing was amiss until he felt a slight jar. The fireman was sent to investigate and found the deaf mute’s mangled body about 15 feet from the engine. It is believed that Hotchkiss was walking the tracks to John St. and no one witnessed the accident. Engineer King ran down and killed another deaf mute on the Platt St. crossing in April, 1910 in Glens Falls. The victim was a resident of Pottersville and his body was taken there for burial.

Undertaker assumed he was dead Owing to a misunderstood telephone message, Edward Chevalley, the proprietor of the well-known roadhouse at stop 17 on the Schenectady-Albany road, who is suffering from cancer, came to his senses the night of Jan. 7, 1911 just in time to ask an Albany undertaker who was at work on his body, what the trouble was. It seems that Chevalley had a severe relapse and his mother, who lives in Albany, was telephoned that her son had died and therefore sent an undertaker to the house. While the undertaker was busy laying out the body, Chevalley suddenly sat up in bed and asked for an explanation.

They turned tail and ran George Boyce started from Wells to go to Thurman and when he arrived at the railroad crossing at The Glen, the northbound passenger train was just leaving the station. The horses became frightened and turned completely around, throwing Mr. Boyce out and he landed in a snow drift uninjured. The team than ran up to the railway track two miles to what is known as the Anderson Brook Bridge. The train came along up and the trainmen found that one horse had fallen through the bridge. They cut the harness, letting that horse down through the bridge. The animal sustained considerable many bruises. The other horse, above the bridge, was unhurt. Mr. Boyce hired a horse to hitch with his uninjured horse and continued on his journey to Thurman.

New tuberculosis asylum in North Creek “The Gables,” a building at North Creek owned by Dr. Lee Somerville, was erected by the late Dr. Thomas C. Durant who was at one time president of the Adirondack Railroad.

The Warren County Board of Supervisors recently appropriated $10,000 for its purchase, the property to be used as a County Hospital for tubercular patients. (Note…In the mid-1860s, when Dr. Durant was vice-president of the Union Pacific Company, he is remembered for missing the hammer blow at the golden spike in ceremonies at Promontory Point, Utah. He was however, one of the great men of his day. He died in 1885 in North Creek.)

Stony Creek and thereabouts Louis Bidwell and Miss Isabel Bidwell drove to Stony Creek to visit George Brown.

Charles Smith is stocking his sawmill near Stony Creek in Knowelhurst with logs from his mountain lot above Lester Lyng’s place. The lot was nearly all burned two years ago.

Edgar Ordway has three sick horses. Dr. Pitcher, veterinary surgeon of Warrensburgh, has made one trip over there to see them.

(Note…Dr. Alfred J. Pitcher was supervisor of Warrensburgh from 1908 until 1911. He lived in the little house on Elm St. behind the present day Floyd Bennett bandstand.)

The Rising House is shown in a postcard in 1911, the year a fire was reported to occur in the hotel and tavern, which has been a landmark in Chestertown since 1825. The enlarged hotel, built in 1881 by Milo Graham, still stands today — owned by the children of the late Hugh Ruane — in downtown Chestertown on Main St. Built to accommodate 75 guests, it is one of the oldest buildings in Warren County.

Prominent lady dies - a long time resident Mrs. Emma Hayes, 83, widow of Halsey B. Hayes, died Dec. 15, 1910 of paralysis. She was born in Warrensburgh and spent her whole life here. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Bennett, a respected old settler of the town. Her husband died Feb. 20, 1894. They were parents to 10 children.

Emma Hayes resided with her granddaughter, Mrs. Nelson Dufresne. Full of years, loved by her children and grandchildren and esteemed and honored by a large circle of friends and acquaintances, this good woman has gone to receive the reward assured to those who truly serve the Lord as she has done. Since 1864 she has been a faithful communicant of the Church of the Holy Cross in Warrensburgh.

Wheeling and dealing with horses G.R. Smith of Johnsburgh is the proud owner of the handsomest cutter in town. Chester Mitchell has sold his farm in Minerva to Orrin Kellogg.

Henry Brown, foreman of the Eagle Nest Club’s property at Blue Mountain Lake was recently in Warrensburgh to buy a team and found just what he wanted at the farm of Arthur Morrison. He drove home with a fine pair of horses for which he paid $500. Mr. Morrison bought the team from Eugene Murphy of Chestertown.

In other news, at the home of William LaFlure in Pottersville there is much rejoicing over the arrival of a son who came on Christmas night. The question is, will young LaFlure be as good a horse trader as is his grandfather, Uncle Joe LaFlure?

Lorenzo Hemingway, 88, an old resident of Horicon, died Friday, Jan. 20, 1911 of cancer at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hiram Ross. He has two other daughters and three sons to mourn his loss.

Mrs. Elizabeth Loveland, 79, died of pneumonia Jan. 20, 1911 at the home of John W. Cameron of Athol. Internment was in the Cameron Cemetery.

Mrs. Kezire Murdock, 77, died Saturday, Jan. 21, 1911 of chronic nephritis at the home of her son, Linsey Murdock with whom she resided in Warrensburgh.

William Lackey, 88, died Jan. 25, 1911 at his home in Johnsburgh. He is survived by two sons, Andrew and Miles Lackey.

Ella K. Ingraham, 3, the daughter of Mrs. Carrie Ingraham and a grandchild of John H. Pasco, died Jan. 25, 1911 of typhoid fever in North Caldwell. The father died of the same disease about three years ago in Glens Falls.

News roundabout The men and teams around Riverbank are very busy drawing logs to the river and wood and pulp wood to Warrensburgh. Arvin Hutchins has commenced drawing pulp from Mill Creek Pond. Wallace Tucker of North Thurman has been working in the lumber woods at Cedar Lakes. The sleighing is fine.

The new 1910 census says that there are 32,252 people in Warren County. Thurman has 805, Stony Creek has 858 and Chestertown has 1,731 people. There are 2,385 citizens in Warrensburgh and 1,482, a combined total in Lake George and Caldwell.

John Hastings, the young son of Frank Hastings, is recovering from pneumonia. T.J. Converse of North Creek is very ill with the grippe, which has settled in his face and head.

Fred Duell and Earl May caught a nice string of fish in South Horicon. George Will of Johnsburgh has a yearling colt that weighs 840 pounds.

The chimney was very hot for several hours after the fire was put out.

Burgers store at 26 Warren St., Glens Falls has new solid oak dining room tables with claw feet on sale for $8.98.

E.A. Knight of Lake George has a used Knox runabout automobile for sale. It is air-cooled, single cylinder, 10 horsepower, in fine condition with a jump seat for two extra passengers. It has a side steering lever and is guaranteed to climb any hill, all for $100. He also has a classy little Reo roadster for only $200.

There was yet another fire scare the morning of Jan. 17, 1911 in Chestertown when the chimney of Mrs. Rising’s house burned out and filled the house with smoke.

sincerely hope you’ve noticed some improvements to your free community newspaper from Denton Publications recently. Through the last several months our senior managers and editors have been discussing our papers’ news content and how we can best serve the communities where we distribute the papers. In most of those communities fewer than 20 percent of the homes receive a daily newspaper. Between radio and television broadcast schedules and limited high speed Internet connections in our rural areas, it may be difficult to keep up on all the local news.

Since our newspapers reach nearly 100 percent of the homes in the region and are read regularly by 83 percent of those homes according to our 2010 CVC Readership Audit, no other medium can match the saturation coverage we provide each week.

Additionally, the major benefit to a weekly newspaper in these fast-paced times is the simple fact that we fit around your schedule, not you around us, which is why our publications consistently earn high readership marks.

In our recent self analysis, we realized we needed to — and can do — a better, more efficient job at covering and reporting local news.

A few locally written articles and a couple of press releases just aren’t good enough, especially in these times. We need to provide a complete recap of all the major news affecting the area, a better sports roundup, more photographs, death and birth notices and unique human-interest features generated by our news staff.

We also reached the conclusion that our editorial staff needed to work more as a news-gathering team rather than stand-alone reporters with little or no connection to each other.

The first step in our reclamation process was to empower our Managing Editor John Gereau by removing the many chore functions he handles daily and allowing him greater control over the news staff. John began his news career with the Times of Ti before moving on to the Post Star as one of their lead reporters. To assist John we’ve recently hired Andy Flynn, former VIC public relations director and former managing editor for the Adirondack Daily Enterprise and Lake Placid

News. Andy will serve as John’s immediate backup and will share administrative duties while bringing his many years of writing and editing to our solid local team. We anticipate his influence over our local coverage will take shape quickly in the near future.

Keith Lobdell has rejoined the team after spending several years as editor of the Whitehall Times, part of the Manchester Newspaper Group. In the short time Keith has been back at the helm of the Valley News, we’ve seen a sharp increase in story count and improved sports coverage. Keith’s impact on the northern papers has made quite an impression on how to crank out news copy and cover a wide region.

Joining Lobdell in our northern group is Jeremiah Papineau, Sarah Cronk, and Chris Morris. Rounding out our news team to the south are 30-plus year veterans Fred Herbst, Thom Randall, and Lindsay Yandon and photographer Nancy Frasier.

While most major newspapers are reducing staff and tightening their news coverage, at the same time they are losing subscribers and increasing the amount they charge for the news.

At Denton we believe, with the continued support of the business community, we can increase employment and our news coverage while providing, free delivery of the local news both in print and online.

The major difference between our approach and that of the major dailies in the area revolves around ownership. We are locally owned and managed versus corporately owned by entities who have little or no roots to the community and whose first priority must be to their out-of-town shareholders not their local readers, advertisers or employees.

These are difficult times we are all going through and more and more it’s becoming a Goliath world, with small mom-and-pop local businesses giving way to large corporate chains. Our goal here at Denton Publications is to remain strong, serve our communities and continue the tradition of a free press here in the North Country.

Upgrades weighed for Edgecomb Pond dam

By Patrick Freebern denpubs@denpubs.com BOLTON — The state’s recent reclassification of Edgecomb Pond Dam as a “highhazard”structure has triggered a requirement of the town of Bolton to conduct an engineering analysis, undertake safety upgrades, and prepare an emergency action plan in the case of a dam breech.

Edgecomb Pond Dam has been holding back drinking water without incident in Bolton since 1979. Following the failure of the Hadlock Pond Dam in 2005, the state Department of Environmental Conservation instituted tighter regulations for all dams, and the process prompted the re-classification. Responding to the state mandate, the town of Bolton hired C.T. Male Associates of Latham to conduct an engineering analysis and recommend upgrades.

Richard Wakeman, vice president of C.T. Male, said Monday that during a 2010 inspection of the dam by DEC, the structure was found to have a spillway design flaw so it didn't conform to New York State dam guidelines and it needed to be reconfigured.

A DEC survey determined that the Edgecomb Pond Dam fit the “high hazard” category because failure of the dam would likely result in widespread damage to homes,

highways, infrastructure and loss of human life and cause substantial economic loss. Estimates cite that three minutes after dam failure, citizens downstream would face the onrush of water.

Although chances of such a severe storm occurring are minimal, extreme rainfall could threaten the lives and property of downstream residents, Wakeman said.

“There will have to be some revisions made to allow the event to pass without over-topping the dam,” Wakeman said. “An auxiliary spillway to the south will need to be put in place.”

Wakeman told town board members earlier this year that regardless of the change in the classification, the DEC requires that the spillway has to withstand water flow associated with a 100-year storm event, or onehalf of a probable maximum flow of 33.6 inches of rainfall over 72 hours.

Such a storm event might send water five feet deep over the spillway, causing the embankments to collapse and the dam to fail.

The DEC requires all dams to have an emergency action plan in case of an extreme storm event. This plan was submitted to DEC before an Aug.19 deadline, Wakeman said Monday. In the unlikely event of an emergency, he added, the plan allows citizens and officials to be notified “ahead of time, not after.”

Sen. Little’s clout boosted

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com ALBANY — With the state Senate now back in Republican hands, G.O.P. stalwart Sen. Betty Little of Queensbury will sit on one of the two most influential committees of the legislative body’s upper house.

After speaking at a legislative breakfast Jan. 7 in Saranac Lake, Little confirmed that she has been appointed to the Senate Finance Committee. Any bill that involves spending money must pass the Finance Committee before reaching the floor. Legislators from the committees on Rules and Finance have influence over almost every item of legislation that moves through the Senate.

Also, as of Monday, Little was selected to chair the Senate Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism and Parks and Recreation, she said. With Little leading tourism, entities like the state Olympic Regional Development Authority could experience more secure funding.

State: Stop buying land To the editor: The seemingly universal accolades for New York State’s acquisition at the end of December of development rights from 87,000 acres of forest land in the Adirondacks—at a cost of $30 million—deserves some criticism.

Why is the state spending this sum to eradicate land rights when the state has been unable to balance its budget without firings, program cutbacks, and passing down unfunded mandates that are strangling local governments?

And, why is the state further strangling land ownership in towns already suffering from too much state land ownership? Take Stony Creek, for instance. The state already owns 53 percent of the land, and, with this acquisition, has additionally prohibited all economic activity except logging and limited recreation on 1,230 acres.

The Stony Creek Town Board passed a resolution requesting that the state not acquire conservation easements along Hildebrandt Road, an actively maintained town highway that connects Stony Creek to Athol, where, according to my husband Peter LaGrasse, the chairman of Stony Creek’s Board of Assessors, the APA rules would allow a total of only 12 houses to be built in Stony Creek along highway frontage on 507 acres of land with good characteristics for building.

The state could have acquired the development rights to the back land and left the road frontage intact, but instead it simply eradicated this modest building potential, although it could be so important in a town of under 700 residents that is held back by the Adirondack Park Agency’s high bars to development.

In essence, whenever the state acquires conservation easements, the state is eradicating the much-coveted, very limited development potential allowed by the Adirondack Park Agency’s land-use bible, the “Land Use and Development Plan Map and State Land Map.” The so-called Adirondack “Park” includes six million acres of land, of which three million acres are owned by the state as “forever wild.” Up until December, the state had acquired 700,000 acres of conservation easements in addition to this forever wild land. Now the state has added another 87,000 acres.

The state should not buy one more acre of land in the Adirondacks, neither in full title nor as conservation easements. The Legislature should wake up and look at the lost biodiversity, the lost hunting, and the loss of potential state revenue by refusing to sustainably harvest the rich timber resource of the forever wild land.

North Warren’s ‘Sock Hop’ set for Jan. 15

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN — Students at North Warren High School are bringing back an event this weekend that celebrates the music and culture of the 1950s and 1960s.

The students are seeking to recreate the fun and frolic of the era by presenting a Sock Hop Dinner & Dance, beginning at 5 p.m. Jan. 15 in the North Warren gym.

The event, now in its ninth year, is a fundraiser for the MOAS social studies and leadership class at the school, and proceeds are expected to fund the group’s trip to Washington,

D.C. Dancing to music, American Bandstand style, follows dinner. Attendees are welcome to wear poodle skirts and white bucks, sport DA haircut and suede shoes.

It is anticipated that photos will be taken of people in their vintage attire.

The event also includes an auction of “Pies by Guys” or various baked baked goods homemade by male students and students’ fathers.

“These baked items will be untouched by female hands,” said North Warren MOAS instructor Bernie McCann. This portion of the fundraiser netted $400 last year, he said. Annually, about 150 to 200 people attend the Sock Hop, mcCann re-

ported.

“This year, I’ll be teaching people how to dance The Stroll,” McCann said.

The MOAS Class is a college-level course taken through SUNY Plattsburgh. Students attend a Model Organization of American States meeting in June to prepare resolutions and argue for them at a mock summit in June. It is an opportunity for students to learn more about international relations and politics while developing public speaking skills.

Schroon River history lecture slated for Jan. 20 WARRENSBURG — Mike Prescott, a state licensed guide, will offer a presentation titled "Armchair Paddler of the Schroon River" on Thursday Jan. 20, to the Warrensburgh Historical Society. The event will be held at Grace's Restaurant, 3 Hudson St., beginning at 7 p.m.

The Schroon River, which flows through Warrensburg and serves as part of the town's eastern border, is more than 60 miles long, and part of the Hudson River watershed. The history of human interaction with the Schroon River is rich with stories of Adirondack logging, industry, tourism, and community development.

Prescott’s talk will be illustrated with vintage photos and postcards, as well as contemporary photography that shows what a paddler today would experience along the river.

Also included will be discussion of the Warrensburg industries powered by the Schroon and the two major dam proposals, which, had they been built, would have drastically changed the landscape of towns to the north of Warrensburg, and should they have failed, would likely have wiped out the entire hamlet of Warrensburg.

Prescott is a retired school principal. He spent 34 years working with young people, first as a history teacher and then as a secondary school principal. Mike is an enthusiast of the history of Adirondack lakes, rivers, and streams.

InBrief Brant Lake Taxi breaks record CHESTERTOWN — The phone rang off the hook this past week at Brant Lake Taxi as party-goers ushered in the new year. Traveling upwards of 1,000 miles in a nine-hour period, four taxi drivers of the firm gave safe passage to 214 people, a nearly 160-rider increase since the company's “Operation Safe Ride” began in 2008.

Brant Lake Taxi Manager Mike Turano said Tuesday that not everyone was aware of the free rides. “A group of people up from New York City were very surprised,” he noted, but explained that many locals already knew about the program. This past summer, Brant Lake Taxi was given a letter of acknowledgment by the Warren County Sheriff's Office for its New Year's program, and were cited by Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward for general safe service to the upper Warren region.

With the support of local businesses, Turano hopes to continue the annual service.

“We don't want to leave anyone stranded,” he declared. “Of course we want to make sure they all get home safely.”

LAKE GEORGE — The Warren County Sheriff ’s Office has developed an e-mail newsletter to be issued several times per year. The goal of this initiative, sheriff Bud York said Monday, is to develop relationships with the community by providing important messages and announcements.

“Communication is key,” said York said.

“And with so many people using the Internet for information, an electronic newsletter makes sense.”

Stories, safety tips, pictures, web links, and much more will be featured in the newsletter.

Schroon Chamber plans social The Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce is holding a a Winter Social Gathering on Thursday Jan. 20 at Witherbee's Carriage House Restaurant.

Science teacher takes icy plunge

LAKE GEORGE — A holiday wrap recycling drive at Warrensburg High School has resulted in environmental science teacher John Burns pledging to plunge into the icy waters of Lake George.

The contest, pitting the faculty against the students over the volume of trash collected, ended up with the students garnering the victory.

While the faculty did well, collecting a pile about 6 feet high and nearly seven feet in diameter, the WCS students collected a pile about 1`6 feet across and 6.5 feet high.

Burns pledged to jump into Lake George at 3 p.m. Saturday Feb. 5 in connection with the Lake George Winter Carnival’s polar swim that day.

Meanwhile the students have been sorting through the holiday trash and pulling out substances that aren’t recyclable, Burns said. the paper waste is shredded into home insulation, while other materials are recycled according to best practices recommended by authorities.

The celebration was held at Spare Time Bowling Lanes in Lake George with family and friends. The celebration had a great turnout, it was reported, and a wonderful time was had by all who attended.

Back to the land of ice and snow

A

fter a brief thaw, snow cover has returned to the North Country, and with it comes a host of activities from skiing and sliding to snow forts and snowball fights.

Unfortunately, across much of the region, there has not yet been enough snow cover to accommodate snowmobiles. In Ray Brook, the railroad tracks in my backyard have remained untracked, except for the passing wildlife.

When it comes to Adirondack winter tourism, white brings the green! Although the list of recreational options is severely limited by a lack of snow, it pays to remember that there is still a lot of winter left and there are still a lot of opportunities available.

Currently, the majority of the region’s lake and ponds have good ice cover, and I’ve received numerous reports of some nice fish being taken on the early ice.

Cross-country skiers, snowshoers and skaters have been busy, as have the ice climbers and backcountry skiers. Fortunately, the weather has been cold enough for communities to maintain municipal ice rinks, and elsewhere, the pond hockey season is in full swing.

The Northville-Placid Trail Although I’m not much of a computer geek, I recently came across an interesting new Web site created by Tom Wemett, a self professed “NPT fanatic.”

The Web site, www.nptrail.org, is dedicated to the Northville-Placid Trail, (NPT), which originally spanned nearly 133 miles of the Adirondack backcountry. The trail, which was designed and constructed by Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) volunteers beginning in 1921. It was completed in 1923 as one of the ADK’s first projects.

The NPT still serves to connect a variety of Adirondack communities and habitats, from lakes to mountains, valleys to

swamps and all points between. But, unlike the more mountainous trails that dominate the High Peaks area, the NPT is primarily a ‘valley romp’ that travels primarily through the river valleys and lowland forests surrounding the ponds and lakes of the region.

The trail was constructed to take advantage of rail transportation, with the terminus at both ends beginning at the local New York Central Railroad stations of the two communities. In 1923, there were only a few good roads in the Adirondacks, and cars were nowhere near as prevalent as they are today.

Although The NPT was originally 133 miles long, the southern end now begins in Upper Benson, a few miles north of Northville. The north end is the Chubb River bridge on the Averyville Road in Lake Placid, a few miles from the old train station. These changes diminish the trail’s total distance to about 121 miles, but it also reduces the hiking on highways.

Despite the fact that the trail will be a century old in 2011, it may actually be “wilder” today, than when it was first developed.

In the 1920’s, lumbering was still a major Adirondack industry and much of the land, and the rivers bore industrial scars, or burned over lands.

In fact, many sections of trail incorporated old logging roads that had been designed by “road monkeys”, those talented wood’s engineers that utilized the terrain so that horses could efficiently haul log sleds. As a result of the monkey’s marvelous engineering, the NPT is also one of the finest backcoutry ski trails in the country.

Although the trail has experienced numerous reroutes and changes over the years, it remains true to its origins. For hikers interested in a complete “end to

end” experience, the NPT provides one of the finest experiences in the eastern United States.

The trail, developed to pass near various communities and cross a few roads, makes it easy restock supplies. Some hikers purchase provisions in towns along the route, while others deposit food caches near highway crossings in advance.

While the route typically takes about two and a half weeks to complete, the growing popularity of trail running has greatly diminished this time.

In 2005, Tim Seaver, a photographer from Vermont, covered the route in 37 hours, 31

OUTDOORS • ADIRONDACK JOURNAL - 15 minutes with the assistance of a support crew. In 2009, Drew Haas of Jay, a founder of the Adirondack Trail Running Club, completed the 135-mile Northville-Placid Trail in 60.5 hours, Unaided. Hass only slept for about 6 hours during his epic run.

Although the trail crosses a few highways and passes through a couple of communities along the route, it takes travelers through some wild and remote country.

Over the years, I’ve tackled sections of the route to access Spruce Lake, Silver Lake, Cedar Lake, Tirrell Pond, Moose Pond, Duck Hole and the Cold River.

In addition to outstanding opportunities for hiking and skiing, the NPT also provides numerous opportunities for anglers to pursue backcountry brook trout in their native habitat.

Burghers fall short as they host wrestling tourney

By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — The Warrensburg High School wrestling team hosted a busy, successful annual Burgher duals meet Saturday, as over 400 wrestlers were matched up with four opponents each for a day full of action.

The outcome, however, fell short of expectations for the Burghers as they tallied a 1-3 team record for the day, Coach Mark Trapasso said.

“The outcome was downright ugly,” he said, noting his squad should have beaten one of their opponents, Albany Academy, as several Burgher wrestlers were up by wide margins of 7-0 or 11-2 and then were suddenly pinned for a loss. Other matches were nearly even, and could have been in the winning column with a little more effort, he added.

Hudson Falls won the tournament by a solid margin. They set the tone in the first matchup by crushing the Burghers by a score of 72-3. Beecher Baker recorded the Burgers’ only points against Hudson Falls, by decisioning his opponent.

For the day, four Warrensburg wrestlers scored 2-2 in their matches: Jon Vaisey at 103 pounds, Nick Nedelcu at 119, Lucas Nelson at 160, and Tony Auricchio at 285.

Matt McGowan scored 17 points and Alex Hladik contributed 13 in the decisive victory. Ryan Moll added eight; Aaron Chambers scored seven; J.D.Jenkins chipped in six; Matt Stover, four; Jeff Maldonado, three; while Erik Jones and Pete Fisher added two each.

Stover finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while McGowan recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The athletic Alex Hladik scored 15 points for the Warriors, and backcourt powerhouse Jeff Maldonado tallied 11.

With the win, Lake George advanced to 6-0 in the league and 8-0 overall, and Hartford receded to 4-1 and 5-2 respectively. Lake George won the Junior Varsity matchup.

Fort Ann 54, North Warren 33 CHESTERTOWN -- Despite waging a tough battle Jan. 4, North Warren couldn’t get traction against a steely Fort Ann defense — the team is a leader in the Adirondack League — and lost a boys basketball game 54 to 33. Fort Ann established a 15-3 first-quarter lead, and the Cougars couldn’t bounce back.

Travis Monroe led the Cougar effort with 10 points. Ethan Schenke, Joe Aiken and Nick Sapienza each hit a three-pointer in the effort.

With the loss, North Warren slipped to 0-5 in the league and 1-6 overall for the 2011 season.

Warrensburg 50, Salem Central 35 SALEM -- Rebounding from several recent losses, the Warrensburg boys basketball team picked up a solid mid-season win Jan. 4 as they defeated Salem 50-35.

Ryan Belden scored 19 points and Mike Curtis contributed 15 in the victory. John Joseph scored 11 points in the matchup.

With the win, the Burghers advance to 2-3 in the Adirondack League and 3-5 overall. Warrensburg’s Junior Varsity won their matchup.

At 125, Freshman Burgher newcomer Denver Berry pinned Tyler Streeter in one minute flat with a fast, muscular headlock.

Berry, Coach Trapasso said, is improving by the week.

At 130 pounds, Hunter Roberts (ME) decisioned Masyn Morey with a score of 9-0. At 135, Rod Buyea (ME) decisioned Will Yarmowich with a tally of 15-6. Yarmowich, a varsity rookie, is one of the freshmen on the team who are making waves this year. At 140 pounds, Chris Robinson of Warrensburg pinned Brian Schenk in 3:32 in a hard-fought matchup.

At 145, J.T. Metz (ME) pinned Jerico Converse in 2:18. At 160, Lucas Nelson won a technical fall by running up a 18-3 score over Nick Krause (ME) in 4:38. At 171 pounds, Burgher Jack Eaton won by an injury default after his Morrisville-Eaton opponent Mitch VanWormer complained about his ribs and couldn’t continue. At 189 pounds, Burgher Desmon Allen won by technical fall in 6 minutes over Colin Pearsall, which pleased Trapasso.

“I’m encouraged by this win,” he said.

At 285 pounds, Tony Auricchio of Warrensburg decisioned his opponent Wyatt Morris 9-0.

Despite the 1-3 record for the day, Trapasso said his wrestlers are gaining skills and experience, and he has solid expectations for the Sectional tournaments to be held a number of weeks ahead.

“We still haven’t gotten where we need to get,” he said. “But when Sectionals roll around, we hope to be competitive.”

SALEM -- Lake George combined savvy passing and solid defense to defeat Salem Jan. 7 in a decisive 47-24 victory.

Key to the win was a 13-2 effort put forth by the Warriors in the the third quarter.

In the victory, Warrior Caroline Murphy led all players with 23 points and Brittany Baker contributed 12. Kelly Flaherty and Chelsea Sipowicz contributed four points apiece, Amanda Chambers added two, and Hahnah Saroff and Melanie Ferris each chipped in a foul shot.

With the win, Lake George advanced to 6-1 in the Adirondack League and 6-4 overall. Salem dropped to 2-5 and 2-6 respectively. The Warriors’ Junior Varsity won their matchup.

Warriors down Hartford QUEENSBURY — In a recent critical Adirondack League matchup, the Lake George Girls Basketball Team demonstrated why their coaches have annually pitted them against far larger, talented squads early on every season. During the recent holiday break, Lake George was pitted against such A-teams as Queensbury, South Glens Falls and Greenwich.

Weathering such battles — and learning how to apply every ounce of talent and energy to survive, the Warrior players not only gain skills and hone their reflexes, but the games in the Adirondack League become less of a challenge.

Jan. 5 during an ACC Adirondack Jamboree game versus Hartford, Lake George put such experience to work. They crushed the Tanagers 39-19 with a vicious defense and solid team play.

Caroline Murphy exemplified the effort of all the team members. She recorded eight steals and two blocks in the victory, which began with a 7-0 lead. After the Tanagers fought back and contained the Warriors for a stretch, the Lake George girls responded with a 14-5 advantage in the second quarter.

With the win, Lake George improved to 5-1 in the league and 5-4 overall. Hartford slipped back to 4-2 in the league and 5-2 overall. Sophomore Relief player Hahnah Saroff led all scorers with 10 points, a Varsity career high. The talented guard also tallied eight rebounds and three steals. Brittany Baker contributed nine points and Kelly Flaherty added seven, and Caroline Murphy tallied six. Amanda Chambers, Courtney Laczko and Melanie Ferris each added two and Chelsea Sipowicz chipped in a foul shot.

Wrestling action Corinth Central 55, Warrensburg 30 WARRENSBURG -- The Warrensburg Squad put up a good fight against Corinth central, unbeaten in Adirondack League action, and tallied a respectable score as they lost 5530 in a Jan. 5 matchup.

Emergency squad’s tearful last sanctioned run?

T

he Thurman Emergency Squad made their last official outing on behalf of the town Dec. 31 when they picked up a lady on High Street Dec. 31.

The lady was having difficulty breathing and after 911 was called, the squad immediately responded. One member stopped in ahead of the ambulance as she had oxygen to administer for the patient. Within minutes, several local Emergency Medical Technicians were on the scene. Maria Ligon expresses heartfelt thanks to Barb Baker, Skip Bessaw, John Kindred and to all of the crew who were compassionate and knew exactly what to do and what care was needed. Thanks to all the emergency responders, and may the Thurman Emergency Squad soon be up and running again on behalf of local town government — Thurman needs you!

Later it was learned that the Thurman Town Board had canceled the compensation insurance as of 2011 on the squad members. If you are ill, call 911, but the Warrensburg Emergency Squad is the agency to respond, as the town ended its tradition of contracting for service with the Thurman Emergency Medical Services. Of course, if you have good neighbors they could take you by car.

A petition was presented to the Thurman Town Board Dec. 2 with over 277 signatures signed by year-round residents requesting the town retaining the local emergency squad, but the board decided otherwise.

I am getting numerous calls on this issue. One caller said the Board doesn’t seem to care about its residents. another suggested this issue should be put before a public vote. Christmas after spending 10 days with her son and family in Roseville, Calif. She enjoyed spending time with Marc Jr. and Jeana, and playing with 3-year-old Gibson and 17month-old Lauren.

Brandon Beadnell spent the Christmastime holidays in Thurman with his dad, Luke and fiancée Jenny on River Road, and while here Brandon went skiing for the first time — the trip was to Ridin’ Hy ski hill. His cousin threeyear-old Colton also came and spent a play day, plus he had fun at his grandparents, Nancy and Terry Beadnell’s, before returning to his home in Livermore, Maine on New Year ’s Eve.

The Gleaning food distribution program will be held at the Town Hall at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18. This free food program is open to all Thurman residents.

The Extra Helpings food program is also available and now they have several choices for families to choose from.

Volunteers needed for youth activities A decade ago, there were many winter activities for our youth and more volunteers willing to help out.

Think back 10 short years, and we had the Mommy & Me parents and toddlers program, karate classes, a supervised skating rink, a town skiing program, Nature’s Explorers’ Club, plus there were occasional dances, a tutoring program and even a self defense class for women.

Also, there was a YMCA-sponsored bus offering transportation.

Now, these offerings are gone — and much of it is due to lack of volunteers, as well as low participation rates.

If weather permits we may have a sledding hill or a skating rink this season. Those willing to volunteer to help with any activity for our youth, call 623-2249 or 623-4024.
