By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com ALBANY — If you thought 2009 was ugly in the state legislature, buckle up for 2010. With a $3.2 billion shortfall looming and political battles erupting over the budget, 2009 was a troubled year for a financially strapped New York State. And if New Yorkers expect things to get any better when 2010 arrives, they should think again. No doubt, there’s trouble ahead. State politics will ring in the New Year with a flurry of lawsuits from school districts and special interest groups who claim Gov. David Paterson broke the law when he unilaterally froze and slashed state aid payments in December. Governor ’s spokesman Morgan Hook said this week that with the spring state

Plan for new Stewart’s sparks controversy By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — Stewart’s Shoppes is seeking to relocating its Main St. convenience store to a new site on Stewart Farrar Ave. across from the First Presbyterian Church — and the proposal is not without its detractors. Stewart’s proposed new store would be constructed on the 1.2-acre property now owned by Hudson Headwaters Health Network, across Main St. from the Grand Union strip mall and Emerson House Bed & Breakfast. Stewart’s Shoppes official Tom Lewis said Monday that his company has signed a purchase contract to purchase the land from Hudson Headwaters. The plot

Kelly Slater held a surfboard above his head as his friends Tim Goutos and Mitch Hopper, shivering, ran alongside him. “I’m going to ‘hang 10’ today, Slater said as bystanders cheered. “I’m going to catch some waves.” He passed a long line where about 100 were
