McCullough were arrested by officers of the Vermont Drug Task Force in the city of Rutland last week. The arrests, which took place Aug. 27, resulted from two distinct drug investigations. According to Vermont State Police Sgt. Jason Johnson, Mitchell was arrested and cited to answer one felony count of sale of crack cocaine. Both individuals are being prosecuted by the Rutland County State’s Attorney’s Office. “Th is charge stems from an April 2018 drug investigation during which Mitchell sold $200 worth of crack cocaine to a confidential informant,” according to report fi led by Sgt. Ash borer injection available By Lou Varricchio THE V ERMONT EAGLE

Emerald ash borer (EAB), a destructive wood-boring beetle from Asia, has been confi rmed in Vermont. The insect was discovered in Orange County earlier this year and has now spread to Washington and Caledonia counties. It is a matter of time before it reaches Addison, Rutland

and southern Chittenden counties. Vermont officials are concerned about the fate of the state’s estimated 160 million wild and residential ash trees. The lifespan of an ash tree is only five years after it is infected, according to Vermont Urban and Community Forestry Program (VTUCF). VTUCF literature explains that “EAB larvae kill ash trees by tunneling under the bark and feeding on the part of the tree that moves

water and sugars up and down the trunk.” Ash trees make up about five percent of Vermont’s forests. The trees are also grown at home and line many municipal curbsides in our area. According to Danielle Fitzko of VTUCF, “Trees can be protected from EAB, but we want to help people make informed decisions and to do it responsibly.” » Ash borer Cont. on pg. 3

FERRISBURGH | Incumbent Rep. Warren Van Wyck (R-Addison 3) won the Aug. 14 GOP primary on write-in votes alone. At least seven other would-be GOP lawmakers and four Democrats also won write-in nominations. Van Wyck will face incumbent Diane Lanpher (D) and newcomer Matt Birong (D) in the Nov. 6 general election. Van Wyck, a three-term lawmaker from Ferrisburgh ,announced this spring he would not seek reelection. When no other Republican nominees came forward, Rep. Van Wyck threw his hat back into the ring as a write-in candidate. Van Wyck received 105 votes – far more than the 25 needed to qualify. Vermont state law says “a write-in candidate shall not qualify as a primary winner unless he or she receives at least one-half the number of votes as the number of signatures required for his or her office on a primary petition.” State representative candidates must collect 50 signatures. Other successful House and Senate write-in nominees

include Patrick Gilligan of Vernon, 25, received 67 writein votes and will contest Democrat Sarah Coffey for the Windham 1 (Vernon-Guilford) seat. Rep. Mike Hebert chose to not seek reelection. Jim O’Connor (56 votes) will face Nelson Brownell (D) in the Bennington-1 (PownalWoodford) district. O’Connor has twice lost in the general election to Rep. Bill Botzow, who is not seeking re-election. In Colchester, Pam Loranger will join Pat Brennan on the two-seat District 9-2 (Malletts Bay) ballot. Ms. Loranger received 177 votes after another candidate dropped out of the race. Ed Read (25 votes) qualified to receive the nomination for the Washington 7 (Waterbury) district, now held by Rep. Maxine Grad, the chair of House Judiciary. Robert McFadden (30 votes) will face Sandy Haas, vice-chair of Human Services, in the Windsor-Rutland District race. In the Senate election, former Essex Jct. Rep. Paul Dame received 69 write-ins to join Alex Farrell on the GOP slate for Chittenden County. Tyler Colford (55 votes) will challenge incumbent Dem. Sens. Becca Balint and Jeannette White in Windham County. » Van Wyck Cont. on pg. 4
