Vermont Watchdog Report
By Lou Varricchio lou@addison-eagle.com PROCTOR Ñ When the Vermont Marble Museum begins its day-long grand reopening event May 23 , from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., itÕ s going to be one of ProctorÕ s biggest happenings in over a decade. A celebration of food and marble will be a big salute to the little Vermont town that marble businessman, governor, secretary of war, and U.S. Sen. Redfield Proctor helped build. To highlight the big day, WCAX-TV will broadcast live throughout the day from the museum. VermontÕ s homegrown Ben and JerryÕ s will serve ice cream, and three passenger trains will bring passengers to ProctorÕ s Main Street Park. You can climb aboard the train at the Center Rutland DepotÑ home to the Rutland Railroad Museum located behind the Center Rutland Municipal BuildingÑ at 8:30 a.m., 11:30 .am., and 2:30 p.m. The last train from Proctor, to Center Rutland, will depart 5:30 p.m. The big event will include information booths, educational displays, local books and food, community church life, and lots more. MONTPELIER Ñ An investigation into fraudulent applications for Vermont driverÕ s privilege cards has spread to foreign countries, according to the commissioner of the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles. Ò We have seen people from other countries, and we have seen more than just North America as a continent,Ó Commissioner Robert Ide told Vermont Watchdog on Monday. Ò We have seen people that we believe we can trace back to states of the former Soviet Union, and we have seen people who are of Middle Eastern descent who perhaps are still, you know, itÕ s hard to tell where theyÕ re residing.Ó In January, officials at the DMV confirmed discovering more than 100 cases of fraud related to VermontÕ s driverÕ s privilege cards. In every instance, illegal immigrants living outside the state had falsified address information on license applications to obtain the credential. CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

F’burgh artist spearheads ‘local connections’ effort By Lou Varricchio lou@addison-eagle.com NORTH FERRISBURGH Ñ Artist Maxine Davis, owner of Maxine Davis Glass Art in North Ferrisburgh, is on a mission. A long-time resident of Ferrisburgh, DavisÕ stunning glass art is featured, and sought after, in a variety of places including Vermont, such as the Shelburne Museum, and elsewhere, such as various South Carolina galleries. But now the successful artist wants to go beyond art and create a local network and service directory of sortsÑ an effort which will open up to Ferrsiburgh residents goods and services ranging from local bakers to furniture makers (and probably a few candlestick makers, too). Ò My idea is not an AngieÕ s List for Ferrisburgh,Ó DavisÑ Ó MickeyÓ to her friends, said, Ò but when I realized just how many wonderful goods and services there are right here in Ferrisburgh aloneÑ and so few people know about themÑ I decided that we needed to get something going. Ferrisburgh has lots to offer; we have pastry bakers, pizza makers, clothing and furniture makers, carpenters, and so many other folks providing useful goods and services. But
