Driver in Gunners defeat fatal near-permanent accident pleads not gun grab against guilty mentally ill From News & Staff Reports MIDDLEBURY Ñ Whiting resident Nathan Dearing, 27, arrested for driving DUI which resulted in the death of a cyclist in Weybridge during the late afternoon of April 14, plead not guilty to multiple charges, police said. The victim Kelly Boe, 55, was an employee of Middlebury College. He died at Porter Hospital following the accident. According to Lt. Michael Manley of the Vermont State Police, BoeÕ s car Ò crossed the center line and struck the cyclist in his lane of travel.Ó Public court documents appearing on multiple websites April 15 listed DearingÕ s blood alcohol level at 0.11 following the accident. Police said that Dearing informed them that he was drinking at the time. In addition to the DUI and other serious charges stemming from the Weybridge tragedy, Dearing is currently on probation for grand larceny. Also, he has four drivingrelated convictions relating to a suspended license. Dearing had been in court March 9 for one of the earlier charges. Vermont State Police officials say the next step in the investigation will be to search BoeÕ s vehicle involved in the accident. The StateÕ s Attorney Office noted that Dearing could face a minimum sentence of one year or a maximum sentence of 17 years, if convicted. Dearing has been unable to post the $75,000 bail.

By Bruce Parker Vermont Watchdog Report MONTPELIER Ñ Gun rights advocates in Vermont were ready to let a Senate-approved bill restricting guns for the mentally ill slide. That is, until the Democratic vice chair of the House Judiciary Committee made a surprise gun grab on Tuesday. As S.141 moved through committee this week, gun-rights advocates and gun-control sympathizers appeared to have a truce over restricting some mentally ill Vermonters and violent felons from possessing firearms. On Tuesday, however, state Rep. Willem Jewett, D-Ripton, offered a surprise amendment to make it nearly impossible for some Vermonters to regain gun rights after being reported to the FBIÕ s National Instant Criminal Background Check System. By a 7-4 vote, the committee approved a harsh Ò clear and convincingÓ evidence standard for rehabilitated citizens who want CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

Sears Hometown Store to hold grand reopening By Lou Varricchio lou@addison-eagle.com MIDDLEBURY Ð This month, the Sears Hometown and Outlet Store in Addison County is getting a reboot with both a new owner and new nationwide branding effort SearsÕ calls, Ò AmericaÕ s Appliance ExpertsÓ . The Sears Hometown and Outlet Store, at 383 Exchange St., in MiddleburyÑ located across from the Agway farm and garden centerÑ will host a grand reopening Thursday through Saturday, April 23-25. According to new owner Tom Coulter, the storeÕ s Ò refreshÓ includes a new product assortment, redesigned merchandising, new fixtures, signage, and comprehensive employee training, among other changes. Leon LaRose is the storeÕ s new manager. “Our community will find that the often overwhelming experience of shopping for new appliances, is now more approachable and has been greatly improved through our new retail strategy,Ó Coulter said.
