Fairpoint, union agree to end strike
BURLINGTON Ñ FairPoint Communications, Inc., ystem Council T-9 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (AFLCIO) Locals 2320, 2326, and 2327; and the Communications Workers of America (AFL-CIO) Local 1400 announced last week that they have reached tentative agreements on the terms for new collective bargaining agreements. The company and the unions agree that the terms of their new collective bargaining agreements will address the objectives of the parties and that the new labor agreements will provide employees with wages and benefits that are among the best in northern New England. At the same time, the agreements permit the Company to achieve a more competitive position in the marketplace. Union members will vote on ratification of the tentative agreements as soon as possible. Effective with the signing of the tentative agreements, the parties agreed that striking employees would return to work Feb. 25.

The current administrator, Jeff Evans, is leaving June 30 for a new district position. Evans, who has worked at the school for more than two decades, has accepted a position as director of student learning for Chittenden South Supervisory Union District. Evans will remain at the helm of the Hinesburg school through June 30, the date his contract expires, He is expected to start his new job July 1. CSSU is advertising the position in a number of different venues, including Schoolspring, a national educational website that lists positions for which districts want to hire. MIDDLEBURy Ñ Middlebury physician Dr. Breena W. Holmes, current director of the Maternal and Child Health Division at the Vermont Department of Health, has been a leader inÑ and contributor toÑ the healthy lives and well being of VermontÕ s children. In addition to her career in medicine and education, Holmes has been appointed to another leadership role in the stateÕ s health care landscape; she has been appointed as a member of the board of directors of the Permanent Fund for VermontÕ s Children. The Middlebury-based Permanent Fund has been recognized for its selfless mission of providing leadership and funding for special projects that positively impact the lives of area children. Holmes now joins the Permanent FundÕ s other board members in crafting the organizationÕ s short- and long-term objectives. The non-profit Fund focuses on Vermont children
in three ways with its birth to three, community-to-preschool, and mentoring initiatives. While Holmes is well known within the pediatric community here, her additional credentials include teaching at the University of VermontÕ s College of Medicine as well as teaching health literacy and decision making at Middlebury Union High School. She serves as a physician for several Vermont schools, and is chairperson-elect of the Council on School Health for the American Academy of Pediatrics. Holmes is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School and Dartmouth College. She has also been active in a number of public health programs around the state which focus on children and their families.
