RUTLAND | The impact of Internet shopping continues to buffet so-called brick-andmortar retailers here in Vermont and beyond. Macy’s in Burlington and Kmart in Rutland and Plattsburgh are the latest victims. Last week, Burlington Mayor Miro Wein-
berger said that Macy’s Department Store, an anchor retailer on the Church Street mall since the early 2000s, is expected to close this March. Macy’s announced the closing last Thursday. Meanwhile, officials of Sears, the parent of Kmart, announced 100 stores will close including Rutland’s Diamond Run Mall outlet and the Plattsburgh store. The stores will
be closing March through April. Employees will receive severance pay and invited to apply for jobs at other locations out of state. Liquidation sales at Kmart begin Jan. 12. Regarding Macy’s, the world-famous New York department store chain, it is also closing 100 less profitable stores nationwide. The Burlington store is the only Macy’s in the state. » Closures Cont. on pg. 7

Young library patrons who couldn’t stay up until midnight to usher in the new year of 2018 had fun, instead, at the noontime event on Dec. 30 instead. Photo courtesy of Ilsley Public Library
RUTLAND | Spring is only two and half months away and Rutland Blooms is preparing for a glorious downtown Rutland. In addition to flowers and local art, this year’s efforts will see a new Center Street sculpture of Vermont 18th-century pioneer Ann Story dedicated. Rutland Blooms, a city beautification program which has planted thousands of flowers and flowering crabapples, maples and other trees in Rutland, presented the City of Rutland with a $25,000 grant last week in support of the Center Street Marketplace. » Sculpture Cont. on pg. 9
