Police stop illegal aliens in Orwell Vermont State Police troopers conducted a motor vehicle stop of Jose Tomas Flores Rocha after he was stopped traveling at 72 mph, in a 50 mph zone, on U.S. Route 22A in Orwell at 10:53 p.m. Oct. 22. Rocha was operating a vehicle with Mississippi registration plates that were expired. Investigation during the stop revealed that Rocha and his passenger, Paola Lopez-Sarmiento, were illegal immigrants. Rocha's Oregon drivers license was condemned by that state. The two subjects were turned over to U.S. Border Patrol officials.
Middlebury’s rebuilt McDonald’s Restaurant on U.S. Route 7 south reopened Oct. 28 with a visit by Gov. Jim Douglas, Ronald McDonald the clown, and Middlebury’s American Legion Color Guard—along with hundreds of new and old customers curious to see what the fanfare was all about. The old restaurant was demolished during the summer with a new, “greener” building rising in its footprint. The interior decor is evocative of mid-1960s Populuxe styling and includes comfortable benches, single stools, and soft lamp lighting. Several new items have been added to the menu and a large screen television monitor provides news and sports for customers lingering over a meal or a cup of Newman’s Own-brand organic coffee. Over 200 customers began lining up at the restaurant in darkness at 3 a.m. on opening day just to receive free Egg McMuffins and other prizes.
GRAND RE-OPENING: Middlebury McDonald's key players are Karen Dumas, area supervisor, Bobby Jo Jones, store manager, Eileen Coughlin, interior designer, and Charles Coughlin, owner-operator.
