margesharp@gmavt.net HINESBURG — Prior to the opening of the Hinesburg Selectboar d meeting on July 1 1, chairman Jonathan Trefrey asked for public comment and r esident Barbara L yman pr esented a copy of a petition regarding town lot 15 to the board which was signed by 269 Hinesburg citizens. The document addressed the use of lot 15, the last undeveloped par cel in a 15-lot commer cial subdivision known as Commerce Park which was subdivided and awarded town and state permits for commercial use 25 years ago. The petition r eads: “A petition to save our limited commercial land for new businesses, the petition read as follows: We, the undersigned citizens of the Town of Hinesbur g, petition the Hinesbur g Select Board t o r espect a nd s upport the long established zoning for Lot 15 at Commerce Park and to find the objectives of the r ecently adopted T own Map can likely be met on T own owned land elsewhere in the community . W e support the long stated T own Plan goal of attracting new business to Hinesbur g, for the jobs that ar e cr eated and for the added value made to our tax rolls.” A copy of the petition will be presented to the Hinesburg Development Review Board at its next regular meeting.

Giant 9/11 flag at Middlebury VFW By Lou Varricchio

newmarketpress@denpubs.com MIDDLEBURY — The National 9/1 1 Flag will be will make a special appearance at the VFW in Middlebury dur ing the annual V ermont State Firefighters Convention, Friday July 22. Destroyed in the aftermath of the W orld Trade Center Islamic terr orist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, and stitched back together seven years later by tornado survivors in Greensburg, Ks., the flag is a living testament to the r esilience and compassion of the American people. The flag is now touring all 50 states. Once the flag is r estored and made whole again by t his S eptember, i t w ill b ecome a part of the permanent collection of the National Sept. 11 Memorial Museum being built at the W orld Trade Center. The historic flag cer emony will take place at the VFW on Exchange Str eet in Middlebury July 22, at noon.

Keyes named new college V.P. MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College has named James R. Keyes vice president for college advancement. A 1971 Middlebury graduate, Keyes is a for mer boar d member of the Middlebury College Alumni Association and curr ent tr ustee of the college. He will be r esponsible for managing fundraising and alumni operations of all of Middlebury’s e ntities: t he u ndergraduate c ollege, the Language Schools, the Schools Abroad, the Bread Loaf pr ograms, and the M onterey Institute of International Studies. Michael D. Schoenfeld, who pr eviously held this position, has been named senior vice president and chief philanthr opic adviser . Schoenfeld, a member of the Middlebury class of 1973, will work closely with Middlebury College Pre sident Ron Liebowitz and many of the college’s most gener ous supporters on fundraising and special projects directly related to Middlebury’s

major strategic objectives. Keyes is the former president of Citizens Bank of Vermont and First V ermont Bank. He also served in se nior leadership r oles at B erkshire Bank and the First National Bank of Boston. Along w ith h is B achelor o f Arts f rom M iddlebury, he holds an M.B.A. fro m Northeastern University. “Jim brings leadership skills and extensive management experience to the job as well as a deep knowledge of Middlebury College and its people, programs and history,” said Liebowitz. Keyes will step down fr om the Middlebury board of trustees, on which he has served since 2000, to take on his new r esponsibilities. He is currently chair of the audit and nominating committees, and a member of the prudential, buildings and gr ounds, and educational af fairs committees.
