Middlebury to host state firefighter convention

Interns learn ‘the biz’ at MCTV

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Community T elevision welcomed summer interns to the V ermont PEG Access television station located on the thir d floor of Ilsley Public Library in downtown Middlebury. Each year , MCTV interns learn video production skills as they contribute to the r unning of the station, help cr eate and distribute pr ogramming by and for the local community, and craft individual projects with the support of MCTV staff. This year ’s interns ar e a diverse gr oup. Kaylee Mumford, a sophomor e from New Haven, returns to MCTV to hone her editing skills. She is also serving as assistant pr oducer for Ramona Guadalupe’s bilingual program “Las Pr omesas de Dios.” “I’ve thr oughly enjoyed pr evious work at MCTV and am excited about being an intern this summer,” she said. Two middle school interns, who have demonstrated a knowledge of video that belies their age, ar e sharing their knowledge with their peers as part of MCTV’s summer video camps. Jacob Klemmer will be entering the eighth grade at MUMS in September . He is the lead guitarist and vocalist for his band, The One Eyed Jacks, and he will be helping teach MCTV’s music video camp and assisting with the annual br oadcast of the Festival-on-theGreen. Jacob was the winner of Ilsley Library and MCTV’s 2010 Teen Video Challenge. See MCTV, page 8

HAPPY 50TH, ADDISON F.D. — It was a fun day for young people and adults at the recent 50th anniversary open house at the Addison Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters celebrated 50 years of service to the town and surrounding communities with a U.S. flag raising invocation, dance, chicken lunch, and a display of fire apparatus. MIDDLEBURY — Starting this Friday, hundreds of fir efighters fr om ar ound Vermont will be arriving on the campus of Middlebury College for the 122 annual Vermont State Firefighter Association Convention. This year’s event is hosted by theAddison County Firefighters Association in Middlebury. All VSFA State Convention meetings and public demonstrations will take place July 22-24 at the Middlebury College Sports Complex at 219 South St. Although the convention is a chance for all statewide professional and volunteer fire department personnel in V ermont to meet and exchange ideas, this year fir efighters are extending an invitation to Addison County r esidents to attend events in or der to better appr eciate the risky business of firefighter and emergency services. Town of Brandon kicks off 250th birthday events BRANDON — The Civil W ar ignited conflicts and str ong emotions throughout the United States, and even a small town in the Northeast was not immune to the changes sweeping the nation. Especially instr umental dur ing this time period was Stephen A. Douglas, a renowned son of Brandon and Abraham Lincoln’s strongest competitor in the 1860 presidential race. This year marks the 250th anniversary of the town’s charter and the sesquicentennial of Douglas’s death. The town kicked off the 201 1 celebrations

with the second annual Civil War Days last month. Members of the Champlain V alley Historic Reenactors camped out in Brandon’s Central Park and offered enlistment activities, r unning drills, and a traveling museum. They wore reproductions of uniforms worn by the 1st and 2nd Vermont as they marched off to war . The uniforms wer e gray and similar to that worn by the Allen Grays, Brandon’s town militia unit.
