SOUTH BURLINGTON — The South Burlington Police Department is working with the U.S. Secret Service, Vermont State Police, University of Vermont Police, and Burlington Police Department, to plan and prepare for the visit of President Barack Obama on Friday, March 30. The planning for the event has been extensive, with a focus on both the president's and the public's safety and security during the visit. The unified agencies involved in the planning are keenly aware of the public's concern over traffic congestion during visits of other dignitaries. Due to the level of security required for a visit by the President, there will be temporary road closures and redirections of traffic in and around the area of Williston Road (Route 2), Interstate 89 in the area of exit 14 E&W, and the Spear Street/ East Avenue intersection. The temporary actions may delay traffic and will radiate beyond the area to other roadways. While the highways will only be closed intermittently during this event, backups may occur. It is highly recommended that alternate routes be planned and extra time allowed for travel in the greater Burlington, perhaps affecting as far south as Hinesburg, March 30.

Library receives donation for picture books Salisbury library to kick-off reading event April 7
By Lou Varricchio
newmarketpress@denpubs.com SALISBURY — There’s no better way to inspire pre-K and Kindergarten-age minds to soar more than a big picture book. Showing and telling about everything from giant trucks and dinosaurs to spaceships and undersea creatures, picture books stimulate young eyes. Better still is a child sitting with a parent and reading a picture book together; it’s a sure fire recipe for success in future achievement in reading and classroom learning. Enter the Salisbury Free Public Library and head librarian, Jennifer Stefani. Stefani recently applied for a $2,000 grant, via the Winnie Belle Learned Fund of the Vermont Public Library Foundation, to purchase 150 new picture books over the next year. Stefani’s grant application also included a request for the funds to purchase a new bookshelf to display the books. Last week, Stefani received the good news from State Librarian Martha Reid that the Salisbury Library won the grant award for new the new books and the shelving. To celebrate the gift, the library will hold its first See LIBRARY, page 11

No. Ferrisburgh man arrested for antiques theft From Staff & News Reports newmarketpress@denpubs.com
Vermont State Police detectives searched Champlain Valley Antique Center in Shelburne for stolen antiques.
FERRISBURGH — During the past few months Troopers from the Williston and New Haven Barracks of the Vermont State Police as well as officers from Hinesburg and Williston Police Departments have been investigating numerous burglaries of antiquities in the area. In most cases the burglar targeted barns, second homes, and homes of recently deceased people often returning more than once. The suspect, identified by police as Charles Pickett, 35, of North Ferrisburg, targeted antique items including dressers, tables, chairs, smaller early Americana items, and in certain circumstances old family photographs. On March 20, members of the Vermont State Police met with Pickett at his residence and subsequently recovered a large quantity of antiques from his residence. Picket, who is currently on furlough for previous convictions of burglary, was arrested for burglary and lodged at the Marble Valley Correctional Facility for violating his furlough. Pickett is scheduled to appear in Chittenden Superior Court on June 26 to answer to the charge of Burglary and Violation of Furlough. On March 21, members of the Vermont State Police, with assistance from officers from Williston, Hinesburg, and Shelburne Police Departments, executed a search warrant at the Champlain Valley Antique Center in Shelburne.
